CITY PROFILE 1. Profile: Nashik City Nashik is located in Maharashtra on the banks of river Godavari. It is historically, socially and culturally important city. Nashik is HQ of Nashik Administrative Division. Nashik is also known as “Wine Capital of India”.

1.1 Geography Nashik is located in upper part of Maharashtra, 18.33-20.53 north latitude and 73.16-75.16 east longitude. It forms golden triangle with Pune and Mumbai and connected well with both cities via road. Nashik district has an area of 15,530km² while Nashik Municipal Corporation has an area of 267.48km².

1.2 Demography 1.2.1

Population

Total population is 1.49M (Census 2011) and has decal growth rate of 37.96%. It attracts a floating population of 1Lakhs people daily. Nashik’s urban poor population is 2.1Lakhs which is 14% of total population. Sex ratio of Nashik is 0.899 female per male.

Nashik city has a population density of 5556/km² and divided into 61 wards.

1.2.2

Occupational Structure

Total working population in the city is 5,34,821 both including main and marginal workers, which is 35.99% of total population. Female working population about 1,08,670. Females forming only 20.23% of total working population.

It is observed from census 2001 and 2011 that the work force engaged in primary (4.87%) and secondary sector (2.74%) is gradually decreasing and in tertiary sector (92.39%) is considerably increased.

1.4 Social Infrastructure 1.4.1

Education

Literacy rate of Nashik is 90%. There are 352 primary schools with total number of 1,53,644 students and 154 high school with 1,17,381 students in corporation area. 76% burden of primary education is taken over by private schools.

There are colleges providing higher education in various fields like Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, Medicine, Management etc.

1.4.2

Health

There are 4 hospitals which are run by the Government, having total capacity of 750 beds. NMC is running 5 hospitals having total capacity of 480 beds, 6 maternity homes with 130 beds and 20 dispensaries.

There are 293 private or public trust hospitals with total 6507 beds, 59 maternity homes with 615 beds and 775 dispensaries. Most of the burden of providing health facilities is taken over by private sector.

1.4.3

Commerce

There are facilities such as wholesale/retail grain market, mutton market, vegetable market exist in developed area. Moreover there is no organised space for hawkers.

1.4.4

Recreation and Entertainment

There are in all 144 gardens and 32 playgrounds in the city having total area of 163.08 Ha. There are 5 multiplexes, one planetarium, 3 drama theatres and swimming pools in Nashik.

1.5 Transport Airways – There is no airport for civilians within Nashik Municipal limits. Nearby airport is Mumbai (international) 190 kms, and another is at Aurangabad at 218 kms from Nashik.

Railways – The Nashik Road railway station is located 10 kms from city, situated on MumbaiBhusawal section.

Roadways – Road pattern is almost radial. NH3, Mumbai-Agra Road and NH50 Pune-Nashik road meet in the central part of city. There is no by-passes to the above important road and also due to intermixing of local and transit traffic, the situation gets aggravated.

Total constructed road within NMC is 1610.4 kms.

1.6 Economy There are some major industrial activities on the outskirts of city, such as HAL at Ozar, NTPC at Eklahare etc. which directly or indirectly influence economy and working population. Industrial activity within city is also noteworthy. There are about 6990 small, 27 medium and 131 large scale industries registered with DIC. Nashik is famous for its Grapes, onions, roses and exotic flowers. Tourism has been a traditional function of city. Kumbh-mela is held every 12 years. Last year in 2015 more than 5M people visited.

Industrial Sector 2 Industrial Sector 2.1 Introduction In 1980,s Nashik chapter of MIDC was setup by Government for developing industrial zones in Nashik. For industrial development of Maharashtra, Government had formed an organization called “MIDC” (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) in August 1962.

First industrial estate NICE (Nashik Industrial Co-operative Estate) was formed in the cooperative sector in 1962. Industrial Estate is at Satpur village 7kms from core. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited established unit for MIG fighter production at Ozar, 20kms Nashik in 1964.

NICE was an effort to attract large private sector investment preferably with international collaboration. The industry that came to Nashik was mostly engineering, electrical and pharmaceutical. Thermal power plant at Eklahra greatly contributed to the power demand.

The success of Satpur MIDC creates demand for additional Industrial plots. In 1980 MIDC declared second industrial estate at Ambad, located on Mumbai-Nashik road, 10kms from core.

NICE has also developed special plots for Women’s co-operative and a workshop for women entrepreneurs.

Success of NICE and NIMA at Satpur and Ambad was repeated at Sinnar, 22kms from core. In 1988 MIDC industrial area was formed at Sinnar. Sinnar area is being developed as a Mega Industrial estate with state of art facilities.

2.2 Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) Delhi - Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) is India's most ambitious infrastructure programme aiming to develop new industrial cities as "Smart Cities" and converging next generation technologies across infrastructure sectors. Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) Project is a flagship programme of Government of India with the aim of creating futuristic Industrial Cities by leveraging the "High Speed - High Capacity" connectivity backbone provided by Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC).Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Ltd. (DMICDC), a special purpose company, was incorporated to establish, promote and facilitate development of DMIC project. It undertakes project development services for investment regions / industrial areas / economic regions / industrial nodes and townships, for various central government agencies and also assists state governments.

There are 8 investment region in which Nashik is a part of Global manufacturing hub. This DMIC corridor has infrastructure budget of more than $100 billion. Nashik lies on 18th node which is Igatpuri-Nashik-Sinnar Investment Region (INSIR). For this purpose more than 3500Ha land is acquired.

2.3 Industries Nashik is deemed to be ‘the third most industrialised city of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune’, mainly due to ectensive industrial development in recent times. Investors in Nashik are spurring up in leap and bounds.

2.3.1

Small Scale Industries

Weaving rough blankets, cloth, curing hides, making copper and brass vessels and rolling bidies are some of small scale industries. Besides these, small villagers are engaged in making earthenware pots, leather chappals and shoes, bricks and tiles etc.

2.3.2

Medium Scale Industries

Manufacturing of food products and beverages, wearing apparel, tanning and dying of leather, wood products, basic metals, radio, television and communication equipment etc.

2.3.3

Large Scale Industries

There are sugar factories, rice mills and oil mills etc. in various parts of Nashik.

2.3.4

Private Estates

World’s greatest manufacturers have set up plants in Nashik MIDC area such as Bosch India, Crompton Greaves Limited, ABB Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Kirloskar Oil, Ceat Tyres, Glaxo Pharma, Coca Cola etc.

2.3.5

Wine Industries

Nashik is now popular for the wine industries. Around 60% of wine production from India is done from Nashik. Vinchur Wine Park is a grape wine park administered by MIDC. Many renowned Indian and MNC’s established themselves in Nashik.

2.4 Existing Industrial Scenario There are 3 industrial area in Nashik city i.e. Satpur, Ambad and Sinnar and have 14.02% of total developed area and 6% of total area. The present industries in MIDC are mostky chemical, pharmaceuticals, engineering and food processing.

There are 8 co-operative estates in Nashik district. Turnover for MSME for 2011-12 was Rs.145276.66 lakhs and export from MSMC for 2011-12 was Rs.7867.71 lakhs.

2.4.1

2.4.2   

Growth Trend Setting up of Mega Industrial area in Sinnar, which is one of the biggest in Asia, will bring about miracle growth in industrialization in Nashik district.

Establishment of ‘Wine Park’ by MIDC in Vinchur, Niphad will boost the winery sector in future.

Nashik is well known for grapes and onions. Also it is rich in other horticulture and vegetable resources. Its proper and effective utilisation should be made through establishing processing units.

Fly ash coming from Thermal power station should be used for making bricks.

Efforts should be made to utilise agro-residuals like waste coming out from sugar mills, shell of groundnut, etc. for manufacturing bio-coal briquettes, handmade paper, particleboard etc.

2.5 Industrial Area 2.5.1

Satpur

In 1960 Satpur was a small village without even a post office, telephone or electricity.

Constructing buildings, roads and other infrastructure proved a Herculean task for pioneering entrepreneurs.

Satpur has an area of around 1600 acres.

Ambad

In 1980 MIDC declared second industrial estate at Ambad, a village located on Mumbai-Nashik road and 10 kms away from Nashik city/core.

Ambad has an area of around 1400 acres.

Sinnar

Sinnar is a small town 22km away from Nashik. This area is in the process of development.

Trans-national companies are invited to locate their production centres here. Sinnar was once famous for its Bidies (type of hand rolled tobacco stick). Nowadays it is planning for the future high tech industries.

Sinnar has an area of more than 6600 acres. (1500Ha is proposed).

2.8 Impact of Industries 2.8.1

Slums Definition of slum has its root mainly in deteriorating and sub-standard housing and overcrowding, poor sanitation, poverty are the characteristics of area covered in slum. The term slum has been long in use almost since 18th century when it was a term for squalid housing in densely populated districts of industrial cities.

The slum is a worldwide urban phenomena, and is cast into a wrong image with a heavily negative bias as ‘rash’ on city landscape, ‘a blot on civilisation’, over-crowding, filth, sub-

A positive attitude is to recognise slum as a ‘component’ of city evolution, an ‘element of urban complex’, as a ‘transitional settlement’ at that low level of survival, and to appreciate the contribution of slum dwellers to the city’s low wage labour force and its gross product.  Slums in Nashik City: - The growth of slums starts with setting up of industries in Nashik city.

2.8.2

Pollution

Pollution may be defined as the undesirable changes in the physical biological and chemical characteristics of air, water, noise and soil which can adversely affect on human health and its property, ecosystem and its routine life style.

Ambient air quality is an alarming issue in city with rise of traffic and industrial activity. On one hand there is the rate of industrialisation and on the other hand deforestation, lack of rainfall, high temperature and growing vehicular population make the adverse effect on the air, noise, water and soil.

3 Inferences •

Nashik is changing its identity into industrial identity from holistic city and city of temples.

•

Nashik has good number of winery due to better outcome of grapes in which location and climatic condition plays an important role.

•

Nashik is one of the important city in triangle of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.

•

While considering total number of industries in Nashik, it can be analysed that engineering industries are more in numbers.

•

Nashik has a good number of micro, small, medium and large scale of industries.

•

Industries not only contributing in economy growth but also contributing in employment opportunities, social change and standard of living of society.

•

There are some lack in proper utilisation of local resources such as horticulture and agricultural crops, lack in transportation according to demand, lack of trust and faith between cluster units and shortage of electricity.
