ANOTHER GREAT YEAR IS COMING TO A CLOSE

T

he November/December 2014 Year End Edition marks the final issue of the year. It seems like we have gone so hard the past few months we haven't had time to take a breath. We are thankful to have been able to travel and cover Ak-SarBen and the American Royal like never before. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at both shows!

We are humbled and blessed to share your lives in each issue. The biggest part of The Showtimes is capturing the people of our industry. Take time to watch our Kansas City Show Center video to watch the Kroupa and Reimann families reflect on Nick's life. Stories like this are an example of how life is more than just cattle shows. We truly enjoy capturing the many moments with families and friends. With every issue and every show we meet more great people and

BLACKOUT JACKPOT 3 ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 We are excited to announce the Blackout Jackpot 3! The Showtimes Magazine's steer and heifer jackpot returns March 20-22, 2015 at The Ranch in Loveland, Colorado. It will once again be held with the CSU Green and Gold Showdown. This will be a 2 ring show (Green and Gold Ring and Blackout Ring) with the heifers showing on Saturday and the steers showing on Sunday. Brad Winegardner, OH will judge the heifer show and Matt Leo, CA will sort the steers. Be sure to look for our ad in the November/December issue of The Showtimes. More information will be announced in our January/February issue. We look forward to working with Shane Bedwell and CSU on this big jackpot weekend!

BOTH BLACKOUT STEERS WIN AMERICAN ROYAL The Blackout Jackpot has been held two times.

The first show was in 2012. In 2014 we decided to bring the show back and had the Blackout Jackpot 2. The Grand Champion Steer from the Blackout Jackpot, shown by Kayla Morrow, went on to win the American Royal in 2012 for Baylor Bonham! This past October, Bayley Kroupa's steer that was Grand Champion this spring at our show was selected Grand Champion in Kansas City! That makes the Blackout Jackpot two for two! TYLER HUMPHREY SAYS FAREWELL TO THE AMERICAN CHIANINA ASSOCIATION The American Chianina Association (ACA) would like to thank Tyler Humphrey, Director of Marketing & Performance Programs for his almost 4 years of service. Tyler has resigned from his position at the ACA with his last day being October 10, 2014. Tyler has taken a position with Jones Show Cattle of Ohio and will be working as their Director of Marketing & Customer Relations. The ACA genuinely appreciates Tyler’s efforts in growing the Chianina breed and helping with the ACA sponsored shows and sales. We wish him best of luck with his new venture.

NEW MEMBER MARGARET DUPREY’S LOVE FOR CATTLE AND JUNIORS HAS LED CHERRY KNOLL FARM GENETICS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT.

C

herry Knoll Farm is a name synonymous with quality. The Black Angus cattle operation, located just outside of Philadelphia, PA, defies the law of averages.

It operates with only 50 head of cattle, yet accumulates winning titles across the nation against contenders who have ten times the number of cattle.

In 1989, Margaret and Bob Duprey moved Cherry Knoll Farm to its current location in West Grove, Pa. At that time, Margaret’s passion was focused on high performance dressage horses; nevertheless, fate has a wonderful way of fulfilling wishes. Margaret’s childhood dream was to own a farm and Brian Fitzgerald joined the team as the Cherry Knoll Farm manager. In 1993, Margaret’s focus expanded to include Angus cattle..

“She always wanted to be like Old MacDonald,” husband, Bob laughed.

“Margaret’s passion is evident in everything she does, and with the Black Angus cattle, it is no different.”

Brian, Margaret and Bob began to cultivate the herd and, shortly, Cherry Knoll owned a nationally respected herd that turned heads in the livestock industry. Following a nine-year tenure, Brian passed the baton to his brother, Tim Fitzgerald, who currently curates the prize-winning herd and manages all the cattle breeding and operations of Cherry Knoll Farm.

The Fitzgerald’s roots run deep in the Angus breed. Tim was raised in western Nebraska in an Angus family on a nationally prominent Angus ranch. He came up through the ranks of the renowned National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) program, and holds a B.S. degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University where he was a member of the 1989 National Champion intercollegiate livestock judging team. During his career, Tim has judged numerous beef cattle shows of almost every breed at all levels of competition.

Margaret recalled the conversation with Tim that would become the foundation for Cherry Knoll Farm’s cattle operation for the next two decades. “I explained to Tim that we only had this much land which prevented us from accommodating the large herd that he’d been used to while working in West Virginia. We had to keep the herd manageable — so we should focus on quality not quantity. This is how we developed the cattle we have.”

Cherry Knoll Farm is operated on that philosophy, and the personal attention to detail is the secret to the great success it enjoys in its breeding Angus cattle that are competitive on the national level.

Cherry Knoll cattle are bred to fit a variety of programs, with a primary focus on high profile genetics, proven cow families, and the elite sires of the breed. Cherry Knoll Farm’s clientele include Angus breeders, National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), 4-H and FFA exhibitors, as well as commercial producers seeking the added benefits of utilizing advanced, contemporary Angus genetics. The Cherry Knoll breeding program strives to exceed the goals of its customers and is recognized for its unique ability to raise cattle appropriate to all of these markets.

The Dupreys are passionate supporters of the NJAA. The Dupreys sponsor various Angus events, as

well as sell their cattle to many of the juniors during their annual Fall Sale.

“We support the NJAA because the children are the future of the Angus industry, the future of America and the future of the world,” Margaret said.

It is the exemplary breeding program that made Cherry Knoll Farm the winning choice for the NJAA Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference venue. The LEAD field trip to Cherry Knoll Farm included more than 150 juniors from across the country and Canada.

In addition to touring the farm, the juniors were able to spend time with the Dupreys, Tim and the cattle during the 2014 LEAD Conference, themed Forefathers & Farmers: Cultivating Angus Youth.

The participants took careful notes and read the tags of the calves, asking questions and preparing for the October sale.

Tim shared his vast knowledge with the participants. He described the day-to-day operations of Cherry Knoll Farm, their breeding philosophy and strategy, as well as the rising concerns the economy forces breeders

to confront. He acknowledged that Cherry Knoll Farm is an exceptional facility and credited the success of the operation to Margaret and Bob’s philosophy, vision and generosity.

“I really wanted to show the kids that you can work for beautiful people, in a beautiful place and give back to the community,” Tim said. “Cherry Knoll Farm is a special place, and we were thrilled to host the NJAA. We have the greatest set of babies ever raised, and it is our philosophy of quality over quantity that has allowed us to succeed. It was important for these kids to understand that bigger isn’t always better. The truth is ‘better is better’. So, you don’t need 3,000 head of cattle to compete against the big guys.”

Tim continued, “I think it was wonderful for the kids to meet Margaret and Bob. Probably some of the kids were surprised about how approachable and real Margaret and Bob are. Margaret is so much more than an owner… she is a supporter, she is a mentor, she is there at the in-gate, and she even helps to breed animals that get this close to perfect.”

line of communication for members of different associations to share ideas, exchange plans and establish goals. Each year, the participating juniors collectively choose a highlight location to visit, and Cherry Knoll Farm was at the top of the list for 2014.

“Although we do not have children of our own, Bob and I feel it is vitally important to support younger generations. We know education plays a very important part in the future, and we do what we can to help out as much as possible,” Margaret said.

In 2007, Cherry Knoll Farm clinched the Grand Champion Heifer and Grand Champion Bull during the National Western Stock Show, a nearly impossible feat. Many of the winning heifers and bulls are offspring from the Cherry Knoll stock, including some of the greatest made females to ever enter a show ring, such as Cherry Knoll LSC Rosebud, Cherry Knoll Elsa and Freys Arkpride of Cherry Knoll.

in determining what pairing will produce the best offspring. “You are never going to have the ‘perfect’ cow, but you can sure get close.

When breeding an animal, my main objective is to have that cow produce a better animal than what she is. It’s a game. There is not just one bull out there that will fix everything; it is all trial and error. We try to breed that perfect one, that is what you try to do, and our results show just how close we get.”

Although Cherry Knoll Farm is not set amongst hills with cherry trees, the name encompasses the history of Margaret’s extensive roots in the equestrian industry.

The original Cherry Knoll Farm was located in Newtown Square, and rivaled President Madison’s home, Montpelier, where owner Mrs. Jean Liseter Austin duPont’s husband, William, had grown up. The house duplicated everything about Montpelier, down to the woodwork on the interior. Cherry Knoll Farm became well known for their cattle and horses. Much later, Margaret rode at the farm and fell in love with its atmosphere and name.

Mrs. duPont’s sister, Miss Anna A. Austin, allowed Margaret to keep the

name when she began her own facility in the West Grove location. Mrs. duPont was a dedicated horsewoman who rode, showed and bred horses for most of her life—she was a fixture at horse shows across the country.

Similar to Mrs. duPont, Margaret’s equestrian interests were nurtured early in life. She was a little girl who fell in love with a pony, and her passion only grew. She owns some of the most competitive high performance Grand Prix dressage and show jumpers in the world. Margaret, herself, trains with International Dressage rider, Todd Flettrich, in pursuit of her dreams of one day competing on an international scale, as both an owner and rider.

Flettrich earned a spot as the alternate on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Dressage Team only two years after competing at the prestigious World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky. Margaret admitted that she sees much of herself in Flettrich—filled with a competitive and ambitious spirit. Flettrich has ridden Amadeus and Otto at international dressage competitions, going head-to-head with the best in the world.

Cedric, ridden by Olympic Champion Laura Kraut, qualified for the 2008 Olympics, and helped bring home the Team Gold for the United States of America. Cedric continues to prove himself a superior equine athlete in show rings around the world, capturing four prestigious Longines Global Champions Tour (GCT) Grand Prix wins and finishing in the third place for the 2013 GCT Leading Rider Championship. Kraut believes he is one of the “best athletes in the world.” Margaret is also a shareholder in the Stars and Stripes syndicate that owns Andretti S, one of Kraut’s most

competitive mounts. He was unveiled in 2014 during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., and will one day fill Cedric’s position as her top international competitor.

Her dedication to the equestrian disciplines extends much farther than dressage and show jumping. Duprey is also a significant proponent of para-dressage, a growing sport in the United States. Paralympian Rebecca Hart and her own Schroeters Romani, owned in conjunction with Cherry Knoll Farm, quickly became an unstoppable partnership since the fall. They led the Grade II para-dressage ranks in the United States, and closed out the para-dressage competition during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 with solid scores and an outstanding freestyle debut, which Margaret was on-site to watch.

S

ometimes we think about the one that is showing and talk about the job they have done, but what about everybody else that was involved in creating a successful project. Showing livestock is more of a team sport than you may think. Can you imagine a football team without a quarterback, baseball team without a pitcher, or soccer team without a goalie? All of which would only be on a one way course to putting a mark in the lose column, setting everything up for failure, and ultimately disappointment to everybody. But I compare showing livestock to car racing. There is a placing at the end of the race like a class or top five at the show, sometimes we run into the wall and crash so we go home, regroup, and get better for the next show or sometimes the next year. Every year

we show, we set our goals higher and higher. Like starting at the small local tracks, and working our way up the ranks to the dream tracks like Dayton, Talladega, Indy, or the likes of NWSS, NAILE, or the American Royal for examples. Lastly and probably the most like racing, most of the attention goes on the driver or in this case the showman. At the end of the race they interview the driver, they put his name in lights, and the check is written to him. We on the outside, talk about the HIS driving skills and the job HE had done. Now don't get me wrong we have to have a driver but let's talk about the rest of the team.

They have to have an owner that is willing to put his faith into a team and a facility in order to produce these cars. There's the crew chief that plays as the coach and makes the decisions on when to pit, how many tires, and if they need to make any adjustments.

There's a mechanic, that builds these motors to preform at the highest level in extreme conditions. There's the tire changers which have to be quick about there work and have every lug nut on straight and tight. We have to

have a driver that does his best to get to the front of the line without hitting the wall. But then there is the gasman.

The gasman is the guy that is the last over the wall, doesn't have to be the fastest on the team, he puts the hose in the tank and when the can is empty he pulls it out and the car takes off. As long as he get the gas in the car and don't trip up the guys working around him, his job is fairly simple. BUT is it less important? Last, I know it's pretty hard to get around the track without gas, so yes, his job is just as important.

If you sit down and think about it, showing is a lot the same. We need support from mom, dad, grandpa, or grandma to buy us a car, (calf, pig, lamb, etc) and as time goes on working our way up the ranks at the smaller tracks (county or local shows) and the more they believe in the team, the better the car they will try to build.

We need breeders to build us motors, and the better motors or livestock we can breed, the better we do and more we can race. We have to have a crew chief like the person we bought the project from, or some type of mentor that acts as a coach that gives the team

a direction and guidance of feeding, fitting and daily care. They help in making the decisions on a day to day, week to week, and month to month to build a championship result. We need tire changers that can help with clipping, fitting, and other show day preparations. The gasman you may ask... well that's the guy that makes sure the show halter is on and the showman is there in a presentable look to race because usually the showman (driver) has been down in the trenches working, and needs to get into his fire suit. And last but not least, we need a driver. One that goes out into the ring and presents the completed project that everybody has worked for, and hopefully keeps it out of the wall. LOL!!! That can be frustrating sometimes but it happens.

But at the end of the day, everybody on the team has to do their part and put in their time at the shop (barn) to make it all work.

At our place, Luc and I are the support, Chad is the crew chief, Luc is the mechanic. We have lots of tire changers and gasmen that have helped

us out over the years. I'm the coach and they tell me some coaches coach harder than others, and Ashtin and Nalaney are the drivers. Now even though we have our strong points, if we all work together as a team, I will promise that it does put you on a path toward success. Don't go to battle without a complete team.

Don't let good enough be enough. So my challenge today is for you to put a team around you that spells success.

Look at your project as a team effort and if you are ever lucky enough to win a race, don't forget the team behind you, because you need every piece of the puzzle to put together a winning combination.

Always remember there are many feed choices out there, but I will encourage you to give ShowRite Feeds a chance.

DEC. 5 - 7 / MADISON, WI UW-Saddle and Sirloin makes changes to 2014 Badger Kick-Off Classic Mackenzie Cash, General Chair for the 2014 Badger Kick-Off Classic, announces that the show will be held at a new location, the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI. Madison, WI (August 5, 2014)- The 2014 Badger Kick-Off Classic will be the 20th show hosted by UW-Saddle and Sirloin. The first show was held at the Stock Pavilion on campus in Madison with around 50 head of cattle. Within a few years the show had caught on so well that the Pavilion no longer was a large enough facility. This is when the move was made to the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, WI, originally needing only one barn on site to stall cattle.

With the growth in entries over the last 10 years, Saddle and Sirloin has had to increase stalling areas branching out into the double deck barn-first just the lower level and then even filling the upper deck as well. With Alliant Energy Center’s announcement of the New Holland Pavilions construction project, came a decision for the 2014 General Chair, Mackenzie Cash, and General Co-Chair,

Alexus Butler. Contract negotiations began in April 2014 and an agreement was reached a few weeks later. The 2014-2016 shows will be held at the Alliant Energy Center in the New Holland Pavilions. 2014 dates are December 5th-7th. In 2015 the dates will be December 4th-6th, 2015. 2016 dates will be December 2nd-4th, 2016.

Pavilion 1, which is 90,000 square feet, will host two show rings, a food court with eating area, an expanded trade show, and heated wash racks. Pavilion 2, which can hold 1800 head of cattle, will be the site of all the cattle stalling. This over doubles the space of cattle stalling for exhibitors. Pavilion 2 also offers easy access for unloading and loading at arrival and departure and easy trailer parking near the facilities. There will also be free parking on grounds.

Hoosier Beef Congress 2014 Update There will be a Shorthorn-Plus steer division at the 2014 HBC. The Shorthorn Association and breed managers brought forth a written proposal to add Shorthorn-Plus steers to the list of breed classes offered and the committee accepted their proposal.

Also new this year, Walton Webcasting will be handling the live online streaming of the show.

They have been working with a large number of swine shows over the last couple of years and promise to offer a new look for the online streaming of the HBC. There are sponsorship opportunities available during this web feed, as well as other sponsorship opportunities available for the show itself. Please contact the IBCA office if you are interested in being a sponsor of the 2014 HBC. The biggest change this year is the new trailer parking protocol. Due to the limited availability of space for trailer parking and an inefficient utilization of that space in the past, the Indiana State Fair will be working to get trailers parked in an efficient manner. Hopefully, these changes will help make everyone’s entry and exit from the event go much more smoothly.

There will be a stalling auction again this year during the week prior to HBC. The auction will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday November, 25th and will end at 8:00 p.m. on November 25th. All times are Eastern Standard Time. Interested bidders can access the auction at Willoughby Livestock Sales.

Recent government statistics estimate that Arizona agriculture is over a $12.4 billion industry. The Show’s founders knew the importance of agriculture when they held their organizational meeting, but surely they had no idea the 1948 Phoenix Stock Show would evolve into one of the largest livestock events in the Southwest.

The Phoenix Stock Show debuted Dec. 14, 1948 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds under the direction of Dr. E.L. Scott of the Suncrest Hereford Ranch.

The first show attracted 449 Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn cattle, with 42 exhibitors from five states.

The estimated attendance was 6,552 people.

ompetitive? Webster’s Dictionary defines this adjective as, “to have the strong desire to be the best at something while competing successfully against others.” I fully believe that when someone is born they begin with a blank slate-- the people around you along with the experiences you have define what kind of person you will be and the traits you will possess. Competitiveness is just one of those traits, and one that is certainly ever present within those who raise and exhibit livestock. Although the friends and experiences you obtain are incredible, in the end, there is still that little (or big) desire in all of us to try and come out on top. More personally, I discovered that growing up with two sisters meant that my competitiveness began at home!

Before I was competitive against anyone else within the cattle industry, I was competitive with my sisters. For the longest time, it didn’t matter where I placed as long as it was one spot higher than them. I know I’m not the only one who has felt this way. For all those reading this right now, think back to that time when you were ages 5-12 and in the ring with a sibling of yours. How important was it for you to not only win your class, but to also beat your brother/sister in the process?

What if you were lucky enough to show against your sibling in showmanship? Winning showmanship over a sibling (which, sadly, I never accomplished against my sisters) was like winning the Super Bowl, with the celebration being the entire drive home. To the parents reading this, I ask how many times had you set out to buy cattle of completely different age ranges, or even breeds, in an attempt to avoid sibling rivalries? My parents would try to trade off year by year which child would get the “good one” in order to make it fair. This strategy never seemed to work out as planned. However, looking back, it was

those childhood barn rivalries with my siblings that shaped me into who I am, all while elevating our program to where it is today. With both my sisters’ birthdays being close to the release of this issue, I decided to surprise them with a more sentimental approach to our relationship, while still informing readers about our operation. They always said it would be cool for our family to be in this magazine someday.

Well Madison and Morgan, here it is.

First, here’s a little background on our program. Shuey Stock Farms, Inc. was started in 1887 when my great-great grandfather purchased the original 160 acres of prairie in southeast Nebraska. The original land is still used to pasture cattle, but the type and scope of the operation has changed drastically.

Six children, the offspring of Willis and Erma Shuey, were put through college in the 1950’s and 1960’s on that original 160 acres and another 80 acres that was added prior to the Great Depression. At that time, the family milked Jersey cows and ran stockers. After the last child entered college, the milk cows were sold and the operation was enlarged to not only include stockers but 200 to 300 head of finishing cattle. In 1974, my grandfather, Keith Shuey, took over management of the operation and introduced some of the first purebred Simmental cattle in the state of Nebraska. However, they were not the typical Simmental cattle seen at today’s shows. They were big red and white females, with enough leg and lack of depth that you could almost walk under them. You don’t hear too many judging coaches preaching “when in doubt, frame ‘em out” today, but that was what the industry wanted at the time. This was also the time when my father and his sisters

started to exhibit cattle at the state and national level. In addition, my father served as the National Junior Simmental Association Board President. And true to tradition, sibling rivalries were a common problem among those three as well.

Every year at Christmas, stories are told as to who beat whom in the show ring or who always left the gate open letting the cows out. They had lots of success through the years at such shows as the National Western, the American Royal, the Nebraska State Fair, the Breeders Sweepstakes and the NAILE. The operation continued raising and selling purebred Simmental cattle and, in 1985, Red Angus were added to the herd.

When the youngest child of the new generation graduated from college, the operation evolved again. The emphasis transitioned from raising and showing purebred animals to developing a more commercial cow herd.

Fast forward a few more years, which saw the graduation of my father from Veterinary school at KSU and the

birth of Madison, Morgan, and me. By then, our family had settled in our current location in Corning, IA with the purchase of land. For nearly 20 years, we ran approximately 180 head of cattle. The goal was set to expand to 300 head and eventually expansion plans were made even beyond that.

Currently, the herd consists of just over 450 head of cattle: approximately 50 head of pure-bred Red Angus and Simmentals and 400 head of Red Angus, Simmental and South Devon cross commercial cows. Madison and I entered the operation with our first Red Angus show heifers in 2004.

At that time, the size of our crossbred herd required us to purchase 4-5 bulls a year to keep up with the expansion. Our family saw the purchasing of show heifers as a way to hopefully one day raise functional bulls out of these females to cover some of those purchases.

One of Madison’s very first Red Angus show heifers was named Kit after the American Girl doll.

Considering that Madison and I were still very new to showing cattle, we did very well. The best thing my father did for us prior to our first show was to sit in a lawn chair in our front yard and say, “Okay, you two, get her ready.” Kit stood 2nd in class at most of her shows, including second out of 24 at the National Open show and second in class at Denver. That was the same year that my parents made a major mistake purchasing two females of the same age. While Madison was enjoying all her success, I was the jealous older brother much further down the line with my own heifer. Following multiple fights over why she got the good one when I supposedly worked harder, my parents made yet another crucial mistake by saying, “We’ll buy you the good one next year.” Holding them to their word, I got the “good one” the next year while Madison got the cheap, cute little May heifer.

You can only guess which one was winning all the shows by the end of the year while I was breaking down in the stalls. Sibling rivalry had hit its peak.

The next year was finally my year.

I had a calf named Fergie and she was “The One”. Finally, I was able to beat Madison at every show we attended. This was also our family’s big return to the national stage, as Fergie went on to be Reserve Overall at the NAILE and then the 2008 National Champion Female. Even better, the biggest accomplishment of 2008 was winning our first National Gridmaster award for carcass quality from the Red Angus Association. We began collecting carcass data on our commercial cattle in 1995. That year, the steers we fed were mainly born in February, were harvested in July and graded approximately 50% choice and prime. By 2008 we had changed our approach. The calves were now born in March, harvested in June and yielded over 90% choice and prime.

Our 2014 expectations are to have a

13 month old calf weigh 1300 pounds and grade at least 85% choice with little or no creep feed. We were the very first, and to this date only, Red Angus breeder to ever win both a Gridmaster award for carcass quality and exhibit a National Champion.

It’s very tough to find a balance between the show and commercial industries . The fact that our family was able to achieve this was very rewarding. The commercial herd isn’t always the most visible aspect of our herd, but it is what pays the hotel and feed bills to do the hobby that we love. Focusing on things such as carcass quality, calving ease EPD’s, ability to wean off at the highest weight, and efficiency became greater priorities than pretty fronts, moderate frames, and hair.

Cattle are still sold by the pound and that is what our industry needs to survive and thrive, especially with the need to feed the growing world population.

Today, our family continues to show Red Angus cattle, but with a different approach. Cow/calf pairs are now our go-to exhibit at shows in order to demonstrate the strength of our production.

Additionally, with the expansion of our commercial operation to over 450 cows my sisters and I finally began to understand the long-term goals of the operation. Yes, winning at a national level is fun. But now the most important experience is more all-inclusive: raising the females ourselves instead of purchasing them, then continuing to the next step of having them recognized as cows to raise functional bulls for the commercial industry. The growth of our operation also came with a lot of work needed to be done around home. Thankfully, we have one of the best herd managers in the nation Wade Ludeman who has been with us for 14 years. Our commercial herd would be nothing without him.

Considering Madison’s and my heavy involvement in the cattle industry, it was hard to recognize that our youngest sibling did not originally share the same interest. Morgan, having received her first offer to play college basketball in the 8th grade, is probably the best female athlete that I have ever known. When she made the decision to pursue those activities over participating in the family cattle business, it was hard for me to accept. While Madison and I were out in the barn working, she was shooting hoops. While we were shaking the judges’ hands, she was setting meet records in the high jump. We definitely had our fair share of arguments; but, in the end, she is still my sister and I’m her biggest fan.

True, having the competitive brother in the stands yelling at basketball games sometimes embarrasses her, but I know she wouldn’t have it any other way. After showing her that I supported her in her activities, she actually began showing a strong interest in the cattle operation again.

All of this led up to last year, which was probably the most successful year in our operation’s history and the closest I have ever been to my sisters.

In 2013, our purebred herd had

finally reached the point where we were raising enough excess of bulls to justify having a bull sale. We offered 24 bulls and 75 commercial open replacements on our first sale, and it was amazing to see the support my sisters and I had throughout the whole process. The cattle sold because of the success of our previous commercial heifers that others had purchased and because of the reputation of our commercial cow herd with its now 3 National Gridmaster awards. Our 2014 sale was even more successful.

The industry’s recognition of us as breeders of functional Red Angus cattle that will thrive in a commercial setting for others as it had for us was present and very humbling. In 2013, we also accomplished one of our biggest family goals-- to win the Iowa State Fair with a female that we raised.

The Iowa State Fair was the first “big” show at which my sisters and I had ever exhibited, but also one where we had never had Supreme Champion until then. The congratulations from the Iowa breeders, who had become like a second family watching my sisters and I grow up, were overwhelming and much appreciated.

Of the 12 animals that we showed at state and national shows in 2013 and 2014, only two were purchased. The

My proudest moment as a brother came when Madison and Morgan exhibited the National Champion and Reserve National Champion Bred & Owned Females at the 2014 Fort Worth Stock Show. It was an incredible moment to hear the judge’s surprise that he had chosen two sisters for the titles. This was the first time a family had ever won both titles in the Red Angus breed, and we had been the ones to do it. If this had occurred a few years prior, I probably would have been jealous. This time, I was standing ringside watching my sisters exhibit National Champions with cattle that we had raised together-- definitely a worthwhile memory. Showing cattle is truly a family affair and we had accomplished those goals together.

We didn’t accomplish all of these alone though. We couldn’t have done it without some of our best friends like Dan, Cheryl and Cassie Johnson, Jordan Cowin, Deb Vorthmann, Derek Oetkin, Logan Potter, and of course, our herd manager Wade Ludemann. We wouldn’t have enjoyed our success without you guys.

So where do we go from here?

Probably my biggest goal for myself is to graduate Veterinary school at Iowa State while beating my father’s GPA (not going to happen). I would also like to continue my involvement with the North American Junior Red Angus Association (NAJRAE).

Following my father’s lead not only in being a veterinarian but also in serving on a National Junior Breed Board, I served on the NAJRAE board a few years ago and would, someday, like to join the adult board.

My family, along with the Johnson family, was the original organizers of the NAJRAE. To see it grow from 16 juniors exhibiting 26 head of cattle to 200 juniors exhibiting almost 500 head in just 8 years is amazing, and something I very much want to continue supporting. As for my

sisters, Madison will graduate from Iowa State in Animal Science and join a cattle operation looking for a manager who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty while Morgan will continue to excel in every sport offered and continue to beat her brother in one-on-on. As for the cattle operation, we are currently developing our next big goals. Our 2014 purebred bull calf crop and commercial heifer crop are our strongest ever. We believe our group of commercial steers this year has the potential to take us to our 4th National Gridmaster Award. We continue to slowly expand the commercial cow herd and anticipate reaching the next big number of 500 head within the next five years. On the purebred side of the operation, we have decided to focus on five to six select cow families. The number

of purebred cows will actually decrease but they will be of much higher quality, all of which have been raised by my sisters and I.

Are all of these goals possible? Of course. Is it easy to say that while I am tied to my desk in Ames studying during calving season while the rest of the family is home doing the “physical work?”

Absolutely. Looking back, I realize that it’s been an awesome ride from a jealous older brother to where we are today with our operation, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. So to all the siblings out there, my best advice is to work together. You’ll definitely have your moments, but never underestimate what you can accomplish together! Happy Birthday Madison and Morgan! ▪

y name is Kylee Silliman, from Fremont, Iowa. I am a junior at Oskaloosa High School. I have been a member of the Cedar Livestock 4-H club for 7 years, and the current Vice President.

I am a member of the Oskaloosa FFA chapter. I run cross country, and play travel softball in the spring and fall, and high school softball in the summer.

My high school team this summer, went to the state tournament for the first time ever.

I have been showing lambs since I have been 5 years old, competing at jackpots, my local county fair, Iowa State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben, American Royal, N.A.I.L.E., Arizona National, National Western, and the Sioux Empire. I also show meat goats and pigs. I have been working at winning a major show for a long time. It means a lot to me that all of my hard work has finally paid off.

I owe a big thank you to all of my family and friends for helping me be successful in the show ring. This is definitely my biggest accomplishment in showing market lambs!

y name is Bailey Hitner. I am 15 years old and I am from Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. This year, I was selected 2014 Champion Jr. Fed Steer at the Nile. It was such a great experience and one that I will never forget!

The final drive this year at the Nile was during the Ranch Rodeo. All of the 1st and 2nd place steers were brought in for the selection of the Champion and Reserve in front of thousands of people. There was so many people and I have never been so nervous and excited in a show ring then I was at that moment. When the judge walked up to me and shook my hand, it was one of my most amazing moments in my life! All of the time, hard

work, and effort that goes into my cattle is endless.

The early mornings and late nights that leads to a hand shake in the show ring is all worth it!

I want to thank my little brother, Tegun for getting up with me to feed and put cattle in the barn. It would be hard for me to make it through without him. I also want to thank my parents for supporting this kind of lifestyle. If it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for them, I would have never have gotten this great opportunity. All of us together make a great team and we all have a part in working together to make these moments ones that we will cherish forever.

would like to start off by saying I am going to miss competing in the show ring. Some of my best memories have been made showing. So in all honesty, winning the NILE still hasn't really hit me yet.

I would still say it was amazing and I am going to be happy for a long time because of it. The best part of winning is I am capable of saying I ended my showing career with a champion. I would also like to thank my fmaily and friends for all the help over the years. And I want to give a huge thank you to Jerrod & Hollie Massey for what they have done for me in the past two years.

y name is Lauren Bilderback. I am the 14 year old daughter of Eric and Shelly Bilderback. Currently, I am an 8th grade member of the El Reno FFA Chapter. My FFA Advisors are my dad and Mr. Bobby Listen.

I am actively involved in my family’s cow calf operation near El Reno, Okla. Showing cattle has been something I have enjoyed since the age of eight. Last year, I had a successful year winning the prospect steer show at both the Oklahoma and Tulsa State Fairs; Grand Champion Hereford Female at the Arizona National; and, the Champion Bred and Owned Hereford Heifer at OYE with an ET daughter of my first show heifer.

Winning the Tulsa State Fair this year, with my Maine steer ‘Ted’, was definitely the highlight of my show career thus far. My goal was to win the whole show. My family and I worked real hard all year. We knew there were others with the same goal and that gave us the motivation to stay hooked up. Once we arrived in Tulsa, I tried to keep it all in perspective and focus on one step at a time. I kept telling myself, you have to win your class before you can win your breed; and you have to win your breed before you can even think about the Grand Drive.

I was nervous all day long, but I love every aspect of showing cattle. When the judge raised his hand to slap ‘Ted’ as his Grand Champion pick, I finally was able to exhale and smiled. That day I was definitely “Living the Dream”.

I believe the most important thing each exhibitor should always do is thank those that helped you achieve your goals. I want to thank Bryan and Stacy McKay, Skip Adams, Joe Devine, Garrick Gross, Wacey McDuffee, and Dave Bilderback for all the help getting ready for the ring. I want to thank my parents for all the support and God for all my many blessings!

bby Lillard exhibited the Grand Champion Market Barrow. She is the daughter of Kregg & Katie Kottman from Abilene, KS. Abby is a 6th grader at Abilene Middle School and has shown pigs for four years. Her barrow was purchased from Greg Thompson in the spring and was shown in the North Central Kansas Livestock Circuit.

Along with showing pigs, she also enjoys playing softball, volleyball and basketball.

Dawson Wuthnow exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Barrow. "I live on a farm 15 miles North of Abilene, KS. My family has bred and raised show pigs for the last 25 years. I have been involved in 4-H since I was 7 years old and have always loved showing pigs. I have recently developed a strong interest in our family breeding program and have become more involved in selecting the boars we will use.

The barrow I was Reserve with was bred, raised, and shown by me. I am an 8th grader at Abilene Middle School and very involved with Academics and sports.

THE BEST OF 2014

2014 was a big year for The Showtimes Magazine. It amazes me how we continue to grow with each issue. Not just a few pages bigger than the year before, 114 pages bigger in our State Fair Edition alone. More advertisements, more Show Results and more Features have made an impact. We traveled across the country to shows and events. We enjoyed visiting with readers and exhibitors at our booths in Denver, Louisville, Kansas City, Omaha, Springfield and Pueblo.

Back when we started The Showtimes Magazine, we wanted to be different than everyone else. We wanted The Showtimes to be about you, not only ads. We've molded The Showtimes into a publication that is all about you. We feel the most important part is traveling to shows and getting each issue into the showman's hands. The showman are our advertiser's target market. They are the ones who purchase show cattle, supplies, feed

and other products that are advertised in our magazine. The response has been overwhelming.

In addition to the magazine, our videos and promotional items have been a big hit. Over 2,000 people watched our Kansas City Show Center video in the first 4 days alone, and we've received over 84,000 views for our videos since 2011.

This year we introduced a custom white show stick as well as gave away combs, hats, towels, jackets, shirts and stickers.

We completely redesigned our Showtimes App and made it available to Android and iPhone users. Finally, we announced the Blackout Jackpot 3 for March 2015!

2014 has been a great year! Thanks to all of our advertisers and subscribers for your support! We have big plans for 2015 that we are already working on. We hope you enjoy our 2014 Showtimes Yearbook!

DIRECTIONS Beat butter and shortening thoroughly with an electric mixer. Add sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat in egg and vanilla and as much flour as the mixer will handle. Stir in remaining flour. Cover and chill for about 1 hr.

INGREDIENTS 1/3 Cup Butter (Softened) 1/3 Cup Shortening (I use butter flavored) 3/4 Cup Sugar 1 tsp. Baking Powder Pinch Salt 1 Egg 1 tsp. Vanilla 2 Cups Flour Almond Extract

Split dough in half, leave one half in the fridge. Flour flat surface lightly and roll out dough and cut out with your favorite cookie cutters. I like to lightly spread almond extract over the top of the cut out cookies, then place them on a lightly grease cookie sheet and bake for about 8 min in a 325 degree oven.

For icing I mix desired food coloring with powdered sugar and add a drop or two of almond extract and enough milk or cream to make a nice thick icing.

These always turn out well for us and usually donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t last very long. The girls love to cut out and decorate sugar cookies for any Holiday.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 A long time ago my Dad taught me the K.I.S.S. principal - Keep It Simple Stupid. Basically - don't make things complicated for yourself or for others. It’s very easy for someone to confuse you and then get you to buy into a lie if they can make things complicated and hard to understand. I don't want to step on any toes here, but throughout time, people have tried to complicate the Truth of God's Word. It's one of the main reasons I've always been totally turned off and turned away by "religion". God spoke to us in a very clear and understandable way and it still fascinates me how He chose to speak to us through people's lives.

I had a conversation the other day with a good friend regarding how religion has complicated the Gospel. The Gospel means "Good News", and yet so many people haven't got a clue what the Good News is or what it means for their

life. The Gospel is God's saving grace given to us through the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. It's simple, it's a historical fact, and it is spoken of throughout the Bible. Note Paul says Christ died for us "according to the Scriptures" and He was buried and rose again the third day "according to the Scriptures". The Scriptures to Paul was the Old Testament. And if you will pay attention you will find Jesus Christ and the Gospel from Genesis through Malachi.

The Gospel is true freedom from the law that sin equals death. Christ payed the price for our sins once and for all on that wooden cross in Judea thousands of years ago. It’s simple - because of our sin, we can not be in the presense of God, He is Holy and we aren't.

But the blood of His son covers our sins, if we accept His gift of salvation and make Him the Lord of our life. Keep it simple and don't turn away from Him. The gospel is God's gift to you. It's free to us, but it cost Him the horrible death of His Son. ▪

Show time again in Louisville and Indianapolis. One of my favorite things to do on a regular basis is EAT, imagine that. Once again, with a lot of trial and error, I have found a couple of places in each of these cities that I frequent and do not mind sharing them with other stock show exhibitors or maybe even some stock show carnies that are looking for a decent place to eat with some tasty food.

I literally stumbled into a little slice of heaven in Louisville “The Cottage Inn.” This place has to rank in the top 5 of my favorite places to eat while on the road. The menu there is pretty simple - home cooked, blue plate type specials for lunch, hamburgers that can’t be beat, and the best deal of all is the Tuesday night special all the fried chicken and trimmings you can eat for $10.00!!! The next place on my list in Louisville is Mark’s Feed Store BBQ on Bardstown RD. This place has some of the best brisket and ribs that can be found. Both of these places are easy to find from the fairgrounds in Louisville which is a big plus for me. You will find the selections at both of these favorites to be generous portions and very affordable.

Moving on up Highway 65 to Indianapolis it’s been a little more difficult to find that little hole in the wall place with the affordable menu; but I have one that’s made the list for both quality and affordability. That would be “Riviera Bar & Grill” on West 38th Street, this is one of the best Mexican food places I have found on the road. It may be a little out of the way for most stock show traffic, but it sure makes up for it in quality, service and affordability. It has easy access and lots of parking if you happen to have a trailer in tow. My next place in Indy is one that you might want to order in pizza for the kids at the motel and then you and the sweetie take a little tour out to “Rick’s Café Boatyard “on the lake on the west side of Indianapolis. This place has some of the best seafood to be found on dry land, the crab cakes are awesome! The menu has a wide variety to choose from. Although you will pay the price for it, you won’t be disappointed with the selections here.

Rams. The list goes on and on. No matter how you look at it, some of the greatest leaders in the livestock world are protégés of the livestock judging program at Colorado State University. If you have ever been to, shown at, or watched a show of any species, then you have heard the pure and honest voice of a ram. Local, state, or national, we have judged them all. If you have ever turned on the television to watch Cattlemen to Cattlemen or if you have ever listened to talks at NCBA, then you have seen a ram. If you have ever

wanted to purchase livestock to win a show or understand the proper way to feed a champion, then you have sought the advice of a ram. If you have ever applied for a job at a major feedyard or pharmaceutical company, then you were interviewed by a ram. If you have ever worked out for a judging trip or asked who was on the committee at a national contest, then you have been in the presence of a ram.

This year’s Centennial team marks an exciting time for Ram Land.

Alumni that are rich with success have watched as current teams brought home a Reserve National Championship in 2012 and a High Team Overall finish at the American Royal in 2013. Our new and renovated animal science building

is a state of the art complex being noted in highly regarded journals and magazines. And then our leader. A man who is respected in the highest circles. A man who has been there, and done that. From humble beginnings, he understands that everyone has the will to win and the will to succeed. Therefore, he tells us all that it is the will to prepare and to perfect that crafts a champion. Shane Bedwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presence at CSU demands greatness from young people. He expects us to be leaders in all that we do and champions in life. Students and judging team members are quick to recognize that anything but the absolute best will not be acceptable nor tolerated. Winning is a must.

But as a loving husband and father of two, Shane and all rams recognize that winning in life is not just about the blue ribbon. Over time the trophies collect dust, banners begin to fall apart, and belt buckles may crack. But what it took to get

there, well those memories last a lifetime. The hard work and effort will never be forgotten. The contacts and relationships made are carried forth in all future endeavors. But biggest of all, well that is friendship.

Friendship among teammates who came from all walks of life, but who came together as one. Friendships among team members and coaches, mentors and idols. And bigger even yet, would be friendships eventually carved among one time arch rivals.

In Fort Collins, members of the judging team have all learned that this beautiful thing, this thing we call livestock judging, is so much bigger than placing four animals.

It is not about compare judging. It is not about getting a 50 on every class. It is about getting the good ones up and the bad ones down. It is about being able to sort through 200 bulls and find the next herd sire. It is about being able to breed the right boar for each sow and raise an industry changer. It is about

evaluating 500 market lambs at a state fair and finding the best one.

Winning a livestock judging contest is something competitive evaluators strive to do; both individually and as a team. Every one of us craves being called for a high set. Every one of us wants to be the low drop off the floor. Every one of us wants to be a champion. But the thing is, we all become one the very first time we step into the judging van.

The moment we decide to represent the green and gold, well that moment makes us all champions.

All that is necessary to do is study the resume of our alumni, the resume of CSU. Brett Kaysen, Todd Wise, and Craig Talkington. Rams.

Each are proud K-Staters!! What else do they share? A deep seeded passion and unbelievable working

knowledge of the industry; along with the character to walk into the ring and simply do things right! Treat people with respect, enjoy your opportunity to teach young people and understand the impossibility of making everyone happy. Give an honest appraisal and talk them accurately and opportunities will continue to come your way. All of those skills started from an outstanding family upbringing but were honed as part of the K-State Livestock Judging Team tradition!

Purple Pride Here at K-State, we take unbelievable pride in the history of our programs and the lasting impact K-Staters have had on the livestock sector. I think the story of one person puts our philosophy into perspective. Dr. Don Good.

As an evaluator of livestock, Don Good is widely considered one of the greatest cattle judges of all time.

His understanding of industry, astute eye, amazing communication skills and steadfast moral code gave him the opportunity to judge every major show in the country and numerous events worldwide.

What’s cool is that I honestly think Dr. Good derived as much joy from judging a Kansas county fair (which I believe he made an effort to judge every county show in the state) as he did judging the International in Chicago. He just loved people and livestock no matter what the scope of the event! Though I’m sure you could highlight many great moments in his judging career, the 1969 International in Chicago stands as an unbelievable moment in the livestock industry. That year, judge Don Good selected the first ever crossbred to win a major livestock event and forever changed industry views on crossbreeding.

What we see as the norm today was anything but normal in that era.

Purebred livestock were viewed as superior to that of their crossbred,

“mongrel,” counterparts. With one “slap” Don Good changed that view. Conoco was a Charolais/ Angus cross that weighed just shy of 1300 pounds at 15 months of age and went on to grade middle choice with .23 inches of backfat and an 18.6 square inch ribeye! In 1969!!

We couldn’t ask for any better four decades later. Don Good was a pioneer – with GUTS! Dr. Good also served as the head livestock judging coach at Kansas State University for 20 years, spanning a portion of three decades. A decorated collegiate competitor himself, Don was named the High Individual Overall at the American Royal and the Second High Overall at the Chicago International. Former team members take such pride in their affiliation with the livestock judging program at K-State.

Their enthusiasm as alumni is unbelievable and it stems from the efforts of Don Good and the impact he had on the lives of some many young people as their coach, teacher and mentor. To many, judging success is measured in wins. Victories are great, of which Don Good achieved many, but lives touched is what generates a legacy. Dr. Good believed in a consistent approach to teaching the principles of the livestock industry and developing life skills through livestock judging. His students state it simply – “He made me a better person!” Now that’s the mark of a true Champion – and Champions wear purple!

KLAHOMA TATE NIVERSITY A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

E

ighty-nine years ago a group of animal science students at Oklahoma State University claimed the national championship victory in livestock judging and began a tradition of excellence.

Since 1925 Oklahoma State students have claimed 15 national championships, more than any other university in the country.

“Due to the success of students early on, the program has become a legacy that has attracted many students to OSU,” said BlakeBloomberg, Ph.D., OSU Livestock Judging Coach.

Students from all across the country

have accepted the challenge and joined the livestock judging legacy.

For some students the program has become a family tradition.

“Both my parents and brother judged on teams at OSU before me, so it was really the only option for me,” said Kass Pfeiffer, 2013 team member.

“We are very fortunate to have tremendous students, a supportive administration and a highly supportive base of alumni,” said Mark Johnson, Ph.D., past OSU Livestock Judging Team Coach. “Our expectation is to be successful.”

It is the sheer success of the program that attracted other students to Oklahoma State.

“Success was never expected or required by our coaches and staff; it was merely the result of the values and goals this institution has instilled in the generation before us,” said Taylor Graham, 2013 team member and 2014 assistant coach.

Values and goals that have extended far past their year on the judging team. Members of teams have gained life lessons that have impacted their future success.

“The endless hours we put in, are worth far more than the results of the contents,” Graham said.

Team members become lifelong friends and make connections that influence their career decisions.

“Being on the livestock judging team at OSU opens doors to meet people that will help you the rest of your life,” said Gary Agar, 2014 team member. “It is far more than a résumé builder.”

Agar and his teammates will have the opportunity to once again turn a page in history, just as the 1925 team. With the support of team members and coaches that came before them, they will represent a program where excellence has become expected.

radition, pride and excellence have characterized the Texas A&M University Livestock Judging Team for more than a century.

As members of one of the mostwinning livestock judging programs in the nation, students build life-long friendships, network with leaders in agriculture, travel the country, gain valuable life skills and obtain a firstclass education from one of the finest institutions in the country.

Established in 1903, the Livestock Judging Team has evolved into a national powerhouse. Over the past century, 12 Livestock Judging Teams have been crowned national

champions including the reigning 2013 National Champion Livestock Judging Team. Other championships came in 1913, 1919, 1959, 1965, 1967, 1987, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

As agricultural ambassadors of Texas A&M University, the judging program has full support from the highly respected Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

“The judging teams in the Department of Animal Science are a vital component and contribute immensely to the overall success of our teaching program,” said Dr. Russell Cross, head of animal science at Texas A&M University. “The teams

bring tremendous visibility to our department and to Texas A&M through national championships.â&#x20AC;?

Each year, the brightest and most talented students are recruited to join the Livestock Judging Team.

The ideal student must possess integrity and honesty along with a strong work ethic that involves relentless dedication and competitive drive. The program is built around these attributes and beliefs which have proven successful for the Texas A&M team for many years.

An aspiring livestock judgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collegiate career usually begins during their sophomore year, when they enroll in Animal Science 289 to work on livestock judging fundamentals. In their junior year, in-house and transfer students take Animal Science 315, the livestock judging class. These courses teach students selection and evaluation skills, oral and written reasoning, critical thinking, decision making skills and above all, the leadership skills required not only to excel in competition, but in life as well.

Students interested in trying out for the team begin practicing in the fall of their junior year and officially begin competition in the spring.

As team members, students travel to contests and practices at major shows and ranches in Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi, Minnesota and Missouri, prior to competing in the national contest in

Louisville in the fall of their senior year.

Traveling to the various contests provides team members opportunities not available to all students. On many of the trips to ranches and livestock operations, students meet industry professionals and leaders from across the nation, further enhancing their network of contacts and allowing them to explore the many career options available after graduation.

In addition to competing in contests, the team members have many opportunities to influence and train young 4-H and FFA livestock judges through workshops and clinics hosted by the Livestock Judging Team at Texas A&M. For the first time, an adult livestock judging clinic was held in the summer of 2014. County Extension Agents and agriculture science teachers were able to sharpen their evaluation and reasons skills, and received information to enhance their youth teams.

The Livestock Judging Team carries significance to the Texas agricultural industry. To date, nearly 1,000 Aggies have been a part of the Livestock Judging Team who now have successful careers as veterinarians, breed association professionals, professors, coordinators of livestock shows, teachers, lawyers, lobbyists and

much more. Because of their love and loyalty to the Texas A&M livestock judging program, these experienced judging alumni serve as mentors and supporters of our program.

STRIVING FOR HONOR, ON AND OFF THE JUDGING FLOOR. In the past seven years, Texas Tech University’s livestock judging program has earned four national championship titles, produced 20 All-American team members, and set the all-time record high score at the International Contest.

But, beneath these accolades lies the true objective of Texas Tech’s livestock judging program; the goal of developing young people into honorable, humble and selfless Red Raiders.

Every fall a new group of livestock judging enthusiasts step onto Texas Tech’s campus in Lubbock with the aspiration of being on the next national champion livestock judging team. What each team member soon realizes is that they are now a part of a family who supports and

motivates each other through every accomplishment, as well as the hardships.

“I would say the key to our success would have to be the fact that we always promote the team first, rather than individual accomplishments,” said Assistant Professor and Coach Ryan Rathmann. “My students learn selflessness, risk management, and confident public speaking – all of which translate to future success in their personal lives as well as the competitive business world.”

season, the livestock, meat, horse and wool teams take pride in each other’s successes and provide constant encouragement as each team pursues a national championship title. “Our belief is that when one team succeeds, we all succeed,” said Rathmann.

The meat animal evaluation team is also recognized for developing and enhancing skills in students that will aid in the success of their professional lives. This contest uniquely combines meat judging and livestock evaluation into a

down-to-earth and real world setting. Mark Miller, professor and San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Distinguished Chair in Meat Science, as well as coach of Texas Tech’s meat judging team, credits Tech’s successful program to the hard work and passion of the students.

According to Miller, this contest combines the livestock and meat teams to broaden their knowledge about animal agriculture. Students learn and apply practical livestock and meat knowledge, which livestock professionals utilize in their everyday careers. The students have been

highly successful in this arena of competition as well, winning five national championships in the past eight years.

Although tradition runs deep in the Texas Tech livestock judging program with the school’s first national championship being earned in 1934, the success the team has experienced during the past seven years is unprecedented in the history of collegiate livestock judging.

“Success begets success,” Rathmann explained. “These students’ accomplishments in livestock judging, helps transition them into high achieving professionals.”

Many of Rathmann’s students are now playing significant roles within their respective careers. Although these professions are in a variety of fields throughout the country, the majority of them are making their mark in the agriculture industry as university faculty, livestock judging coaches, livestock producers, livestock show coordinators,

agriculture businessmen, meat scientists and agriculture communicators. The Texas Tech livestock program also has students who have completed or are currently working towards their masters and doctoral degrees in the areas of agriculture business, animal science and meat science.

One of these former students, Bryan Bernhard, was recently hired as an assistant professor of ruminant nutrition at Texas Tech University.

“My wife and I are not originally from West Texas, but the family environment, selfless culture and passion for helping students succeed in life is what excited us the most about returning to the Texas Tech family,” explained Bernhard. “The experiences and skills I gained while on a judging team at Tech have been more valuable in life and in my current role as a professor, than any other organization or educational event with which I have been involved.”

COLLEGE BLACK HAWK STRIVES FOR SUCCESS IN ALL AREAS.

lack Hawk College, East Campus was founded just outside of Kewanee, Illinois.

As an early staff member, Dan Hoge started the livestock judging program and continued to be a pioneer as he coached the first midwest team to compete at the Houston Stock Show rodeo. At the Houston Stock Show awards banquet, when giving trophies to the top three teams in swine, the announcer said, “Third High Team, Black Hawk East from Kewanee, Illinois… haven't heard of them.”

As Mr. Hoge walked past the podium, he was quick to let the announcer know, “Sir, just wait, you WILL hear about us.” Soon the interest in the judging program and

campus increased, as well as the community of Kewanee. With the close connections of surrounding neighbors that are known for competing at national level in all species students are always given the opportunity outside the class room to continue their passion for the show ring, as well as the industry.

Today the school is well represented across the country competing at many contests such as the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, National Western Stock Show and Rodeo, San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, Houston Stock Show and Rodeo, AkSar-Ben, Iowa Beef Expo, Sioux Falls, and the Stockman held in Indiana.

Alongside of Dan Hoge, he has had

the pleasure of working with Lee Denzer, assisting in coaching from the 80’s through the 90’s, Andy Rash who began in early 2000’s and was a part of one of the greatest memories, co-coaching the 2005 undefeated team. Brian Arnold co-coached in the late 2000’s, and currently, Jared Boyert that started his journey in 2012. Without the generosity from the previous and current coaches, the program wouldn’t be as successful today.

With a student body of approximately 1,000 students and 400 of them with heavy agriculture backgrounds, Black Hawk College strives for success in all areas. Represented with national acclaimed teams in areas of: livestock judging, soils and crops judging, horticulture, horse judging, and a horse show team.

At the 2014 NACTA Contest, hosted at Northwest Missouri State,

Black Hawk College East won the Sweepstakes from the participation of those teams. Recent livestock judging team success includes: 2013 National Western Stock Show and Rodeo Champion Team, 2013 Houston Stock Show and Rodeo Champion Team, and this fall the 2014 National Barrow Show Champion Team.

Black Hawk College East Campus student life is very active in many activities giving back to the industry and community that continues to support them. By hosting the Annual Black Hawk East Invitational Judging Contest held each spring, Stock Show University Clinics, Sunglo Clinics, Illinois Beef Expo Livestock Judging Clinic and Contest, assisting in the NJSA Summer Type Conference, and assisting with the Henry-Stark 4-H Livestock Judging team, Black Hawk College East Campus

Dan Hoge is well known for his words of wisdom in and outside of his animal science classroom and one of his most iconic sayings is, “In this world, there are players and participants. It’s up to you to decide which you will be.” It is quite evident Mr. Hoge decided not to just be the participant, his passion and drive for educating and coaching todays’ youth has built a legacy that Black Hawk College East continues to represent.

B

utler Community College located in El Dorado, Kansas has a long-standing history as being one of the premier Jr College livestock judging programs in the country.

The Butler Community College livestock judging team is rooted deep in tradition. The four coaches in the programs history have taken on a passionate approach to teaching students to become better stockmen.

Stockmen who are able voice their opinion and support it with factual analysis of livestock.

Although instructors and supporters at Butler take pride in the successes of the team, they take more interest in growing and educating the students and team members. The no

man left behind approach has had a trickle down effect on many Butler alum, allowing each judger to reach their full potential and continue to make an impact on the industry in various ways and occupations.

With this approach Butler has become nationally recognized for its upstanding tradition of success on and off of the judging floor. Butler sees a direct correlation between standout students who make upstanding efforts academically and in becoming elite livestock judgers.

Since its inception in 2003, 40 livestock judging team members have grasped the All-American award.

This accomplishment is double that of any other judging program and is a testament to Butlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s priority of academic excellence.

In regards to judging; consistency in success has been a focal point for the program. Since 1997, Butler has campaigned 54 Champion or Reserve Champion team honors at National Contests. From that same year the Butler teams have been the only Jr College program to consistently place in the top 10 at every one of those Nation Contests.

Not to mention countless Butler alumni have gone onto be members of National Champion teams at the senior college level.

As for the future success of Butler, it has always been to the utmost importance of teaching students to excel not only in the classroom, but with judging as well. If the program continues operating with character, integrity, hard work, and academic excellence, strong traits Butlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s built a name upon, the winning will indirectly take care of itself.

onnors State College is readily known for the “Tradition of Excellence” moniker.

But what does it mean to us? For us, the Connors livestock judging team tradition is one that constantly molds and produces some of the finest and most influential members of the livestock industry across the nation – the type of excellence we expect our students to strive for every single day.

Connors State College, home of the Cowboys, is located in eastern Oklahoma at the intersection of I-40 and HWY 64, in Warner. The campus farm includes 1,650 acres of fenced pasture for cattle during development and A.I. and embryo work. All of these animal enterprises are incorporated into classwork, labs

and judging practice as much as possible. There are several runs and paddocks housing show cattle, which includes registered Angus, Simmental, and Santa Gertrudis cattle. Not to mention, we have one of the nation’s largest college-run bull tests, with 150 .head capacity and a bi-annual sale Our livestock judging team attracts students from across the country to participate in one of the most elite programs in the nation. Judgers travel across the U.S. to more than 12 contests per year. Our program is one of just a few to have been consistently competitive nationally for the last 30 years. Many of our alumni have been members of national champion teams in senior college, and have gone on to judge national shows. Furthermore, many have gone on to coach, as well, with several of our former alumni becoming arguably some of the most successful coaches in competition history. In addition to competitive

success, many of our students have become All-Americans, thus achieving high marks not just in judging, but in .academics as well Our program has been known for not only producing top-flight livestock evaluators, but perhaps more importantly, better people. This theme started with legendary coach Jerry McPeak and continues now through .current coach Clint Mefford Every year, many high school

seniors decide to take their education to the next level and to become an integral member of the CSC livestock judging team family. From there, these students are taught valuable life and career skills, which help to sharpen decision making and problem solving abilities, all while creating outstanding stewards for the agricultural community at large. Not to mention, being a member of the CSC livestock judging team helps give students

invaluable connections with numerous livestock industry leaders. Competitive judging teams actively draw ambitious, motivated, and highly energetic agricultural students to their programs. Former judging team members from CSC have left a substantial mark not only in agriculture but also in other industries. Their example should be used as a benchmark for which current and future judging team members constantly strive.

L

ocated in the heart of Oklahoma, Redlands Community College is one of the top ranked livestock judging programs in the United States. At Redlands, we strive to educate students far past just judging. We pride ourselves on the fact that our students can think critically, make decisions independently and communicate effectively. For the past 2 years, members of the Redlands Community College judging team have had a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Redlands students have proven to be reliable, successful and influential members of the Ag community.

This prestigious program has made

quite a name for itself by its excellent track record. Since 2008, Redlands has won 4 consecutive National Championships, 19 All Americans, 2 Coach of the Year awards along with many other contest champions. Over the years Redlands judging teams have set countless records including two oral reasons records at Louisville and recently set the record for sheep at Louisville.

The team will compete during the fall and spring semesters at Flint Hills Classic, Mid American Classic, Tulsa State Fair, State Fair of Texas, American Royal, Texas Tech Contest, NAILE, Griswold Cattle Contest, National Western Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, NACTA and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The program is lucky to

have 20 members this year from all over the United States including California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The judging program was started over 25 years ago by current faculty member Ed Zweiacher. He coached many competitive teams and was able to set the foundation and provide a place for local students with strong ties to livestock evaluation a place to compete. Ed permanently turned the team over to Dr. Clay Elliot in the fall of 2004.

While there he took the program to even greater heights making them one of the nations best. Currently Redlands Community College team is coached by Mr. Brandon Callis

of Needville,Texas. In his first year coaching at Redlands, Callis was named National Junior College Coach of the year in and 2013 and was previously given that honor in 2011 while at Blinn college.

Other than coaching, Callis judges livestock shows across the nation.

Kyndal Reitzenstein, a Redlands Alumni, states, â&#x20AC;&#x153;My experience being on the Redlands Livestock Judging team was nothing short of incredible. Callis is not only one of the most respected judges/coaches in the country, but an even better person who taught us about greater things than just judging.â&#x20AC;?

This nationally recognized program enjoys giving back to the community and the industry.

JARA SETTLES & TUCKER STEWART PASS THE BAR!

In May, Jara Settles (NE) and Tucker Stewart (KS) graduated from Washburn University School of Law. Jara is currently practicing in Kansas City at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP in the firm’s Pharmaceutical and Medical Device division. She represents companies in products liability matters with a focus on animal health.

Tucker’s exposure to farming and ranching gives him a unique perspective on the practice of law. Stewart graduated with honors from Washburn, where he helped found the first ag-related student group, the Washburn Agricultural Law Society. Stewart joins KLA as a part of the legal and government affairs staff where he will use his background and education to assist members with legal questions and lobby at the state capitol. Stewart also will help coordinate the KLA Dairy Council.
