Over the course of his prodigious career, he’s been involved with more than 50 Broadway productions, 20 films and television shows and countless other theatrical endeavors, from the West End of London to the East End of Long Island. He’s won an Academy Award for All That Jazz, an Emmy for Death of a Salesman and Tony Awards for Pippin, The House of Blue Leaves and Guys and Dolls, and has been nominated for about a dozen more. The producer, director and production designer’s additional contributions to the stage include original productions and seminal works such as Chicago, Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies, Picnic, Anything Goes, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum among others. His film work includes Mary Poppins, The Wiz, and Murder on the Orient Express, all of which he was nominated for Academy Awards. During his six-decade career, Tony has worked with: Noël Coward, Frank Loesser, Neil Simon, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Fosse, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Schwartz, Tom Stoppard, John Guare, David Rabe, Tommy Tune, Mike Nichols, Ken Russell, Paul Newman, Francois Truffaut, and Sydney Lumet. The Theatre Hall of Fame inductee, whose Tony Walton Collection is included in Library of Congress in Washington D.C., will once again be celebrated out East. A retrospective of his work will be on display at the Mark Borghi Gallery in Bridgehampton, from Thanksgiving through the end of the year. “What a terrific honor,” says Walton, who was busy readying for the show when we spoke. “I’m touched by it.”

The man who envisioned the costumes and sets for such cultural touchpoints as Mary Poppins says that he didn’t think about being a designer at all when growing up in England. He assumed he would be a surgeon like his father.

After that, there was a disappointing one-night open and close of the Broadway show Once There Was a Russian with Walter Matthau, but soon thereafter it was Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which put the young Brit on the map. A career-long string of hits followed. Notably, Walt Disney sought him out to consult visually and design sets and costumes for the movie version of Mary Poppins. “It was the lucky big break of a lifetime,” Tony recalls, noting that he at first tried to turn the offer down because he and his then wife, Julie Andrews, didn’t want to strain their relationship by working together on a film set. He eventually relented to Disney’s persuasions and was glad that he did. “Working at Disney was like being a kid in a candy store,” he says. “Incredible things happened there practically every single day.” As they have continued for the legendary creator practically ever since. “It’s been an amazing life and a wild ride,” he says. “I’m grateful.”

N

ew-build houses aren’t hard to come by in the Hamptons. Neither, for that matter, are elfin historic homes on miniature plots of land, modern castles and Brutalist barns, shingled cottages, designer pre-fabs

and farmsteads from every era. If you’re in the market for any of the above, you’re in luck. If, however, a historic, impeccably preserved mansion with original architectural details and pristine interiors on parklike estates is what you’re seeking, you will soon discover that such properties are in short supply. And so you would do well to visit the sprawling and capacious Linden Estate on Ox Pasture Road in Southampton, which is represented by Tim Davis of The Corcoran Group. The 18,000-square-foot, 12-bedroom, 12-bathroom mansion was designed by the Gilded Age architect Grosvenor Atterbury (18691956) in 1899. One of Atterbury’s most personal projects, the house was inspired both by Sugarloaf, his family’s much-loved second

home in the Shinnecock Hills, where they summered, and by the great manor houses of western Europe. Oak paneling, a hand-carved plaster ceiling, exposed beams, and other architectural appointments convey a sense of European gentility, as does the exterior with its terracotta roofline and leaded glass windows. Atterbury named this unusual property Linden Estate, after the lime trees on the once 17-acre parcel (since subdivided, it is currently 9.11 acres) — a vast greensward that was landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted, commonly known as the man who designed Central Park. Though Atterbury began his career as an apprentice at McKim, Mead & White, one of the top architecture firms of its day, and he later designed his share of country houses on Long Island, he was not solely a society architect. He was also intellectually engaged with questions of social housing and city planning, and he experimented with materials and techniques that lent themselves to low-cost projects. But when it came to the houses that comprised his summer colony practice, he did not stint on size or luxury, and he let his formidable imagination roam free. Nowhere in the Hamptons is his talent on more extravagant display than at Linden Estate, which features eight wood-burning fireplaces, two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), a fully equipped rotunda-like gym with floorto-ceiling windows all around, a steam room, separate staff quarters, a carriage house with its own greenhouse, and a grass tennis court. “The house has a remarkable history and great historic architecture,” says Steven Gambrel, the AD 100-listed architect whom the current owners hired to remodel the estate. continent, just as Atterbury did so many years before. Gambrel was seeking, he says, to emulate the “warmth and utility” of those architectural delights. To this end, he and his team determined to make every room “livable, layered with rich materials.” The estate is no period piece, however. On the contrary, Gambrel’s interiors seamlessly blend old and new. To say nothing of the ultra-modern amenities such as a spa and a pool house that is a veritable glass box, which he codesigned with his colleague Umberto Plaja. The latter addition, which was manufactured in Polenz, Germany, even has a full kitchen. And then there is the spectacular glass pavilion connected to the main house which shelters a heated indoor pool with a whimsical red slide and waterfall. Gambrel pulls off a delicate balancing act — no simple feat in a house that encapsulates centuries. For all that Linden Estate harks back to the Gilded Age, it also seems like a retreat that is very much of its time, which is to say from our time. “Linden Estate happens to surpass all the current trends — ample space, large public rooms for entertaining, intimate rooms for working at home in privacy, sports such as indoor swimming, tennis, major gym facilities, and treatment rooms,” observes Gambrel. “We even designed a family office to manage complex lives and real estate portfolios. Guests have their separate wing, and everyone feels well-accommodated.”

COMING BACK TO AMERICA I don’t know about you, but we cannot wait for the final unveiling of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, which will finally be released in early December after being delayed for a year due to the pandemic. Originally based on the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and then made into a stage play and film more than 60 years ago, the ensemble remake stars Southampton’s Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler, who makes her movie debut in it. Other familiar faces from the East End and beyond include Brian d’Arcy James, Rita Moreno, and Corey Stoll. The time is ripe for the remake of this iconic American musical, written by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim, especially considering the social justice undertones that were largely missed from the earlier versions. DELAYED GRATIFICATION We’re also quite excited about the Sex and the City revival, streaming on HBO Max starting in December. The 10-episode limited series, And Just Like That, picks up the stories of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte (no Samantha in this one) as their 50-year-old selves. Heavy on the East End talent, the show stars Sarah Jessica Parker (Amagansett), Cynthia Nixon (formerly of Montauk) and Kristin Davis. This version also includes Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson, and Evan Handler. Sex and the City was created by Darren Star (East Hampton) and based on the book by Candace Bushnell (Sag Harbor). Bushnell has even more to look forward to this year, as her one-woman show, Is There Still Sex in the City, opens at the Daryl Roth Theatre in New York on December 7. DIGGING DEEP The riveting Netflix show Narcos: Mexico is back for a third and final season. Created by Sag Harbor’s Chris Brancato, Carlos Bernard and Doug Miro, the drug drama continues the story of the Guadalajara Cartel by digging deeper into its roots. Now streaming all 10 episodes, this installment stars José María Yazpik and Scoot McNairy. STRIKE UP THE BAND Congratulations are in order for Bridgehampton’s Roger Waters, who recently got married again. He and his new wife, Kamilah Chavis, were wed at the Pink Floyd musician’s Hamptons’ home in October. BIG BUCKS BENEFIT We have got to give it up for Quogue’s Michael J. Fox, who has helped to raise a heap for Parkinson’s research. In October, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is the world’s largest not-for-profit funder of Parkinson’s research, held a benefit at Lincoln Center that celebrated the cumulative raising of $1.5 billion since its inception 20 years ago. Of that money, 88 cents of every dollar goes directly to research. Many East Enders are involved with the charity, including Board members Willie Geist and George Stephanopoulos, this year’s event co-chair Katie Couric, and attendees Richard Kind and Julianne Moore. Keep up the fantastic work! PACK YOUR KNIVES AND GO Lastly, we’re super surprised that Bobby Flay of Water Mill has parted ways with the Food Network. With shows such as Beat Bobby Flay, Chopped, Iron Chef America and Brunch at Bobby’s, the culinary creator has spent nearly three decades with the network. The first TV chef to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we’re curious to see what he’ll be cooking up next.

THE ART OF GABRIELE RAACKE

f you could leave the real world behind and enter a surreal universe of whimsy, dreamscapes, and animation, you would find yourself immersed in the art of Gabriele Raacke. Yet her images do not reflect a sanitized Disney version of fairy tales but one with more nuanced and folk lore influences. She recounts, “I grew up in the Black Forrest of Germany. We didn’t have a TV so my mother read me Grimm’s Fairy Tales. She also made up her own tales, then she asked me to do that for myself.” When Raacke was completing an apprenticeship required in Germany to be a bookseller she found herself in the place where the Brothers Grimm were born. “When I looked out of the window, I saw their statues in the market place.” A world traveler, Raacke first came to the East End with her husband in 1986 and fell in love. “We found this incredible land in the woods in East Hampton and we built our own home plus a studio and it took four years.” Their focus on energy efficiency was before its time and led to her husband’s business Renewable Energy Long Island. “It is amazing when I tell my friends we pay $5 for our electricity.”

for Bergdorf Goodman and asked her help in creating them. That was her introduction to learning how to paint on glass. Raacke now uses a process called reverse painting on glass which dates back to the 18th and 19th century in Germany. This is where the figurative image is painted first on the back of the glass then the background is painted on top of it to create a unique luminance from light reflected in between layers of paint and the glass surface. “A collector who hung my paintings would reverse them depending on his mood,” she says, “Sometimes he wanted to see only the back which was abstract or the front which was figurative so he could move it around.” Raacke finds much of her inspiration has come from world travels where she describes herself as a “sponge.” She explains, “All the images just come up while I paint. I don’t ever do sketches before.

It was a friend visiting from Brazil, the painter Daniel do Amaral who first inspired her art in the 80’s. She explains, “He came and stayed with us and every night he painted and I watched him and it was fascinating to me. One day he said ‘Why do you always watch me? Here is a brush, why don’t you try.’ I did and it was scary but he never criticized or said what is good or bad. He said, ‘Do it for yourself.’” Another friend from Cuba was making glass plates

I paint on the back of the glass and if I don’t like it, I just have a razor blade and I take it off. The hardware store was a bit worried about me with all the razor blades,” she adds with a laugh. You can see the humor in her compositions, and for her the story is very much in the eye of the beholder. “People tell me what they think the story is. Children especially are really free to tell me what they see,” she says, “Mainly I get the comment, ‘They make me very happy.’” Raacke who has exhibited widely on the East End as well as Manhattan and Germany enjoys the solo show experience such as the one she recently had at Ashawagh Hall where audiences can see the process of her work in its full scope. Raacke also contributes her creativity to the theater world with Kate Mueth’s Neo-Political Cowgirls as well as the East End East Special Players focused on adults with varied needs and abilities. “Once they took five of my paintings and they made a performance out of it. I did not say one word of what I thought. They completely made it up,” she explains, “It was great as I didn’t see it like that. I learned a lot and it was really inspiring.” Inevitably Raacke will never be pigeon-holed as a one note artist. Her newest project of creating glass menagerie figurines has the entire neighborhood bringing her glass bottles to recycle for her art. Boredom is not an option. “And that is exactly why I do it,” she says.
