A word from our editor Dear Reader, As I write, we’re just off from September’s starting line, and it seems we’re racing flat out into the autumn. Where did the summer go?!
contributor Ruth Chamberlain has often reminded me of this through her stunning portrayals, and this issue’s installment is no different.
Lots of our readers have been incredibly busy all summer, predominantly with shows, but with other disciplines too. As the summer sun fades and the shows slow down, I’m sure we’ll see the other disciplines come to the fore – something I am looking forward to seeing. Nevertheless, there are, as ever, some super Performance Ponies to see, as well as some wonderful show moments! Not least, the one we have on the cover! What a brilliant photo!
Over the winter, I’m making it my mission to find out more. When they set in, the cold long nights won’t be accompanied by a novel, but by something a little more educational! In the meantime, though, I’m going to enjoy what’s left of summer, love every second at HOYS, and look forwards to hearing from you all…
While we’re on the subject of showing, please take a moment to consider the showing awards run by our sister magazine, Showing World. We’ve included the categories in this magazine. Nominations will close shortly after HOYS, and I’d dearly love to see a glut of native nominations for various categories. It’s not that I’m biased… Once nominations are in, they will go to an independent panel to decide on the finalists, who will be open to public vote. I’m going to stress now, it’s not the number of nominations a pony, breeder, rider, or handler gets that counts at this point, it’s the quality of the nomination. Whether you are nominated or not, we are guaranteeing an festive and excellent end of season party, so please do come along!

Editing the magazine has forced me to delve deeper into the heritage and history of our native breeds and the fundamentals of type. It’s something I have been pondering a lot. As much as I love watching the glamorous examples that we have in the showring, I must admit that I have an ever-increasing appreciation of those ponies who live as nature intended on our mountains, our moorlands, hills, fells and dales. I’ve never been much of one for the rugged man, but the sheer hardiness and rugged beauty of these ponies is bringing out the romantic in me! It strikes me that while our sport is evolving – both in the showring as well as in the broader equestrian world – we must not allow our own need for modern home comforts to cloud our judgement and influence decisions relating to these breeds. We cannot lose their hardiness and their pluckiness, the essence of these ponies. Regular
