Durgapur is an industrial town in the state of West Bengal, India and located about 160 km from Kolkata. It was a dream child of the great visionary Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second chief minister of the state. The well laid out industrial township was designed by Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk. It is home to the largest industrial unit in the state, Durgapur Steel Plant, one of the integrated steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited.
Main Objectives were:
To develop a development plan that will encompass:

o Preparation of Base Map of the study area
o Current situation assessment in terms of regional setting, urban economy (industry and allied sectors), demography and socio-economic profile, landuse and transportation, physical and social infrastructure, housing, environment and unique issues of the region (pollution, etc.), urban administration and management
Inventory of committed infrastructure and other development projects
o Assessment of strength, weaknes
