Fashion is indeed a language; a conversation starter and piece, a message and a statement. The beauty of this is that as time has gone on, we’ve been fortunate to have the privilege of caring less about what we say with our outfits, disregarding the obvious hurtful words on a t-shirt or the accidental nudity that makes everyone wish you stayed in bed with those 10 year old small pajamas - two very obviously unfashionable statements. Moreover, through these words spoken through clothing, if we stop and actually look at and think about how someone is dressed, often times we can get a glimpse of how the initial conversation will go, what the person likes brand wise (thus fashion wise) and what they do for a career or hobby.
KAH-LO
Kah-Lo’s style is one that will continue to inspire the future of fashion in America and the world forever — ‘90s RnB street style meets a voguish and chīc blend of comfort and cool class. From her 2017 debut solo single “Fasta,” to her GRAMMY-nominated and chart topping smash “Rinse & Repeat” with producer Riton to the 2018 streaming hit “Fake I.D.” (and over two million tags on TikTok), KAH-LO IS TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM as the biggest female Nigerian artist on Spotify.
Music has played a huge part in Kah-Lo’s life. Born Faridah Demola-Seriki in Lagos, Nigeria, as a child, her father and uncle would play various ‘80s & ‘90s pop and hip-hop records around her home. Artists such as Slick Rick, M.I.A, Rihanna, Madonna, and Kanye West have all influenced her musical direction as well as her unique sense of style, topped off with her long flowing signature green hair. Beginning her musical journey straight out of university after making the brave decision to move from Nigeria to the U.S., she decided it was all or nothing and started taking crucial steps into the development of her fearless brand. Fast forward to 2019, Kah-Lo has amassed over 250 million combined streams, made the Shazam ‘Next To Know’ selection, was nominated for ‘Best International Artist’ at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards, featured on Selena Gomez’s remix of “Back To You,” was a surprise guest during Idris Elba’s Coachella set on their track “Ballie,” featured on Diplo’s track “Give Dem,” and collaborated with The Knocks on “Awa Ni.” Currently putting the final touches on a new solo single and working on her first solo fulllength release, Kah-Lo looks set to dominate throughout 2020. Vampire Weekend When I shoot a show there are always challenges that need to be worked around. Shooting Vampire weekend was no different. It was the first show that I was shooting with my new camera. (I upgraded my Nikon D610 to a D850!) I was finding that my D610 sorta took a shit in low-light stage lighting so I needed something with higher quality pictures when shooting in an ISO over 5000. I shoot in the multiple exposure mode — I shoot one image and then the next image that I shoot is combined with the first. It happens live, never in post. I don’t think it’s totally cheating to do it in post, but I don’t consider merging photographs in photoshop as “double exposed,” that to me is just digital art or whatever. There is something about the process of shooting the first and then lining up the shot with the intention of those two specific shots being meant for each other. It’s challenging and more fun to me than shooting the same shit every other nerd in the pit is shooting. It gets boring taking pictures of the lead singer or bassist looking cool. Adding that challenge to the process of shooting and the extended time it takes to get 1 merged photo makes shooting a concert exciting, hard, and the payoff is so much sweeter when you get the perfect combination. It’s the best feeling.
I realized when shooting Vampire Weekend that my new camera not only saved my double exposed image but it also saves the two individual images as well. This was pretty sweet. The ambient, unfocused bokeh shots that I like, to shooting in conjunction with a shot of the lead singer or drummer, I had never actually seen on it’s own because of my previous cameras limitations. Vampire Weekend’s lighting was cool in it’s tone so the band members skin looked void of color. But there was a lot of color on stage from their clothing, stage lighting, and like a 20-something ft globe that was the backdrop to their stage. I felt like my double exposure shots of this show were good individually, not amazing. Because my new camera saved the ambient or secondary shots — the ones shot with the intention of being merged not to stand on their own — I was able to see that work for the first time and ended up really connecting to those shots. I felt like these images needed to be valued just as much as the shots of the band. When I uploaded the images to my computer and saw them rapid firing through in preview mode I felt that these images needed to be viewed rapidly in succession. It sort of mimicked my shooting process and I feel that the photos are stronger as a collection than as individuals. Full gallery at showsigoto.com/photos Peace out fuckers. Florida Man Music Festival is back for year two and the lineup is already looking as wild as Florida Man himself! Orlando’s FM 101.9 radio station have gathered artists sitting on all sides of the alt genre spectrum. The lineup features some of our favorites — 311, Jimmy Eat World, The Revivalists, and of course, The 1975 — Friday, November 22 at Orlando Amphitheater. Last year the lineup was much thicker with shorter set times. We’ve received confirmation, no additional national artists will be added, only a local opener, and sets will be longer. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Florida Man Music Festival Lineup! THE 1975 — A leading sound when it comes to indie pop and rock, The 1975 hail from Wilmslow, Cheshire in England. Formed in 2002 while in high school, this rockin’ four-piece is a hell of a good time. Make sure you hit this set for big songs like “Somebody Else,” “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You),” and their newest single, “People.”
311 — These guys have been at it since 1988 and aren’t slowing down at all! Trust us when we say that the color of your energy at this set is “Amber.” Multi-platinum albums and success with nearly every turn means you can get “All Mixed Up” at this set and be a “Beautiful Disaster.” JIMMY EAT WORLD — Get stuck in “The Middle” with this killer four-piece. They are currently touring to promote their October 2019 release, ‘Surviving’ (have you seen the new video? holy shit!) Come for the new stuff and stay to hear all your old favorites! This set will definitely be “The Sweetness.” THE REVIVALISTS — A rock and soul group formed in 2007 in New Orleans, LA. Earning huge praise from Rolling Stone in 2015 as a “band you need to know,” The Revivalists have seen huge success for their work including their album, ‘Men Amongst Mountains’. Trust us, be here. Or else, you’ll “Wish You Were Here.” BARNS COURTNEY — Barns Courtney (not to be confused with Courtney Barnett) is bringing a bluesy folk fire dance party to central Florida.
MATT MAESON — You know how your parents used to keep you from listening to certain types of music so you started a heavy metal or punk band? This is the opposite of that. Matt Maeson’s parents played in Heavy Metal bands and he plays a unique brand of Country-ish Indie influenced by the OG legends — Johnny Cash, Jeff Buckley, & Kurt Cobain. SHAED — One of the biggest electro-pop songs to breach the airwaves in 2019 has been Shaed (pronounced “shade) “Trampoline.” Have a listen, you’re like already heard this something through speakers in a store. WHITE REAPER — Might be most excited about White Reaper. “Judy French” hit my ears just over two years ago and sounds perfect for November weather in Florida, drinking a Kona Big Wave. SUWANNEE ROOTS REVIVAL by Spencer Storch /// @swstorch
Let’s face it—our daily lives are a grind. Adulting isn’t easy and responsibilities take up our time. Luckily for the music community a place exists in Florida where we can clear our minds, and fill our hearts. Suwannee Roots Revival takes over the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park every year. Four nights of friends, who have become family, and some of the best ‘grass around. Music lovers come to this sacred land from all over and they can’t wait to get back. Folk rock guitarist Ralph Roddenbery sums up this feeling perfectly during his performance of his tune “This Very Day” with Donna the Buffalo on Sunday night:
“The city takes it from me, but the Suwannee gives it back.” I arrive back “home” again to the Spirit of Suwannee late Thursday afternoon. I am excited to spend four nights with my festival family! Camp is already set up on Spirit Lake and my friends have saved me a great spot facing the water. My friends shared their love with Suwannee, getting married the weekend before. He sings his vows of love by the water, promising her “Time could never steal our kind of love. I know that forever won’t be long enough.” Our homestead has an awesome hangout spot by the water, multiple kitchens, a great big circle of chairs around the “fire,” as well as stimulating sea of flickering and color changing lights. Our photographer, Carmelo Conte (@melothird), welcomes myself and others to the spot as we set up for another great weekend in Live Oak. This festival is lit! Seriously, a huge Hunter’s Moon is filling sky as well as the woods with bright, reflected sunshine (Soulshine). We bask in the glow of the night as we trek to first set of the weekend, Firewater Tent Revival. This six-piece high energy string band is from Atlantic Beach, FL. Jamgrass is my favorite style this festival and I am excited to let loose some killer dance moves. As soon as I walk into the twangin’ tent I’m impressed right away by Kris Whatley playing the washboard. To my

right a group of little girls in onesies are in a “conga line” and make their way around the crowd before falling down at the end of the song. This festival is filled to the brim with little kids. It features a huge children’s program as well as a talent show! I look up to see Jeff Hoff on saxophone (that’s right, there’s a sax in this jamgrass band) let loose a long solo with medley of teases like Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless” as well as “Shortnin’ Bread” by The Andrews Sisters sprinkled in. Our next stop is We Banjo 3. They are from Galway, Ireland and are a new sound for me. Folk and bluegrass with an Irish twist is a sound I’m not sure I knew existed, but this award-winning quartet has to be good since they’ve gone international. Although I was slightly disappointed that there weren’t three banjos in the band, I enjoyed the product on the stage. Especially the moment when multiinstrumentalist Fergal Scahill put down his fiddle and picked up a bodhrán (a handheld Irish drum) and has an interactive call back with the crowd. We shout “Hey” back to the stage as we move down the road and indoors to see The Grass is Dead in the music hall. The room is bright and loud but the Grateful Dead’s music can be heard over the roar
of the caged crowd. They play “Deal” while I watch the young and the old dance together to this timeless Americana sound. Later, they cover Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” and the room is filled with people catching the vibe. After a quick stop back at camp to eat some food we travel back to the venue to see Samantha Fish. A blues and roots rock artist who has shared the stage with artists like Devon Allman and the legendary Buddy Guy. She’s wearing a very sparkly jacket and has short blonde hair. In the first part of her performance she shows impressive skill on guitar, pickin’ and slidin’ her style of the blues. She’s supported on her solo by the drum and bass duo of Ken Tudrick and Chris Alexander. This band brings it and for the second time I walk away impressed with their performance. I can’t wait to see her on Jam Cruise in January of 2020. Jon Stickley Trio is up next! If you haven’t heard of this band, then maybe you’ve never heard of Electro-Harmonic Jazz Grass, but this trio is simply wonderful. Hailing from Asheville, NC, violinist Lyndsay Pruett, drummer Hunter Deacon, and guitarist Jon Stickley, take turns wowing the crowd as they push bluegrass to the next level. They execute a great cover of Béla Fleck’s “Sinister Minister,” while fans howl at the moon around me. When the set ends we walk back to camp trading funny stories from the day. I wake up the next morning to the sounds of children laughing and playing in the camp next to me. The sunshine streams in through the top of my tent and the cool breeze dances through the leaves above my head. The weather is so nice, after a long summer of endless heat, that I exit my tent and spin around with my arms wide open. I start my day by making breakfast while I soak up the sun with my friends. After our meal we head to the music for Free Range Strange. This upbeat string band graduates from being a staple at Slopperyland, the official after-music jam spot, to being in the lineup and the Dance Tent. Mandolin player Sunni Rae sings with a Southern vibrato which brings a smile to my
Next on the menu is The Travelin’ McCourys. This jam-grass band just won a Grammy for their self-titled album. It’s the Bluegrass Album of the Year! Needless to say, even without Del, these guys are gooood. They lead with “Midnight Flyer” where flat-pick guitar champion Cody Kilby is setting the stage on fire. The crowd is super into the music and a few people even get out of their chairs to dance. This is a true jamband. The soloist is always ready, expecting to be cut off by the next guy with his solo contribution to the song. Like musical whack-a-mole, you just don’t know who’s bringing the heat next. They let loose an great cover of Passenger’s “Let It Go,” and people dance and sing along to the hearts delight. Del’s grandson Evan joins in the fun as the torch is slowly passed to the third generation of the family. Covering again, they play “Loser,” by Beck.
face. Jamming out almost every song, they get crazy towards the end and Nilu Jimenez-Ross even straddles her stand up bass while playing it. You can really feel the passion. I’m looking forward to seeing this animated band again! We catch Donna Hopkins Band next on our quest for bluegrass and beyond this weekend. Super excited because they have a drummer! Richie Jones helps the band rock out with blues while Donna and company provide great harmonies! Dennis Stadelman of Cope is delightful as always on guitar. I also love Brad Bauman on harmonica. Del McCoury Band is the most awarded artist in Bluegrass history. Del practically invented contemporary bluegrass. He’s the legend on stage with his two sons — Rob (banjo), and Ronnie (mandolin). This is one well dressed band too! They gather around one mic and serenade the large crowd with songs like “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” and they get the crowd churning with “Orange Blossom Special.” Fiddle player Jason Carter caught my eyes and ears during the cheeky song “Hotwire.” They end this splendid set with Del’s classic tune, “All Aboard.” Spending some time at camp, we listen to local artists play around camp while we pass things around and become better friends. Back at the music we catch a bit of the Lil’ Smokies. They are fun with covers like “Rocket Man,” by Elton John and ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man.” When they end we travel to check out Balkun Brothers. A guitar and drum duo that reminds me of George Thorogood. It’s the morning of Day 3 and we head to the Music Hall first for a very talkative set with Peter Rowan. Peter is an icon who used to share the stage with guitarist Jerry Garcia in the group, Old & In the Way. Now solo on stage he competes with the sounds of a restaurant and sports bar in the back to tell his fans the stories behind his songs. When you close your eyes and listen to him sing, it takes you on a journey through Western landscapes, where the wind blows cold through the land of the Navajo.
Sam Bush has been crowned the “King of Newgrass.” Bush, along with his band mates in New Grass Revival carried the torch for the genre through the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. This gave way to the beautiful sounds we have today—jamgrass. He covers “The Letter” by Joe Cocker and the crowd is really into it. Multi-instrumentalist Bush is crazy good as he switches between stringed instruments without slipping in skill. I can’t help but have a good time, but they really make me smile with a rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls of Fire!” Appropriately we move into “Howlin’ at the Moon,” because hot damn is it big and bright! The crowd obliges and we all howl together, letting loose all weekend long! These guys sound so different than the rest, boasting a drummer as well as electrified and distorted instruments. Keller and the Keels are the headlining set for the weekend and they are awesome! Larry Keel is a flat-picking legend who tours with his wife Jenny Keel in The Larry Keel Experience. When they combine with Keller Williams, a fun-loving singer and one hell of a guitarist, they are an unstoppable force. This set is full of fun covers, starting with Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise.” “Peaches” by The President’ of the United States proceeds the unveiling of their brand new original single:
“Medulla Oblongata.” Returning to covering the ‘90s, they play “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers, which gets really weird and trippy in the middle jam portion, and “Help” by Weezer. Our lakeside jams are once again so good, I don’t even need to leave to find another party. Our site is full of fantastic musicians who take turns wowing my lounging friends with songs from all around the spectrum. I feel so lucky to know these awesome people. Last night was awesome, but I’m feeling it today. I miss most of today’s tunes, but rally for the finish of Donna the Buffalo. This cajun, rock, folk, reggae, and country band from upstate New York has been playing together since 1989 and a staple at Suwannee Roots Revival. DtB is joined by guitarist Ralph Roddenbery and drummer Richie Jones. Roddenbery dances with fast feet on the stage, holding his guitar out in front of him and he moves sideways across his spot. Playing “This Very Day” brings with it my favorite quote of the weekend, “The city takes it from me, but the Suwannee gives it back!” We are thankful for this day and for our lives as we enter a more somber moment on stage. They tell the story of how a life was tragically taken from us at the beginning of the festival by an awful and unfortunate event — a pedestrian crash which claimed the life of a 49-year-old woman. The crash took place on 30th Trail in the Spirit of the Suwannee Park. We all have a moment of silence before people call out the love they have for the Spirit of Suwannee and each other. However inappropriate, jokester Ralph Roddenbery leads the band in a rendition of his song “That’s Gunna Leave a Mark” to close out the festival. We jet over to the vendors and scoop a veggie quesadilla at the Solar Cafe before making it back to camp for another round of acoustic jams. So ends another fantastic festival at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. See you all at Suwannee Spring Reunion in March! VISIT — MusicLivesHere.com /// @suwanneemusicpark /// @suwanneeroots

THE FLYIN FOTOG
Live music, photography, and traveling.
18
These are a few of my favorite things. And wouldn’t ya know, I found a way to tie them all together! I have been doing concert photography since high school; back when there was this thing called film. And I have traveled the country a good bit shooting music festivals. But it wasn’t until I began working as a flight attendant that my music travels stepped into high gear. It has opened up a world of opportunity for me. Actually, it has opened up the world to me! Traveling and live music are two of my greatest joys on this planet and to combine the two is amazing. My passion for live music has enriched my worldly experiences. I have seen things I previously never had — Red Rocks, the French Riviera, the Acropolis, the Colosseum, London, Antibes, Lyon, Naples, Pompeii, and even the lavender and sunflower fields of Provence. I have seen a modern concert in an ancient Roman theater and Jamiroquai under an Athenian sky. I have even dined at the world’s oldest pizzeria. All because of an addiction to live music. If you feel like you might be addicted to live music I am the last guy to give you an intervention. I am a complete enabler. Go buy those tickets. Branch out of your comfort zone. If your favorite band is playing somewhere you have always wanted to visit, then combine the two experiences. Concerts are a great reason to plan your vacations. Exotic locations will always exist, but that concert will only be for a night. Let’s be real, what are you gonna regret? Going somewhere awesome? Seeing one of your favorite bands? Yeah right.
Matthew travels the world working for an airline and goes to shows wherever he lands. TRAVEL TIPS — 1. Never rely on others for your plans. They might bail on you. Be prepared to go alone. Its intimidating but incredibly rewarding.
Follow his adventures on Instagram @the.flyin.fotog and wright to him at matthew@showsigoto.com
2. Pad your schedule. Plan to arrive at least a day or more before the concert. At the very least you’ll need time to recover from the traveling. And it’s always possible that you’ll encounter a flight delay for any number of reasons. 3. Don’t schedule quick connection times. Sure it sounds good, but so many things can go wrong! Maybe your next flight will be in a different terminal and you will have to go through security again. If you have multiple flights, this could cause you to miss your connection and now you will not be arriving as planned.
Pro Tip —
If traveling internationally, do not book a quick connection between countries; you will have to go through customs AND security. For some reason airlines’s computer systems will allow you to book these tight connection; don’t fall for it. If it says its an hour connection, it is NOT. Boarding usually starts about 30 minutes or more prior to departure and the doors close 10 minutes prior.

“I think everyone always associates The Center with HIV Testing and Health Services, which is a really big component. We are the largest HIV tester in the state. But we have so much more. We’re a safe space, we have a cyber center, we have free mental health counseling, youth
programming, s e n i o r programming, a lot of community outreach — we have a van so we go out and work with sex workers down on Orange Blossom Trail — we have art programming, we have a local LGBTQ+ history museum, and the national traveling Stonewall Inn Exhibit (through Dec 31), we have Drag Queen Bingo, monthly art shows, weekly yoga, and we host 25 different social support and recovery groups (calendar adjacent).” “One of our flagship programs is called OWL, which is Older Wiser Learning. Every week, we provide a hot meal, a safe space to socialize, and an educational component — memory testing, safe driving. We find isolation is one of the biggest things that happens in the elderly community. As they get older, we find they go back into the closet because they’re afraid to share with their health care provider. The next generation and the one after will be responsible to shift in the community towards being more open and accepting.” Did you know? The Center is now an Official Fringe Festival! TICKETMASTER TIPS 22
ON THE DAY OF THE ON-SALE
PLAN AHEAD BEFORE THE ON-SALE
When the time approaches for the presale or regular public sale to start: Use multiple browsers rather than multiple tabs within the same browser (ie. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari). Your mobile phone is also a good device to have handy. Whichever site you are buying from, have their app already downloaded (one of my friends swears using mobile device over a computer but I’ve only tried it a few times without much luck).
In the days/hours ahead of the presale or regular public sale, familiarize yourself with the seating chart of the venue to have an idea of the sections you want tickets in and also the price breakdowns of the different sections (no need if you want or only option is general admission).
Make sure you are logged into your Ticketmaster (or LiveNation) account ahead of time and make sure your Ticketmaster payment source is up to date. If it is a presale and you have a code to use — copy the code into your clipboard for easy pasting rather than having to look it up and/or having to type it in (remember every millisecond you can save gets into the sale that much quicker). Make sure you know exactly what time it is and how soon the sale begins – I use https://time.gov/ Get to the sale page 10 minutes ahead of time (in all browsers/devices if you are using multiple) so if you are put into a waiting room you should be ahead of those who waited till the last minute.
Check artist specific subreddits (if you’re not familiar with Reddit just google the artist’s name and reddit in the same search string and it will find it. For example, Metallica’s subreddit is https://www.reddit. com/r/Metallica/ ) – many times there are paid members who are not able to use their presale codes and are willing to share (never pay an individual for a code, 99.9999% of the time that is a scam). Check the artist’s social media accounts – this is a longshot that they give out a code but one of those you never know as I have had had at least one time where I got killer seats by following a twitter link from the artist for a free unannounced presale. Install an ad blocker. Ad blockers (I use Adblock Plus) will remove (most) CAPTCHA from ticket purchasing sites I have found.
WHEN THE SALE STARTS
DON’T GIVE UP
Once the pre or public sale starts and the buying frenzy begins, be patient if you are put into a waiting room or a line queue on Ticketmaster’s site – the page should/will refresh on its own when you can finally access and purchase.
If you are not able to get tickets and the secondary ticket market is priced too high, check those same local radio stations that you searched before. If they had a presale, they will most likely have free tickets for their giveaways/contests – either by callins, online entry, or even station events. This one I can attest to as I have won a ridiculous amount of tickets over the past few years – they are not always the best seats in the giveaways but hey, you are at the show for free and sometimes you can do seat upgrades with those free tickets at the venue for a nominal fee (depending on close the show is to being sold out).
Utilize your familiarity with the seating chart you hopefully reviewed before getting to this point to focus on the section/price level you are targeting for your seats – no sense having the site search the whole arena if you know ahead of time you want to sit in a specific section. If you select seats and put them in your cart be mindful of the time limit before your session auto timeout and you lose the seats you had if you keep searching for better seats. Utilize the other browsers/mobile devices to search unless you hit the jackpot with the seats that you wanted on your first attempt. If you do not get the section that you want right at first keep trying – odds are there is someone who had tickets in their cart but were either not already logged in or had outdated payment information in their account and their buying session times out thereby releasing the tickets back to the available pool.
Set a reminder to check Ticketmaster and the artist’s social media the day before and the day of the show – sometimes tickets get released close to the show once final stage configurations are set, and guest and media tickets are released (these are called Production Hold tickets). If you are able to go to the venue for the event – if scalpers still have tickets once the show starts then usually you can negotiate a much better price from them than had you inquired before the show started. We wish you the best of luck! Please send any tips you have to tips@showsigoto.com
INTERVIEW WITH TONY LEVIN Josh Jauz (@joshjauz) with Shows I Go To Magazine (SIGT) — Hi Tony, thank you for taking a few minutes to speak with us this morning! Tony Levin (@tonylevin) of King Crimson (KC) — Yes, happy to! That’s a neat name for your paper! SIGT: As a tenured member of the band what is it about this lineup you feel makes it special? KC: Definitely the three drummers. Robert (Fripp) has always been the leader of the band and he has a very specific vision for what we’re going to do and he wanted to have this lineup with three drummers. They’re all down front so that’s who the audience is watching most of the time. The other four of us are on a riser behind them. SIGT: I should probably tell you that I’m a drummer, so this lineup is a real treat! Getting to watch Gavin (Harrison), Pat (Mastelotto), and Jeremy (Stacey) all together is amazing! KC: Yes, and they’re not all pounding away at the same beat. This music is very challenging to play, and it’s still very hard just to play all parts correctly. With the three drummers playing different parts it makes it easier to fit in the right space because it opens up the sonic landscape. SIGT: Since you’ve been involved in different lineups and eras of the band, and I personally know you originally from the 80’s era with Adrian Belew and Bill Bruford, are there any songs which are your favorites? KC: I don’t really have favorite bands, songs, or anything. We didn’t play the 80’s era songs with this lineup previously, but we are playing some of them now. It’s a challenge every day to play not only the songs where I wrote the bass parts, but also to play the incredible parts that were written by the bassists who came before me and those after me. Robert tells us every afternoon what the set list is going to be for the night, so that keeps the shows interesting.
KING CRIMSON SIGT: You don’t know what you’re going to play until right before the show? KC: Robert actually decides in the morning at breakfast and tells us in the afternoon what the set will be. We rehearse at 3:00, and all of us spend our day practicing. The drummers all have practice kits in their rooms and everybody else has their guitars or instrument in their room so they can practice too. It’s very difficult to play this material live! We have around 60 songs we pull from in our rotation. SIGT: It’s really humbling to hear that the greatest progressive rock band of all time spend their entire day practicing their instruments and preparing to execute their live show instead of just sitting back on their elbows. I imagine it helps keep everything fresh and dynamic! KC: Yes, exactly the words I was looking for, thank you. We’re playing about three hours a night which is a lot to handle for both the band and the audience. SIGT: Absolutely! King Crimson is my favorite band of all time and to get to see you on the 50th Anniversary tour with this lineup is really special. It’s been an honor to get to speak with you and thank you again for taking the time! --------------------------------------------------------------Anthony Frederick Levin was born June 6, 1946 (age 73). A prolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on 500 albums. He is one of the most respected bassists on earth, and widely known for his use of (Chapman) stick. This is his second stint with King Crimson—Celebrating 50 Years! Tonylevin.com /// @tonylevin /// @kingcrimsonofficial Photos: Dean Stocking (portrait) and David Singleton (live shot)

sigt exclusive Q&A
w/ Michael Berg, Partner & Talent Buyer at suwannee hULAWEEN SIGT — Thank you for making Hulaween happen this year! We all felt the fear together when we learned of Silver Wrapper was bidding farewell. What was this process like for you professionally and personally? BERG — Well, thank you and the #HulaFam for sticking with us throughout a tumultuous time. It’s certainly been a challenging year both professionally and personally due to a myriad of reasons but Hula and the closing of Silver Wrapper are up at the top of the list. The process has been an emotional rollercoaster of challenges & evolution, but here we are almost ready to go on year 7 so it’s all working itself out. I really miss the Silver Wrapper team both on Hulaween, and for the projects I’m working on in Chicago. The SW team was, still is, and will always be my family. Change is an inevitable part of life though, so onward we march in the never ending race to the finish line, or for now, Hula in just a few short weeks! SIGT — What are you most excited about with the beginning of this new era?
30
BERG — That’s hard to fully detail, as we are still in the moment of the transition. With change comes newness & rebirth which can be refreshing but is also a bit scary. Sometimes it’s easier to look back at a timeframe down the line to really best
understand what was happening in that era. The things we’re excited about as a team is forcing ourselves to analyze every detail, see how & where to improve or adjust, and learn to make the event more sustainable for a long time to come. It’s exciting to explore how we can be better as event producers, talent buyers & experiential curators without compromising the vibe. SIGT — What can we expect from Spirit Lake this year? Are you bringing back the water-powered jet packs? BERG — Spirit Lake will be back in full effect. Some new installations, and also some elements you’ll recognize from the past, but maybe notice something different about this time around. You’ll have to explore yourself as words do zero justice towards the Spirit Lake experience, as you or anyone who’s ever walked around it truly understands. SIGT — There is so much love at Hulaween. What makes Hulaween so special for you as a talent buyer? BERG — There is indeed so much love at Hulaween, also a lot of strong opinions (as we all see daily online). The internet and its legions of armchair quarterbacks can be ruthlessly unforgiving. That said, as a talent buyer, it’s special for us to feel so connected to the community that is Hula. We would come to this show as fans if it wasn’t ours. We are one with the Hula community. That is special and not every show gets to be like that. SIGT — What are your “cannot-miss” sets? BERG — I always forget to include acts that I (or you) wouldn’t want to miss when I answer these, but a few sets off the top of my head I’m excited for are Anderson .Paak, FlyLo, Thundercat, Marc Rebillet, Tycho, Greensky, Manic Focus, Tchami, Billy Strings, JRAD, Karina Rykman, Tom Morello, Walker & Royce, Lettuce, and Circles Around The Sun with very special guest Eric Krasno.

THE MENZINGERS –
by Raven Brajdic
SLIPKNOT
46
If you ever feel the need to get out of your head and into someone else’s, listen to ‘We Are Not Your Kind’. Slipknot’s sixth studio album perfectly balances heavy, melodic tracks like “Liar’s Funeral” with the fast-paced rolling riffs and catchy choruses that the metal band is known for. Describing it as some of the darkest writing he’s done in years, ‘Kind’ takes you into the mental state of vocalist Corey Taylor and his battles with depression, mania, and self-destruction following his divorce. There is a grit and ferocity behind lines like, “A hope like yours won’t help me now,” as they tear through the instrumentals of tracks like “Solway Firth” and “Nero Forte.” In “Unsainted,” the first single released from the album, Taylor sings ”I’ll never kill myself to save my soul / I’m finally holding on to letting go.” While Slipknot plays to their strengths in ‘Kind’, experimental elements like brief instrumental interludes and songs like the In their fourth studio album, Bon Iver goes beyond personal darkly atmospheric “Spiders” help push introspection and love to instead touch on the state of the their creative boundaries and deliver what world. Justin Vernon addresses topics like climate change many regard to be one of the band’s best in “Holyfields” and “Jelmore,” as he asks, “How long will you albums. ‘Kind’ shows not only how far disregard the heat?” The poignant single “Hey, Ma,” full of Slipknot has come over the past 20 years, beautiful loneliness and synthesized sound, might be one of but also how much of them is still here. Vernon’s best. “Full time you talk your money up / While it’s /// 8.5/11 /// living in a coal mine / Tall time to call your ma,” he sings. In typical fashion, Bon Iver seems to favor the way words sound rather than how they’re strung together. Meaning can be taken from the seemingly nonsensical track list, with the title of the song “Sh’Diah” serving as an abbreviation for “Shittiest Day in American History” — the Wednesday after Election Day 2016 when Donald Trump won the presidency. While some lines are cryptic—or, at times, indecipherable (“I fall off a bass boat/And the concrete’s very slow”)—’i,i’ sings like Vernon left the woods of Wisconsin and realized that while he was heartbroken, the world had started dying. ‘HELLO EXILE’ /// 7.5/11 /// True to form, the Philly-four hit the ground running with the impossibly catchy, could-be anthem for our whole year “America (You’re Freaking Me Out)”, and somehow, someway, the album simply doesn’t relent. “Anna” is a toe-tapping, drive-by romance between a searing guitar and a strong chorus. “High School Friend” is the post-adolescence ode to our own revisionist ways that we all need to hear. “Last to Know” is a measured singalongstyle requiem, appealing as it is gloomy … and that’s just the first four, folks. The album just keeps running. With their unrelenting hooks and perennially relatable lyrics, the Philly-four cement what most of us already know but are afraid to say — that right now, The Menzingers are the best band in pop-punk. There, I said it. F.F.O. : Gaslight Anthem, Dead to Me, PUP /// 9.5/11 ///

‘NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL’
LANA DEL REY Released right before Labor Day, ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’ does its best to stretch out the final notes of summer. The brooding sixth studio album, self-described to Billboard as “a folk record with a little surf twist,” is California swathed in sepia tones. Del Rey’s velvety vocals, backed primarily by pianos, are as distinctive as ever as she purrs lines like, “And if I wasn’t so fucked up, I think I’d fuck you all the time,” or “I’ve heard the war was over if you really choose.” “Fuck it I love you,” sung in rapid sing-song, is dreamy, languid, and nostalgic. Others, like a remake of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time,” make you want to hop in your car for a final road trip to the beach. With frequent references to today’s political climate—punctuated with typical Lana-isms about California locales, partying with topshelf liquor, and music legends like Crosby, Stills, and Nash— it’s a mood album that might make you wistful for simpler days. /// 8/11 ///

Boy Muscle / Cool Grandma – ‘ST Split’ Bless the Central Florida punk scene for moments like this. Just in time for social-awareness season, local juggernauts Boy Muscle and Cool Grandma team up to give us a raucous life-lesson in seven deliciously raw installments. Somewhere between a siege and a house party, there’s a parade of punks chanting Boy Muscle’s “Viva La Vulva,” — the first track of the split — a literal line in the sand, and a fuckin’ banger to start with. Boy Muscle continues the charge with the hearty, bass-led “Goldilocks Zone,” and closes out in fine fashion with “Snow Queen.” On “There’s Nothin,” Cool Grandma take up the baton and swings hard, cracking on through “Mutilate Me,” and riding surf-vibes thru “Bloodsucker.” Cool Grandma present one of the rawest punk songs I’ve heard in nearly a decade — “Good Vibes Only” — indicting those fairweather, so, so posi-types we all know and shed. The split is smart, hard, and delightfully searing in an environment which deserves every bit of it. The dual-bands win a dual-victory as the harmony between the two is as perfectly enjoyable as it is significant. The [punk] future is female. F.F.O. : Wet Nurse, Bikini Kill, The Slits /// 7.5/11 ///

Summer Spiders – ‘Pieces’ Somewhere in 2004, a portal opened and ‘Pieces’ fell through. It swirled around the cosmos for a short time, picked up some impressive production equipment, condensed itself into a one-man band, and got its heart broken. Finally, it landed in 2019, probably on a beach, and grinned at the bright horizon. This is a fiction, of course, but all it takes is one listen to Summer Spiders’ latest to know that this very well could be the EP’s harrowing origin story. Just like the album, it’s warm, and it’s storied, and it’s quirky, and it’s nostalgic for all the right reasons. Summer Spiders is the solo vehicle of the inimitable Mikey Cortes, whom you may (and should) recognize as DJ Kittybat, our favorite local Polymath, and a member of many CFL forces of nature such as The Attack, Overdale, and The Spitvalves. On ‘Pieces’, Cortes channels his many influences and his undeniable talent into a tight 18 minutes of poppy, punky, surf-cultured rock. Title track “Pieces” is a salient end-of-summer jam as good as anything Adam Lazarra could pull. Tracks “Yes Yesterday” and “Hands in the Ocean” conjure adolescent dreams as real as mixtapes and Myspace. “Pizza Rolls” is the same old gauche, guilty pleasure you earned to love two decades ago. Wherever ‘Pieces’ fell from, it’s determined to live in your car’s CD player this fall. F.F.O. : Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, The Starting Line /// 8.5/11 ///
Capstan – ‘Restless Heart, Keep Running’ Hometown hardcore finds a lot to love in melody on Capstan’s latest – ‘Restless Heart, Keep Running’. Much to its benefit, ‘Restless Heart’ feels curated – framed by classical piano, strings, a masterful variety of guitar, and (spoiler alert) the occasional saxophone. Elegant intros (“An Open Door”), interludes and soul-bearing ballads (“There is no Answer,” “Hideaway”) abound, while catchy choruses and indelibly poppy hooks are woven into every heart-wrenching word. Apex moments like “We’ll always have Paris” and “Stars Before the Sun” shine, and play nicely on Capstan’s pop-punk roots (“Fix”). All in all, Capstan’s biggest success here is not a single song, but an album that feels like an organic, blossoming whole. On ‘Restless Heart’, Capstan achieves elegance in chaos, weaving a melodious blend of influences with masterful metal riffs to make (what else?) genuinely enjoyable, head-bobbing post-hardcore. At 13 well-wrought, beautifully frenetic tracks, this one may just be the lucky number that launch them from hometown heroes to headliners. F.F.O.:RealFriends, ADTR, Thursday

This is BASE – the Body Art Showcase and Exhibit, which creator/curator/artist/ coordinator Mandi Schiff bills as “the only body-painting event in the U.S. of this magnitude,” where the public can experience 360-degree, living, breathing canvases, developed right before their eyes–and it is a sight to see! Stunningly nuanced and original artworks sprawl the bare bodies of more than a dozen models, as mesmerizing for their hidden details as they are for their ephemeral nature. “In the morning this will all be gone.” Says Mandi as she applies another layer of airbrushing to her model. “That’s sort of the magic of it.”
Developed in 2012, BASE has endured venue changes, featured dozens of local artists, and dazzled countless visitors, but goes stronger than ever in its current home, the Orange Studio building at 1121 N Mills Ave. Presented as a bi-monthly exhibition, the event has covered themes from Sci-Fi, Fantasy, the Cosmos, and even the British Invasion, but it’s impressive growth is never more evident than its impact on the community. “This is probably the coolest art event in Orlando, period.” Spouts a patron, and nearby body-painter, Emma Kenemer is beaming. “Base fosters a friendship amongst colleagues,” she says. “It’s like a utopia of shared work, encouragement, and personal growth. We inspire and support each other. BASE has built a family that creates art together.” Her model, ChaCha, agrees.

“This place is amazing,” says ChaCha Chavez with a joyful sigh. She’s head-to-toe painted like a deadly Venus Flytrap, nude, save for a few creative prosthetics, scanning a warehouse full of artists, models, entertainers, and captivated guests. There are werewolves and ringleaders, burlesque dancers, and an undead cheerleader. Men and women are being painted with fantastically colorful imagery from pop culture, and creatures are coming to life. Hellboy is emblazoned across the chest of one model, Jack Skelington on another. Mad Moxxi is applying eyebrows to Pennywise. Venom is chatting with the Bride of Frankenstein. Spectators mingle and move about the artists’ stations while photographers capture it all.
“BASE has given me so much more than I could ask for. What could be better than live artistry, specialty talents, good vibes, and friends, all in one place?!” This is the resounding perception and spirit of BASE – that at its core it is an experience of pure personal expression, and a warm embrace of everyone involved. Artist, model, or guest, everyone has a place at BASE. Check out and follow BASE at Facebook.com/BaseOrlandoShow Instagram and Twitter @BaseOrlando

Reviewing trumpeter/ songwriter, Bria Skonberg’s new album, ‘Nothing never happens’, which comes out november 7, 2019 I’ve been following the music career of bria for about a year. bria is a “real musician.” a true artist. Simply put, Skonberg’s newest LP is a shining triumph. From the very first track “Black Out” you realize you’ve just discovered something fresh and exciting.
This trumpeter/songwriter is an old soul with the timeless influences of some of the best Jazz icons ever to be memorialized on wax (vinyl). Some of those would be Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, the fragility of Chet Baker, and even Doc Severinsen. Bria’s trumpeting is strong, clean, and complex with the warm and mature tone of a master. Like Chet Baker, Bria doubles as a singer. With vocal chops rooted in Blues and Jazz, her singing is genuine and filled with emotion. The tone and texture of Bria’s voice is velvety and lush. To listen to Bria is like an indulgence in the sweetest confection you feel so guilty about just consuming. Listen to the whole album and you’ll feel impish like the cat who just ate the canary. One of satisfaction yet devilishness.

‘Nothing Never Happens’ is a collection of well written songs (except “Black Bird” – The Beatles) so varied yet so invariably linked. The playing by Bria and her band is exceptional and is worth a listen on the merit of their performance alone. Even Bria’s interpretation of The Beatles “Black Bird” sounds so original and is an inspiration. We all know Something is always happening. So, remember to add ‘Nothing Never Happens’ to your “Must Listen To” list. I can say with confidence — you will not regret it. Aloma blew us away with their near three hour performance at the Historic Leu House Museum at Harry P. Leu Gardens as part of the Jazz n’ Blues In The Garden series. As a live band, they shred through solos on custom homemade guitars, and slide deep into groovy pockets of funk, psychedelic rock, and honky blues. Catch them at Tanqueray’s downtown Orlando monthly and check out their new video for “Freight Train Shuffle.” Every location in the video is from a different part of CFLwhere each member grew up. Full Moon in Taurus:
Sagittarius season is
coming!:
New Moon in Sagittariu s:
ARIES: This month is a huge career
month for you, Aries. This month will fuel your inner fire. Take what surfaces this month and turn it into action steps. It’s time for you to step into a leadership role and show the others around you that making changes and taking action can be empowering. Get to work. Be sure to focus some attention on your health and relaxation this month as well. It is important that you detox your mind, body, spirit and surroundings. Explore all the possibilities of your future!
TAURUS : It’s time to come out of your
shell, Taurus. You love feeling comfortable and safe (it’s your grounding nature!), but it’s time to experiment. You know that it’s time to shake things up a bit. Here’s what you need to know — it’s time to take inspired action. You have more strength than you realize. Your heart is asking you to explore unknown territory and see where it could lead you. You can always return to your safe haven but this month it is a must that you put yourself in situations that allow you to grow and glow.
AQUARIUS: This is a highly creative month
for you, Aquarius. November will bring about many new ideas both personally and biz wise. Take time this month to get out and explore as it will highly feed your creativity (and that’s something you need right now). You are very compassionate and caring in all your relationships and a lot of times you put others first. This month, practice putting yourself first. There’s no shame in the game (like seriously, don’t feel bad) and it will only benefit the people you care about down the road. Get out there and take time for yourself!
PISCES: Scorpio season is so powerful
for you, Pisces. It lasts until the 23rd and it’s actually dire that you feel into all your psychic, mystic powers. Reflect on the greatest lessons you’ve learned this year. Sometimes you beat yourself up but that only turns you further away from the lesson you’re meant to learn. Be kind with yourself and enjoy this month while you analyze how you can move forward more proactively. This is a time of reflection and cleansing. After the 23rd, give yourself a motivation boost! Now isn’t the time to slow down, as much as you may want to! It is important you keep your energy up and make big moves through
the final weeks of the year. There is lots to be done and you have the power to make it happen. Get to it! You will thank yourself as you get presented with big opportunities early next year.
GEMINI: Sit with your feelings and
experiences and feel into their intensity this month, Gemini. Don’t just shut out whatever doesn’t feel good, let your curious mind explore it! There’s much to be learned about yourself this month (especially during Scorpio season) and it can become one of your greatest tools (especially in biz!) Slow down and listen to what’s coming up for you. You don’t need to have the answers to everything. Open to all the possibilities that surround you (hint: there’s a lot!)
CANCER: Be sure to take care of yourself
this month, Cancer, but take time to give some extra love to those around you! The first half of this month you feel in your natural state. You will find yourself more motivated and inspired than usual and also extra social! After the 23rd, take time to retreat and reflect on what you need. It’s okay to need things! You sometimes struggle with asking others for help. After the 23rd, ask for help if you need it! It will enhance not only your life but the way you get to work as well.
LEO: Stop fighting yourself, Leo. Your
shadows may appear this month, but you are ready to confront them with love and compassion. Looking inwards this month will lead you to burst outwards with love. This month could be outstanding for you if you get vulnerable with yourself. Remember just how powerful you are alone. Chase down the visions you’ve been having for yourself and act on them. You’ll thank yourself in the future.
VIRGO: This year you have realized you
hold the power within you to go where you want to go and do what you want to do. Don’t hand that power to someone else now. This year has been transformational for you and you will witness the proof of that this month. Remain strong willed. You might feel a little messy at times this month but those are growing pains. Set the intention to learn something new about yourself as you ebb and flow with the energies of this month. No regrets, keep moving forward.
LIBRA: Focus on grounding yourself
this month, Libra. You have a powerful voice but if you become overly amped up about things, your voice will get lost amongst the crowd. Center and focus on your personal goals this month and trust that others will feel them. You have the ability to create major change, but you have to be open to those around you. Show others how there is calmness and harmony within the chaos and they will start to see where you’re coming from.
SCORPIO: You are in your natural state for
the greater part of this month and it feels electrifying. You are a magnet for all your desires and your manifestation powers are at an all time high. Figure out what it is you truly want, and make your plan to get it. (You probably already know what it is.) You must speak out if you want to be understood and get others to see your vision. It has been an eventful year for you and now is time for massive release emotionally, mentally, and physically. It’s very important you open yourself up to others this month. If you do, you will be glowing from the inside out.
SAGITTARIUS: Explore thought patterns and limiting beliefs that you have formed over the past year! Get curious about where they came from and see what lessons or messages they are trying to teach you in order for you to move forward both in life and biz. After the 23rd of this month, things will lighten up for you. Take what you’ve learned and set high goals for the year ahead. There were many transitions for you this year but you are moving into a higher place of being. After the 23rd is a time of celebration! Put in the work now!
CAPRICORN: There may be some tough things to face early this month but be patient and compassionate with yourself. Giving yourself space to explore a deeper level of yourself will allow you grow into the person you are becoming. This will establish a solid foundation to work from in both life and biz and it will give you a confidence boost for the months ahead! Practice extra gratitude this month! It will bring you abundance in the months
