what? I volunteered at Reefwatch a marine conservation NGO for three weeks and as a volunteer and i was assigned the task of building artificial reef structures. Other tasks included office restoration and sharing my skills with a bunch of local kids during ocean art.Sundays (sketching drawing).

why? The purpose of the project was to unlearn my methods and perceptions about designing for the industry. I was curious to know how different environment changes the way I work and challenges my skill-set.

About the client ReefWatch Marine Conservation is a non -profit Organization established in 1993, as a Public Charitable Trust under the Societies Registration Act. ReefWatch is involved in research, education and outreach activities. These have included coral reef monitoring in the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, documentary films, beach clean ups in Mumbai, SCUBA training for scientists and education programs in schools across the country.

Research A few dive sessions Diving was one of the best experiences I had during the project. It gave me a chance to study the environment that the corals survive in and the factors that would affect the structural design of the reef.

Modular Structures (W.I.P.) ARTIFICIAL REEF - first approach

The idea was to design one unit that could be produces to grow the structure as a whole. This reduces the cost of making the structures while helping them with the disposable income they have. With every dive they could grow the structure horizontally. Current structures are time and budget Intensive.

UNIT of the structure. HEXAPOD The matchsticks proved to be a good material for making scaled down mockups of the structure.

Hexa-pods with a mesh covering would be connected to the other pods to achieve horizontal expansion.

This idea did not pass the concept phase due to time limitations and lack of resources. The focus was shifted to building a single large structure with more number of grids.

From Binding Wire To The Reef Structure ARTIFICIAL REEF - second approach

The second approach was about building a single standing large structure. I devised an idea to make the new structures more efficient. The structure resembles a water droplet hitting the water surface. Keeping the diameter same as the old ones, I maximized the surface area by altering the shape of the structure.

Scaled-down model

Cross-section grid

Existing structures didn’t utilise space efficiently and hence low on cross-sections so I re-shaped them keeping in mind their drawbacks.

Mineral Accretion ARTIFICIAL REEF - process addition The purpose of this process is to artificially produce the natural limestone which corals need to grow on. It accelerates coral growth, healing, resistance to stress due to anthropological impacts and climate change. It helps the reef to restore wherever it can not recover naturally.

Cables to connect the panels and the structure

Mineral Accretion Process Poster

1 A buoy with solar panels sends electricity through cables to an artificial reef.

3

2 A safe low voltage, electric current is applied which flows through the metal structures. The electric field causes minerals in sea water to precipitate and adhere to metallic frames.

An electric field is created by positive and negative charges.

The structures form ideal foundation on which attached corals grow and flourish.

4

Divers tie coral fragments to the bars. Coral larvae settle onto the calcium carbonate, which helps skeleton grow.

6 The result is a composite of limestone and brucite (CaCO3)

5 Only previously broken corals are used.

Help Is Vital For humans and for corals Corals use most of their energy to create structures, and adding mineral accretion technology to the equation helps them do it faster. They grow faster and have more energy left over to fight bleaching, disease etc.

‘We are eternally grateful to Bob Sevenster of Coral Aid who is the creator of this magic here’.

SHWAAS A lung exercising and monitoring kit

What ? My intervention will aim at reducing Respiratory morbidity and mortality rate during childhood caused due to Acute Respiratory Infections (Asthma, Bronchitis).

I’m trying to prevent the contraction of these infections by means of strengthening one’s lung functioning through exercising and constant monitoring.

Involvement of teachers and kids of government schools.

For kids under the age of 6.

Imparting health through education

i was there !!!! TRUST ME! IMPROVING MY SITUATION HELPED MY PARENTS BREATHE BETTER . ARI’s include spectrum of severity within it as a result majority of the milder infections go severe in the absence of proper care.

Diagnosis

It’s impossible to stay away from viruses and bacteria but certain factors make you more susceptible to ARI’s. The immune system of children and older adults are more prone to being affected by virus.

I NEVER KNEW ABOUT LUNG EXERCISES Studies have shown respiratory muscle training after or before one has contracted an infection reduces the need for medication by up to 86%.

let’s see how the blow-pen works As a child I used to love using blow pens. It mimics a yoga exercise where you inhale deeply and exhale out with pursed lips. This builds pressure in the lungs and exercises them.

Byjus Educational Tablet (Product Consultancy)

What ? Designing a tablet for kids keeping its modularity in mind. BYJU’S gave me a week long project which included studying the market of learning tablets and conceptualizing one which fits correctly with their list of add-ons.

About the client BYJU’S - The Learning App is the popular brand name for Think and Learn Private Ltd., a Bangalore-based educational technology and online tutoring firm. It was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran at Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The brief stated that an idea for a kids tablet be produced keeping in mind the add-ons they wish to provide.

MARKET STUDY Software to hardware relation Most of the tablet are totally dependent on the software. Most of the tablet use is screen based and very few of them have separate attachments to play to achieve a different user experience.

durability They have a foam or silicon casing for durability and shaped well for good grip. These materials are capable of absorbing shock, can be shaped easily and a range of colours can be added to suit the user. A balanced combination of hard and soft materials like these could help achieve durability goals.

personalization Out of the list, Nabi tabs have tried some personalization techniques on the backside and its camera position can be shifted for different angles. Not many of them make use of stands but in our case a stand could prove beneficial to take well guided still images for scans.

FLEXION

Rear Steering Recumbent Bike

Why ? Well, the existing recumbent bikes are all front steering with long connected chains till the rear. To get rid if the chains, make it lighter and move away from the conventional design, I, under the guidance of Mr. Sudipto Dasgupta started this project.

https://www.performercycles.com/recumbent-bikes/high-racer-recumbent-oss-frp/

trial and error I was basing many ideas on my intuition. Since there are not many people who have tried making a rear steering recumbent bike I had to buildit from scratch. I salvaged parts from an old cycle to build the bike.

Raw Materials

advantages Flexion is a rear steering recumbent bicycle. Gives the user’s greater back support. It is tested that this position while driving, gives the rider better momentum and driving ability.

What’s new! Moving away from the conventional designs with long drive chains this bike hosts a front wheel drive planetary gear box (sans chain) with lower frame weight. All of this made possible with the rear steering mechanism on flexion.

MADRAS CROCODILE BANK TRUST

What ? To transform the whole M.C.B.T. facade with the help of sculptures and a few modifications to the existing space. 25 sand casts with attachment support and 21 metal sculptures were to be surfaced and fabricated in 20 days. Variety of materials and a team of 15 people were used to construct these sculptures. The whole stretch measured around 270 feet, situated on the East Coast Road.

About the client M.C.B.T. is a reptile zoo and herpetology research station. It was Asia’s first crocodile breeding centre located to the south of the city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was established in order to save three Indian crocodile species, the Mugger, Garial and the Salt water crocodile. It gives shelter to 5000 crocodiles and alligators representing 14 of the 23 existing species, all considered endangered, that are native to India. As of 2011, the Croc bank had a total of 2,438 animals, including 14 species of crocodiles, 10 species of turtles, 3 species of snakes, and 1 species of lizard.

everything starts with a sketch Before starting to build sculptures for M.C.B.T. we had to study their form correctly. Their body structure, their stance, their moves, so that we could fabricate them.

FABRICATION & surfacing This is the first stage where we had to fabricate the outer structure of the different species of crocodiles, snakes and lizards. Fabrication included several processes like cutting, bending, welding and a primer coat before starting the surfacing.

We used a number of materials for surfacing, cane, jute ropes, jute sacks, bamboo were a few of them. We had to weave most of their body surface and highlight their key features. The use of natural material really made the sculpture aesthetically pleasing and a perfect match for the surrounding.
