CEOUPDATE

2025/26 SEASON FIRMLY UNDERWAY

As we move firmly into the 2025/26 season, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an encouraging and productive few months for football in Shropshire.

I am delighted to welcome Rachel Forbes as our newest Non-Executive Director. Rachel brings a wealth of legal expertise and a strong background in both sport and media. Her arrival strengthens our Board at a pivotal time, helping us to grow the game sustainably, inclusively and innovatively.

We were also proud to be shortlisted for the Special Recognition Award at this year’s County FA Recognition Awards. This nomination highlights the outstanding work of our Designated Safeguarding Officer, Sam Griffiths, and the dedication of our clubs and volunteers in making football safe and welcoming for all. Safeguarding remains at the heart of everything we do.

Building Partnerships

Partnerships have been central to our progress. In August, we launched a new collaboration with the Shrewsbury Town Foundation, focused on driving equality, diversity and inclusion across grassroots football. This work will open up opportunities for underrepresented groups and communities across the county.

We are also delighted that Furrows, the well-established Shropshire automotive business, has reaffirmed and expanded its support for The Shropshire Girl’s League. Together, we will create new opportunities for young female players and thrive in the game.

In September, we launched our first Business Partnership Brochure, which has already attracted significant interest. We are now in discussion with a number of local companies who share our vision for the future of grassroots football in Shropshire.

Our charity partnership with the British Heart Foundation has continued to build momentum. The launch of the ‘Red Boot’ campaign, a collaboration between with Sky Bet, the EFL and BHF, has been particularly inspiring - connecting the excitement of goals on the pitch with vital, life-saving research into heart disease.

Grassroots Energy

At grassroots level, it has been fantastic to see the season kick off across every corner of the county. The commitment of referees, volunteers, players and coaches continues to inspire us all and underlines the strength of our football community.

Looking Ahead

Our priorities for the months ahead include:

Supporting clubs and volunteers with resources and recognition.

Expanding opportunities for women, girls, disability and walking football.

Driving facility investment and development.

Embedding safeguarding and wellbeing into every aspect of the game.

Delivering High Quality County Cups.

I want to thank everyone who plays their part in helping football thrive in Shropshire. Together, we are building not only teams and leagues, but stronger, safer and more inclusive communities.

Enjoy the read, and I look forward to seeing many of you over the coming months.

Rachel has been struck by the passion and commitment of Shropshire’s football community. Volunteers, referees, coachesandclubofficialsallplayvitalroles, andshesees this grassroots energy as one of the county’s greatest strengths.

FAand Shrewsbury TownFC TeamUpTo Promote PlaySafe 2025 2025 PLAY SAFE

On Saturday 27th September, Shropshire FA proudly partnered with Shrewsbury Town Football Club to support Play Safe 2025, the FA’s annual safeguarding initiative dedicated to ensuring a safe and positive environment for every child and young person in football.

As part of this year’s campaign, children from grassroots clubs across Shropshire were invited to become flag bearers for the first-team home fixture against MK Dons, a truly special opportunity that created unforgettable memories for all involved.

For many of the children, this was their first time on the pitch at a professional football match, waving flags alongside the players in front of a packed crowd.

Before the main event, the Shrewsbury Town Foundation hosted a fantastic football festival, bringing together young players from across the county for a morning of fun, friendly competition and community spirit.

The festival not only celebrated youth football but also emphasised the importance of safeguarding in every corner of the game, from grassroots to professional level.

The day was a brilliant showcase of collaboration, with Shropshire FA and Shrewsbury Town FC working together to promote safe, inclusive and enjoyable football for all.

The commitment from everyone involved demonstrated how safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and how, by working together, we can create the right environment for every young player to thrive.

A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone at Shrewsbury Town Football Club for making this day possible, and for their continued support of the Play Safe campaign.

Driving CHANGE:

HOW FURROWS IS POWERINGTHE FUTURE OF GIRLS’ FOOTBALL IN SHROPSHIRE

On football pitches across Shropshire, a quiet revolution is taking place. Every week, more and more girls are lacing up their boots, pulling on their kits and stepping onto the field with the same passion and determination that has long defined the beautiful game.

It’s a surge that mirrors the national picture but carries its own local significance. For many of these players, opportunities to play in structured leagues and develop coaches are only possible because of the support and investment from organisations like Furrows.

MoreThanJustSponsorship

Furrows’ sponsorship of the Shropshire FA Girls’ League helps fund the essentials - fixtures and resources that keep grassroots football running week afterweek.

But the impact reaches further. Training and development opportunities are being created for female coaches and referees, helping to diversify the leadership of the sport. Outreach initiatives are also tackling one of grassroots football’s biggest challenges: keeping girls engaged during their teenage years, when participation often dropsaway.

“Sport has the power to build confidence, teamworkandopportunity,” says Antony Frost, Director & Dealer Principal at Furrows. “Seeing so many girls across Shropshire choosing to play footballisinspiring, butthere’smorewe can do. Our continued support means every girl who wants to be part of the gameshouldhavethechance.”

BuildingtheFuture

For Shropshire FA, partnerships like this are about more than immediate gains, they’re about laying the foundations for thefutureofthewomen’sgame.

FurrowsXGirlsFootball

At the heart of this movement is a partnership that’s helping it thrive. Furrows, the community-focused automotive business rooted in Shropshire for over a century, has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots girls’ football in collaboration with Shropshire FA.

A Game on the Rise

The numbers tell a powerful story. Over 2,500 women and girls are now registered with local grassroots clubs, representing about one in five footballers in the county.

And the interest is only growing. In the weeks following the Lionesses’ latest triumph, the FA’s Find Football portal saw a 62.5% jump in enquiries from girls eager to play.

SHROPSHIRE FA NEWSLETTER

“Girls’ football in Shropshire is thriving, and partnerships like the one we have with Furrows are vital to sustaining that momentum,” explains Andy Weston, CEO of Shropshire FA. “Their support not only helps us deliver more opportunities on the pitch but also ensures that young players, coaches and referees have the resources they need to grow and succeed. Together, we’re making sure football is truly a gameforall.”

YOUTH FOOTBALL IS CHANGING FROM THE 2026/27 SEASON

As The FA announced in February, from the 2026/27 season, changes will be introduced to Youth Football focused on maximising the experience of all young players.

Tailoring youth football to fit even better and mean even more for all young players in England.

The changes in 2012 to the way youth football is played has a profoundly positive impact on the technical development and personal enjoyment of young players from grassroots all the way through to the England teams.

Now it's time to seize the initiative. To take the lead in shaping an even greater experience for the next generation. To give youth players more opportunity, more variety, more responsibility and action to feed their potential, empower their character and grow a lifelong attachment for the game we all love.

futureoffootballinourcounty.

The beautiful game belongs to everyone, but too often, the voices that matter most - those of young people who live and breathe football - aren't heard in the boardrooms where decisions are made.

That's changing. Shropshire FA's Youth Council is your chance to be at the heart of football development, ensuring that what matters to you and your peers becomes a priority at county level.

WhatIstheYouthCouncil?

The Shropshire FA Youth Council is more than just a talking shop. It's a powerful platform where passionate young players, referees, coaches, fans and future leaders come together to drive real change. Whether you're concerned about grassroots facilities, want to see more opportunities for women and girls, or believe we can do better supporting young referees, this is where your voice will be heard.

The council works directly with Shropshire FA's leadership team, board members and the wider football community. Your ideas won't just sit in a folder somewhere - they'll influence policy, shape programmes and create lasting change across our county's football landscape.

We Need Leaders, Champions and Change-Makers

Right now, we're looking for exceptional young people to fill seven key positions that will define how football develops in Shropshire:

Chair: Are you a natural leader who can bring people together and drive meaningful change? The Chair sets the vision, leads meetings and acts as the primary voice of young people in Shropshire football. You'll work directly with senior staff and represent youth perspectives at the highest level.

Vice-Chair: Perfect for someone who loves supporting others while taking on leadership responsibilities. You'll work hand-in-hand with the Chair, coordinate projects and ensure every council member feels valued and heard.

RefereeChampion: Calling all current or aspiring referees! Help us tackle the referee shortage by promoting opportunities, supporting young officials and creating a positive environment for those brave enough to take the whistle.

WomenandGirlsChampion: Football is for everyone, but we know barriers still exist for female participation. Lead the charge in breaking down these barriers, celebrating role models and creating pathways for women and girls to thrive in every aspect of the game.

DisabilityChampion: Ensure football truly is accessible to all by championing opportunities for players with disabilities, raising awareness of challenges faced by those with additional needs and driving inclusion initiatives.

Football Development & Community Clubs

The FA Club Programme: Thriving Community Clubs Initiative

Across the country, football clubs are growing in size but becoming fewer in number.

As a result, many are evolving beyond the pitch and positioning themselves as central community hubs.

To support this ongoing transformation, The FA has launched the Club Programme, designed to help clubs operate more sustainably, expand their reach and build stronger community ties.

The initiative focuses on three core areas:

1. Strengthening Club Finances

Support for clubs to take greater ownership of facilities (e.g., 3G pitches, grass surfaces and clubhouses)

Guidance in developing commercial and sponsorship opportunities

Access to tools and training to enhance financial and business skills

2. Expanding Playing Opportunities

Improved services and benefits for England

Football Accredited clubs to encourage growth

Support for 1*, 2*, and 3* clubs to increase female and disability participation, and to develop coaches, referees and volunteers

Continued backing for smaller clubs across both rural and urban areas

Help in launching FA sessional programmes, including access to funding and training

3. Deepening Community Engagement

Assistance in showcasing and maximising social and economic impact

Mental health signposting support for club members and wider communities

Links to other community groups and services (e.g., NHS, police, refugee networks)

This initiative is designed to help clubs become Thriving Community Clubs - defined as 3-star accredited clubs with strong leadership, robust governance and a supported coaching and volunteer network.

This month, Football Development Officer Dylan Shinton, alongside Club Consultant Martin Harrison, held initial meetings with local clubs to begin this exciting journey.

If you're a 2 or 3-star club and want to get started on the programme, get in touch at dylan.shinton@shropshirefa.com to gain access to the Club Programme Platform.

Grassroots Football Partnerships

Why Purpose Is the New Game Changer

The world of sport sponsorship and brand activation is undergoingaseismicshift.

Brands are no longer content with simply slapping their logo on a stadium hoarding or a player’s kit and hoping for maximum impressions. Today’s landscape demands more - more meaning, more impact, more purpose. As fans become increasingly value-driven, brands must pivottowardscampaignsthatprioritisesocialimpact.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the grassroots sports space, where the emotional and cultural stakes areattheirhighest.

Football at its core has always been about more than just winning. On local pitches across the UK, grassroots football brings kids, parents, coaches and volunteers together in ways that go far beyond sport. It’s here, in muddy boots and on community sidelines, that the game shapescultureandbuildsfutures.

TheRiseoftheSociallyConsciousFan

Supporters today aren’t passive spectators. They’re engaged, connected and deeply invested in the issues that shape both their communities and the game they love.

Frominclusivityandmentalhealthtotacklingracismand climate action, fans expect the clubs and brands involved in grassroots football to stand for something real.Infact,researchshowsmorethan70%ofUKsports fans believe sponsorship should promote positive social change - a figure that rises even higher among Gen Z andMillennialfans.

For grassroots football, this isn’t just a trend; it’s a cultural shift. Families now expect action, not just advertising.

WhyPurposeWorks-ForFootballandforBrands

Cause-led parentships and sponsorship aren’t just good forthegame-butgoodforbusiness.

Here’swhy:

Authenticity builds trust - Communities know when brands are serious and when they’re faking it. Supportingrealissuesearnslong-termrespect.

Purposesparksengagement-Storiesrootedinvalues are the ones people talk about and share, both locallyandnationally.

Stand out in a crowded market - With so many brands chasing visibility, purpose-driven sponsorship cutsthroughthenoise.

Inspire from the inside out - Employees, volunteers and partners want to be part of something meaningful. Purpose energises teams as much as fans.

HowBrandsCanDeliverPurposeinGrassrootsFootball For those ready to step onto the grassroots pitch with realintent, afewprinciplesstandout:

Listen first: Ask players, teams, referees and families about the challenges they face. Build campaigns with them, notjustforthem.

Partner wisely: Work with governing bodies, leagues andcharitieswhoalreadyhavetrustontheground.

Think beyond matchday: Legacy projects - from workshops to online resources -leave an impact long afterthefinalwhistle

BeyondSponsorship:ASharedResponsibility

For brands, the lesson is clear: don’t just show up with a badge.Rollupyoursleeves, stepintothecommunityand make a lasting difference. Because when football sponsorshipmovesbeyondvisibilityandintorealimpact, everyone benefits - the players, the clubs, the fans and thesponsorsthemselves.

FinalWord

The future of grassroots football sponsorship isn’t about being the biggest logo on the pitch. It’s about being the brandthatshowsup, listensandmakeschangehappen. And in that future, purpose isn’t just an advantage. It’s thewholegame.
