f I have learned one thing in the past few months, it is that no matter what a day brings, the world keeps on turning. With our “This Is Why We Show Tour” covering multiple State Fairs, we were on the road more than we were home and I may be on a first-name-basis with the TSA at Denver International Airport. While exhausting, I cannot describe how rewarding of an experience it is for my family and I to go and be a part of so many other’s stories and memories that happen at these shows. It is so much more than just showing livestock.

When we were finally able to sit down and catch up on life in the office, reality hit. We had a magazine to get ready to go to print. Well aware that so many others in our industry had cattle sales, farming and lives of their own to work on, “busy” was a universal term being thrown around many of our conversations. What’s so refreshing about our “livestock world”, however, is that everyone takes the word “work” literal. I cannot recall one Snap Chat (Yes, I’m in that generation) showcasing one of my friends just sitting around being lazy. The people I deal with on a daily basis may not even realize that hearing about and seeing the long hours that they are putting into their own jobs is motivation for me to dig my heels in and roll on.

On top of everything, there were many

things that happened this past month that really force a person to stop dead in their tracks. Natural Disasters such as Hurricane Harvey and the wild fires up North in Montana and West in California, makes you realize what is important in life. Family. Loved Ones.

Doing the best you can and all you can every single day -no matter how tired or overwhelmed you may be. Seeing people risk their own well-being and put their own lives on hold to help others in need was truly inspiring in today’s day of age.

All of this brings me back to the point that even with so much happening around us, we had a magazine to get ready to go to print. The Showtimes is not just a magazine source to sell cattle or highlight big wins. The Showtimes is a way to capture life - and a very special life at that. Reading through this issue you will witness the “dreams” that came true at State Fairs. The heartache and love that pulled so many people out of a desperate time. The unique stories and opportunities that have shaped so many people to become who they are today.

The world keeps on turning, so sadddle up and look for that perfect 8 second ride. And we’ll be there right alongside you. • See You All This Fall!

BRONCOS KICK-OFF LUNCHEON We had the opportunity to attend the 2017 Denver Broncos Kick-off Luncheon at the Pat Bowlen Field House this past August! Publication Printers who print each issue of The Showtimes, invited us to the one of a kind event! Our printer also prints the Broncos Game Day program! It was held where the Denver Broncos practice and work out. The entire team had

lunch with Denver businesses and team sponsors. Radio broadcaster Dave Logan, former Quarter Back John Elway and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller were all part of the event. We enjoyed visiting with two of the Broncos players at our table, walking through their silent auction and listening to the players talk about the upcoming season.

With a background in cattle, Shane Bedwell has judged National Shows from the National Western to the American Royal. He has played an influential part in the livestock industry through his time as a collegiate livestock judging coach and currently as the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Breed Improvement for the American Hereford Association.

in Medicine Lodge. I have found memories of working the yards at the sale barn and learning the ins and outs of the cattle marketing business. Along with this, I was very active in my local FFA chapter and this is where I caught the “judging bug”. I really looked up to my Ag teacher as he was a legend in our area and was the same guy that taught my dad and mom, when they were high school. Needless to say, Mr. Poland was a seasoned veteran and a guy that I was eager to learn from. I really enjoyed learning the fundamentals from Mr. Poland and traveling to competitions to see the stock and compete. In between contests I would take what I learned and study the stock we had at home. Between this and Mr. Poland’s coaching I became addicted to livestock judging and set a goal to best that I could be. From day one I wanted to go to college at Kansas State University. Initially as a kid, it was because of their football program and watching wildcat football on TV on Saturdays. But then realizing in high school that they have a livestock judging team and the best coach in the country (Dr. Scott Schaake), I said this is a no brainer. My senior year in high school, at the Kansas Beef Expo livestock judging contest, I was fortunate to get recognized for a high set of reasons, the officials that day were from Butler County and that is where I met Mr. Chris Mullinix. After a recruiting visit and a scholarship offer I

rom a young age, cattle have always been my passion and I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to grow up on a cattle ranch near Medicine Lodge, KS. This may come as a shock to some of you but I didn’t grow up showing cattle. Although my family has deep roots in the cattle business, showing cattle was never on my granddads or dads minds and so consequently it wasn’t part of what I was involved with as a youngster. My family’s operation consisted of stocker cattle, a cow-calf operation and raising crops most of which, was feed for our cattle operation. On top of this my grandad ran the sale barn

the front range were instrumental in shaping the career I have today. Again, I had great mentors Dr. Brett Kaysen, Dr. Kevin Pond and Mr. Bill Wailies all of which helped me become a better teacher and coach. As well I’m very thankful to the many RAM alumni and friends of the program that hosted judging workouts and supported the team. I was blessed to coach many successful teams at CSU, but beyond the trophy cases I’m proud to see these young people making a difference in their communities and within the Industry. My greatest accomplishment though in Colorado was marrying my wife Lacey and starting our family together in Fort Collins. Both of our children Cealy Rose and Chisum were born here and I’m very thankful for the many memories that we started along the front range.

Today our home is in Holt, MO about 30 miles north of Kansas City. I work for the American Hereford Association as the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Breed Improvement. I’m very blessed to work for a great organization and interact with the greatest breeders in the country raising Hereford Seedstock. It’s truly exciting to see the level of enthusiasm for the breed right now and I look forward to seeing continued growth in the future.

I’ve had quite a ride and this year at the National Western Stock Show it came full circle for me. I had the opportunity to judge the market steer show with Dr. Clint Rusk and Dr. Dave Duello, two legends in the business. Rusk is from the same county as I in Kansas (Barber County), Mr. Poland also coached him in high school and I took my teams at CSU to practice at Duello’s on a regular basis, which are fond memories. During the grand drive, Duello says in his speech “surround yourself with good people and keep dreaming”. Well the good Lord has certainly looked out for me and surrounded me with some great people to shape my life to what is today and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t dream about my future goals. •

decided to take a two-year detour to Manhattan to judge for Mullinix. The saying a small fish in a big pond would describe where I started at Butler and I owe Mullinix a lot for taking the time and believing in my ability from day one. Although, I had competed extensively in high school in the state of Kansas, I was nowhere near the same caliber of my teammates nor had the national experience that they came in with. But with a lot of hard work and correct mentorship from Mullinix I ended up getting cards at every national contest. More importantly though I met some incredible friends during my stay at Butler many of which I still talk and interact with today. Traveling up down the road with a great group people and the memories we created together are the moments that I still cherish today. Most of us on that that team transferred to KSU to judge for Schaake and we ended up being the reserve national champions. To fulfill a dream of mine by judging for KSU and representing many of the great alumni that had judged at KSU was great honor. After completing my bachelors in Animal Sciences and Industry, I chose to pursue a Master’s at the University of Illinois.

Because of the impact that Mullinix and Schaake had on me, I was compelled to try my hand at coaching and was offered the assistant livestock judging coach position at U of I, where I helped coach three teams while completing my Maters in beef cattle nutrition. I was fortunate to coach with Dr. Dan Shike and received great mentorship from Dr. Doug Parrett. My U of I experience was a great one and again the friendships and Industry connections made during my stay were priceless. During my last semester at U of I the coaching positon at Colorado State University became available and as fate would have it I landed the job. I was fortunate to coach eight years at CSU while serving as an Instructor in the Animal Science department. Those eight years along

he foundation for what is G&G Cattle Company (G&G) today, started in 1988 with one shorthorn cow. From there a small hobby cowcalf operation formed under the ownership of the Green and Gunther families. The families bred for functional females and county fair steers for Gerald and his sisters.

The family had home grown success at their county fair and they sold a handful of calves at a local club calf sale, but the farm continued to be a small family endeavor.

watched their dad, Mike Green, and Dr. John Gunther, build what is GGS Genetics today, a successful embryo transfer business in Michigan. While Mike and John worked to provide quality services and built relationships with cattlemen and dairyman throughout Michigan, they also enjoyed days at the office where Mike’s children could see what they spent long hours building. One of John’s fondest memories was of Gerald at a young age helping with a 4-H tour of the businesses facilities.

During the tour, John stepped away from the group for a moment while Gerald took it upon himself to describe what GGS Genetics was all about, “they take out the poop and put in the calf.”

Since then Gerald has not only learned that embryo transfer is a bit more complex, he has

also found himself using both the people and cattle skills he developed while growing up with his dad and John. However, Gerald’s story does not start where you’d imagine. Gerald grew up surrounded by cattle, both beef and dairy, but he did not grow up dreaming of a career in the agricultural industry. Watching his dad and John work excruciatingly long hours to build their business, provided Gerald with an incentive

to find a career where he would have more freedom to maintain a small hobby farm. It was not until one summer night after his freshman year of college laying out in a field watching the sun go down, while fixing a haybine, that he wanted to find a way to make a career in the cattle industry.

Throughout the rest of college Gerald worked to improve the

genetics of their small herd while building relationships within the cattle industry. He was developing a passion for all aspects of the cattle industry and was determined to see his dreams become reality. In 2011, after graduating college, Gerald branded the namesake G&G Cattle Co. and began the expansion. While the herd and cattle business were growing Gerald worked along side his dad and John as an embryo technician

While the construction was full steam ahead things were also changing in the Green family. In the fall of 2013, Gerald and I married. We met while studying Animal Science at Michigan State University. Now newlyweds with the interest of saving money for a home and heading into a winter calving season, we became resourceful. We not only successfully survived our first year of marriage, but we survived it while living in a one bedroom apartment, in the main barn, during the worst winter Michigan has seen in some time, all while calving triple the number of cows we were accustom to. Nothing says couple’s bonding like moving pairs from one pasture to another during a below zero blizzard!

for GGS Genetics. Over the coarse of 2012 a 100-acre farm was purchased in DeWitt, Michigan, with an existing barn and infrastructure to raise cattle, as well as an additional 100-acres in Mason, Michigan, for hay ground.

Then began the work of fitting the facilities in DeWitt to match the needs of both G&G, as well as GGS Genetics. The original facility was developed to house cows on pasture, provide indoor calving pens and equipment storage, and a chute system that was used when needed. They needed a set-up that could handle the

demand of cattle flowing through the facilities daily. Donor housing was created for both beef and dairy clients.

Beef donors are housed outside in dry lots with barns for shelter while dairy donors are housed indoors on bed pack. An IVF lab was added with a second hydraulic chute and in-floor heat was added to the equipment bays to house the mobile labs. The most recent construction has been the sale cattle facility adding wash racks and fans to the barn to allow for efficiency in prepping calves for sales and shows.

Today the families herd has grown to roughly 150 head, approximately 2/3 of which are commercial Sim/Angus cows used as embryo recipients. The remainder of the herd encompasses elite donors and AI mated cows. We strive to offer a diverse selection of genetics offering Charolais, Chianina, Hereford, Maine, Shorthorn and Simmental breeds. The goal is to always provide a selection of calves that will excel in both the show ring and the pasture. Gerald says, “diversity and high quality cattle help us to overcome obstacles like our geography, Michigan isn’t really on the way to anywhere as far as the cattle industry is concerned so we have to make sure our cattle are worth the trip. We just don’t have time for average!” Most recently G&G has made the move into promotional sires taking their first bull to Denver this past January and receiving very positive feedback. Each year G&G sell their top prospects through a Fall Selection sale while also having calves available through private treaty.

With the growth of our herd and the new facility, a new home for GGS Genetics and G&G Cattle Co was created. Gerald now spends his days

managing cows full time. His days are split between our herd and the GGS genetics client donors being housed at the facility, which can add upwards of an additional 100 head of cattle. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to raise our own cattle while also having the business opportunity to house and care for fellow cattlemen’s elite donors.

However, Gerald’s days as herdsman could be numbered. We welcomed our first child, Owen, in June of last year. He already has his sights set on dad’s job to the extent that his second word was ‘moo’ (first was mama of course).

“That’s the dream, to build something that I can one day walk away from and see what mark my kids can make with it.” – Gerald says. However, we are still young ourselves and we aren’t done leaving our own mark. We hope to continue to grow the herd from within’ and strive to produce and sell high quality cattle. We want to help push the industry here in Michigan to be players on a national scale, and motivate young people that stay involved in the industry beyond their show career. We both enjoy being involved with National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Michigan Cattlemen’s Association, and organizations like Michigan Junior Livestock Society, to give back to the industry that has given us so much.

ave you ever had a calf that no matter what you tried, didn’t want to lead? You work and work, and maybe put him on a donkey for a while and still, he didn’t get it.

The calf just pulls and fights until he’s got down ears and a sore chin, but still doesn’t get it. Sometimes I think God looks down on us and feels the same way. We have all the tools we need. He gives us His Word to live by, and we can study scripture and believe it in our hearts, but when it comes to completely walking the walk, we seem to be like the stubborn calf, and choose to sometimes take the hard road.

The Bible tells in Romans 10:13 for “Everyone who calls upon the Lord will be saved”. This is our promise.

Sometimes in life, it’s easy to excuse ourselves from living right, because we know that Jesus will always forgive us. As Christians, we are given the “freedom” to make our own decisions and make our own mistakes. When we choose to live life our way instead of God’s way, we are actually creating a different kind of bondage and we are not actually free at all, we are a slave to sin. We can’t truly experience God’s joy if we are bearing the burden of sin. Choosing to sin is choosing to suffer.

Paul teaches in Galatians 6:7-10 “7Do not be deceived.

God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will receive eternal life. 9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Monetary things, social media and busy schedules can be easy to get caught up in and make us lose focus of what’s important. We may not think of these things as “bad” sins, but any time we aren’t living for God, we aren’t pleasing Him. In 1 Peter 1:14-16 the Bible tells us “14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

Just because God will forgive us, doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences that cause us or those around us pain.

Just remember that we serve a patient and loving God that would rather spend His time blessing us than forgiving us.

Don’t be like the stubborn calf, follow God’s lead. •

Shirley and Chandler have both won Grand Champion Pie at our county with this recipe!

My mother-in-law's secret recipe. I guess it’s not a secret anymore! - Burt Derryberry

3 egg yolks 3 c. milk 1 tsp. vanilla 1/4 tsp. salt 1 c. sugar 4 T. cornstarch 1/2 c. coconut

Beat egg yolks. Mix sugar, salt and cornstarch. Add to beaten egg yolks and mix well, adding 1/2 c. milk.

Heat 2 1/2 c. milk and add to mixture. Cook in the microwave or over medium heat until thickened.

Remve from heat; add vanilla and coconut. Cool slightly and pour into a 9 inch baked pie shell. Top with Never Fail Meringue.

NEVER FAIL MERINGUE Never Fail Meringue 1 T. cornstarch 1/2 c. water 6 T. sugar 3 egg whites pinch of salt

Mix cornstarch, sugar, water and salt. Cook over medium heat until thick and clear. Beat egg whites until frothy. Pour cornstarch mixture into egg whites and beat constantly for 5 minuetes on high speed. Put over pie and sprinkle with coconut. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Cool completely before cutting.

am currently a Junior at Iowa State University studying Agricultural Communications with a minor in Animal Science. I have shown ever since I can remember and I would like to stay in the show industry as I pursue a career after college. I hope to get a job in advertising and social media.

Ever since I was able to exhibit at the State Fair, I had the dream of taking home the big check saying, “Grand Champion”. I have been very fortunate in my past years of exhibiting at the State Fair, with several breed

champion heifers, Reserve Overall Heifer, Grand Champion Bred & Owned heifer, and a champion breed steer. But the most exciting of them all was my last year showing at the WI State Fair exhibiting the Grand Champion Breeding Heifer. I could not have accomplished this without my family standing behind me. I can’t thank them enough for helping me when it is needed, pushing me to be the best showman that I can be and presenting our animals to look the best that they can. I am extremely proud and humbled to have had a chance to experience this win in my showing career. •

AN EXAMPLE OF SUCCESS DUE TO HARD WORK.

ver since I started showing at the Ohio State Fair I had dreamed of winning the Supreme Champion Junior Heifer.

It’s a really good example when in your own life you can actually see that hard work really does pay off! My body was covered with chills and excitement when the judge slapped Black Betty on the rear end. Tears filled my eyes when I realized that my dream had actually come true. I am so proud of what my heifer has evolved to and all the hard work everyone at Green Oak Farms and myself had put in for this win. This win was truly amazing and even more so when I saw a tear of joy in my grandpa’s eyes when I hugged him and said, “we did it.” I’d like to take this opportunity and thank everyone who helped me along the way. I’ve been to many shows and done well, but this one has meant the most to me.

Being able to say that I won and that I shared the win with the people who have been with me since the beginning of my journey is a real gift. •

Winning Grand Champion Steer at the Ohio State Fair meant a lot to me, because all my hard work finally paid off. I have been working very hard for many years to get to where I am today. I’ve never been prouder of myself. What made the win even better was that I did it next to my best friend Montana Hulsmeyer, who won Reserve Champion. I can’t wait to get started on next year’s livestock projects. •

y name is Addison Jones. I am 14 years old and I have been showing steers for 7 years. I am a freshman at Allen East High School. In addition to showing steers, I also play soccer. I have a twin brother, Caden, who also shows steers. My favorite part about showing steers is being in the ring but I also enjoy watching the steer grow and change throughout the 10 months that we have him.

eegan Michael Murphy was born in 2007 and lives in Seneca, Il. Although he was not raised on a farm, he was introduced to steer showing in 2015 by his dad Mike Murphy whose passion is raising and grooming show steers. In 2015 he picked his first two crossbreed steers and named them Diesel and Thug.

Although they were intimidating at first, you could see a new bond forming. In 2016 he picked Shorty, Ted and Radar. His crossbreed steer Radar was a confidence booster winning reserve grand champion at the Illinois state fair at the age of 10 and only his second year in showing in 2017. Although doing chores in the early morning and late at night his passion is growing to love his steers. When he is not doing chores he loves to fish and ride bikes with his friends. His experience of showing steers will continue to grow strong in his future. •

ONE GIRL...TWO CHAMPION BANNERS

was standing outside speaking with Chris Danner one afternoon at the World Pork Expo when he told me, “You’ve got to be good enough, to get close enough, to get lucky enough.” In my few years of showing livestock, I don’t believe that I’ve ever heard a statement more true. To say that the 2017 Illinois State Fair was one to remember would be an understatement. Even after one month of reminiscing on the memories, I still haven’t grasped what my family and I were able to accomplish.

Since the time I was born, the agriculture industry has encompassed all aspects of my life. My parents, Todd and Kim, grew up showing cattle and have continued to allow our family to do the same. Twelve years ago my dad started Caldwell Show Cattle in the small town of Elmwood, Illinois. As I grew up, I had the opportunity to work with multiple families alongside my dad, trying to see each of them reach their goals.

After many years of convincing, I was finally able to show a steer of my own, and let me tell you - there is still no feeling that can surpass showing cattle, in my opinion.

From that time on, my family and I have been incredibly fortunate at both the state and national levels. While I wouldn’t trade these experiences for the world, it is important for me to realize the sacrifices my father has had to make in order for me to succeed. Aside from initially affecting his business, he spend weeks away from his family; missing birthdays, holidays, and sports events just to see me succeed - something that I will forever appreciate. My dad always reminds my siblings and I to work hard, be dedicated, respect those that make their living in the industry - only after that will success follow. Alongside my father were a team of people that enabled me to accomplished all my dreams over the years. Brandon Jones, Bob Bruns, Will Coor, Kevin and Genna Bremer, Jared Boyert, Mason Perez, Chase Taylor, Lane Steinke, Isaiah Bridwell, and Jerryd Ehrnthaller were a few that I will never be able to thank enough.

Without your love and support, I know that none of my success would be possible. These individuals may not realize the impact they have had on my life, but they have helped shape me into who I am today. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart, I love you all.

At the beginning of this summer, my sister, Maddie, was offered an internship for the Summer of 2018 that honesty is still taking some time for my adjust to. I knew that this past state fair was going to be her last, and wanted to work hard, but still spend as much time with her as possible, as it would be my last summer with her living under the same roof. One of the most important lessons that she ever taught me was to cherish and enjoy what’s going on right now in life - because it goes incredibly fast. To look back on my last 4 years exhibiting at the Illinois State Fair, I have been fortunate enough to have the reserve middleweight division in the crossbred steer show. Despite the fact that this was an awesome accomplishment, I always dreamed of winning the steer show. Never in a million years did I expect to conquer that dream at such a young age.

Last September, my dad began getting a few calves in that he had purchased, and like every year, I starting gathering a list of my favorites. We got my steer, Snuggles, in the beginning of October and from the moment I saw him, I knew that I wanted to spend each and every day working with him. At the National Western Stock Show this year, I was told that I

you guys for everything you guys do for me, it’s nearly impossible. Maddie, you have taught me life lessons that no one else could. You have pushed me to be a better person in life and to never give up. You leaving for college last year was a challenge for all of us, one that I have still not fully gotten used to. No matter how many miles away you ever are, I want you to know how much I love you. To “Baby Bill”, you may only be 11 years old, but you are one working machine. Thank you for picking up chores for me when I was gone this summer at basketball, or at while I was exhibiting at other livestock shows. Thank you both for being my biggest supporters, my best friends, and my greatest inspirations.

Winning the heifer show on Friday evening was completely unexpected, and to follow with an incredible day in the steer ring - there are simply no words. The emotions that overcame me that day are still prevalent today, as I’m sure they will for years to come.

needed to pick which steer I wanted to keep for state fair. This decision was one of the toughest I’ve ever had to make. After Denver, I finally decided to keep Snuggles and sell my other steer. The decision was easy when I knew he was going to be sold to an awesome family. Although this moment was special, no phone calls were quite like the one when my dad told me that I was getting a heifer to show. If you know me and my family, we usually just show steers - with that being said, when my dad called and said “I’ve found a good one”, I never expected what he would bring home the next week. I’m not going to lie - she had a personality of her own then, and still does now. Despite the fact that she occasionally wanted to give me a run for my money, I immediately fell in love with her feisty attitude. The way she walked around with such class was something that I loved. Alongside the memories that she provided me with, the memories that I have made over the past year are absolutely irreplaceable. To each and every friend that I was able to make at Junior Nationals and beyond this year - thank you for including me like I was one of your own.

Those 5 words will stick in my mind forever as a dream finally became a reality for me and my family.

Exhibiting livestock brings on a lot of responsibilities, late nights, early mornings and not a lot of free time, but it is worth it when you have your calf get slapped in the championship drive.

I realized at a young age while watching my older sister Danielle

show that I had the passion and drive for wanting to exhibit livestock.

When I turned 8 years old I finally got the chance to begin my show career. Danielle was finishing her 4-H career and my dad agreed it was time for me to begin. The first show I went to was the Alpha Gamma Rho Winter Preview show in Columbia Missouri in 2009. I continued to travel to various prospect shows until I was old enough to join West Des Moines Live Wires 4-H Club and exhibit at the State Fair. The experiences I have gained and the memories are something I will cherish forever.

Currently I am a sophomore at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School where I am involved in 4H,

baseball, basketball and football.

I would like to thank my parents for all the support they give me throughout the year and letting me be able to compete at such a high level.

I would also like to thank my sister Danielle, cousins and Grandma for the help this summer with Cue Ball while I was busy with athletics. Tracy, Macey and everyone involved at Goretska Show Steers, without them none of this would have ever been possible. Lastly, to Dr. Mark Hoge for selecting me Grand Champion. Dr. Hoge used the words and the theme, “Nothing Compares” and nothing ever will compare to the 2017 Iowa State Fair. •

AN HONOR FOR A HOME STATE BREEDER

THE 2017 IOWA STATE FAIR CHAMPION STEER AS A CALF

ere at Staley Show Cattle we strive to raise State Fair quality steers of all different breeds; along with maternal based heifers with enough eye appeal to succeed in the show ring but ultimately make donor females in the pasture for our buyers. We concentrate on raising cattle that are functional first and foremost. We want our steers to have plenty of muscle and bone structure while still being able to get out and move with ease. We started raising show cattle in the spring of 2000 by AI’ing 20 cows to raise steers for us boys to show.

That eventually led to us expanding into breeding the majority of our herd towards the show cattle industry. We have a row crop operation where we grow corn and soybeans and run about 200 cows where we use artificial insemination as well as embryo transfer.

Currently, we have an annual private treaty sale on Labor Day weekend where we sell 30 head of steers and heifers and have another sale in early November where we sell another 20 head. We have been having our own Private Treaty Sale since 2007.

Raising show cattle has become a family affair for us. My parents Dean and Sharon started us out with their cow herd and us three boys, Nolan, Brad, and Luke, have continued expanding and pushing our genetics forward to better suite the industry. It is a dream come true for us to have raised the Grand Champion Steer at the Iowa State Fair. It is a big accomplishment to raise the steer that wins any state fair, but when it’s your home state, it means a little more.

We will continue to strive towards raising steers of this caliber to compete at state fairs around the country and hope to someday return to the winner’s circle of winning the Grand Champion Steer honor again. •

I! My name is Hunter Lock. I will be a Junior in High School this Fall. I live on a corn, soybean and show cattle production farm near Packwood - a small town in South East Iowa.

If I’m not in the barn or helping around the farm, I keep really busy running Cross Country and Track. I also enjoy livestock judging. My favorite part of being around the farm is calving season! It’s fun to see how they change from babies, to sale calves to their target show.

This summer I had the honor of showing the Grand Champion Market Heifer at the Iowa State Fair! It was amazing! My Dad and I, as well as, my mom and sisters spend countless hours in the barn working on our calves.

ast year at the Colorado State Fair lamb show, I had just an okay day. I mean it’s hard to have bad day at State Fair with the dairy bar and all the good food. It was respectable by all means but not what I was looking for that day. So, at the beginning of the show year when I was just getting baby lambs, I made my goal to be more prepared for the state fair in hopes of doing better. This year I worked to have all of my lambs walk better than they were at previous shows. I also worked on the individual things particular to that sheep. In the end, I accomplished my goal and man did it work. That day I had two division champions and two firsts. By the time the drive rolled around, I was amped because my brother and I had four in the drive and I thought I might have a shot. Being in a contender spot in the Grand Drive is nothing short of an adrenaline

rush. All that adrenaline was turned into happiness when the judge shook my hand. I was honored to have the Reserve Champion Lamb at the Colorado State Fair.

I got the lamb from Jason Lents in Iowa. His name was “Columbo” and he was one of the most fun sheep to show. He was also my showmanship lamb and helped me win Senior showmanship. I would like to thank my family for a lot of help along the way. My little brother helped me a lot by doing my part when I had to be gone. My parents helped me get the lambs shown and fed right, and all my grandparents were there for support on show day. It is great to know that you have people that have your back no matter what. I know that days like that are very special but rare. I also know that days like that are even sweeter after the years you do okay. •

began last Fall when my dad went to RJ Cattle Co. near Mitchell, SD to look at calves. I can remember my dad texting me pictures and videos of this steer as I was unable to make the trip. This steer stuck out to me because he looked just like the steer I had purchased from Nick Reimann in the fall of 2013. Throughout the Fall and Winter, Joe Brandt, my brother, Korbin, and I took “RJ” to numerous jackpots around South Dakota.

I never won the shows but most times found myself making it out of division with him only to get beat in the final drive. I didn’t

n High School everyone has a goal, to either win the state football championship or state basketball championship. My goal was to win the South Dakota State Fair Steer Championship. A couple of years ago my parents bought me a sign that reads, “This is my sport” and it has a steer face on it. Showing cattle is my sport. I started showing steers when I was 14 years old, I am currently 18 years old and grew up on a fourth-generation cattle operation near Stockholm, South Dakota. I graduated from Milbank High School this past spring and am currently attending South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD majoring in Ag Business and minoring in Animal Science. This September I exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer at the South Dakota State Fair. The road to the State Fair

get upset during these losses instead I saw them as an opportunity and that’s what made me work harder. In April, we buckled down and started making sure that “RJ” was on track for our State Fair which is Labor Day weekend.

I must commend my brother, Korbin, for helping me in the show barn and not getting frustrated with me even if it meant staying up till after midnight to wash after a show. We spent all our mornings and nights in the barn.

Rinsing, brushing, blowing, brushing, and repeating those steps. In June, we attended the Charolais Junior National in Grand Island, Nebraska.

I enjoy going to the Jr. National each year because it is a time to catch up with friends that you might see just once a year. After coming home from the Charolais Junior National we continued our routine of early mornings and late nights in the barn.

In July, we took “RJ” to the South Dakota Summer Spotlight in Huron.

He was named the 4th Overall Market Animal and at that moment I knew that if I kept up the hard work I would have a shot at the State Fair. When August came around it was a difficult time for me. I had to move into college 10 days before the State Fair.

Fortunately, my dad and brother took

over and dropped what they were doing to make sure that the calves were taken care of just as if I was still there. During the State Fair, I kept my focus on showing and not on having fun. On Sunday, the day of the 4-H steer show, we had an excellent day starting off with my brother winning Champion Charolais steer with one that he raised, my Chianina steer being named Reserve Chianina, and “RJ” winning his class and being named Champion Crossbred Division 2 Animal. After he was selected out of his division I was proud not because I beat numerous other great steers, but that I was finally seeing my hard work pay off. When it was time for the final drive it was humbling for me to see everyone else’s hard work stacked up against mine. When I got the handshake, I wasn’t emotional about it - instead I was proud that I had accomplished my goal. Having received the title of Champion Market Steer means a lot more to me than the banner and trailer. I view it as a legacy because my mom won the exact same title 30 years before me and it shows that hard work will pay off. In the future, I want to provide the same opportunity to my kids so that they too can grow up in an industry that teaches so many life lessons.

I’d like to thank the Reimann Family for donating the EBY trailer in memory of Nick; breeder of the steer Thomas Ranch; Kelly Short for raising the steer; Kendall Bremer for critiquing me and helping get “RJ” to look his best; Ryan Johnson for his endless work clipping, advising, and trusting me with this calf; and Samantha Messmer for helping wherever and being an excellent cook!

Showing under Dr. Clint Rusk was an honor. I don’t recall a judge who took the time as he did to work with the youth in the show ring to help them set up and present their animal for his best evaluation of them. One day if I am selected to judge a show of this magnitude, I plan to pattern myself after Dr. Rusk. A special thanks to Joe Brandt for being the best big brother that I never had, and my parents, Donnie and Krecia, for giving me the opportunity to show cattle and supporting me in whatever it is that I do; my sister, Kiera, for proving to me that if you work hard to achieve your goals they can come true, and my little brother, Korbin, for working harder than ever this summer, doing chores and making sure the calves were taken care of when I went to college. Having the Grand Champion Steer at the South Dakota State Fair is a moment that I will never forget! •

E

veryone has a story.

Some more unique than others. To the outside world, Ty Warren would be known as #94 - a NFL first round draft pick (No. 13), All Pro Defensive Tackle who sports two New England Patriot Super Bowl Rings and represented his team as Captain at Super Bowls XXXVIII, XXXIX and XLII. From the perspective of the livestock industry, however, his name is associated with that of Outback Ranch.

A Registered Purebred Simmental cattle operation Warren started that includes a division of Angus alongside their seed stock breeding program. Ty Warren is not just a star football player with a passion for

cattle. He is a driven individual who lives on the foundation of hard work, family and consistent quality. Virtues that have allowed him to tie his two, seemingly vast different, professions together. Working off of each other to form a real asset to the livestock industry.

The Showtimes first crossed paths with Ty Warren a few years back in the Yards at the Denver Stock Show. From our first meeting, we recognized his passion for cattle. Over the year’s we have built a relationship with Ty and Outback Ranch that has ultimately developed into a friendship. Through working on his operation’s marketing and coverage, we always knew Outback represented high quality cattle; so when we had the opportunity to travel down to his ranch located in Millican, Texas (just outside of College Station) this September, we were impressed to say the least. What stood out

more than the cattle, however, was the man behind the operation. Being able to sit down on the barn’s front porch and have good old fashioned conversation with Ty, we realized right away the depth of his knowledge and drive for this industry. Outback Ranch is working day-in and day-out to be a reputable name here for the long stay.

Ty’s story starts in Bryan, Texas.

Growing up just minutes from Texas A&M University, coupled with his build and talent, Ty was made to play football. He studied Agriculture Leadership and Development at TAMU. His beyond solid college football career as an Aggie put him on the National radar where he was drafted No. 13 by the New England Patriots in the 2003 NFL draft. Ty regards his time playing under Bill Belichick (Patriots Head Coach) as, “better than any business school I could have attended.” The knowledge he gained playing professional football for the Patriots has come full circle and is now implemented into his cattle operation. Following his stay in New England, Ty came back to College Station to finish his degree.

Before returning home for good, Ty ended his NFL career playing for the Denver Broncos from 2011-2012.

Ty’s wife Kesha has been by his side for his entire journey through college, New England, Denver and now Outback Ranch. The Warren family, including Ty and Kesha’s six daughters, Brionna (15), Braille (14), Bailey (10), Brooklyn (7), Braylee and Brilee (Twins, 1), live an active life. In addition to showing and working with cattle, the girls are highly involved with competitive sports. Brionna is a part of a traveling softball team and Braille travels with volleyball. Outside of sports, their daughter Brooklyn has has taken a liking to guitar and is well on her way to being a future rock star!

Ty and Kesha’s mindset to do things the right way has rubbed off on their

daughters. With that mindset comes the desire to give back.

In 2016, Ty and Kesha opened Field House Sports. A State-of-the-Art 35,000 square foot facility that provides athletes of all ages and ability levels with a place to train, learn and play year round. The facility houses top workout equipment, a regulation size indoor baseball diamond and indoor batting cages. Throughout the year, Ty host various camps and events at the facility. It has allowed Ty to take his experience and passion for sports and give back to the community and the younger generation. The Field House is conveniently located just down the road from the ranch, allowing Kesha and Ty both to help with day-to-day activities.

What is the common denominator between an All Pro NFL Career, running a sports facility and a growing quality cattle operation?

Hard work. We witnessed first hand the time and dedication that Ty gives to Outback Ranch. He is committed to doing everything the right way.

Building up his genetics one brick at a time – he keeps his standards high and his foundation strong.

Our trip came at an opportune time as Outback Ranch gears up for their Wrecking Crew Sale being hosted through Breeders’ World on October 9th. We were grateful for the opportunity to talk with the ranch’s manager, Webb Fields, while on our visit. It was evident that he and Ty

While in Texas, we visited with Ty’s Uncle, Henry Day. Henry grew up on the property where the ranch sits and he resides there now. The land has been in the family since 1891. Although Henry helps with multiple day-to-day operations at the ranch, his prize responsibility is the grass. He has won conservation awards for planting and maintaining numerous grass varieties and erosion control. The ranch proudly displays a sign notating the quality of the conservation of it’s grass at its entrance. It is important for Ty to have family involved in everything that he does.

While at his ranch, two things were noticeable. Quality was consistent throughout all of his cattle and it was a stress free environment. Over the weekend, we saw multiple people come and go, cattle being dropped off, sale cattle being clipped and babies being tagged. The ranch maintained a calm atmosphere that the cattle obviously thrive on. Everything from the sorting facility and working barn to embryo lab and cattle runs are functional and well maintained. Even the grass at Outback Ranch has a story.

are on the same page as they sorted through their impressive set of sale calves with us. Sometimes we would just sit back and listen to them discuss their genetics and plans for the future.

One of Ty’s main objectives is to utilize his own genetics throughout all of his cattle and breeding. Outback Ranch maintains a very hands-on approach where if they can do it themselves, they do. Going through the pasture pens we saw calves out of OBR Cat Daddy, TNGL OBR Fortune 500 and The Godfather. While pointing out various calves’ genetics and goals for their futures, Ty came alive. It was evident that he is exactly where he wants to be. When asked what he would do if he hadn’t done the football he responded, “I’m doing it.”

So while everyone has a story, it is what you find when you read past the cover that tells whether or not it will be a best seller. Ty Warren was a professional football player, is a family man, a business owner and a cattle breeder. Beyond that, he is a hard worker with an eye for quality and a determination to do things the right way. “I did football because I was good at it. I do cattle because I have a passion for it.” Whether you are at Outback Ranch visiting with Ty and sorting through their genetics, viewing their cattle sales online, or looking at their string at a show you will come to realize that Ty’s story is unique, but his cattle genetics are solid. Relationships to him are important, and there is value to being a part of the Outback Team.

Faithful followers…I’m giving you a heads up right now. The ride this time is somewhat helter-skelter. In other words, there’s no rhyme or reason to the direction I’m going with this one. Just sharing some of my all-time favorites that I haven’t had the opportunity to share before. I’m going to start off with one hidden. You would have to be at the National Barrow Show in scenic Austin, Minnesota to ever find this place; and that would be Lansing Corners Supper Club. Having had the opportunity to dine here on several occasions, I have not had a disappointing meal yet from the Blue Burger, the Grilled Shrimp and last, but not least, the Ribeye. Along with the flakey baked potato this is as good as it gets along with a salad bar that may be somewhat small; but the quality makes up for its size.

The prices and the service here are another reason it’s on my list of favorites!

Well folks, after all this time Betty Reid called me out. She figured out that I was not sharing one of my all-time favorite places to eat. That would be The Latin King in Des Moines, Iowa. The Latin King is world famous for its Italian cuisine. Founded in 1947, this place has survived the test of time sticking to the old country recipes that have made it famous. My absolute favorite dish here is the chicken spedinei with the alfredo sauce. Now that’s the bomb. I have yet to find this item on the menu anywhere else.

The bruschetta at this place is my favorite item when I’m looking for a change of pace from the ordinary!!! I do have to give them kudos for their steaks, but, sorry guys, they are the number 2 place in Des Moines when it comes to steaks for me. Not saying they aren’t awesome, but there’s another place in Des Moines that just hits me when I want a great steak. I would suggest calling ahead and making a reservation because the word is out with the locals, and this place is usually very busy!

BEST BITES The next place on my tour would be Polly Anne Cafe in downtown Woodward, Oklahoma.

Now remember, I gave you fair warning when we started out this time that it was going to be somewhat erratic. This place was started in 1928 as a candy shop. It moved across the street from its original location to its current location in 1953 and is still owned and operated by the Williams family. You may need to put this place on your dining list if you are in Woodward for the NJSA Southwest Reginal Swine Show or if you’re just passing through and need a good home cooked type meal. The fried chicken here is awesomely good and the burgers are nothing to be ashamed of either.

The generous portion of homemade chicken fried steak is a pleasant surprise; and finally, at this little joint is the full-blown breakfast. You would be hard pressed to find one any better anywhere. Oh, did I mention the prices here may be the best part of the meal - very very conducive for a group of stock show faithful’s!

Last, but certainly not least, would be the oldest bar in Oklahoma (if you want to call it that). That would be Eischens Bar in Okarche, Oklahoma. This place has been in around since 1896. It is notorious for its fried chicken and okra. Yep, pretty basic menu but they’ve been throwing it on the tables for decades and it always tastes the same. By the way, don’t bother asking for tea or coffee because they aren’t on the menu! Don’t be surprised if you show up at this place on a Friday or Saturday night and see the crowd here waiting to find an empty table (seat yourself); but the wait is sure worth it! When you say Eischens in Oklahoma, everyone knows what you’re talking about!

Serves 4 to 6

If using table salt, reduce the amount to 1 teaspoon.

Ask your butcher to prepare a trimmed, center-cut Chateaubriand from the whole tenderloin, as this cut is not usually available without special ordering. If you are cooking for a crowd, this recipe can be doubled to make two roasts. Sear the roasts one after the other, wiping out the pan and adding new oil after searing the first roast. Both pieces of meat can be roasted on the same rack.

1 beef tenderloin center-cut chateaubriand (about 2 pounds), trimmed of fat and silver skin (see note) 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see note) 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black peper 2 teaspoon unsalted butter, softened 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 recipe flavored butter (recipes follow)

1. Using 12 inch lengths of twine, tie roast crosswise at 1 1/2 - inch intervals. Sprinkle roast evenly with salt, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let stand at room temperature 1 hour. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Pat roast dry with paper towels. Sprinkle roast evenly with pepper and spread unsalted butter evenly over surface. Transfer roast to wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet. Roast until instantread thermometer inserted into center of roast registers 125 degrees for medium-rare, 40-55 minutes, or 135 degrees for medium, 55-70 minutes, flipping roast halfway through cooking.

3. Heat oil in 12-inch heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high head until just smiking. Place roasted in skillet and sear until well browned on four sides, 1 to 2 minutes per side (total of 4 to 8 minutes). Transfer roast to carving board and spread 2 tablespoons flavored butter evenly over top of roast; let rest 15 minutes. Remove twine and cut meat crosswise into 1/2 - inch thick slices. Serve, passing remaining flavored butter separately.

t is a way of life which has rewarded the diligence and perseverance of countless generations. A practice as old as time itself, wreathed in traditions passed down through the centuries. Livestock production, has not only served as a method of preserving life throughout history, but for those who experience it first hand, it is considered to be life itself. Though the animal husbandry methods of our predecessors may have been enhanced using modern tools and mindsets, the deep rooted love for such an industry has allowed this business to continue to flourish. The Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University has long been dedicated to the preservation of this timeless art by providing graduates to the industry who exemplify the intelligence, experience, and work ethic it takes to become leaders in agriculture.

Honoring the livestock industry’s rich heritage and eternal traditions, the Texas A&M University Livestock Judging Team takes pride in developing students who go above and beyond in pursuit of success. The knowledge and exposure gained from practicing and competing has consistently enhanced the ability of team members to excel in their field of interest. The tremendous support system comprised of former students, faculty, and the student body itself, has

allowed Texas A&M to field exceptionally competitive teams year after year.

“The history and tradition surrounding our University and judging program, make being a member of this team an experience unlike any other. It is a special feeling, knowing after this fall, our team’s picture will join the ranks of those Aggies who continue to make a big impact within our industry every day,” said Logan Browne, 2017 team member from Bowling Green, Ohio.

From the first intercollegiate stock judging team in 1904 to the present, the one hundred and six teams from Texas A&M have yielded countless industry leaders in every realm of the livestock world. Not to mention a healthy representation of twelve National Champion titles (1913, 1919, 1959, 1965, 1967, 1987, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2013) which positions Texas A&M as one of the most dominant judging programs of all time and, accordingly, sparked the adoption of the slogan, “Producing champions for over a century.”

From the outside looking in, the road to success for any competitive livestock judging team may go under appreciated. Assembling a team of college students in their early twenties, who hail from a variety of states, and possess a plethora of mindsets, backgrounds, and

experience levels, can be a challenge in itself. Yet the power of time, in conjunction with an open mind and slight lack of personal space, cultivates tremendous unity amongst team members. When individuals from different walks of life come together with a common goal in mind, their differences fade away, and are replaced with friendships that last a lifetime.

The exponential personal growth each team member achieves throughout their collegiate judging involvement, gives these young men and women the ability to pursue their goals with determination and confidence.

“Students should leave this program with a positive, impactful experience,” said Keaton Dodd, livestock judging team coordinator. “I hope they take with them the knowledge and skillset which should not only allow them to prosper within the livestock industry, but ultimately in any profession they choose.”

The coaching staff strives to develop key attributes in students such as, critical thinking, public speaking, and a highly competitive spirit which serves as a driving force

in the pursuit of success in livestock judging contests.

However, a few potentially more important goals go beyond fundamental contest preparation. Primarily, students are to realize, while at Texas A&M University, they should prioritize the completion of their degrees, therefore academic achievement is highly stressed. In addition, each coach labors to encourage the development of real world understanding by pushing the minds of each individual beyond a traditional four head class.

Furthermore, the formation of students into respectable and valuable members of the industry, as well as society, is a true testament to any livestock judging instructor.

“When I decided to become a member of the Texas A&M Livestock Judging Team, I knew my coaches would help me become a better livestock evaluator. Along the way, they have had an incredible impact on my ability to confidently make decisions, and have enhanced my desire to continuously become a better person each day,” said Emily June Kelley, 2017 team member from Yoakum, Texas.

During their time on the livestock judging team, students have the opportunity to experience a vast assortment of events, places, and people as they provide assistance with the program’s fundraising activities and additional responsibilities. Often students may find themselves in the role of officials as they organize and run various youth livestock judging contests across the state of Texas. These youth judging contests include events such as, State 4-H Roundup, State FFA Finals, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the State Fair of Texas, and multiple other local events.

Educational judging clinics and camps held in the spring and summer give the judging team a chance to flip the script and step into the shoes of their coaches while instructing youth livestock enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels.

In conjunction with the Texas A&M Saddle and Sirloin Club, the livestock judging team assists in putting on the Saddle and Sirloin Futurity and Judging Team Extravaganza livestock shows during the first weekend in August. All of these activities allow members of the livestock judging team to play a key role in building

the program’s funds in order to accommodate travel expenses.

For more than a century, members and supporters of the livestock judging team, have built a foundation comprised of nothing but excellence.

The dedication of students, both past and present, has solidified this program’s permanence as a leading enterprise in the collegiate livestock judging community.

Once an individual has made the commitment to pursue knowledge and victory as a member of the livestock judging team, they become something greater. Students who have endured the blistering cold, scorching heat, frustratingly long nights, and mental exhaustion in order to better themselves, become part of a special family comprised of Aggies who have made the same pledge for distinction amongst the livestock community.

This program would gladly welcome with open arms, any who are up to the task of becoming the next member of the Texas A&M Livestock Judging Team. Become a part of an organization shrouded in traditions of superiority within the livestock industry. THIS IS Texas A&M Livestock Judging.

› The first time I entered the Qwest Center (now the CenturyLink Center) I was blown away. It was 2003 and it was the first year in the new facility. We had traveled from Brighton, Colorado and when we arrived with our steers and lambs I couldn’t believe that I would get to show in a facilty like that. The building was lit up with blue lights with the Omaha skyline behind it.

As we pulled in we were greeted by friendly staff and even offered donuts and coffee. As I opened the Northeast doors of the barn I was amazed at just how big the Qwest Center was. It was my first show where every animal was stalled and shown under one roof. It was truely a show of the future. I was fortunate enough to make the sale.

Taking an elevator up to the top floor with three steers was a very cool experience. To this day it is

one of my favorite experiences I had showing in 4-H. My family and I have traveled and shown at shows all over the country from Louisville to Denver, and they are all great and unique. Omaha remains my favorite. The show facility is top of the line, there are great restaurants and hotels nearby, an outstanding rodeo and good booths and shops.

Since 2003, we have only missed one show. Omaha was definitely the show I always looked forward to every year!

With Aksarben moving to Grand Island this year, we thought we would share some of our favorite photos from our past coverage of Omaha! Thanks for all of the great memories!

When I read this quote, I thought, Wow! What an awesome saying; that is exactly what we have seen in the last few weeks as we have dealt with Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.

Experts and meteorologist told us for several days ahead of time that the hurricane is coming and that we should be prepared for a long wait. This was a very different kind of waiting. We waited to see where the storm was going to go. And then we waited. And then we waited some more. No one seemed to know where this storm was going to go. The cone of uncertainty was huge and pretty much encompassed all of Texas.

When the rainfall predictions came out from anywhere between is between 25-50 inches , the only thing you know to do it is get everything up high because we had never seen that much rain.

And then you wait some more.

As the realization of near record breaking rainfall became more of a possibility than a forecast, people began to take some precautions.

Ranchers moved cattle out of river and creek bottom land that is prone to flooding and homeowners

in flood plain areas moved items up high or removed them from the structure itself. I don’t think anyone was full prepared for what this hurricane would bring.

After the slow moving Hurricane Harvey finally got here, to our area, we were thankful to not have much damage. Sure there were trees and limbs down and some high water in spots, but overall, you would be surprised at how fast the parched ground can soak up 25 inches of rainfall. But, we were the lucky ones.

Our neighboring towns were underwater and it is an understatement to say it was devastating. Hurricane Harvey moved so slow that it seemed to drag out for days. Literally 5 days after the storm hit us in Fayette County, areas around Houston, Wharton, Beaumont and Winne were still getting rain. There was a highly palpable sense of panic when you were able to make it to the grocery store and they were totally sold out of water, milk, bread, and chips. Gas stations as far North as Dallas were out of fuel. When I finally could make it to our neighboring town of La Grange (home of the song from ZZ Top), about 20 miles to our

North, it looked like a war zone.

The Colorado River had risen to over 50 feet and reached the third highest level ever recorded.

Residences and a nursing home were evacuated, some by airboat in the middle of the night as the water continued to rise higher than expected. Cattle that were thought to be safe on dry land had to be moved even further inland, in some cases they were caught on islands and had to be rounded up with airboats and pushed to swim to safety. In the end, over 300 homes in Fayette County along were destroyed by the flood, most of them along the Colorado River.

Several businesses in La Grange were also affected, including the community’s KC Hall.

In the days following, everywhere I looked there were volunteers.

At one point there were over 600 signed up; so you can imagine how many didn’t even sign in.

Everyone volunteered in their own capacity. You had people gutting houses, cooking food, and organizing donated items. You realize when there is something catastrophic what businesses really step up. Texas is lucky to have HEB, a grocery chain that is truly a remarkable; they served meals to flood ravaged towns,

Our thoughts go out to all of those effected by the recent fires and hurricanes. It is hard to comprehend the damage. A special thanks to Becky Allan and Logan Goudeau for sharing your story.

The 54 Texas counties that were declared a disaster area due to Hurricane Harvey contain over 1.2 million head of beef cattle, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture inventory report.

That is about 27% of the states cowherd. In Wharton, Texas, home of the famous V8 Ranch, there are reports of the river being over eight miles wide at one point. Thousands of cattle were moved and the stories of neighbors helping neighbors was so touching. At one point, the mayor of Houston made a plea to “bring your boats.” And boy, did they ever. Dave had left to go judge a show and I didn’t even think he was going to get anywhere.

Interstate 10 was jam-packed with nothing but trucks towing boats and National Guard vehicles. It was the most incredible sight. Our hometown of Schulenburg was a holding point, so the town was full of power trucks, rescue vehicles, etc. It literally brought tears to your eyes to see the people from

other counties and states coming to help. Tyler and I delivered 1000 hamburgers to an Elks Lodge in Katy as part of the American Beef Battalion. We brought food and served it out of the back of our car.

I brought Mason with me, hoping that he would get out of it exactly what I did. It certainly feels so good when you can do something for others.

One very important thing we learned thought this experience is that sometimes it is not easy to help in a situation such as this. It takes time and patience.

Home and business owners were overwhelmed; some residents have to wait on insurance adjustors before they could begin demolition or removal of debris. Sometimes you find yourself driving around hoping to help someone in some capacity.

Hurricane Harvey has certainly left a scar on Texas. The beaches and the farmland will one day repair and replenish; the cattle and wildlife will once again thrive.

The people of Texas have had their hearts broken on this emotional ride. In spite of it all, Texans have come together. We have shown the world that we rely on and support each other and that we will prevail!

What I don’t think people fully understand is the scope of the damage. The impacts of Hurricane Harvey reach from Orange and Beaumont, to La Grange and Bastrop, over to Victoria and down to Rockport and Port Aransas.

Usually when there is a storm, like perhaps a tornado, one town is hit and the neighboring town is there to help. In this case, the path of devastation and destruction just kept unfolding. The rules were thrown out with this storm.

Nothing was “normal” about it.

Even if you lived on high ground and were not directly impacted by the flooding, you felt the repercussions. For days after the storm (and in the case of some of these, even weeks later) you could not rent a U-Haul, find a storage unit, rent a home, find a hotel or fill up with gas for miles.

distributed free water, drinks and cleaning supplies to the entire community and even had their own employees (or as they call them, partners) out volunteering in the community. Friends and family from all over reached out to check on us and in this livestock business; you realize how lucky we are to be in the business we are in. You realize then what is really important! I had avoided the news before the hurricane; it had become too political, negative and divisive. After the hurricane hit, there were so many stories of goodwill and neighbors that had never even spoken before, all helping each other with their homes because nobody else could get in. What we see really depends on what we focus on and it was so uplifting to be focusing on all of this positive energy in the midst of a devastating storm.

The Fall show season has always been my favorite fom the steer show in Kansas City to the Grand Heifer Drive in Louisville. As our “This Is Why We Show” Tour continues, we are looking forward to having our Aunt and Uncle, Bob and Virginia Beebe, back with us at the American Royal. Being able to do things as a family is very special.

My duties at The Showtimes deal mostly with that of the signs, banners cutouts and stickers you see online or at the shows. I have been working on multiple new items that will be debuted at our Showtimes booth in Kansas City!

Everything will go online for sale that week as well.

We love what we do and this tour has been a great way to meet and cover people from across the industry.

Everyone has such a unique story and I love learning about everyone’s life.
