Tacoma Art Museum Opens Decades in the Making: 10 Years of SOLA Awardees Exhibition The Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) is hosting Decades in the Making: 10 Years of SOLA Awardees, an exhibition that marks the 10th anniversary of the Support of Old Lady Artists (SOLA). On view now through November 15th, the exhibition celebrates the creative legacies of ten years of SOLA Award recipients, highlighting Washington's mature women artists who continue to shape the cultural landscape. “Decades in the Making celebrates the extraordinary contributions of women artists whose practices reflect sustained commitment, experimentation, and vision,” said Jessica Wilks, Director of Curatorial at Tacoma Art Museum. “The exhibition also recognizes SOLA’s vital role in supporting and elevating mature women artists across Washington State. At Tacoma Art Museum, we are proud to present this partnership highlighting artistic excellence, lived experience, and the lasting impact these artists continue to have on our communities.” SOLA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that uplifts, recognizes, and preserves the legacies of mature women artists. Since its founding in 2016, it has awarded $129,000 in unrestricted cash grants and produced over 30 video spotlights dedicated to equity and visibility in the arts. “This exhibition is a tribute to the extraordinary women visual artists across Washington selected by their peers as SOLA Awardees — and to Marge Levy, one of SOLA’s founders, whose support and dedication makes their greater recognition possible,” said Nichole DeMent, Executive Director of SOLA. “Marge believed deeply in celebrating artists while they are here to witness it, and this anniversary at TAM brings that vision full circle.” Presenting a dynamic survey of past awardees, Decades in the Making reflects on diversity, depth, and persistence of women whose creative practices span decades. The exhibition will
also include community gatherings and public programs developed in partnership with Tacoma Art Museum. TAM is committed to equity, community engagement, and fostering meaningful encounters with art. Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown area and a gathering place for connecting people through art via thoughtful exhibitions, exciting events, and enriching programs. vLYNN CASTLE

BELONGING STRATEGIST, WRITER, THINKER PARFAIT BASSALÉ
A New Book: The Way of Befriending – Transforming Relationships and Organizations for Belonging a unique perspective with stories and tangible ways of helping to make the world a better place. We’re so fortunate to have Parfait on the OlyFed board of directors. He helps bring together the art, science and heart of community banking to strengthen our mission of advancing the well-being of our neighbors,” says Ryan Betz, EVP/Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer for Olympia Federal.
Our culture struggles with loneliness and deep divisions. “A great many people lack genuine feelings of belonging,” notes Parfait Bassalé. There is hope. Bassalé has written a book distilling his life, education, and work experience called The Way of Befriending – Transforming Relationships and Organizations for Belonging. “I wrote this book because I believe befriending is one of the most quietly radical things we can do in response. My premise at the core is we have forgotten or are lost being in relationships we disagree with.” Bassalé grew up in West Africa and lived in Benin, Niger, and Senegal. His father’s work with an overseas company led to the family’s frequent moves, similar to those in the military. When he immigrated to the U.S., there were new experiences of looking for and finding belonging. “Understanding can be transformative, which is not agreeing,” he notes. The book integrates stories, songs and tools that readers access via a QR code for a more immersive experience. A fully audio version narrated by Bassalé is also available.
Since arriving in Thurston County, Bassalé has worked in and for the community. He was the Executive Diversity Officer at South Puget Sound Community College. Now he provides full-time leadership consulting. He is a highly regarded keynote speaker and musician. Bassalé and his wife Karima are raising their three children in Lacey.
Befriending begins in small ways. It’s a chat with your elusive neighbor or having a conversation with the barista taking your order. Practice your listening skills. Befriending is a journey that calls for courage, curiosity, and compassion. Parfait’s book can help. Order books and find events on Parfait’s website, shop locally at Browser, Barnes & Noble or purchase on Amazon. vMARY ELLEN PSALTIS

Debra Van Tuinen’s Art on Display Debra Van Tuinen is an internationally recognized American painter, printmaker, teacher, and arts advocate. She happens to live in Olympia. People can view a retrospective of her work at the Washington Center. Van Tuinen will also have a curated space at the Seattle Art Fair. “All that I experience and see becomes part of my work. How I respond physically, spiritually, and intellectually embodies the spirit of my work,” she notes. Much of her work is a study of light, texture, atmosphere, and water. One might see fog breaking, sun or moon on water, and feel the glow from the inside out. “I love the water,” Van Tuinen explains as a skier, sailor and world traveler. Van Tuinen uses a mix of innovative and ancient processes such as wax encaustic, which is where hot beeswax, damar tree resin, and pigments are layered on wood panels. She also uses a mix of paint and ink with oil over acrylic layers while using a variety of brushes. The waxy luster of encaustic painting makes for a lasting, luminous finish. VAN TUINEN ART, both the workspace and gallery, is located in downtown Olympia near the waterfront.

Everyone is Invited to Visit Lakewold Gardens in Lakewood Everyone is welcome at Lakewold Gardens, a once-private estate and retreat nestled in a Lakewood neighborhood between Gravelly Lake and Gravelly Drive. In 1987, the ten-acre property was donated to the nonprofit organization The Friends of Lakewold so that it would remain a public garden. It is a hidden gem where people can stroll the grounds, attend events, and inhale the beauty and calm of this unique legacy. It’s been a busy past two years with Justin Henderson as the executive director. Major updating and renovations have been underway. “We transformed the entry garden, added plants, and restructured the stroll experience,” he explains. The historic Wagner House with its 7,000 square-feet of area has been remodeled including a new cedar roof. “It has new life,” adds Henderson. Affordability Matters: Olympia Federal is Your Partner Owning a home is a dream that Olympia Federal helps their customers achieve. In the past three years, OlyFed has closed on more than $27 million in affordable home loans in Thurston, Mason and Lewis counties, helping hundreds of families realize their vision and reap benefits that come with homeownership. “Buying a home doesn’t need to be stressful or feel unattainable, which is why we have put together a number of loan programs and homebuyer education opportunities,” says Melissa Kirkeby, AVP/ Mortgage Loan Officer Manager. “The goal of our Affordable Home Loan program is to create the lowest possible monthly payment so that more people can qualify to purchase a home.” “The way our program is set up, we are helping families save thousands of dollars on their housing expenses each year, which can be put to use for savings or covering other important budget items.” First-time home buyers who meet income qualifications can receive a discounted interest rate based on current market rates. Additionally, qualifying borrowers can benefit from a reduced loan origination fee, from the usual 1% to a flat fee of $800.00. Borrowing can even be up to 97% of the purchase price with all but $1,000 of the down payment coming from a family gift or
down payment assistance program. Sellerpaid closing costs are also allowed. OlyFed also has loan programs for refinancing and construction. Of course, there are also many banking services available for personal and business use. Undertaking the path to homeownership can be daunting. OlyFed would like to be with you on your path so you can better understand your options, how financing works, and what you could actually afford. “I felt truly grown-up and thrilled when I signed the papers on my first house,” says one satisfied owner. “We know homeownership means stability, community, the opportunity to build wealth and to access capital through equity,” Kirkeby continues. “These are key differentiators when it comes to improving education levels, health outcomes and our overall quality of life.” Olympia Federal has offices through the Olympia area as well as Yelm, Belfair and Chehalis. vMARY ELLEN PSALTIS For Additional Information olyfed.com

Washington’s GET Plan Expands Enrollment Period Now Savers Can Sign Up for the Prepaid Tuition Plan Year-Round Washington Education Savings Plans (WA529) announced that the annual enrollment period for its GET Prepaid Tuition Plan is expanding. Formerly open from November through May, GET will now be available for families to enroll yearround. The year-round enrollment matches the structure of Washington’s 529 investment plan, WA529 Invest. Both plans are now available for Washingtonians to sign up for at any time. “WA529 is excited to make this enhancement to the GET Prepaid Plan,” said Lynda Ridgeway, WA529 Director. “Due to a more predictable state tuition environment and continued streamlining of processes, families now have full flexibility to open an account when it best aligns with their busy schedules and annual budget planning. However, we still encourage families to get started as early as possible to maximize their savings potential. “With GET, savers buy tuition 'units', and 100 units is worth the equivalent of one year of resident, undergraduate tuition and fees at Washington’s highest-priced university (currently University
of Washington). This year, for the first time ever, the GET unit price is lower than the current tuition cost, giving savers an instant return on their education savings. Since 1998, GET Prepaid Tuition has helped families pay more than $1.6 billion in educational costs. More than 73,000 students have used their GET accounts to further their education in all 50 states and around the globe. Washington Education Savings Plans also offers WA529 Invest, a nationally recognized 529 plan launched in 2018 to help Washingtonians save toward the total cost of college. Washington residents who want to help a student save for future education costs can open a GET or WA529 Invest account at any time online at 529.wa.gov with no enrollment fee. The website also provides helpful resources, including detailed information, charts, planning tools, and answers to frequently asked questions. v For Additional Information 529.wa.gov SHOWCASE MAGAZINE

Hector’s Tacos: Tex-Mex in Olympia Sweet memories of Texas are kindled when your tastebuds meet Hector’s Tacos. Make your way to the rebuild that has been underway on the corner of Fourth and Central Avenues. It’s officially Tex-Mex, and if you’re in for breakfast tacos (and more), this is your place. Owners Aaron and Lauren Rodriguez and Kurt Loertscher have turned their vision of authentic tastes with engaging service into reality. Many recipes originate from Aaron’s father, Hector, and his grandmother with help from his brothers. Food is prepared daily with the chopping of pounds of tomatoes and roasting jalapenos. Beans are soaked overnight. Hector’s food is cleanly made for everyone and has both vegetarian and vegan offerings. Everything is gluten-free except for their amazing flour tortillas. Order at the window and take it with service to their amazing Tex-Mex flavors, you or dine in. Waiting for the Right Property As couples move through life, some decisions need to be made quickly and it is important for the decisions to be the right ones. For Jan Furey and her husband, Paul Thompson, finding the property that was perfect for them outweighed their need to move closer to family and new grandchildren. Over a period of nearly six years, Jan and Paul looked for their next home while they worked on their current home in Edgewood to increase its value and get it sale ready. Early in the process, Jan turned to her friend, Kathy Kleber and her Team RED approach. “I knew Kathy socially, so I also knew she came with a team of resources to back her up and take care of what Paul and I needed help with.” Team RED stands for Resourceful, Experienced and Dedicated brokers working together to serve buyers and sellers in King, Pierce, and Kitsap Counties. Kathy Kleber is founder and Managing Broker for Team RED Real Estate, headquartered in the Federal Way’s Keller Williams office. According to Paul, “We didn’t really have a lot of experience with other realtors, and I had no idea how many different challenges are involved in selling a house. If there was ever a situation during all that extended time I felt we couldn’t handle a project or bid it out ourselves, we knew we could rely on Kathy.” Jan and Paul had lived in this spot for nearly 35 years, so they used a pre-inspection to tell them what needed to be done and used Kathy’s expertise to determine what items would increase value the most. When Jan and Paul found the right property, they knew they had to act quickly and made a non-contingent offer knowing their current property was ready to go on market. “Fortunately, we had prepared their Edgewood home well, so we could rapidly get it on the market,” Kleber said. “We refreshed the home inspection to ensure it was current, addressed a few small items, and they began packing to help make the home ready for photos and showings.”
“If you have to move, hire Kathy. She has the network and the team to find the solutions for you,” said Paul. “It’s good to know Kathy and her team are capable and get the job done,” Jan said. vLYNN CASTLE For Additional Information teamredrealestate.com Resourceful • Experienced • Dedicated

Fall 2026 Fashion: Elevated Style Meets Everyday Wearability This season, fashion is embracing a refreshing shift toward intentional dressing. Rather than chasing fleeting trends, Fall 2026 celebrates timeless style with a modern perspective. The focus is on investing in beautiful pieces that feel effortlessly sophisticated, versatile enough for everyday life, and easy to wear for years to come. Rich colors, impeccable tailoring, luxurious textures, and thoughtful styling create wardrobes that are both polished and personal. Whether you're refreshing a few key staples or looking to incorporate this season's standout trends, Fall 2026 proves that style is less about following rules and more about confidently wearing pieces that reflect your personality.
TALL BOOTS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT
Tall boots are one of Fall 2026's defining footwear trends. From sleek leather riding boots to refined knee-high styles, they instantly elevate everything from denim to dresses. One of the season's most flattering pairings is a knee-high boot with an above-the-knee dress or skirt. This combination creates a balanced silhouette while providing just enough coverage for cooler temperatures. Whether styled with a tailored blazer dress, a knit sweater dress, or a flowy silhouette, tall boots add polish and sophistication without sacrificing comfort.
LACE BEYOND THE BLOUSE
Lace is making a strong return this season, but not in the way we've seen before. Rather than appearing only in delicate tops, designers are incorporating lace into skirts, dresses, layering pieces, trims, sleeves, and even accessories. The modern interpretation feels refined rather than overly feminine, often paired with structured tailoring, leather, or chunky knits to create contrast. It's an easy way to introduce texture and elegance into an everyday wardrobe.
ROMANTIC DRESSING & THE RETURN OF COTTAGECORE
Soft femininity continues to influence Fall 2026 through romantic details that feel timeless rather than costume-like. Ruffles, flowing sleeves, gathered waists, delicate embroidery, bows, and subtle Victorian-inspired touches are appearing across dresses, blouses, skirts, and lightweight 38

shopping fall 2026 knits. The newest take on cottagecore is more polished and wearable, blending vintage-inspired charm with modern tailoring. The result is clothing that feels graceful, effortless, and beautifully detailed.
BOLD COLOR MAKES A STATEMENT
While earthy neutrals remain essential, Fall 2026 also encourages embracing unexpected color. Deep purple, royal violet, emerald green, sapphire blue, rich burgundy, and bold crimson are showing up as statement coats, knitwear, handbags, and dresses. Even adding one vibrant piece can instantly refresh a classic wardrobe. These saturated hues pair beautifully with camel, chocolate brown, black, cream, and denim, making them surprisingly versatile for everyday wear.
HIGH-LOW STYLING FEELS INTENTIONAL
One of the easiest ways to achieve an effortlessly chic look this season is by mixing elevated pieces with casual essentials. Think a structured designer handbag paired with a simple white T-shirt and jeans, tailored trousers with sneakers, or elegant heels worn with relaxed denim or utility-inspired pants. This balance between polished and relaxed creates outfits that feel approachable while still looking thoughtfully styled. It's less about matching everything perfectly and more about creating interesting contrasts.
CULOTTE PANTS CONTINUE THEIR COMEBACK
Culotte pants are proving to be one of the season's most versatile silhouettes. Their cropped, wide-leg shape pairs beautifully with nearly every shoe, from loafers and ballet flats to ankle boots and knee-high boots. They're especially practical during the fall months, offering a little more coverage while still allowing your footwear to shine. If you've invested in a beautiful pair of boots, culottes provide just the right amount of space to showcase them without overwhelming the outfit. They also layer effortlessly with sweaters, blazers, and long coats, making them an easy staple for transitional weather.
OVERSIZED SUNGLASSES FINISH EVERY LOOK
Accessories continue to play a major role this season, and oversized sunglasses are leading the way. Classic aviators remain a favorite, while bold, shield sunglasses are making a fashionable comeback with sleek, modern designs. Larger frames add instant sophistication and confidence to even the simplest outfit, making them one of the easiest ways to elevate everyday style. Whether paired with tailored outerwear or casual weekend looks, statement eyewear adds the perfect finishing touch while remaining both stylish and functional. vMORGAN MARICI

MultiCare CEO William (Bill) Robertson to Retire MultiCare Health System has announced Chief Executive Officer William (Bill) Robertson will retire on December 31. Florence Chang, who serves as president, will assume the role of president and CEO, effective January 1, 2027. The transition, which was approved unanimously by the MultiCare Board of Directors, follows a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process. “The privilege of serving MultiCare and building on more than a century of community-centric service has been one of the most rewarding roles of my career,” Robertson said. “I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our talented colleagues and community partners.” Robertson joined MultiCare in 2014, serving as president and CEO until 2022, and as CEO since 2022. Under his leadership, MultiCare has grown to become the largest community-based nonprofit health system in the region, expanding access to primary, specialty and emergency care. During Robertson’s tenure, the organization has expanded across Washington, establishing one of the most comprehensive, clinically integrated systems in the region, including the largest behavioral health care continuum in the Pacific Northwest. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank Bill Robertson for his
extraordinary leadership and the lasting impact he has had on MultiCare,” said John Wiborg, board chair for MultiCare Health System. “As MultiCare moves forward into this next chapter, the board has full confidence and trust in Florence Chang as she steps into this leadership role. She is a highly effective servant leader with a great passion for MultiCare’s mission and has a deep knowledge of the organization’s capabilities and areas of opportunity.” Florence Chang joined MultiCare in 2006 as the senior vice president and chief information officer. Before becoming president in 2022, Chang served as executive vice president and chief operating officer, where she led operations across eight hospitals and more than 180 clinics while overseeing key systemwide functions such as supply
chain, information technology, clinical support services, and facilities. “I’m deeply grateful for the chance to carry MultiCare’s mission forward,” said Chang. “I have spent much of my career here, and it has been a privilege to help build a health system devoted to the health and healing of the communities we serve. I step into this role with optimism for our future. I plan to lead with the integrity that has been the cornerstone of this organization for more than a century.” Today, MultiCare operates as a 13-hospital health system, with continued expansion underway, serving more than 2.6 million people. v For Additional Information multicare.org SHOWCASE MAGAZINE

THE HARBOR CENTER
Building a Place Where Community Comes to Life Since 2000, Gig Harbor’s senior population has grown dramatically — increasing by nearly 86% among residents aged 65 and older. This growth has heralded in a strong need for a permanent senior center in Gig Harbor. While the current temporary Gig Harbor Senior Center, located in a local fellowship hall, has worked diligently to meet the needs of local seniors, a permanent location would be ideal. Concurrently, the Gig Harbor community is also short on flexible meeting spaces for events, performances and other gatherings. The idea of creating The Harbor Center was born more than four years ago. According to Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, a founding member of the Gig Harbor Foundation, “The Harbor Center was designed through an interactive process with lots of community involvement to create three pieces to the project.” In addition to a senior center component, there will be event space and outdoor conservation space. “This entire project will be possible because of the land donation by John Allen, a Gig Harbor native who wanted to make a difference in the community he lived in and grew up in.”
