A word from our editor Dear Reader, As I write, we’re just off from September’s starting line, and it seems we’re racing flat out into the autumn.

Where did the summer go?!

contributor Ruth Chamberlain has often reminded me of this through her stunning portrayals, and this issue’s installment is no different.

Lots of our readers have been incredibly busy all summer, predominantly with shows, but with other disciplines too. As the summer sun fades and the shows slow down, I’m sure we’ll see the other disciplines come to the fore – something I am looking forward to seeing. Nevertheless, there are, as ever, some super Performance Ponies to see, as well as some wonderful show moments! Not least, the one we have on the cover! What a brilliant photo!

Over the winter, I’m making it my mission to find out more. When they set in, the cold long nights won’t be accompanied by a novel, but by something a little more educational! In the meantime, though, I’m going to enjoy what’s left of summer, love every second at HOYS, and look forwards to hearing from you all…

While we’re on the subject of showing, please take a moment to consider the showing awards run by our sister magazine, Showing World. We’ve included the categories in this magazine. Nominations will close shortly after HOYS, and I’d dearly love to see a glut of native nominations for various categories. It’s not that I’m biased… Once nominations are in, they will go to an independent panel to decide on the finalists, who will be open to public vote. I’m going to stress now, it’s not the number of nominations a pony, breeder, rider, or handler gets that counts at this point, it’s the quality of the nomination. Whether you are nominated or not, we are guaranteeing an festive and excellent end of season party, so please do come along!

Editing the magazine has forced me to delve deeper into the heritage and history of our native breeds and the fundamentals of type. It’s something I have been pondering a lot. As much as I love watching the glamorous examples that we have in the showring, I must admit that I have an ever-increasing appreciation of those ponies who live as nature intended on our mountains, our moorlands, hills, fells and dales. I’ve never been much of one for the rugged man, but the sheer hardiness and rugged beauty of these ponies is bringing out the romantic in me! It strikes me that while our sport is evolving – both in the showring as well as in the broader equestrian world – we must not allow our own need for modern home comforts to cloud our judgement and influence decisions relating to these breeds. We cannot lose their hardiness and their pluckiness, the essence of these ponies. Regular

Report by Bronwyn Ward Photos by 1st Class Images The sun shone over the beautiful grass rings for four fantastic days of competition at the Great Yorkshire Show, with competitors arriving at Harrogate from across the country.

The show always provides a fantastic display of our native breeds, with all sections well supported. Day two was the turn of the first section of Mountain and Moorland ponies in hand, with the multigarlanded Lincolnshire Show supreme in hand winner Treworgan Shooting Star claiming another Dartmoor championship shown by William Wright. A strong Fell section championship was won

by Carrock Daenerys, shown by John Cockbain, with Barbara Potter’s Dalefoot Yazz finishing reserve champion.

classes. One of the strongest classes of the show was the lead rein Mountain and Moorland, with 31 combinations forward and the class having to be split.

It was a one-two for Dartmoor ponies in the HOYS lead rein class, a fantastic showcase for the breed. Finley Clay rode his mother, Heather Clay’s Craig Elenor produced Springwater Tactician to the top spot, and eventual section champion.

Although it was only this pony’s second appearance in the ring this year, it was the second HOYS qualifier win for the mannerly pony, who was bred by Nicola Tyler.

Beautifully home produced by owner Amanda Wilding and ridden by her daughter Alyssia, second placed Nappa Pericles picked up their golden ticket to HOYS qualification and stood reserve champion.

More home-produced success came in the open ridden classes, with Welsh Section B Cadlanvalley Buzz Lightyear [Buzz] winning his third qualifier class of the season. Despite only being five years old, Buzz floated around the electric White Rose ring with his owner Myranda Houton, who describes winning at the Great Yorkshire “as a dream come true!”

After a full day of judging over 250 ponies, five-time HOYS finalist, and current reigning Highland winner Lochlands Gypsy Baron set the ring alight with his breathtaking gallop following his win, large breeds championship and overall supreme ridden Mountain and

Moorland, The reserve supreme spot went to the champion from the small breeds section, the Sharn Linney produced former HOYS, RIHS and London International Horse Show contender, Thistledown El Toro, who was victorious in the Welsh Section A section with his new rider for this season, 13-year-old Daisy May Allen.

Fell Pony Society Breed Show Report by Claire Simpson Photos by Lucy Jones Photography The Fell Pony Society, which is celebrating its Centenary this year, held its 49th Breed show in the beautiful surroundings of Dalemain House near Ullswater, Cumbria.

The Society welcomed members from Denmark, Sweden, the USA, and the Netherlands, whose daughter Fell Pony Society (NFPS) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, which was marked with a presentation of a beautiful commemorative rosette and the Centenary book ‘A Century of Fells’; the NFPS presented FPS President Christine Morton with a beautiful hand-painted plate to record the joint celebrations. The Society also invited all past Presidents to join the celebrations. There was a happy celebratory atmosphere, and many tourists also joined the crowd to watch the ponies competing in the afternoon sun.

Bert Morland reigned supreme with his six-year-old Lunesdale Brown Sugar, shown by Lily Gaulton. This much admired, very typey mare, came out on top in the very strong class of in hand mares 4-7 years old, which was judged by Roy Ottink from the Netherlands, whose decision was then ratified in the judging of the supreme championship later in the day. Gilly Chippendale’s lovely yearling, Lammerside Hazel, took the overall reserve supreme. Gilly also won the class for two-year-old fillies with Hazel’s elder sister Lammerside Eclipse.

Other winners in hand included Frances Hoggarth and Banksgate Elidor who took the geld mares over eight years and reserve champion female. John Cockbain won the class for three-year-old fillies with Carrock Daenerys, and Edwin Winder won the trophy for the best three-yearold bred by a native heath breeder with Dalewin Willow.

and Willow all representing this lovely stallion. Eileen Walker’s prolific Rackwood Magic won the group class for mare progeny, represented by Rackwoods Aurora, Black Magic and Magic’s Finale.

A previous champion, the beautiful Murthwaite Magic Moment won the veterans in hand for Joanna Minns.

It was lovely to see six foals forward on the day, the Potter family won the classes for the mare with colt foal at foot with Murthwaite Westerly, and the best overall foal with her colt foal. Eileen Walker won the class for the mare with a filly foal with Rackwood Black Magic, whose foal, Rackwood Hermione won the filly foal class.

The in-hand classes for geldings and youngstock were judged by David Wilkinson who awarded the in hand gelding championship to Sally Atkinson’s ten-year-old Catterlen Gary’s Lad with Courtney Savage’s four-year-old homebred gelding Deepghyll Mighty Joe in reserve. Matthew Fearon’s colt Setmabanning Poldark won the yearling class and the youngstock reserve championship. Patsy Drake’s Crowtree Gideon won the class for three-year-old geldings.

In the ridden rings the overall championship went to Olivia Swales, who had a fabulous day with Dalefoot Amber II; this lovely twelveyear-old mare won the open riding class for mares and the Horse of the Year Show qualifier under judges Beverley Hodgson and Chris Grant; but having already qualified, the ticket went to Townend Faithful and Belle Errington-Anderson. Reserve champion ridden, and best young handler, went to Hollie McGauley and Rundales Trooper, winners of the class for juniors under 18 years and the junior ridden championship; with Georgina Mallinson and Cargenwater Casanova in reserve.

Other juniors winning their classes included sisters Sarah and Mary Bell who won the best turned out and lead rein classes with Lownthwaite Heidi under judge Melissa Kreuzer, who had travelled from the USA. Imogen Cockbain won the first ridden class with Carrock Elsa. Emily Cheetham won the under 14 years class with Bracklinn Sam and also won the young judges class.

Ivy Wrigley made everyone smile by winning the fancy dress class with Murthwaite Ripley at just three years old.

The novice ridden championship went to Anna Metcalfe with Unwins Storm, who had also won the traditional ridden for stallions and geldings; with Bethan Lewis and novice mare winner, Lunesdale Forget Me Not, in reserve.

Other winners in the ridden classes included Moathouse Jack The Lad and Mandy Jackson who won the nursery novice; Townend Elfin and Abby Cockbain took the mares traditional walk and trot; Rosefell T Reg and Alex Robinson won the open stallions/geldings.

Georgina Callister and Heather Prescott judged the working hunter classes where Setmabanning Danny Boy warmed up for the HOYS ridden class by winning the novice working hunter pony class and taking the championship under Sarah Howarth, with Bracklinn Sam ridden by Monika Indrova in reserve. Other classes in the working hunter pony were the beginners which was won

by Imogen Cockbain and Carrock Elsa; intermediate won

by Georgina Ellis and Harthouse Hillman; and the open which was won by Greenholme Dillon and Anet Safandova.

Louise Younger had an excellent day winning the veteran ridden and two of the dressage classes, judged by Tracey Fox, with Wellbrow Norman taking the ridden class and Prelim 12 and Wellbrow Dodger winning the Novice 24, while Juliet Huddleston took the Introductory with Rosefell T Reg. Judge Sue Millard chose Malc Hogg and Midtown Jemima to win the driving class, and Flo Goodbrand-Lloyd won the cone driving with Hades Hill Perry. Perry had competed

in the driving class as part of Tom Lloyds team of four in hand, which is believed to be the first team of four to compete at the Breed show. Tom has just put the team together this summer and they made a very impressive sight.

Russell Sutcliffe judged the foot classes where Sue Wardle won the class for the pony with the best set of feet shod with Bybeck Jasper, shod by Kyle Doherty; and Georgina Ellis won the unshod class with Harthouse Hillman.

AN UPDATE FROM...

Janine Paterson A self-confessed Native Nut! Wow what a great time we had a the NPS championships. Lahinch Teddy and Blakehill Master were both on form and Sharon and I had a blast! What a treat to jump some Graham Barclay courses!

Having trekked up to the Royal Highland Show in 2019 with Teddy to jump such a super course that was beautifully dressed from start to finish, I was really excited to see him as one of the course builders at NPS champs. Even in a relatively small space, he didn’t disappoint! Every class in that ring had a different course set, fences were moved around, and they were proper championship standard courses suitable for the level, across all three days. Please, NPS, invite Graham back next year! Personally, I would love him to build the HOYS mountain and moorland working hunter pony track next time, as us “southerners” don’t get to experience his magic very often, if at all!

Blakehill Master – Dex – was really the star of the show. Three working hunter pony classes brought three mega clear rounds!

The highlight being third in the 143cm section of the HOYS section, with the highest jump mark (19/20)!! At only six years old, he really is a remarkable pony.

He was placed in both his finals and really loved staying away!

Teddy was second in the open final and just rubbed a pole in the HOYS; he loved being back at Malvern and jumped well despite the firm ground.

I’ve been going to the champs since I was knee high to a grass-hopper and over the years, I can’t help but feel it has slightly lost its sense of occasion. I remember being

chosen to meet HRH Princess Margaret whilst riding Huw, my section B. We chatted for five minutes and to my mum’s disappointment, I couldn’t remember anything of what was said when asked by a reporter straight after!

It used to be such an achievement to qualify and compete in a final there. Now the classes run very swiftly without much acknowledgement of the achievement of winning or being placed. Personally, I would really like to see the all the championships for the working hunter finals to be held in the jumping ring not the conformation area. In there, you have more space to show off, a decent gallop could be seen, and I think they would feel really special and have more atmosphere.

I know time is precious, but maybe day one could run some qualifying classes and day two and three solely hold finals and HOYS classes. There’s almost too much going on in my opinion, with rings then running late and overlapping the evening performance.

The other disappointment for me was the mission to promote healthy weight ponies. In essence, it’s fantastic! However, the working hunter pony classes were excluded. For ponies jumping, it is paramount that they are a healthy weight and fit for the job, so I think it would be great to make a thing about it. Perhaps a championship at the end of the champs for ponies deemed optimal weight across all the classes, would be a great initiative.

All in all, the champs were really enjoyable, and it was fantastic to see it so busy. Still,

just a couple of tweaks and it would be even greater in my opinion!

Teddy made the long trip to Frickley Park to try his luck for a Badminton grassroots ticket at BE90 level. He really is the most generous pony, with ground conditions not ideal and a long journey to boot, he was mega in all three disciplines, finishing eighth on his dressage score. We have to wait until after Chillington Hall Area Festival in September, to hear if that was enough to qualify. We’re crossing our fingers. We are also having a shot at getting a BE100 ticket there, so all systems go with Teddy!

Dex is going to be concentrating on his eventing now that the ground is improving; I’ve got an exciting plan with him, so fingers crossed for that too.

Roo hasn’t seemed himself for some time, so he’s on the bench atm, while I get to the bottom of his lacklustre performance. After 11 years together, I know him very well and I’m sure something is niggling him, hopefully we can get to the bottom of it.

Dorset life is as crazy as ever; I’ve been overrun with lovely ponies that I’ve been trying to fit in before the weather turns – “make hay while the sun shines,” as the saying goes. Although, there’s still plenty of time for early morning beach rides; the sea really works wonders for their legs and fitness especially with the ground so hard.

Dex and Teddy have hugely benefitted from their frequent visits this summer.

A jam-packed month ahead now, for the last events and shows of the season; I’m really not ready for winter yet!

Showring Stars Father and Son Head for HOYS Eyarth Braveheart and his son Copella Lanark have both qualified for the Open Welsh Section B final at Horse of the Year Show 2022.

This will be Eyarth Braveheart’s sixth trip to the NEC having qualified at Denbigh and Flint Show ridden by Hannah Atkinson.

Braveheart has been one of the most consistent Welsh Bs on the circuit for a number of years. Owned by Jessica Regan and her mother Carolyn Cox since he was three weeks old, he has now qualified for HOYS under five different riders, achieving a place at the final every year - including second in 2015.

Copella Lanark picked his ticket up at Stoneleigh Show ridden by nine-year-old Charlotte Fuller. A new combination this year, this will be the seven-year-old gelding’s debut trip to HOYS. Freddie, as he is known at home, was a Royal Welsh Show winner as a yearling with his breeder Carolyn Cox before going to the Waxwing stud in Scotland on lease. He was expertly broken by Lauren Brill as a four-year-old and had a very successful novice season before being sold to Greta Fuller.

This will Charlotte’s first trip to HOYS but she said, “I’m not worried, Freddie always looks after me and is such a good boy”.

Lars Loved at First Sight Claire Connor’s Lars V.’t Zand won his standard Shetland stallion class and stood overall Standard Shetland champion at Aintree Inhand Championship Show. It was actually Lars’ show ring debut at Aintree, and Claire explained that she took him “purely as a practice run ahead of the Shetland Pony Society Breed Show”.

Claire imported Lars from the Netherlands as a lightly handled two-year-old colt alongside her Latijn V.D. Helling, who has absolutely stormed the ridden scene this year standing champion at the Royal Highland among other accolades. Lars was intended as a future stud stallion for Claire’s Lancashire based stud.

He has spent the 2021 and 2022 breeding seasons on lease to Champlers Stud covering

mares and only returned home at the beginning of August this year. Claire explained: “He will remain with ourselves for the 2023 breeding season to run with a selection of mares before being broken to ride in the hope of him coming out under saddle for the 2024 season”. He is by four times Honorary Champion ‘Enrique V. Gelre’ (2017 - 2020). “I’ve loved his sire since first setting eyes on him and came across Lars at Martin and Laura Kramps Stud following a visit whilst over for Hedel Market in October 2019. There was just something about him and I knew I had to try and tempt Martin to part with him,” said Claire. “Thankfully after a little persuasion a sale was agreed and Lars joined us in December 2019”.

Bell is a Belle!

Native Pony’s own Shetland correspondent Kate Hampton’s coloured Shetland mare, Beeftub Bell Emileo [Belle] has had a busy few months.

The eight-year-old piebald is a granddaughter Womble of Crafton, who also sired the very successful Brinleyview Camanchee. She was backed and ridden away by Lilly Walker, 14, and has continued to be brought on by Lilly.

The pair made a great start to their partnership winning the novice class at the NPS Great British In-hand and Performance Show last autumn. This spring, Belle qualified for the RIHS at Staffordshire County show at only her fifth show and went on to give a good account of herself at the final, belying her lack of ring experience.

Sine then, they have been ‘knocking on the door’ in HOYS qualifiers with some strong placings.

Lilly now shares the ride with younger sister Evie Walker.

Evie and Belle recently won the mountain and moorland first ridden class at Minsterley Show, before Lilly took back the reins to secure qualification for the BSPS Heritage Semi Final, in a hopeful bid for a spot at the London International Horse Show in October.

Most recently, Evie and Belle had a superb time at the Shetland Breed Show, winning the cradle stakes and working hunter pony championship!

Showing just how versatile these little ponies can be, Kate also started breaking Belle to harness but her driving career has taken a back seat over the summer due to her ridden commitments.

Annie Powers To Top After almost three years away from Builth Wells’ hallowed turf, Welsh breeders and exhibitors came in their droves to the Royal Welsh to see mares dominate most championships both in-hand and ridden.

Glynwyn Annie Powers delighted handler Scott Gibbons and the extended Heppenstall-Gibbons family team when they received the ultimate accolade for any Welsh breeder, the supreme in-hand title, bagging themselves a ticket to the Price Family Supreme championship at HOYS. The six-year-old section C mare was bred

by Kellie Heppenstall, and was shown

by Kellie’s husband Scott. A truly family affair, spectators also saw the couple’s son, Kyle take a turn to fly up the front of the grandstand with Annie. Her sire, renowned stock-getter Glynwyn Gideon is a former male champion at the Royal Welsh, and she is out of Glynwyn Vespa.

The reserve section C title went to Deryk Dykes with his own and his partner Joanne Nicholson’s Crossfield Casino (Crossfield Dannyboy x Cadfach Request), who won the two-year-old colt class, youngstock and male championships en route to the final showdown with Annie Powers. The reserve youngstock was awarded to the winner of the three-year-old colt class, Maygem The Ringmaster (Moorcroft The Master x Riverbank Danielle) owned and shown by Carl Costello. It was just the beginning of an excellent two days of showing for the Costello family, who almost realised their dream of winning at

Crossfields Casino shown by Deryk Dykes the Royal Welsh with a homebred when junior brood mare Bluehaven Little Miss Perfect stood second. However, the family’s ‘cloud-nine’ moment did arrive just a few classes later when they won the filly foal and overall foal title with Bluehaven Little Miss Fabulous.

Shane Rogers was delighted to finally secure a red Royal Welsh rosette having stood second an impressive but frustrating fourteen times. Shane handled Rhian Roberts’ Rhencullen Pretty P (Synod Rock Music x Fronarth Red Print) to top the senior section C brood mare class, much to her delight and surprise! The pair went on to win the coveted Paddock Dawn award for the best section C brood mare, an award that incidentally, was originally given by the Heppenstall family.

The Bandit rise to the top and take the best stallion award over Nicole Wayman’s junior stallion, Starlans Sun-Ray. Although not of their own prefix, the stallion championship demonstrated a strong Donys influence, with Bandit being sired

by Donys Llawen, and Sun-Ray being out of Donys Lucy Locket, also by Donys Llawen. Interestingly, second placed junior, Leebron Thomas O’Malley owned

by Tony Lee and family formed a further connection, with his dam Abergavenny Glamour Cat also being sired by Llawen.

The second rosette was a welcome boost for the Lee family after a generator fault caused a barn fire that resulted in tragedy and multiple losses. “Three weeks ago, we couldn’t face coming,” said Tony, “so it was great to see him do so well.”

Nevertheless, it was the Donys Llawen sired Donys Importance that clinched the sire ratings award in the section Cs.

All Hail Hailey It was a poignant week for the Jones and Reed family. Whilst his absence was keenly felt, there was no doubt ‘Geraint Nebo’ was with grand-daughters Catryn and Lowri in spirit as both brought home a share of the spoils. It was a poignant week for the Jones and Reed family. Whilst his absence was keenly felt, there was no doubt ‘Geraint Nebo’ was with grand-daughters Catryn and Lowri in spirit as both brought home a share of the spoils. Stephen Williams’ Rhesfair prefix was victorious in two classes. Kevin Moy’s Rhesfair Lady Millions beat Chris Piper’s Rhesfair Lady Jane to the top spot in the junior barren mare class, but it was yearling filly Rhesfair Dangerous Lady that proved the biggest threat as she claimed the reserve youngstock and again looked a picture in the female championship handled by Deryk Dykes. However, she was beaten to the reserve female spot by Dora Wyn Jones and her mother, Shan’s homebred Blackhill Piccolo nine-year-old, Islyn Purdey, who had won the senior broodmare class. The pair later went on to claim the reserve overall accolade, much to Dora’s delight.

Ann Jones was absolutely delighted that her last-minute decision to grab her shirt and tie from the back of the wardrobe and show her pride and joy paid off. She showed Friarly Genveave to win the senior barren mare class. Following in her footsteps, son Thomas Jones won the twoyear-old section C filly class with Menai Radiant Lady, sired by prolific stallion, Menai Calon Lan.

Hailey is sired by Springbourne Capricorn, who also shared in the glory not only as sire ratings champion, but also as judge Judith Reed’s eventual male champion in the capable hands of Mark Kilbey. The plucky section A stallion is leased from the Singles stud in Holland. Since joining the Kilbeys at their Idyllic stud at the end of 2018, Capricorn has enjoyed countless successes, including an impressive four reserve championships in Cuddy/ Price Family supreme final qualifiers. Now 11 years old, the Cascob Red Kite son went on to take the best stallion award over Rod Lewis’ winning junior stallion, Cwmmeudwy Bonwr, and also sired the reserve male champion, Idyllic Spectre. Two-year-old Spectre has inherited his father’s sprightly demeanour and extravagant step. He was shown by a delighted Ashley Oldroyd who co-owns him with Dan Williamson. The pair’s own Danash prefix also came to the fore when Danash Polly’s Promise was led by Sophie Curry to win the HOYS mountain and moorland lead rein class under Sophie Evans.

Hayley and Julian Williams’ week got off to a shaky start when Chloe Taylor’s two-year-old section C colt, Citadel Toy Soldier slipped his bridle and made a bid for freedom having been pulled second with Julian. However, colt foal Tolly Never Say Never saved the day taking champion section A foal for the couple, repeating his grand-father Cascob Red Kite’s feat.

One For The Boys The Sandy Anderson’s Thistledown prefix reached several excellent placings across the A and B sections, with Thistledown Beckie Downie performing best of the section As, claiming the three-year-old filly class.

However, it was imported colt, Kallared Heartbeat that set pulses racing and reached the highest of Sandy’s entries. The threeyear-old was shown by Liesel Mead to top the youngstock and male championships en route to the section B tricolour, being the only male champion of the four sections to go on to claim the overall title this year.

Their fun didn’t stop there with the Rhoson Amlyn colt also getting the nod in the prestigious Tom and Sprightly Cup between the four Welsh champions.

Bred by Mia Andersson, Liesel spotted Heartbeat on a Facebook post and instantly alerted Sandy to him. Liesl’s delight and appreciation for her ‘find’ was evident in her ebullient, grateful pats and her broad smile. Interestingly, he was the only male to take an overall championship across the four Welsh sections. In second place in the three-year-old colts was another of Sandy Anderson’s exhibits, homebred Thistledown Hakka, shown by his producer, Craig Eleanor.

In reserve for the breed tricolour was the winning barren mare and female champion, Ben Spoor’s Eyarth Yaris.

The Rhoson Adonis mare pipped her paternal half-sister to the female accolade.

This was the Netherlands-based Hoeke family’s winning two-year-old filly, Eyarth Honolulu, (Rhoson Adonis x Eyarth Titania) also produced by Liesl Mead.

Though not featured in the overall championship, Gareth Robert’s Phylberns stud scored a hattrick of wins and had plenty to celebrate. Yearling filly, Phylberns Aurora, by Eyarth Throwa topped her lineup, and her paternal halfbrother, Phylberns Baloo also topped his for new owner Andrew Butler. Aurora’s dam, Rotherwood Rambling Rose also bagged a red rosette in the senior broodmare class.

The ten-year-old out of Milltop Rosebud is by the prolific Lemonshill Top Note.

A Lotta Love for Loti Despite breeding winners, female and male championships, the overall tricolour had previously eluded the Lloyd family’s Geler stud until this year. Senior broodmare, Geler Loti (Llechfryn Ffrwydryn x Geler Heti) has enjoyed form at the Royal Welsh before, standing reserve female champion in 2015, but this year she romped through the best broodmare, female and overall championships ably shown by Gerallt Lloyd on behalf of his father, Will Lloyd who handled her foal.

Martin Grist’s winning senior barren mare and reserve female champion Riverbank Rose Queen (Wernllain Sentinel x Riverbank Rosina) rose to the occasion and took the overall reserve ahead of male champion, Peter and Jaquie Denning’s Powysvalley Macsen, shown by Gareth Lapping.

The junior stallion class saw two production teams go head-to-head in final bids for a third win. In the end, it was Simon Pring and Jodie Helliwell who secured the victory with their own Bryneglur Prince Rambo, sired by the winner of the section D sire ratings, Geler Sparc. Meanwhile, Tom Fuller narrowly missed out on the hattrick with Simon Charman’s Swrchyrhafod Cymro Coch.

Jodie had already stood champion youngstock with north-Wales based breeder Mark Roberts’ homebred yearling filly Tirgwyn Tiana (Gwenllan Samson x Geler Magi) and partner Simon had stood top with the filly’s five-year-old full sister, Tir Gwyn Monika Mai, in the junior barren mare class. A tremendous achievement for a stud established just a decade ago!

The Charman-Fuller team had secured their reds in the two-year-old and threeyear-old filly classes with Simon Charman’s homebred Coppathorne Killer Queen (Geler Ryan x Coppathorne Sweet Rosalie)

and Geler Elsi (Geler Sparc x Geler Efa) respectively, with the latter standing reserve youngstock champion. In a ‘pinch-me’ moment for the family, Tom’s middle son Tommy, 14, did bring home a third win for the family when he won the section C junior barren mare class with his grandad Nelson Fuller’s Mattsfield Lady May. It was a moment for all three generations to treasure, being Nelson’s first ever win and Tommy’s debut showing at the Royal Welsh. Tom explained that it was an “unbelievable day” for the family, whilst Nelson said it was one of his “proudest moments”, adding, “he has done the mare himself and it made it all the more special”.

Sterling Cache for Top Dollar!

Richard Telford emerged from Monday’s 36-degree searing heat as something of a hero in the eyes of spectators and competitors alike. Having already judged the ROR classes, the Scottish producer gallantly sifted through the throngs of ridden Welsh cobs, smiling and greeting each ride with enthusiasm. “I’m having such fun,” he told competitors as he made his way down the first line-up.

“You’d better check that,” was his eventual champion’s initial reaction as she was pulled forwards to win the mare class.

This was Alex Williams on the family’s homebred Ringside Top Dollar [Topsy], sired by Llanarth Prince of Wales and out of Glanvyrnwy Rosalie. Though initially pulled fifth in her class, the nine-yearold visibly grew in confidence and found an extra dollop of presence through the championship before giving a scorching gallop up the grandstand to secure the tricolour. It was a magical moment for Gareth and Christine Williams who had already been thrilled to see youngest daughter Kate win the gelding class on Ringside Zorba (Trevallion Troy x Gwernfythan Melody). Zorba certainly found his form at Builth, as he went on to win his first HOYS section D qualifier on the Thursday, and the family enjoyed a bonus win when yearling section B filly Byley Eliza won her class in the palomino section.

The pair then went on to take the overall section championship ahead of the second placed section B, which was Jo Filmer’s superversatile stallion, Longhalves Renoir (Lemonshill Falcon x Rhoson Silwli) with his producer, Samantha Roberts.

Rhandolf for Reserve!

The reserve supreme in-hand card was awarded to Swansea based Lara Joslin and her mother Anna Stevens’ Rhandolf of Catchpool. The six-year-old is sired by the highly successful RIHS winning Brinleyview Comanchee out of Ulverscroft Northern Sky. He won the Shetland stallion class and overall breed championship before returning for the supreme.

Lara’s son, Harry, has qualified Rhandolph’s brother, Toby for HOYS in the lead rein class, and demonstrated Rhandolph’s excellent temperament by hopping on board and riding him back to the stables after the supreme.

It is believed that this is just the second time that a Shetland has ever held the reserve title at the Royal Welsh, the first time being in 1995 when the Crafton stud’s stallion, Ross of Colden Water was shown by Toby Jackson, aged just thirteen.

Rhandolf was shown by Daniel Tarpey whilst Lara concentrates on nurturing her young sons’ showing ambitions. Lara explained that she and Anna felt he was too good to “be sat in the field,” so after a brief chat, Daniel picked him up. The pair have had a fruitful few weeks, standing supreme mountain and moorland in-hadn at Kent County and Silver Medal champion at NPS Area 7. Lara and Anna were thrilled for Daniel. “No one deserves it more than Daniel after a freak accident last year resulted in him being laid up in hospital and missing out on HOYS,” said Lara.

“He is very lucky to be back in the ring so quickly and with such incredible results”.

Ceredigion-based Eiry Bonner landed a double celebration on the show’s final day. Her Connemara stallion, Fear An Ti [Patrick] romped home to take the 143cm mountain and moorland working hunter pony class before also claiming the championship. Eiry and Patrick, who is available via AI, are former HOYS contenders and recently won their first BE90 event. The fin didn’t stop there as she later rode Moelview Moonstruck [Moonie] to win the HOYS section Bs and champion small breeds. The flashy stallion is loaned to Eiry from his breeders, Jane and Richard Jones. Although this is his first season with Eiry, he is no stranger to the limelight, as he has already visited HOYS both under saddle ridden by Chloe Chubb and in the Cuddy Supreme in-hand final shown by Richard.

VINTAGE TREASURE Whenever one chats to an equestrian person, a question that is sure to crop up is: “What is your background?” It’s followed swiftly by: “Were your family horsey?” This was a question that I recently asked Jackie Webb when I spoke to her to collect information for this article.

Jackie, an only child, was born into a seemingly non-horsey background, although as time elapsed, it would transpire that in fact, Jackie’s great, great grandfather was a successful racehorse trainer. Passed down through each generation, she inherited from him a silver inkwell set in a horse’s hoof and some faded racing colours.

Jackie’s father was in the army and was posted overseas for much of her childhood.

Local to where she lived there were some stables and Jackie decided that she would like to learn to ride. Her mother decreed that permission would need to be sought from her father, so a letter was written and sent.

An excited Jackie couldn’t wait to open the reply and was thrilled to find that permission had been granted. As well as the lessons,

Jackie spent every waking moment at the yard, working, helping and gleaning as much information as she could. The daughter of the yard owner competed successfully in show jumping classes and as she outgrew the ponies, Jackie was invited to take on the rides and compete them in her place. It was like a dream come true and very fortunate for pony-mad Jackie!

Jackie met and married Des, who wasn’t at all horsey. He had ridden but the experience hadn’t gone down well. However, under Jackie’s tutorage he learnt very quickly how to assist her in her endeavours. Living in Buckinghamshire and renting a field in Burnham Beeches, Jackie’s equestrian enterprise was to progress and develop. She had a very successful New Forest pony called Hightown Diamond that she show jumped.

In 1974 life was made easier when the family were able to build a new house on seven acres of land they had bought in Berkshire and the Blackthorn Stud was born. Jackie bred a selection of coloureds, palominos, Thoroughbreds and hunters. It gave great

pleasure to have some home breds in training and the mare Miss Blackthorn flying the flag for the stud in the winners’ enclosure.

In the late 1970’s Jackie attended a show with a friend to spectate and ended up watching the supreme championship.

Her attention was drawn by the Exmoor pony and when they came out of the ring, the owner was interrogated and questioned at length. She told Jackie that she should visit the upcoming breed show where she would get the opportunity to see “lots” of Exmoor ponies. The seed was sown and Jackie arranged a family holiday in the south west of England that would incorporate the Exmoor Breed Show. Des, Jackie and the boys enjoyed the break and the equine family swelled with the purchase of a mare and foal. The Blackthorn Stud of Exmoor ponies was created.

By 1990 the stud had moved to a farm in Wick near Bath in Somerset and on a visit to the West Midlands Stallion Show, Jackie was to spot a yearling colt that was tied to the trailer, behaving in a rather unruly manner. With a little investigation she found out that he was called Siskin and had been bred by a Mr and Mrs D. Thomas. The following year she came across him again in her capacity as an inspector for the Exmoor Pony Society. He had been brought forward for inspection to gain a stallion licence.

Jackie couldn’t resist him, and he was duly purchased and joined the Blackthorn Stud.

There was no doubting Siskin’s beauty, his bone and superb conformation, but with that came presence and character that was to elevate him to the forefront of the mountain and moorland classes during his showing career. Siskin dominated Exmoor breed classes and during his in hand career, he won championships throughout the country including supreme at the breed show at Exford as well as taking the Pony of the Year Championship.

year he outwalked all opposition to win the championship, the judge declaring never to have favoured an Exmoor before.

The walk had won the day. He qualified for The Templeton In-Hand Supreme at HOYS (since renamed the Cuddy and now the Price Family) three times: 1996, 1997 and 2000. Ann showed him to gain his 2000 victory at Ponies UK South against tremendous opposition but just a few days prior to the show, the story could have been very different. The Fire Brigade were involved in a dramatic rescue when Siskin, who had pushed through the electric fence, had slipped into one of the deep drainage ditches.

With everyone working desperately hard to keep his head above water, he was lifted out to safety and once on dry land, he made a remarkable and swift recovery enabling him to attend the show at Newbury.

Jackie had always liked her home bred stock to perform and not just be in hand ponies.

Siskin was lightly backed as a youngster but he proved to be a little tricky and so it was decided to postpone his ridden career.

Mathew Lawrence was chosen to undertake the ridden side of his showing career and after a few interesting attempts, he decided that the solution was to just jump on-board and weather the storm. Mathew rode him in the ring initially and once Siskin settled, he took to the role with gusto. Alexandra (Po) Fowler was the lucky rider that was to take Siskin forward with his ridden career as it was felt that the picture would be more pleasing to the eye. When Po got on, he needed leading round for a few minutes, then he was fine.

Siskin still has the distinction of being the only mountain and moorland pony to have qualified for three different HOYS disciplines in the same year. Ridden by Po Fowler, he competed in the open ridden and working hunter pony in 2000 as well as in the Breeder’s Challenge where he finished second in the pony section. He was Best of

Breed at Olympia and had a perfect score in the workers at HOYS, even though he unfortunately tipped a pole off the last fence.

Not only was Siskin an outstanding champion in every discipline he undertook, but he was also an amazing sire of prizewinning stock.

Among the list of memorable progeny are Stowbrook Jenny Wren, RIHS and HOYS winner and Olympia Champion in 2003; Blackthorn Sea Poacher, a big winner in hand, on the flat and in the worker classes, including being Exmoor Sire of the Year at HOYS for many years. The list continues with many more progeny being successful in hand and under saddle for Jackie and other Exmoor breeders. His last foal, Blackthorn Blush Rose, born in 2005, had limited outings as a youngster but did win Devon County as a two-year-old but then was victorious at HOYS twice as well as being Best of Breed at Olympia.

Siskin was found dead in his field in 2007 with his companion Blackthorn Posy (dam of Blush Rose) who sadly didn’t get back in foal to him. He was an exceptional pony and it will probably be a long time before another of the Exmoor breed will match his success; he was definitely a “one off”.

Jackie has remained a firm stalwart of the Exmoor breed devoting 30 years of service to the council and judging panel of the Exmoor Pony Society. Another of the native pony breeds, the Connemara, has joined the stud and with her passion they have flourished and achieved resounding success. It would be an extremely difficult task to identify her “Pony of a Lifetime” but I’m sure Siskin would be there or thereabouts!

The 2022 National Pony Society Championships kept competitors busy and provided ample entertainment for spectators. Ridden and in-hand classes were well supported, with NPS finals, HOYS qualifications and in-hand classes all attracting quality exhibits forwards.

The Williams family’s homebred Welsh section D, Ringside Top Dollar looked fresh from her recent Royal Welsh ridden championship to claim the Ringside Mountain and Moorland Ridden Final championship under Alex Williams. They pipped the reserve, winning Connemara, Janine Sehene’s ultra-consistent and multigarlanded Tyan M’Lady and Sue Deakin, to the post.

Anna Stevens and Lara Joslin fielded a strong team in the fancy dress. Lara’s sons Harry and Oliver rode Toby of Catchpool and Timmy of Catchpool respectively. However, it was Harry and Toby that won the day with a superb Harry Potter inspired effort!

Gillian Simpson’s Dales gelding Griseburn Lester and Aimee Devane topped the Shearwater Ridden Championship over Jo Filmer’s homebred Welsh section B, Longhalves Renoir, who also stood reserve in the Assendon’s Freestyle To Music final.

Meanwhile Aimee also took the Picton Novice final riding Joanna Minns’ Fell stallion, Nicholwalls Graceson.

Six-year-olds dominated the Dargavel 4-6 Year Old Final championship. Taking the championship was Amber Thorpe with her own Highland stallion Marksman of Mendick, with Ashley Connor’s second placed Synod Pompous ridden by Natasha Connor in reserve.

The four-year-old final was won by Tim Hall’s Welsh section C Ballagh En Vogue ridden by April Abbott-Hall and the five-year-old final was claimed by Connemara gelding Cashelbay Toby under his owner, Lucy Thirlby.

Elizabeth Etchells and Mary Rose Bryant’s versatile Exmoor pony Warrenmere Woodcock demonstrated yet another string to his bow, dancing his way to win the Assendons Freestyle To Music and securing himself the most fabulous sash! The pair later secured the HOYS Exmoor class.

Samantha Walker’s daughters Lilly and Evie both claimed a HOYS ticket. Lilly took the junior small breeds class on Welsh section B Melau Aramis, whilst little sister Evie won the mountain and moorland first ridden riding Feldon’s Red Kite. However the mini mountain and moorland championship was won by the lead rein, Sammi Hill’s Thistledown Hawaii Five O under Emily Hill and led by Sharn Linney, with Debbie Barr’s second placed Coppinshill Celebrity in reserve ridden by Grace Cromley.

The junior ridden and inhand classes proved, as ever, to be extremely popular and their inclusion in the evening performance made for a spectacle. Milly Philipson stood second in the junior novice rider small breeds class with Anne Rigby’s Dykes Blue Moon, before going one better in the open small breeds. They were narrowly beaten by Jordan Marshall riding Harry Marshall’s Treworgan Dauntless in the novice rider class. The large breeds classes were won by Meg Dilcock Thomas and Scarlett Marshall. Meg won the large breeds junior novice rider class with her mother, Rachael’s New Forest gelding Simones Firecracker, and Scarlett rode Lorraine Thomas’ Menai the Vicar.

The Carrock stud’s team had a ‘pinch-me’ championships. Their Carrock Bonnie Lass took the breed in-hand championship and Carrock Harry stood reserve supreme foal of the show. The icing on the cake came when Kate Wilson rode Carrock Beauty to head the HOYS Dales class, booking their first ticket together.

Vicky Casey and her former RIHS champion Frederiksminde Volcano not only topped the NPS mountain and moorland open working hunter pony final and stood champion, but also booked a return ticket to HOYS. Stephen Craddock’s mountain and moorland working hunter pony classes were tough. Like Vicki, Ross Keys and exceeding 143cm Dycott Welsh King demonstrated the value of experience to secure a return ticket. Liam Priestley and Stennerskeugh Garry stormed round to take the 133cm class, while the remaining classes, the 122cm and the junior class were won by Jorgi Craigie and Rhencullen Rockette and Libby James riding Glebedale Sugar Babe respectively.

A beaming Ruby Chalker rode her mum, Lucy Chalker’s Exmoor mare, Anchor Lullaby to the NPS intermediate mountain and moorland working hunter pony championship.

Despite being together for just a few months, the pair looked to have formed a great partnership already.

The final day’s HOYS mountain and moorland classes saw excellent numbers forwards. Viv Ruddick’s Highland Trailtrow Gabhan took the Picton novice breed final before stepping up to take the breed HOYS class under Chris Grant, and was just one of several ponies taking a first-time ticket. Others included the eventual champion and reserve, being Suzanne White’s Connemara ticket-holder, Teach Mor Pierce ridden by a delighted Megan White and Tamsyn Bell-Heather riding Paul Steeples’ Greeholme Kate respectively. There were also super sashes for the highest placed mare, being Kate, and the highest placed gelding. This was the Simons family’s homebred Marbeth Jimmy Wilde ridden by Maggie Simons, also a firsttime qualifier.

Chantelle Dorton’s 10-year-old New Forest Farriers Firefly won his second consecutive HOYS class having qualified at the New Forest show before repeating the feat at the NPS championships.

Continuing to dominate the first ridden ranks, Thistledown San Siro [Rocky] and his young rider, William Leeming won the NPS open first ridden championship.

Owned by William’s mum, Diana, Rocky, William and sister Lucinda are having a superb year, with Lucinda and William winning a class each at the RIHS and having three HOYS tickets between them. William and second placed George Levett and Rowfantina Trademark also took the overall open mini mountain and moorland title ahead of the winning lead rein, Lucy Richardson’s uber-successful Thistledown Van der Vaart ridden by Penny Richardson.

Battle For Supreme As ever, the Price Family Supreme qualifier at the NPS was one of the strongest of the year.

Held under lights, it was a spectacle to behold, and native fans were not disappointed!

Taking the championship was David Jordan and his own Moortown Crusader after the Dartmoor stallion started his campaign as breed champion. The 14-year-old stallion is a previous HOYS in-hand finalist and narrowly missed out on his ticket this season when he stood reserve supreme at Royal Cornwall. This will be his third visit to the final at the NEC. “We’re absolutely over the moon qualifying at Malvern - that is the place to do it as it has so many top ponies,” said David. This season he’s had seven

consecutive breed championships and has since taken the supreme title at the Dartmoor Breed Show.

Just weeks after his RIHS supreme mountain and moorland ridden title, Sandra Burton’s Connemara stallion Aniar Cashel left his saddle behind to secure the Connemara breed championship. Similarly, Anna Stevens’ homebred reserve supreme at the Royal Welsh Show Rhandolf of Catchpool stood Shetland champion handled by Daniel Tarpey.

Report by Beth Simons Photos by Equinational Cashel Rocks Judges Helen Horsfall and Valerie Hodgett had their work cut out presiding over a massive open mountain and moorland section. They found their eventual champion in the Connemara and New Forest class won by Connemara stalwart Sandra Burton riding Connemara stallion, Aniar Cashel. The nine-year-old is out of Gowlane Star, and by HOYS finalist and Olympia Best of Breed, Banks Timber, whom Sandra won the RIHS championship with in 2017.

The reserve went Katy Marriott-Payne riding last year’s Heritage supreme champion, Salcombe Starehole Bay [Cecil], owned and bred by Felicity Thompson. The Shilstone Rocks Snowy Mountain stallion has had a phenomenal career despite only being broken in during

the 2020 lockdown. Last season, the pair enjoyed a magical season, standing reserve and Dartmoor Best of Breed at the London International Horse Show, and second at HOYS. They were also supreme mountain and moorland at the RIHS. “We deliberated whether to bring him back, but he’s young” said a thrilled Felicity of her typey eight-year-old,” adding, “you can’t be afraid to lose as it’s no fun that way.”

Lynn Scott’s home-bred former HOYS section C of the year, and the reigning London International Horse Show champion Lynuck The Showman [Peanut] add another title to his tally under usual show rider, Rebecca Penny, who also won on Julie Barton’s former Price Family supreme in hand champion, Highland stallion Ellister Islay Spruce. However, due

to a timetabling clash, Rebecca was unable to compete in the championship, which saw Caitlin Fairhurst catch a last-minute ride on Peanut and Tayla Lewis take Spruce’s reins.

The final class, the Welsh sections A and B was won by Diana Leeming’s Thistledown San Siro [Rocky] ridden by Lucinda Leeming. Interestingly, Rocky’s showing career started with Samantha Roberts, who stood second on Jo Filmer’s Longhalves Renoir. Rocky is HOYS bound this season in three classes, the open section A and junior small breeds with Lucinda, and the first ridden with younger brother, William in the saddle. Not to be left out of the fun at Hickstead, William and Rocky won the heritage first ridden class.

Ab Fab Result for Molly!

The heritage mini championship saw the lead reins come to the fore. After a mammoth afternoon, mini judges Tweetie Nimmo and Ann Bigley chose Exmoor Badleybridge Ab Fab [Molly] as their champion, led by producer Christina Gillet and ridden by Jennifer Frost. Molly is loaned by Clare Frost for daughter, Jennifer, and is owned and bred by Sandy Wooderson and her daughter Madeline Haynes. In fact, she is the first Exmoor the pair have bred. Molly has an excellent track record, being a former HOYS contender, and she was actually third in the same class at the RIHS last year. It was an emotional win for the whole team, including Christina, who was visibly moved. “She’s got so much character, and has her own mind,” said Christina, fondly, adding, “she’s a really lovely pony and a genuine kids pony”.

In Disguise Although not shown as a native, Emma Edwards’ Welsh section B Gryngallt Page Too [Billy] once again proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with, topping the 122cm show hunter pony ranks under Emma’s son, Harry Edwards Brady. It was a magical win for Emma, Harry and Billy as Harry will be out of class at the end of the season, and despite Billy’s innumerable successes including supreme at Royal Welsh, champion at Windsor and a win at HOYS, he had never won at the RIHS. Harry’s joy riding Billy in the main arena was evident to all who witnessed his broad grin and the way the pair threw caution to the wind to give a superb gallop spoke volumes about their partnership!

The reserve went to the second placed lead rein, Heather Clay’s Springwater Tactician ridden by Finlay Clay and led by Craig Eleanor. The Hisley Diplomat six-year-old originally arrived with Craig and partner Sara Parrott to be shown in hand as a three-yearold on behalf of his breeder Nicola Tyler.

However, he was purchased by Heather for her daughter Sienna after HOYS last year.

As Sienna’s just three years old, big brother Finlay has taken the ride until she is ready.

Jessica Norris and the six-year-old New Forest mare Purewell Poppy Lou, owned by Lindsay Miller, finished runners up to Emily and Guardsman in the Pretty Polly final, but had their fairytale moment earlier in the week when they headed the 29-strong UKPH amateur mountain and moorland final. “I can’t believe this has happened. If you had told me I was going to leave RIHS with a win and a second place I would have laughed! It has been a whirlwind of a week,” reflected Jessica, who started working for her mother-in-law Lindsay when she was 16. “She took me under her wing and I have ridden her ponies ever since,” said Jessica, who juggles being a new mum with working and riding.

Riverdance Rules The senior showing championship saw a clutch of wonderful veteran horses and ponies come forwards for judging.

In reserve for the ridden title was the Bowles family’s Welsh section B gelding, Cottrell Riverdance. The 25-year-old was ridden by Millie Bowles. He’s been a prolific winner in his twilight years, with highlights including standing champion in hand veteran in the SEIB Search for a Star at Your Horse Live, overall supreme champion at the Veteran Horse Society Championships twice, where he has also been in the ridden supreme championship every year he’s competed there since 2018.

“He doesn’t let his diabetes stop him” The well-supported UKPH M&M young rider classes saw the smallest pairing of Daisy May Allen and Crumpwell Harry Potter land the championship over the large winner Oliver Bradshaw and Lochlands Lord Byron. Daisy, 13, is now in her second season with the Welsh section A gelding and booked their return ticket to HOYS in the junior class at Stoneleigh. “They both went for it in the championship, she was over the moon to win at RIHS for the first time,” said Daisy’s dad Gavin.

Oliver Bradshaw, 18, posted a win in the junior large breeds final aboard the striking Highland Lochlands Lord Byron (Norman) and clinched the reserve championship, despite coming down with tonsillitis on the morning of his class. “Oliver is a Type 1

Amanda Wilding, who owns and leads Percy and Alyssia, only started doing qualifiers at the end of last season and this was their first visit to RIHS. “We felt he was good enough to pursue the qualifiers this year and it was what we really wanted to do. Never in a million years did we think we would win, it has just been the best week ever,” said Amanda, who led the pair to victory in their HOYS qualifier at Great Yorkshire to secure their first ever ticket to Birmingham.

Having only been purchased three weeks before RIHS, sixyear-old Stanley Disley rode Treworgan Cloudbreak into the runner up spot in the lead rein final. “It was Stanley’s first

time at RIHS and as we haven’t had Cloudy long it was a dream come true to stand second. I am really excited for their future together,” said mum Molly-Jo Disley.

Having recently stood supreme ridden breed champion at the Northern Dartmoor breed show, Molly Millard and the 14-yearold gelding Pumphill Pantheon secured their first win at Hickstead. “He was gifted to my eldest daughter Ella eight years ago by her godmother Sarah Weston and is a true first ridden pony that really looks after his jockey,” said Molly’s mum Carla Iddon. Cayberry Pimpernell is no stranger to finishing second here, having taken the runner up spot in 2018 in the open lead rein final with Mollie Doherty’s brother Kian riding. Mollie then took over the ride on the lead rein and this is their first season in the first ridden classes. Ever the bridesmaid, the pair pulled off a lovely performance in the championship to stand reserve.

Well-Filled Classes On Sunday the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland HOYS qualifiers were as popular as ever.

To assist competitors who wished to get home, two championships were held the Welsh sections D and C, Connemara and New Forest champion was Jane Smith’s winner of the Welsh section C class, Dafren Rhodri. The tricolour for the best Dales, Fells and Highlands went to Nipna Might Oak ridden by Leah May. Jane Chadwick’s Loughmore Charly ridden by Mathew Proctor took the Junior mountain and moorland championship.

The mini mountain and moorland championship went to Brogan West’s Shilstone Rocks Thunder Bird ridden by Willow West. Judge Clive Johnston, Irish Pony Society Chairman said, “The champion and reserve ponies were lovely examples of their breeds with wonderful manners looking after their young riders.”

It was brilliant on both days to see such a big turnout for the supreme championships with 17 horses forward on the Saturday and Sunday with three Supreme Championships on offer: Amateur Supreme, TSR Members Supreme and an Overall Supreme. The members supremes were both clinched by natives. Jenny Wellens leading her own Miniature Shetland, Blackstonefolly Benjamin, landed the Saturday TSR Members Supreme while the Sunday TSR Members and Overall accolades went to Lilly Richardson, who stole the show with her charming Shetland, Briar Snow Fox.

A DELVE INTO DARTMOOR

Roan heritage Dartmoor pony with brand to show she is approved to join the supplementary register for Dartmoor ponies

Words and photographs by Ruth Chamberlain I arrived in Dartmoor and immediately felt like I had been plunged into the Wild West. It was wonderful to see Dartmoor ponies in large groups from the start. Haytor Rocks loomed impressively as I drove further in, quite the contrast from Exmoor! My friend Cathryn was still with me, and we met Dru Butterfield of the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) upon arrival who immediately took us to find some Dartmoor ponies.

The sun was just setting when we got to the location, and the Sherlock Holmes fan in me was squealing with excitement – we were at Hound Tor! There were a group of beautiful grey Dartmoor ponies there and I quickly got my camera out and began snapping. It was such a perfect setting with the light and the Tor. Our first night even gave us an ominous howling when we arrived. We were truly in Dartmoor.

The best day, Dru took us to Bellever Tor, where the DPHT are conducting ongoing scientific research into how ponies positively impact the environment, and in particular, how they are restoring the heath at this site. The walk we did with her was fascinating, and it was easy to see how the ponies are restoring biodiversity across the whole site and the huge range of habitats is quite simply a haven for wildlife. I cannot squeeze into this feature the amount of knowledge nor can I truly reflect the passion Dru has. In my opinion, it it perhaps the most significant site for providing scientific support that proves ponies’ key role in conservation grazing.

The ponies on the site were gorgeous – a mixture of registered Dartmoor ponies and some heritage Dartmoor ponies. Dartmoor ponies (SRD). When SRD mares are bred to a registered stallion, the offspring goes into the SRD1 and this offspring bred to a registered stallion will produce SRD2 ponies. Offspring from an SRD2 mare bred to a registered stallion can join the main register, so it is a great way of bringing in Dartmoor pony genes that would otherwise be lost. It was lovely to see roan and grey Dartmoors too, something I haven’t seen much of! The DPHT offer free guided walks, and I highly recommend booking one. You can find more information under the “education” tab on their website (www.dpht. co.uk).

Cathryn and I spent the rest of the day looking for more Dartmoor ponies. We came across a number of lovely Dartmoor hill ponies.

These are ponies that descend from the same ancestral ponies as the Dartmoor pony breed, but their genes were influenced by other breeds such as Shetland and Welsh ponies that found their way to Dartmoor for use in industries such as mining. These bred with the local ponies and have resulted in a very hardy pony indeed. It was wonderful to find both ponies out on the hill and we enjoyed a lovely evening walk with one of Cathryn’s friends who showed us the routes they take during the annual pony drifts.

Cathryn and I parted ways the following morning, and I travelled to meet the very talented Malcolm Snelgrove. He is a gifted photographer who has unrivalled photos of ponies on Dartmoor, and does so much to raise awareness for them all. I was very excited to meet him, and he took me to a lovely location where we watched some mares and foals. It was drizzling, but I was quite glad of it as I had not experienced any rain since I left Cumbria (us Cumbrians tend to lose functions if we dry out too much). Chatting with Malcolm about his years walking across Dartmoor was wonderful, and I really recommend you look him up to see his photographs.

Malcolm and I said, “goodbye,” but he did direct me to another place where I would find more Dartmoor Hill ponies. I had a super leg stretch and caught up with the lovely family of them before packing up my things to head across to the New Forest.

JJ Takes A Star Turn

Any follower of working hunter ponies will need no introduction to Cashelbay JJ. The Connemara gelding has been nothing short of prolific with wins in the plaited and native worker ranks at the highest level. He has been champion at RIHS and even won his plaited and native working hunter pony at HOYS in the same year, going on to stand champion in the native section. This year, he is leased by the Eddis family to Maisie Kivlochlan, who is having a superb time with him. They made Maisie’s second ever event, the BE90 at Solihull, a winning won after standing sixth at Aston le Walls. Maisie explained: “Having qualified for HOYS early, we wanted to keep his season varied and he’s just such a legend he absolutely loves it and gives me so much confidence.

I literally couldn’t ask for anymore from him, he just keeps on giving.”

Epic Leaps Alexandra Cluer and her Welsh section D, Desach Epic – otherwise known as Edward – clearly had a blast having a first ever go at cross country during the Somerford Park Camp.

Lillie Kershaw Lillie Kershaw,14, – 13 when photographed here – and Ebbwshaw Ebrill recently competed in the ARAHT (Army Royal Artillery hunter trials). As Lillie is Army Cadet Force, she competed in the military class with her 12-year-old homebred and home-produced Welsh section D mare. “This was a big class of regular army personnel competing either their own horses or Military Working Horses, and Lillie ended up with a smashing clear round and taking away third place, despite being the youngest in the class to compete,” said mum, Becks Kershaw. Lillie has been riding since was little and currently rides four of the family’s own as well as some for others. She is currently working particularly hard on her own Welsh section D homebred Mini. “Lillie is bringing her on as her own project and to see where they both go together,” explained Becks.

The Driving Detectives A few months ago, we featured Netherlands-based Jaqueline Berg and her Dartmoor duo, Peekhills Sherlock and Morse.

“The Detectives” were exported by Jaqueline as prospective driving ponies and in her words, they “have taken to driving like a duck to water”. She gave us an update on their progress together…

“Only one year ago, when they had just been paired up together, we took them to their first show. Not to actually compete in the show, but only to show them around the event.

The last couple of months we have been going to shows more regularly, attending both small and bigger events. Peekhills Sherlock and Morse have outdone themselves every time. They even won their first orange rosette, which in the Netherlands, is the colour of first place. We compete in either dressage, cones or marathon, or a combination of these disciplines. We’ve been trying to show them as many different environments as possible.

We are so proud of their progress and their seemingly endless

talent. They must trust us a lot, for they’ve never questioned what we asked of them, and they always seem very happy during and after the shows.

This autumn we have two more marathons lined up for them and we’ll be taking them to the forest more often (when there’s no more bugs) to build their muscle strength and stamina.

We also will be concentrating on dressage, which is the most important but difficult discipline to master.

If you have already read about us before, you will know that we are new Dartmoor pony owners. We are finding that everyday is a joy and a privilege working with these incredible sweet and smart animals!

We look forward to the cooler winter weather, which is much better for driving, and we are very optimistic for next year’s showing season. If all keeps going this well and we all stay happy and healthy, many great things could be ahead for this extraordinary pair.

16-year-old Highland pony Mhairi of Silverstripe and her human, Marsha Holtham, swapped the showring for something a little different and had “an absolute blast” competing in their first ever Forest Cross, organised by the The National Forest Riding Club, Ticknall, Derbyshire! The competition entailed a full course of showjumps dotted around the forest to be completed in as close to optimal BE 80 time. “Amazingly, we came third and can’t wait to do it again,” said Marsha.

Target Practice for Tara Sophie Richardson and her 20-year-old standard Shetland pony Hedderwick Tara, competing for a sixth year in Pony Club mounted games area competitions, tried something new: horseback archery with Emily Massey BHAA Coach. A versatile pair, they also enjoy showing. “We took a break from showing due to covid but had first outing last week and got our VHS regional qualification card,” explained Sophie’s mum, Jane.

No Dressage Diva Moments With Lady!

Nina Aldred’s five-year-old Welsh section B stallion Moelview Casino Royale has taken off to new heights!

By HOYS finalist Moelview Chieftain, he has recently turned a hoof to eventing. He is photographed competing at his first event, Somerford Park Cheshire Shield.

“You would never have known it was his first event he flew round and thoroughly enjoyed himself,” said Nina.

Polly Vogel acquired eight-year-old 153cm Connemara mare Loughamore Lady in January 2022. Polly explained: “Lady had been competing with her previous owner and it was fantastic to take over the ride. We’ve worked hard on schooling and started competing at British Dressage alongside private lessons and Riding Club sessions. My partner, Martin, also started jumping her and attending clinics. We were selected as individuals for Devon for British Dressage Inter County Championships and after a good first day, we’re out in the team at Prelim and came individual sixth. Recently, we attended our first BD Regional Championships. I was really nervous but Lady was fantastic and took it all in her stride. Having previously competed a TB and then a Warmblood, having a horse that did not spook at all the flowers and who coped with the atmosphere was amazing and helped my confidence. To top it off, we were in the ring at the same time as Charlotte DuJardin was riding in the novice class which she went on to win! Lady held her own in my opinion and I was proud to be riding a native in amongst all the impressive Warmbloods!

After a tricky few years with confidence struggles, having a native has been the best thing for me and I can’t wait to keep training her and progressing as a partnership.”

The British Connemara Pony Society Breed Show Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell 16 and 17 July Report by Julia Spacey The BCPS Breed show was a very successful and well supported two days.

Due to the extreme heat and hard ground conditions, a last-minute decision was made to move the in hand and ridden flat classes to the Aboretum Field which had much better green grass cover and areas of shade which provided a lovely backdrop to the show. There was plenty of space for the dressage arenas and two large rings.

The first day was dedicated to the In Hand and Dressage classes. The youngstock in hand entries, judged

by Mrs Jane Somerset, were greatly increased on previous years which was most encouraging. The youngstock champion was Steven Thompson’s homebred three-year-old colt, Fenrose Misty Fionn, and in reserve was Jackie Parry’s Irish bred filly Castle Empress, who went on to win the Tam O’Shanter In Hand Championship, held in memory of the late Carole Prentice.

Dressage Champion

Mr Jerome Harforth judged the mare and stallion classes. Sadly, there were no progeny groups present. He chose Georgia Couchman’s Irish mare Pooreen Melody, winner of the class for mares four years old and over with or without foal at foot, as his champion, and the best British bred mare, Tyan Helen of Troy, shown by Amy Smith, winner of the novice mare class as reserve. The champion stallion and overall breeding champion of the show was awarded to Joy Wyman’s striking Irish-bred stallion Hazelrock Cruise with Sam Fowler’s Glencarrig Marble reserve, who went on to win the breeding championship of the show with Pooreen Melody reserve.

Judge Mary Low awarded the Britishbred in hand championship to EmmaJane Murray’s homebred six-year-old mare, Ochill’s Enchanted with Fenrose Misty Fionn reserve.

The second day of the show was dedicated to the ridden and working hunter pony classes. There were presided over by Mrs Helen Horsfall, who chose Lauren Brill’s Silvertown Lady as her very novice champion. This class was followed by the NPS Picton novice qualifier, this time judged by Mr Jerome Harforth, and won by Sue Deakin’s Lucky Keepsake. Sue also won the NPS/Dargavel Open Young Pony qualifier with Glynsk Legend.

The NPS/Robinson Junior Ridden National championship went to Deborah Wilson’s Glenrevagh Heather. The class for ridden ponies not exceeding 143 cms was won by Chilham Pearly King owned and ridden

by Lauren Brill. Another Chilham pony bred by Vanessa Compton, Chilham Night Sky, won the NPS/Peasedown Stud and Jess Talbot mountain and moorland intermediate qualifier and went on to be reserve British-bred ridden supreme champion and reserve supreme ridden champion of the show. The NPS/ Ringside Stud open ridden qualifier was won by the Irish bred stallion Anair Cashel exhbited by Sandra Burton.

The best class of the day, with sixteen ponies forward, was undoubtedly the HOYS qualifier. This all-important class was judged by Mrs Jane Somerset (Conformation) and Mrs Helen Horsfall (Ride). Their overall qualifier was the delightful British-bred 145cms mare Carlingford Enchantment bred by Mrs C. Fletcher, owned by Mrs L. Shafer and ridden by Rebecca Penny. She went on to win ridden champion of the show, best British-bred champion, and finally, the Supreme Ridden Champion of the Show, which was judged by Ms Rafifa Hamoudova, the 2021 recipient of the Pat Parker Legacy who is

currently working on the development of the Czech Republic Association for the Connemara pony.

The WHP classes were all held in the covered outdoor school with a good surface for jumping. These were judged

by Mrs Rachel Bown and Mrs Janet James. Their overall champion was Caroline Bowler’s Dunguaire Finn McCool, repeating his 2021 success, with Sophie Hetherton-Davies’ Culmore Tom as reserve. The best British-bred working hunter pony champion was again Mrs K Simmons’ St Flannans Liam ridden by Julia Woods, with Georgia Lindstrom’s Kinvara Carousel as reserve.

On the evening between the two days, the Society arranged an excellent alfresco supper supplied by caterers Farriers’ Fayre which was much enjoyed by the many people who stayed on site. Overall, the show was deemed a great success, due in no small part to the many people who worked so hard to make it happen and on the day - despite the heat.

The show also provided various unaffiliated classes including sports/ competition pony, overheight and partbred ridden and in hand, veteran, side saddle, pairs, family pony, amateur and veteran rider, show jumping, Chase Me Charlie and Have a Go Fun Trec. There was ample opportunity to show the versatility of our breed.

Overall performance pony champion was the Walters family’s homebred part-bred Holnest Macalla with Janine Modder’s Western Toby reserve. The

Photos by SMB Photographic The appeal of a direct London International Horse Show ticket for the BSPS Heritage Final attracted quality lineups. Narrowly missing out on a ticket was Hannah Atkinson riding her mother Linda Atkinson’s Danwood Llewellyn [Lewi].

The 2018 reserve mountain and moorland pony of the year has had a superb season so far. Linda rode the Wyken Rob Roy gelding to secure his HOYS ticket at the Spring Festival whilst Hannah, the current Young Ambassador for the Welsh Pony and Cob Society was otherwise engaged.

Hannah most recently won a huge HOYS class at the Great Yorkshire show before going on to stand section reserve. Last season, Hannah and Lewi secured the family’s first ever qualification for the London International Horse Show and stood seventh at the final.

However, they were beaten to the tricolour and the ticket by Kirstin McMurray riding third generation homebred Trailtrow Tearlach. The 13-year-old Highland stallion is by former HOYS winner Mosside McLaren and out of Trailtrow Tilliwhillie. Though late to the ridden scene, he’s had a super career under saddle.

He was first shown in novice classes in 2019, finishing the season at Blair Castle

as Supreme Ridden Champion at the Highland Pony Show and on the following day at the NPS Scotland Finals, stood supreme in-hand mountain and moorland champion and supreme mountain and moorland ridden.

In 2021, he moved up to open classes with panache, taking NPS intermediate champion and reserve supreme at NPS Scotland on his seasonal debut and was supreme champion ridden Highland and reserve male in-hand Highland at the Royal Highland Showcase a few days later. He also secured his first ever HOYS ticket on his first attempt at Cheshire County Show.

Full-time radiographer Kirstin explained that he is “totally home produced, mainly ridden by Gillian, who won the HPS Performance Awards in 2019 competing with him in ridden showing and BD dressage”. She went on to explain that she takes over the reins “at the major shows and does some low level working hunter pony classes and arena eventing with him”. Since Lancashire, he’s again gone on to stand both supreme mountain and moorland ridden and supreme mountain and moorland in-hand at NPS Scotland Summer Show.

By Amy Smith As I write, we are at the five-week mark to HOYS and with the last qualifiers coming up at Moreton and Stoneleigh, tension and nerves are at an all-time high! As amazing it is to qualify for HOYS, if you haven’t got a ticket, please remember the good times throughout the season and look at how far you have come; don’t dwell on the fact that you haven’t qualified. It’s getting harder and harder to qualify with rising quality in all classes.

If you have qualified, now the real stress begins! Rugs on, rugs off!! Have I done enough? Have I done too much?? All I know is that whatever the outcome, I will have put my heart and soul into every animal I compete there.

With the kids being off school, we have had the busiest school holidays! Well, it’s been especially busy for Myles; out of the whole six weeks holidays, I think he’s

been at home around seven days! The first week of the holidays started off down at the Royal International Horse Show. I had a lovely relaxing week down there with the kids as I only had my own Pedro and Dalefoot Amber in the working hunter that week. After the course walk with Pedro the double walked extremely long and I should’ve gone with my gut feeling and mentioned it to the course builder if the striding wasn’t correct. This error by myself resulted in the last fence coming down, costing me a clear round and possibly a top two rosette but we all are still learning, and I won’t make that mistake again!

When we got home from the RIHS I worked in the hairdressers for three days then we packed up again and away we went back to Ireland to visit John‘s family for eight days. We packed as much as we could in while we were there including two trips to the most amazing beaches

and a couple of visits down to the famous Clifden Connemara Show.

Since returning, I have hit the ground at full speed with a yard full of ponies returning from a short break and preparation for these last few qualifiers.

This season has tested every emotion I could possibly feel! I’ve cried, laughed, had huge highs and massive lows. I’ve learnt so much more about myself and I’ve learnt to always go with my gut instinct. Sometimes it’s the little things that make you the happiest.

I keep playing with the idea of doing a blog of exercises for people to do at home over the winter, I’d like to know what you think?

Jessica Regan explains why Welsh section B stallion Eyarth Braveheart is her Pony of a Lifetime…

“I can still remember the day we went to Eyarth Stud in north Wales to look at their foals. My mum, Carolyn had picked out a grey and a palomino from the website she really wanted to see. As we rolled down their long drive, Mum pointed at a smart looking foal in the field and said, ‘I bet we end up coming home with a bay thing’.

“Indeed, we did come away having bought that ‘bay thing’!

Although the two foals that Mum had picked out were nice, they just didn’t quite have the WOW factor that this three-week-old foal had. Despite the rain, when Joe Parry trotted his dam up, Braveheart pinged round next to her, full of presence.

“Jessie and Joe very kindly offered for me to come with them to the Royal Welsh that year as they were taking Braveheart and his dam.

At the last minute they asked if I minded stepping into the ring as they had two foals in the same class. There’s nothing like showing a mare with foal at foot for the first time at the Royal Welsh Show!

“After arriving home at five months, Bertie – as he is known at home – began growing like a weed. He was already 13.1hh as a yearling, and at times through his growth spurts, he resembled a mini racehorse rather than a Welsh pony.

“Anyone with a foal by Bertie will tell you that you just have to close your eyes until they are two years old when they start filling out and suddenly look beautiful! Braveheart was no different, and although he did well as a yearling, it was as a two-year-old that he really started to hold his own – including winning his first WPCS Bronze medal.

“We had a lot of fun with Bertie as a two and three-year-old in hand. As a three-year-old, he also covered three mares. We were initially worried he’d drop weight covering as we were also showing him. Luckily, all our fears were for nothing; his laidback attitude meant he enjoyed the extra food and put on a bit too much weight.

“As a four-year-old he was lightly backed by Steph Zebedee based in Verwood. When Steph agreed to back him, she explained that she likes to do a few weeks of groundwork before getting on, however in his first session having done some long reining, she decided to have a sit on him. My mum and I had already done a lot of work with him including playing with trotting poles which he really enjoyed, so Steph was happy he was ready for the next step. In classic Bertie style, he was very easy to back, just a little lazy. Steph did a fantastic job setting him up, and most of their time was spent hacking round the countryside, which he loved.

“After a summer putting his hooves up, Bertie went to Jo Filmer in the autumn to be ridden on and prepared for his five-yearold year. Jo has a dressage background and spent many hours working him long and low and slowly strengthening him up. I learnt a massive amount watching Jo bringing Bertie on and I will be forever grateful to her and Steph for giving Bertie such an amazing foundation to build on.

“At the time Claire Sheehan, was riding for Jo and she piloted Bertie straight in at the deep end with open ridden classes as a five-year-old. The magical moment of our first HOYS qualification happened at Northleach on his third try. Bertie was our first pony to qualify for the final and we were just praying our novice pony would take in the atmosphere and go well.

As always, he exceeded our expectations, giving a polished performance to stand second. I have a fantastic video of him in the evening performance championship resting a leg as they announced the results. Even with all the clapping, cheering and

Really, it’s a good job he’s stayed a stallion, or I think he would be far too laid back for the show ring.

“For the future, he will concentrate on some dressage and potentially even be broken to harness.

I’m sure wherever he goes and whatever he does, he will take it all in his stride as he always does.

“In the meantime, we will continue enjoying following his offspring as they embark on their ridden careers. His first foal, Copella Lanark, will be competing against him in the Welsh section B class at HOYS this year, and a number of others are starting to come through the ranks in both the open section B and junior classes.”

“Over the next four years, Bertie qualified for HOYS under a few different riders, in 2017 with Katy Marriott Payne first time out – and ridden

by Aimee Devane at the final – and in 2018 and 2019 with Lauren Brill. Marina Greenway took over the ride in 2020, but sadly COVID prevented them doing much. Bertie made up for it in 2021 though, qualifying first time out at Derbyshire Festival.

“For 2022 he has been campaigned from home for the first time, ridden by Kate Williams and Hannah Atkinson in HOYS qualifiers, gaining his ticket with Hannah at Denbigh and Flint. We are very lucky that he is straightforward enough that people can get on him at shows and it doesn’t matter in the slightest whether he has had some time off.

“Although HOYS is not Bertie’s favourite show – he thinks a 20-minute hack just to get to the ring and do more work is pony cruelty – he has been placed every year to date. He is never bothered about the atmosphere wherever we take him, though he can get quite jolly in the canter go round – especially in a championship with large breeds where he is determined he has more go than a section D. “In 2019 Bertie made another dream come true, winning his WPCS Gold Medal at the Royal Welsh Show ridden by Kate Williams. In such a strong class, it was a complete surprise and we had a fantastic time celebrating.

“Although Bertie is beautiful and has many fantastic results to his name, the thing that makes him truly special is his temperament. He is incredibly bright, and can train his humans in a matter of days. You can always see exactly what he is thinking, and he knows how to charm people to his way of doing things. He’s a massive fan of sleeping, and enjoys nothing more than a good afternoon nap on a deep straw bed. Leave him out in the rain though, and you’ll be getting a very bad review.

Next Generation at Grassgill This year Team Grassgill decided it would be the year that they would fulfil their leader, boss, admin and Mum’s lifelong ambition to compete at the Great Yorkshire Show. Amy Balmer said, “ever since my Mam, Anne Alderson, was 10 years old, she has wanted to take her own Dales pony to the show, even hire a stable overnight. Her aunty would walk her through the stables to look at every single horse and pony there.” The family have lived and farmed in Wensleydale where they used Dales to work on the farm. So, a true Yorkshire family. To top the day off, Amy’s daughter, Anne’s Granddaughter Charlotte, who is 13, took to the show ring with her Gran’s homebred Dales pony, Bleathgill Clementine [Tiny].

Tiny is four years old, and the pair looked after each other beautifully in the ring. Amy said, “the amount of confidence that pony gave to Charlotte was huge.

The judge was polite and treated her with the same respect as the older more experienced competitors.”

Amy went on to say, “all of Team Grassgill, our family really, had the best time at a show for a very long time. We didn’t get a high placing but felt no pressure and enjoyed being with our ponies. Just as it should be.”

Rose Rises To Top David Eccles and his daughter Emma had yet another super day out at the Great Yorkshire Show. First of all Westwick Daisy was placed third in a very strong class of ponies in the broodmare section and her colt foal came up to take the top spot in the foal class. However it was Westwick Lady Rose who really shone, taking the 18-strong senior mare class. The five-year-old mare was shown by Emma before the pair went on to take the section tricolour, repeating Emma’s success in 2021 when she was champion with Westwick Polly. The judge, Mr Peter Boustead commented: “The pony had tremendous action front and behind.

Lovely flat bone and joints. Not too fat but in good condition.

Very much a pony type. What a Dales pony should be.”

Sun Shines on Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show The sun shone down on Exford for the Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show 2022.

One of the highlights of the Exford Show, the ponies are represented from free-living and in-ground herds.

The show rings were wellfilled beginning a day to remember for Elizabeth Etchells with Mary Rose Bryant’s stallion Warrenmere Woodcock. The pony won the stallion class before being called forward as supreme in hand champion, ahead of Deborah Drummond’s champion youngstock, yearling Tawbitts Squirrel Nutkin.

In the afternoon, ridden ponies took centre stage, with Warrenmere Woodcock also taking the open ridden HOYS qualifier. With the stallion having already qualified at the National

Pony Society Summer Championships a week previous, the ticket was passed to Mystical Master Bee ridden by Rachael Davis. It was a delight to see so many ponies in the junior ridden classes which resulted in a packed championship with Warrenmere Woodcock winning the supreme ridden champion. Dunkery Hornbill, having won the restricted open and style and performance classes, took the reserve supreme ridden champion.

The culmination of the afternoon was the supreme of the show, which capped a fantastic day for Elizabeth with Warrenmere Woodcock taking the title with Dunkery Hornbill and Stephanie Richards coming from the ridden section to take the reserve spot.

The Fell Pony Society Centenary Ball

Compiled by Claire Simpson What a fabulous evening we had at the FPS Centenary Ball, held in Kendal in the middle of August. Vicky Parker and Eileen Walker had done a wonderful job and created an absolutely spectacular setting for the evening’s events. The table settings were beautiful; tables were named after Fell pony studs, and the attention to detail included individual menus for each of the 150 guests with diamante stickers to indicate their menu choices.

Each guest also received a lovely keepsake in the form of a pin badge depicting the Centenary logo together with a chocolate in a beautifully tied gift box.

Kevin Owens from Digital Works Ltd was on hand to capture images of members and their guests, who had all scrubbed up very well and were dressed in their finery; quite a change from how we would normally see each other in showing gear or mucking out clothes!

The evening started with a welcome from Vicky, before guests enjoyed their meal, during which FPS President Christine Morton addressed the guests, and ceremoniously cut the splendid Centenary cake, which had been created by FPS Secretary, Katherine Wilkinson, and her daughter Megan.

Many of those present had completed the Centenary 100 miles challenge and were presented with their beautiful commemorative rosettes by Eileen.

During the evening a screen displayed a series of photos that had been provided by many of the 100 miles entrants from around the world.

After the presentation Centenary Committee Chair Jane Rawden addressed the guests and presented organisers Vicky and Eileen with a bouquet of flowers, Jane’s contribution as Chair of the Centenary Committee was also recognised and she received a beautiful bouquet.

With the formalities over the guests hit the dancefloor and an excellent night was had by all, with many commenting that the Ball should become an annual event.

Thanks to the Centenary Committee, the team at the Castle Green Hotel and particularly to Eileen and Vicky for their organisation, and to Vicky for sticking on all those diamante jewels and creating the gift boxes!

‘Celebrating Fell Ponies’ at The Old Courthouse, Shap

By Claire Simpson The Old Courthouse at Shap staged an art exhibition, and other events throughout August in celebration of the Centenary of the Fell Pony Society. Fifteen different artists displayed their work in a variety of media including felt and glass work.

Also on display was a large reproduction of a scene circa 1920 at Brough Hill Fair, kindly on loan from John Dunning. The picture depicts the horse sale at the height of its importance, before mechanisation had replaced horses and at a time when the army and the coal mines were the principal buyers for the small working horses from the fells.

The exhibition attracted many visitors, some of whom have travelled from the USA and Europe for the Centenary events.

Visitors were particularly impressed by the Fell pony artwork from pupils of Shap Primary School who had been treated to a visit from local Artist Julia Mitchell, and Janet Wood, who took one of her ponies along as a model for the children to sketch. In addition to artwork there were information boards relating to Fell ponies and a display of Packhorse Poetry, with poems written by the Old Courthouse

Writing Group to accompany the images.

The images included a series of souvenir postcards featuring pack horse routes that have been produced as part of the Westmorland Dales ‘A Way Through’ project and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. There was also a space for visitors to sit down and chat or watch Fell Pony related DVDs and see the series of photographs taken by many of those who had taken up the Centenary 100 mile challenge with their Fell ponies.

Local artist, Christine Longmire who had several artworks in the exhibition, spent a couple of afternoons at the exhibition working on a new painting. The Fell pony themed workshops proved popular. Jane Bardgett showed participants how to create an animal portrait in needle felt. Artist, Alex Jakob-Whitworth, who also had artwork on display, held two workshops; ‘Drawing a Fell Pony in Charcoal’ and ‘Tackling the Colourful Darks of a Fell Pony ‘.

The talks that took place were also well supported. Author, Sue Millard, was joined by fellow Fell pony enthusiasts Barbara

Bell, Sarah Charlton and Clive Richardson to chat about ‘The Making of the Centenary Book’. The book is dedicated to the Society’s Patron, HM Queen Elizabeth II, and celebrates both her Platinum Jubilee and the Society’s Centenary. The book uses sequences of vintage and modern photographs of many families of ponies to show how the breed has developed over the past hundred years. Many attended the evening with Peter Boustead, Chairman of the Fell Pony Society, who discussed what he looks for when judging a Fell pony in a presentation that aligned conformation, type, the way of going with the ponies’ natural habitat and purpose.

An appreciative audience gathered for the final event, a Social Evening, where Bill Lloyd , musician and raconteur, compered an evening ‘A Way Through – pony travels through Westmorland told in story, poetry, music and song’ Bill spoke of the vital role that pack horses had played in the economy of the country throughout the Middle Ages and up until the industrial revolution being used to transport items including; wool, salt, slate, graphite and lead ore. On sale day they created a spectacle as up to a hundred ponies were led by Walter on horseback and guided by his outriders down through the main street of the town, causing many holdups with the cars and coaches passing through from the northeast en route to Blackpool Illuminations.

of packhorse routes across Cumbria and some of the pack horse bridges are still intact. He recalled his boyhood home on a hill farm in Rossendale and described how his father, Walter, was always interested in the Fell pony as a working animal. He used a packsaddle and hessian sacks on his pony to carry coal home from a drift mine a mile away. He also used a pony and cart to spread muck and built a sledge (North American Indian pattern) to haul cattle feed and groceries up the hill to the farm in snowy weather. Bill told of the rather eccentric but respected character, Ailse ‘o’ Fussers, who drove a string of up to 20 ponies (galloways) along the ancient highway of Limer’s Gate, carrying coal one way and lime on the return. He brought with him several artefacts that had belonged to his father Walter Lloyd including Ailse’s bell and a replica of one of Ailse’s pack saddles that Walter had made.

Jean Scott-Smith read ‘The Song of the Packhorsemen’. It was written by W.T. Mcintyre for The Westmorland Pageant performed in 1927 by Westmorland Federation of Women’s Institute. She then spoke about the two Corpse Roads, one from Mardale and the other from Hardendale that were used to bring the dead for burial, carried in a coffin strapped to the pony’s back, to Shap church. Sue Millard read her own poem ‘Voices in the Stones’ from her Galloway Gate collection which alluded to a local drovers route that began just south of the village. Sue followed this with a light-hearted song she had written extolling the virtues, and otherwise, of a Fell pony she owned known as ‘Mr T’.

Bill told of his father establishing the Hades Hill Fell pony herd when he bought two mares from Sarge Noble in 1957 and how he had asked for a terrier for ‘luck’. Bill picked up the theme of working ponies with examples of the Hades Hill ponies being used for logging, coppicing and to pull the Whitworth rushcart. Walter and the herd moved to Cumbria in 1985 and Bill’s brother Tom now uses Fells as pack

ponies to trek with visitors on the high fells, such as High Street and the Howgills.

Bill closed the first half with a powerful rendition of his emotive poem ‘Pennine Horseman’.

Vyv Wood-Gee opened the second half with an insight into three of the many rides she has done in the area of Westmorland with her Fell ponies; travelling over Gatescarth Pass into Mardale when she rode the Coast-to-Coast route, riding the Corpse Road from Mardale over into Swindale and on to Shap, and riding a circuit on the Crosby Ravensworth Fell with its limestone outcrops and pavements. Her enthusiasm and excitement for riding Fell ponies and connecting with the history of these old routes was obvious always questioning “what was their purpose? who rode there centuries before? “.

Ray Alderson shared his memories and pictures of Cowper Day horse sale, held in Kirkby Stephen which was at the height of its popularity in the 1960s when he worked for horse dealer and farmer Walter Tuer.

Ray was one of those who on horseback helped to round up the ponies from the surrounding commons ready for the sale.

Two more colourful fixtures of the Westmorland events calendar, Appleby Fair and Brough Hill Fair, were brought to life

by Bill in his final set. He sang a song about the road to the fair and shared memories of his father travelling by horsedrawn caravan pulled by Fell ponies from Rossendale up to Appleby Fair, accompanied by colourful images of Walter on the road. Bill concluded with a song, called ‘Brough Hill Fair’ accompanying himself on the banjo.

by Bill to reflect more recent times. It was very apt that the large reproduction picture of ‘Brough Hill Fair’ by artist Donald Wood and on loan from John Dunning for the exhibition was hanging on the wall behind.

Janet Wood, Trustee at The Old Courthouse, Shap thanked the Old Courthouse volunteers and everyone for their involvement in the evening and the exhibition and acknowledged the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme, grant funded by National Heritage Lottery Fund, for their support. Bill brought the evening to an end by piping the haunting ‘Lament for Billy Alway’.

Beaulieu Road Online Auction Report by Lucinda Lang, Chairman of New Forest Livestock Society The New Forest Livestock Society sadly had to cancel the sale planned for June due to the ongoing sale yard reinstatement work from a fire in April 2021. This sale was replaced by a fourth online auction run in conjunction with Southern Counties Auctioneers and The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society.

The auction was open to all registered New Forest ponies and part-breds registered with the NFPBCS plus other breeds that had been de-pastured on the open forest by commoners. This sale again enabled those sellers from across the country, who were eligible to enter, to take part in this online auction and an opportunity for buyers, who may not be able to make a sale, the ability to be able to bid on any of the lots. An easy-to-read online catalogue was produced by the auctioneers from their website providing guidelines on viewing, collection, and transfer of all paperwork for the lots presented for the auction. The auction ran over two weekends to enable perspective buyers the opportunity to view any interested lots which is highly recommended.

A good entry of 71 lots were put forward with 53 being fully registered New Forest ponies. Entries in the fully registered New Forest section had a mixture of both ‘Forest Bred’ (sired and born on the open New Forest) and stud bred animals from yearlings to older ponies with a good mix of fillies, mares, colts and geldings. Some of the older ponies were already broken to ride. Buyers had a good selection to pick from.

did not disappoint with the highest bid of the online auction going to Robinsbrook Zeberdee by Pigbush Racer out of May-Zee, owned by Leanne Sequenza. A four-yearold bay gelding broken to ride - £6050.

Part-bred animals ranged from £600 to £6050.

Section 4, Equines of Other Breeds saw a small number of entries. Donkeys ranged from £140 to £700. Other Breeds ranged from £540 to £1300.

The demand for the quality New Forest pony has continued with the online auctions proving to be popular. Prices reflected both the quality and demand for the New Forest Pony and what they have to offer.

This breed has an amenable temperament, versatility to multiple disciplines, hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness.

Future sales will be held at the Beaulieu Road Sale Yard: Thursday 22nd September, Thursday 27th October (includes pre-sale foal show) and Thursday 1st December 2022.

Blind 86-year-old cancer survivor veteran proves you can’t let age or disability stand in your way!

by Kate Hampton Brian Beniston first entered the ring in 2019 with his daughters pony, Dryfesdale Dundee at Supreme Showdown. Dee Castelleno who runs Supreme Showdown always has a class for handlers with a disability.

Brian was persuaded to enter, got through to the evening championship and won. Judge Donna Taylor, who has kept in touch since said: “It was a pleasure to judge him. He is an inspiration to others and thank you to Dee for running these classes.”

Lockdown saw Brian shielding due to his medical conditions and sadly it was during this time his guide dog Emily was diagnosed with cancer. Despite treatment, she was sadly lost in 2021. This hit him hard. He lost interest in many things. When the 2022 season started Catherine told him Equi Stars shows held at Croft Top Equestrian Centre had a handler with a disability class. He said he didn’t want to enter but would sponsor in memory of Emily. Once the show drew nearer, he was persuaded by Catherine that if he was sponsoring, it he may as well enter as the rosette had Emily’s name on. Catherine said, “Of all my ponies, I decided Kettlesnout Brother Scott [Scotty] would be most suitable”.

Brian and Scotty have contested and won all the shows in the series, and he was persuaded to enter the championship at the last show which they also won. The feedback from the judges has been amazing.

Margaret Bentham said, “I had the pleasure of judging Brian and Scotty at Equi Stars. It was one of my most memorable judging moments they made my day”. Paul Hart said, “It was a pleasure to have this legend in my ring”.

Brian handles Scotty himself Catherine walks at the side telling them when to turn trot and stop. Scotty then returned to the ring with Catherine for the Shetland class and has won all 4 GEMS rosettes available. He just switches back into the showman role. Brian also helps with the ponies at home. Catherine has 8 in total mainly Shetlands but also a Highland, Exmoor and Welsh.

He helps fill nets and brings the minis, the Exmoor and Welsh. He is building up to the Highland as she is a baby. Catherine said what has been lovely is the genuine congratulations from fellow competitors. Brian said at first, he didn’t want to do it but the Royal Marines spirit kicked in and he has enjoyed it. What does the future hold? Catherine laughed and said, “he has told me to leave his jacket in the lorry!”

Vicount Victorious It was a very busy, but worthwhile four days for Laura Butters who achieved a win that she has aspired to for ten years at the CHAPS UK Championship show.

A delighted Laura explained that not only did Halstock Viscount win the CHAPS UK Final, but the miniature gelding also picked up overall reserve three-year-old of the year and reserve gelding accumulator champion.

SEARCH FOR A STAR PONY CLUB YOUR HORSE LIVE CHAMPIONSHIP We are proud to announce that we have joined with the Pony Club to offer a Lead Rein and First Ridden Championship for children 10 and under.

In addition, there will be an open class for the older children that will judge horses and ponies as suitable for all round Pony Club activities, conformation, way of going and temperament will also be important (no jumping).

These classes are open to any child or young person who is a member of the Pony Club and any type of horse or pony that is athletic enough to be an all-rounder but correct enough to be a show horse.

There will be extra awards for the best riders.

THE ALL NEW SEIB SEARCH FOR A STAR WEEKENDER Taking place in both Scotland and England, competitors will have the opportunity to come the day before the competitions and learn from the judges. They will be helped with way of going, turnout, trot-up and taught how to stand the horse or pony up for the judges.
