Capital Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric: Proudly Delivering Comfort to Its Customers

Since 1937, Capital Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric has been caring for customers in the South Sound. For three generations, the family-owned business has remained customer-focused and community driven. Today the business is owned and operated by the Schmidtke brothers, Bill, Chuck and Dean.

The company was formed by their grandfather, Bill Schmidtke, who started with sheet metal. In 1980, ownership transferred to his son Larry and wife Dianne, who modernized and expanded services. Now their eldest son Dean is the general manager. “We grew up in the business and found our footing along the way. We swept floors and washed and waxed trucks,” remembers Dean. All three sons graduated from local high schools. Dean attended St. Martin’s University and Bill went to the University of Puget Sound. Eventually all three brothers joined the family business on a full-time basis. They leverage their strengths and skills and strive to bring the best to their community.

The company has long been known for heating, cooling and sheet metal services. More recently, full-service residential and commercial plumbing and electrical have been added. “Our customers were asking for a one-stop shopping experience,” says Dean.

Capital Heating & Cooling is an ardent investor in the well-being of our community. “We partner with some incredible local arts, civic, and service organizations that serve people in the South Sound through music, theater, and the visual arts and that provide people with food, shelter and community enrichment programs.”

Support goes to many beloved organizations including the following: All Kids Win, Ballet Northwest, Harlequin Productions, Oly Arts, Lacey Spring Fun Fair, Olympia Symphony Orchestra, Rely for Life, SOGO (Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia), Thurston County Food Bank, Olympia Harbor Days, Olympia Union Gospel Mission, and The Washington Center for the Performing Arts.

“We have been treated well by the community. We want to help customers with safe and comfortable homes, make this a good community and a better place to live,” adds Dean.

American Dream Design Build: Designed for the Way You Live

Back in 2006, Jim Burbridge, owner of American Dream Design Build in Puyullup, wanted to regain control of his life. A father with two young children, Burbridge was spending three hours a day traveling to work sites for a commercial construction company. “I saw an opportunity for a different lifestyle and relied on faith when I opened this construction business 20 years ago,” Burbridge said.

Now in 2026, Burbridge has 14 employees and a design center where clients can touch the finishes, explore materials, and work with an in-house design team to bring their visions to life. What sets American Dream apart from other builders/remodelers in the area is customer service. According to Burbridge, “We go above and beyond to make sure our clients refer us to their friends and family. We want to be premier in every standpoint from craftsmanship to designers using 3D renderings, to our showroom with all the products for them to view.”

Working on projects from small bathroom remodels to full builds of homes and small commercial buildings, American Dreams Design Build maintains a client base within a 30mile radius from Puyallup. With a fine-tuned remodeling process, American Dream Deign Build puts transparency,

trust, and peace of mind first. From concept to construction, clients always know what’s happening and feel confident every step of the way. “Relationships and customer service are our priority, and we accomplish this through integrity and transparency in the process,” Burbridge said.

American Dream Design Build cultivates a design process that captures the way clients live in tandem with expert craftsmanship. The Dream Team strives for a remodeling/ building experience that feels effortless from start to finish. Their integrated process blends design, material selection, and construction under one roof, so you don’t have to juggle multiple contractors or decisions. “It’s a collaborative journey, from start to finish,” said Burbridge.

The next 20 years at American Dream Design Build will see the integration of Burbridge’s son, currently a student in Central Washington University’s Construction Management program.

OlyFed: NEXTGEN BANKING

Olympia Federal Savings, or OlyFed, is a mutual bank established in 1906. The OlyFed team pride themselves on being accountable to their depositors and borrowers rather than shareholders. They also pride themselves on contributing a significant portion of their profits to community organizations. A large area of focus for OlyFed is educating local youth.

According to Ryan Betz, EVP Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Olympia Federal Savings, “Last year we provided more than 35 financial education classes in our local high schools and community organizations.” Students learned how banks work, best practices for budgeting, how to manage credit and how to protect against fraud. “Our goal is to make sure every youth in our community gets started on solid financial footing because it’s the foundation for building a life that makes them and our community successful.”

At many local schools, OlyFed hosted account-opening events, making it easy for students to set up the checking and savings tools they need. OlyFed has a new LYFE Checking account that is designed for youth ages 12 to 18, providing them with a premium interest rate on the first $1,000 on deposit. Cleverly named LYFE because right in the middle of OlyFed is lyfe.

The LYFE account gives youth real-LYFE experience managing their money. Local youth can feel confident building good money habits, and their parents can feel good knowing they are working with trusted local service from a respected community bank.

The account comes with a debit card and students can choose from a host of customized cards for every high school and college in the area. Every time students use their debit card, OlyFed donates back to their school. In 2025, OlyFed donated over $50,000 to local schools through this program.

With these debit cards, parents can set controls. They can turn the debit card on or off from their mobile phone as well as set parameters for spending limits. Parents can also set rules so that the cards can’t be used online or outside a given geographic area.

OlyFed is proud to serve their neighbors across the South Sound with nine convenient locations designed to make banking easy, welcoming and personal.

Capitol City Honda has been a family-owned dealership since it was opened by Ed McCarroll in 1971. His daughter, Kelly Levesque, took ownership in 2017, and manages the business with her husband Chris. The commitment to family and longterm relationships is exemplified by a salesperson who worked there for 48 years alongside a technician who retired after 43 years.

The dealership is proud of its elite awards for service and sales. It has received the J.D. Powers Sales Reputation 800 and Service and Parts Reputation 800, a national recognition for high performance in customer satisfaction. The dealership is also the recipient of awards from American Honda. You will find people there do not rest on past performance and instead continue work to earn your trust. Olympia is a wellconnected community and repeat business is essential.

These days, car buyers are sophisticated. Capitol City Honda encourages you to do your research on its website. During

normal business hours, you can live chat with a real person who can answer your questions. Streamline your in-person visit by filling out your credit application for financing ahead of time.

Their business supports local favorites like the Hands On Children’s Museum, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Together Foundation and others. The 4 The Love Foundation provides groceries, holiday gifts, meals and more to those in great needs. “Our family loves supporting this local non-profit,” says Kelly.

Team RED: Trust is an Asset

When Ken and Judy Free, high school sweethearts married for more than 60 years, decided to sell their home on beautiful Trout Lake in Edgewood, they knew who to use. Kathy Kleber and her Team RED approach met their needs perfectly and they had the added benefit of knowing her for years. “Trust is the biggest asset of a real estate agent,” said Ken recently. “Kathy really has the experience with people like us who are deciding the next step as they age.”

Team RED focuses on "serving with heart." Kathy assisted the Frees in selling their lakefront home and evaluating their options of moving before selling or selling and then moving. In their case, the Frees felt most comfortable waiting until the final stages of their home sale before committing to their next place to live.

According to Kathy, “Ken and Judy had a lovely home that looked staged just the way they lived so staying in the home during the sales process worked well.” Kathy recommended a seller pre-inspection that found a few items worth fixing to ensure a smooth sale.

“Kathy knew landscapers and construction people to hire that she could already vouch for based on price and reliability,” said Ken. “It made us feel good to know we wouldn’t be taken advantage of.”

Once the sale of their home was imminent, Kathy discussed their option to hire a move manager. “Ken and Judy knew their home well and were committed to going through all the items themselves as they organized,” Kathy said. Tools went to family members and many items, perfect for the house, stayed for the buyers. Judy's beautiful artwork and collections were blessed to friends at a post-sale gifting event.

According to Kathy, “When we say we are by our seller’s side every step of the way, we want them to know it is a partnership. Every client and every home sale is a customized service.” Team RED stands beside their clients with resources for every situation and solution.

Kathy and her team offer a complimentary consultation. Serving with heart, homes for all life’s seasons.

Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital: A New Era of Care Rises in Tacoma

Since 1955, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital has played a critical role in pediatric care in our region. The new hospital campus will open in the coming weeks and it won’t just mark the debut of a state-of-the-art medical facility that costs $479 million, it signals a renewed promise to the region’s youngest patients and their families. Rising on the MultiCare campus, the new hospital represents years of planning, community investment, and a shared belief that children deserve a space designed entirely around their healing.

From the outside, the building’s modern lines and bright accents hint at what awaits inside: a pediatric-only environment built with intention. Every floor, every room, every detail reflects the voices of clinicians, families, and most importantly, the kids. Natural light floods patient areas. Each

floor has a northwest theme and artwork created by local artists brings the Pacific Northwest’s forests, mountains, and shoreline indoors.

But the heart of the new Mary Bridge is its commitment to advanced, family-centered care. The hospital brings together emergency services, surgery, cancer care, behavioral health, and specialty clinics under one roof, eliminating the need for families to navigate multiple locations during already stressful moments. Its new pediatric emergency department is purpose-built and separate from adult care offering a calmer, safer environment for children in crisis.

Technology plays a starring role as well. From upgraded surgical suites to child-friendly imaging equipment, the hospital is equipped to deliver cutting-edge care while reducing fear and discomfort. Yet the most powerful innovations may be the ones that feel the most human: larger family spaces, overnight accommodations, and thoughtful touches that remind parents they are partners in their child’s healing, not visitors.

For the greater South Sound area, the new Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital is more than a building. It’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and the belief that every child deserves world-class care close to home. As the region grows, this hospital stands ready to meet the challenge offering comfort in uncertainty, expertise in crisis, and a bright, welcoming place where children can heal, grow, and thrive. v

A New Location for Red Lantern Asian Fusion

When Red Lantern Asian Fusion unlocked the doors to its Olympia location on December 6, 2025, it wasn’t just the opening of a second restaurant — it was the continuation of a family story that began years earlier in Yelm. What started as a small, community-rooted eatery has grown into a regional favorite, and the move to downtown Olympia marks a milestone the family behind Red Lantern once only dreamed about.

The original Yelm location, opened in 2018, quickly became known for its comforting food, vibrant noodle dishes, and the kind of hospitality that makes regulars feel like family. After years of steady support and a loyal following, owners Tiffany Lin and Hung Pham felt the timing was finally right to expand. Olympia’s lively downtown and diverse food culture offered the perfect setting to share their family’s recipes with a broader audience.

At the heart of Red Lantern’s appeal is its Asian fusion menu — a thoughtful blend of Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese influences, all approached with a modern sensibility. Guests can expect everything from fragrant pho and fresh spring rolls to Mi Quang, Mongolian beef, fried rice, and a variety of noodle dishes. Vegetarian diners are never an afterthought, and the handcrafted drinks have become a quiet obsession among regulars. Every plate is built around fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and a presentation style that elevates even a casual lunch into something memorable.

The expansion to Olympia was a true family effort. Tiffany and Hung lead the restaurant with the same hands-on care that shaped their first location, supported by longtime team members who have grown with them. Their son Brandon adds a creative spark, contributing to branding and new ideas that help define the restaurant’s evolving identity. The launch, they say, was powered not only by their family but by the customers who have championed them from the beginning.

More than anything, the Red Lantern team hopes guests feel the warmth behind the food. Whether someone stops in for a quick midday meal or settles in for a celebratory dinner, the goal is the same: to create an experience that feels welcoming, thoughtful, and worth returning to. They want diners to leave satisfied, appreciated, and already thinking about what they’ll try next time.

And soon, there will be something new to look forward to — mochi donuts are set to arrive at the Olympia location in late spring, adding a playful, sweet twist to the menu.

For Red Lantern Asian Fusion, the Olympia opening isn’t just an expansion. It’s a promise to continue growing, evolving, and sharing the flavors and hospitality that have defined their journey from the very beginning. v

Crockett’s: Memorable Dining

Known for its rustic atmosphere, Puyallup’s Crockett’s Public House is located on East Stewart Avenue. Housed in a former feed store, it serves a full bar, burgers, hand-cut fries, and comfort food. Crockett’s celebrates the history of Puyallup as a train town through their décor, memorabilia and menu.

“Customers love to look at photos and recall where they were and what they were doing at that time in their lives,” said Misty Monroe, Director of Operations for Crockett’s Restaurant Group. “I’ve even heard someone say ‘hey, that’s me’ when looking at a photo.”

Well-known for featured housemade items like grilled artichokes, pub meatballs, and chicken and waffles, Crockett’s likes to mix things up with seasonally-inspired menus. This summer, customers will find new appetizers like the roasted cauliflower with Greek yogurt and tzatziki sauce and fabulous chicken strips. “We know a lot of restaurants do chicken strips, but we really worked on the recipe to make sure we got them right,” Monroe said recently.

When asked why the Puyallup location is special, Monroe said, “We have really good food and good service. I think our customers enjoy seeing the same servers on return visits and

having the same great experience every time.”

With over 35 years in the restaurant business, Crockett’s Restaurant Group takes pride in renovating buildings of historic value and renewing them. If you like the charm of Crockett’s, you’ll want to check out the other restaurants in the Crockett’s Restaurant Group, also located in downtown Puyallup, Like the Meridian café. And right next door is Trackside Pizza. Each restaurant features a warm, historical theme with the same great food quality.

In addition, the summer menu now hosts some wonderful new cocktails, including a coconut margarita and a watermelon refresher. The menu and cocktail list focus on using the highest quality and locally-sourced ingredients to

All Kids Win Fuels Success with Food for Students

All Kids Win continues to provide bags of food for area students without adequate nutrition over the weekends. Over 1,100 youth across Thurston County receive this help each week. Delivery is made to 49 schools. The 501(c)(3) strives to support youth to better be able to focus on school and ultimately to graduate.

Volunteers are integral to every aspect of All Kids Win. “Hundreds of hands doing little things make such a difference. I get to see the compassion in our community. And it happens each week,” says Matthew Klifman, Co-Chair. He started as a volunteer after hearing founder Kelly Wilson speak at an event. Klifman got involved immediately and has deepened his commitment over time.

Each bag of food contains easy-to-prepare, shelf-stable items for meals and snacks for two days. Volunteers fill them with cans of chili, tuna, and soup, protein bars, apple sauce, individual oatmeal packs, microwaveable popcorn, easy Mac cups and more. The counselors and support staff at the schools ensure pickup for the students is easy and confidential.

EXPLORE WAYS TO SUPPORT ALL KIDS WIN

Whether you are looking to help once a week or once a year, All Kids Win wants to find a place for you. There are open bagging parties, or you can gather friends and sign up for a date. Other people have prepped and organized the donations for packing. Volunteers pick up and deliver hundreds of bags each week. You can host a food drive to collect cans of chili, tuna, and $10 or $20 grocery cards.

Perhaps your skills may be in setting up or helping with special events. Participating on the board is another option.

Become a member of the All Kids Win Club to provide consistent, reliable support with a regular monthly donation. Ten dollars a month truly helps. Washington State employees can give directly through the Combined Funds Drive. Anyone can link their Fred Meyer Rewards card to All Kids Win. Businesses can become bag sponsors that include a name or logo on every bag.

Children near you face food insecurity every day. All Kids Win helps close the gaps.

2026 Gig Harbor Film Festival Opens with The Big Cheese!

The Gig Harbor Film Festival (GHFF) is gearing up for another exceptional event by opening with the award-winning documentary The Big Cheese. Filmmakers, movie aficionados, and anyone that enjoys stories can immerse themselves in screenings of independent narrative films, documentaries, and shorts September 24-27. It is a weekend of movies, Q&A’s, workshops, festive parties, and special events based at the Galaxy Theatres in Gig Harbor.

The Big Cheese is one of more than 90 films featured at the 2026 GHFF with block themes ranging from “The Rad Batch” to “Locally Sourced.” This year’s lineup includes U.S. and World Premieres, locally produced films, and curated shorts programs. Because the Gig Harbor Film Festival is focused on independent films, guests get to see movies that are not otherwise available.

More than 70 filmmaker teams are expected to attend, with strong representation from Pacific Northwest storytellers. Known as a “Filmmaker’s Film Festival," the GHFF has earned a reputation as a supportive launchpad for both emerging and established filmmakers.

Already gaining traction on the festival circuit, The Big Cheese screening will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with Seattle cheesemonger Courney Johnson and film editor Nick Weiss-Richmond. Johnson, a co-owner of Street Cheese, a

specialty shop in Seattle, is featured in the film. Audiences will dive into the competitive world of artisanal cheese mongering as the competitors prepare for the Mondial du Fromage in Tours, France. The upbeat film aims for the heart with personal challenges, passion, and historic victory.

“I knew I wanted to bring this film to Gig Harbor,” says Pamela Holt, Executive Director, after viewing it at a sold-out festival screening earlier in the year. A VIP cocktail party featuring curated cheeses from Johnson’s shop will precede the Opening Night screening.

Friday and Saturday include plenty of films, workshops, and conversations. Blocks of films are created by topics and attendees will have a program to guide and plan their schedules. Cash awards and category winners are presented on Sunday morning with the winning films shown afterwards.

“This festival is a South Sound gem!” enthuses Holt. “There is something for everyone.” The GHFF is proud to be recognized as one of the Top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals on FilmFreeway globally.
