THAWING NO MAN’S LAND “Thawing”, in its core idea, is for us to try and make as little new as possible.

Ponticelli as a district is a periphery, filled with the presence of absences where the feeling of being out of scale is unavoidable. The goal of the project is to make this periphery not a copy of, but an alternative to the center of the city, that means that both are very different and match different lifestyles, yet both have the same goal of ameliorating life for its citizens. A strategy has been used to activate and prioritize the existing patterns of citizen’s behavior and the development and enforcement of the potential of the existing urban morphology.

Therefore, it consisted of a process of being very sensitive, soft and compromising, and moreover, very gradual and systematic no matter what the environment is.

This led to a conceptual idea of having our design area divided into three parts: the tunnel, the courtyard, and the linear park along with the third landscape as one, where the user would, respectively, experience and learn, interact and socialize, and discover and appreciate the third landscape. Therefore, the language being used in our design goes from rigidity to slowly being flexible through organic movements to completely being independent or plastic.

The site is tucked between two distinct ends, the historical center on the west, and the Ponticelli future green strip on the east, and what binds these two and the three layers of the landscape is a journey directed by an organic and wriggly playful line and a linear park, where the user will find himself in an act of self-discovery. The start of the journey from the historical center is through the tunnel, with an emphasis on education, learning and community sharing.

Thereafter, you reach to an upper ground where you find yourself either at the start of the linear park or at the courtyard. Both are places of socializing, filled with play and leisure doing areas, that bring about a sense of community and happiness.

Finally, you arrive at the end of this journey, welcomed by the third landscape, a beautifully carved piece of nature that has been left as a precious memory of the past.

RE-STORYING THE ‘HIDDEN’ The intangible qualities of spaces often go ignored or unrecorded, and yet unseen elements of the vineyard landscape, such as stories, techniques of production and cultivation, sound, smell and terroir often provide the most effective mechanism to remember and establish a sense of place as natural and cultural landscape.

Landscape becomes a medium upon which actions from a mythical or historical past may be inscribed, and from which they may be retrieved. Landscape is something which is constantly becoming, always transformed, deformed and reshaped by our ancestors through space, and by the relations that those people from past activate with other spaces – spaces of memory, of dreaming, of imagination. The Landscape was not simply already there , waiting to be discovered, but the act of journeying in and around it, mapping it, naming it, is what renders it meaningful. Landscape is, therefore, ‘not a physical object: it is an object of desire, a figure of speech.

PONTE LAMBRO-THE REGENERATION OF RIVER LAMBRO PONTE LAMBRO is a section of the spine of River Lambro that runs throughout the east side of the Metropolitan city of Milan,a border district that, for the past few decades, has been only a symbol of decay and degradation.

The urban sprawl of Milan and the ongoing trend of a continuous expansion of the built-up urban areas has been threatening the persistence of peri-urban agriculture.

The open areas along Lambro River is the only threshold between eastern Milanand the peri-urban areas, having more fragmented open areas on the easter side of it.

A disconnection of the river from the urban core by public transportation , a physical cut-off of transportation due to the highway, hazardous risks such as flooding, a decay of historical permanencies such as the farmhouses and the water-mills, peri-urban agriculture and food insecurity due to the loss of agricultural land are just some of the issues that affect the whole stretch of River Lambro, and in particular Ponte Lambro and its inhabitants.

THE GLITCH -DESIGNING CITIES OF THE WORLD The main issue in this project is integration: physical integration of the area in its environment, and social integration of the migrants who will establish here temporarily or permanently. “THE GLITCH” came as a response to Barcelona’s two-dimensional layout of both its built environment and its green infrastructure and to vehicle the integration of this nowadays somehow isolated piece of town and of very diverse groups of people who have in common that they are strangers at the place.

We came up with a strategy of creating a new hotspot that would make a connection between Sagrada Familia, the sea, the mountain and the designated site. Barcelona’s greenery is laid out in a horizontal manner, so we have decided to break this by taking it in a vertical way through the facades of our design and reaching up to the roof, creating roof gardens in hopes of connecting these abandoned and often neglected spaces of Barcelona’s architecture.

Dealing with the context of a project’s site is an essential part of architecture, be it by denying or incorporating pre-existing elements and the environment’s conditions in the design. However, understanding what lies around as an active agent of the decisions and space organizations goes beyond simply considering the good views, natural ventilation, solar orientation, etc; it is about seeing these conditions as co-authors.

We frequently see the idea of nature as co-author in the design process. This is given as the starting point for propositions that reconnect contemporary society and natural elements. These strategies often take advantage of these natural resources to create new places.

YEAR: 2019 | LOCATION: SPETSES, GREECE | PROJECT: BUILT PAVILION - CHAPEL | TYPE: ‘MEDS’ WORKSHOP (participant)

DARK BEACON This pavilion aims to raise awareness of sea level rise. It is located on the top of a small hill overlooking the old harbor and shares this location with a light-house. While the light house warns of immediate dangers, the pavilion warns of future dangers. This is where the pavilion’s short-name comes from. The design is influenced by the maritime culture of Spetses. The external form of the pavilion resembles a simplified straight-edged outline of a boat, vertically extruded. Internally, there are 2 pools of water – one on the ground floor and another on the first – connected by a ladder. The distance between these pools is almost the maximum estimated sea-level rise by the year 2100. To achieve clear head-height this distance was increased slightly. Charred wood is used for 2 reasons. Charring is a technique used in traditional boat building, and there is a connection between the burned appearance and the theme of global warming. Visitors approach the pavilion via a long tree-lined avenue. The trees obscure the view of the pavilion so that it is not completely revealed until very close. Gradually the pavilion’s unusual vessel-like form becomes apparent. The triangular doorway is a reference to the effect of moving around boats in a confined shipyard. Upon entering, visitors step onto a ramp with an incline designed to cause a brief moment of balance adjustment, just like the effect of stepping from land onto a boat. This ramp is created by bending whole boards into shape. There is no break between the ramp and the flat landing. Proceeding up this ramp, one discovers a pool of water containing large stepping stones. This pool acts as a baseline for the sea-level rise concept. A ladder invites people to the first floor, where they are offered a seat with a stunning view of the Greek mainland and islands. The viewport contains a pool at it’s base. Visitors sit there wondering what might happen to the landscape outside should significant sea-level rise occur. The combination of charred wood and water, and the use of the triangular geometry are references to the traditional charring technique. This is an attempt to define a tectonic derived from the traditional processes and is a secondary theme of the project.

SLIDING CHAPEL The Chapel’s function is to act as a non-denominational space for reflection.

Upon entering the pavilion, visitors are offered a place to sit, where they are rewarded with a stunning sea-view. All of the wood used in the chapel is up-cycled.

Most of it was in the form of shipping boxes that we dismantled. The burning technique used was the traditional Japanese shou-sugi-ban technique of tying 3 boards into a chimney and setting a fire at the base. This technique of charring the wood is to give it low maintenance, protect the wood along with giving it a beautiful carbonized aesthetic. Inside the simple chapel, a recessed seat allows visitors to sit, reflect and take in views of the Mediterranean through a lowered window.

As the pavilion directly faces the sea, a constant breeze keeps the interior cool.
