I n t e rv i e w w i t h D a n n y K i r a n o s a.k .a. A m i g o T h e D ev i l SIGT: You have such an energy when you perform and you're such a powerful performer. What happens when you take the stage? Where do you go? ATD: I don't think I go anywhere. To be honest, I think I very much stay put and just try to enjoy that moment as much as possible. I think it's embracing the moment, more than escaping it.

6

SIGT: At WTR 2019, I think your set was cut short because of the weather that day? ATD: Yeah. Which is really funny, because we went straight from the stage to a plane that day... we played Mexico City the next day. Then the day after that, we played Chicago! That was one of the wildest weekends of my life. SIGT: Your album, Everything is Fine, came out in 2018. This was the first major release for you, and things just kind of went crazy after that. What was it like becoming a full time touring musician and business owner to everything coming to a halt in 2020, as the world refrained? ATD: If you ignore all the terrible things that happened to so many people, and if you ignore the fact it was an actual global pandemic causing it all, there was a lot of time to sit down and think that I would have never given myself. I had a lot of time to essentially re-establish myself as a human, above being this Amigo thing, that I would have never given myself otherwise. It's so hard to say it because obviously so much horrible shit surrounded it. Like tons of people died, businesses went to hell, and we realized how hopeless a lot of the systems that we rely on really are. So if you ignore all of that, for me personally, I think there was a reset that I was never going to give myself. So, I guess that's the whole "silver lining" concept.

“ I h a d a lot o f t i m e to ess en t i a lly r e -e sta b li s h m ys elf as a h u m a n.” SIGT: I know Florida means a whole lot to you. Where did you start your journey performing music in Florida? ATD: I guess really all the way back to Miami when I was like 15, 14, playing shows in a bunch of bands— we would do little tours of Florida. Amigo started way later. Amigo didn't actually start in Florida at all, which is funny. When I moved up to San Francisco, that's when I started Amigo. I'm always going to miss Florida. I miss people, and I miss friends, and I miss moments and memories, but I've never been like, "stick-to-one place." Florida is always going to be amazing to me. It's always going to feel like home— I just don't have the necessity to be where I feel "at home." But I am stoked

to be coming back. I know Rockville is a really good time— all the Wimmer festivals have always been a really good time. I'm sad we don't get to play Orlando or Tampa, but we'll make that happen again. SIGT: Earlier this year, you released Born Against, through your own label, Liar's Club. Was this your first official release on Liar's Club? ATD: Yes! First official record on Liar's Club. I think it was more of just the next step for me [starting a record label]. We've been working with Tejon Street Corner Thieves, who are one of my favorite live shows; they genuinely are a giant ball of energy. They're hilarious, great musicians, great songwriters— it's fucking awesome. SIGT: Which artists on the Rockville 2021 line up are you looking forward to seeing the most? ATD: There are quite a few actually. But, I've never seen Metallica. I'm really excited to finally see Metallica. SIGT: I am too. And that Blacklist album— the cover album they just released— have you listened to that? I mean, it's a big fucking listen. It's like 59 songs, but just pick and choose the ones you want to start with. Like, PUP covers a song. IDLES covers a song. Fucking Jason Isbell... ATD: That's nuts. I heard the Isbell one. I fucking love IDLES too. SIGT: There's a bunch of stuff in Spanish, too. You don't speak Spanish, do you? ATD: Yeah! SIGT: We should have done this interview in Spanish... ATD: Si, gracias a ti.

SIGT: Congratulations on 40 years of Anthrax! If you could summarize these last 40 years, what would you say about your life, playing with Anthrax? CB: The thing about being in the band is to always have that awareness of never taking it for granted. It is a lot of work. And I mean, we made sacrifices along the way because of it, but never once did I really take it for granted; it's given me my life and I still enjoy it. And the best part about it is I still get to create music, and there's never a shortage of that! I'm just so happy that it still comes, I still get excited about it, and the well hasn't gone dry. With any career there are going to be peaks and valleys. But it's knowing that you're going to reach those highs again, and you just have to be patient; you just have to do what you do! I think a lot of bands lose focus when they see that happening. Kind of like, "oh, fuck, I'm losing the race." But I never felt that it was a race, you know what I mean? It's always been a marathon, basically— that's such a cliché way of putting it— but you can't let those things distract you from doing you. I still appreciate our fans all over the world purchasing a hard copy of something that I made, myself. I worked really hard for it, and I want you to have that experience of opening something and reading along with everything, even smelling it, instead of streaming it on your phone. I still enjoy things like Record Store Day; it brings people out, puts people in the mom & pop stores! I'm still grateful for things like Barnes & Noble for having a vinyl section, even Walmart has it now— and Target! I think it's such a great thing.

10

SIGT: Rockville is kind of the cherry-on-top at the end of your tour this year, yeah? CB: Well, you know, the thing about those DWP Festivals is they're really jam packed. And I feel like, from a fan’s point of view, you're getting such an amazing lineup of bands. Each day is packed, it's just amazing! You know, back in the day, we would always wish that America would get on it because the European festivals are so amazing and we always felt somewhat, I dunno… just kind of cheated. We've been doing those festivals over there since the '80s and it's evolved into something way bigger now. And I'm so happy that finally here we have these now. It's amazing and I really appreciate them doing it!

SIGT: I want to talk to you about your new record, Silver Linings. You can feel the fun and the love in those jams. How did you ease into creating this album? CB: The way this record was created was— it wasn't even thought of as a record. It was just kind of getting me through the pandemic. Not making me sink even deeper into a depressing funk. My girlfriend Carla [Harvey, Butcher Babies] was watching me glued to the TV and my phone about this pandemic. Like everybody else, we had questions that we weren't getting answers to. I was spiraling, you know... and I know a lot of other people had that feeling too. So, she's the one that said, "you have to stop and you have to shut this off and you need to go be creative again. Go do something." And that's what I did. This was around the time Neil Peart died [RIP]. I was really, really bummed out about that. And I started to just play [drums] again. I had this idea of doing a cover version of a Rush song. So I called up my friend Alex Skolnick [Testament] and Ra Diaz [Suicidal Tendencies] and we did a little Rush jam. It was so much fun. We put it out that people reacted to it. It just kind of snowballed. I started to think about things like when I was a kid, getting home from school, playing my drums with headphones on, and playing along to records. So that's what I started to do again. Then I called some other people who were going through the same situation as I was. And they were so happy to do it. The record company that put it out, Megaforce Records [since 1982], just wanted to do vinyl. I was cool with that! The thing I told everybody who is a part of each song [from DMC to Corey Taylor] was, for me, the most important thing is the attention to detail. Put a little bit of yourself, but please, let's try and stick to it the way it was, because that's the beauty of it— having it sound like the time it came from. I recorded most of it on my Roland kit. I would find isolated drum sounds from the original tracks or something off of the record it came from. I would get an isolated snare drum or kit drum or whatever, and then I put it into the Rol' and built a kit around that. So it would sound as if I was playing that kit. When everybody heard the tone, I think they were like, "oh, yeah, I gotta fucking kind of match that." SIGT: I know a lot of us were really stuck in this funk. And some of us still are. Would you have any humble advice for anybody who's still dealing with some of the darker elements of being in this depression that we were kicked into? CB: The thing that I said during the whole thing is, I was pushing myself to get out of that funk and use the time wisely. And I see a lot of people did not use the time to their benefit. I was so happy that I had a chance to work on music and art, two things that I love. I know sometimes things look very bleak, but what we need to do as Americans and as people is to start kinda loving each other again. Stop hating on the other guy's beliefs, or on the other guy's color, or on the other guy's sports team… we need some healing.

S CA N F O R FU LL I N T E RV I E W

And that's the thing about it in music—Music is such a universal healer. I wish people would get back into that whole love thing and stop hating each other. Find inspiration— I don't care who it is. I don't care if it's some seven year old kid on YouTube that inspires you to take your drums out today. Do something today. I think everybody needs a little tap on the shoulder some time that says, "hey, man, wake up! Life's g d: lovin r o w passing you by." s s pa

“Music is the one universal language we have that doesn't need explaining.”

SIGT: What's it feel like to be back on the road again? AJ: It feels good. My last big tour was in '17, and at that point, I was still an independent artist. As of now, I'm touring as one of the top rock artists in the country, so it's been a bit of a culture shock! I get those "pinch-yourself" moments, but it's wonderful, I've been loving it. SIGT: Do you still have the same touring band? AJ: No, I got a brand new band together the week before this tour started— a new dynamic, a new feel, but a lot of the same energy. First of all, they're all black; I know that's not a big deal to a lot of people, but for us, it's really important. We carry the torch of our ancestors. Secondly, we're all from different backgrounds of music, so coming together makes the music have this really great feel. Our energy is just off the charts. I’m working with a cat named Bobby Jimmy on the drums out of Memphis, Tennessee. Bob Lovelace is playing on the bass. And Matthew Jacquette is playing guitar, a good friend of mine— he's from Miami. SIGT: You were born in 1986. How do you think growing up in the '90s primarily influenced you as a musician and as a human? AJ: The '90s were kind of a golden era for a lot of things. We were one of the last generations to experience a surplus in US finance. So we experienced a golden era of video games, music, television, a lot of different things that many kids today will never really know. And I think that really influenced the way that I heard music. Especially in ‘90s music— Nirvana, RUN D.M.C., Public Enemy, Dr. Dre, and Eminem— all these cats came out and really shaped the way music was to be heard in the future. That influenced me as a guitar player and as a kid who just loves music. SIGT: You first picked up the guitar at age 13 when you were inspired by Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughan. You've got so many influences, from Janelle Monáe to Nirvana to Hendrix... is there anybody that you're into now that you're super stoked on? AJ: The women rockers, man. Lizzy Hale of Halestorm and Taylor Momsen of Pretty Reckless, Dorothy, etc. I've really been getting into the women rockers right now. There really is a charge from them bringing music back to some classic rock era. They are the women/people doing it. Those have been the cats I've really put my ear down and listened to. I stay in contact with those ladies and I always look forward to seeing them. They're filled with nothing but love and they're cheerleaders for everyone around them, too. They're beautiful people, inside and out.

SIGT: Many of us didn't have it easy growing up. Some of us become really anchored down by our past. However, you've turned a lot of the challenges you faced into a successful career and into a life. Do you have any advice for kids right now who are struggling? AJ: Find a constructive outlet to put that pain. Find a way to take that pain and turn it into building blocks for your future. That's the thing about tragedy and trauma, man— with the great dark energy that comes with those things, also comes an incredible power to morph and change into something that can be so positive for your life and others. That, for me, is what my tragedy was about, what my hardship was about, taking that, and, almost like an alchemist, changing into something reborn; brand new. You can inspire others. I can't tell you the feeling I get when I talk to fans whose lives were altered just because they listen to "Take Me Away," or they’re going through a hard time and that's what got them through the pandemic. It's so powerful to be able to do that because, for me, that was just a hard place to come from; such a hurtful place to come from. So if I could take it and turn it and transmorph it into something beautiful and positive to help lift people up, there's no reason that anybody else can't do it, too. There's nothing more fulfilling than the gift of giving. When you are able to turn your tragedy into a gift, there is no greater gift in the world. SIGT: It seems like when you perform it's straight from your heart. Music is your voice amplified. Why do you think music is such an important vehicle to communicate emotions? AJ: I think it's important because everything is vibrational, man. The universe vibrates, and music is the one universal language we have that doesn't need explaining. So I think that's really the key. Music is a transmitter for emotions and energies that sometimes we can't articulate with words. Music is a great way to speak to the world without knowing their native tongue. SIGT: Is there anything else you want to say to the fans at Rockville this year? AJ: Thank you for making me who I am. All of this— the festival, the music, everything— is pointless without the ears to hear it. The fans are the most important part of this journey and I appreciate you and I love you and I'm so grateful for you.

SIGT: I have a message for you from Nick of Joyous Wolf. He says, hello, and he loves you, and he wants to thank you for believing in them. And he said, seeing what you're doing makes his life worth living. BF: That's really nice. If you talk to him again, tell them I love him, and them, and can't wait to see them all again soon. SIGT: Dude, just text him! BF: I'll make you the middleman. SIGT: Congrats on the new release, This Is How The World Ends! Where did you guys write all these songs? BF: These songs were written all over the place. We got started a little bit before the pandemic kind of really hit. And then the first quarter of the album was written in the desert in California, where we were living at the time— California City, up past Palmdale. And then mid-pandemic, everyone just started to kind of up-and-leave California— we were done with LA. The final bit of the record was written and recorded in Nashville. The majority of it was done in a barn on Josh's farm. It was an experience. SIGT: This must have been a way different process from OK, I'M SICK! BF: It's extremely different. With OK, I'M SICK, we had a producer who we loved, and we had studio time booked. And that's always a bit constricting,

18

because you get in at 10:00 a.m. and you’ve got to be out by 10:00 p.m., because there's a studio staff and everything— they’ve got to go home. But with this album, there was a lot of being in the barn for two days straight and not going to sleep until 9:00 a.m.! Go to sleep whenever you feel like it and get started whenever you feel like it. There was just no pressure. And we didn't have a producer— it was done all by ourselves. So we got to make it exactly how we wanted to at exactly whatever time we wanted to. SIGT: Well, the magic truly shows on the album. It is such an amazing work of art, and the way that it speaks to you directly, just makes my hair stand. The lyrics especially— they're so honest and easy to connect to on a deeper level. When you're performing these live, is there a place that you guys all connect to? BF: The energy just comes out— I think it's because we're so closely and personally connected to these songs— it just comes out of us when we're on stage. When you see a crowd completely relate to your lyrics, screaming everything back at you, it can send you to the moon. It's awesome. SIGT: Any favorites you know people are going to lose their shit to when you hit the first note? BF: "Ghost" from OK I'M SICK. As soon as I start the intro on guitar, everyone kind of goes bonkers. Now I've noticed as soon as we go into "Stalker," from This Is How The World Ends, everyone knows it's going to get crazy, and they're going to start losing their minds. SIGT: Is there anything else that you want to say to the crazy Florida fans at Rockville this year? BF: Keep being fucking crazy. Don't let up at all. Get crazier! I'm just super excited to come back out and see everyone. Live music is amazing; let's keep it going!

SIGT: I don't know if Charlie [Charlie Benante of Anthrax] mentioned it, but when I talked to him, he credited you with so much sweet stuff, like helping him through the pandemic, helping him connect to his inner child and start playing drums for fun again, and helping him out of the funk that he was in. I believe some people are here to serve themselves, and some people are here to serve others, and it really feels to me that you're someone who's very giving and very kind and just here to serve your fellow humans. CH: Since I was a kid, I've been very empathetic. I've been very nurturing, which is strange, because I never wanted children or anything like that; that wasn't my thing. And I always thought that I wasn't a nurturer. But it turns out in the end, I totally am. It was so awesome to be able to create art together during the pandemic. We created art and music. It brings your relationship to a different level of intimacy. I think when you can create things together or just be in a shared space and create art side by side, it's a really beautiful thing. And I'm glad that we had the pandemic to give us that opportunity. It was an awful time for many people. And yes, we lost our main source of income. But we also found out what it meant to just kind of have our family life back. Neither of us have been home that much during the course of our relationship, and to be settled in a place together for a couple of years now— it has been such a gift.

SIGT: The value of that in itself is so much more than money could ever be. It's so wonderful. CH: 100%. Money will come back. Careers will come back. That stuff will come back. But what I've learned is the value of family; Charlie has a daughter, so I'm basically a step-mom now too! My life has changed immensely and it is so much fuller than I ever thought it could be. SIGT: I love that, that's wonderful to hear! Let's talk about your music career with Butcher Babies; you've had such an incredible music career, from Goliath to Lilith. Can we look forward to any new Butcher Babies music in the near future? CH: Yeah! We've been releasing a song every couple of months throughout the last year, and we have an album coming in 2022. There's no release date as of yet. We're just kind of letting each song have it's moment, which is really cool for us. In fact, today we're about to get a mix back for a song we've been so proud of. It's been really fun to let each song have its own little breath of life before a whole album comes out, because some songs always get lost in the shuffle when a whole album comes out.

SIGT: It's such a joy that you actually get to do that. And call the shots, doing it now independently with your band! CH: That was a scary change for us. We knew in our hearts it was the right thing to do if we wanted to take things to another level. We had been with Century Media since our first album. We love them, they gave us our first shot, but we wanted to go further than what we thought they could do for us at the time. It's always a leap of faith when you leave a company that's been great to you. You have to really believe in yourself! And I've been taking these leaps of faith my whole life, from the time I was 19 years old and decided I was going to move across the country from Detroit to LA to be a rock star. When Butcher Babies started to tour, I had just gotten my dream job as an embalmer at one of the biggest funeral homes in LA. So again, I had to take a leap of faith— do I take my dream day job, or do I get on that bus and go on tour and live my dream? I feel that when you put your heart into something you can't lose. That's what I've always done, and that's what we collectively did as a group when we decided to go independent, and it's been awesome. SIGT: Congratulations on always taking those leaps of faith, too! It's so important for us to do as humans, just to grow. You've got to be your biggest cheerleader and really just be humble about it and just keep going. CH: No one else is going to be your cheerleader if you're not going to be your own first! In fact, most people will tell you "no," even your greatest friends will tell you "no," because it scares them to think of you not being in their life. It frightens people when they see strength in others sometimes, or a drive that they don't have. It makes them envious. And they can't even explain why. But being an embalmer working in funeral homes, I really realized that life is so short, you never know when you're going to go. And the best thing that you can do for yourself is to live your life to the fullest every day. If there's something you want to do, you get off your ass and do it. SIGT: When those feelings come about and you see somebody else who has a different work ethic than you or a different level of energy, you're overtaken with some of these emotions or feelings. Sometimes you can't explain it because we're limited to a lexicon,

24

and this is our primary method of communication. Sometimes there aren't words for how you're feeling. CH: What I always tell people is when you were going to start something like a band that is a collective effort between a group of people, is that you need to find people who are like you, who share the same drive and who want the same thing and are willing to go the extra mile with you. Because that is so rare, even in a place like LA, where my bands all met, there's a lot of bands and a lot of people that want to be rock stars, but not a lot of people that want to put in the actual work, time, effort, years that it takes to be a successful musician, and then the heartache that goes along with it. There are not a lot of people that can hear the words "no" and not break down. Not a lot of people that can leave their families and leave everything they know and love to get in a van or a bus or an RV. SIGT: It's certainly a lifelong commitment. It's something that you have to want deep down in your soul. You're a licensed mortician, a grief counselor, an End of Life Dula— which I looked that up, and I love that— and you advocate for death positivity, which really encourages people to speak positively about death rather than negatively. CH: Death doesn't have to be the end of your dreams and hopes. I think that death exists so that we can "live" while we're here. If we were just open-ended and could go on forever, I can't even imagine the trouble that we'd get into. But it's a way for us to set goals. And again, I encourage people to truly “live” and not worry so much about the end— dying. Americans have made that really scary by kind of institutionalizing it— putting it behind closed hospital doors. Back in the day, grandparents would die in the home. You saw people age, you saw people getting sick and dying. The funerals were in the home. And I think that there was a lot more death positivity surrounding that because you saw the cycle of life. But nowadays it scares us so much. SIGT: It is very cold, whereas it’s really warm to be around family and friends in the comfort of your own home, watching somebody who you've loved your whole life, or somebody who raised you, pass.

CH: So my goal is to bring funerals back to the home. To make it okay to die at home, and to give people who are dying choices in that, and to make it a more peaceful situation for them. SIGT: That's so beautiful. It's a very unique way for you to give yourself to others and help your fellow humans. You're also an accomplished writer from comic books to novels. Do you have any plans to follow up Death and Other Dances? CH: I do. I've written about half of it. Hopefully the other half will come out soon! SIGT: Where do you get your inspiration? CH: I was a huge fan of Charles Bukowski. I still am, obviously. And I believe that writing from your own life experience is the most powerful thing that you can do. Not only is it cathartic for the individual— and it kind of helps straighten out your own thoughts and feelings on life— but people want to know that there's other people that feel the way that they do. If they know something is real and comes from your heart, your background, your stories, it gives them the strength to carry through. SIGT: It's that commonality that we all share which isn't often voiced. You embody many meanings of the word “artist”. In addition to being a writer, a musician, and a mortician, you're also a visual artist. You draw primarily sketches, and comic book illustrations. I checked out your art page on Instagram, Pretty Girls Do Ugly Things (@prettygirlsdouglythings), which is fucking rad. Let's talk about your art! CH: I've always been inspired by death in my artwork. I think that all my art tells a story about a girl who's spent half of her life in the death industry. I've been drawing since I was a kid. I fell in love with comic books at a young age, and that's all I really wanted to do with my life, write comic books and play metal music. I got my wish! SIGT: That's amazing! So many people just think and imagine, and then they never take those steps, like you were mentioning earlier, to actually bring those dreams to fruition. CH: Yeah, I just knew what I wanted as a kid, and I didn't have a great home life. I was abandoned by my dad at a young age, and I feel like I lived in kind of a fantasy world to help me cope with that. I lived in a world of

comics and music. So all those things have always been my best friend, my inspiration, and the things that I find solid comfort in even till this day. If I'm alone with a pad of paper and pencil, then I'm never lonely, never sad, never upset. I have that. And I think that's truly a gift to have something like that which allows you to be by yourself, but never alone. SIGT: You have such a bright, beautiful soul, and it wouldn't be there shining so bright without great struggle. And your journey is just so inspiring, not only to me but to many other humans around this rock that we're on. Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for people, especially younger girls who want to express their creativity through art or music? CH: Just to start doing it. It's an old cliche, but you are what you do every day. For me, I get up in the morning and I draw. Then I go play some music. And then I do some grief counseling. Get out there and hone your craft and keep believing in yourself! SIGT: You've hit several festivals so far on this run. What was it like watching the mosh pit explode at one of these bigger festivals, like Louder Than Life? CH: Oh god, they're the funnest! Seeing these kids scream the lyrics that Heidi and I wrote together back at us just filled me with so much gratitude. You can't not have an amazing time when you walk out to a sea of people who are just jumping and screaming and doing huge pits! These people bring all their energy to make sure they tear up the pit for us, too. Again, it's another moment that makes us just full of gratitude! SIGT: Is there anything else you'd like to say to the fans at Rockville this year? CH: I just can't wait to see you guys in the pit! Thank you so much for supporting us year after year after year. The reason these festivals keep calling us is because of you guys and the energy that you give us whenever we play one of these big shows. So thank you so much. You guys rock!

SIGT: Blöthar? Is that you? BLOthar: Hello, this is Blöthar. SIGT: This is Mitch from Shows I Go To. We’re doing an interview for the Welcome To Rockville Official Commemorative Guide, a publication exclusively available at the festival. Thank you for taking the time to do this, and for lowering yourself down to our human scum level to speak to us! B: I'm always happy to speak to someone who's calling from Florida. You know why? SIGT: Why? B: Because I like little tiny baby alligators. SIGT: Well, there's a lot of them here in Florida. Is that what you're most excited about? B: Oh, yeah. We're happy any time we get to be in Florida. Humans call it, "God's Waiting Room." SIGT: It's where America goes to die. B: It's where America goes to do really stupid things. SIGT: Much like a GWAR concert! B: That's right. SIGT: I must say, you've chosen a brilliant human slave in Mr. Michael Bishop, he's quite the academic. And I recently watched his Ted Talk where he talked about the human scum city in which he grew up: Richmond, Virginia. So, good choice! B: Well, thank you. SIGT: Let's start from the beginning for those who don’t know; when did you arrive on Earth?

38

B: I actually came here sometime after the other ScumDogs, but I was banished here, too. GWAR, as a group, were out in outer space participating as members of an elite fighting force known as the ScumDogs of the Universe. They made one too many blunders and were banished to what amounts in the universe to the "Eastern Front'' during World War II, which was "Earth." They had been here for some time and I arrived a little bit late. And there's actually a lot of ScumDogs that are frozen down under in the Antarctic, which is the fortress of GWAR. We just thaw them out as we need them. Blöthar heeded the call when Oderus passed ... into the next dimension. My home planet was actually a Viking planet, the World of Mist. I do miss the mist. SIGT: Do aliens like yourself sleep? B: Well, considering that I'm 40 million years old, I don't really need much sleep anymore. I've had enough sleep. I usually wake up around 4:30 in the morning and shuffle off to get the early bird special. SIGT: Do you prefer the elderly, the seniors? B: No, of course not. They're stringy and gross. They smell like peepee. SIGT: How about political leaders? How many political leaders have you eaten? B: Well, I mean, there's just a sort of endless parade of dipshits Trump, for instance, is the most famous Florida resident. I actually live in Sarasota, by the way. Blöthar moved from Antarctica to Sarasota, FL. I do karaoke with Brian Johnson all the time. It's great. I hang with Dick Vitale and all the professional

wrestlers. But I guess we were talking about Trump. He showed up in our shows all the time, right at the end. And we would kill him every single night and every single night he would regenerate. He's a tough one, man. I mean, you can't get rid of that guy. And then Biden recently— with GWAR being politically unbiased, or just politically stupid— we kill him, too. He showed up at the show in Chicago and he'll probably show up at Rockville. SIGT: I wonder how many political leaders are actually also aliens... B: You mean the weird lizard people idea? Yeah. That's all true. Everything that Marjorie Taylor Greene says is gospel. She's exactly right about everything. I want to live in a world where what Marjorie Taylor Greene believes is true. SIGT: So speaking of people of Earth, let's say one of us had a spaceship and we were trying to leave here. Do you have any advice for people who are wanting to leave earth? B: Well, I mean, you really have kind of a Gilligan's Island situation going on with GWAR. We're all making coconut bras and radios out of bamboo and it never works, right? We may get a little bit off of the island, but we're always going to get sucked right back on. So all I can say is keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. One day we'll get off of this freaking mudball, but then you'd have to cancel the show. Then instead of Gilligan's Island, you'd have a sort of I Dream of Genie situation. But GWAR will never die. And trying to "get off of the island" is really part of our shtick. So I don't know what we would do if we ever manage to "get off." SIGT: If we do manage to make it off the island, do you have any planets you would like to visit or any planets you recommend we visit? B: I mean, we've got warrants in a lot of them. So we have to really pick and choose. Scumdogia is a beautiful place. Risa, that's a good one— that's part of the Star Trek universe. But it is really a real place where a bunch of people with weird hair run around having sex.

SIGT: Sounds like Florida. Is that The Villages? B: Yes. That's absolutely perfect. That's where Ricardo Montalbán lives. SIGT: On what planet do you find a Spectral Moon Moose? Where you got your giant antlers and pelt. B: That was on The World Of Mist. The Spectral Moon Moose haunted Blöthar's dreams for many years. Eventually, I hunted him down and sort of Captain Ahab-ed him [Moby Dick]. Then he became my cloak of visibility— when I put it on, I can't not be seen. SIGT: So you have the cloak and the giant antlers from the Spectral Moon Moose. And of course, you have your mighty battle axe, and your impenetrable shield. Tell me about your main natural defense. B: The fact that I smell like a goat? Well, of course, my ability to lose my shit, as a Berserker— Berserk mode. I just sit around and take a lot of hallucinogenics and psych myself up, and I really become a different person in that situation. I've gone to a lot of therapy for it. SIGT: How many therapists have you eaten? B: A lot, man. Trying to get your rage under control and anger management for a Viking Berserker from space is a difficult job as a therapist. SIGT: Are there any artists on the Rockville lineup you are excited to see? B: The lineup is nutty. It sounds to me like Rockville is going to be where the party is this year. But I want Daytona wings. I want to find the source of Daytona wings. They have them at Hooters, which is my FAVORITE restaurant. At Hooters they have Daytona wings, which are just delicious. You know, everytime I ride down I-75 and see that Ocala sign, I imagine my retirement—living in a mobile home and scooping up little baby alligators with a tiny little net and selling them to tourists.

“I re-learned how to sing from the ground up, over the pandemic.”

SIGT: You have quite the reputation so far for wild, rowdy, "hair on fire" type performances, and there's a magic you seem to tap into when you take the stage. Where does the music take you when you hit that stage? NICK: My dad used to say— because he was a performer too— "When you go on stage you're not Clark Kent anymore, you gotta put on the Superman cape." It's like a switch. When it's time to go, I'm there. I give it my all every time. I was an athlete my whole life. I have that mentality when I go onstage. SIGT: Did you play hockey? NICK: No, I played basketball from age 4 to age 18. But I'm 5'10", so collegiate basketball wasn't really an option. I mean, it's a funny story. The last practice I had, I was set up for a shot, and there was a guy named Austin Payne who blocked it and sent it out of bounds. I remember I was just standing there, then I walked out of the gym and never went back. I called my dad and told him I was done with sports and wanted to try music. He told me it's going to be really hard. Yet here I am, still doing it. There have definitely been a lot of peaks and valleys but we're proud of what we've done. The new album is going to come out next year! SIGT: Let's talk about that new album. I know you released some singles recently; "Fearless" is a favorite of mine. "Odyssey" was released after the Mother Rebel EP. Are these songs going to also be featured on the full length? NICK: All new songs! Around July of 2020, we started writing. We went out to Joshua Tree National Park and stayed out there in the desert, and did nothing but write. All we had was each other and time. I re-learned how to sing from the ground up, over the pandemic, with the help of my vocal instructor, Melissa Cross. Results have been extremely favorable to me. As far as record writing, it's the best stuff we've ever made. It's truly the introduction of what we're going to be capable of going forward. That's something that we all believe in as a quartet— it has to be better. It has to bring something that we haven't brought before! SIGT: Who are you stoked to see live at Rockville this year? NICK: I just saw Metallica; it was really cool to experience that. I'm looking forward to seeing so many great ones! Our buddies in Goodbye June are going to be there, BRKN Love will be there; Justin and I are tight. Definitely the guys in Badflower—

they’re our ride-or-dies— seeing what they're doing just makes life worth living. They gave us our very first show in LA. They gave us the ability to really believe in something beyond what we thought was real. And we wouldn't be where we are now without them. SIGT: I've got a crazy one for you. If you could pick five artists dead or alive— bands or artists— to perform at your funeral, like a celebration of life, who would they be? NICK: I wouldn't feel worthy of any of them to play at my funeral! But I have to say, The Who. They're my favorite rock band. If there was a theme song to my life, it would be "The Seeker" by The Who. "I won't get to get what I'm after ‘til the day I die." Chris Cornell in any format— he’s my hero, such a prolific figure in my life. Jeff Buckley, who's right there with him. Those two guys honestly fit me more than anyone. Joy Division— Ian Curtis. I suffered from epilepsy growing up as a kid. So when I found out that he and Joe Cocker also did, it made it feel a little less weird. Honestly, you know what, the last one is like a three piece because it's Ray Charles, and then his two best students, Joe Cocker and Van Morrison. That's my Super Friends of music that I just can't live without. The day Chris Cornell passed— I remember that day was like how everyone always talks about when Elvis died or how they felt with Michael Jackson passing. That hit me harder than I honestly could have thought because he was such a force in my musical lexicon. We ended up playing those same festivals the following year, and we were thinking about that. I remember when we played Rock On The Range, we dedicated the set to him because he meant so much to us in so many ways. I always used to tell people all I wanted in my life was to just get a thumbs up from a handful of people— Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Roger Daltry, Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Star. If I get a thumbs up for one of those guys... or Mick Jagger. I always have this joke that if Mick Jagger ever gets to see me play, and I walk offstage, the first thing I'm going to tell him is, "You can hang it up, man. I'll take it from here."

SIGT: Spiritbox is a phoenix blooming. You had a realization in your previous band, IWrestedABearOnce, where you saw no future. So you and your husband, Michael Stringer, started making your own music. How does it feel to live your truth and take the reins? COURTNEY: It just feels like something we were compelled to do, and people enjoying it happens to be an amazing side effect; but it’s something we would do, regardless. I just can’t help it, we love writing our own music! SIGT: Do you have any advice for someone who’s in a dead-end job or situation, and looking for an exit? C: Stop stalling. Put all your time and effort into what you actually want to do, along with your disposable income. Obviously, it’s important that if you have other people who rely on you to provide for them— children, etc.— they should always be your first priority. But if you have the privilege of being your

own first priority, then stop wasting time and stop waiting for perfect conditions.

SIGT: Speaking existentially, where do you think our spirits go once they exit their proverbial box?

SIGT: Your debut album, Eternal Blue, has exploded onto the scene. From taking over SiriusXM Liquid Metal, to the Kerrang! Magazine cover. With readers voting you “Best New Band,” you’ve taken the rock & metal world by storm. First, congratulations on the success of this brilliant album! Now that you’ve finally had the opportunity to perform some of these live, how has the response been?

C: I still don’t know. Sometimes thinking we just cease to exist sounds terrifying, sometimes that feels comforting. I don’t think I’ll know what I want it to be till I’m old, tired, and wise. Right now, thinking of just ceasing to exist sounds awful, and I hope that everyone continues on somehow after our bodies are gone. But maybe THAT would be awful. I don’t know!

C: Funny enough, the first few times we performed, we didn’t have any crowd facing mics, and we are on an IEM system so we can’t hear much of the outside world without those crowd mics. So later on, when I watched footage of the crowd, I was shocked to hear many people singing along with me. Absolutely shocked.

SIGT: Anything else you want to say to the fans at Rockville this year? C: We are so honoured to play for you, thank you for giving us a chance.

Interview with Paulina “Pau” Villarreal, drums+vocals for The Warning (Mexico) SIGT: Your new EP, Mayday, is produced by David Bendez, who did Paramore, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, etc. How was recording with him? TW: Recording with David was awesome! It was actually pretty nerve-wracking, because we had never worked with David before, but we met each other through Zoom and we vibed; it was good! Meeting him in-person for the first time was pretty scary, but David is a sweetheart and he’s such an organized and creative person, so it was a really good experience. I feel like it was an experience where we all grew so much as musicians, and it really reflects on this new upcoming material. It was also our first time working with a producer who speaks English, so that was pretty weird, but fun! SIGT: You sing while playing the drums? TW: Definitely. I started playing the drums when I was around 6 years old. I started playing because my parents bought us the video game Rock Band, and I would play it all the time, specifically the drums. My dad then saw I had really good coordination, and he said “Hey, do you wanna try doing this, playing the drums, for real?” I was super hyped for it and I said, “Of course!” So I started lessons and immediately fell in love with it. I vividly remember one of the first things my drum teacher taught me was how to sing while playing. It was for coordination so I could learn not only how to separate my limbs and do something different with each one of them, but also have my body really concentrated on doing something that is very physically demanding. I started doing this when I was very young, just for the sake of coordination. Whenever I learned a cover song, I would always sing it while playing because it was something that came really naturally. When we started doing our own music, I started writing some of the songs on the piano, and I was very inclined to sing, and I really wanted to do it! But it's only when we started playing live that I began training myself and my body to endure that type of cardio, and still be able to breathe correctly for singing. It has taken a lot of practice, but it's such a fun thing to do— to be able to play and sing live. SIGT: Is there a message would you like to leave behind for girls who are looking to break into the music scene?

54

TW: Most definitely, don’t give up. It is sometimes very tempting to give up when you are starting out; it’s a lot of hard work and a lot of practice. You have to be very disciplined to be able to do it, and have a goal in mind, and never lose sight of that goal and constantly work hard. Surround yourself with people who care— who you think you are able to work with correctly and communicate with— because I feel like that makes the biggest difference when working in music in general. More than anything, don’t give up, it can be a bit hard but perseverance is the key! SIGT: Congratulations on becoming a part of The Metallica Blacklist album! It's so cool you launched your band with a Metallica cover of “Enter Sandman,” and now you are on an official Metallica release! TW: Thank you! It was such a full circle moment, and an insane experience. Not only doing it as The Warning, but alongside Alessia Cara, was an amazing experience overall. To be at the same festival, performing on the same day, is insane! SIGT: Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans at Rockville? TW: First of all, thank you for coming! It is such a great feeling to be able to come back to these shows and see people are still looking forward to rock music, especially live. It’s very encouraging to keep doing what we do when you see such a big turnout and excitement for it. So, more than anything, thank you so much, and we hope that you like our group, and I hope to see you more often! SIGT: Would you like to say anything to them in Spanish? TW: ¡In Spanish!
