Membership Benefits

There are so many fantastic reasons to join The Referees' Association From help and support from local colleagues to physical benefits from our national partners

There are so many great reasons to be a member of The Referees' Association. With a wide variety of exclusive discounts, local and national events, welfare support, legal representation, insurance as well as training through our membership portal - there are plenty of reasons to be part of The Referees' Association.

Welfare: The Referees’ Association puts your welfare high on our list of priorities We believe that every referee should be able to go out and do what they love without fear of abuse We have a dedicated in-house welfare team ready to help you with any issues you may have both on and off the pitch

Representation: Being charged by The FA or being invited to an FA Hearing can be a daunting experience

The Referees’ Association can help you through the charge, and help appeal it if appropriate, as well as help represent you at your hearing.

Insurance: Spencer Hayes offer insurance for a wide of things, including physiotherapy, dental (following an assault), gadget cover, personal accident insurance and much much more!

Local Support As a member of The Referees' Association, you have access to over 180 branches for you to visit and learn from

By attending any of our branches, you will receive training and development via monthly or bimonthly meetings which often include guest speakers! You will also have the opportunity to network and meet fellow referees in your local area who you are likely to work with during your refereeing career.

The branch is the longest running in the County town of Shropshire, attracting a wide range of membership from the north to the south of the County. We boast the first Shropshire Referee to ever officiate in the Football League, the late Sam Rogers, who was also Chairman, President and member of the Shropshire Football Association. The branch can trace a history back to the second world war The branch aims to support all of our member’s needs, for the newly qualified referees we are always here to help and we have a lot of experienced referees within our membership. The monthly meetings take place every 1st Monday of each month. The branch encourages members to attend the monthly meetings.

MEETING INFORMATION

Meetings are on the first Monday of the month starting at 7.30pm until around 9.00pm at the Harlescott Social Club (Roselyn SY14LP). Parents are actively encouraged to attend.

All new members are added to the Shrewsbury RA WhatsApp, a media forum to communicate ideas, AND debate amongst Junior Referees.

A new initiative has been developed where the Branch will go out to Junior Clubs and their referees and provide further development training. This was hugely successful with the SAHA Club and a second visit is planned. Our aim is to roll this out too many more Junior Clubs. It alleviates the need for parents to travel, so that the event is more local to a particular club.

1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women are affected by colour blindness.

The Football Association has published guidance notes on the condition to raise awareness of its impact on football.

Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - are mandatory for acts of dissent across all of grassroots football.

HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?

Players will only go into the sin bin for dissent cautions

For use of words, gestures, questioning or undermining the referee’s decisions

EXAMPLES OF DISSENT: Shouting at the referee, questioning the referee’s ability, slamming the ball into the ground and sarcastically clapping a decision

DURATION OF A SIN BIN

For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin

10 8

For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin

If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of:

1st half: Continues into the 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Players can participate in the penalty shoot out

THE MATCH DAY PROCESS

Dissent

Dissent caution: Referee issues a Yellow Card and directs the player to the touchline

Whilst in the sin bin, if A player can only return to the field of play with the referee’s permission at a stoppage in play

If a player receives a second Yellow Card for any type of offence, they will be shown a Red Card and dismissed from the field of play the player commits a Yellow or Red Card offence they are sent off and can not be substituted

Sin bins only apply to a player’s first Yellow Card. If they receive a second Yellow Card they are dismissed from the field of play.

Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or actions is still a Red Card offence!

Reporting Safeguarding Concerns

Under 18 Referees

Have fun and keep safe

Shropshire County FA wants to ensure you are aware of the support you can access should you have any concerns over your safety and welfare while carrying out your refereeing duties. Please read the information below in full and keep it and the contact details safe in case you need them

It is important to remember that the vast majority of football is played in safe and friendly environments where everyone can enjoy taking part. However, we appreciate that there may be occasions when you would like additional help and support

Concerned about something you’ve seen or heard?

Tell an adult you trust if you are concerned about something you have seen or heard, if something doesn’t feel right, or if you are worried about comments someone has made to, or about, you via text or social media. It’s really important that if you are concerned about your own safety, or the safety of another child or young person, that you let the Shropshire County FA Designated Safeguarding Officer or the Shropshire County FA Participation Team know as soon as possible to ensure we can support you

Disciplinary Matters

It’s really important that all match day disciplinary matters are reported to the Shropshire FA as soon as possible. In most cases this is a simple and speedy process that can be completed online However, should you need assistance in compiling a report contact The Shropshire FA Football Participation Team or the Designated Safeguarding Officer

In the unlikely event of a very serious disciplinary matter, you may wish to speak to somebody about it. Our Football Participation Team or Designated Safeguarding Officer can be contacted for advice and support

Feel threatened?

In the unlikely event you feel threatened whilst refereeing; your own safety must be your priority Find a supportive adult and ensure you can leave the venue safely. Avoid doing or saying anything that might make things worse At the first opportunity please report these events to our Disciplinary and Designated Safeguarding Officer department. Our Football Participation Team will contact you when he/she has been informed about the incident

Attending a disciplinary hearing

During the course of your refereeing career you may need to attend a disciplinary hearing to give evidence Don’t worry about this as you will be offered guidance and support by a member of the Discipline team. If you are under 18 we take your age into account and ensure the environment is as supportive as possible Referees under 18 can be accompanied by a parent/ carer or colleague If they prefer, our Referee Development Officer or Designated Safeguarding Officer can be on hand to offer this assistance.

Inclusion

If you have a disability or impairment or believe there are restrictions in place preventing you from fully accessing and enjoying refereeing then please inform us Football is inclusive and that applies to refereeing too If you would like to chat about this please contact the Shropshire County FA Football Participation Team or Designated Safeguarding Officer and we can help to remove the barriers to your full participation
