TO BE GREAT, ONE MUST SACRIFICE THE EASY WAY OUT.

T

he demands of today’s world are greater than they have ever been before. People are more outspoken with their opinions. One has to work harder to be the best. And with everything at people’s fingertips, it requires you to push harder, move faster, and deliver more than promised with no matter what it is that you do. All of this is not a bad thing. It is simply a fork in the road.

You can either go Left or Right. Left is the easy way. The path is clean, the destination is clear and the obstacles are few. Right, on the other hand, is a little more demanding. Sleep may be limited, obstacles abundant and risks will be present all along the way. Going Right may seem overwhelming; but the rewards one will receive along the way make it the best choice.

While putting together this Fall Edition of The Showtimes, I was struck by how many people in this industry have taken the Right path.

For the exhibitors featured in the Show Results, it was no easy task to pick out the right calf; feed them to reach the ideal weight at the right time; work with them to get both their disposition and presentation on point; and walk into the ring fully prepared to get the job done. For the individuals raising and selling their cattle, it was not a walk in the park

deciding on the jackpot breeding; calving out calves regardless of weather or schedule; and marketing their them in a way that reached the right buyers.

The livestock industry is not alone; but it is the only life I know and I can speak from experience. I encourage everyone to not just read this issue of The Showtimes as a tool to find the next “Great One” or to read the features on individuals that are involved and have made and impact on the industry; but to look deeper than the surface. Recognize all of the hours of work, the passion and dedication that it took for people get where they are or dream of where they can go.

Life is not slowing down. Next week there will be a new form of social media to utilize and one more trend to follow in order to “keep up with the times.” Set your goals seemingly out of reach, just so you will be pushed to work harder to reach them. For when you give something your absolute all, you will reap unimaginable results.

Take the Right path.

Our September/October 2016 Fall Edition marks our 50th issue of The Showtimes! The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine was established back on February 1, 2007. Our first issue was release that April and was only 32 pages.

What made you want to be a judge?

When you are not judging or working for ADM, what do you do for fun?

I don’t have many days that aren’t consumed somehow by livestock. I love getting to travel and show with my

What has been your favorite show that you have judged?

I am going to struggle with this because I have many favorites for different reasons, either the people, the quality of livestock, or the location. However growing up as a land locked Wyoming kid, My favorite show has to be the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, CA. A livestock show on the beach, what more could you ask for!?! To top off the location, it’s run by great people! They have lots of fun, future industry leaders, as interns that help the show run smooth. I have really enjoyed all the individuals I have met at this show over the years!

Where did you grow up and what is your background?

I grew up in the great state of Wyoming with several generations of production Ag on both sides of my family. My mom is a saint for all the time she spent shuffling us from one sports activity to the next all while helping take care of a herd of animals, I am certain I may have showed 1 of everything! Judging was always a big part of life, I can recall recording reasons at a very young age. When it came time to go to college I called up a guy by the name of Chris Mullinix and the rest is history. While judging at Butler I lucked into finding myself in the right place with the right people and we had a lot of fun success! I continued on with the judging while attending Colorado State majoring in Animal Science/Ag business. At some point along the way I must have missed that WY is not the Mecca for show

pig production.... despite the climate challenges and lack of corn production we developed Custis Show Pigs and are blessed with lots of great families that have been key to our success.

While attending CSU I was granted an internship opportunity with ADM. This internship led to the job I have today as a ShowTec Specialist for the company. This industry has obviously been very good to me and it is only fitting that I met my husband, Shea Geffert, at a cow sale! There is not better feeling then being blessed with a partner who is my best friend and has the same passion and industry interest!

What does your ideal market steer look like?

My Ideal market steer is the one that’s almost impossible to make. The perfect one for me would be big legged, elephant footed, shaggy haired, freak necked, big backed, and

Being a judge is the product of a lot of events and experiences over the years, not necessarily something I set out to become. The influence of competitive livestock judging at a young age and through college helped give me the opportunities I have been presented. All of the people I have been given the opportunity to work with over the years have been a huge influence. I can’t explain how neat of an experience it is for me to get the chance to judge show and meet kids from one side of the country to the other, after all I grew up in a tiny town in Wyoming!

I love getting to work with kids, if you don’t look forward to that when judging I’m not sure why you would do it! The facilities at Aksarben are pretty amazing and second to none! I am looking forward to the whole experience and am thankful to those running the show for having me as the judge.

My future goals include taking life one day at a time and remembering to enjoy the little things! I have been blessed with so many great opportunities, a lot of which come from the agricultural industry!

As rich as our past may be, today’s K-State team members are excited to put their mark in the history books as well. The 2015 team completed an exciting fall campaign by being named the Champion Team Overall at The American Royal and the National Champion Team in Swine at Louisville. The team also produced the High Individual Overall at both of those final national events with Brandon Machado named high point man at the Royal and Jack Oattes at the National Contest! The 2016 team capped an incredible spring by being named National Champions at the 2016 Meat Animal Evaluation Contest and placing 8 individuals in the top 10 overall.

The current squad represents the diversity of K-State’s Animal Science program with students hailing from eight different states and Canada. As the first fall contests approach, they’re excited

For well over one hundred years, Kansas State University has been committed to the value in livestock judging competition. Some of the most revered teachers and evaluators of livestock have served as coaches and mentors to the many young people that jump in the van each fall with their eyes set on the ultimate prize – The Bronze Bull! The traveling trophy is awarded every November at the National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky and college seniors across the country will spend hundreds of hours honing their selection and oral reasons skills in the chase for that honor. At K-State, legendary coaches like F.W. Bell, Don Good, Bill Able and Scott Schaake have imparted wisdom on countless young people that would ultimately become leaders of the livestock industry while bringing home numerous National Championships.

Those coaches and successful teams developed a culture that remains true to our program today. Done right, there is no activity that will ever compliment your education like collegiate livestock judging.

by the opportunity to represent Kansas State University and compete against the best!

This fall will provide more than its share of memories for the K-State Livestock Judging Team. Like anyone who has ever participated in this tradition, there will be moments of joy and frustration. Our goal is to put ourselves in the position to haul that prized bull back to Manhattan, Kansas. However, here at K-State that doesn’t serve as the single goal. Like my predecessors, I take pride in the kind of people our program produces.

If you have a passion for the showring or simply follow those seedstock programs making an impact in the livestock business, then I guarantee you’ve shown under or studied the breeding strategies of a K-State graduate. I’ll bet they were humble by nature, treated you with respect and showed a keen eye for livestock evaluation. I’m certain they gave you the fair, honest evaluation you deserved and described your livestock with supreme accuracy in the kind of real world, stockman terms that you

could understand. Victories are great.

Our team travels to every competition with the intention of winning and we will prepare ourselves to do just that. Here at KSU, we believe that preparation revolves around a consistent approach to teaching the principles of the livestock industry and giving every student the ability to think for themselves. K-State livestock judging develops life skills that make our students more marketable and position themselves for successes much bigger than the bronze bull they chase this fall. They will have impactful careers, serve as leaders in the community and always keep faith and family at the top of their priority list. The Bronze Bull they bring home will symbolize a championship for 2016, but the skill set they develop will make them Champions for a lifetime – and Champions wear purple!

Somebody wake me up! I know I just finished my State Fair article for The Showtimes and here it is again time for the Fall Edition! That means county shows and fall fairs. Time to sit back and start planning my fall tour of places to dine while on the road working shows.

Let’s start with Tulsa since it’s the first big show for me. I’m giving you a new place to try, but it’s one I’ve took the opportunity to dine at many times. It’s not going to be a fancy place, but you can’t beat it for a great burger! That would be “TY’S Hamburgers & Chili.”

This is a place you would drive by and not give it a second glance - which is what I did several times. Mainly because it is so busy you can hardly find a place to park. But it’s that Hole in The Wall place that is busy for a reason. This place is one of the best kept secrets in Tulsa for some downright good grazing that doesn’t break the pocket book. I have yet to have had a bad experience at this place. Moving right along I’ll quickly mention the old standby’s in Tulsa; and, of course, those would be “Tally’s Good Food Café.” “The Brothers Houligan” and, “Los Cabos.”’ I’ve written about these last three enough even you should know them by heart by now! But if you don’t, you can go to the Showtimes App and check them out on your phone.

Heading North, I simply can’t pass through Kansas City without stopping at “Strouds North.” I’ve been accused of planning my travel schedule around their serving times. I’m still trying to blame them for my inability to lose weight.

Once again, I’ve wrote about this place so much you’d think I had part interest in it! But it is the ultimate place to eat when I’m on the road! The home style cooking at Strouds can’t be beat unless I am at home. It’s not uncommon to find several tables of livestock people at this place during the American Royal. The ultimate burger for me in Kansas City would have to be at “Town Topic Hamburgers.” This little diner has been around forever. Not

to mention that the full blown breakfast here may be the best in town. Parking and seating at this little dive are both very limited, but boy howdy is it worth the wait!

The next stop on the fall tour would be “The Garden Café” in Omaha, Nebraska.

Buddy I’m telling you if you can’t find something here to satisfy your hunger pains then you just can’t be satisfied.

This place has been around for over 30 years and there are several reasons why. From the awesome salads, burgers, sandwiches, pot roast, and pastas to the potato casseroles with meat, there is something for everyone. Oh by the way, did I fail to mention they also have a full scale bakery?? Does it get any better that?? This is like THE place to eat in Omaha!

Last, but surely not least on the world tour, would be “Mazos” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mazos dates back to 1934 and is truly an old school diner if there ever was one. They take pride in grinding their own beef fresh, never frozen, daily - and that speaks volumes for the devotion the family has for their reputation of having been voted the best burger in Milwaukee! A place like this is few and far between and a real treasure when you do find one. I would suggest taking the crew here and make some stock show memories. Who knows, you just might make some new friends while you’re there.

I don’t know about you, but writing this has flung a craving on me for some good food. Kind of puts me in the mood to travel and meet up with old friends.

In short, patience means waiting without complaint. In our society of instant gratification, people often want results NOW, but it doesn’t really work that way. When you expect immediate results, you lose sight of the big picture and the opportunity to achieve even larger goals.

We all know it can be hard to have a good attitude all the time without getting upset, especially since showing livestock can be so frustrating at times. But that is when patience comes in handy. If you stick with the task, slow down, assess the big picture and focus on desired results, you’re less likely to make mistakes and will learn more in the process.

When it comes to your livestock projects, what do you think looks better in the ring: a calf or lamb that’s been clipped or sheared by someone who took the time to learn and practice or ones that have mistakes just because someone wanted to get it done? Consider these do’s and don’ts of patience with your next livestock project.

SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Challenges

and obstacles are a normal part of life, and waiting is an unavoidable part of the process. Winning the banner doesn’t happen overnight, and working toward that goal takes time.

DON’T SET LOW STANDARDS: If you’re not

committed to excellence, how can you achieve it? When you have low standards, you have little desire to work toward success. So, set realistic goals to put yourself on the steady path to the banner.

CAYDE TALKS ABOUT WINNING THE INDIANA STATE FAIR.

y name is Cayde Selke and I am from Frankfort, Indiana. I have been involved in the livestock industry since birth and have been working on cattle since I was two years old. My dad and mom are Aaron and Ashley Selke and I have siblings cordon, Cavin, Carter, and Caisley. My steers name was Sidel but judge Ryan Rash changed his name to “glow worm” because he glowed in the show ring! My family

and I worked so hard on that steer and just knew he was something special. It was an indescribable feeling to win the Indiana state fair. It’s always been my dream. The feeling was just pure excitement, tons of emotions, and most of all it was a family matter so it just showed me why my family and I work so hard at what we do. Hard work will pay off. My future goals are to continue on with the cattle industry, and keep working with my family while I do that. My family is so amazing, and they are the reason that I accomplished my dream.

They do so much for me. I also want to either play college football or continue my schooling at Oklahoma State and major in ag business. •

LUCAS TALKS ABOUT HIS BIG WIN. i I’m Lucas Wisnefski and I exhibited the Grand Champion Steer at the 2016 Illinois State Fair! I’m 18 years old and the son of Jeff & Laurie Wisnefski.

I have three siblings

Jennifer, Dalton and Sydney. I’ve been showing since I was 6 years old. I started with a bucket calf heifer named Sheila that I showed at the county fair.My Grand

Champion Steer was bred by our good friend Dave Cox. This steer was a twin to Lauren Mays Reserve Steer at WI State Fair. The cow raised them both by herself and they weaned at 6 months over 600lbs. a piece. He is sired by Snapchat that is a bull that is out of a cow that Dave and I own together.

I am on our Henry-Stark Livestock Judging Team that won IL 4H Contest, I am on the Illinois State 4-H Team that will judge in Louisville. I played basketball 2 years of high school, baseball 1 year and football all 4 years. My senior year we lost only one game and that was the State Championship. •

LINED UP PERFECTLY

I

KAGNEY REFLECTS ON THE 2016 ILLINOIS STATE FAIR. have been a part of the livestock industry since I was able to walk. I showed my first heifer when I was four years old, and little did anyone know how big of an impact the livestock industry would have on my life. The life lessons, memories and family time out in the barn are times I will forever cherish. My family includes my dad, Brian, my mom, Tiffney, sister, Korbin, and my brother, Kesler. We show and raise mainly Hereford, angus, shorthorn and Simmental influenced cattle.

Korbin, Kesler and I have been very

blessed and fortunate to have had such success show careers. We have competed on state and national levels and had many breed champions and reserves at the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, National Western Stock Show, many division winners at junior nationals and had Reserve Bred and Owned heifer at the 2015 Junior National Hereford Expo.

We are very thankful for those wins as they did not come easy and we worked very hard for them, but going into this year there was one goal that I had not yet accomplished. That one goal was to win the Illinois State Fair. After the 2015 state fair, I had felt that dream slipping away. I had champion AOB and champion Polled Hereford, but was short of making the top

Two weeks before the Illinois State Fair my dad walked into the barn and said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fifteen Minutes: You guys need to be up fifteen minutes earlier, rinse fifteen minutes longer, brush fifteen minutes longer, work hair fifteen minutes longer, practice fifteen minutes longer and be out in the barn fifteen minutes later. We are two weeks from state fair and it is crunch time. You guys have worked so hard for this all year, do not let it slip away now. You will not be outworked!â&#x20AC;?

Those were two of the most stressful weeks at our house. We knew that everything had to line up perfectly.

The more and more I thought about what dad had said, it motivated me to work even harder. At the beginning of summer I set three goals for state fair to win champion cow-calf, have three breed champions in the grand drive, and to win the Illinois State Fair heifer show. I was determined to make one of my goals into reality.

Once we got to state fair and everything was settled in and it felt like things were starting to fall into place. It was finally show day and the butterflies in my stomach and stress level at the stalls were at an all-time high. On the first show day my family was fortunate enough to have Grand Champion Cow-calf pair, champion shorthorn plus and a division winner in the AOB show.

Winning the shorthorn plus show meant I had a ticket to the big dance; the grand drive. We had another early morning on Friday, but it was worth it in the end while my sister had won champion shorthorn heifer. Now my family had two tickets to the big dance, but I was determined to have three tickets. If we had three tickets into the big dance that would mean that my brother, sister and I would all

be out in the grand drive competing and doing what we love against each other, but still as a team. Finally, we had the third ticket to the big dance with our champion horned Hereford heifer, Miley. Quickly we broke her down, washed her and blew her out so we would plenty of time to refit all three heifers.

We were just beginning to refit when it started raining, but the rain was the last thing on our minds. While the Sullivan crew and my family were hard at work, I happened to look up and right by our stalls, there was water gushing out of a pipe that was held together by duct tape. Even with the rain and the waterfall form the pipe we had all three heifers fit and ready to go, we were just waiting for the call to head up to the ring. At this point in time, the whole junior barn was flooded, there wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t power in the whole barn and the lights had just went off in the show ring. The last thing we wanted was for the grand drive to be postponed and even worse, cancelled. They finally made an announcement that the champion Angus drive and the grand heifer drive would take place the next morning. We had to break all of the heifers down again, rewash again and then would have to repeat it all again in the morning. At this point, it felt like everything was falling out of place and my dream may be slipping away.

The next morning came around and we had everything refit and ready to go. While we were headed up to the ring I tried to soak it all in as much as I could. We were all three headed into the grand drive while Kesler was showing the ShorthornPlus, Korbin was showing the Shorthorn and I was showing the Hereford. My stomach was in knots, my head was spinning and my heart was racing at

a hundred miles per hour, but once I stepped into the ring it was game on. I didn’t know how the outcome would be or if I would accomplish my last goal, but I did know that I wasn’t going to be outworked in the ring either, especially by my brother or sister. When we were lined up head to tail while the judge gave his final talk, I looked around the ring at my brother and sister and I could not have been more proud to be out there next to them and it almost made me tear up. The judge finally made his decision, but it wasn’t me. He started to make his way for reserve heifer, my stomach was in knots but finally he shook my hand. It may not have been grand champion, but reserve grand champion felt just as good. I had

finally accomplished one of my goals.

When I pulled over to the side with tears in my eyes I looked at Kesler and he was giving me the thumbs up. After the top five was picked I was able to share a moment in the ring with my sister. The most rewarding part about this win was doing it along side of my family.

None of my accomplishments and success would be possible without my family. Thank you to my mom and dad for always believing in me, pushing me to be the best, never giving up and making the sacrifices you have for me. The early mornings and late nights out in the barn all became worth it. Even though this summer was different without having

mom at any of the junior nationals, it all became worth it at the end since she stayed home to work on the other heifers. Thank you to Korbin and Kesler for letting me show Miley this year. At the beginning of the year she was supposed to be one of yours to show, but you let me show her so I could accomplish one of my goals.

You two aren’t just my brother and sister, but also my biggest competition and best friends. Some people have asked my family if we get jealous of one another if only one kid wins, but at the end of the day we do at as a family. A win for one is a win for all of us. •

Throughout high school I have participated in sports and have been a part of FFA and 4-H. Winning the Iowa State Fair has been such a great experience for me and I feel so blessed. I could not have done it without my older brother Wade.

I am 14 years old and I live in Dunlap, Iowa.

I recently just exhibited in the Iowa State Fair 4-H Heifer show for my 3rd time. The state fair has always been one of my favorite shows. One of my first shows was there when I was around 9 years old. I showed a little feeder calf in the open ShorthornPlus show and ended up getting 5th overall. I was over the moon.

The years leading up to my first time exhibiting in the 4-H show, I remember watching my cousins (James and Nick Sullivan) show there and do well. Even then I realized there was something about that show that made it very prestigious to win, and I knew that one day I wanted to lead a Supreme Champion Heifer into that ring. I’m overjoyed that I was able to this year.

Of course, the day of the show started out as an early, stressful morning. I lead my ornery Chianina heifer (who got

3rd Overall in the show) from tie outs, wishing for nothing to go wrong during the day. Even though you could sense the stress in the air for most of the day, thankfully, everything went even better than we hoped it would.

Later in the the day when I walked into the pavilion and received Supreme Champion and 3rd Overall Heifer, I was elated. It was one of those moments where I couldn’t stop smiling even if I tried. Friends and family congratulated and hugged me.

And I walked back to the cattle barn with my champion heifer in one hand, and a milkshake in the other. (Thanks mom!)

This wouldn’t have been possible without the people who help me everyday in the showbarn, my awesome parents, and the rest of the farm crew who helped during the whole process; from calving out the calves, to production work, and all the other significant details that are involved in raising purebred cattle. •

THE STORY OF A CHAMPION

A

JULIA SHARES HOW HER STEER WON PUEBLO. s the dust settles and I try to get back into reality it’s still sinking in. As I sit and try to put it all together, I am overwhelmed by emotions. I am humbled, this is something most people only dream about and here I sit at the age of 15years feeling blessed beyond measure that I get to live this dream.

Since my childhood I was taught every grand champion is a one-hit wonder and respecting that opportunity was just as important. I started showing cattle only 5 years ago. My Dad started around the same age and I guess you can say he was passing the baton. I was unsure going into this adventure. But after getting Reserve

Champion at the Larimer County Fair you can say it lit a fire in me. I stuck with county fairs for the next few years.

I have been blessed and have been pretty successful with the county fair shows.

My Dad felt I was ready to start traveling and showing at bigger shows. It was fun but to be honest two years ago I wasn’t sure if showing cattle was “my thing”. I took a little break, but during that break I realized how much I loved it. My Dad and I sat down and talked, I also realized if I want to be successful I had to put in the time and work needed. From that moment it was pure determination. So we hit the barn and hit the road. Stock Show, Stillwater, Kansas, Nebraska and Kersey are just a few of the shows I have attended.

The joke in our barn has been that I am the “reserve queen” I just couldn’t win a big show. I have learned hard work and determination is they only way to reach that opportunity. My determination wasn’t going to be enough though. Being a child of a split family makes it difficult to be two places at once. Living in two different towns makes it even more difficult. That

is why I can’t take all the credit for my success. We have our “A-team” my family who has supported me and given me the confidence to great things.

I joined my FFA Chapter at Poudre High School last year and I am still a member of the Larimer County 4-H. I have continued to do cake decorating and dance. I show pigs at county fair too. All these things have just allowed me to be a more rounded person. I plan on remaining a member of 4-H and FFA as these things teach me more about agriculture as a whole.

Looking back over the past two years I have learned so many things about myself and about life. I use to be a quiet and reserved person. I wasn’t one to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.

Showing cattle has brought out a new side of me. I can stand tall and have confidence in who I am. I am

not afraid to face a challenge head on. Working with steers who can be a bit stubborn and out-weigh me by a 1300 pounds will do that to a girl.

Putting the work in, early mornings, late nights, feed, water, exercising my steers is hard work. My crew has taught me step-by-step and no longer am I afraid to jump in, I want to be the one doing all the work.

I have a lot of work ahead of me, I have more steers in the barn. I am always needing and wanting to learn more about what it takes to raise a great steer. I have been and will be attending more fitting clinics so that I can be more active in that area too. It’s a talent and I have some of the best fitters (my Dad) on me team to teach me. I hope to continue to grow as a person and continue to form more relationships that I can cherish for a lifetime. •

TORI SHARES THE STORY OF HOW SHE WON THE STATE FAIR! i my name is Tori Crisp, and I’m 13 years old, and I belong to Raymond 4-H. I am from Union Grove Wisconsin which is just south of Milwaukee which is by the Wisconsin State Fair. I’ve been in the cattle industry since I was six years old and plan on doing it many more. I am going into the 8th grade at Paris Consolidated School. My birthday is January 3rd, 2003 and I will be turning 14 in a couple months. My other hobbies besides showing include basketball, volleyball, and I love to swim. I like spending my weekends at cattle shows around the country. I met many people at Louisville

who impacted my life greatly. I got Brett (Favre) in the beginning of November and instantly fell in love with him. The first day I worked with him I knew right away he would be a champion. Finally after all my hard work the Wisconsin state fair was finally here, we waited outside the fair from 10:30pm to 3am, at the time I really didn’t think it was worth it but in the end it all fell into place and I don’t regret being there all night. It was show day everything was going through my mind but, once my dad told me it was time to fit Brett all those scared feelings went away and I was ready to be a champion even if I wouldn’t have won the show Brett still would’ve been a champion in my head and heart. We got into the show ring and i was nervous, excited, and happy to be there all at the same time. I went on to win my breed and instantly everyone I love was gathered around me, we all sat in the tack space and waited anxiously for the champion drive. When I went into champion drive a million emotions went through my head, I walked in and

saw all the people there but then I looked at Brett and was happy to be there. The judge Ryan Rathmann started talking about the Holstein and instantly thought of Brett and how “this is Wisconsin and what is more Wisconsin then Brett Favre and that is what this calves name is.”

He put the mic down and went to pick his champion. He walked right up to me and slapped my calf, and I was instantly overwhelmed with joy and broke down into happy tears.

This was the happiest day of my life.

I would also like to congratulate my cousin Lucas Wisnesfki for having champion steer at the Illinois State Fair. I’m glad we got to share the same feelings. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped me over the course of this year, especially my uncle Steve, uncle Kurt and my grandpa Wisnefski also Ernie and Brandon for the perfect haircut, and my parents Mike and Jenny Crisp and my sister Tanner Crisp. Thank you for all the love and support. •

i I’m Bryana Binkley, 20 years old, and from Jefferson City Missouri.

I have exhibited pigs and heifers at the Missouri State Fair for many years, but this was the first time to exhibit a steer at the fair. Agriculture has been a big part of my life. During my freshman year of high school, I was the driving force that helped start a FFA program at Calvary Lutheran High school. During my sophomore year of school Calvary Lutheran FFA was chartered because of my hard work and dedication. Calvary Lutheran became the first private high school with an FFA program in the state of Missouri. I am currently attending Eastern Oklahoma

State College where I am on the Livestock Judging Team and will graduate in May 2017 with my Associate Degree.

It all started in 1999 when my brother had Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the Missouri State Fair, my family and I had been busy showing livestock ever since then. This year I was fortunate to purchase my steer TED. TED had taught me many things in life; believe in yourself, believe in your animal and believe in God that everything is possible and I wouldn’t be here today without him in my life. When I was picked for overall steer at the Missouri State Fair the tears just started to flow because that all those 2 o’clock mornings and late nights in the barn of hard work have payed off. None of this would have been possible without my biggest support team; my family since this is a family affair and I wouldn’t want it to be any other way. •

More Than Just A Show...

The Riley Round Up for MS is a show held annually in Denison, Texas to raise money and awareness for the National MS Society. Over the past five years, the show has given $30,500 to the organization - raising $8,500 last year alone! Jim Riley, who was diagnosed with MS in 2007, organizes the show. This year’s show will be held December 3rd!

Jim Reid (the father of Showtimes’ owners Brian, Laurie and Lisa Reid) was recruited and offered a full ride athletic scholarship from Nebraska Husker football coach Tom Osborne. Jim turned down the offer from Nebraska so he could play for Colorado State University where he red shirted, played as a star starter and later went on to be a recruiter for the team!

t all started with a bucket calf show and a pair of basketball shorts.

Yes you read that right. Ben and I went to our first cattle show, at the county fair with bucket calves and we showed in basketball shorts.

We both walked away with white ribbons. But we also fell in love with showing cattle - and over the past few years have had the opportunity to show cattle across the country, meet wonderful people and get a little better every year.

Our story, like our family, is not normal. My dad grew up showing shorthorns in Kansas, and in his words, we were just “ok”. They got blues at the county fair and he enjoyed attending the Shorthorn Jr National - primarily for the social aspect! My Mom showed steers and tells stories about showing at the county fair and state shows.

After college, they married and were not involved in the cattle business for several years living in Lawrence, Kansas and Denver, Colorado. They eventually moved

back to Kanas and began a farming operation with a small cowherd.

It wasn’t until Ben and I where old enough to show in 4-H that my parents really got back into it.

After the county fair white ribbon bucket calves incident, (the next year we at least wore wranglers and button down shirts), we would drive out to the farm to work with our calves and we began to set our sights a little higher. As we graduated from the bucket calf program and started buying actual show calves, we decided to move out to the county. My earliest memories of showing calves is my dad and I in a little old barn clipping away on some pretty bad stock, but having a great time doing it.

These early days built the foundation that has given me the passion for showing cattle. We started at the beginning and as a family tried to continually get better and better every year. I think our success over the years has been more rewarding having

built our operation from the ground up and seeking out people who could help us achieve greater success. We also would attend cattle shows which at the time may have been over our heads but it let us see great cattle and meet people who showed us what was possible.

I will always remember going to the Kansas Beef Expo when I was 10 years old and seeing some amazing cattle. We stood at the bottom that year, and in fact the judge showed mercy on me and commented more on my show halter than the calf I was showing.

(My uncle gave me a halter for Christmas to which he added silver buckles. Looking at the latest show supply catalogs, he was ahead of his time.) . As a family we stopped and made a goal to get a little better every year. We were all 202

in. The first goal was to win the county fair. After that maybe a few county jackpots, then just keep learning and improving every year.

We started Nikkel Bros. Show Stock about 3 years ago which is located in McPherson, Kansas.

My goal is to continue to develop our cow herd comprised of lot of our old show heifers to raise not only show cattle, but cattle that have economically desirable traits.

Like my show career it is a work in progress and we try to improve the herd a little bit every year. I definitely want to pursue my interest and passion in the cattle business after college.

Currently, I’m a freshmen at Kansas State University and member of the AGR fraternity. I’m serving a three year term for the

American Shorthorn Association National Junior Board. My brother Ben is Junior at McPherson High School, and has been focusing on his upcoming football season, where he has been named a defensive starter. My Dad works full time running the cowherd and farm, and my Mom is in sales management for for a global technology company. We run a hectic life, but we have a lot of fun doing it. As a family we have never met a cow show we didn’t like! Our weekends and family vacations have been going to cattle shows for the past 8 years.

I am happy to say we have continued to get a little better every year. Certainly we still have a ways to go, but we have learned a lot and we try to be competitive at state, regional and national

shows. We have had some solid results and last year we had the good fortune to have the Grand Champion Shorthorn Plus Steer as well as the Champion Bred and Owned Purebred Steer at the Shorthorn Junior National. This year we were honored to own and show the Supreme Percentage Simmental Heifer at the Simmental Junior National in Des Moines.

Honestly, that was thrilling. I have to thank some wonderful people that, through the years, have given me advice and taught me the art of fitting and clipping.

These same people have been instrumental in helping us pick out calves and shared knowledge on how to manage them once we get them home. Ben and I have spent the last several summers, our spring breaks, or any holiday break from school in the show barn, in

the cooler or on the wash rack brushing and rinsing. My parents believe the best place to develop your work ethic is in the barn and the best place to build character is in the show ring.

Showing cattle has opened so many doors for my family. As I am off to college now, many of my show buddies are here as well and it has been a great support network for me. So many of the people I have met over the past several years have really helped define and inspire my goals for myself, and for Nikkel Bros Show Stock. I am excited about the future. I believe this industry can take you to some amazing places if you let it. I will rely on the principles my parents have preached over the yearsâ&#x20AC;Ś watch and learn from the winners, remember where you came from,

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run anybody else down, work hard and be a good person, when you make a mistake - learn from it and most importantly have fun.

They were right, and by doing this so far, I do think we got a little better every year and we have certainly had a lot of fun doing it! â&#x20AC;˘

When my nephew Brian at age 20 and my nieces Laurie at age 16 and Lisa at age 15 started The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine 10 years ago, little did my husband and I know we would be in any way a part of this outstanding magazine; however, we never doubted for one minute that these outstanding, hard working kids would be successful.

Living in a small mountain town in the Panhandle of Idaho just outside the St. Joe National Forest, my husband and I first helped by distributing The Showtimes Magazine at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. We then moved on to the National Western Stock Show three years ago distributing magazines at the Showtimes’ booth.

This experience was rather new to my husband who grew up in LeClaire, Iowa, but not so new for myself. I grew up on a small farm outside Brighton, Colorado. My two brothers, four sisters, and myself all participated in 4-H and the big event of the summer was participation in the Adams County Fair. We would spend from early in the morning until late in the evening taking care of our animals and hanging out with friends.

The recipe I’ve submitted is my favorite peach cobbler recipe. Please keep in mind that if you use Colorado’s sweet “Palisade” peaches, you will need to drastically reduce the amount of sugar you add.

INGREDIENTS

11 Fresh Peaches - peeled, pitted & sliced into thin wedges 1/4 cup - White Sugar 1/4 cup - Brown Sugar 1/4 tsp. - Ground Cinnamon 1/8 tsp. - Ground Nutmeg 1 tsp. - Fresh Lemon Juice 1 Tblsp. - Cornstarch 1 cup - All-Purpose Flour 1/4 cup - White Sugar 1/4 cup - Brown Sugar 1 tsp. - Baking Powder 1/2 tsp. - Salt 6 Tblsp. - Unsalted Buter, chilled & cut into small pieces 1/4 cup - Boiling Water

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F In a large bowl, combine peaches, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and cornstarch. Toss to coat evenly, and pour into a 2 quart baking dish. Bake in preheated over for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combing flour, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, baking powder and salt. Blend in butter with your fingertipes, or a pastry blender, until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in water until just combined.

Remove peaches from oven, and drop spoonfuls of topping over them. Sprinkle entire cobbler with the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Bake unitl topping is golden, about 30 minutes.

› The first time I entered the Qwest Center (now the CenturyLink Center) I was blown away. It was 2003 and it was the first year in the new facility. We had traveled from Brighton, Colorado and when we arrived with our steers and lambs I couldn’t believe that I would get to show in a facilty like that. The building was lit up with blue lights with the Omaha skyline behind it.

As we pulled in we were greeted by friendly staff and even offered donuts and coffee. As I opened the Northeast doors of the barn I was amazed at just how big the Qwest Center was. It was my first show where every animal was stalled and shown under one roof. It was truely a show of the future. I was fortunate enough to make the sale. Taking an elevator up to the top floor with three steers was a very cool experience.

To this day it is one of my favorite experiences I had showing in 4-H. My family and I have traveled and shown at shows all over the country from Louisville to Denver, and they are all great and unique. Omaha remains my favorite. The show facility is top of the line, there are great restaurants and hotels nearby, an outstanding rodeo and good booths and shops. Since 2003, we have only missed one show.

Omaha is definitely the show I always look forward to every year!

The shows at the American Royal are always outstanding!

It is always enjoyable hanging out in the tie-outs watching cattle be clipped on or viewing stalls in KC’s two story barn.

There is no other show like it.

The show is set in Kansas City, Missouri. The city is filled with unique buildings, haunted houses, rivers and history. The past few years the show has fallen during the World Series where the KC Royals have played. It is always fun to catch a Kansas City Chiefs game if you have time. The Truman Presidential Museum and Library in nearby Independence is also a must if you have never visited.

Junior Show Ring 1 Mark Hoge, IL Mark Hoge is a graduate of Black Hawk East Community College and the University of Illinois. He earned his Master’s degree from Iowa State University, and his Ph.D from Michigan State University. Mark is currently an Associate Professor at Western Illinois University, located in Macomb, IL, where his responsibilities include; coaching the livestock judging team, teaching three agriculture courses per semester, managing the university swine unit and advising the AGR/Hoof & Horn clubs. Mark has had the privilege of evaluating many county, state and national cattle shows for more than twenty years, and has worked with youth from all over the country.

Mark is supported by his wife, Katie and their three children. The Hoge family has a rapidly expanding 4-H enterprise that encompasses raising show pigs, sheep, cattle and horses.

Junior Show Ring 2 Jack Sievers, NE Jack Sievers and his wife, Lori own and operate Sievers Show Cattle located at Randolph, NE. Along with their son, Layne, they raise breeding cattle and club calves. Jack grew up raising and showing Polled Herefords at 4-H and Junior shows. He graduated from Northeast Community College with a degree in agriculture management.

After graduation he worked several years for the University of Nebraska as a beef herdsman. Jack was also herdsman for Bellar Chiangus for several years.

While working there he was selected as herdsman of the year at the National Chianina Show at the North American Livestock Expo., Louisville, KY.

Open Show Ring 1 Mark Duffell, VA Mark Duffell has been the general manager of Whitestone Farm for the past 28 years. He also owns and operates One Day Angus. Between the two operations Mr. Duffell manages approximately 1200 head of registered and commercial cattle, and 3500 acres of owned and leased crop and pasture land. Whitestone Farm holds two annual production sales; a spring bull and female sale and a fall female production sale. Over the past 28 years Whitestone Farm has raised and exhibited numerous national champions.

Mr. Duffell has been judging National, State, and Local shows for 30 years.

He grew up on his family farm in Starr-Iva South Carolina. He was an active participant in the FFA and Jr Angus Association, showing cattle and hogs throughout his junior years. “Whitestone Farm is recognized as one of the Angus breeds leading operations!

Open Show Ring 2 Shane Lindsey, IA Shane Lindsey has more than thirty five years of experience in the beef cattle seedstock industry. Over the years, he has worked as a herd manager, herdsman, consultant and custom groomer. Shane currently operates a custom grooming and hoof trimming service based out of Prairie City, Iowa.

Shane has judged a numerous national, regional, state and local shows in twenty seven states and Canada.

GIVE PEOPLE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT WHEN THEY HAVE A BAD SHOW DAY IN BEING A CHRISTIAN

HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show.

We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!

D

o you know how much it takes to make a county or state fair happen? They are well-oiled machines driven by great leadership and an army of workers and volunteers. Most people cannot fully appreciate the work that goes into the fair, they just see the finished product. The more I am around them and see behind the scenes, I am amazed. What a gift to our communities and our families.

There is also a lot that goes into showing animals and creating projects at the fair. Most people cannot really appreciate all that goes into it because they only see the finished product or the actual presentation. You can have the best animal ever and not show well. Something could spook them or they could just have a bad day. No one can fully appreciate the work because of the show day presentation. That can be tough to swallow.

The work of preparation is no less because the presentation was bad.

This reminds me of walking out our faith in Christianity. Most of the work is done in secret and behind the scenes. Many people only see the presentation of what is going on in life. Any of us can have a bad show day or bad presentation. But

our whole witness can be harmed by one bad day.

There is an awesome comradery that is a part of the Fair Show family. It really is a genuine sense of care and family. No doubt most of us get what this is all about and sportsmanship is definitely a priority even if everyone doesn’t show it all the time.

It brings me to a thought. I wonder why we can’t have more Christian Sportsmanship? Giving people the benefit of the doubt when they have a bad show day in being a Christian. Do we give them the same encouragement to keep going? Do we rally around them when they have a bad day? Or do we sit in judgement and condemn them?

Some people do not like churches. Church to me is all about the spur! I love to encourage people. To me that is a big part of what church is all about. It is encouraging each other in this walk of life. So don’t be afraid of a relationship with Jesus Christ and becoming a part of a local church. It is there to spur you on and gently nudge you in the right direction. They aren’t there to restrict you but to help you on this journey called life.

In the world we live in, there is no doubt that all of us could use some spurring on. I want to encourage you on your journey of faith today. We are all in this together just like the family atmosphere of the County Fair.

We the Church (Big C Church) should be a place of encouragement and spurring each other on to love and good deeds. Are there exceptions to the rule in churches?

Of course in every church I know there are people who just don’t get it. We have them in our church. They kick

I see people encouraging each other and rooting for each other to do their very best. I remember one rider saying, “I want to win, but I want to beat them with their best run not a DQ!” That kind of sums up what I love about 4H & the fair. Not everyone feels that way, but we should.

A spur is a metal tool designed to be worn in pairs on the heels of riding boots for the purpose of directing a horse to move forward or laterally while riding. It is usually used to refine the riding aids (commands) and to back up the natural aids (the leg, seat, hands and voice). Spurs help us get the horse going and hopefully in the right direction.

How do we treat someone who has a bad showing at the fair? We show sportsmanship and try to encourage them through it. We do everything we can to help them understand it isn’t the end of the world. Keep showing.

Keep doing what you do. We showed horses at the fair the last 8 years. What a ride, no pun intended. One of the things that always blessed me was the encouragement from other competitors. It has always amazed me how much respect they have for their horse and the other riders.

Hebrews 10:24-25: 24 let us consider how we may Spur one another on to love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Look at the story of Peter. He was the big bold disciple.

Jesus said, “You will deny me tonight three times before the rooster crows.” Not me Jesus, not even unto death.

Look at the story.

Galatians 6:1-5: 1 Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. 2 Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. 3 If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived. 4 Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. 5 Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life. The Message

Luke 22:31-34: 31: “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

This is an amazing scripture. So what would happen if we all began to love and care about everyone who calls themselves a Christian this way? Could we help each other on this journey of faith? Don’t compare yourself to others. Christian sportsmanship spurs each other on in their journey of faith not condemn them. How are we doing at this?

Mark 14:66-72: Peter disowned knowing Jesus 3 times.

When he realized what He had done, he broke down and wept. I love what Jesus said to him in His warning of what was to come when he denied Jesus. Listen to this:

Romans 12:18: If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

So how are you doing in your walk of faith today? Are you spurring others on by how you conduct your life? If others follow your path, can they find Jesus Christ? Are you truly following after Him? You can. You are a prayer away from greatness.

But when you do, (deny me), strengthen the brothers.

Once we have failed, we can help others not to. Don’t go fail to help others, but when you fail, use it for some good, helping others. How can any of us look down our noses at each other when they fail when at times we all fail? We all have and will fall short at times in our journey with God. Encourage your brother when he stumbles.

Pick him up and keep him going forward.

Look at how Jesus treated the disciples after they all betrayed him on the night of his crucifixion. John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Peace be with you. Wow, talk about encouragement. You let Him down and all the first words he says to you are “Peace Be With You!” Aren’t you thankful for forgiveness when you fail Jesus?

None of us can make it without it. If Jesus responded with peace when betrayed, why can’t we respond with peace when others fall short. Look at what He says for us to do when someone we know fails the Lord.

If we could just make this a regular part of our lives, how much different could our community be? I pray you can use this encouragement and Christian Sportsmanship today.

Batteries are charged; photo storage is formatted and counted; Lens are cleaned and packed. In most cases Brook Cagwin is co-pilot and recorder; the “ear getter” is on board; her vehicle fueled.

We will kick off our Fall Tour in Omaha, Nebraska at Aksarben. Our family remembers walking into the Century Link Center (then Quest Center) for the very first time and being in awe of the grandness of the facility and show.
