Moments like that, or when we talk to an excited grandparent about their grandchildren getting a Showtimes show stick and comb, are the most rewarding aspects of my job.

My family always has a blast trying to think of or find something new to implement into The Showtimes.

Show Center Videos, the Showtimes Phantom, and Beyond the Backdrop exhibitor bios are prime examples.

What’s even more rewarding, is seeing how we can excite others through what we do. This past August, Laurie and I were working the cattle rings at the Colorado State Fair. Matt Leo from California was the judge for the breeding show. He was so

friend of mine once told me that sooner or later I would have to grow up and get a real job. That livestock shows were nothing but a hobby.

Little did they know that a few short years later Brian, Laurie and I would start a junior livestock magazine. A magazine that we used to tie us to a lifestyle we were not ready to ever leave.

One of my goals for The Showtimes was to create a magazine that not only showcased the livestock industry, but allowed people from within it to call it their own. Everything in this issue, from the articles and special features to the show results and ads, is put together with that goal in mind.

SCHLIPF TAKES HOME TOP SHOWMANSHIP HONORS

Codee Schlipf, the daughter of Ryan and Sherri Schlipf of El Paso, Illinois, was named the winner of the 15th annual Illinois Master Showmanship Contest at the 2014 Illinois State Fair. This prestigious award is given to an exhibitor who first won the Champion Showman at their county contest, then went on to compete against all of the Champion contestants from fifty-one counties across the state in all three species. For the title of Master Showman, Codee was awarded over $1,000 worth of prizes including a showbox, a $500 gift card, a chair, and a belt buckle. Codee is currently attending Illinois Central College where she is majoring in agriculture and is a member of the livestock judging team.

I

t’s Friday, August 22nd, I am sitting in the Manhattan Kansas Airport, awaiting my plane home to California. I spent the last few days in Manhattan making sure my son, Brandon, was ready for his next big adventure, senior college at K-State.

Hi, my name is Stacey Machado, my husband Martin and I are the proud parents of Brittney, 23 and Brandon, 20. Together we comprise M&M Livestock.

to be independent workers because of the hours of dedicated time living on a ranch and hours in the show barn.

I know what hard work looks like because I too grew up in the barn mine was just a commercial cattle ranch and a horse barn.

As I sit here and reminisce over the past few years, it’s hard to think my youngest is now off to senior college and that my show mom days are something of the past. Show moms across America have dropped their children off to school this week in hopes to better their education and develop as individuals.

It is a bittersweet time, agreed? Whether it is kindergarten, junior high, high school, junior college or senior college, I can bet a time of reflection and a few tears have been shed!

Growing up around the livestock industry would’ve made you guess I wanted to be a cowgirl myself, but that was in fact the last thing I ever wanted, I wanted to be a city girl.

More importantly, I wanted a sidewalk instead of corrals and a barn. I went to college thinking I would graduate from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California and move to LA and become a Fashion Merchandiser for a large Department Store. As reality sets in, dreams change, and I found myself falling for a cattle trader as far from the city as I could get.

God had different plans for me and I am forever grateful.

The last time I was in Kansas was in May with my entire family celebrating the graduation of our daughter Brittney, which seemed like yesterday. On Thursday, I watched my two children leave at 4:00 am, reaching Manhattan the next day around 3:00 p.m. I love my children dearly but wanted to continue that “loving feeling” without duck tape being applied to my mouth! I met up with them late Monday night via air travel. When I boarded my plane Friday, I knew Brandon was ready for me to leave and ready for school. I knew I was leaving him in great hands at Kansas State University.

Being their show mom over the years has made me very proud. I know they are both unique in their own ways and will be successful in their future endeavors. Being involved in livestock through 4-H and FFA has taught them

livestock at the county fair every year and were completely submerged in the cattle industry. Soon after we got married I too fell in love with the cattle industry and wanted to be a supportive wife. We had our first child Brittney and knew that down the road she would be showing livestock just like her dad.

Three years later Brandon graced the world and I knew that we would have two showmen on our hands.

The day Brittney turned nine she asked if she could join 4-H and show a lamb, now lambs weren’t my husband’s thing, but daddy’s little girl wanted a lamb, so a lamb she got. Now looking back, Brittney will agree, sheep just wasn’t her thing. After two years of showing a lamb Martin came home from a sale where his friend had told him that his kids showed what they raised. That was game over to the lamb showing and hello to steers. Brittney wanted a farm flock, Martin told her she could have one steer and her farm flock the next year. When it came time for animals to come to the house, two steers showed up and no sheep.

Showing cattle was much more natural for Brittney. She won her very first novice showmanship and then it was love, each year our numbers grew and when Brandon started to show Brittney helped Brandon with his first shorthorn steer. The two worked hard with their animals and Martin and I were so proud of them. Along with cattle Brittney and Brandon wanted to experience exhibiting other species. Brittney took on sheep, goats and cattle and Brandon exhibited goats, cattle and hogs.

We started jackpotting after family friends took us to our first show. Martin having a competitive nature, instilled that trait into our children as well. Martin and I also reminded our children to be “better losers than winners,” but always reminding our children to strive for excellence. I believe the connections you make, the forever friends, and memories we have as a family will always

by my favorite part of being a show mom. I will never forget driving up to our first show and thinking “what had we gotten into.”

After purchasing steers every year, my husband decided to purchase a few of his own cows and buy some semen from a few well-known bulls and start his own club calf business, this was the start to M&M Livestock as a club calf breeder. Our few cows quickly grew to many more, having our own bulls, and now about 150 cows including donor cows and many recips.

Our ranch sits in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley in Winton, CA. Don’t blink as you may miss our small town. We are in close proximity to larger cities with Modesto being our northern neighbor and Fresno as our southern neighbor. Now we need to break a lot of stereotypes real quick, no we don’t surf and no our neighbors aren’t celebrities. The closest thing to surfing we get is my husband’s Hawaiian shirts he wears to the sale barns and the only celebrities around here take mug shots.

So what does it mean to really be a “show mom,” a question I have been asked countless times. Being a show mom is spending early mornings and late nights in the cooler working hair for state fair, its going to dollar tree and buying their entire supply of dish soap, with the next stop being Sally’s to pick up about 30 boxes of black dye. Being a show mom means picking up the pieces after your young children have to say goodbye to their beloved market animals, then rejoice when that same child receives their check. Most of all being a show mom is showing the dedicated love and devotion in and out of the barn to your family. Being a show mom are the moments you won’t forget, and the memories you will always treasure.

My show mom days started out rocky. I had to be a self-learner, when my husband had to stay home to care for our animals during calving or go to a sale, I was the one in charge.

Now remember this “wanna be” city girl turned “country girl,” wasn’t familiar with pulling a gooseneck or really even driving a truck. My first solo adventure included the dually and our 24 foot trailer. I always tried to get to shows first, as to not create a spectacle of myself, and, God forbid, I wouldn’t have to back up! I had to learn to maneuver our stock trailer, pack a trailer, wash, blow, do entries, register cattle, be the cool box guru, the whole nine yards! We had lots of laughs, tears, pitchfork throwing, broom beating (don’t judge), and the BEST family bonding!

I so miss the early years of showing. Of course when our old 4-H leader was done, guess who took over, me! I relinquished my title as Beef leader of our local 4-H group about two years ago but still stay active on our local Merced-Mariposa Cattlemen’s Association by being an active member of our Beef Bred Heifer committee. On the committee my husband and I help 4-H and FFA kids get commercial heifers for our county fair. Along with finding kids animals we also hold a few small showmanship lessons out at our ranch. I am now back to teaching and also serving on our local Farm Bureau Board of Directors. I love advocating for agriculture any chance I get. Educate, educate are words I live by.

Although my days of my own children being in the show ring have ended, I have had the privilege of becoming “Mama Stac” to many kids here in California. My duties have changed drastically from the days of little sleep, to now being able to be more of a support system for the younger kids who show our animals. I traded in my pitchfork, black paint, and water buckets for my cuter outfits that won’t require stain removal, fun times, and for those of you who know me, my headband love affair instead of ball caps.

I am truly blessed to be able to be a show mom. Although I may not be the showman in the ring, being supportive also goes a long way in the eyes of a child. I get the biggest joys from seeing kids succeed at their dreams and bettering themselves through exhibiting livestock. It is crazy to think that no matter what we think as individuals will be most beneficial for ourselves, sometimes doesn’t always align with God’s plan. There is no doubt or regret in my mind that the path my life has taken has been anything but amazing. I have seen so many successes while in my show mom days and I wouldn’t trade a single moment for anything. Show moms across the country can probably agree with me that through all the craziness, being able to live life alongside of our children is the greatest feeling in the world. ▪ SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 41

KIRK STIERWALT DISCUSSES WEANING NUTRITION, HALTER BREAKING AND PEN TRAINING YOUR NEW CALF.

GETTING CALVES STARTED RIGHT There are many steps to take when getting your calves started.

All calves are different and some may take to things more quickly while others may require a little bit more work. Although there a lot of things to consider when starting a calf, here are some tips on weaning nutrition, halter breaking and pen training we like to do at our farm that my help you at yours:

Weaning Nutrition

• All of our calves are weaned on Purina® Precon® Starter Complete because it is high in fiber and is medicated to help with the stress of weaning.

• After weaning we start blending the Precon® with Honor® Show Chow® Fitter’s Edge® or Full Range™ to start getting them moved over to a show feed ration.

• Our calves are on all the full grass hey they want.

• We also put a stress lick tub and salt block in with our calves because they seem to migrate to these during weaning.

Weaver Leather Livestock’s Breaking Halter with special hardware that allows for quicker pressure-andrelease action.

• We use only Cydectin® wormer every three months. We’ve found that this particular wormer gives us the best results and is the most forgiving on the hair and hide.

• All of our calves get their follow-up booster shots as well as a shot of MULTIMIN® 90 to help with stress and to boost their immune system.

Halter Breaking

• As we introduce a halter, we like to leave a regular rope halter on each calf for a couple of days in the pasture to let them drag the lead around. When they step on the rope, they have to figure out how to undo the situation which is the first step in getting them to understand pressure and reward.

• We begin halter breaking either during weaning or right after. Our go-to halter is the Weaver Leather Livestock Breaking Halter because of the special hardware that allows for quicker pressure-and-release action.

• The Weaver Leather Livestock Breaking Halter is especially handy when tying out because it offers a quicker reward as the calf learns not to pull back.

• We only tie our calves nose-high during the first few tying sessions until they give in, then we start moving it up until we eventually get to show height.

• If we have calves that like to pull back a lot, we tie them as long as possible because they don’t tend to pull if they’ve got more space. We also like to tie these calves a little higher so they don’t step on the rope as they come forward.

Pen Training

• We like to put the calves (with no halter) in a small pen and broom them. By gently touching the calves with a broom in a space where they can’t get away, they eventually give up and get used to the contact.

• When it comes to washing and blowing, we like to do this in an enclosed space at the wash rack as well. The calves become tired of trying to get away from the hose and blower and eventually become more responsive to these stimuli.

• Pen brooming and pen washing/blowing are key to getting calves gentled down without traumatizing them. All the brushing, combing, blowing and washing compliments the breaking process.

FOLLOWING IN HIS FAMILY’S FOOTSTEPS WHILE MAKING HIS OWN ALONG THE WAY.

i my name is Cole Wilcox. I’m the son of John and Trisha Wilcox and brother to Kate Wilcox. I am 16 years old and a sophomore at Bedford North Lawrence High School. I live in the little town of Bedford in Southern Indiana. My hobbies are showing pigs and calves and hanging out with friends.

Showing calves has been in my blood ever since I was born. I was leading calves around more or less ever since I could walk.

Both my mom and dad were ten year 4-hers who showed very competitively. In fact, my dad won the Indiana State Fair in 1986.

He and his sister April were Grand and Reserve at the Indiana State Fair that year.

Showing is a huge family tradition. My sister Kate won the State Fair in 2005 and 2007. She also won the American Royal steer show in 2004.

Like my family I have had a lot of success in the show ring - not only with calves but also with pigs. I exhibited the Grand Champion Steer in 2012 and 2014 and the Grand Champion Barrow in 2013. I also showed the 4th Overall Gilt at the 2014 State Fair, the Reserve Overall Barrow at National Western Livestock Stock show 2014, and was 4th overall at the 2014 NJSA Summer Spectacular. Though we have had much success over the years, the success has been a rewarded of hard work and dedication. It’s not just me that does all of the work, but the whole family that comes together.

In 1993 my Aunt April Wilcox passed away in a car accident.

That had a huge impact on my family and was a huge obstacle they had to

overcome. Though I was not born yet so I never got to physically meet her, I have heard of many hilarious stories about her and how great of a person she was. I believe that every time I walk in the show ring with not only calves but also pigs that she is always watching over me every step I take.

As many of you may know, showing pigs has not always been in my family.

I started showing pigs 3 years ago. The man that has got me to where I am today in the pig show ring is Travis Platt. It all started out with that one call when I told him I wanted some jackpot pigs. That year I had Champion High Point Duroc Gilt in the Indiana Junior Swine Circuit and from then on I knew I was hooked. He has been behind me ever since then. The next year I bought all of my hogs from him and I was Champion Overall High Point Exhibiter in 2013, 2014 and Grand

Champion Barrow at the Indiana State Fair. Though I have took on something that is kind of an outcast considering my family has only showed cattle, I want to thank them all for supporting me.

One of my favorite times of the year is January through July - which means open shows and lots of them. Everything from freezing your fingers and toes off to about to die of a heat stroke when showing pigs in the summer. Though showing every weekend means you are never home, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way; because while I’m gone I’m making friends and memories that will last forever. Some of the funniest memories ever made would probably be during the swine circuit time, because I go every weekend with some of my two best friends Ian Flynn and Jayden Lackey. Some of the stories probably shouldn’t be shared.

Like I’ve preached over and over, none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for all the people supporting me. I would like to thank the Brandon Jones Family and Caldwell Family and crew for always helping me at all the open shows and getting the calves ready.

Also I would like to thank Travis and Adrienne Platt and Austin Thompson for always helping me out whenever I needed help and always standing behind me on everything I do. Last but not least my family. My Mom and Dad for helping me with anything I need and always funding me every weekend.

Also my Grandma and Grandpa for taking care of everything at home while we are all away. And Ian Flynn and Jayden Lackey for taking me to all the pig shows. Thanks again everyone for all the help - none of this success would be possible without you guys. ▪

For this edition I’ve been asked to give my favorite places to eat at in Kansas City and Tulsa. I am sending you a couple of my favorites from each location.

We’ve all been on the road working or showing at the various stock shows across the nation; and it doesn’t take long for the “Fast Food Diet” to get old, leaving you craving some good ole home cooking. Naturally, my favorite is Shirley’s Kitchen in downtown Central High Oklahoma (my wife’s cooking); but that is not possible when you are in Kansas City or Tulsa at 8:00 o’clock at night and want some good fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. Or maybe a good ole hamburger and fries cooked just the way you like it and not precooked and cold when you get it to go. That’s when you start asking the local’s, “Hey, where do you go to find that hole in the wall place that’s not some chain restaurant?

A place that serves good, close to home cooking type food.” I’ve been very fortunate through the years to find what I think are places across the country that I look forward to going back to and not afraid to recommend to other people to try.

While in Kansas City, my first choice is Stroud’s North. I’ve been known to eat there five or six times in my two week stay in Kansas City during the American Royal. They have the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy that I have found on the road; but the menu doesn’t stop there - that’s just the beginning of the Stroud’s Experience. The steaks, pork chops, chicken fried steak, chicken livers and maybe the best shrimp I’ve stumbled across; and don’t forget the fresh cinnamon rolls served with every meal! My favorite Mexican restaurant in Kansas City is Manny’s on the Boulevard. I have tried several dishes there from enchiladas to fajitas and have not been disappointed with Manny’s.

While in Tulsa, the old standby - go to place is Tally’s Good Food Café.

The menu at Tally’s is the standard diner type menu featuring everything from burgers to one of the best breakfast selections that I have found anywhere. The Brother’s Houligan is also at the top of the list for great food with a menu that ranges from steak, catfish, burgers, chicken livers and chicken fried steak in very liberal portions. The prices at both of these Tulsa locations are very affordable – making them my top picks to take a family or a group of show kids into and enjoy a great meal.

y name is Lacey McCurry and I am from Pueblo, Colorado. I am a 16 year old junior at Pueblo County High School. I have been showing livestock for the past eight years. I have shown hogs and goats throughout my 4-H career and absolutely love it. Showing livestock has not only become my passion but also my lifestyle. Being in the show ring is the best feeling, knowing that I have completed my project.

Throughout my career I have had

the Reserve Grand Champion at my county fair, the Reserve Champion Hampshire at the Colorado State Fair, and the Reserve Heavy Weight Goat at the Colorado State Fair! Not only do I show livestock, I also show horses. Winning the Colorado State Fair has to be the biggest achievement you could ever have. I am the first person that has ever won the state fair from my county in any of the species. Not many people realize how much time and dedication it takes to raise a livestock animal. Not just good livestock, but a Goat at the Colorado State Fair was one of the best moments. I don’t think that I

beyond the backdrop could’ve done it without my parents John and Missy McCurry, my two siblings Brady and Lindsey, and my grandparents Rose, Ginny and Al, Bill and Norma Adamson and the Bottini family. Last but not least, I want to thank the Hutto family, Glyn, Robbin, Davis and Mason and Kyle Stephans.

I don’t think that I could’ve done it without you guys. I have never had a goat that was so cocky before when he walked into the show ring. He caught everybody’s attention he knew that he was good. I have always liked this goat ever since the first time I saw him.

This had to be the best experience anybody could ever have.

BEYOND WHAT I EXPECTED GRAND CHAMPION MARKET HOG

i! My name is Cassie Chapin. I am 15 years old and live in the small town of Akron, Colorado, located in the northeast corner of the state. I have been an active member of 4-H for 8 years. I show pigs, goats, and lambs. I am a sophomore at Akron High School, and I play volleyball, basketball, and track.

This was my second year showing at the Colorado State Fair. Last year I showed one pig and placed third in my class – just one place away from making the sale.

My goal this year was to make sale with one of my pigs. I took two pigs to show. Pedro, who weighed in at 235 pounds, won his class and went on to win Reserve Champion Light Weight in the Crossbred Division. My second pig, Jorge weighed in at 272 pounds, and he won his class; then went on to win Champion Heavy Weight in the Crossbred Division, Champion Cross, and finally Grand Champion overall!

My pig was born and raised on my family’s farm of C & C Show Pigs of Akron, CO; where our family has been raising show pigs for the past five years. I picked Jorge out to show

from the time he was born. I knew I wanted to take him to State Fair.

Some of my greatest memories from this year were traveling to prospect shows around the state of Colorado with my older brother Caleb!

I feel very honored and extremely happy to have won State Fair this year!

I have worked really hard to meet my goal.

Winning is way beyond what I expected!

My favorite moment was when the judge shook my hand! It was truly the most exciting moment I have ever experienced!

am Reid Suddeth of Mineral Point, WI. I am currently a freshman at Black Hawk College - East Campus in Kewanee, IL. This summer I was honored to exhibit the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb at the Wisconsin State Fair. Having a lamb in the top two at the Wisconsin State Fair has been a goal of mine since the beginning of my show career. Getting the hand shake for Reserve Grand Champion was a

M

y name is Gretchen Simpson.

I’m from rural Alexis, Illinois.

My parents are Gary and Gina Simpson and I have an older sister named Grace. I am currently a sophomore at Black Hawk College East Campus majoring in Ag Communications. I’m also a member of the livestock judging team there.

My plans are to transfer to a University after my two years at Black Hawk and continue livestock judging.

When I started the hunt for a steer last fall it was no easy task. There were so many good options that I was having a hard time only picking one!

Just when I thought I had one picked out, Clifford came to me. He walked up right next to me and never left my side that day. I knew he was the one right then and naturally, the name just fit. Showing steers has always been a passion of mine and with this being my last year, winning Reserve Grand Champion Steer was the icing on the cake. I would like to thank Campbell Cattle Company, Dennert Club Calves, Brandon Jones and Todd Caldwell for raising this amazing steer and giving me this opportunity!

The first time I entered the Qwest Center (now the CenturyLink Center) I was blown away. It was 2003 and it was the first year in the new facility. We had traveled from Brighton, Colorado and when we arrived with our steers and lambs I couldn’t believe that I would get to show in a facilty like that.

The building was lit up with blue lights with the Omaha skyline behind it.

As we pulled in we were greeted by friendly staff and even offered donuts and coffee. As I opened the Northeast doors of the barn I was amazed at just how big the Qwest Center was. It was my first show where every animal was stalled and shown under one roof. It was truely a show of the future.

I was fortunate enough to make the sale. Taking an elevator up to the top floor with three steers was a very cool 188 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

experience. To this day it is one of my favorite experiences I had showing in 4-H. My family and I have traveled and shown at shows all over the country from Louisville to Denver, and they are all great and unique. Omaha remains my favorite. The show facility is top of the line, the superintendants and staff are friendly, there are great restaurants and hotels nearby, an outstanding rodeo and good booths and shops. I haven’t missed one show since 2003!

Omaha is definitely the one show I always look forward to all year!

n 2014, the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show will have new division classifications for all market animal species including Market Beef, Market Lamb, Market Goat and Market Swine.

Classes will be divided by gender and include classes for registered breed animals as well as crossbred classes currently offered in these species.

All market classes will be assigned by weight within each division. The champions from each division will compete for Grand Champion in each species. The total number of animals eligible for the auction will remain similar to previous years.

These enhancements to division classifications will provide additional opportunities for exhibitors and make the gender split the same for all species.

Additional information regarding the new division

classifications will be available in the 2014.

There is something about Kansas City that is different from the other major shows. Whether it is the rail road tracks, river, old viaduct or the amazing view of downtown Kansas City on a hill to the East, Kansas City is one of a kind!

Many of the best animals across the country are shown at the American Royal. It’s without a doubt one of the country’s toughest steer, lamb, hog and goat shows. While it is very competitive,

INGREDIENTS - 5 Cups All Purpose Flour -2 tsp. Baking Soda -2 tsp. Salt -2 Cups (4 sticks) butter, softened -1½ Cups Granulated Sugar -1½ Cups Packed Light Brown Sugar -2 tsp. Vanilla Extract -4 Large Eggs

PREHEAT oven to 350° F.

ackdrops and banners were not the starting line for the Hilburn family.

While they have become a familiar face in the cattle barns of Texas and at a National level, their roots date back to the cotton and peanut fields of West Texas.

After marrying in 1985, Ross and Kelli Hilburn purchased a cotton gin from Ross’s father in Denver City, Texas. He is a 5th generation Texas farmer. Over time, they have gradually bought land to build up their current holdings where they produce peanuts and cotton. In addition to harvesting the crops, in the fall they are able to use their wheat fields to graze cattle.

While the Hilburns ran both sheep and cattle on their farms, they were strictly commercial or stocker pairs of wheat and pasture cattle. It was not until their oldest son, Matthew, was in the 8th grade that they ventured out into the show cattle world. Although he was already a member of the local FFA Chapter, its members only showed small animals.

Therefore, he and his younger siblings, Nathan and Kate, started at square one.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE THROUGH HARD WORK, PEOPLE TO SUPPORT YOU AND A DREAM.

Like anything in life, in order to grow and become better, you have to be willing to listen and adapt. Matt Popelka was, and continues to be, the main influence for the Hilburn family. After starting their journey with a few wild feeder steers from the sale barn, Matt has provided them with both the cattle and knowledge to become successful in the show ring.

The livestock industry is one of the few trades that allows people to not only do business together, but allows those same individuals to become friends. Such is

the case for the Hilburns and Matt.

While Ross is not sure what initially sparked his son’s interest in show cattle, through it he has discovered an activity that is wholesome, kept trouble manageable, and surrounded his kids with individuals that would be good influences. Kelli, who is a school counselor for Denver City Schools, was extremely reluctant to let Matthew start showing and be that up close and personal with cattle. This was stemmed from her own father being a bull rider when she was a kid. Now, however, she is the main supporter of her kids with their show cattle. Matthew’s persistence has led the family to success at both the state and national level. In 2010, they exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at Arizona National. Nathan has shown division champion steers at Kansas City the past two years. At the 2013 Houston Livestock Show they exhibited the Champion Maine Steer.

And this past year they showed the Reserve Champion Shorthorn Steer at Fort Worth. Being able to lead their cattle into the rodeo arena for the grand drives of both Texas majors was a very surreal moment for their family.

After graduating from Texas Tech with both a Bachelors of Art and Science degrees, Matthew has started the grad program in Economics this fall at The University of Houston. Nathan, who is a sophomore at Texas Tech, will exhibit his last steer this year in Kansas City. And Kate, who is starting the fourth grade, continues to show cattle and will let anyone know that it is her favorite thing to do. What started out as the sparked interest of an 8th grader has led to a family activity that will un-doubtfully continue on into future generations. ▪

It’s that time of year when we all look back on the past show season and plan for the next. What should we have done differently? How can we implement those changes in our program and do better this next year that’s quickly coming at us? We all need to constantly evaluate everything we do, but be careful to not forget what this life is all about.

Trust me, I’m preaching to the choir here and this one is pointed right at this old guy. This isn’t about gold buckles, champion ribbons, or prize/ sale money. It’s about you taking the tools you learn in junior livestock and using those tools throughout your life. One of the major things I have discussed in earlier articles is the Truth is plain to people involved in the livestock industry.

The complexity we see in the world around us could NOT have happened by chance. The universe and all the life we see encounter every day requires a Creator. And if there’s a Creator that designed all of this, then He had a purpose for His design… and here’s the rub for a lot of folks…. if there is a purpose for His design then we are accountable to the Creator according to His purpose. He has a plan for your life. You can ignore that plan; you can fight against that plan; you can hide from that plan... (I’ve done all three)… but take it from me, it’s so much easier to turn it all over to Him and follow where He’s leading you.

This past week I had finished a long day on one of our projects and was back in our company apartment in Midland, Texas. My daily reading SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 233

has me in Acts and I have been struggling with some of those weeds that spring up in all of our lives and try to choke us down. I’m referring to the parable of the sower, where Jesus describes the different soils/people that receive the good news of the Gospel. You have the person that receives His Word but doesn’t understand it. Another person receives the Word but it can’t take root in their heart and they endure for a while but when they are pressed by the world they turn from the Truth.

Then there are those that hear the Word but the cares of this world choke it out. Lastly there’s the person who’s heart is ready, and when they receive the Word they understand it, it takes root, nothing can choke it out and they go on to impact many lives and bear fruit for our Lord. I’ve been struggling with weeds in my life….the cares of this world. I’ve been wondering why so many things are so hard sometimes. As I read Acts chapter 26, He answered me. Paul had been going through a lot, with both his own people the Jews and the gentiles whom he had been sent to preach the Good News. So much so that at one point they all tried to kill him. To get out of it, he told the officers who had come to arrest him, that he was a Roman and he appealed his case to Caesar. I don’t know Paul’s heart but as I read it, it seemed Paul was stuck and looking for a

quick solution to get out of this mess. I take it that he hoped they’d be shocked and let him go. But God had other plans. God wanted His Gospel preached everywhere including Rome. By putting Paul in this tight spot, and knowing what Paul would do, God opened a door into the heart of Rome that no one could have ever dreamed or planned. That’s how He does things sometimes. We are all surrounded by storms in our lives. And we beg God to deliver us from those storms. But notice what life storms do….they change us and move us. Without the storms in life we might sit in one spot and never get anything done for Him and definitely we would live an unfruitful life. This storm in Paul’s life accomplished God’s awesome purpose for Paul. Paul, just like every one of us, are to turn from our sinful and dead end (literally dead end) lives and turn to Him. He will fill us with His Living Water but it doesn’t stop there. We are to be those fountains through which He flows from us to all those around us. And once we are His fountain, He will take us everywhere He wants us to go and there is no more great meaning to life than the one He gives us.

CHANGING THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY WITH HER CLIPPERS AND DEDICATION TO DETAILS.

I

grew up on a century farm in the rolling hills of southwest Iowa near Treynor growing corn, soybeans, alfalfa, cattle and hogs. My parents are Roger and Ann Vorthmann and I have an older brother, Chad and a younger sister Erica. Today, our family operates a Limousin herd of around 50 head. In the past, our family had a commercial cowherd and used Limousin bulls. Over time we gradually sold the commercial cows and added to our purebred herd numbers.

To market our Limousin cattle, we have had a private treaty sale every September for the last 12 years. We do the majority of the work ourselves and it has been a successful way for us to market some of our cattle as well as have an open house for fellow breeders to come see our operation.

Growing up, my brother and I showed together since we are closer in age. Our first purebred heifer was purchased for my brother for a 4H project. I was 8 years old and I started showing in 4H at the age of 10 years old. I showed SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 247

breeding heifers, steers, hogs and lambs, for 1 year. Like many, we didn’t know much about showing cattle when we started. My dad did the clipping at that time and I can remember when we used to shave a straight line across the belly with a flathead clipper. I can also remember shaving a square on their butt…I guess we thought it made them look more square and thicker.

I have been to every National Jr. Limousin show since 1987 except for one year. In fact, the National Jr. Limousin show is just one of the many traditions that have evolved in our family because of our involvement in the Limousin breed.

I showed at my first National Jr. Limousin show in 1988 at Des Moines, IA. The year before we traveled to Longmont, CO to see what it was all about so we wouldn’t look like total rookies at our first Jr. National. That year I spent all but $20 in my checking account on a show heifer at the Iowa Beef Expo, her name was Amarillo. In my anxious little mind I thought I purchased a great one-- then I showed her that week and received last in my class. From that point forward I was determined to work harder than anyone else. Hard work paid off and Amarillo won her class and was Reserve Champion in her division at the Jr. National show and had lots of admirers. I was offered a nice price to sell her, but I refused. She went on to produce several successful calves. I sold a daughter in Denver for $10,000, another daughter to Minerich for $12,000 and she also produced several good herd bulls.

In 1989 I had a home raised heifer named Sugar-NSpice. She was my favorite color, dark cherry red. I was very fortunate that summer to be selected Reserve Grand Champion at the National Jr. Show in Stillwater, OK. Over the years, I have had the honor of raising and exhibiting several Bred & Owned Champions. One of my bred and owned highlights came in 1999 when I raised and showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the National Western Stock Show with VORD Halfback.

My parents have been great help and support over all the years. Early on, my mom told my brother and I “If you get up and do your chores and take care of your calves like you should, I will take you wherever you want to go.” Well, we went to 30+ shows that spring and summer in Iowa and that is when I found my love for clipping cattle.

I would find the best presented cattle and watch the clipping and fitting. Then I would go practice what I saw.

My brother went to a Stierwalt clinic one summer, he was so excited to come home and share what he had learned.

We would get random cattle in from the pasture and practice for hours and I always had the saying “practice makes perfect” in the back of my mind.

In high school, I started getting the hang of presenting show cattle. When I graduated, John Sullivan offered me a full-time position.

I was still showing Limousin cattle at that time and did not feel comfortable working on another junior’s cattle that I would be competing against (this is when Sullivan’s had Limousin). My brother and I still helped John, but it was not full-time.

In 1991, my brother Chad was helping Mike Hartman with their Llama and I think miniature donkey sale when he came across a Limousin heifer, Cookie. Cookie, in my mind, is one of the most famous Limousin cows ever. Chad bought Cookie from Mike and won reserve champion at the Junior National. Chad then sold Cookie to John Sullivan, who then bred Cookie to a bull that we would have never thought about using. That mating went on to be one of the most successful matings in Limousin history.

I then went on to work for John on a part time basis. It was very scary to me at first when I started clipping, I didn’t want to take too much hair off, especially when

I was working on someone else’s cattle. The scariest moment of my career was in Louisville when Dave Allan, who was in charge of Sullivan’s show cattle, told me that I was clipping tops and tailheads on show day. I had done everything for myself at shows, but never when I worked for someone else. I was scared to death. But it was that day in Louisville that it really made everything click. Some have many names for me, Perfectionist, Drill Sargent, Voo Doo Woman. People can say whatever they want, but I truly believe that the ability I have with a set of clippers is a God given talent. Not only do I get to share my talents to breeders around the country, I’ve had the opportunity to watch young cattlemen grow into the amazing people they are today. It’s truly an honor to hear some of them say that I taught them something along their journey to who they are today. Along the way, I have had many people believe in me and give me opportunities to learn. This helped to build my confidence and helped me to be who I am today.

It has taught me to always try to be better. I am constantly learning and don’t like to give up until I am pleased with my work. Some say I’m a perfectionist, I do not like that statement because I want to keep improving my work.

Over the years I have many people believe in me and have had the opportunity to work for. I have helped Sullivan’s,

Deer Valley, Hackworth’s, Andrews Land and Cattle, Carl Weathers and countless others that I have helped at shows or part time. Most of my full time employment has been with Limousin operations although I have worked on several breeds over the years. I have been from coast to coast working and showing. I have been very fortunate to have worked on several national Champions. Today, I spend a lot of time on the road traveling to and from different places and jobs. I enjoy getting to see the country and appreciate the friendships that have evolved from my cattle experiences.

In 2002 I was honored to be selected as the Limousin Herdsman of the Year at the NWSS in Denver. At that time, I was taking care of show/sale cattle for Andrews Land and Cattle from Olympia, WA and working on them in Iowa at Shane Lindsey’s place in Prairie City. I was the first female to win this prestigious award. It meant so much because there are so many industry greats to win that same award.

A lot of people ask me what my next step in life is. Yes, I still want to clip for other people, but at my age, I would like to do more for myself. I’ve always had cattle SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 249

of my own and I feel in the past, I haven’t put as much thought as I could have into my cow herd/ breeding decisions. In the past year, I have culled cows and have mated differently. I have also purchased very unique Limousin genetics that I feel can change my program for the better.

Although the Limousin breed isn’t as popular as it was 15 years ago, I still feel like they have a very important purpose in the beef industry. I see myself raising quality Limousin and Lim flex cattle which has been my passion since I was very young.

Another question I get quite often is any advice or words of wisdom to youth that wish to do what I do. To keep it short, I tell them to learn from the beginning. What I mean by that is learn how to break one correctly, wash one correctly, comb one correctly, blow one correctly, then clip and fit one correctly. I often see so many people try to do it the opposite way. I personally have more respect for the people who do the little things right rather than just be able to fit a leg or something. The number one advice I have to give is, never think you know it all, because you don’t… no one does.

And girls, it can be a bumpy ride, but don’t give up!

Some other things I do with my spare time is I am a Beef leader for my 4H club that I grew up in as a kid. It means a lot to me when I am able to work closely with the kids and families and try to help everyone learn and get better. Also, I help put on a showmanship clinic at our county fair every year. Getting to be a professor for Stock Show U has been another way I get to teach young exhibitors. I really love doing these types of things since it helps the next generation of cattlemen.

I’ve always seen myself doing what I do, but I’ve never dreamed I would be doing this as long as I have. I have always pictured myself by this day and age having a family of my own, but sometimes the good Lord has a different plan and gives you other opportunities that you wouldn’t trade for the world. One of those is being able to meet up with friends at shows across the country. I am so blessed to get to experience this and be able to make a living doing what I love. ▪ SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 251

RAISING A CHAMPION BREEDER OF THE 2012 + 2014 INDIANA STATE FAIR GRAND CHAMPION STEER

I

got a phone call a few minutes after the selection of Grand Steer at the Indiana State Fair, with a Colorado area code. I thought to myself, “Who is this?” The voice politely said, “Congrats on raising the Champion Steer. How would you like writing a short article about what it feels like to raise the Grand Steer at the Indiana State Fair?” I then realized who it was. Betty Reid from Showtimes.

My reply, “it would be an honor.” She didn’t know I would write a novel.

Deuteronomy 30:9 “The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock and in the produce of your land for good. For the lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers.”

This is my seventh State Fair animal raised. One in West Virginia. One in Ohio; that same year we also had 4th Overall. Two at the Penn State Farm Show. Three at the Indiana State Fair.

The most recent two were shown by the Wilcox Family, John, Trisha, Kate, and of course Cole. It’s an honor to be afflicted with the Wilcox’s, for them to think of my cattle to be some of the top cattle they can find. Without their hard work the outcome could be different.

Over the past several years we have sold cattle into 37 different states. I feel that’s pretty good for being a relatively small breeder of approximately 100 head of cows.

Every year we get a lot of great reports from 4-Hers on how well their steers and heifers have done; and wanting to know what I’ve got for the next year. I can’t offer the service of clipping and going to every show like I would like to. I’m kind of a One Man Show with calving, breeding, and haying. I hire part time help during sale time. But the rest is done with my brother John.

Being 60 years old I can’t go like I used to. But it’s still the most rewarding job one could ever have. I watched the Celebration of Champions at Indy this year. The young people involved in

that way very moving. Approximately 30 young junior people from Champion garden exhibit to Grand Steer got a spotlight to the stage with a short interview on two big screen TV’s. They were from age 8-18, more 8-12 than any. My wife Diane and I happened to sit very close to them in the coliseum. There was no horse play. They were all very attentive to each one’s project. These young people had their heads screwed on straight. We as adults should be very proud of the young people involved in Agriculture. My granddaughter just completed her first year as a beef exhibitor. She’s the best 10 year old bard help I’ve got. She can stick on like a pro and blow one out perfect.

She loves 4-H. I’m very proud to have her involved in 4-H.

getting pictures taken at Indy, shaking hands with people congratulating you. That makes chills run down your back. But the most satisfying was shaking hands with the fellow breeders of the Champion steers. The Reserve Grand Steer was bred and shown by the Hayden family. Brad Winegardner smiled and shook my hand – they raised the Fifth Overall Steer from a heifer that won a lot for them. These are all great families and great competitors. They know what it’s like to raise a champion.

So what’s it like to raise a State Fair Champion? Like nothing you can imagine. In Indiana we have State High School Basketball Championship. I guess winning that would be comparable. You cannot put into words, a paragraph, or a book on the feeling. Great? Wonderful? Yes, of course, but the actual emotion of raising a champion is indescribable.

One person I have to thank is my wife Diane. She has such a strong faith.

Without being able to lean on her faith, we would not be anything. She is there for me through it all and is without question the cornerstone of our family.

The real thrill of it was standing in line

One of the keys to raising good cattle is surrounding yourself with good, honest, Christian people. Hard work, good friends, and a desire to succeed will get you much further than trends and fads.

There is a lot of sweat and a lot of tears in the cattle business; and you need them both to be a truly great cattleman. ▪
