hen I was 15-years-old and starting The Showtimes with my family, I could only imagine what our company would look like going to print with our 68th issue. Today, as we are putting the final touches of just that issue, I can see that The Showtimes has evolved into so much more than just a magazine.

Marketing is everything. You can have the best cattle in the world, but if no one knows about them, they are worth only market price. Over the past 12+ years, we have dedicated our life to being able to provide the industry with the #1 marketing source both in print and Online.

From distributing our magazines to shows and events across the country and giving “The Showtimes Effect” through our graphic design and photography to laying out sale catalogs and conducting exclusive interviews and feature articles we have always pushed the limits of what was before not thought possible for the promotion of this industry.

Competitive Edge Genetics was established in 2014 with the main location operated by Raymond Gonnet based in Lawrence, Kansas and now an additional location in Kathleen, Georgia operated by our newest ownership member the Spence family. We are a full scale show cattle operation selling 50-60 spring born prospect calves each fall, 20-30 fall born prospects in the spring as well as owning and promoting several AI sires along with offering a semen sales service on numerous other industry leading sires. It was started from scratch and we have spent the last 6 years building up inventory, clientele along with a list of accomplishments we are extremely thankful for and look forward to many more exciting years of growth to come.

The semen sales side of our business consists of providing an extensive customer service program traveling around the entire Midwest in the spring meeting with breeders offering mating expertise and options to

maximize their calf crop. We own approximately 10-12 both maternal and club calf oriented sires and also carry around 20 other industry leading sires giving our customers a well rounded selection of genetics to infuse into their breeding programs.

What sets us apart is we have always been looking for something unique that others donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t offer. Sourcing new genetics that are high in quality and also somewhat outcross has become a challenge these days but we strive to make them available for everyone to access. We also strive

to give honest advice when offering breeding recommendations to ensure that customers get the best chance at generating a profitable outcome.

With the live cattle sales division of our business there are two things we always focus on achieving for our customers. Customer service has always been very important to us and we understand that creating an environment where families enjoy the experience allows for the opportunity to help grow the kids showing livestock into responsible and

accountable young adults who will go on to reach their goals. Secondly we aim to offer both steers and heifers we can stand behind in terms of quality, structural integrity and performance.

In an industry flooded with numerous cattle selling year round what sets us apart is our work ethic in ensuring each and every calf we sell fits itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specific situations and we advise and help those customers any way we can.

We have also won Limousin Junior National Champion Female twice, 4th and 5th Overall Female at Chi Junior Nationals, Champion Simmental Female at the American Royal, Champion Limousin Female at NWSS twice plus a long list of jackpot shows over the course of each show season.

Our goal going forward is to continue to offer a strong customer service based program that enables our customers to feel like they have someone working as hard for them as they are themselves. We will continue to search for both genetics and live cattle that continue to offer quality and integrity we can offer our clientele in order for them to be successful.

LIFE’S A JOURNEY AND hat’s up, I’m Sam Burmeister.

How about that ride in?

I guess that’s why they call it Sin City. You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner.

I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack.

Or just: What’s up, I’m Sam Burmeister.

But I thought the hangover quote was hilarious, so you should totally use that lol.

My journey began outside the Southeast Iowa town of Muscatine, where my dad Jerry,

introduced me to the world of show cattle.

We purchased my first steer from the Danner family, through Ralph and his two sons Ben and Cole who I recognize among others as lifelong mentors. I gave it my best shot to show competitively throughout the state of Iowa and quickly discovered the value of hard work and detail. Fitting and dressing cattle quickly became my greatest passion.

I’ll be honest, I’m not from a big wealthy ranch family. I wasn’t really born with a silver spoon and I’m okay with that. At one point my dad was running a couple hundred head of commercial cattle, but

my favorite thing about him is the fact that he started from little to nothing to build his own way into the industry.

That, and the basic cattle knowledge he’s given me is something I value and use everyday.

As I hit high school, I was lucky enough to be involved with an incredibly competitive FFA chapter and judging team with even better advisors. Placing at several national contests and taking home a national champion Ag sales title with the help of awesome teammates.

Ashley Wiebe and the late great Dave Fowler, taught me the power of communication, sharpened my eye for livestock, always made sure I kept things simple, and continued to fuel the flame and passion I had for livestock.

After judging in central Illinois at the junior college level, I decided to bolt into the industry headfirst. Initially working on cattle in Michigan and eventually moving to Oklahoma and 3 other states in total along the way. The past year has been insane.

Helping dress back-toback OYE winning steers and working on a pair of Angus heifers who go 1 & 2 in Denver makes me

feel so blessed, humbled, and very lucky. I’ve been blessed to work with some pretty legendary mentors in my life, and not to mention lucky enough to work on some incredible cattle. Collins, Nowatzke, Las Rojas, M Lazy Heart, Express Ranches, Silveira Bros, Charlie Wilson, Jon & Kayla Sweeney, Jeff Boddicker, and John Murphy to name the bulk.

The Collins family in particular has been incredible to me.

Whether I’m helping dress OYE steers with a wizard like Colby, or learning the ins and outs of marketing from a pro like Christy, I don’t take it for granted.

Traveling across the country working on cattle is my passion, but I try not to live a very nailed-down life at this particular moment, which has let me do countless other ventures.

I think having an independent mind is much needed these days, especially in this industry. Art has always been a big passion in my life and I’m always sketching new things.

Not to mention creating designs, and eventually starting my own apparel brand, rodeo, ringing auctions, leather work,

photo/videography, music, and above all, helping youth. Why not do it all? Why not do what you love and try to be the best you can be at it? I’m just trying to live life while I’ve got it, instead of following the crowd. Thank God everyday, work hard, stay humble, and try to do some cool stuff along the way, you feel me?

I want to thank the awesome Reid family for being the most positive people in the industry and giving me the opportunity to share my story.

DIRECTIONS

RECIPE

Mix marinade ingredients together and pour over the cubed chicken.

Stir to evenly coat the chicken.

Cover and place in the fridge to marinade for at least 20 minutes and up to one hour.

Mix all sauce ingredients in a small sauce pan and cook over medium heat. Bring to a simmer until the sauce thickens. Turn to low and keep warm while you cook the chicken.

• 5 Whole Boneless Chicken Brest (cubed into 1” pieces) • 2 Tablespoons Toasted Sesame Seeds • Oil for Frying Marinade • 2 Tablespoons of Soy Sauce • ¼ Teaspoon Sesame Oil • 2 Tablespoons Flour • 2 Tablespoons Cornstarch • 2 Tablespoons Water • ¼ Teaspoon Baking Powder • ¼ Teaspoon Baking Soda • 1 Teaspoon Vegetable Oil

Sauce • ½ Cup Water • 1 Cup Chicken Broth • 1/8 Cup White Vinegar • ¼ Cup Cornstarch • ¾ Cup Sugar • 4 Tablespoons Soy Sauce • 2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil • 1 Teaspoon of Garlic Chili Paste (I use one Tablespoon to make it spicier) • 1 Clove Garlic (Minced)

In an electric/stove top wok or deep pot, heat ½ to 1 cup of oil up to shallow fry. Once hot, add chicken slowly as to not splatter the oil. Fry until golden brown, crispy, and cooked through. Remove chicken and place on a paper towel lined plate to remove excess grease.

Transfer to a mixing bowl and add as much or little of the sauce as you would like to coat the chicken (this recipe makes a lot of the sauce and I never use all of it). Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve over sticky or fried rice.

Bonus Recipe Sticky Rice

• 2 cups long white rice • 2 ½ cups water Wash the rice 1-2 times (this step is to remove extra starch content).

Then place the rice in your pot and add water. Cover the lid and soak the rice for 20 minutes.

Heat over high to bring to a boil.

Reduce to medium to avoid overspill. Cook for around 12 to 15 minutes until the water is almost gone. Then turn off the fire completely do not open the lid and let sit 5-10 min.

Then break up the grains gently and salt to taste. •

In 2004, the committees brought together a group of cattle families that evolved into a cast of characters that would shape the industry, create an environment for youth to flourish and even lend a hand to Brett and Sheryl who had kids showing livestock. The American Royal was the place where Brett & Sheryl met Neil Orth, Stanley E. Stout and Mike & Kay Hartman; individuals who were and now dear friends to the Clanton family and the reason for their involvement with the historic events.

In one short year, Brett and Sheryl quickly found their place as cochairmen of the auction committee

and held the position for six years.

Sheryl is quick to say, “When you’re surrounded by your friends that all have the same passion for helping youth determined to excel within the livestock industry, volunteering isn’t work. From planning and executing the first exhibitor social in the back of a pick-up truck in the middle of the cattle barn serving all of the exhibitors, the American Royal has always had a special place for the us.”

Coming together as a cattle family is what the Clanton’s love most about this business and was half of the success of the American Royal. As chairman, Brett and Sheryl helped to evolve the livestock auction while Bailey and Cole simultaneously became more competitive in show rings

he Kansas City Stockyards is a cherished landmark to many livestock families across the United States. As one of the central locations for marketing cattle in the 1940s, any number of cattlemen could be found in the stockyards. The American Royal has always carried on the tradition of bringing cattlemen together in the heart of the stockyards and in the early 2000’s became an annual event the Clanton family: Brett, Sheryl, Bailey and Cole, Bucyrus, Kan., not only attended, but also took under their wing.

throughout the country. Every fall the Clanton’s returned to the show ring they called home, in the heart of the stockyards. The American Royal is a short, 30-miles north of their operation, which made their home a hotel during those brisk, fall October days. Even if you weren’t staying at the house, you made sure to stop by on Sunday morning for a Bloody Mary with a kick and amidst the piles of boots at the door, the kitchen would be filled with energetic voices discussing the cattle and tired bodies sitting on the chairs.

Some of the fondest memories as a family involve the people that came together in 2004 for the auction and livestock committees.

Reflecting through the years spent at the American Royal, Brett and

Sheryl can still feel the excitement of being a part of the first grand champion steer bringing $125,000.

Their son, Cole was selected champion out of the heavyweight division in 2006 with a steer name “Stanley.” The steer was named in memory of the family’s dear friend and American Royal icon, Stanley Stout, who they had developed a sincere friendship with since meeting at the American Royal just a few years prior.

There was a lot of enthusiasm that was created during Brett and Sheryl’s time at the American Royal while they led volunteer efforts and fundraising for the premium livestock auction.

They laid the foundation for record-setting sales and a vibrant atmosphere for hundreds of youth

to exhibit, market their animals and learn the sportsmanship of the livestock industry. The American Royal livestock auction heightened the competition in the show ring.

The Clanton family takes pride in being part of building the livestock auction and contributing to a show revered as “where the best are shown”. As new families walk through the barns, they will see the determination and grit in the showmen and the quality of cattle running deep through each class.

Their hope is for new exhibitors and their families to benefit from the experiences and opportunities the American Royal has to offer.

To this day, the Clanton family is now involved in the different aspects of the agriculture industry.

Bailey and Cole carry on the

servant tradition as they help the younger generations get a start in this industry. Bailey has been working for the American Hereford Association since graduation from Kansas State University in 2012. As the National Shows Coordinator and Youth Activities Assistant, she’s working with seedstock producers from across the country to facilitate national shows for the adult and junior associations. Bailey has found her way to working with the youth of the National Junior Hereford Association just as her parents did when she was young. Cole is the current Yard Operations Manager at Pine Landscape Center in Lawrence, Kan., he and his wife Allyson currently run 100 head of

Simmental cows, selling around 30 head per year and exhibiting across the country.

The future of the American Royal is being met with excitement from the Clanton’s. The honored traditions of the stockyards in the historic West Bottoms of Kansas City will carry on with the new facility and offer new opportunities to support youth, promote agriculture and educate future generations about the livestock business. Walking into the new facility will be a different experience for the Clanton family.

Shavings will be laid on freshly poured concrete, livestock will be tied up to new gates for the first time, new champions will be slapped in the show ring and new

families will join the American Royal. However, throughout the new facility, a very similar cast of characters will come together to make a difference in the lives of young people. And from this familiar cast, the next generation will be taking the reigns. At the new American Royal, Cole and Allyson will be in the make ready area getting ready to exhibit their Simmental genetics, Bailey will be in the Hereford ring ensuring the Hereford show and sale run smoothly and as much as they may try to take a step back, Brett and Sheryl will continue to find themselves at the front line, supporting efforts with the American Royal livestock show and auction. •

What made you want to be a judge?

What has been your favorite judging experience?

What does your ideal market steer look like?

It was just something I’ve always been attracted to. I traveled around the state of Texas with my dad watching him sort county shows for years. I always looked up to him and those folks sorting the big shows and the way they operated. Once I judged on a judging team in college I was hooked. Been blessed to sort ever since.

When you are not on the road judging, what do you do?

I have spent the last 15 years or so in a 15 passenger van either assisting or coaching judging teams, so it’s been a big part of my life. My wife and I (mostly her) run a small but growing cow herd that occupies our time.

We have also loved becoming show parents. Seeing the next generation take to the things we love has been very rewarding. Our kids also play a few sports year round.

I’m not sure I have just one. The best shows have been the ones where I could bring my family to watch. I just enjoy working with the kids and sorting quality livestock.

What is the best steer you have ever judged?

You keep firing the hard ones. I’ve been blessed to judge a few special ones. There are two prospects that stick in my mind. One was one that I think Tyler Faber exhibited in 2007/2008. I think that steer would still be in the hunt today and went on to win the Iowa State Fair. The other one is the clone donor of Solid Gold when I judged him at the Texas A&M Saddle and Sirloin Show.

I’d never seen anything like him. I believe he was also 2007. The best fat steer I’ve sorted so far would be the Silver Denver Champ of the Skiles family. That was a great show and he still stuck out!

I think I’m easy to please. He MUST be a fat steer first. Muscle and fat cover still matter in my opinion. It helps if they are built athletic and have quality presence. No one wants a back drop photo with a plain looking one. But great ones are built from the ground up and shoulder back first.

What are you looking forward to the most at the American Royal?

The Royal has always been special to me as a judging contestant, coach and it was the first major that ever hired me to sort. I’m a steer kid at heart. So that historic venue plus good market steers trotting on the shavings gets my blood going.

What are your goals for the future?

Keep growing our livestock program and doing what I love with the lady I love. Keep raising kids that know what work is, and most of all keep loving Jesus and putting him first in all we do.

estled amongst farms and prairies of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heartland, the University of Illinois is a world leader in research, teaching and public engagement.

Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois (U of I) is one of the original land-grant institutions. The U of I resides between the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana where students are greeted by world-class faculty who focus on both practical questions and scientific study.

The College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) attracts quality students and sends out graduates who are in demand for the fast evolving agricultural industry. The college, with more than 2800 undergraduate and more than 600 graduate students, provides a diverse and challenging curriculum with 11 majors, 13 minors, and 38 concentrations. The College of ACES is known around the world, and the U of I is among the top institutions noted for the impact of research in food and agricultural sciences. Seven academic departments make up the college: agricultural and biological engineering, agricultural and consumer economics, animal sciences, crop sciences, food science and human nutrition, human and community development, and natural resources and environmental sciences. In 2016, the Department of Animal Science was recognized as the number one Animal Science Department for their graduate programs. The department produces more peer-reviewed research journal articles, generates more research dollars and has more faculty recognized for excellence with awards than any other department at U of I. The livestock judging program has been a mainstay within the department of Animal Sciences for over a century. The University of Illinois Livestock Team won

the first National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest held in 1900. Since then, the program has garnered many awards and accolades over the years and many of the industry’s top leaders have been involved in coaching Illinois teams.

In 1975, Dr. Doug Parrett followed Dr. Waco Albert, and began coaching teams for the next 13 years to come. Parrett was a member of the National Champion Judging Team at Illinois in 1972 and he was the first to recognize graduate students have an important impact on coaching teams.

Some of the students that were mentored by him include Lee Denzer, Dale Hummel, Stan Tarr, Steve Myers, Dan Hamilton , Craig Beckmier and Dan Shike. Shike coached teams while a graduate student and joined the faculty in 2007 and took leadership over the Illinois Judging and Evaluation programs. He also recruited graduate students heavily to join the coaching staff for teams. Some of the past coaches are Shane Bedwell, Brandon Yantis, Chris Cassady, Parker Henley and Jack Oattes. Beginning in 2020, Lee Rincker will be responsible for coaching the Illinois Livestock Team and also lead Extension programs in livestock judging and evaluation.

The creation of this new position affirms the Department’s commitment to livestock judging and student development.

One of the most defining and valuable feature of the livestock judging program at Illinois is the Meat Animal Evaluation Team. This contest serves as a capstone experience as it blends the evaluation of breeding animals, market animals, and the end product. The National Meat Animal Contest is designed to help students gain mastery in the field of livestock evaluation.

Dr. Bob Kaufmann and Dr. Waco Albert (Illinois professors) were pioneers in forming the contest we know today. Illinois teams have won over half of the contests held since 1964.

Judging team members travel more than 20,000 miles evaluating livestock at over 100 of the nation’s most successful operations which prepare them for 15 contests annually. Students learn to balance academic life with practice; they develop essential life skills of decision making and problem-solving and foster relationships needed for career success. Alumni of the program often cite their experience on the intercollegiate livestock judging team as the best decision they ever made.

y name is Dalton Shanks and I am a freshman at Baxter High School. My parents are Travis and Kassy Shanks and my sister is Klaire. I recently exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Steer at the Iowa State Fair. Showing cattle is my passion and this win was a special one! I began showing cattle in the bucket/bottle calf show at the Jasper County Fair when I was four years old. From there, I exhibited a steer at the National Western in 2015 along with shorthorn heifers. When I reached the age that I could show in 4-H, I started with market heifers.

In 2016, I won the market heifer show at the Great Iowa State Fair with my heifer, Doris. Following that show I decided to focus on steers.

Since then I have shown steers in Denver and heifers in Louisville. The Iowa State Fair steer show will always be my favorite show! I love how competitive it is. I also like being able to spend time with my friends, all while showcasing the great state of Iowa and our strong agricultural background. My sister, Klaire is now old enough to show, too. Our family enjoys showing on the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds jackpot circuit during the winter and spring.

My love for showing cattle comes from my family background. Both of my grandfathers grew up showing cattle in 4-H and they passed it down to my parents. My parents met through show cattle and have passed their passion on to my sister and I. I hope to continue the tradition and someday pass it on to the next generation.

Although I love the showing aspect of the industry, I also enjoy learning new feeding and fitting techniques. I have been blessed to have Wade Rodgers and his family/crew as mentors. I owe all of my successes in this industry to them and I could never thank them enough! In the future, I plan to attend college, probably Iowa State University, and become a member of the livestock judging team.

Beyond that, I hope to work in the agronomy field while being able to judge livestock.

Being named the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the Iowa State Fair was important to me because I was rewarded for all of my hard work throughout the year. My steer’s name was Joe Dirt and he came out of the Division II crossbreds. He weighed 1364 lbs. and was out of I Believe. He was raised and sold by Wade Rodgers. It will be tough to find a steer as special as ‘Joe’ was. He won many shows throughout the year and was fun to work on...even though he had an ornery side with a mind of his own. As I begin to think about next year, my plan is to select a new steer with the Iowa State Fair steer show as my end goal. •

i, I’m Abi Henderson. I’m 18 years old and I am from Ogden, IA. I just recently graduated with honors from Ogden High School. While in high school I was active in 4-H, FFA, band, choir, and volleyball. This fall I will be a freshman at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA where I will be studying Agricultural Business with the intent to transfer to a four year university after two years at Kirkwood.

Even though my 4-H career is over I still plan to remain active in the show cattle industry for years to come. This industry has shaped me into the person I am today and I am so thankful for that. I want to thank my aunt and uncle Michelle and Matt Lautner for helping me get this far, my mom for pushing me to be the best I can be, and everybody else that has ever helped me out with achieving my goals. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for the show cattle industry. •

My love for the show cattle industry started when I got my first heifer when I was in 4th grade. Ever since then I have been enjoying my life within the show cattle industry, and I am thankful for every person I have met and every lesson I have learned from being involved in this industry.

Throughout my entire show career we have traveled a lot of miles and have been to a lot of different places, but my all time favorite show to exhibit at is right here at home, the Iowa State Fair 4-H Show. I have been showing at the Iowa State Fair since I became eligible in 6th grade. When I was in 6th grade I set a goal to win something big at the Iowa State Fair 4-H show before I graduated high school.

For the past few years I had many division champions and reserve division champions at state fair, but never got into the top five or won anything big. Every time I didn’t get the outcome I wanted it encouraged me to work even harder and come back even better for the next year. Last year I

was lucky enough to finally accomplish my goal when I showed the Grand Champion 4-H Market Heifer and the 5th Overall 4-H Market Steer. I never thought I would be able to win the market heifer show and get a steer in the top five all in the same year. That day is one I will never forget! This year at the Iowa State Fair I showed the Grand Champion 4-H Market Heifer for the second year in a row.

It is an incredible feeling to be able to call myself a backto-back champion, and I am happy that I got to accomplish a goal I set back in 6th grade two times in a row! It's so great to be able to win something one time at state fair, but I can’t even put into words how it feels to be able to win something twice at one of the most competitive and prestigious state fairs in the country. It was a bittersweet feeling walking out of the historical livestock pavilion for the last time as a 4-H’er.

reetings! My name is Shae Stone. I am 14 years old, and a sixth generation Coloradoan.

I have deep family roots in the state, with both sides of my family having a history of ranching and farming. My parents, Nolan and Jodi Stone, own and operate S= Cattle Company, a cattle brokerage firm. In addition, my family runs commercial cattle and yearlings.

I started showing cattle at the age of eight, having followed in the footsteps of my mom, and grandpa, Jim Gies, showing in Weld County, Colorado. While Weld County is known for its deep agricultural lineage, and a having one of the most competitive county fairs in the country – it truly has cultivated some of the finest people in the beef industry. With that said, I have been blessed to be surrounded by great leaders, educators and breeders.

Along with showing cattle, I am an active member of the Weld County 4-H Livestock judging team. Recently, I received the honor of making the 2019 Colorado Jr. AllState judging team, recognizing the top 10 junior judgers in the state.

From the beginning, it has always been a goal of mine to win the market beef show at the Colorado State Fair.

While it came easy to dream big, it was a long journey to achieve this goal, with a steep learning-curve, and finding a talented, supportive team of people who helped my dream become a reality.

I purchased my steer, Doc, from Wade Rodgers and Dalton Lind. Both Wade and Dalton believed in my goal, knew I had the steer to do it, and did everything in their power to help me. Sired by Here I Am, Doc, got better and better with each day leading up to the Colorado State Fair. Truly an amazing beast, I was honored to have the opportunity to care, feed, and show him. Thank you, Mitch Daake, for raising a great one.

I am beyond grateful for the support system that I have.

Both showing and livestock judging have opened many doors for me, and has introduced me to the best people.

I have learned so many life lessons. Forever the words of 2019 Colorado State fair judge, Shane Meier, will resonate with me, “Get Up, Dress Up, Show Up – Never Give Up!” I’m sure glad I never gave up on my dream of winning the Colorado State Fair! •

am Avery Kimble. I live on a ranch in Montrose Colorado where we raise registered Angus and Wagyu cattle. I am a freshman at Olathe high school and love the ranching life. I have shown hogs, sheep, goats and cattle, but my passion is showing hogs. I have won market shows at my county fair and have won showmanship at both county and state fair. This year I plan to join the Olathe FFA livestock judging team and begin competing with them. I plan to attend junior college in Oklahoma and finish at Oklahoma State University pursuing a career in Veterinarian medicine. I am so very proud and humbled to have won the Colorado State Fair Hog show and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to see what the next year holds. â&#x20AC;˘

n August of 2012, my family and I traveled to the Colorado State Fair. I was 8 yrs. old and planned to enroll in 4-H in Arapahoe County that fall.

We wanted to watch the market beef and lambs shows and get a good idea what good show animals looked like. I remember watching the grand champion steer drive. It was so exciting. The cattle looked beautiful, the judge spoke well, and you could feel the anticipation in the air. It was over in an instant with two families celebrating their accomplishments. It made quite an impression on me.

After the drive, I found Cameron Pugh and his family in the lamb barn, and he let me help him walk his lambs around the show ring at the Colorado State Fair! That impacted me so

much that I knew someday I wanted to show market lambs at the Colorado State Fair.

Little did Cameron and his family know how much that experience influenced my life. They planted the seed that developed into a full blown passion for showing market lambs. I went home to Bennett, Colorado, with a fire in my belly. Since that encounter, they have continued to help support my lamb showing dreams, and I am truly grateful to them.

Next came the start of the most important relationship and influence in my lamb showing career. I went to MacLennan Club Lambs to select my market lambs.

Don MacLennan helped me pick out some lambs for county fair. I told him I also hoped to show at the Colorado State Fair. He advised me to come and

look at a set of lambs they would have on an Online sale. We bought 4 lambs that day and purchased two from the Online sale later. It solidified a relationship that I would not change for the world. That summer I had Grand Champion Market Lamb at the Arapahoe County Fair, and took four lambs to State Fair. All four lambs stood in the top five of their class, and I was fortunate to make sale. This only deepened my love of showing lambs. I begged to get to show at the National Western Stock Show. My parents agreed.

We kept two lambs and Logan MacLennan took us to Chad Walker and the Hargrove family to look at some other lambs. My dad and I traveled over Labor Day weekend to Texas to visit the Hargroves. He purchased two lambs, but this visit was an eye opening experience for me.

I had the opportunity to see a first rate show barn with incredible animals and an amazing showman. It influenced how I wanted to show, what we would build for a show barn, and how we would prepare and feed our show lambs for years to come. It also taught us about treadmilling and tracking. It was the foundation point for building our operation.

The lambs we purchased were MacLennan bred. One of the lambs we purchased went on to be the Reserve Champion Heavyweight at the National Western Stock Show. At the time, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize how amazing that was. Now I look back and wish I had that time back.

During the show, Marlin Eisenach had to help me keep a hold of my lamb because he kept jumping.

(Probably because I was squeezing him so tightly).

This introduced me to a relationship with Marlin, and later Lou Cox, that I cherish more every year.

Marlin is instrumental in hosting a Lamb Camp with JB Massey in Brush every year. I attended the camp for the first time that next summer. It was the start of a friendship I will cherish forever. JB and Pete Dempsey nurtured my passion for showing lambs. They worked me hard, helped me improve, and believed in me. They both gave me invaluable information and advice. I hope I make them proud!

Lou has been a constant in my showing career. I believe he has been at the

gate of every show ring I’ve entered in Colorado. He has kept me in line, checking my lambs, yelling at me if I was running late. It is a relationship I appreciate.

Showing would not be the same without him.

Now, it is hard to explain the most important relationship I have in my show ring career. It would be with my breeder, advisor, coach, trainer, and supporter; Logan MacLennan. He is single handedly responsible for helping me become successful in the show ring. He has helped me have competitive lambs everywhere I’ve shown. He has developed my showing style. He helps me show

better, learn to improve, and adjust to each lamb I’m showing. I know that from outside the show ring he may look a little tough, and he probably is, but I’m glad when he is tough on me because I know that means he thinks that we have good animals. I know he just wants me to show them to my best ability. I couldn’t be any more appreciative of all of the help that the MacLennan family has given me.

How I show has been influenced by several great showman: Kayla, Jenna, and Lauren Frink. I admire and look up to them. I love to watch them in the show ring. It is a true honor to be included on

the Colorado State Fair Market Lamb trophy with them. I also love to watch Logan Jackson, and try to learn everything I can from him. He has such a great show ring demeanor and is flawless in setting up lambs.

Obviously, winning Champion Market Lamb at the 2019 Colorado State Fair has provided me a great opportunity to reflect.

Reflect on great memories through the years, and the people who have helped me accomplish so many goals. By far, winning the 2019 Market Lamb show has been the pinnacle of my show ring career. I will cherish that moment for the rest of my life.

To my Mom for teaching me how to become a great showman, helping me with working my lambs every time we go out, and most importantly for always helping me wash my sheep before, during, and after the show. Also to my sister Anna for always being my biggest supporter, competitor, and teammate, you always push me to be the best that I can possibly be. I was afraid I may not every make my dream of winning the Colorado State Fair Market Lamb Show come true. I had to dig deep, renew my commitment to my project, and work even harder than before. have always had an affinity for goats. Despite the lambs, steers, and pigs in the showbarn growing up, I managed to convince my parents that goats were for me.

After many years of learning and getting help from countless mentors, I finally reached one of my biggest goals. Winning the Colorado State Fair feels like reaching the very top of the mountain. After a long summer of feeding and working, I achieved my once unreachable goal. It feels like more than just winning a show, it was a goal that I had worked so hard for and the moment of shaking the judge’s hand felt illuminating. As if everything had happened for a reason.

I have to give credit in many places.

I think of my supporting family, my mentors who chose to help me and so many other kids all because they care about the livestock industry, and God who I believe had a plan. Hard work comes with many small lessons that

accumulate over time, but reaching this goal taught me a huge lesson, trust and faith.

My relationship with livestock has changed dramatically since I began showing. At first I saw no real value and I didn’t really want to try. As I have matured I finally see the appeal, the experience that comes with each animal, each loss, and each win.

Year after year I tried different animals, but always stuck with goats.

They have a sense of personality that I see in no other animal. But this unique personality comes with its challenges, each one is shown differently. My favorite part of the process is getting new ones so I can learn their personality and name them accordingly.

Trusting the process and the animal was a huge lesson I learned with my state fair goat, Barry. He was harder to break than most other goats. I had

to drag him to the wash rack and hold him back from pushing the other goats away from the feeder. Some days it felt like I wasn’t making any progress, but slowly I felt more and more comfortable with him which I believe, made a difference in the endgame. Getting close to him was important in my success. Barry was difficult to get close to, his personality was just that, hard to get along with.

But everyday I walked him, everyday I worked him. By the end he was in no way perfect, but I knew the way he walked and how long he could brace, all of his quirks that I felt knowing, gave me an advantage to my competitors .

By the end of the long summer, I found a sense of trust between us, a victory that speaks more to me than a banner. •

y name is Nicole Nichols, I’m 17-years-old, and I am from Chambers, Nebraska. I am a junior at Chambers High School, in school, I am currently involved in FFA, FCCLA, Band, and National Honor Society. I’m also a member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. I live on my family’s ranch with my parents, David and Lynn Nichols, and my older brother, Taylor.

We currently run roughly 300 head of registered and commercial Angus cattle.

At the start of this summer, I had one goal, to have my foundation Simmental the best she could be for the state fair. I have been showing Angus heifers since I was first eligible and later started showing percentage Simmentals. I always knew showing cattle was a lot of hard work. But I decided after giving up sports, that I was going to put all of my efforts into school and my show heifers.

My heifer’s name is Bug, and she has taught me much more than I imagined possible. The most important thing she showed me was how to persevere. I learned that through every rough patch, there is a silver lining, and you should never give up on your dreams. She taught me that hard work and dedication would get me far in life. While Bug taught me life lessons, I never would have been able to accomplish this goal without the help of some significant people in my life.

First, I want to thank my parents for supporting me and allowing me to show livestock. (Shout out to my mom’s boss, Cara, for letting her off work early to take me to shows.) As for my brother, thank you for watching my heifers when I am gone and at school. You guys are my rock. There are a few people who have helped me more than what was necessary, but I am genuinely grateful. To Cody Jensen and Lynn Ewald, thank you for

taking me to Denver, fitting my Angus heifers at junior nationals and open show at the state fair, and supporting me along the way. Together through those experiences, you both helped make me super passionate about showing cattle and the livestock industry. Cody, you helped me come out of my shell a little more and helped show me the true meaning of hard work and dedication. Thank you for everything.

Bug and I would never have found ourselves in this position without the help of Wayne and Barb Ohlrichs. I cannot express how much their kindness has meant to my family and me. Thank you for supporting Bug and me throughout this journey, I wouldn’t have made it without you guys. Your advice and support throughout this summer were more than I could have ever asked for. From taking care of Bug while I was at Angus junior nationals to watching me show her and helping me become a better showman, I cannot thank you both enough.

Showing heifers has given me a foundation for the rest of my life. I have learned hard work, dedication, perseverance, and many other life lessons firsthand through the livestock industry.

uccess is measured differently by different people. Some believe getting a purple in class is a success while others must win the show to feel success. My family and I have, and continue to measure success based on lessons learned, new friends made, seeing old friends, and of course, the final placing.

I have been raised in the show barn.

My family and I have traveled around the country to different local, state, and national shows. Cattle have always been a part of my life and I plan for it to always be that way.

I first started showing when I was 5 in Denver showing a Shorthorn heifer we raised named Cowgirl. Shorthorns are one of my favorite breeds and have always been in our barn. My mother, MaLaine (Tejkl) Strope, grew up with Shorthorns and when she married my father, Boyd they began to build a small Shorthorn herd. My father

grew up with Angus which originated in Aberdeen Scotland. Shorthorns originated in the Tees Valley of Scotland. So, the name AberTees was formed. We have added Maine-Anjou and Chianina cattle as well.

When I first started showing, I really didn’t know if it was something I wanted to do. I did it because my older sister, Tejlor did and loved it.

My mom will be the first to tell you that I was not a natural. But over the years as I began to show more and more, I gained confidence, watched and learned from my sister and others and it has become a passion for me.

My father has always been the driver of the family. Whether that be taking us to different shows around the country or keeping everybody happy during the show. He is always been there for me and my sister whether we win or lose.

My mother is the “Boss Lady” as my

family calls her. She is the one that keeps everybody in line and makes sure the cattle are doing well. When I first started showing and even today, she is always outside the show ring watching. No matter how the show ends up, I will always have her support and tips at the end of the day.

My sister has always been my biggest helper. When I first started showing, she was there whether it be the show ring or the show barn to help me.

Now as her show career has come to an end, she is on the sidelines watching and cheering. During the summer, she is a major help in the barn, whether that be washing the cattle or working hair. No matter what goes on, I can always count on her to help me do my best.

Another big part of my success has been my grandparents. My grandparents go to many of the shows, especially junior nationals if in Grand Island, State Fair and

success of last year would be tough to match. My 2019 Nebraska State Fair started early in the week with the Open Show. I exhibited the reserve champion Junior AOB heifer and the reserve champion Open Maintainer.

I have been blessed with success showing cattle and I hope to continue.

In no way could I be where I am without the help and support of my family. They have always been there for me, win or lose.

Coming into State Fair, my family and I were not expecting the outcome we received. Last year, I had received the Champion FFA Market Animal.

Coming into this year, we knew we had some good cattle but realized the

I don’t expect the Grand Champion all the time, but my mom always tells me to show like I am going to win. When it does happen, I want to savor the memory. That is why it is important to me to have my family at the show.

This year, I had my grandparents, parents, sister, and even my aunt on the sidelines watching. What matters most to me is that in my success and my worst losses, my family is there to help me along the way.

Going into the weekend, I was hopeful but knew it would be very competitive. Little did my family and I know the weekend would end with the Supreme Champion FFA Breeding heifer and the Reserve Champion FFA Market animal.

At the end of the day, what matters most is the people you surround yourself with and the support system you have in place. I could not be where I am today without my faith, family, and friends. It has been a dream come true to show cattle at a high level and to compete alongside the best the country has to offer. And knowing that I still have a lot to learn in and outside the show ring, gets me motivated to be and do my best.

And like Dave Duello said before he selected the champions, “Never Stop Dreaming.” •

Aksarben. My grandpa grew up showing cattle. He even went to the North American when it was in Chicago with a Shorthorn steer, by himself when he was 15 years old! His experience, knowledge and support helped my mother and uncle raise cattle and compete at a high level at the State Fair and other shows. Both my grandpa, Loren Tejkl Sr. and my uncle, Loren Jr. continue to raise and sell club calves. I can always count on my grandparent’s support and love. I would not be where I am without it.

ur family has been showing livestock for the better part of the last 15 years. My parents, Bryan and Kari Jo Alfs, figured this would be something that we would not only enjoy but something that would instill hard work, dedication, and teach us many life lessons.

So far, these life lessons have paid off not only in the show ring but in various other parts of our lives. We started off with having hogs and sheep when I was about 5 years old. Every morning we would wake up at 6 am to do chores and exercise our livestock projects. This is where hard work and dedication was instilled in not only me but in both of my siblings. As we got older, we began showing different species of livestock. In 2009, my sister, Regan, started 4H and got the great idea we needed show goats. Ever since then, the goats have roamed the pens where the sheep used to be back home in Shickley. Then in 2011, my brother Adam began showing. After a couple years of showing, he decided that he needed something different so he begged for us to try cattle. After a year we caved and began showing cattle. Ever since then our family has been hooked to the cattle ring.

Every year, usually starting in the month of February, we begin our hunt for show pigs for the year. It was about this time that I got a text message from a friend Hunter Lanholff saying that he found a gilt from Mark Hoge that we needed to own. We got a video and thought wow this one special creature. She had everything I looked for in a baby show pig, big stout legs, a good hip and hind leg, an amazing look from the side, and most importantly she was square all the way through. Well we got home and loved her even more. Regan did what she always does with our favorites and gives her a name instantly, “Lucy.” Lucy was always one of those pigs that you just knew was going to get it done in the end. She went to probably a couple dozen show all throughout the summer and

every time that judge would say this one is going to have an amazing future. One of the biggest issues we had with her was deciding if we were going to show her as a breeding gilt or try and run her against the barrows. All the way up till the day we checked in for the state fair we had this dilemma. We eventually decided that we would show her as a market gilt. But man did she give us doubt. The night before the FFA market hog show we showed her in the open jackpot breeding gilt show and just as fate would have it, she goes on to win Grand Overall and really leave you scratching your head thinking if you made the right decision. Waking up the next morning, you could tell she was feeling good and was ready to have a great day. She goes in for her class and Ben Cooley, our judge that year, walks us for a little longer than the previous classes. He eventually lands on selecting Lucy as her class winner and said this class really cranks up the fire in this show. She goes on to win her division, then the crossbred gilts, and finally she wins champion market gilt. We then took the ride across to the big arena for the final drive to show against the barrows. No gilt has ever been grand or reserve in the FFA market hog drive. Man, did we feel fortunate that Lucy gave us the opportunity to not only get to that drive but get lucky and be reserve overall. After the show was over, someone who I have not only looked up to but respected for the better part of my show career, Kent Langemire, told me, “Congratulations,It takes a special animal to get along once at a state fair let alone twice.” What a weekend! One that always will leave a lasting memory in my family minds for the rest of our lives. After being close so many times before, it feels good to finally get over the hump.

As for my future pans after Lake Land, I plan to attend a University, that is yet to be decided, and study Ag Business, as well as judge on their judging team. After college, I plan to continue supporting and giving back to the great industry that taught me everything I know about being a leader and friend. There really is no better place to be brought up in, than the show ring. y name is Ashtin Guyer. I just recently graduated high school and am currently a freshman at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Illinois. At Lake Land, I am a member of the Livestock Judging Team, as well as the Peer-2-Peer for the Ag Department, which I am always posting to our Facebook and Instagram about things they have going on in the Ag Department! Before I went off to school, I was fortunate enough to exhibit the Supreme Grand Champion Female at the 2019 Illinois State Fair with a Purebred Simmental Heifer. A couple weeks before this, she was also named Grand Champion Purebred Simmental Heifer at the Simmental Junior Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. To say that those few weeks were a dream come true is an understatement. I truly cannot say thank you enough to my parents and sister Nalaney along with our Team for everything they have done to make these dreams come true!

HENNEY ou can find me, Harlee Henney tucked away in Northeastern Indiana. I’m a 12-year-old showman that loves to work side by side with my sister Harper. Together we live on our parent’s farm in Angola Indiana where we raise cattle and my dad grows corn, soybeans, and lots of hay. My parents, Mark and Melissa, grew up showing livestock against one another all through their 4-H careers. So, showing livestock is in my genes.

to do is to try to get more hair on my steer then my sister does, which is not easy. We are always comparing with each other as we count down the days to State Fair.

I also love to hang on Duke’s neck when he is tied up to the gate. He was such a lover! Nothing is better than taking a quick nap on the show box, sheep stand, or any other place I can find after I get my work done. During calving time, I enjoy laying on mom and dad’s bed watching the cows and checking for feet.

This was my 4th year in 4-H. A goal of our families has always been to win the Indiana State Fair. The last two years we were Reserve Grand, but this year we finally did it-Grand Champion Steer! My steer’s name was Duke. Duke was a favorite of mine from day one. His personality was sweet, and he loved to be lazy.

Besides showing animals I enjoy competing in gymnastics and playing softball. My family always jokes that I’m good at gymnastics because I was doing flips on the chute and scales as soon as I was old enough to figure out how. I’m pretty sure that there aren’t very many steers out there that get to watch batting practice in the barn while getting worked on either.

My 4-H projects in Steuben County include: beef, beef feeders, sheep, scrapbooking, and Junior Leaders. It’s always fun participating in the Face Off with around 140 other 4-Hers and working in the Junior Leaders pop/candy stand at the fair. Our fairgrounds actually sits on a lake, so we can go swimming once our work is done.

The person that inspires me the most is my sister. We both began showing when we were old enough to hold on and pay somewhat attention. When we practice showmanship in the yard, she will help me so I can try to get better. Harper also leads the feisty ones so I don’t have to when we are breaking calves that we sell.

Our family vacations have always revolved around animals. I’m hoping to vacation out West before my show career is up. So my future plans are to vacation while showing at Kansas City or Denver.

Hopefully I will get another chance to enjoy the fireworks and walk on the dirt in the Indiana Coliseum too. •

RUNKEL i, my name is Riley Runkel, and I exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2019 Wisconsin State Fair!

I am 14 years old and I am an incoming freshman at Burlington High School.

How it feels to follow in my big brothers’ footsteps and win back to back Grand Champion at our State Fair?

Well, the feelings quite amazing… and definitely mind blowing. I was completely aware of the shot I had at winning and how nice of a calf I was blessed with, but I still couldn’t believe I had won. My mind was blown away especially because I competed against my brother Reid for this win, who showed the Grand Champion Market Steer at the WSF in 2018, but also because this is only my second year exhibiting at our State Fair. Doing what my brother had done in 2018 was my main goal for my future in this industry ever since I started showing, but I didn’t think I would’ve accomplished it so soon.

We could never do this without the help of our parents, Ron and Gail Runkel, who have sacrificed so much for us, especially for Reid being a many time national champion in snocross and also being competitive in motocross as he was still showing cattle. The money adds up quick, which is why as a family we decided it couldn’t all be done, and we picked the path that led to the show stock industry which I am grateful for because I grew up watching my brother win continuously, but never got to experience wins I dreamed of for myself. It is so special to me that I am finally getting an opportunity to achieve my goals and feel accomplished.

A lot of kids, young or old, throughout the entire livestock industry dream of Grand Champion with whatever species they may show, so to say I did it at 14 is crazy. It certainly wasn’t easy, but I got by with an amazing show team behind me which mainly consists of my entire family and especially Raymond Gonnet. These are the people who make the win and the hours put forth even more worth it, because they got me this far. They are here to support me, to win and lose with me, to cry with me, and to make me the best I can possibly be.

My only sibling, Reid, and I spent most of our time in the barn working on our cattle together. Reid has grit and works for his goals like no other. Working in the barn next to what I consider my biggest competition is not always easy, but it’s also quite an honor because he is one of my biggest role models. I’ve picked up on many things he does when working on

cattle, but the main things I have learned from him will help me throughout my entire life no matter what activity I am participating in. He’s taught me to stay determined and work hard, that to reach the peaks you have to go through the valleys, and not to worry about people’s opinions on you because, “Who cares what people think.” Reid and I encounter many petty arguments to say the least, but although we can fight like cats and dogs, we will always have each other’s backs no matter what. We are a team, and the success we earn wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have each other.

It’s a common question we’re all asked to explain, elaborate on, put into our own unique words; yet, the answer is typically always boiled down to the fact that this industry is special and there’s really no other way to describe it.

For a fourth-generation Simmental breeder, Nick, and a fifth-generation Hereford breeder, Ashley, the opportunity to combine their passion into their own operation has only added to the indescribable honor that is growing up in this industry.

production of seedstock genetics for the purebred and commercial cattleman alike. They attribute the ability to experience different operations, see different parts of the US and meet influential breeders near and far as one of the driving factors behind their early passion for the industry.

“Being involved in the livestock industry played a vital role in our youth,” says Fitzsimmons. “We know the opportunities afforded to us and the doors opened by experiencing cattle operations all across the country, serving on state and national breed association boards, and participating in other youth livestock programs. These experiences in our lives were, and still are, second to none.”

While being rooted in the legacy of multi-generational operations, Fitz Genetics is still in its early years of operational history. While honoring the foundation genetics behind both the cattle and the people of their

It is one of Fitz Genetics goals to make sure that showmen find that perfect fit when they come look for a calf. Pairing that showman up with an animal that is going to be on target with the show, experience or future—that is the ultimate goal there.

Always building for the future is one of the cornerstone beliefs at Fitz Genetics. Whether that be in their foundation genetics or with the families that they work with. Working with families and youth across the country and helping them building their own herds, learn those valuable life lessons and watching them meet, or exceed, their own goals through showing livestock is one of the driving factors behind what they do every day.

“Raising and showing livestock is about more than just that trip into the ring,” says Fitzsimmons.

“It’s about building the intrinsic motivation to put in the long hours to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself and always be building toward a better future for both yourself, your operation and your family.”

If you’ve ever happened to be ringside when Nick is in the center as an evaluator, or someone who has ever asked him what his “kind” is, you will be familiar with another goal of Fitz Genetics. Hard to make ones—that’s Nick’s type. It’s also a goal at Fitz Genetics. Breeding, raising and selling livestock that combine those hard to make pieces, all in one package is always one of the ultimate goals. The kind of livestock that you leave the pasture or the show and are still thinking about—those kind Nick and Ashley strive to always have in production at Fitz Genetics.

Nick and Ashley feel fortunate to have a strong set of mentors and motivators in their lives both in terms of Fitz Genetics and also their other agricultural industry careers.

Being dedicated to continual learning, improving and honing of their craft, Nick and Ashley are lucky to both also work in the livestock nutrition industry on the feed and marketing sides, respectively. The ability to combine all of your passions and pursuits in life into a singular career across a multitude of “jobs” is one of the most unique and beneficial aspects of the industry.

“Some of my biggest mentors and influencers in life have always instilled in me that the ones that have all the basics of great breeding cattle and then also come with the bells and whistles and extras are the kind you want to use in the ring and also build an operation around,” says

Though less than a decade into the inception of Fitz Genetics, Nick and Ashley have been fortunate enough to have tremendous success in and out of the show ring. With numerous national, regional and state champions to their credit, Fitz Genetics is lucky to have worked with so many amazing families that have helped them earn their start.

“There’s no doubt that to compete at a high level it takes a tremendous amount of time, dedication and discipline,” says Fitzsimmons. “We have a saying around here we use that we think fits us perfectly and that’s that it ‘takes a village’ to accomplish any of the things we do. It truly takes a village to create a champion and help everyone reach their goals. That’s important to us and we are lucky to have such a large supportive ‘village’ that help us get up and down the road.” •

Each year people from around the country visit Milwaukee for one of the Midwest's largest cattle expositions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; World Beef Expo. More than 500 exhibitors from 18 states displayed, exhibited, or sold cattle at the 2018 World Beef Expo. The Open and Junior Shows had over 1100 entries. Next year's World Beef Expo, which takes place September 27-29, 2019 at Wisconsin State Fair Park, will be the twenty-seventh year of the show. During Expo 2019 we are excited to host an Angus ROV Show and more than two dozen other breed shows. In addition to the Open and Junior Cattle shows, World Beef Expo offers a wide variety of activities. The Multi Breed & Club Calf Showcase Sale brings in bidders and spectators on Saturday afternoon. In 2018, the American Royal hosted its largest livestock show in over 10 years. Nearly 1,600 exhibitors from 35 states made the trip to Kansas City for the Royal. Throughout the two week show, over 3,400 head of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest quality cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats were exhibited at the American Royal Complex.

2019 Junior Market Auction Sunday, October 20th at 6:00pm 2001-2018

Distribution of Auction Sale Price: 85% of the sale price will go to the exhibitor, 15% will go to the American Royal up to price levels stated below.

Exhibitors with a sale price less than $10,000 will receive a 100% payout of proceeds due. This check will be sent to the exhibitor via mail no later than January 31, 2020. Exhibitors with a sale price of $10,000 or more will receive an 80% payout of proceeds due. This check will be sent to the exhibitor via mail no later than January 31, 2020. The remaining 20% of the amount due to the exhibitor will be held by the American Royal as a scholarship for the exhibitor.

The scholarship will be paid directly to the exhibitor’s institution of higher learning and will be available upon request of the exhibitor once enrolled in a qualified institution which may include technical school, community or junior college, university, and graduate or professional school. 1 As stated above, 85% of the sale price UP TO the following price level (chart below) will go to the exhibitor. The remaining 15% will go to the American Royal. Once the sale price exceeds the following price, the exhibitor will receive 50% and the American Royal will receive 50%.

Sometimes in our daily lives, we can feel the same way. Some days we feel like it’s myself against the world, or myself against the day, or myself against someone that is causing us grief. That is just not the case though. Matthew 11 teaches us: 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Everyone can feel weary and burdened at times. Life can be stressful in so many ways. The first step is to “Come to me”. Jesus invites us to seek Him in order to find rest.

He wants to come along side of us and teach us no matter who we are, where we are, or where we’ve been. Jesus is gentle and humble, meaning no matter what, everyone is welcome, and he doesn’t judge us.

Feeling alone is never a good feeling, but the Bible tells us over and over again that Jesus is with us.

He knows whatever it is that we’re going through, He is there to carry the burden of our troubles. The hard part is allowing ourselves to

let go of those feelings and let Him. A few years ago, when I was having a difficult time with some things, a close friend of mine told me to visualize laying my head on Jesus’ chest and feel the comfort of His arms wrapped around me. Honestly, it was life changing. It takes practice to truly rely on Him and feel His complete presence with you. We also need to realize that the feeling of being alone won’t go away if you go out and buy something expensive or try to fill the void in other ways.

The best form of comfort and the best cure of feeling alone is found in God. Always keep in mind that our life is not a one-person job. Whether you’re building fence, taking a test, or making a life-changing decision, remember that Jesus is always there for you and loves you. You are not alone. •

n his summer break from teaching school, my younger brother spent the majority of his time rebuilding fences on our family’s ranch. He periodically sent me pictures of the progress he and a college kid he hired had been making. As he wrapped up the project for the summer, he sent a few last pictures.

We had a long conversation about how much easier the project went because he had someone there to help him. He finally understood why, when my dad was still alive, he was so eager for us to come home and help with projects. At the time, he didn’t get it. Having someone to not only lend a hand, but to also keep you company on a project can make all the difference in the world.

When we’re alone, we can feel a

heavy burden of carrying the entire workload, with no one there to give us any support.

I am all about a phone call and catching up with friends and family.

Whether that call lasts 10 seconds or 2 hours, I just prefer it more.

There is nothing like the atmosphere of showing on the green chips in Louisville, being up on the hill or the yards in Denver, and getting to see some amazing friends in Kansas City.

There is no better place to be than in the show ring for class, division, or grand drive. The atmosphere and competitive feeling is second to none in my opinion. Plus, there are always some fun bragging rights to throw around when showing against friends.

I have grown up my whole life showing heifers, so it comes as no surprise that is what I prefer. It is deeply rooted in my family's production and show operation. Because at the end of the day I would love to get calf prospects to put back into my herd.

I had the privilege this Summer to travel around to 5 Junior National Breed Shows, and drove all of it. Traveling just over 13,000 miles to 18 different states. I loved being on the road listening to music or podcasts. Not to mention all the people I called too.

I am thankful you didn't ask me to choose between my OSU Cowboys and Nebraska Cornhuskers. But I love watching and going to college football and baseball games.

Everyone has a story. The Showtimes has allowed us to use our platform to share people’s knowledge, trials, triumphs and words of advice to better the life we live. While at the Nebraska State Fair, we met a young man who shared with us how he has used our magazine to set goals for himself. He reads about how other people have succeeded and tries to mirror that in his own work ethic and ambitions.
