community events | born to be wild—boys and girls club The 10th annual Born to be Wild auction brought 580 guests in biker attire to support the Boys and Girls Club of Thurston County. Wagner’s European Bakery supplied ALL of this year’s tasty treats for our Dessert Dash. The LOTT Troubadours provided the musical entertainment for the evening. $365,000 was raised during the event with proceeds funding the Boys and Girls Club’s mission of helping more than 2,000 kids in Thurston county realize their full potential and have a safe, fun place to go after school.

Gala Nouveau, Tacoma Art Museum’s largest annual fundraiser, was an evening of enchantment for more than 250 community members.

Guests mingled with Northwest artists featured in the silent and live auction, charming entertainers, and Chef Tom Douglas’ team provided delicious Parisian inspired bites. The event raised over $255,000 to benefit the museum’s award-winning education programs that serve more than 45,000 students, teachers, adults, youth and families.

hands on children’s museum makes events fun The idea that kids have all the fun proves untrue at the new Hands On Children’s Museum in Olympia. The rules state that normally only those adults lucky enough to be accompanied by a child can visit this landmark destination on the East Bay waterfront, featuring 100 exhibits in eight galleries, plus an art studio. But there is another way. You can host your next special event here.

Michelle Lewis, private events coordinator and development assistant for the museum, said, “It’s a great, versatile event space for everything from family events to formal receptions.”

Enjoy a waterfront view, high ceilings, murals and art installations, a café and a lobby suitable for seated banquets, all in a handsome 28,000-square-foot LEED Silver Certified “green” building. By August 2013, a new outdoor discovery area will open, with an event plaza for tables and entertainment. The best part is that guests get to feel like kids again.

“You have complete access to all the galleries and the art studio,” Lewis said, “so the events take advantage of the whimsy and all the fun activities that are available throughout.”

Or reserve one of four meeting rooms that seat from 25 to 75 people each. “Another thing we love to do,” Lewis said, “since we’re a nonprofit and we’ve had so much community support, is to offer discounted rates for other nonprofits in the area.”

The museum also tries to accommodate community meetings and support groups.

Unlike with ordinary event spaces, the rental fees at this museum benefit children. “One of the points of our mission,” Lewis said, “is to never turn anyone away and make sure we’re allowing access, despite a family’s inability to pay.”

The Hands On Children’s Museum works with preferred local caterers to make impressive events as easy as child’s play.

the art of wellness at savi day spa Jennifer “Jen” Koval, new owner of SAVI Day Spa in Tacoma, loves helping clients feel pampered, cared for and relaxed in this hectic world. She worked at SAVI for six years before acquiring the business from the previous owners in December 2011. “They knew how much I loved and valued SAVI,” said Koval. “One of the first things we wanted to do was make sure our clients knew they would receive the identical level of service from the same staff.”

A “brand refresh” integrated the spa’s relationship with Hotel Murano, with which the spa shares its address of 1320 Broadway Plaza in downtown Tacoma. This collaboration enhances both businesses. Hotel guests are offered spa treatment packages and spa guests can share in the hotel’s happy hour. You can partake in a SAVI mini service, starting at only $15, while enjoying drink and appetizer specials from the hotel.

Every SAVI experience begins with a warm welcome, the offer of tea or water, and a neck roll. A comforting robe, soft music, and candlelight add to the ambience. Enjoy a customized facial, body treatment, massage and more. Continuing education keeps SAVI’s 14 employees trained in the use of the latest and greatest products and techniques.

Koval’s spirit of giving to improve lives extends to the community too, continuing the spa’s outreach through donations and volunteering. The new owner plans to become more personally involved with auctions and other events to which SAVI donates. It’s all part of her attitude of gratitude. “Since I was young, I’ve always wanted to own my own spa,” Koval said. “So this has been an amazing dream come true for me.”

spotlight on local artisan baker rhonda hamlin A passion for baking means the cookie jar is forever full at Rhonda Hamlin’s house. This creative single mother of two children works full-time and has translated her simple joy of baking into a blossoming and delicious artisan biscotti business in the Pacific Northwest.

“I was super excited, very, very excited,” Johnston said. “The main thing about Crockett’s that makes us different is just the effort we put into everything. That’s what got me to come to Crockett’s to start with.”

Goers enrolled in weekly group meetings and activities through Better U. Originally an online program through the American Heart Association, facilitated by Franciscan Health Services, it helped women develop healthier lifestyles and understand the impact of stress.

“It taught me to be proactive in reducing stress and managing the stressors of my life,” Goers said in an interview. “I checked

my blood pressure yesterday and it was 117/78—a beautiful number compared to the 142/98 that I was registering previously.”

Through Better U, Goers met Susan Eardley, a board-certified nurse specialist and clinician for Franciscan’s Health Aware program. She educates through Health Aware, an online source of risk assessment tools, and through AHA’s Go Red For Women campaign, in which Goers also participates. The Better U program is no longer available through the heart association, but Go Red For Women Ambassadors volunteer their time to raise awareness of heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women. Stress is an accomplice in that killer’s crime.

“We work on realistic goals, how much we can do, how much we can get rid of, what is important,” Eardley said. She recommends exercise and “taking time to just take a deep breath and stop some of the adrenaline flow that builds up on us. People who are under a lot of stress have a heightened stress response. Their body is always on high alert and that does damage.”
