@ADTR /// Nov. 29. 2019
/// HOUSE OF BLUES ///
/// ORLANDO ///
A DAY TO
REMEMBER Words by Mitch Foster /// @fmitchfoster Photographs by Ebay /// @lizbatesphotography This is a stream of consciousness. I’m tearing up, high on a gummy. To the left, the cocktail servers laugh loudly ‘cause they have the lyrics down and shout them to each other’s faces on night four of the soldout ADTR /// HOB treat. Damn. It makes me so happy to see this room passionately pouring love out to these people. I wonder why I cry. A true cry is one you don’t think about, it just comes. Yeah, I know, this is emo, but true. There’s a woman beside me. “You want a shot?” Um, sure. “This gummy is hitting my so hard.” I tell my new friend in conversation. She laughs and smiles and says, “well, I can’t help you with that.” “What?” I look perplexed. But she’s right. I’m puzzled because she offered a little eye-fuck with her statement. Am I being hit on at an ADTR show? Sweet. I wasn’t until after the shot, I realized she thought I said, “This is making me so hard.” Oh boy ... I confirm with her, yep, we laugh. I laughed hard. So hard. I wonder how many times we’ve caught the wrong words with our ears and believed them. Someone dressed in a princess dress skips onstage to puff a shirt from a small cannon into the audience. Ohmygod, it’s Lyndy! Alex’s gf. Nope. No it’s not. My bad. I’m just the high idiot at the bar listening to people say, “I know them,” while I share the same thought in my head. But do we really? Do I even know me?
16
I couldn’t find parking. My car was overheating. I didn’t want to miss Underoath. I parked in a “Disney Vehicle” parking spot. There were a bunch open. I left a lie saying, “Bartending HOB tonight, please don’t tow.” Can’t believe this worked. I’m such a pineapple. The few new songs only half the crowd sing seem to guilt the rest into learning the words by the third chorus, or even unknowingly remembering them for the next time. It’s brilliant. Their fans are their greatest marketing propellers. There are a few bands like this which I think evoke this type of infectious connection — bands who perpetuate a phenomenon or a calculated formula for success. Your parents won’t understand it but your wives will love it (I think I wrote this because Drew Russ told me one of Josh’s parents were upstairs). I am too elevated to stay still. I wander around and see a glowing Alex Tchekmeian in the center and a gleaming Mary above Neil. My friend Katie is up here too. I feel like I snuck onto a set of a different reality. When I was 16, Neil showed me a VHS tape of a hardcore band at his house and told me he was “going to do this” while pointing and giving me his best serious face. He’s doing it man. They’re living intangible. I wish the confetti was edible. I love these dudes. A Day To Remember have a new album coming out in 2020 called You’re Welcome.

We are truly taking things to new heights this episode and in the ones to come. There is so much talent in Orlando and we as locals need not forget it. An artist that has always been on my radar since I first caught wind of him and his band in 2015 is Chuck Magid, or as I like to call him: “Chuck Magic.”
A Phoenix. From beautiful embers which eventually ash, arise a new flame which glows alone. It is stronger and brighter than ever before. From the rock n’ roll all-star national touring band, The Groove Orient, to what is now a rocking solo career on the rise beyond the skies, Chuck Magid has experienced music on many different levels. It helps being brought up in a home which appreciates both the natural side of music and the theoretical, mathematical side of it. Magid was inspired to study Jazz for four years at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. He is currently promoting his new single, “Broken Man” — singing about his personal experiences as a national touring rock n’ roller, longing for that “coming home kiss,” or that special someone whom he’s waited to see; waiting for him to come home. He is currently on his “Traveling Home Tour,” promoting his new album ‘Traveling Home’ (see review on page #47). You have my word — he is amazing. Get tickets to see him! @chuckmagid /// chuckmagid.com

For this style session, I had to keep in mind a special request from Chuck: if there was a squash blossom necklace around, he needed to be wearing it, and not for the style, but for the spirit. To his surprise, The Owl’s Attic had not one, but a few of the necklaces, so it was a go. From there, I centered everything around that turquoisestoned piece. One clothing item that was considered a rarity for him was the dark brown gator skin cowboy boots. Magid has made the common Chelsea boot a key part of his everyday style. Little do people know, his normal brand of boot is John Varvatos, which is typically considered expensive for most people. So, I knew he would at least appreciate the “finer things” and all the genuineness from the skin to the leather of the cowboy boots. The pastel blue squares in the button down shirt I chose for him was the perfect addition and fit right in between the dark denim blue overthrow and (light) turquoise stones around his neck. Getting to know Chuck Magid a little further, I found out that he swears by wearing black pants, which ended up being a nice touch with the custom top hat that he was already wearing — another staple of his.

The 1975 FINALLY returned to Florida this past November for their headlining performance at Florida Man Music Festival. This was their first appearance in Orlando since 2016, and it is very clear how much work they had done in the three years they were away. The Grammy nominated English “Pop Rock” band started in 2002, and almost two decades later has grown to be one of the most successful and influential groups for millennials. Through the years they have grown their following all over the world, and significantly in America. Hence ironic songs like “She’s American” and “I Like America, America Likes Me. ” This Florida Man performance was energetic and contriving, containing hits from all four of their studio albums, with a bigger presence, more confidence, and DANCING! Opening with “People,” the newest hit off of their unreleased album, Notes on a Conditional Form, set to be released in February 2020, was a kick-ass crowd mover! With this album, the band is taking a stronger direction towards incorporating critical messages within their music and visuals. The opening track titled “The 1975” features a spoken essay by Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2019, Greta Thunburg, who at 16 years old is the youngest person to ever be nominated for her work in environmental activism, thus inspiring the band to incorporate her messages into a musical campaign for social and political awareness. The band has been touring almost constantly for two years now whilst writing and recording new music, yet they played like it was their first and their last. No time being enough In my opinion, Especially not an hour and 15. The venue was perfect and the energy was electric. You could feel the intimacy between the fans and these songs, lead singer Matty Healy introducing their hit song “Chocolate” saying, “We’ve played this song so many times … but it still slaps so hard.” Words by Hannah Wistort Photos by Ebay /// @lizbatesphotography

A Year Of Lessons. As we approach the end of the
year (even the decade), it is a good time to look back and review. What were your best memories? And what were the lessons learned from both the good and bad? If you’re a reader of this magazine, I am going to assume there was music in your past and even more lies ahead. My year was, of course, filled with travel and music. And traveling for music. Surprise. It’s a combination which brings joy to my soul. It is something I plan to continue doing for the rest of my life. My year began with Umphrey’s McGee’s three-night run at Brooklyn Steel. It commenced on Valentine’s Day. What better way to spend Valentine’s than with the band I love? It was an amazing run. Each night elevated higher than the previous. Over the course of the run, I learned the value of a coat check during winter in the north. And one gentleman who remains unidentified learned the hard way not to over do it and end up naked, climbing the walls of the women’s restroom. As spring rolled around, I began traveling to tropical places. My first venture was a bachelor party in Costa Rica in March. Beaches, mountains, iguanas, toucans, and cervezas. I learned a few valuable lessons on this trip. The first was, in a group travel situation, someone has to take the reins and make solid plans. And be prepared for people to bail. The second lesson was, I am too old to party that hard for five days straight. Changes have since been made. I had multiple working trips to Puerto Rico as well as one just for fun. Before this year I had never been to Old San Juan. I immediately fell in love with the character and colors of it. I jumped right in and bought a guayabera shirt and got a pina colada at La Barrachina where they were invented. After receiving recommendations from multiple friends, I made my way to La Factoría. It has since become one of my favorite bars to which I have returned multiple times. Every night of the week there is salsa in the big room. La Factoría is world-renowned for their cocktails. And while enjoying them, it’s entertaining to watch tourists dance poorly to salsa. I am one of them. During my time on the island, I have reaffirmed previously learned lessons; I prefer tropical weather, I love pina coladas, and I need to take salsa lessons. June brought my annual pilgrimage to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Yet another three-night run of Umphrey’s McGee. The weather this year brought clouds and rain. Something I had not encountered in previous years. As I sat in the rain and hail on the first night I realized another lesson — I should have rented a car. It would have been a shelter from the rain and a storage locker for my heavy equipment. And it would have been around the same price as Uber to and from the venue. I would also have been allotted a great deal more freedom.
Working in the airlines is rough. It feels like I can never go on enough trips. Even with all the traveling I had already done earlier in the year, I felt the need for a big trip so I looked up the summer tour schedule for Jamiroquai. I had traveled to Athens, Greece to see them last year and
26
it was amazing. I was in need of more. This year I went to see them play in an ancient Roman theater in Vienne, France, and again on the coast in Antibes, France. Prior to the shows I celebrated Bastille Day in Lyon, France. Following the shows I bounced to Naples and Rome, Italy. A heat wave came through Europe while I was there and it was brutal. I learned a couple lessons. I would prefer not to travel to Europe in the summer because there are too many tourists and not enough air conditioning. On that note I learned the value of quickdry clothing which can be rinsed in the shower and hung up. They also tend to be lightweight. In addition, AirBnBs are more likely to have laundry than a hotel. These things are handy to know when trying to pack light. August brought more Umphrey’s, but this time in my home state. I was able to catch them at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg and The Amp in St. Augustine. Both outdoor shows in Florida in August. The night at Jannus confirmed a previously held theory of mine — if I bring a rain jacket it will not rain no matter what the forecast says. So to everyone else who was in attendance, you’re welcome. Not a drop. I also reaped the benefits of a past lesson — Jannus is too fun and lawless to be burdened with driving afterwards. That lesson was multiplied by a new lesson I learned — White Claw is fucking delicious and I can drink way more of them than I can beer. With the combination of those lessons I was incredibly happy I had decided to get a hotel room for the evening. September brought an annual family trip to a national park. For those unfamiliar, just after Labor Day is a great time for vacations. Flights are typically cheaper and parks are less crowded. The expression used in the parks is, “after Labor Day it’s all newly-weds and nearly-deads.” In that week I hiked over fifty miles in the mountains of Glacier National Park with heavy photo gear. I learned that hiking with alcoholic beverages can add weight, but as the hike goes on and the drinks go down, both my attitude and gear get lighter. It’s always nice to take a pause for the Claws. Oh, and while beers are less tolerable when they get warm, spiked seltzers are still very drinkable and refreshing. But if you really want to cut down on the weight, there is always whiskey.

October was Hulaween time. What a magical festival it was. Full of friends and laughs. A family reunion for a truly strange family. It was also rather hot this year which is not usually the case. A few years ago I bought a solar shower bag made for camping. I had never used it as I never really needed to at the Spirit of the Suwannee. There are showers provided throughout the park. But with the temperatures and humidity just as high as the attendance, the lines for the showers were rather lengthy. This year I learned the true value of being able to shower right at my campsite. With only a couple weeks left of the year, I am still not yet done traveling in 2019. I have one more musical trip ahead. It shouldn’t be hard to guess which band I’ll be chasing. Did you guess Umphrey’s? You genius. They are closing out the decade with a run at the Fillmore in Denver. Bringing the heat to the winter wonderland of the Rockies. There is also a Doom Flamingo show on the 29th. I learned in June that they put on a hell of a show. One I will not miss.
So what did you learn throughout the year? Did you see enough music? Did you travel enough? Are you still holding onto the regret of missing out on something? It’s a good time to start planning how to spend your next year so that in 366 days you will look back with a smile. Remember, you can still smile even if you’re broke from all the fun you had. Get out there and go somewhere. Do something cool. Tell me about it — matthew@showsigoto.com Just don’t ask me for a buddy pass.

Since 2001, Built 4 Speed (640 N Hillside Ave. Orlando, Fl. 32803) has been an Orlando staple. They have 15 artists currently working here, each who specializes in something different — an artist to cater to every style. “There is a strong loyalty within the shop. It’s like one big dysfunctional family and it’s always been nice to work with people who you have fun with, and that you trust to have your back.” — @johnherndonart
Do you find that there is a stigma/ judgment around women who are heavily tattooed? Thankfully tattoos are becoming more and more accepted everyday, however there are still people who have strong opinions about them. As far as being a woman with tattoos, I receive a lot of comments like, “ I like tattoos on men but it makes women look so cheap!” or “you won’t find a man to marry you if you keep covering yourself in tattoos!” or the classic, “you just do it for attention.” To all these people I have said and will always say again — I feel just as pretty with my rainbow skin. I look this way because it makes me happy. No exciting wild reason and you can fuck right off. :) Do women hold an equal status in this industry? We are lucky enough to work with good people who don’t hold that kind of prejudice, and the industry is definitely better than it has ever been. This being said, there
28
are still people in the tattoo community who believe tattooing is a “Boys Club” women shouldn’t be stepping into, or women shouldn’t be held in high regard. This is something that, with time and effort, will die more and more. How is it helpful to work with creative women daily? It is honestly something I am so thankful for. The women I work with are talented, hardworking women and they are a constant inspiration. We all support and push each other to do more kickass stuff than the day before. What does tattooing mean to you? It’s weird to explain but tattooing is like feeling at home to me. It’s all I want to do, everyday, all day. Everyone looks for the thing they are meant to do in life and when I was lucky enough to start doing this, it just clicked. I immediately went, “Oh. This. I will never love doing anything as much as I love this. This is where I was meant to go.” No matter how bad a work day might get, I’m always so happy that I have this.
CANADA /// @canada_tattoos
CELESTE /// @VERYGOODBREAKFAST Do you find that there is a stigma/ judgement around women who are heavily tattooed? I feel like there is stigma/judgement placed around anyone who is heavily tattooed. I’ve gotten used to being stared at sometimes, asked weird questions, and all that. I guess you could say it’s something I don’t personally pay attention to all that much. I don’t fucking care, but yes, tattooed people are sometimes treated differently than those who choose to not have art on their skin. It’s very strange to me. I feel like I’ve always been surrounded by more tattooed people than not tattooed people, so I often find myself thinking people with no tattoos are the real weirdos. I’m probably just as amazed and dumbfounded by their blank skin, as they are with my tattooed skin. Do women hold an equal status in this industry? In my short time tattooing I’ve been very lucky to work with people who treat me with respect, and as an equal. There are definitely still dudes out there who think women shouldn’t be tattooing, or saying shit like, “Women in tattoo shops are just there to look pretty, and fuck the other artists.” Literally—someone actually said that to me when I was an apprentice. There are still dudes out there sexually harassing coworkers and clients. Fortunately, I do not come across these people, ever. I guess it all depends on who you’re working with. Most of the men I’ve met in this industry are good people, but there are bad guys still out there. I’ve had run-ins with a couple of them, and they are terrible, disgusting people. I’m very glad I am not where they are. How is it helpful to work with creative women daily? It’s just a lot of fun. I love the women I work with. I suppose it is helpful in that some of the things I experience as a woman in this world are things that they also experience as women in this world. I feel like we can relate to each other on this level, and it brings forth a very comforting feeling. My lady coworkers are extremely talented beings, and I learn so much from just being around them everyday and watching them work. What does tattooing mean to you? Tattooing is something I’ve been interested in ever since my dad came home with his first tattoo. I was pretty young. Every time he went to get another one, I asked to go with, so I could watch him get tattooed. I’ve been drawing since I was about two years old, and once I realized people could draw on human skin I was just fascinated by it. It just started as an obsession when I was a young kid. It quickly became something I felt like I needed to do. I feel very fortunate to finally have the chance to be tattooing. It’s the best shit in the world for so many different reasons. I can’t really sum up how much it means to me, honestly. I keep learning and discovering more and more reasons to be stoked about it everyday.
IRINA /// @7OWLSOFFIRE Do you find that there is a stigma/judgment around women who are heavily tattooed? Originally I am from Russia, and there is still a large stigma, not only to women, but to people in general who are tattooed. People occasionally have very harsh reactions to seeing my tattoos, whether it’s snide remarks, or full out shouting rude statements. Although there is improvement with every new year, it is still something that happens and is a work in progress. How is it helpful to work with creative women daily? I am always pushed to do more and motivated to work harder. We all provide each other with motivation and support and they keep me from feeling alone. What does tattooing mean to you? Meeting new people and interacting with people has been something I feel like I struggle with. Tattooing is not only a beautiful art form that I love and respect, but it has helped me to meet and connect with people on a deeper level ... no pun intended. It gives me the opportunity to travel and branch out to meet all kinds of new people who otherwise I may never have had the chance to meet. In many ways it’s how I’ve connected to the world.

INTERVIEW WITH CHARLES FRIZZELL /// @BrokenStringsBrewery Tell me a little about how music plays into the theme and atmosphere of your brewery? Music plays into every aspect of our brewery’s theme — from the murals on the walls of some of our favorite musicians, to the names of all of our beers. We brew collaboration beers with local and national bands and have hosted music festivals like 11Eleven Fest and acoustic shows with Soulswitch and Leaving Haven. I love music just as much as beer, so it’s a perfect marriage. What was the first show you went to? Next show(s) you’re stoked to go to? First concert I ever went to was a Metallica tribute band back home in Ft Myers, FL back when I was 18. It’s a slow time of year for concerts but ironically, one of the next concerts I’m looking forward to is seeing Metallica play Welcome To Rockville Fest in Daytona along with Deftones and Dropkick Murphys! What is something you want to share about Broken Strings Brewing that people may not know (Hidden Gem)? I think the brewery by itself is a hidden gem — we are tucked away in an industrial area in Downtown Orlando, so we may not get the same kind of exposure if we were located in a trendy new neighborhood, but we like to think we are ahead of the curve and this will soon be a hot spot of creative businesses popping up. KIM PETRAS 40
Kicking off the show with a dramatic entrance, German singer Kim Petras opened up the show with her hot single “Clarity” of her debut album putting on a solo impressive performance with the entire crowd cheering loudly. The young 27-year-old released two successful albums this year, first off, her debut album on June 28, 2019 and then her second Halloween-themed album, ‘Turn Off The Light’ on October 1, 2019. It may not be spooky season anymore, but she made it feel like it was for a night. Following through with her set, she went on to perform some of her biggest tracks: “Close Your Eyes,” “Death by Sex,” “Do Me,” and even covered an acoustic version of “Human” by The Killers. The Plaza Live was filled with a loud enthusiastic crowd dancing away the night through her long performance. Petras’ pop catchy music allowed for a room full of all-time high-energy levels with everyone dancing and singing along. Her music provides an open space for LGBT+ teens to be free and have a chance to connect. I felt so welcome in the crowd with all the kind freely spirited fans. Her set was brimming with creativity when it came down to lighting, wardrobe changes, and dramatic sound effects adding to her aesthetics. Her wardrobe fascinated me with how well it went with her songs. During her performance of “Death by Sex,” Petras had a red latex suit with the word SEX spelled out on the lights. Alex Chapman opened up for Kim Petras’ headlining tour and did an amazing job hyping the crowd up with a mix of old 2000s and today’s music. The entire crowd was giving off so much energy for an opener — like I had never seen. Chapman is an LA-based songwriter & DJ with some of the best taste in mixed tracks. Petras may only be halfway through with her headlining US American “The Clarity Tour” but the energy was most definitely present. In the middle of her performance, she was quick to thank her fans repeatedly for coming out to support her. She surprised me when she mentioned how she used to perform in small venues at only 19 years old for a long time before she opened up for Troye Sivan on his tour in 2018—just one year ago. Kim Petras is succeeding and selling out huge venues all on her own. Kim Petras Live Review and Photos by Cindy Ros /// @cindyros_

Things are aglow for poppy powerhouse Whyte Tygers this Christmas. Whipsmart and pitch-perfect, our own folk/ indie/pop darlings’ latest is simply a triumph, and posts a new jewel in the crown of Orlando’s bustling music scene. The aptly titled ‘Here We Go’ is a bold, groove-filled opus; a searing fivesong nod-along that wastes no time on kitschy interludes or dulcet lulls when it can dazzle you with vibes. It’s short, but oh so sweet, and guaranteed to find longevity thru repeat trips to your ears. “Find Your Way Back” is an explosive intro to frontwoman Heather Lee’s vocal mastery; the eponymous second track is a dramatic, percussive, and hella-stylish bop; “Hooked on You” channels disco via VSCO, with equal parts contemporary funk and nostalgic, ass-shakingly good synth; and “Pop of Color” is an exercise in synesthesia – practically begging for a sexy companion piece where Bond girls swim thru technicolor and the sky is solid gold. Seeping in style and soul, Whyte Tygers succeed by simultaneously elevating a style of music that’s ultimately rare in local scenes like our own, and grounds a genre befuddled by A-list celebs and hyper-advertised wannabes. Brief as it may be, ‘Here We Go’ is everything pop should be: smart, sexy, and infectious, with none of the frills and all of the flavour. F.F.O. : Jenny Lewis, Annie Lennox, Florence & the Machine

Sad Halen – ‘frens’
Rarely does one come across a band as aptly titled as Sad Halen – a fuzzedout, shoegazy fusion of melancholy and roar that does more calculated plucking from the annals of alt-rock than anyone is probably giving them credit for. On ‘frens’, the moody trio shovel distortion over smart melodies and some legitimately crispy beats, and they do a fine job at cultivating the wall of sound and groove that laconic luminaries like Thurston Moore pioneered decades ago. Unfortunately, what ‘frens’ brings in power, it lacks in production quality and complexity. The mix is clumsy (aesthetics notwithstanding), and parts (namely vocals) are out of sync with the whole; there’s little variety from song to song, and a few rhythmic hiccups break the otherwise smooth, stoney drone. Don’t get me wrong, Sad Halen is the shit live, and ‘frens’ is by no means bad, but the album suffers from a compounding set of small missteps that, with any luck, Sad Halen will notice and promptly correct while they’re gazing shoe-ward. Carve some time out to catch Sad Halen on the stage this winter to see just what I mean. F.F.O. : Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr.

Chuck Magid – ‘Traveling Home’
Somewhere in Orlando, there’s a Rock n’ Roll messiah having his second coming on stage this evening. “Stop, stop and listen, cause I’m a man on a mission,” he howls, and every note of his self-titled, rebirth and re-brand is a testament. There’s a scramble, and twang, and a voice that feels like five different kinds of familiar is easing you into a simper, while the band riffs on and on and on … That voice is Chuck Magid, and O’, you’ve heard it before, but it’s brighter than ever on the tracks of ‘Traveling Home’. With his solo debut, the man has crafted a vessel for his own actualization, stripping away the jazzy overtures that we came to know him by in hazy basement sessions, and transforming all that funky acumen into raw, heart-strung Rock. Magid’s vocals shine on this new, Americana-tinted backdrop, with a charming, soulful sort of growl – not unlike Lemmy singing “Johnny B. Goode,” or James Brown does “Wango Tango.” It’s a wonderful thing. Now, you can ruminate on all those highfalutin words above, or you can just take my word for it: fans of hard, fast, good ol’ fashioned Rock n’ Roll need to take note, ‘cause Christmas comes early thanks to Chuck Magid. Check under your tree for ‘Traveling Home’ this December 21st. F.F.O. : Thomas Wynn and the Believers, The Groove Orient, Led Zeppelin

WELCOME TO THE ANNUAL
“SIGT BEST OF,”
A YEAR-END RECAP OF EVERYTHING WE LOVED IN 2019 The SIGT family includes everyone we meet at shows. The “I” in Shows I Go To represents all of us. It’s everyone who listens, feels, and goes to shows as a way of dealing with dark times, bright times, or just time in itself. We are not exclusionary. SIGT represents those who just want to go out and have a good night with friends and everyone who goes to shows alone. We are here to serve the community and share what we love — music. Let’s start with music that came from our home
— Central Florida. It’s incredibly awesome to see so much art produced in just one short year. Think of the hours spent practicing and perfecting these songs, preparing them for the recording process. It’s wild to see over 450 songs the Spotify playlist we created to pair with this list. If the release is on Spotify, it’s on the playlist. Listening on “shufFle” is highly recommended to ride the central Florida sound waves. Cheers!.

1. I’ve been the guitarist for Andrew W.K going into 20 years, and 2019 has been a great one. Playing Conan O’Brien again this year was a highlight for sure. /// 2. Our tour bus broke down in the mountains on our way to San Francisco. I believe the town was called W e e d . Within 30 minutes we’d picked up a Uhaul, and were tossing gear. We made it to the show and were able to play. There’s tons of stuff like that, and those are the things I really remember, and love. It’s intense, but our team is great. /// 3. This year I built a new studio. Writing and recording a new record with Intoxicated has been so rewarding. The new stuff is super heavy. I love the dudes I’m playing with, and the team we’ve built. Thrash is alive and well! /// 4. I’ll tell you, it’s a true gift to be able to travel, and learn, and experience so much, with close friends. /// 5. Last but not least, no more can it be said, “good festivals are only in Europe,” because there were so many great festivals we did in America this year where we were truly cared about. They were ran so well. All together this year has been sick, but also things are building, that can’t be stopped. We’re full blown charging 2020!

PERRY’S diddles
Category / Title
BY PERRY GOLDMAN
Reviewing Jeff Goldblum’s 2018 album,’The Capitol Studios Sessions’. Jeff also has a new album out, ‘I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This’. Enjoy them both! Do you remember the 1980 detective comedy TV series “Ten Speed and Brown Shoe” or Seth Brundle, the mad scientist in the 1986 film “The Fly”? But of course, you remember Ian Malcolm, the smug but genius mathematician in Jurassic Park? Well, it turns out that all the above characters were all played by Jeff Goldblum (actor) who also just happens to be an extremely talented Jazz musician and this album’s piano man, a seriously accomplished pianist. So you hit play. Suddenly and in a few beats, your transported to a dim lit café in Greenwich village. You’re sitting with your lover of whom you’re transfixed on. This elegant rhythmic melody is being played on piano and floating gently through the air of the venue. The other musicians start to play a groove and this timeless composition comes together at their fingertips. You’ve heard the song somewhere before which is quite possible as some of the songs on this album date back as far as 1936, like Duke Ellington’s “Caravan.” So now you’re snapping your fingers along with the cool beat and jubilant melodies. The song and the moment are now synonymous in your brain’s memory bank. The Song will always evoke this grand moment in time with your special someone (well anyway, that’s my typical experience).
Goldblum’s performance is flawless, as are all the playing of the musicians on this “Live” collection of gems. The Live aspect of course might connect you to the artist more. Goldblum and his collaborators inject playful microphone banter that certainly adds to the mood of the recording. Mildred Snitzer’s voice is commanding, smokey, and of course, sexy. She’s a true song stylist. Her interpretation of Nate King Cole’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right” is playful and has a certain spontaneity that I love. Then Haley Reinhart (American Idol, Post Modern Jukebox) jumps in on “Gee Baby” with her Billy Holiday vulnerability. Even Sarah Silverman gets into the act. And she’s good! As I expected, the performance of this fine collection of songs took me through an emotional ride from happy and high to blue and nostalgic. Of course, the nostalgic element goes hand in hand with my years on this planet. Add this fun Jeff Goldblum effort to your Spotify playlist or purchase the CD for yourself or a friend. I guarantee you’ll be transported to a unique time listening to this wonderful recording. So enjoy some of the best renditions of timeless Jazz classics from the true “Cool Era”.
“A BIG F*CK YOU TO WHOEVER STOLE MY BIKE /// Took a source of happiness from my life /// I should call my mom and tell her I’m alright.” Beneath the hair follicles on the happy middle finger of this sick Slumberjack song, is forgiveness and shifted perspective — a place you couldn’t appreciate until you left. “I walked out, came back, [now] it’s a pleasure.” Most of my favorite songs tell me everything is going to be alright. There’s distinct hope. And a little laugh under your breath at just how fucked up things have to seem in order to shift your outlook on them. Things aren’t always as bad as they seem. But we’re real good at making them look like shit sometimes — a relationship, city, parent, sandwich, etc. “I’m Alright” is the first single off an album titled ‘Big Shoots’ coming March 2020. Video was filmed in Pensacola, Florida.

“I’m Alright” is a banger out of the gate. Close your eyes and see a room full of friends lighting fire to the PBR sprinklers sporting smiles, clench your teeth, and dance. This is a good song to bounce to.

Lots of shifts are happening this month and it is your job to witness the changes and be there for those who may struggle with new transitions. This is also a great month for you to study up on finance. Get super clear on where you’re at financially and set financial goals. The 22nd–25th should be particularly good money days for you!
CANCER: It’s very important that you take care
of yourself this month, Cancer. The Full Moon and lunar eclipse that occurs in your own sign on the 10th will really shake things up. It is important that you stay grounded and give yourself plenty of time to rest. It is also highly recommended that you give yourself a detox the first half of this month. This will give you energy to prosper once things smooth out after the 20th. This year will be incredibly social and fun for you, but only if you take time to nurture yourself this month first. Take extra good care of yourself on the 7th–10th.
LEO: This will be a pleasant month for you,
Leo! Things are picking up and you’re happy with where things are going both personally and in business. You will find yourself focused on health this month which is great for you. The Full
Moon and lunar eclipse on the 10th will shake up some spiritual beliefs. Now is a great time to get clear on the spiritual path you wish to take. Towards the end of this month you will be feeling more social than usual, roll with it. Finances are in your favor this month and you are encouraged to enjoy yourself. The final few days of the month should be particularly special for you.
VIRGO: This will be a very smooth month for
you, Virgo. You will feel at the top of your game in work and finance. The Full Moon and lunar eclipse on the 10th will bring some extra excitement into your life. Prepare for certain relationships to get tested during this period. Everything will work itself out as it’s supposed to, you’ll find you won’t be stressing over it. Money will begin to show up for you in unexpected ways after the 20th. Start calling in unexpected abundance now! Pay close attention to your dreams at the end of the month, especially on the 27th! There is an important message there for you.
LIBRA: It’s very important that you take extra
good care of yourself this month, Libra. There’s a lot going on in both family life and business and nothing will get resolved if you don’t take care of yourself. Do only what you absolutely have to do this month. Extra details can wait until later. The Full Moon and lunar eclipse occurs in your career house, so approach work delicately over the period of the Full Moon. Observe and take notes. Don’t take any immediate action. Schedule a massage or Reiki session and hold off on the ‘doing’ of things. This month is a great month for introspection and observance. Next month will be time for action.
SCORPIO: This will be a powerful month for
you, Scorpio. The beginning of this month encourages you to implement personal changes within. If you have been struggling with self image or matters with personal growth, the energy to implement the changes you’ve been wanting is supporting you. It’s very important you tend to those issues now because your social life will pick up at the end of the month and you will either feel great about the personal work you’ve done or you will find yourself beating yourself up for not making changes. You have all the power to make the changes you want, Scorpio. Get on it! The 9th and 10th are particularly good days for working on yourself.
SAGITTARIUS: This should be a great month for you, Sagittarius. You will be feeling happygo-lucky and super independent all month long, especially the first few
days of the month. This is wonderful, but stay mindful. Sometimes when you are on a personal independence streak, you have a tendency to lash out towards others who challenge you. Remind yourself to keep having fun and don’t take things so seriously all the time! It is important to take extra care of yourself around the 10th when the Full Moon and lunar eclipse occur. It is advised that you stay home and chill out during this time frame. Detox and lay low. If you can do that, you’ll be glowing the rest of the month ahead. Expect a financial surprise too. (In a good way!)
CAPRICORN: It’s time to look to others for
inspiration and guidance, Capricorn. You have been on a personal independence streak which is great, but it’s time to reconnect with your people. Your people need your attention and grounding energy and you need the creative inspiration they give you. Slow things down this month and spend quality time with those you really look up to. There is a lot to be learned this month that will inspire you in both life and biz in the months ahead. The 22nd and 23rd should be particularly good days for you.
AQUARIUS: This is a big month for you, Aquarius. Spiritual curiosity and unexplained, mystical phenomena will occur all month long. It is time to really dive deep into your beliefs and spiritual practices. Do all the things that bring you joy this month. Your main focus this month should be making sure everything you do feels right and fulfilling. There is likely to be some conflict at work which is why you need to personally support your emotions as much as possible. Don’t let work bring you down this month—you are learning important lessons in order to significantly grow in business this year. It’s all a part of the plan!
PISCES: This will be a fantastic month for
you, Pisces. Career and finances are looking better than ever and you are feeling rejuvenated and social. The Full Moon and lunar eclipse on the 10th may shake things up a little, but you will enjoy the excitement. You’re ready for a fun challenge. Spirituality is a big theme this month for you. You may have taken a break from spiritual practices but this month you are getting back in routine with a refreshed perspective. Expect to be growing and glowing all month long! Challenge yourself to study something new. The 18th and 19th will be particularly good days for you.

High-ideas By Big Tim Murphy Go to Red Lobster — Order the endless shrimp w/ baked potato. Eat the inside of the potato. Order shrimp scampi. Remove shrimp. Pour garlic butter in potato, fill with shrimp. Take it home. Right before you evacuate the shrimp inside you, set the oven to bake at 200 degrees and put the potato in there. It’ll be perfect by the time you’re out. /// @bigtimmycomic
