Meet the Broker

Sheri Winter Parker, one of the most successful brokers on the East End is known for her contributions to the real estate industry, particularly in the luxury North Fork market. With a keen understanding of the local landscape, Sheri has established herself as a trusted advisor among clients and colleagues alike. Sheri’s knowledge of the North Fork makes her a go-to resource for everything and anything when it comes to the area — she is referred to as the "Queen of the North Fork".

NFRES: The North Fork is known as a boater’s heaven. Why is that?

SWP: The North Fork is surrounded by water — the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Bay — which gives you easy access to the Ocean, as well as so many great destinations like Block Island and close access to Shelter Island and Sag Habor by boat. Boaters from the gold coast and even Manhattan will make their way here for our picturesque coastline and beautiful surroundings, not to mention the bay is relatively calm and sheltered providing a safe and enjoyable boating experience for everyone.

The North Fork is also known for their charming marinas and harbors, where boaters can dock their boats, refuel, and enjoy some leisure time at the many great restaurants and shops all within walking distance.

Overall, the combination of natural beauty, sheltered waters, recreational opportunities, and access to amenities makes the North Fork of Long Island a highly sought-after destination for boating enthusiasts.

NFRES: What is the biggest change you've seen in where North Fork buyers come from over the years?

SWP: Our buyers come from all over, but the majority now would be from Brooklyn and Florida. We still have a lot of buyers coming from Manhattan, New Jersey and all of Long Island. Over the past decade or so we are seeing an increasing number of buyers from the Hamptons. The North Fork is still a hidden gem to many. Although the selling frenzy from Covid has helped increase the value of real estate, right now we are holding steady so it’s still a

really good time to buy as prices are not going to go back down.

NFRES: How would you describe the overall vibe of living on the North Fork?

SWP: It was the relaxed and unassuming atmosphere which drew me in when I first visited from Manhattan in 2000 and within 3 weeks I purchased my own home here. I immediately fell in love with the North Fork for its rustic countryside scenery. The energy here is tangible. It’s just a very good vibe, it’s a place where you truly can relax and unwind .

NFRES: Beyond the wineries that the North Fork is so well-known for, what are some hidden gem spots on the North Fork that you can share with our readers?

SWP: There are so many great places here! Just too many to list, but here’s a few worth visiting:

• Lumber & Salt in Jamesport. It’s an eclectic mix of Vintage antiques and art, plus amazing coffee and nibbles.

• William Ris Art Gallery in Jamesport. It's the North Fork's premier gallery for fine art and American craft.

• North Fork Apothecary in Cutchogue. It's a curated lifestyle emporium where you can shop and also get a hydration drip.

• Ray NY in Greenport. It's a design shop featuring vintage décor, original artwork and objects for the home.

• Lido Boutique in Greenport. Run by Heidi Kelso who combines her love of travel, fashion and art into a lifestyle brand.

• Vin e & Sand in Southold. It's a boutique bed & breakfast located in a modernized historic farmhouse. Willoughby, a new Southold salon in the Vine + Sand hotel has recently opened. Pamela Willoughby is the curator of the salon with partner, Johnny Pierce, the proprietor of Vine & Sand.

NFRES: Any favorite restaurants you would like to mention?

• Th e Old Mill in Mattituck. It hasn’t opened yet but is sure to be a hit...coming soon.

• Bruce & Son in Greenport. A must go to, serving a progressive but locally inspired menu.

• Little Fish in Southold. Offers local coastal cuisine at Kenny’s Beach.

• Th e Frisky Oyster in Greenport. Yes, the oysters and pretty much everything else on the menu is superb.

• South old Social in Southold. Owned and operated by the talented pastry chef from Paris Francois Payard.

• North Fork Table & Inn in Southold. Run by Michelin-starred

chef John Fraser and his team using the best of the North Forks local produce.

NFRES: Can you tell us a bit about your work with Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital?

SWP: During the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced my own health scare, and I am immensely grateful to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at SBELIH for their care, which led to my full recovery. This experience inspired me to make it my personal mission to raise awareness about the hospital's vital role in our community. Supporting SBELIH has become a priority for me, as I recognize their essential contribution to the well-being of our community. Serving as a board member of SBELIH is both a privilege and an honor, and I am committed to giving back and supporting their efforts in any way I can. One of the initiatives I am particularly proud of are my Shopping with Sheri Events. These high-end shopping events that I sponsor have proven to be a tremendous success in generating support for the hospital.

NFRES: Best location to catch a true North Fork sunset?

SWP: Wow, I have a few favorites… Goldsmith Inlet Beach in Peconic, Kenny's Beach, and McCabe’s Beach, both in Southold, are wonderful spots to explore. If you're looking for accommodation, I highly recommend Hotel Moraine in Greenport. It's a stunning luxury family resort. Additionally, there's Sound View, offering a variety of excellent options to enjoy the sunset, including the Low Tide Bar, The Halyard, The Piano Bar, and Jacks Shack. There's something for everyone here! Stay tuned for further insights into Sheri's story in an upcoming issue.

The Best Veggie Dishes on the North Fork

Craving a little more green on your plate?

As spring rolls around, the North Fork is the place to go when it comes to delicious, nutritious, and elegantly composed vegetable dishes. From appetizers to entrées, the chefs of the North Fork know how to work local vegetables into a dining menu. We’ve rounded up

some of our favorite veg-forward dishes for your dining consideration. (Please note: menus are often subject to change, and some of these dishes may not be available all year round, so make sure to check current menus for what’s available and most up to date.) Read on for the best, brightest, and most delicious takes on vegetables on the North Fork right now.

At the North Fork Table & Inn, chef John Fraser offers up a sublime take on vegetables with every course. The cauliflower tatin is just one incredible iteration, a gorgeous layering of cauliflower, vermouth-poached golden raisins, and Marcona almonds, all bathed in a vadouvan crème fraiche. A small plate of mushroom tempura features local Mattituck mushrooms, dusted in a wakame seasoning and nori, fried, and served with a benne seed aioli. The two-mile salad, named for the distance from which it is procured, highlights North Fork roasted beets, chicories, goat cheese from Catapano Dairy Farm, and toasted hazelnuts. And an entrée of ricotta cavatelli is amplified by earthy winter truffles, chanterelle mushrooms, and roasted celery root.

Southold’s Little Fish, set to open again soon for the season, features plenty of veggie-forward dishes for the vegetable-inclined. An appetizer of grilled olives, served with marinated sheep’s milk feta, arrives with warm pita bread and is the ideal beginning to any meal. The restaurant also serves a compelling charred lemon Caesar

salad, with Prima Donna cheese, fresh dill, and crispy croissant croutons. For an entrée, try the Forbidden Voodoo rice. The vegetable-heavy dish is made with charred pineapple, roasted peppers, beets, watermelon radish, and local greens.

Also back this summer: the century-old Claudio’s Tavern, where Greenport visitors can get their veggie fix with a baby kale salad with roasted squash, tomato, currants, and pine nuts in a white balsamic dressing. The especially hearty squash curry is one of the most satisfying vegetable dishes on the North Fork. It’s served over coconut steamed rice. Around the corner, at Noah’s, dig into charred roasted broccoli with mint, red fresno chilis, and crushed walnuts; a dish of roasted beets with avocado, oranges, spiced peanuts, and a citrus vinaigrette; or a butternut squash falafel, with roasted squash hummus, a fresh herb salad, and a date vinaigrette.

Chef-owner Robby Beaver’s Frisky Oyster, just across the street, offers veggie-seekers a delightful roasted beet salad, with Humboldt Fog cheese, baby arugula, and pistachios, which comes together with a Sherry vinaigrette. The restaurant’s vegetable ramen is fortified with bok choy, bell pepper, and edamame (it’s made with a coconut miso broth). Diners can also opt for the cauliflower quinoa cakes. They’re served with crispy Brussels sprouts and a fingerling potato salad, along with a black truffle aioli, for dipping.

Each morning when your head leaves the pillow you know you are on vacation with broad expanses of water dotted with boats and vistas of other shores. Much closer to home, only 100 miles from Manhattan, you can recreate that feeling each and every day when you develop this very private, nearly 12 acre waterfront, meadow-like parcel composed of two 5.7 acres lots spanning 350’ along the North Fork’s Long Island Sound. As gardening enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the arrival of warm weather, the landscape of garden design is poised to undergo transformative shifts.

Embracing a fusion of innovation, sustainability, and a deeper connection to nature, five compelling garden trends are set to redefine outdoor spaces and shape the gardening landscape this year.

CLIMATE-ADAPTIVE GARDENING

2024 heralds a focus on climate-adaptive gardening, where gardeners respond to changing weather patterns and environmental conditions.

Embracing resilient plant species that thrive in diverse climates, employing drought-tolerant varieties, and designing gardens to withstand extreme temperatures will be key. Gardeners will explore ways to create robust and adaptable landscapes that flourish in the face of shifting weather dynamics.

BIODIVERSITY AND HABITAT PRESERVATION

2024 is expected to see an upsurge in gardens designed to attract and support wildlife. Pollinator-friendly plants, butterfly gardens, and habitats for birds and beneficial insects will become integral parts of landscapes. Creating biodiverse ecosystems by incorporating native flora and features like bird feeders or insect hotels will contribute to preserving local ecosystems.

MINDFUL AND RESTORATIVE GARDENS

The concept of gardens as restorative spaces for mental and emotional well-being will gain prominence in 2024. Mindful garden designs, incorporating elements that promote relaxation, meditation, and sensory experiences, will take center stage. Gardens featuring calming water features, therapeutic plantings, and serene seating areas will provide sanctuaries for rejuvenation and mindfulness.

TECH-INTEGRATED GARDENING SOLUTIONS

Advancements in technology will continue

to revolutionize gardening practices. Smart gardening tools, automated irrigation systems, and apps providing plant care guidance will empower gardeners to efficiently manage their spaces. These technological innovations aim to streamline gardening tasks while ensuring optimal plant health and growth.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND PERSONALIZATION

Gardens will become canvases for creative expression and personalization. Individuality will shine through customized designs, artistic landscaping, and unique color palettes. From imaginative plant arrangements to artistic installations and sculptures, gardeners will infuse their outdoor spaces with personal flair and creative ingenuity.

In the tapestry of garden trends for 2024, the threads of innovation, sustainability, and wellbeing weave together to create landscapes that harmonize with the environment while nurturing the human spirit. These trends reflect a collective aspiration to cultivate gardens that not only flourish in a changing world but also serve as spaces of refuge, diversity, and self-expression.

As gardeners embrace these trends, they embark on a journey to transform their outdoor spaces into vibrant, resilient, and soul-enriching sanctuaries for generations to cherish.

WADING

It’s time to clean up your garden beds and borders and get them ready for spring.

Before you start, scoop up a handful of soil and squeeze it into a ball in your hand, then open your hand. If the ball stays stuck together, the soil is still too wet to dig. But if the ball breaks apart when you open your hand, it’s OK to dig. Rake up any dead leaves left over from fall. If you had mulch on the garden to protect it over the winter, it’s time to remove it. Mulches of organic materials such as hay can be added to a compost bin or pile to decompose into compost to add organic matter to your garden soil.

Clean up any debris from the garden –remove any rocks that may have been brought to the soil surface over winter, and break up any large clods of soil. It’s also a good idea to

test the soil pH (kits are available at garden centers); you can also send a soil sample to the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead to have it test more fully (for information call (631) 727-4126). Spread fertilizer (hopefully organic) over the soil surface and dig it in. Then rake the ground smooth to get ready for planting. You can find fertilizers at local nurseries as well as Agway.

If your garden is already established, all you need to do in spring is turn over the soil with a spade or tiller and work in a 1-inch layer of compost or other organic matter.

Plants are sold by garden centers and nurseries in three forms: in containers, barerooted or balled-and-burlapped. Annuals for bedding, herbs, and vegetables are usually sold in flats, six-packs or individual pots.

Herbaceous (non-woody) perennials usually come in pots.

The best way to get top-quality plants is to buy from a reputable local nursery or garden center (see the list in the sidebar).

When choosing annual bedding plants, vegetables or herbs at the garden center, look for plants that are stocky, compact and bushy. Don’t buy the largest plants — they will suffer more shock when you transplant them, and their growth will be set back. It may be tempting to buy flower plants already in bloom, but these plants may actually end up producing most of the flowers (or crop) later than smaller plants that make a quicker and easier transition into your garden.

Annual and perennial plants are usually

planted in groups or drifts in flower gardens, or in rows in vegetable plots and gardens of flowers for cutting. As the season progresses a general rule of thumb is to water when the soil feels dry an inch below the surface.

Whether you water by hand or with sprinklers or an irrigation system, it’s best to water in the morning. Try to avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, but in any case, water early enough that the plants will dry before dark. Wet plants at night are more prone to disease.

As you go through the season, spend time in your garden, daily if you can, or weekly. Cut flowers to bring indoors or in outdoor living areas where you can enjoy their colors and fragrances, or their flavors, if you’re growing vegetables and herbs.

RESOURCES FOR EAST END GARDENERS

Soil Testing: To understand the growing conditions in your garden it’s a good idea to get your soil tested. Home testing kits are available at garden centers.

A great resource is the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Horticulture Diagnostic Lab. Gardeners can have a sample of their soil tested for pH and conductivity (soluble salts). Results can be sent via email or regular mail.

Kitchen Paint Colors to Watch For in 2024

The world of kitchen paint colors is a canvas of innovation, constantly evolving to reflect changing tastes, design trends, and societal influences. While 2024’s top kitchen paint colors might not be set in stone, several potential directions are anticipated, building upon previous trends and emerging preferences.

EMBRACING NATURE’S PALETTE

Nature-inspired hues have always had a place in kitchen design. In 2024, the trend might continue with earthy tones such as warm terra cottas, soft greens reminiscent of foliage, and serene blues echoing the sky or the sea. These colors bring a sense of tranquility and organic beauty into the kitchen, fostering a connection with the outdoors.

TIMELESS NEUTRALS WITH A TWIST

Neutrals have long been favored for their versatility, and they’re likely to maintain their popularity in 2024. However, there might be a shift towards warmer neutrals like creamy offwhites, subtle greiges, or soft beiges, offering a cozy and inviting backdrop for kitchen spaces. Incorporating hints of warmth and depth into these neutrals could create a welcoming atmosphere without sacrificing sophistication.

BOLD AND VIBRANT ACCENTS

While neutrals form the foundation, bold

accents might take center stage in 2024 kitchen color schemes. Jewel tones such as deep emerald greens or striking shades of plum or wine might make appearances as accent colors on cabinets, islands, or backsplashes. These bold hues add drama and personality to the kitchen, creating focal points that command attention.

To be mindful of the market is never a bad idea, and when creating color impact try and find ways that the infusions can relate to each other and the general environment.

MOODY AND DARK ELEGANCE

Charcoal grays, navy blues, and dark browns, could emerge as contenders for those seeking a bold yet sophisticated aesthetic. Darker colors add depth and a sense of luxury to the kitchen, creating a dramatic backdrop that

contrasts beautifully with lighter elements, like countertops or fixtures, for a high-impact design.

SERENE AND SOFT PASTELS

Soft and soothing pastel shades might also find their way into kitchen designs in 2024. Delicate blush pinks, muted mint greens, or subtle blue tones could lend a serene and airy feel to kitchen spaces. These gentle hues create a calming ambiance while adding a touch of whimsy and charm.

Above all, the trend towards personalization and individual expression might drive diverse choices in kitchen paint colors. Homeowners and designers might opt for colors that resonate with their personalities and preferences, embracing unique combinations or unconventional choices to craft personalized and distinct kitchen spaces.

While these anticipated trends provide a glimpse into potential directions for kitchen paint colors in 2024, individual tastes, regional influences, and evolving design philosophies will ultimately shape the color palettes that grace kitchen walls in the coming year. Always consider personal preferences, existing decor, and the overall ambiance desired when selecting the perfect paint color for any kitchen space.
