From the very first time you stepped into the show ring, there is a fire in the stomach of every exhibitor, breeder, and livestock enthusiast. As time passes on, new techniques are learned, products are developed, partnerships are made, and rivalries are formed. One thing that has remained constant, regardless of what has happened in the world, is the strength of our stock show family. When fires blazed, blizzards stormed, and tragedies have struck, we have always come together. When times have gotten tough, we let go of grudges, put aside competitiveness, and banded together to support those in need. We may not know what tomorrow is bringing, but we do know that we are TOUGHER TOGETHER.

We are living through a historic time. Although the World has been spinning at a different speed the past few months due to COVID-19, Agriculture does not slow down. Livestock are being bred, born and sold. Shows are being planned. Dreams are being envisioned. This May/June issue of The Showtimes is a celebration. Highlighting the outstanding genetics, events and people that make up our industry. Junior Nationals are upon us. Back by popular demand, our Junior National Preview shines light on not only the shows but the breeds themselves. This special feature also includes exclusive family articles by some of the various breeds’ top families! We are excited to honor a family highly involved with multiple breeds as our newest inductee into The Showtimes Hall of Fame. New this year, is our Class of 2020 Yearbook where we highlight graduates from within Agriculture ranging from High School Seniors to those receiving their Doctorates. With many Commencement Ceremonies being delayed or canceled, The Showtimes is using our platform as the best both in print and online to recognize the Graduating Class of 2020! Their hard work and accomplishments are something to be celebrated! Along with our print feature, on May 1st we hosted a Virtual Commencement Ceremony with special guests Charles W. The Showtimes held our 2020 Virtual Graduation Ceremony to honor this year’s graduates! Nearly 200 livestock graduating high school and college seniors as well as those receiving their doctorates were recognized! A special thanks to Charles W. JUNIOR NATIONAL UPDATE Important NJHS Announcement – Please read this carefully. This is not a cancellation. We understand this doesn’t have a lot of concrete answers, but we are working hard for our members. STATUS OF OHIO The staff of the AMAA & ACA have been continually monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 and its impacts on our upcoming National Junior Heifer Show. The well-being and health of our families is our top priority.
The Showtimes recently held a social media contest where our followers voted the Cross as the Best Hog Breed! They defeated Hampshire 58% to 42% with 22,300+ total votes!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN We are diligently exploring options for an alternative location, but at this time we do not have any confirmations. We realize our event this year will look and feel different than it has in the past, but we are doing everything we can to still hold an event for our juniors, however, we must be cognizant of the guidelines regarding social distancing and group gatherings and what can be accomplished without compromising these guidelines. At this time, we will be extending the entry deadline. If we are able to secure an alternate location and it does not work for you to attend, we will refund your entry fees. In the event of a complete cancellation, all entry fees will be refunded. Please note, refunds will not be issued until we have a firm answer about the event. If you have questions regarding your entries please feel free to contact us.

During the past few weeks, we have been in contact with our facility in Lima, monitoring the reopening of Ohio and how that will affect our event June 28-July 4. We were able to have a conversation with the Ohio governor’s office this week and we received the news that we will not be able to continue as planned with our show in Lima. This is not the news we were hoping for and we are disappointed that we cannot go to Ohio, but we must respect the decisions of state officials.

Steck Cattle is a family operation owned and operated by Craig and Stephanie Steck and their two sons, Keagan (7) and Carter (19 months). They are located in Woodstock, Minnesota. Both Craig and Stephanie have extensive background in show cattle as they had major wins as juniors and are well versed in breeding, selection, feeding and caring for show cattle, as well as all aspects of the seedstock industry. They firmly believe in building their herd and resulting champions through the concentration of elite cow families. REMEMBERING BROOKE

rooke was an avid lover of the livestock industry, especially showing sheep. She started her sheep showing career in 2013. Her two older siblings, Ty and Hannah, were already showing cattle and pigs, so she followed suit. She always begged her dad to show sheep and he constantly said no. This was until March 15, 2013, when her steer died two days after the deadline for her to register him at the county fair. She cried all day and came home and asked yet again. Her dad, Steven, finally gave in and it was a tremendous decision. She showed at two county fairs and was never beat in showmanship. Her goal was to win at the state level and she finally did. She was the Grand Champion FFA Senior Sheep Showman at the 2019 Nebraska State Fair. With the help of her coach, mentor, and close family friend, Mark Hassebrook, all her dreams came true. She was finally one of the best Sheep Showman in the state of Nebraska. She will forever be a true example of hard work, dedication, and passion to the younger generations of Sheep Showman. With this, she will be sponsoring the next ten years of Showtimes Banners at the Platte County Fair for all divisions in Sheep Showmanship. Her family would like to thank all those who have loved and supported them after Brooke and her mom, Lisa, died in a tragic car accident. •

Less than twenty-four hours after the historic shutdown of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, nearly 1,500 people gathered at BCR Ventures’ ranch in Bryan, Texas to exhibit heifers at the #BTHO Corona Virus Show. Heifers that were destined for the Texas National. What is going down as a “Once in a Lifetime” event, was made possible by the joint effort of BCR Ventures’ Brian and Caroline Rogers and the strong bond of the Agricultural Community. March 11, 2020 | 1:00 PM Caroline Rogers was among the Junior Heifer families from all across the state of Texas who were finally beginning to unload in Houston after waiting in the notorious trailer lines associated with the massive show when word of the shutdown got out. Brian’s daughter, who was interning at HLSR, called to inform him of the breaking development. With the news, it was decided by Brian and Caroline that they wanted to give their BCR Ventures’ kids an opportunity to exhibit their

They quickly put together a flyer promoting a show, #BTHO Corona Virus Show, at their place in Bryan scheduled for the following day and posted it around the show as well as on Facebook. March 11, 2020 | 4:00 PM It took no time at all for word of the show to spread like a wildfire amongst Texas families. Multiple people asked to open up the show to families outside of those tied to BCR’s. With BCR’s ranch being located just 2-2 ½ hours from Houston, it was easily accessible to families who had already traveled South for the show. The Texas Jackpot Shows Facebook page share BCR’s post promoting the #BTHO Corona Virus Show.

What Brian and Caroline originally expected to be a 50 head show turned into a 427 head show and a gathering of nearly 1,500 people. If someone ever doubts the bonds of those involved in Agriculture, the impact of the #BTHO Corona Virus Show should be used as inspiration. No phone calls were made by the Rogers family. Through word of mouth alone, donations came in by the droves. They brought in $25,000 in cash and $30,000-$40,000 worth of prizes. Everything from saltwater fishing trips and buckles to embryos and semen. The Rogers stayed up all night long helping people get to their place. They opened up their show barn, stalled trailers in their pastures as well as their neighbor’s. As their show barn was still under construction, there was no water and no power. The nearby Sunbelt dealership brought in three large generators to power everything. A local BBQ joint donated lunch and people showed up with additional food and drinks. When it was all said and done, the #BTHO Corona Virus Show hosted over 100 volunteers. The Rogers’ phones went nuts with people calling to see what they could do to help. College kids showed up to line up classes and hand out prizes. Brian Rogers was overwhelmed by the response saying, “When you really want to get something done, people have your back.” The Supreme Champions walked away with $3,000-$5,000 in cash and those who stood dead last in their class left with nothing less than $20. When asked his thoughts on how everything went down, Brian humbly said, “I couldn’t have planned it better with 6 months. We are both grateful and thankful. We had no expectations – just wanted the kids to be able to show.” •

CHEESECAKE BY: LAURIE REID, SHOWTIMES
INGREDIENTS
CRUST 12 Whole Graham Crackers 1/4 Sugar 1/4 tsp Salt 1 Stick of Butter, Melted

CHEESECAKE 20oz. Cream Cheese, Softened 2/3 Cup Sugar 1/2 Cup Sour Cream 1/2 Cup Whipping Cream 3 Eggs 2 tsp. Vanilla Pinch of Salt
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°. Pulse the graham crackers, sugar and salt in a food processor. Once ground into a fine/medium crumb, add melted butter. Mix until completely combined. Press mixture into 9” springform pan using measuring cup. Have crust go on the bottom and up 1 1/2” up the side of the pan. Set Aside. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar with a hand mixer until smooth. Add whipping cream and sour cream. Mix to combine. Add vanilla, salt and eggs (one at a time). Beat until smooth. Pour mixture into prepare crust. Level with spoon. Wrap bottom and sides of the springform pan with aluminum foil (do not cover the top of the cheesecake). This will prevent water from leaking into your pan while baking. Place wrapped pan inside a larger roasting pan. Place in preheated oven. Fill pan with water 1/4 way up side of cheesecake (the water bath will help prevent your cheesecake from cracking). Bake for 1 hour. DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN. After 1 hour, turn the oven off (still not opening the door) and leave the cheesecake to cool in the oven for at least 2 hours until the pan is cool enough to take out without oven mitts. Remove from oven and dispose of water bath and foil. Leave the cheesecake in the springform pan while cooling or until the cheesecake pulls away from the side. Chill in fridge for 4 hours to overnight. Serve plain or with your choice of topping. ENJOY! •

I was fortunate enough to

As I worked my way into high school, along with livestock judging and showing, volleyball played a huge part of my life so much that I gave up judging for a year and a half to pursue my dreams of playing in college. At the time it seemed like the choice to make considering I had offers from the volleyball teams I watched on tv growing up. They say that God makes everything happen for a reason though, and it was when I tore every ligament in my ankle, and had to undergo surgery, is when I knew this was not the path I was meant to be on. I could live another day without volleyball, but I could not live without agriculture and livestock.

hen I was eight years old, I remember my parents trying to teach me about livestock judging and giving reasons. They would set up random classes of household items, such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and steak sauce, and ask me to rank them and tell what I liked and disliked about each one of them. Little did I realize this somewhat “silly” task would lead me to the path I am on today.

We were very fortunate to have a supportive family and friends who helped us achieve our goals along the journey. Along with showing, we both were heavily involved in the Weld County livestock judging program. We learned from some of the best in the industry at a very young age and it paved the way for our ability to evaluate livestock. After months of debating where to attend college, I decided to attend Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma and get back to livestock judging. I was on Brandon Callis’ first team there. Although our team was successful enough to be named the National Champion team that year, it was the lessons about stock, life and the good Lord above from Brandon Callis that will forever be instilled in me. Brandon has been a mentor to me for many years and I know the values he taught me will be instilled in me as I continue on with coaching.

After graduating from Redlands with my Associates in Science, I continued my education and livestock judging career at Oklahoma State University and judged for Dr. Blake Bloomberg. At OSU I double majored in Animal Science and Agricultural Communications. Our judging team had a very successful run, ultimately being named the Reserve National Champion team. I also was fortunate enough to earn All-American honors, be in the top four at the majors and win reasons at every national contest. Dr. Bloomberg taught me how to be competitive and yet always reminded me how to keep it simple when sorting four animals. After graduating OSU, I was faced with a tough decision of what my next move would be. I didn’t feel like my journey at OSU was
over and decided to stay to get my master’s in Animal Science and help assist Dr. Bloomberg coaching the team for two and a half years. The teams that I helped coach at OSU will go down in my books as talented individuals that eventually become some of my best friends. I expect big things out of them and I know they will make positive impacts on the livestock industry. At OSU, I also met Blake Goss and he not only pushed me to become a better livestock evaluator, but his family also allowed me to become more involved within the swine industry, and for that I will forever be thankful. Out of all my decisions, I would say learning under Dr. Bloomberg on how to coach two National Champion teams and be successful within the industry were some of the most influential experiences. I also appreciate that he helped pave the way for female coaches in collegiate livestock judging. I had the privilege to work alongside Ashley Judge for a year and a half while coaching at OSU and I know she would agree that we were given tremendous opportunities as some of the only females who were coaching at the time. Colorado State played a huge role in my livestock judging development as I was growing up. Some of my fondest memories were attending Livestock Judging Camp and trying to give
the best set of reasons each night to Shane Bedwell. Both my parents are CSU alumni, and my dad was a member of a successful team coached by Dr. John Edwards. When the opportunity arose to step into the program again, I was excited to give back and help continue a tradition.

Not only do you learn how to evaluate and break down stock, but the life lessons and industry peers you meet along the way are things that you carry with you forever. Some important goals of mine at CSU are helping students improve their decision-making and public speaking skills and how to successfully judge livestock. Even more importantly, I plan to take my knowledge gained from previous coaches and help students apply them to their everyday life and education. I want to thank President Joyce McConnell and Dr. Keith Belk for allowing me this opportunity and their friendship, as well as everyone who helped me get to this point. I look forward to working with CSU alumni, facility and, most importantly, the students in the near future. GO RAMS! •

There’s no question the nation’s livestock showing plans for 2020 drastically changed in just the first months of the year and livestock shows of all sorts are being canceled. Two Ohio show cattle families, both involved 4-H advisors in their local Thornville, Ohio chapters decided to do something about it. From grassroots originating in the pasture, Drew and Elaine with local friend Jessica Boring created a one of a kind opportunity for the show to continue. This is where Virtual Cattle Battle, an organized online livestock show, began. The mission is simple: get kids in the barn again. Their following quickly developed in March of this year and positive feedback started rolling in when calves were washed, and halters used again. There are some adjustments to the format of these shows since this has never been done. Drew Glenn clarifies the digital format isn’t meant to replace the experience of a physical livestock show but says “sometimes it’s what you can do to participate and have some fun with your animal and not what you can’t do for the time being”. Some exhibitors were preparing for their final show season in high school and some of the
families have never shown cattle in a live show. The mission is shaping into a success. The first online competition was held in April for Ohio exhibitors with help from OSU Livestock Judging team. Profits from the contest were donated back to the OSU team to help them get through this challenging time since their events are also being canceled. The latest show is a National Jackpot that closed April 30th, judged by Ryan Rash. He was excited to donate his time, as long as profits went to an agriculturalbased organization. Hundreds of Facebook followers voted for the National 4-H organization to receive the support. The excitement Drew has for getting kids and families involved in livestock shows is clear and the demand for it is overwhelming. “We won’t stop trying to give kids a fun and rewarding place to show their animals”, says Drew. Private livestock groups are lining up for taking advantage of the format and keeping shows hopes alive for this season. Virtual Cattle Battle is accepting the call by scheduling to host individual contests on their website. “It takes a village.” This seems like the
best way to describe our operation. CK Cattle was established on July 18, 1997 when a “show jock” married a “sheep girl.” Much has changed since then, but one thing that hasn’t, is our passion for good livestock and the
desire to surround ourselves with great people. When we started this journey, it was predominantly a club calf and club lamb operation. As time evolved, we decided the purebred cattle better
suited our goals. We started breeding Simmentals for the maternal side of our club calf project but liked them so well that they have remained the foundation of our operation. As we added to our family, we also added breeds to our operation. Each girl has their breed of choice. It started as a way for them to not have to compete against one another but has grown into something much more for them…
Cagney:
I hold the Charolais breed very near and dear to my heart. It may sound ridiculous, but white cows would surely make the short list of things I could not dream of living without. My family’s experience with the breed dates back to before I was even born. My dad worked at the notorious Thomas Ranch in the early years of his relationship with mom, and well, the rest is history.
My love for the Hereford breed began when I was just three years old. At the time, my dad was working as a field man for the American Hereford Association and my favorite thing to do was read the Hereford World. I would stare out the window every
was watching the board members hand off their jackets that made me realize that this was something I wanted to be a part of someday. Because of that first year’s impactful experience, I plan to run for the National Junior Hereford Association Junior Board. Junior Nationals is still my favorite week of the year because it’s my first chance to see all of my closest friends in one place since the year before. Hereford Junior Nationals has allowed me to make lifelong connections within the breed that I am forever grateful for.
Kenidey:
The Simmental breed always interested me, but it was in 2014 when I decided that this was the breed for me. That year was the first junior national I attended. Even though I did not get to show that year, it was the people that made me want to go back. That year I participated in the novice program. We did many fun activities that included visiting Church Hill Downs and the Louisville Sluggers museum. The week of activities brought me many new friends that I am still friends with today. 2015 was when I finally started showing.

time we drove past our neighbor’s, who had a herd of over a thousand commercial Herefords. When I was old enough, it was no question what breed I would show. The beginning of my show career included Hereford steers and begging my dad to let me go to junior nationals. Every time I asked, I was told it was too far away and too hot where it was being held. It wasn’t until 2015, when I was 14 and had been to two other breed junior nationals (Simmental and Charolais) a couple times each, that I finally found my favorite of them all. Now, five years later, I can still remember that week in Grand Island like it was yesterday. The atmosphere of the whole week was like nothing I’d ever experienced. I was a new kid on the block but I didn’t feel like it even for a second. The people were so welcoming, not to mention all the fun that was had. The Sullivan Supply obstacle course, the three-onthree tournament, and tailgating are still some of my favorite memories to this day. It was, however, the awards ceremony, of all things, that had me hooked. Everybody drug their lawn chairs into the middle of the show ring, we honored the accomplishments of the exhibitors in the contests throughout the week, and, my favorite, listened to the junior board members’ retiring addresses. It

It was after Cally finished her 4-H career that I got to be on the end of a halter of a Charolais, but I can assure you it was worth the wait. The year was 2010 and Charolais Junior Nationals were in South Dakota. I will always remember the string of heifers that year, females that have went on to be cornerstones for operations across the country. Most importantly, I’ll never forget the people: Kendra Elder and myself duking it out in one of the most intense showmanship contests of my life, Cally Thomas and the rest of the Junior Board running a show, competing in the fitting contest against what would someday become some of my best friends in the breed, and Troy Thomas never leaving my side even though he had countless other juniors with cattle there. No words will EVER be able to accurately describe how blessed I am to have the Thomas family in my life. Not only was I given complete access to genetics of the breeds lead matriarch’s, but more importantly a family that will go to the earth’s end for myself and my family. To say the Charolais breed is special to me would be a vast understatement. I became hooked on the breed for many reasons, but that first Junior National did me in. My goals of becoming active in the junior program and having success in the show ring seemed farfetched, but with some luck and hard work 10 years later, I’m fortunate to say I’ve exceeded my 12-year-old self ’s dreams. Though my time in the junior scene is closing, I’ve only scratched the surface on what I hope to do, not only for myself within the breed, but what I hope to help my sister’s accomplish in theirs as well.

I was the youngest, so Cagney and Chesney got first pick of the heifers that year. I got the leftovers and that was my first Simmental. After a few years of attending other breed junior nationals and Simmental regional shows, I finally got to show at my first Simmental junior national in 2018. A fun filled week with close friends was topped off by being named Champion Percentage Female. I spent my whole summer in the barn and achieving this accomplishment made me realize that hard work pays off. I have learned many lessons from showing cattle. I have learned leadership, teamwork, and to work hard for your dreams. I have big dreams that I want to achieve, and I must work hard to accomplish them. It takes a Village. With each of the girls having their breed and passion for Jr. Nationals, it has created some challenges throughout the summers. 2014 was the first year that we tackled going to two Junior Nationals at once. This is where our village comes in. We sent Cagney with a great crew to Charolais Jr. Nationals while the
rest of us headed to Louisville for Simmental Junior Nationals. Cagney flew into Louisville from Wichita, and once everyone was together again, we began setting up, and we watched a heifer we raised win Hereford Junior Nationals via livestream. Since that summer, we have attended at least 2 Junior Nationals every summer, and some years all 3! We have been blessed with some amazing people who are always willing to help us out. We are certainly a fan of technology, being able to watch the girls achieve some of their greatest accomplishments from another Junior National is awesome. There is an unending list of family members, operations, and pieces of livestock that we salute our success to. One thing that we are confident in, is that our undevoted dedication and passion for what we do has brought us to where we are today. Village, Army, Crew, Friends, Family; whatever you want to call them we’ve got the best one! Thank you to The ShowTimes for asking us to share our story. •

his COVID-19 epidemic has taken a lot from all of us. Specifically for Oliver spring baseball, birthday parties, seeing friends and Michigan Beef Expo to show his cattle. And he is left wondering if all the fun things planned for summer will happen. The biggest of these is most Fair, his first! Oliver came in from the barn with an idea for Randy and myself. He thought maybe he should take Batman to be butchered and donate the meat to families in need. We whole-heartedly agreed that that was a great idea. Batman is Oliver’s first steer. He was born on our farm. Oliver took him to Louisville in the show at NAILE. He spends countless hours in the barn washing, brushing and practicing showing. You don’t ever forget your first steer! He asked Joshua Kastel from Kastel Slaughterhouse in Riga - if he would help make this happen. Kastel’s not only donated the processing, they taught Oliver to grind the burger and wrap it! Thank you guys! Last week Oliver delivered close to 400lbs of hamburger to help feed families in our community. While COVID has taken a lot from Oliver, it has also given to him! It has taught him selflessness, to give what you can because we all have something to give and to be proud of yourself!!! Randy and I couldn’t be more proud! • - Tessie Hill, Oliver’s Mom

Who helped... Randy and Tessie Hill, parents, and sister, Paige (age 6). As a family we supported his decision to donate the steer. As a family we work together to feed, care for and get the show animals ready for shows. Kastel Slaughterhouse, Riga, Michigan donated the processing of the steer. In addition to the processing they allowed Oliver to word side-by-side with them to learn how to grind and package the burger. Josh Kastel, is not only the owner of Kastel Slaughterhouse, but is also the mentor of Oliver for his show steers and heifers. Other 4-H Projects... Market Hogs Other hobbies and interests... Playing baseball and football, raising meat chickens and having a few laying hens for eggs.

Oliver is also very involved in helping us with our Annual Sale and can be seen sale weekend talking to guests and customers about all the calves with his “Uncle Josh.” He helps wash, blow, feed, sort them into lots and greet the guests. He is a super kid and we love him endlessly •

There is a division for “refurbished” items. These items must be used for intended purposed ot be entered in refurbished. (ex: refurbishing a lamp to still use as a lamp.)
Product cooked will be the same for all teams. This year’s choice of meat will be wholesale cut “tri-tip.” Each test will have 5 additional questions that are only used for breaking ties. They will not be used for grading of the test.
GRAPHIC DESIGN CONTEST
All entries must be emailed by June 1 to contests@shorthorn.org. Entries will not be accepted at NJSS. Entries must be 8.5x11 to fit Shorthorn Country Guidelines. (Live Print Area is 7.485" x 9.833")
HERDSMAN QUIZ BOWL CONTEST
If you buzz-in before question is complete you will not get rest of question or answers. They have 10 seconds to answer. Answers are final by supervising ASA staff or ASA board.
Contest age divisions (as of January 1, 2020) : Prospector I: 5 to 9 years Prospector II: 10 to 12 years Intermediate: 13 to 16 years Senior: 17 to 21 years If any individual participates in a “team” contest with someone of a different age division, the team must participate in the oldest contestant’s age division unless the contest rules don't allow competing in a different age division. For showmanship, the Prospector I age division matches show rules (must be 7).

Prepared Speaking Senior Division Topic: How do you explain to the consumer the sustainability in the beef industry and cattle impact on the environment? Intermediate Division Topic: How do you convince someone to eat beef compated to meatless options? PII Topic: What are some unusual beef by-products you use? PI Topic: Why Shorthorns? Extemporaneous Speech Contest (Senior Division only)
STATE BASKET CONTEST
Each basket will be auctioned off in a silent auction. ½ of the proceeds will be given to the state that created the basket the other ½ will be given to the AJSA.
STATE COOK-OFF
States will participate in the state cook-off contest to win points for outstanding state. This will take place outside similar to a tailgate.
TEAM FITTING CONTEST
The contest is suggested to include 4 classes (8 min. per class, 10 minutes for questions classes). There will be 10 questions.
A team shall consist of three persons, of any sex and from any state combination. Points will be awarded towards individual high point awards, no points will be awarded towards the Outstanding State Group Award.

Senior Division: The senior team salesmanship topic will be new! Senior competitors will present their Shorthorn business plan to the bank to receive a loan. This senior team will come prepared to this competition (no scenario given as in past) and they will base their plan on them just graduating college with $500, 10 cows and owning no land. Intermediate Division: The team shall consist of two juniors, the team will be selling any “Westway Feeds Product” Prospector Division I & Division II: The team will bring an animal to the competition area and will present, promote and “sell” the entry to the judging panel.

rowing up I can remember as the school year came to a close my classmates would talk about where they would be going on summer vacation. I did not have plans for a typical vacation, instead I was planning to attend the National Junior MaineAnjou show somewhere in the country. My summer vacations have always been at the Junior Nationals! Attending Junior Nationals, I have had the opportunity to see many cities and beautiful sites all over the United States with my family. Taking part in the Maine-Anjou Junior Nationals is a family tradition. The best we can remember our family has been attending the National Junior Maine-Anjou show since 1989 and we have not missed one since! My Aunt, Lynda Blakley Runner was the first member in our family to show Maine-Anjou cattle. She served as the American Maine-
Anjou Queen in 1992, and for our family it has been a whirlwind ever since! Our grandparents Vincent and Nancy Blakley took their children and then their grandchildren all over the country to show Maine-Anjou cattle at the Junior Nationals. They understood the important life skills that Junior Nationals instills in its AJMAA members. We have had three national junior board members, Lyndsey Blakley, Rashele Blakley and Reighly Blakley Hendrix. All three of us enjoyed serving on the junior board and developing lifelong friendships. For me personally I met and served with people who are now some of my dearest friends. Some of the memories we look back and laugh about are the water fights that normally happen after the fitting contest and those years when our goofy uncle dressed up for adult showmanship. But, one of the most unforgettable Junior Nationals for our family was in Spencer, Iowa

We have had the opportunity to exhibit numerous division champions, bred and owned champions in the
ring and many contest winners. In 2012, I had the privilege to receive the first Herdsman scholarship and in 2017 my sister, Reighly also received a Herdsman scholarship. At the 2015 National Junior show Reighly was selected as both the premier exhibitor and premier breeder. Sadly, this was the last Junior Nationals my grandpa Vincent was able to attend. When it comes to showing Maine-Anjou it is truly a family affair for us. My cousins Blake Runner, Bailie Runner, Neecey Blakley and Hunter Blakley have all shown and participated in
contest at the Junior Nationals, and experienced success both in and out of the showring. However, the most precious memories we have and I am sure we will continue to make is the time we spend together as a family, the friends we are reunited with and the new friendships that we create at Junior Nationals each year. Ribbons fade, trophies gather dust, but the friendships and memories made last a lifetime. There is no family like the Maine family! •

in 2011 when my cousin was born on show day, Hunter Blakley came six weeks early, he is Lyndsey’s next to youngest. In 2016 Hunter showed his first Maine-Anjou in Grand Island, Nebraska. Larahmy is the youngest Blakley that is still showing MaineAnjou cattle. His favorite part about Junior Nationals is making new friends from all over the country and getting to see them every year!

Anjou and Shorthorn breeds. Around this same time, one of the all-time career highlights for Cagwin occurred when Kenmar Ransom 32Z, known to many as “Tank,” claimed three victories at the International Livestock Exhibition in Chicago, American Royal in Kansas City, and the National Western Stock Show in Denver. In 1973, Don moved for the final time to settle in Virginia, Illinois where he and wife, Kathleen, originated Cagwin Farms, a purebred Shorthorn seed stock operation. For several years, Cagwin’s production sale was known as the “place to be” Labor Day weekend. Additionally, Cagwin is credited for importing the first Maine Anjou into the United States as well as the first Irish Shorthorns. In 1993, Cagwin took over as Publisher of the Shorthorn Country breed publication. Don’s impact to the Shorthorn breed has been recognized through honors such as the 2012 Builder of the Breed, 2012 Livestock Marketeers Hall Of Fame Inductee, and 2014 Shorthorn

The Legacy Begins Don Cagwin was born in 1939, in Lockport, Illinois. Cagwin quickly found a passion for agriculture and business as he was raised on a livestock farm and exhibited cattle nationally through Illinois 4-H and FFA. His hard work yielded championships at several national shows including the American Royal, Chicago International, National Western, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. Following several busy years establishing himself throughout the cattle industry, Don married his wife, Kathleen in the year 1960. In 1963, Cagwin became manager of the Royal Tartan Shorthorn Farm at Lemont, Illinois. From 1965 to 1968 Cagwin worked for the American Shorthorn Association as the Eastern Fieldman. In 1968, Cagwin moved his family south to take over Questing Hills Shorthorn Farm in Chandlerville, Illinois. Cagwin Cattle Services, Inc. was started in 1971 as a sales management firm for the Maine

The Legacy Today Together, Don and Kathleen raised three children who are still major contributors to the livestock industry. Daughter, Cindy, works for the Shorthorn Country and takes professional livestock photos at shows across the nation. Son, Jeff, raises Charolais cattle, is a hoof trimmer and bovine chiropractor. Daughter, Amanda, works as the Chief Financial Officer of Windsor Homes. She also serves as chief accountant for Shorthorn Country and Cagwin Farms. Cagwin’s legacy continues as publisher of the Shorthorn Country and provides an advertising outlet to Shorthorn breeders across the nation. Cagwin’s Brother-in-law, Darryl Rahn, and Cindy, serve the family operation as Advertising Representatives for Shorthorn Country. Darryl has worked alongside Don for nearly 40 years and is a mainstay in the family operation. Cagwin Farms continues to sell purebred Shorthorn cattle under the direction of herdsman , Kerry Johnston, and grandson, Dalton Johnston. At the 2019 Illinois State Fair, Cagwin Farms was awarded Shorthorn Plus Premier Herdsman Honor, represented by Dalton, a thirdgeneration Shorthorn breeder, and showman. The Legacy Lives On It is no secret that Cagwin has enjoyed many successes within the industry, but his legacy does not end there. Don and Kathleen have six grandchildren and one greatgrandchild: Brooke, Caseelynn, Dalton, Kylie, Ella, Jewel, and Brexton. The passion that Cagwin has for the Shorthorn breed and the livestock industry has not only been instilled with his children but continues to influence his grandchildren and their dedication to the continuation of his legacy. Throughout the years,
many things have changed, but one constant remains: Don Cagwin, and his family are still as passionate about the Shorthorn breed as ever.Cagwin is an industry leader and has never been afraid to travel to the turn of his own drum. When asked what the Shorthorn breed means to him, Cagwin commented “I can tell you that the Shorthorn breed is everything to me. Shorthorn cattle have been my whole life. They’ve paid the bills, raised a family, and bought a farm. I couldn’t ask for anything more than that, one way or another, it’s always been Shorthorns.” •

The American Angus Association continues to monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19 and the National Junior Angus Show. The health and well-being of our Angus Family is our highest priority. Over the next few weeks, staff will continue to monitor the reopening of Pennsylvania and the status of the facility to host the National Junior Angus Show in Harrisburg, PA on July 5-11, 2020. We are exploring different options and scenarios including what can still be done in person, what can be done virtually and what we cannot accomplish without compromising social distancing guidelines.
No Fit Show: This will be a “Blow and Go” show. Grooming or fitting with foreign material that includes (but not limited to) painting, powdering, oiling, artificial coloring, or adhesives is prohibited. Non-aerosol sheen is allowed. Going to this format will
Ring side spectators: Ring side seats will be limited. Spectators will be encouraged to watch the show via webcasted screens throughout the grounds or online.
What we know will be modified to virtual events:
Opening Ceremonies: Will be webcast instead of in-person. Closing Ceremonies: Will be webcast instead of in-person. Public Speaking: Contest will be held virtually prior to NJAS, similar to the photography, graphic design and creative writing contests. More information to follow on the NJAS website. Career Development: Contest will be held virtually prior to NJAS. More information will follow.

From 1967 until 1973 the National Showmanship Contest was held in conjunction with the American Angus Breeders’ Futurity in Kentucky. In 1974 it was moved from that event to be held in conjunction with the National Junior Heifer Show.
Carcass show: Beef processing facilities across the country are operating at limited capacity. Consequently, we are not able to hold the carcass show in 2020. Team Fitting Contest: Social distancing guidelines cannot be followed during the close nature of working together for team fitting. Judging Contest: Due to social distancing. Junior Social: Due to social distancing. Tailgate: Due to social distancing. Be watching the NJAS website for rule changes and deadline changes as they become available. We will make any announcements as quickly as we can to allow appropriate time for families to adjust their plans.

oots run deep in Modesto, California beginning with my grandparents, Jim & Sue Coleman to the Angus industry over five decades of involvement. In the 1980’s both my uncle Ted and my dad, Tim Coleman travelled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to compete at Angus Jr Nationals. My dad still talks about his reserve division honor, and my brother, Tyler used to wear his buckle when he was little. Tyler has always loved cows from the time he was little, which played a huge influence on my family’s personal involvement and our future in the showring. As my parents saw that our interests grew competitively, my dad who once dispersed his purebred angus herd began purchasing Angus show heifers for Tyler and I. On our travels each summer to the National Junior Angus Show from California, it’s a road trip that we
have learned to endure, for we never find a reason to second guess it. It always comes down to who will drive out in the rig and who will fly in. As anyone could imagine my brother and I were always the ones to instantly tell my parents that we wanted to drive, whether one of us gets the whole backseat to ourselves or were shoulder to shoulder packed in like sardines and prepared for a 20+ hour drive. Tyler and I have always wanted the full experience, for we would rather be fully invested instead of only halfway. From riding in the truck from one Jr. Nationals to the next we were able to gain some memories and learned skills we wouldn’t have been able to learn if we flew each year. In 2015, it was the year of flat tires, for on our way back from Hereford Jr. Nationals we encountered a flat tire then hurried home for a quick turn-around to head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for Angus Junior Nationals. We didn’t just encounter another flat, but after a deadly heat wave that week and finally heading
home we encountered our third flat. Needless to say, we learned to change a tire in record time and didn’t let it slow us down one bit because this was the one show we were fully invested in for the summer. Many don’t comprehend the decisions and sacrifices that California juniors have to face that most other juniors across the country don’t have to decide on.

Unfortunately, our county fair and California State Fair are run concurrently taking place during the same time as the Angus Junior Nationals each year. For many years we wanted to be involved and participate at our county fair where we began to do well, as for State Fair only Tyler had the opportunity to show at the State level in 2010. From there, my parents sat us down one night asking if we would want to show at the national level by participating at the next National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City, MO . After our first junior national, where we maintained a temporary residence at the Sheraton Hotel downtown Missouri of three weeks, while each junior national took place we unlocked the next chapter of our lives. My brother and I were strangers to Junior Nationals and only knew a few of the other California Juniors at the beginning of the week, however seven days later we had both made friends from coast to coast that till this day we are very close with. For myself, a young girl beginning her show career having the opportunity to watch and witness two of my biggest role models (Sydney Schnoor and Shayne Meyers) win that Angus Junior Nationals inspired me to step up to the plate and set goals for myself. Tyler’s competitive drive only grew for success in and out of the showring and found his other passion for fitting, where Andrew Foster took him under his wing to give him the lowdown. Succeeding this experience of a lifetime, for a couple of kids from
California - my brother and I never thought twice about missing another Jr. National even if it meant missing our County and State Fair. So for the Coleman Family, Angus Junior Nationals is our only show of the summer. •

ver the last few years, people have been tagging me as the “Red Angus Guy” but, it’s that and so much more. But to understand where I’m at now you have to go way back to my beginnings. Born and raised on a ranch in Northwest Kansas the heart of cow country, I’ve been involved from day one. For my whole life we’ve had Angus and Charolais cattle and only very recently has Red Angus even stepped foot on the ranch. Starting in 2014, the influx of Red Angus to the ranch had started and thanks to a few core breeders I was competitive from the start. My First NAJRAE was that summer and the spark had been ignited for the breed. Though I was involved, I was more focused on the showing aspect of the Event and not as much on the career development events. There were a few Junior Board members that
took me under their wing and without knowing it I went from unpolished and unknowing to well on my way to being in their shoes in the years to come. The group that I have to thank for the first step towards the Jr. Board was the 2014 NAJRAE Directors. Moving forward a few years, I was attending NAJRAE every year along with about 2 other Junior Nationals depending on the year. At times it was very stressful and it seemed like very long summers (though most would think summers are short), we got through it and while I was away at NAJRAE my family was at home working on stock for upcoming nationals. At these early events though I wasn’t alone and I had what some would call a second mom in Meghan Hoffman. She kept me on course and thoroughly involved knowing that one of my goals was to be on the board. Fast forward to 2018 and the year I finally tested the waters to run for

the board. I had a few very good friends that had got on the year before so I knew that now was my chance to make a very big splash. I went through the week and I was fortunate to join the 2018-20 Jr. Board. At our fall meeting a few months later I soon got my first taste of action with the rest of the board, and we sure hit the ground running. Over the last 4-5 years we have seen immense growth in exhibitors and cattle, making for a very proud group in leadership. Last summer I was blessed to become our board president, opening doors for later in life. Though these positions are great for change, I have found that while you must challenge the status quo, it is also important to utilize what still works. I have learned over the last few months to embrace change while staying true to our beginnings as an organization and keeping an eye on the growth for years to come. •

We are taught to find the blessings in hard times even though it may be difficult. There is a bigger picture than what our calendar looks like in the weeks and months ahead. The more we focus on God and the less we focus on ourselves, the easier it is to find the blessings that we have. Slowing down has given us more time to pray, more time to appreciate the blessings we have, and more time to let the Spirit lead us if we will listen. The sooner we remember that God is in charge and trust Him, the better off we will be. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. We are not meant to understand everything that is happening in the
world right now. The part that I am struggling the most with personally, is knowing what to do about it. There are all kinds of Bible verses about being patient, trusting God, and having faith. At the same time, we don’t just want to do nothing while we see so many people struggling in the agriculture world right now. It’s hard to do nothing when we feel like the government is dictating so many things in our great country that is supposed to have more freedom than any other country in the world. We know there is evil and corruption in the world, so how do we just sit back and watch, and how can one single individual really make a difference when the problems right now are so overwhelming?
We must first trust in God and pray hard, then we must listen, and then finally, act. If Noah would not have taken action, he wouldn’t have built the ark, and if King David wouldn’t have taken action, he wouldn’t have killed Goliath. So please, have a positive attitude, listen to God and do what you can. •

The Bible tells us in Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know
that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

think its safe to say that over the last few months, we have all had a major interruption in our plans. For the first time in years, my calendar is not marked up to be somewhere every weekend for the next three or four months. Shows that have taken place for years have been canceled. We have intensely felt the impact on the livestock industry. My heart goes out to all the seniors that did not get that last show opportunity. My heart goes out to the dairy farmers dumping their milk on the ground. My heart goes out to the pork producers that have no where to go with their product, and the beef producers that are dealing with falling prices. We are facing tough times throughout the country.

his past March after Houston canceled, Laurie told me that now was a good time to work on graphics that I wouldn’t normally have the time to. I agreed and started working on our 2020 State Fair Edition cover and marketing. I’ve had an idea I wanted to try for our August State Fair Edition for a few years, but never had the time to actually do it. This past Spring I was able to design all of the 3D neon lettering and effects for our State Fair Edition Ad found in this issue. It is without question my favorite design I’ve worked on to date! I can’t wait for everyone to see our State Fair Cover later this Summer! I think many people we’re told to stay at home and looked at it as an opportunity to watch movies and kick back. We took it as an opportunity to
better our company and make plans for later this year. We have some cool announcements coming soon as well as later this year that we can’t wait to share with you! It has actually been a crazy busy Spring at The Showtimes. From our Virtual Graduation Ceremony, making banners and cutouts, working on the issue you are reading and a big project that we will share soon, it’s been a year unlike any other! After our best Denver and Fort Worth to date, we can’t wait to cover our next show! We have big plans for the remainder of 2020 and look forward to seeing everyone.
