LET T ER

W

FROM

THE

CEO

elcome to the September/Fall issue of North Fork Real Estate Showcase. It was a great summer here on the North Fork, with one beautiful day after

another. With fall just around the corner our “second season” is about to begin. It’s the time of year for fall festivals, with the 30th annual Greenport Maritime Festival returning on September 20-22. Hosted by the East End Seaport & Marine Foundation, the festival begins on Friday night with the Land and Sea Gala cocktail party – always a fun event. Saturday morning opens with a big parade and the blessing of the waters, followed by two days chock-full of artisanal food vendors, chowder contests, sunset sails out to Bug Lighthouse and lots and lots of fresh North Fork oysters all weekend long…come one, come all! Featured on this month’s front cover, Harvest Pointe presents their award-winning 55+ community in Cutchogue. This new, modern condominium home development has been thoughtfully designed with attention to detail for its new residents. Set on 46 acres of lush farmland and natural greenery, the developers kept in mind current building trends for mature adults without sacrificing any quality or style. A brand new 6,200 sq. ft. clubhouse, complete with resort-like amenities and a full-time concierge add to the upscale ambiance of this exceptional community. Also in this issue, be sure to check out Rachel Bosworth’s “Maritime Festival Celebrates 30 Years,” featuring the iconic fall festival honoring the centuries-old history of the working waterfront in Greenport; “Best Deals,” for some great real estate values as we enter the fall selling season here on the North Fork; Anne Halpin’s “Wee Trees,” featuring a variety of compact trees for fall planting that will add character to your North Fork landscape; Alessandra Jenkins’ “East End Eats,” for a closer

rganic celery is hard to come by on the North Fork of late. As soon as it hits the shelves, it is gone. And if you should be lucky enough

to find it in the shops, it will cost you dearly. Seeking insight into this state of affairs, a reporter traveled the length and breadth of the East End until she encountered a humble greengrocer. “What’s going on?” she asked. In response, he offered an allegory, which she noted down. Once upon a time, in a land much like our own, there lived a vegetable called Kale, Queen of the Superfood kingdom. All the Superfoodistas loved kale. They chomped on it raw and they juiced it and they slurped it up in healthy green smoothies. Kale’s reign appeared secure until along came a pretender called Avocado. Avocado had star quality. It was rich and unctuous and loaded with beneficial fats and it looked great on toast. Plus it had a brilliant press agent called Social Media. In due course, Kale was deposed and the Superfoodistas declared their allegiance to Avocado, driving up its price as growers struggled to

WEE TREES COMPACT TREES ADD CHARACTER TO YOUR NORTH FORK LANDSCAPE BY ANNE HALPIN

Small trees are easier to care for than flowers – they don’t need watering or fertilizing as frequently, or constant grooming to remove spent blossoms. One important caveat to keep in mind when choosing a small tree for a bed, border, a foundation planting or a location near the deck or patio, is the size the tree will grow to be when it is fully mature. That lovely little cherry tree covered with spring flowers at the local nursery could end up being much too tall and too wide for that spot outside the front door. It could in time overwhelm a foundation planting, blocking windows, scraping against the wall, shading out other plants. If you need a small tree, make sure the one you are choosing is actually a dwarf variety. If you’re shopping at a local nursery, ask knowledgeable staff for guidance. Check the plant’s ID tag. If online, read the information carefully to find the mature height and width of the plant. Plant names can sometimes provide a clue as well. If you see words such as Nana, Compacta or Minima in the name, the tree is probably a smaller form of the species. It is essential to be realistic about the amount of space you have available and choose a tree that won’t outgrow it. Moving an overgrown tree is a big project. Here are some trees that are compact in size, or grow very slowly and remain small for years, making them good choices to combine with perennials, groundcovers or other plants, or to grow in a large
