nless you’re a boater or an old timer or a birder, chances are you’ve never clapped eyes on Conkling Point. Shaped like a a curved arm, this natural treasure consists of a protected bay, tidal wetlands, and a narrow sand island. A place of ecological richness, It’s one of the few nesting grounds for piping plovers and least terns on the North Fork as well as an important habitat for wild life. Clams and fish thrive in its waters. Susan Mulholland’s father, Frank Edwin Horn, was one of the area’s first developers, and

the builder of the house that she has put on the market for $935,000. On the half-acre parcel is a two-story, 1800-square-foot cottage that sits on a rise. But the real attraction is the spectacular wetlands setting, a swath of green that goes straight down to the creek and has broad views across the inlet. Disenchanted with city life, Horn, a mechanical engineer from Brooklyn with a strong entrepreneurial streak, decided to go into real estate in the nineteen-forties Having lost everything during the Great Depression, he

wasn’t one to act on impulse, but in 1946, emboldened by a successful stint managing the Braden Copper Company, in Chile, and with the blessing of his wife, Beatrice, he bought up all the land on Conkling Point--32 untouched acres of beach, creek, marshes, and buildable land covered with huckleberries and brambles--for $20,000. Starting in 1947 and through the early nineteen-sixties, Horn, who died in 1966 at the age of 72, constructed and rented out cottages, creating a small summer colony that his daughter remembers with clarity.

Standing on her side porch where geese come to visit, she can tell you about the time that a certain elderly neighbor dragged wrecked autos into the inlet in a novel attempt to mend a gap in the inlet, which had been breached by a bad storm after a sand bar had shifted. She can tell you about her family’s first house on the Point, where a shower curtain served as a bathroom door, and the noisy tourists her dad drove off the beach for fear they would disturb the sea birds. (“He was known as the man-who-chased-everybody-off the beach,” she said.) Her recollections are peppered with

the surnames of families who lived there decades ago and some of whose descendants are still there. Sages. Newsomes. Carluccis. Baldwins. “This precious enclave really is the land that time forgot,” says listing broker Jill Dunbar of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. “When you look at it, you’re seeing it as always was and probably always will be.” Buying a wetlands property isn’t for everyone. To protect the fragile eco-sytem of this precious AUGUST 2015

resource, there are a dizzying number of restrictions on building and development. (Mansion-fanciers take note: Susan Mulholland’s cottage must retain its present footprint.) ommencing on August 14th, the North Fork Designer Show House will once again open its doors. For more than three weeks, the North Fork will be treated to fun, food, and flair. The idea to do this came from seven friends who got together one day, and realized they all wanted to do some type of event for the community.They wanted to create an event that blended together charity, beauty, and the notion of North Fork locality. Kate DiGregorio, from The Corcoran Group, is one of the committee members in charge of running the event and says, “We knew there was one successful in Jamesport years ago, but there hadn’t been one on the North Fork for a while. We thought this would be a great way to generate money for the charities we support.” Numerous people will be involved in the show, hosted at the manse of the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. Kate says, “There are thirteen different spots in the original house, and this year we are incorporating four new

spots, including the barns in the back, and we now have people doing the gardens.” Previous designers from last year will be returning, while at the same time there will be plenty of new faces. The challenge for everyone, however, will be recreating and designing from scratch their selected room in the house. Everything will be redone; there is nothing repetitive from last year. The previous Designer Show Houses have each been a smashing success. So much so, that they’ve had multiple requests from people who are beyond eager to participate in this year’s. From the designers, to the volunteers, to the community at large, Kate says, “It is amazing how many people have come out to help.” All of this collaboration will ensure that this is a great opportunity that will thrive and flourish. THE EXPRESSIONS OF TONY VILLAR FROM SURFER TO ARTIST TO MUSICIAN

W

hen not seen surfing or heard strumming his guitar at Ditch Plains, Montauk in his free time, Tony Villar can be found performing at open mic sessions in Riverhead, Sag Harbor, and Springs. Vines & Hops Café in Riverhead, owned by Jeff McKay and his wife Christine, is also currently exhibiting Villar’s artwork throughout the summer featuring three of his sculptures. One is a 7-foot tiki chair, “Ominous Drifter” made of Montauk driftwood with LED enhanced eyes which can emit smoke through its nose, the other a tall curved “Mood” lamp made out of Montauk driftwood and leaded glass, and the third, a huge 3-dimensional tribute to Rick Griffin’s iconic surfing cartoon featuring “Murphy,” that Villar carved out of a cross-section of a large fallen tree, 3 ½ feet wide. From surfer to artist to musician, Tony Villar has always been a creative guy. Villar attended the School of Visual Arts in New York in the late ’60’s. Although a carpenter by trade with an artistic craftsman style, his outside hobbies are where his passions lie. Having surfed Montauk for most of his life, Villar is now rediscovering his talent for both art and music. One event that combines his surfing and art is the annual “Rell Sunn Surf Contest and Benefit” for cancer at Ditch Plains, where Villar not only surfs in the contest, but has donated his artwork as well.

As an artist/carpenter, Villar’s favorite medium is wood and his chosen carving tool is a chainsaw. From his early tikis on the beach at Ditch Plains to his unique sculptures now shown at galleries and cafés on the East End,Villar’s style ranges from abstract to realism, each work meticulously detailed and usually very large. In 1999, he created a “trueto-life” palm tree, 20-feet tall, by carving the bark of a tree with ringed patterns and individually making fronds out of polyurethane plastic, with realistic coconuts made from sponge-like foam. In 2009, his Marilyn Monroe sculpture seen surfing on his man-made wave earned him a Special Award in the Southampton Village July 4th Parade. Recently he made a reproduction of his dachshund, Clancy, out of foam, hand-painted down to the nails on his paws. His latest project is a 12-foot tall cylindrical “guard post” based on the domed garitas of El Morro Castle, a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico. Villar’s most famous works are his 28-foot mural painted on the old “Salty Dog” in Uniondale, NY in the early ’70’s and his “House on Wheels” exhibited at the Nassau Coliseum, which drew the biggest crowds at the “Long Island Custom Van and 4-Wheel Drive Show” in 1979, winning a Special Award and later featured in “Surf” magazine.

BY RUTH THOMAS Jeff McKay wanted something a little extraordinary to display along with his eclectic décor at Vines & Hops Café and when Villar’s sculptures were available, he jumped at the chance. They are now an integral part of the tapestry flowing with the cedar tree branches hanging from the ceiling. McKay exclaims, “People are blown away by the chainsaw carvings and love having their photos taken while sitting in the tiki chair by the lamp.” The 3-D surfer carving is the centerpiece of the room where guests enjoy appetizers and drinks while listening to live music, especially on Thursday open mic nights. Villar sings and plays the guitar on open mic nights at the café. Known as “Tony V.” his expressive voice, fingerpicking style, and love of ’60’s music, including The Beach Boys, Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Harry Chapin, and Cat Stevens make him a favorite each week. He regularly plays at Vines & Hops Café on Thursday nights, Sagtown Coffee on Saturdays, and Springs General Store on Sundays. But the one place you can always find Tony Villar on weekends is at Ditch Plains, Montauk, where if he isn’t surfing, he’s relaxing under his modified beach umbrella, with its bamboo-supported canopy, playing his guitar as nearby driftwood inspires him for his next carving.

A SUMMER CLASSIC HYDRANGEAS ADD BEAUTY TO YOUR NORTH FORK GARDEN

T

he billowy blue hydrangea is the iconic summer flower of the East End of Long Island. Bushes covered with blue balls of blossoms echoing the summer sky are everywhere in summer gardens on both the North and South Forks. Much as we love it, the classic hydrangea is not without its downside. Deer love to eat them, especially in winter when they will nibble the tips of the stems. That, in turn, eliminates next summer’s flowers, as does pruning the plants at the wrong time of year. This type of hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) produces next year’s flowers on stems that grow this year. Deer nibbling or pruning in winter or spring can prevent the plant from blooming next summer. But this is a problem with solutions. First, newer varieties of hydrangeas, such as Endless Summer, produce flowers on both new and old stems, so even if last year’s stems are nipped, this year’s new stems should provide some bloom. Adding some of these newer varieties to your landscape gives you blossom insurance. And don’t forget to use deer repellent. Second, if you must prune the plants to keep them at a particular height and you are growing an older hydrangea variety, you can cut back half of the stems in any given year and let the rest grow.Then next year cut back those taller stems. By alternating what you prune each year, you will have flowers every year. Third, there are other kinds of hydrangeas in

addition to the blue ones that are equally lovely in gardens and landscapes, and you can add one or more of them to your garden.The smooth-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea aborescens) is versatile and easy to care for. The best known variety, widely grown here, is Annabelle, which sends out masses of big, white snowball flowerheads in summer, on stems that grow the same year they bloom. The plants can grow tall over time, but it’s easy to control their height by cutting back the plants in spring. Just cut back all the stems or, if you have a large, mature plant, you might like to cut the stems in front shorter and the ones behind a bit taller so you’ll have flowers on multiple levels. After you experiment for a few years you will figure out how far back to cut the stems in order to get flowers at the height you want. A member of the hydrangea clan that deserves to be better known is the oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), a lovely shrub that grows to 6 feet or less, with lobed leaves resembling oak leaves, and in late summer to fall, cone-shaped clusters of white flowers, some of which take on a pink tinge as they age. Another bonus: the leaves turn rich bronzy purple in fall, and in winter the attractive, peeling russet-brown bark on the stems is visible. Another standout, the panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is a taller and more treelike shrub, and blooms in late summer to early fall. This hydrangea can provide a vertical

anchor in a bed of perennials or a backdrop in a border. You may also spot them in traffic islands around the area. The conical clusters of flowers are large and white, and the branches can arch under their weight. One favorite is the peegee hydrangea (the nickname derives from its botanical name, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’). Another showstopper is the variety Tardiva, whose flowerheads are especially large and late blooming.They are beautiful additions to late-season landscapes. My personal favorite among hydrangeas is the climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris). I am a lover of vines, which are so versatile in the landscape, but the climbing hydrangea is a queen among climbers.This clinging vine will climb the side of a building without any supporting trellis, and it’s not damaging like ivy can be. But this graceful plant is at its absolute best climbing a tall tree. The lacy white flowers are delicately textured like the lacecap forms of the classic blue hydrangea. And when flowering ends and the leaves drop in winter, you can enjoy the plant’s shaggy, peeling, cinnamon-colored bark. If deer are an issue on your property, protect your climbing hydrangea with a shield of wire mesh until the plant grows tall enough that the flowers are beyond their reach. Then enjoy this most beautiful addition to your landscape.

SPIRIT’S PROMISE RESCUING PEOPLE AND HORSES ALIKE

“P

lease do not pity them. Instead help them; do something” is not just a motto for Spirit’s Promise, a Horse Rescue Program at Blossom Hollow Ranch in Riverhead, but a mantra. The founder, Marisa Charles, has rescued thoroughbreds, Manhattan 9/11 police horses, and even horses who were at auction and about to be sold into horrible plights. With about 150,000 horses going to slaughter every year, Spirit’s Promise is a sanctuary, a haven, for these creatures that had nowhere else to go. Marisa didn’t always rescue horses. In fact, this all started because of a midlife crisis.While working for the garment industry, and then in construction, her “biggest problem of the day was what facial I would get, or what color nail polish I would be picking out.” However, once her children went away to school, she realized that she wanted to give back “to the universe.” Her husband, Jeff, was the one who suggested she should start horseback riding in order to connect with nature, and that’s when it all clicked. This would be her new, lasting project.

Spirit’s Promise offers a variety of packages, all with the intent of spreading awareness and love for these horses. A popular one, the “Head ‘em up; move ‘em Out” package, allows individuals to bring the horses in from pasture, put them in their stalls, feed them, and groom them. People can also spend a full day learning all the basics of life at the barn, host a birthday party for their kids, or even experience equine therapy. “People come and they self-discover with the horses.We help cancer patients, psychiatric patients, autistic children, and battered woman; anyone who needs us, we are there for them, and I’m the horses’ translator.” Says Marisa, who personifies all of the horses and gives them personalities. She does this in order for people to realize that these animals do have feelings, distinct traits, and can feel abandonment. With all of the programs, dances, and events, Marisa wants people to become aware of the fates that many of these horses might have succumbed to if they weren’t rescued. If horses don’t run fast enough in races, or if people can no longer afford to care for them, the slaughterhouse is often the

first place they are sent. Marisa says, “They’re magical creatures. It’s a choice for all of the horses; they have this power behind them, but they still choose to be kind to us.”This is why these horses, many of which were abused and discarded, have been given a new purpose at Spirit’s Promise as healers and teachers. “The same person that tortures them, is the same person who can stop the torture,” and because of this, Marisa also says that the horses have taught her a tremendous amount of patience and love. From Major, the Manhattan police horse who served in 9/11, to Heartbreaker, who was hogtied and kept in ropes for days to “teach her a lesson,” Spirit’s Promise wants to help people become educated about these amazing animals, and to realize that many horses out there still need help.
