“NEWSTALGIA” WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN ON THE NORTH FORK BY ALICE PHILLIPS

D

uring the last two years of pandemic living, “home” came to mean so much more than where you slept at night: home had become the multipurpose, multifunctional family hub for work, school and play. By necessity in many homes, functionality trumped form. Without foregoing function, 2022 reintroduces the idea that decor can be elegant, unique and personal — by mixing old with new. It’s the move to “newstalgia”. Newstalgia is all about freshening up retro furnishings and decor with contemporary accents and new technologies. It harkens back to your past, giving you the warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia with the comforts of modern-day tech. Buzzy references to “upcycling”, “reclaiming” and “repurposing”

10

are different approaches to newstalgia — incorporating secondhand, vintage and antique items to create a personalized home space that is unique, interesting and not matchy-matchy. The look is driven by a desire for every item in your home to have character and reveal a bit about you and your interests. Mixing old and new creates spaces that feel personal and look like they’ve grown naturally and organically over time. Not just a decor trend, newstalgia makes ecological sense. With so many global supply chains snarled, delayed shipments are the norm for new furniture; lead times are often 4 to 6 months or more. Purchasing secondhand or vintage items solves the timing issue while easing supply chain stress. Vintage or repurposed items are often much more

affordable and durable than newer items — to say nothing of eco-friendly and sustainable. Upcycling and reclaiming items promotes responsible environmental behavior inside the home, putting less pressure on landfills. Opting to recycle and repurpose is kind to our planet, which is already stressed by global warming and other environmental calamities. Vintage, also planet-friendly, makes use of existing items while embracing quality and durability. There is so much stuff already in the world, why not repurpose it or give it new life instead of buying something new? Investing in meaningless furniture and accessories is a thing of the pre-pandemic past. So what’s the trick to creating the newstalgia look without looking too “thrift store granny”?

decorative items, furniture, architectural and industrial salvage, vintage floorboards, barnwood and objets d’art. Other items include antique machines, farm tools, signage and reclaimed roadside architecture. Owner John Mazur and creative director Brooke Cantone will help re-envision your space by reclaiming found objects, repurposing unique material and reimagining interiors and exteriors in a whole new way. Privet’s Consignment Warehouse 54 East Main Street, Riverhead Privet’s Consignment Warehouse showcases antique furniture, rugs, artwork and bric-abrac. Wander through two floors packed with tables, chairs, sofas and unique and unusual furniture items. New inventory weekly; check their Facebook page for listings: www.facebook.com/Privets-ConsignmentWarehouse. Privet’s Consignment Warehouse

Change Function. First, look to change the function of a piece. An old side table can become a base for a dining table just by adding a circular top. An unusual decorative object can be wired to be the base of the lamp by taking it to a local electrician. A good coat of paint will completely change the look of a piece and allow you to fit it into a new space. Change Placement. Don’t forget that furniture can be moved. An old dresser becomes a “statement piece” once moved to an entry and accessorized with a more contemporary display of flowers; a pair of old end tables placed side by side make an entertainment center or dining room buffet.

boasts some of the best vintage/reclaimed/ repurposed shops around! Some of our favorites: LUMBER+Salt 5570 Sound Avenue, Jamesport www.lumberandsalt.com LUMBER+Salt is like falling down the rabbit hole of vintage items just waiting to be upcycled and repurposed. Spend hours wandering the main building and attached greenhouse, chock-filled with antique

In The Attic Too 10200 Main Road, Mattituck www.intheattictoonofo.com Family owned and operated on the North Fork for 12 years, In the Attic Too specializes in handcrafting beautiful furniture from reclaimed items, barnwood and other materials as well as refinishing furniture to specification. Need a special piece but can’t find exactly what you want? Speak with designers/builder/ proprietors Heather and Dan to special order. Browse hand poured soy wax candles, one-of-akind gifts and bric-a-brac.

Keep It Simple. When hunting for new furniture, look for strong, simple shapes that will combine with other pieces. Items which are timeworn and eclectic add a story to the interior design of your home — who doesn’t love a good story of a funky, found piece? But don’t overdo it — pick just one or two statement pieces. Keep the things you love and find a way to make them work in your space. Going newstalgia has never been easier — Facebook Marketplace, Etsy and Craigslist are treasure troves of found items looking for new homes. Aside from the usual church and hospital thrift shops, the North Fork

GARDEN OF EATING THESE GREENERY-INSPIRED SPOTS INVITE AL FRESCO DINING BY HANNAH SELINGER

W

ell, the weather outside is no longer frightful, and that means it’s time to consider eating outdoors again (and again and again and again). With spring’s arrival, so, too, comes the re-emergence of the backyard garden. Restaurants are getting green again, opening the doors to their courtyards, patios, and outdoor spaces. And we sure are glad to see it. If you, too, are in the mood for breakfast, lunch, or dinner al fresco, allow us to guide you through the North Fork’s best spots for a garden-inspired meal. These spots offer up delicious fare and even more delicious surroundings, influenced, of course, by the season. Greenport often feels like paradise in springtime, especially when the cherry trees begin their bloom. Stop in for a bite at the Olive Branch, Branch, on Front Street, where an outdoor space has been converted into a gorgeous garden bistro. Strung Edison bulbs, planters, and magnificent mature trees, and even fire pits make this dining space an

American Beech

enviable way to pass an afternoon or evening. And the Mediterranean fare is to die for! (Don’t shy away from the lamb chops — a double rack — served with jasmine rice and grilled vegetables.)

North Fork Table & Inn

At American Beech, Beech, also in Greenport, it’s a different kind of garden vibe. Transport yourself to Miami, where palm fronds and banana leaves grow, at this warm and funky hotel and restaurant. For dinner, dive into local Orient Point oysters on the half shell, burrata with sourdough bread and fig jam, striped bass with saffron and carrot broth, or a roasted half chicken with potatoes, oyster mushrooms, and sautéed greens. No matter what you order, though, the tropical vibe is strong enough at this spot to get you in the mood for a warm and lovely spring on the North Fork. Mattituck favorite Love Lane Kitchen is known for its dedication to local fare and locally produced wines. But in the warmer months, the restaurant’s petite patio is just as good a reason to visit as any other. Sitting

outside, guests can enjoy the restaurant’s comprehensive menu (Love Lane serves breakfast, lunch, and, on select nights, dinner). One of the most iconic dishes that’s perfect in these garden-inspired surroundings? Little neck clams, steamed with spicy soppressata, roasted fingerling potatoes, and a fresh herb broth and served over thick Tuscan bread. For dessert, never pass up a slice of this spot’s superlative cake. Southold’s iconic North Fork Table & Inn is always the place to go on the North Fork when you need a gentle reminder of the changing seasons. Inside, the cozy environs pair perfectly with Chef Fraser’s ambitious food. And outside, a carefully curated and green-as-can-be patio is a gleeful reminder that spring has, yes, finally sprung. But don’t allow the gorgeous outdoors to overshadow the food. This exceptional restaurant draws influence from the North Fork’s farms, local fishermen, abundant produce, and even wineries. If there is a restaurant that more deeply represents the idea of the garden, well, good luck finding it on this fork.

ART FOR CHANGE

HOPE SANDROW’S ART ACTIVISM TRANSFORMS LIVES

ow do you keep your humanity in circumstances that are inhumane? For Hope Sandrow the answer is art, and specifically art as a catalyst for change. “Art is life and life is art,” says Sandrow, “the prism through which to live my life.” Sandrow does not shy away. She does not sugar coat. Where there is darkness, she bravely shines a light, finding not only her own voice but giving expression to others.

Homeless Collaborative at the Park Avenue Armory Shelter for Homeless Women. “It was a profound experience to see the relevancy of art to life for those who had

John Ahearn, Rigoberto Torres, Detail Ernestine and Three Friends 1992

Eerily reminiscent of current events, Sandrow’s great grandparents ran for their lives from Ukraine at the turn of the 20th century. This family legacy led to a defining question, “What is the importance of art to people who have lost everything?” Younger years framed by an era of dissent and the civil rights act of 1964 grew to life-long community engagement for Sandrow. While her works were acquired by the Whitney, MOMA and The Met, she also was keenly aware of discrimination against women artists. “I made art in the ‘80s that alluded to my viewpoint of looking at art on museum walls – for example paintings celebrating the rape of women – called masterpieces,” says Sandrow who wanted to switch the narrative from being directed by men, “I walked NYC streets and picked up men and asked them to pose for my camera. I flipped the gaze.” In 1990 Sandrow founded The Artist and Hope Sandrow working with The Artist and Homeless Collaborative participants

lost the place they thought they belonged which was their home.” Trust and privacy were paramount as many residents had husbands outside who wanted to kill them. Sandrow recounts, “I was there to listen and learn and as soon as the women experienced making art with me, and later my artist colleagues, they opened up. Art is an important medium for self-representation.” As a victim of abuse herself, Sandrow admits, “It gave me the courage to expose my own personal history and transformed the holding of secrets into works of art.” At the time of AIDS and when many artists were being blamed for cultural woes it was extremely gratifying for Sandrow and her colleagues, “As soon as we got off the elevator the women would greet us, ‘The artists are here!’” Powerful images from this experience were part of a recent exhibition “Art for Change: The Artist and Homeless Collaborative at the New York Historical Society.” (Images courtesy of NYHS). Sandrow turned her activism close to home in this case, researching and taking up the

cause of the Shinnecock Nation and looking at its rich and complex history, noting the discrimination and bad treatment of Shinnecock Nation members. A chance meeting with a rooster crossing the road led to raising chickens and Sandrow has shared five thousand eggs with Shinnecock food pantry since March 2020. It is the literal nourishment to the soul. She has been an active advocate for preserving ancestral lands since the turn of this century saying after the sacred burial ground at Sugar Loaf Hill was returned to the Tribe, procured by funds from the Community Preservation Fund, Peconic Land Trust and Roger Waters, “It was the first time I had seen smiles on some of my friends’ faces.” Acknowledging the economic challenges faced in land preservation, Sandrow has a proposal, “Would Real Estate professionals, who’s expertise has raised property values, be willing to create a fund, say one percent of their annual profits, with those monies making up the difference between the appraised and market values of the land that the CPF could acquire? It would be their unique opportunity to give back while moving our community forward. Please let me know.” While aware of the many challenges still ahead, it is her “Portrait of a Chicken as an Egg Within a Golden Rectangle”, where Hope finds hope and indeed as Emily Dickinson wrote “it is the thing with feathers.” She says, “I discovered while photographing the eggs being candled they look like suns and moons and planets that have a similar cycle.” You could say in life and in art, it has come full circle.

WALLPAPER MAKES A COMEBACK

T

he moment of bold is in. If you were to step into a designer time machine and go back three, five, or even seven years, you might find the world a little less colorful. The palette of just a few years ago was a far more neutral one, embracing whites, grays, and even blacks. (Nowhere is this more apparent than in the ceaseless trend of the white kitchen.) But an exploding trend has emerged in design, after being out of favor for a number of decades: bright, vibrant, and playful wallpaper is de rigueur in the homes of the fashionable. Just ask Bryce Capp, cofounder and head creative director of the very in-demand company Milton & King. The Australian company, which Capp cofounded in 2008 with his brother, Richard, focuses on luxury fabrics and wallpapers in risk-taking colors and patterns. And their zeitgeisty designs are perfect examples of what everyone wants right now. Why is wallpaper — and bold wallpaper, in particular — enjoying a renaissance? Capp attributes the moment to a number of

18

factors. Technology, he says, allows for the development of more sophisticated, more saturated designs. Brands can also develop designs far more quickly than they could in the past. “We’re so agile, and we can create a design in a day,” he says.

VIBRANT PATTERNS ARE A DESIGN MUST IN 2022

hangers recommend ordering 20 percent over the square footage that you’re looking to cover.

Wallpaper, too, Capp says, is now playing to a younger crowd. “It’s easier to install,” he says. “It’s easier to remove.” More sophisticated products, produced in designs that appeal to a younger demographic, have shifted the idea of wallpaper. Removable wallpaper, he says, is helping to get a younger generation familiar with the idea of wallpaper, so that when they are ready to become homeowners, they are already familiar with the product. “The transformational effects that it has are amazing.”

When it comes to wallpaper, it’s ok to take risks. “Realizing the transformational power of wallpaper is pretty impressive,” Capp says. And it’s true: a little wallpaper can transform the look and feel of an entire room. Particularly popular trends of late have been botanical prints, animal-based prints, and even murals; Milton & King, for instance, devotes a section of their portfolio to fullroom murals, which include eye-popping scenes: a safari, a view of New York City, a life-size humpback whale, the entire solar system, a wooly mammoth wearing a scarf and hat, a pirate ship sailing through blackest night.

If you’re looking to test the waters with wallpaper — a design must in 2022 — you can start with a statement room or statement wall. Powder rooms are ideal for experimentation, but you can also highlight an accent wall in a bedroom, or the space above wainscoting or a chair rail in a dining room. Wallpaper

This year, splash around in the wide world of wallpaper. It’s an exciting way to bring the external world into your home, to add color, emphasis, and personality to any number of spaces. Forget about stodgy patterns and hard-to-install (and remove) rolls. This trend has taken flight. Step aboard!

DIY GARDEN

A

BY JENN NEUBAUER

fter what has felt like an incredibly long Winter, Spring is finally here. One of my absolute favorite parts of Spring are all the unique and magical flowers it brings. There is something special about bringing flowers into your home. It has a way of not only brightening up your space but the scents and colors are sure to shift your mood and bring in a bright and cheerful energy. Spring brings many beautiful holidays and it’s always a good idea to have a festive and earthy centerpiece as the focal point on your table. We gathered some of our favorite flowers from a local flower shop, Westhampton Beach Flowers, and decided to keep it more whimsical. I dug into my collection of vintage vases and thought some varying colors and sizes would look nice in a shallow box. Adding different sizes and colors allows for multiple focal points and can also add some texture to your centerpiece.

FLOWERS WE CHOSE TO USE: Tulips | Ranunculus | Daffodil Anemone | Hellebores | Hyacinth FILLER: Chamomile Assorted Mixed Greens STEPS: 1. Choose your vessel or vessels. 2. Create a base with your filler greens. 3. Create your focal point with your taller flowers. 4. Add your filler flowers. Step away, turn the arrangement and make sure it’s balanced from all angles.

4

When creating any floral arrangement, I always start with the filler greens first. It creates structure and allows for a base to then plug flowers into. Once you’ve dressed all your vases with your filler greens it’s time to insert your flowers. I begin by putting in the tallest stems first to create a focal point. It can help if you can move your centerpiece around in a circle to make sure the arrangement is balanced on all sides. Once you add height you can begin to insert the mid layer of flowers. Finally you can fill in the empty spaces with your filler flowers. It’s fun to create and most importantly to play so have fun with your arrangement and make it all your own. Happy Spring!

EMBRACE YOUR GREEN THUMB START YOUR OWN EAST END GARDEN THIS SPRING

H

ow to start a garden: Never had a garden before? I highly recommend it! It’s easy to do, great to do with young kids — get them away from their screens for a while. It’s satisfying and rewarding. My parents always had a garden, and when my brother and I were young, we each got our own little patch, with a tomato plant, a pepper plant, a few marigolds and petunias.

dappled shade will also allow you a good choice of plants. Don’t plant your garden where it will be in deep shade cast by your house, evergreens, or other shade trees with a heavy canopy. It’s a good idea to spread some compost on the soil and dig it in before you plant anything. If you’re going to have your plants in pots, you can find potting soil mixes at local nurseries and garden centers, along with bags of compost to mix in.

We have both always had a garden wherever we lived. It’s a good thing to do. If you plant flowers you get to enjoy their colors and fragrances. Bring some inside the house for bouquets.

If you’re going to make your garden where there’s lawn right now, you’ll need to first dig up the grass before you prepare the soil.

If you grow vegetables, you get to eat them (there is nothing like the flavor of a freshly picked tomato!). Grow herbs and you can pick them fresh to use in cooking.

When you have your garden dug and you’ve decided what you want to grow, you have to know when to plant the vegetables, herbs and flowers you want to grow. The calendar isn’t always a reliable guide to when to plant your garden.

Your first garden can be a patch in the ground or a group of pots on a sunny deck or patio. The first step is to decide where to put your garden. For the greatest choice of plants, look for a spot that gets bright sunlight for 6 or more hours a day. A location in light, 24

Some things can go into the ground before the last frost in spring; others need frost danger to be past and the soil warm. The dates of last frost vary from year to year; the last frost date you’ll see in almanacs and on gardening websites are averages.

BY ANNE HALPIN

A better way to know when it’s safe to plant is to use phenology — the study of seasonal indicators of climate. One good indicator to use is a lilac bush. These old-fashioned shrubs are loved for their sweetly fragrant flowers. They only bloom for a few weeks, but their scent is a little bit of heaven. And watching them gives you a reliable guide for planting. When the lilacs’ earliest leaves have grown out past the buds that enclosed them, it’s safe to plan cold-hardy plants: flowers such as sweet alyssum and pansies, vegetables like peas, lettuce and spinach, and herbs like parsley and chervil. When the lilacs are in full bloom — all the flowers on most of the plant are fully open (and wonderfully fragrant), it’s time to plant warm weather flowers like marigolds and geraniums, vegetables including tomatoes, peppers and corn, and herbs like basil. Spring weather on the East End is often unpredictable — watch nature and take her cues.
