ummer is in the rearview mirror, and all too soon autumn will be winding down.Winter waits in the wings. For those of us who live here year-round, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could have plants in bloom in the winter? That winter miracle is entirely possible…even easy to attain. Discover a magical perennial plant that sets its flower buds after Thanksgiving and blooms… yes, blooms…in late winter to earliest spring, way before the crocuses and daffodils. Flower lovers, meet the hellebores. Hellebores are evergreen perennial plants that really do develop their buds in late fall, hold them over the winter and unfurl them in February or March here. And then hold onto them for a couple of months until they finally begin to fade and dry. These plants are heroes. Snow does not bother them. During the endless snows and cold of last winter, mine were buried under a foot of snow for at least six weeks, and when the snow finally melted they were there, with their leaves and flower buds intact and none the worse for wear. As if that isn’t reason enough to love hellebores,

deer don’t bother them, nor do voles—both notorious plunderers of East End gardens. And the flowers are utterly beautiful. There are many hybrid hellebores available, many bred from the Lenten rose, Helleborus orientalis. That plant, pretty but modest, is about 18 inches high and bears clusters of downward-facing, cup-shaped creamy white flowers a couple of inches across. But the descendants of the Lenten rose have bigger flowers that come in a host of colors, ranging from white and cream through shades of palest pink to bright rose, as well as deep maroon to dramatic purple-black. There are hellebores that bloom in shades of chartreuse and salmon, and varieties with petals edged or speckled or flushed with a second, contrasting color. The hellebore spectrum is expanding all the time. The extraordinarily beautiful flowers have five broad, pointed petals arranged a center of prominent yellow stamens. There are now varieties with double or even triple the original number of petals. The flowers are set off against medium to deep green, leathery oblong leaves

that cluster in a whorl around a central point on the stem. Hellebores may form clumps over time, but they’re not invasive spreaders. And they are ridiculously easy to grow. Give them a spot in partial to light shade (they won’t thrive in full, blazing sun or deep shade. They prefer soil that is evenly moist, although they become reasonably drought tolerant when they are well established. Add some compost to the soil before you plant, and spread some around the plants each spring. If the oldest leaves look tattered after winter, cut them back top neaten up the plants and encourage new growth. Unlike many other perennials, hellebores should not be cut back in fall. You may find a limited selection of plants in local nurseries in spring, but there are many choices available from online sources. pon returning from the War of 1812, Samuel Cox constructed a tidal mill on Mattituck Inlet.The mechanism was able to harness both the incoming and outgoing tides, and was considered to be a feat of engineering in its day.The millstone itself still exists on a corner of the building and the driveshaft still stands as a pillar in the pub. By the turn of the century, the East End had become a destination spot for travelers and tourist. The gristmill was sold to the Riverhead bottling company, Yetter and Moore, and converted into a popular tavern. The storm of 1906 destroyed the tidal dam that connected East and West Mill Road adjacent to the Old Mill. Southold Town Board elected to replace it with a swivel bridge allowing boats to continue up or down creek when it was “swiveled” open. Patrons of the tavern were often asked to abandon their drinks at the bar and help crank the bridge open for yachting traffic. During Prohibition, the proximity of the Mattituck Inlet to Manhattan made the creek a popular drop-off spot for rumrunners, and tales of bootlegging in the area are legend. There is still a drop door in the floor near the

kitchen of the restaurant that allowed boats to readily transfer “hooch” during low tide when rumrunner skiffs could sneak in under the pier. With the completion of the LIRR, Mattituck grew as a tourist destination with hotels and rooming houses popping up in and around Mattituck. The Old Mill Inn enticed vacationers with promotions of “Dining and Dancing” at the lovely waterfront location. In 1939 George Naugles opened the restaurant and bar. Manager Otto Magdefrau encouraged patrons to carve their names on the overhead exposed beams. The names are still visible in the pub room where you will find a historic wood burning fireplace and a portion of the original circular mill mechanism that serves as the bar. Today’s Old Mill combines its historic past with a modern flair. The restaurant features a farm & sea-totable menu, Long Island wine and beer, open air dining deck, daily oyster happy hour and live music on many nights. The next door neighbor, Jessica Lee, invited the Committee to use her large red 19th century barn, covered outdoor seating area with charm to die for, hoop house and primitive potting shed. Four designers participated in both the 2014 show and 2015 show and decorated these age old spaces along with several new designers. The large garden in back of the house, connecting to the Lee residence, is outfitted with over-the-top decorative vignettes, including a vintage Airstream trailer. The kick-off gala which was held on August 14th was a huge success. The benefitting local charities included were CAST (Community Action Southold Town), Maureen’s Haven and North Fork Animal Welfare League. THE 26TH ANNUAL MARITIME FESTIVAL IS FUN FOR EVERYONE!

reenport, originally a major fishing and whaling port, was settled in 1682 and became an incorporated village in 1838. Now a quaint seaside resort town, with fine dining, shopping, galleries, boating, and fishing, Greenport is a charming place to relax and have fun. On September 25-27, experience the 26th Annual Maritime Festival, sponsored by the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation, co-chaired by Linda Kessler and Arlene Klein. Enjoy food and crafts, live music, pirate shows, classic boats, a parade featuring mermaids, and much more. Attracting over 40,000 people annually, it is a wonderful celebration of Greenport’s nautical history. A Land & Sea Gala on Friday, September 25, from 6-9 p.m. kicks off the Maritime Festival with a fundraising benefit co-chaired by Sarah Phillips Loth and Mary Herrick, featuring food, drink, and a silent auction. Local restaurants participate in providing superb fare. Tickets are required and all donations go to support the educational programs at the East End Museum and Marine Foundation, and “Bug Light,” the Long Beach Bar Lighthouse, owned by the museum.

On Saturday, September 26, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. there are events taking place throughout Greenport, Mitchell Park, and the Marina. The festivities begin with the traditional Blessing of the Oyster Fleet at the Railroad Dock, for a safe and prosperous season, at 10 a.m. Then observe

the Opening Day Parade and Blessing of the Waters beginning at 11 a.m. down Main Street heading to Front Street and ending at Mitchell Park Marina at noon. Local officials including Greenport Mayor George W. Hubbard Jr., the Greenport Village Trustees, along with

the local fire department will be in attendance. This year’s Person of Honor is Pat Mundus, the first female Grand Marshal of the Maritime Festival Parade. Pat Mundus, a ship captain and graduate of SUNY Maritime College, is the daughter of legendary Montauk shark fisherman Frank Mundus. Pat recently made Greenport her home and runs East End Charters, a sailing charter company now based in Greenport. “The Merry Merfolk Parade,” will also participate for the third year in the Opening Day Parade, planned by local artist Caroline Waloski of The Sirens’ Song Gallery in Greenport. This free, fun event is for children of all ages 1-100! The Mermaid Queen rides her Rowboat float surrounded by up to 60 contestants marching alongside, dressed up as their favorite sea creature or mermaid. Prizes for all at the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon following directly afterwards at Scrimshaw Restaurant. Donations will support Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s “Back to the Bays” Program. Registration required. Following the parade is “Ye Pyrate Brotherhood Show” featuring a Pirate Troop. Then view a

From 6-9 p.m. listen to live music at Mitchell Park Amphitheater and from 7:30-9 p.m. see original film screenings of Greenport at the Greenport Cinema, featuring this year’s Grand Marshal Pat Mundas.

Linda Kessler reflects, “The Maritime Festival has recently embraced the trend of keeping the focus local, mainly on Greenport, with local artisans from around Long Island and the Tri-State area.” Vendors are predominantly local featuring local artisans and local food sources. 80% of the goods are handmade by local vendors. Some local vendors participating include, Widows Whole Oyster Farm in Greenport, A Taste of the North Fork in Southold, and Nofo Crunch Granola from Mattituck. Local bands also provide music, featuring blues singer, Bruce MacDonald of Jamesport, and Points East – an acoustic father, son, and daughter trio based out of Southold. The local merchants of Greenport are a vital part of the festival and now vendors are only allowed in certain parts of town so local

merchants can present their wares on outside tables in front of their stores. 90% of the local merchants are either members of the museum or sponsors due to the changes made a few years ago in the structure of the festival. Linda remarks, “This hand-in-hand support creates a community bond. It is a merchant and local community home-based event, not your typical fair.” The Maritime Festival is not only a fun event, but donations support “Bug Light” and the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation. The museum sponsors educational programs on aquaculture and protecting our waters. It includes a gift shop, aquarium, local memorabilia, and exhibits featuring Greenport’s heritage as an oystering, whaling, and shipbuilding village. Enjoy the Maritime Festival and at the same time become a steward of our precious marine environment.
