LIFE IN KITSAP COUNTY
BY LYNN CASTLE
Kitsap County is known for its deep indigenous roots and its military and timber industries. The area provides a wide array of activities to keep you and your family active and engaged in your surroundings.
HISTORY
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Kitsap County was originally named Slaughter County in 1857, but only six months later became Kitsap County, named after Chief Kitsap, a Suquamish tribal leader. To this day, the Suquamish Tribe play a vital role in the Kitsap community.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and it was invented on Bainbridge Island by three men, including Joel Pritchard, a Washington congressman. Enjoy it and many other sports throughout the county.
Other vital roles are filled in by the military via the sea. The Puget Sound Naval Station (PSNS) is one of the largest naval shipyards on earth at 650 acres. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, five of the six surviving battleships were sent to the Bremerton shipyard for repair.
Your medical needs will be met in the area by St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale which just underwent a $500 million dollar expansion project. The hospital is part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health’s system of 10 hospitals and 230 specialty clinics in the Puget Sound.
GET SOME FRESH AIR
The County is practically surrounded by water and many outdoor and water activities abound from whale watching to fantastic hiking trails. Martha Stewart visited Heronswood Garden in Kingston in North Kitsap County and called it, “One of the best places on earth.” Or, check out Hansville’s Point No Point beach park which hosts the oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound.
ARTS AND CULTURE
Kitsap Peninsula is rich with arts and culture, from museums showcasing the region’s diverse people, creations, and history to dozens of venues featuring live theater, dance, and music. A quick list includes the Kitsap Maritime Heritage Foundation, Naval Undersea Museum, the Japanese American Memorial and Puget Sound Navy Museum. Check out visitkitsap.com/arts-and-culture for a comprehensive look at what’s happening in Kitsap County.

Expanding Opportunity: Federal Broadband Investment Comes to Kitsap County New residents moving to Kitsap County are choosing a community known for its natural beauty, strong neighborhoods, and growing access to essential services, including high-speed internet. That access is about to expand in a big way. Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD) is part of a major statewide effort to bring reliable, high-speed internet to more communities, thanks to the federally funded Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program. Recently, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) approved Washington State’s final BEAD proposal, unlocking more than $1 billion in combined federal and state funding to expand broadband access across Washington. Within Kitsap County, KPUD’s preliminary award will support fiber-optic broadband expansion to nearly 4,000 homes, primarily in rural and underserved areas. The project represents a $19.98 million investment locally, including approximately $14.98 million in federal funding and nearly $5 million in state matching funds. For many households, broadband is no longer a luxury, it’s essential for remote work, online education, telehealth appointments, and staying connected to everyday services. This investment helps ensure more residents, regardless of location, have access to the reliable connectivity needed to fully participate in today’s digital world.
staying connected, Kitsap Public Utility District is continuing to invest in infrastructure that helps communities thrive.
KPUD plays a unique role in making this possible. As a public utility, it operates an open-access fiber network, allowing multiple internet service providers to deliver service over the same infrastructure. This model promotes competition, improves service quality, and helps keep costs more affordable for customers.
In Kitsap, staying connected isn’t just about technology, it’s about opportunity. To learn more about the KPUD Fiber Internet at your home or business, visit the KPUD Fiber website, enter your address to check availability at your location. You can find out if your home is included in the BEAD expansion, if a connection is currently available, or you can request a connection quote.
Expanding broadband access supports not only individual households, but also local businesses, education, and long-term economic vitality. Whether you’re working from home, launching a business, or simply

They specialize in students whose brains learn differently including ADHD, dyslexia, being on the Spectrum and executive functioning support. “We recognize that some kids need to get their brain and body connected. We help them understand their body and regain their balance and rhythm,” said Lubovich. Roughly half of their students now work with them online, giving families across the country and the world, including Australia, Spain and Canada access to their techniques. Recognized by the Wall Street Journal and other leading learning spaces for its methodology, Bright Heart Learning aspires to have their methods granted certification status so other educators can run their own tutoring/learning center in the model Lubovich created.
While Bright Heart Learning does some typical tutoring and college test prep work, their mission goes beyond education. With students, parents, and their team, the secret sauce is connection. Compared to traditional tutoring and educational models focused on content, they forge connections that remove barriers to learning and enable students’ personal growth. According to Bright Heart Learning, academic struggles are rarely just academic. Within their philosophy students need to feel safe, seen and understood. “We build emotional connection to build trust, so the student believes us when we tell them they are good at something,” Lubovich said.

COAST HARDWARE
Part of the Community Since 1906 Online shopping has changed the landscape of retail across the country, but in Poulsbo you can still find a true “mom and pop” oldschool hardware store. Offering a large selection of paint, fasteners, plumbing, and electrical, Coast Hardware is a Do It Best co-op hardware store. According to owner Nicole McCallum, “We are a 100% family-owned and community-based business which means we don’t answer to a big corporation.” Nicole’s family purchased the hardware store back in the mid-90’s, but the store has been a fixture in Poulsbo since 1906 when it first opened on Front Street. Now Nicole and her husband Nick run the store from its location on 7th Avenue NE. As a Coast Hardware co-op, the McCallums share in the profits of their brand and then reinvest in the structure of their business. In turn, the McCallums take pride in supporting their community. “We want to be a safe, inclusive place for everyone. We have a reputation in the community for taking more of a stance on issues than a corporate business might,” said Nicole.

Coast Hardware is there to help with all your DYI projects. “You tell us your problem and our custom service team, who has experience doing it, talks you through it. For many, it’s a lot better than watching a You-Tube ‘how to’ video,” said Nicole. Plus, it’s so much more than a typical hardware store. With a full locksmith service in house, Coast Hardware makes keys, plus it has automotive, fresh and saltwater fishing gear and bait, and the largest fastener collection in Kitsap County. Getting Settled into a new home
BY LYNN CASTLE
Well before you start unpacking, you should follow a few simple steps to ensure a smooth transition that also ensures your peace of mind.
GET YOUR UTILITIES SET UP Having heat and lights as soon as you arrive is a priority: • Electricity • Water and sewer • Wi-Fi and internet—does this impact your email address? • Garbage pick up service • Television—whether cable or streaming
MAILING ADDRESSES BEFORE AND AFTER THE MOVE Before: Fill out change of address forms with the US Post Office so your mail will forward. After: Change your address with your bank, credit cards, online retailers, PayPal, and other businesses you want to continue doing business with.
UNPACKING TIPS • If you moved major appliances such as a washer, dryer, refrigerator,
etc., plug them in right away and run them to ensure they work. If not, you may need to file an insurance claim or talk to your movers about compensation.

• Save your receipts for tax purposes as many expenses related to
moving for a job are deductible. • Check that all boxes are fully empty and break them down for
recycling. Offer your boxes and packing materials to others for use when you are done through OfferUp or Craigslist. Recycle any that are unusable. • In the throes of packing, you probably kept items you didn’t really
want in the interest of time. Now as you unpack, make sure you truly want the items you are unpacking before you put them in your home. Start a box for a local charity or to have a garage sale in the near future so you can meet your new neighbors.

SUNKISSED EXTERIORS
A Kitsap County Service Built on Trust and Reliability Sunkissed Exteriors has become one of Kitsap County’s most trusted names in exterior home care, known for its meticulous workmanship and consistently high customer satisfaction. As a locally-operated window cleaning and pressure‑washing service, the company has both technical skill and its customer‑first approach. According to Jonathan Lyons, owner “We pride ourselves in doing the job right, solving problems and pleasing our customers.” Serving communities across the Peninsula, from waterfront homes that battle salt spray to inland properties surrounded by evergreens, Sunkissed Exteriors specializes in restoring clarity, brightness, and curb appeal. Their window‑cleaning service is particularly valued in Kitsap County, where coastal moisture and pollen can quickly dull glass. Homeowners consistently praise the company for leaving windows streak‑free, improving natural light, and enhancing the overall feel of their living spaces. Pressure washing is another cornerstone of the business. Kitsap’s damp climate can encourage moss, algae, and grime buildup on roofing, siding, decks, driveways, and walkways. Sunkissed Exteriors uses professional‑grade equipment to safely remove these layers, revealing the original color and texture beneath. Customers often note that their homes look “years newer” after a
single service—an effect that can also help protect exterior materials from long‑term wear. The company operates on a reliable schedule, making it convenient for both home and business owners who want work completed while they’re away or before the day gets busy. Their responsiveness and clear communication are frequently highlighted in reviews, with many clients mentioning punctuality, respect for property, and a friendly, professional demeanor. What sets Sunkissed Exteriors apart is its blend of local knowledge and high‑quality service. Kitsap County’s unique mix of coastal weather, forested neighborhoods, and older homes requires a thoughtful approach to exterior care—one that balances effectiveness with preservation. Jonathan Lyons and Sunkissed Exteriors is building its reputation by understanding these nuances and delivering results that last. For homeowners and businesses seeking to brighten, refresh, or maintain their property, SunKissed Exteriors stands out as a dependable, top‑rated choice in Kitsap County and beyond.

The area surrounding The Trails at Silverdale provides several apartment buildings, new residential homes and memory care, many within walking distance or a short drive. Kitsap Transit, the public transportation, stops directly in front of the shopping center. The Trails is a popular place with lots of parking. The secondary entrance (north/side access) may be less busy and is located past the main entrance where drivers come in behind the restaurant buildings. Though The Trails is a retail hub, there are adjacent walking and biking paths. There’s a lot to see and do. Plan your next trip to The Trails at Silverdale. Minder Meats Introduces Home Delivery Program BY LYNN CASTLE With more than 83 years in business, Minder Meats of Bremerton is still dedicated to providing residents of Kitsap County with the best local products available. Specializing in fresh beef, pork, and chicken, Minder Meats produces ground beef, portion-control steaks, and sausage nearly all of which is harvested from the Northwest Region. As the main meat and seafood supplier of countless local restaurants and the operator of a retail outlet in the heart of Bremerton, Minder Meats continues to evolve with the addition of a Home Delivery Program. According to Joshua Hancock, Operations Manager at Minder Meats, “We felt the retail market for meats was underserved, especially in outlying communities and the central Kitsap area.” Implementing a delivery program was a way to solve that deficiency throughout the county. Planning to deliver in quick-time, Hancock described what that means through a timeframe scenario. If an order is received by noon, the recipient should expect the delivery by 4 pm that day. An order received by 8 pm should expect to see their delivery at their door by noon the next day. The program to be called Minder 2U hopes to begin their van delivery service in late spring utilizing a newly-purchased van. The delivery program will be available to all orders over $150. Evolution is a cornerstone of the Minder Meats business philosophy as demonstrated by their next project, a seafood processing plant. “The plant will source tribally-caught seafood, salmon, halibut, crab and shrimp in season, and bring it to market through the Minder Meats & Seafood channels,” said Hancock. Hancock, who grew up on a cattle ranch and worked in the culinary business for more than 20 years, was recently a chef at the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe Casino, the owners of Minder Meats. He and the staff at Minder Meats genuinely care about their customers and look forward to introducing new customers to their proteins that are free of both hormones and antibiotics. From Tacos to Taverns: Some of Olympia’s Best Bites If you haven’t been to Olympia in a while, now is the perfect time to make your return, not just for the vibe, but for the food. From new restaurants to local favorites, the food scene is full of stories. Meals shaped by people, families, and the traditions they carry. Whether you’re craving breakfast tacos, recipes passed down for generations, cozy date-night favorites, lively hangouts, or even a lakeside escape just outside the city, we’ve got ideas.
HECTOR’S TACOS
COVE BAR AND GRILL
Hector’s Tacos is a newer addition from husband-and-wife Aaron and Lauren Rodriguez. Based on a decades-long dream of a Tex-Mex-style eatery rooted in family and community, Oly just got more colorful.
Looking for laid back vibes for live sports, music, gathering, good food, and drink? Look no further than Cove Bar and Grill, a go-to Olympia hangout founded by Jason Gilbertson, Cody Mills, and Justin Hjelm.
Situated on Olympia’s east side, the renovated building is a combination of Austin-inspired energy downstairs and South Texas coastal charm upstairs. Named after Aaron’s father, Hector’s honors heritage through family recipes like slow-cooked charros and handmade tortillas.
Sample from a menu that’s anything but typical bar fare. Select from smoked salmon dip, craft burgers, or a Dungeness crab roll finished with lemon sauce on a soft New England bun. A strong drink program and lively energy keep the space buzzing.
With co-owner Kurt Loertscher taking the lead on a multilevel restoration, the space reflects years of detailed planning. More than breakfast tacos, Hector’s is centered on connection, and a joyful place to gather, sip handcrafted margaritas, unwind, and feel at home. 1502 4th Avenue East, Olympia
When the weather turns, garage-style doors roll up, and the experience extends out onto the sidewalk for easy evenings and good company, in the heart of Olympia. 311 Capitol Way N., Olympia
GARDNER’S RESTAURANT Visit an Olympia staple. Gardner’s is a long-standing family-owned restaurant specializing in seasonal Northwest cooking. With a softly lit atmosphere, it’s a favorite for date nights and special occasions. With candlelit tables, thoughtful dishes, and inspired cocktails, it’s a subtle balance between intimate and unpretentious, celebrating many birthdays, anniversaries, and even proposals. Sisters Sarah Felizardo and Chelse Pagel have co-owned the restaurant for over 18 years, molding its personal feel alongside Executive Chef Dayton Kuenstler, who builds the menu around what’s fresh and locally sourced. 111 Thurston Avenue NW, Olympia
THE LADY OF THE LAKE PUBLIC HOUSE Just 12 miles outside of Olympia, near Tenino, Lady of the Lake Public House at Offut Lake Resort provides a relaxed lakeside escape. The family-owned restaurant pairs lake views with casual, hearty dining and an easygoing atmosphere. Guests can settle in on the covered patio for signature cocktails like “The Lady,” a refreshing gin-based libation, along with a menu of steaks, burgers, fish, and pasta. As the sun sinks beneath the lake, the setting does most of the work. For a longer stay, nearby cottages and cabins make it easy to turn dinner into a full lakeside getaway. 4005 120th Ave SE, Tenino

Celebrating All Things Blackberry
BY LYNN CASTLE
There are so many wonderful things to do and events to attend in Kitsap County. One of the iconic events is the Bremerton Blackberry Festival. Held on Labor Day weekend every year, the festival is just steps from the Seattle– Bremerton ferry landing and set against the stunning backdrop of Sinclair Inlet. This waterfront event is filled with over 150 vendors featuring blackberry everything: cobblers, pies, donuts, ice cream, wine, jams, sauces, handmade goods, and berry-themed merchandise. According to Sunny Saunders, producer of the event and owner of Sunny Jack Events, “Over the years, the event has evolved and grown. The three-day event features a lot of kid’s entertainment and focuses on helping small businesses thrive and nonprofits gain exposure.” The Saturday, Sunday and Monday festival is filled with nonstop live entertainment on the main stage and is presented by the Bremerton Rotary Foundation. As one of their two biggest fund raisers each year, the event helps the Bremerton Rotary with scholarships, their dictionary giveaway and numerous local community projects and programs they support throughout the year. Karen Bevers, Director of Communication & Community Engagement at the Bremerton School District, is also a Bremerton Rotarian. She believes attendance at the Blackberry Festival should be on everyone’s bucket list.
“This event offers three days; each filled with something different plus it’s a special tradition that is part of the culture here in Kitsap County.” The event also offers a lot of opportunities for young people to volunteer, a major part of the educational process in Bremerton. While there is plenty of parking around the downtown core of the event, Saunders handed out this juicy tip: “Catch the foot ferry from Port Orchard and you step right off the boat into the heart of the festival.” The Blackberry Festival has a kid’s stage with jugglers, magicians and other kid friendly entertainment. There’s a Chalk Plaza with tons
of kids’ activities and the opportunity for kids and adults alike to add their artistic talents to the surrounding area with free chalk handed out to attendees. 2nd Street hosts Berry Way with makers filling the street with their wares, including Berry Central where you can pick up souvenirs of the event and berry wine, mead, and cider. SILVERDALE DENTAL CENTER
Treating with Kindness
BY LYNN CASTLE
Looking for a dentist can be a big decision when you move to a new area. Most people are looking for experienced, comprehensive, patient-centered care. A move to Kitsap County makes that decision an easy one because Silverdale Dental Center hits all those marks. It is a privately-owned dental office that has been serving Kitsap County for over 50 years. Silverdale Dental Center is a diverse family of more than 40 dental professionals who are passionately dedicated to delivering exceptional service and high-quality dentistry. According to Dr. Jason Niemeyer, “Just showing respect and kindness to patients, especially with people who have fear or pain, makes them feel heard.” This approach to patient care is prevalent throughout the team because it is the core of their business philosophy. “A few years ago, I would have told you I was most proud of my dental abilities, but now I would have to say that now I’m proud of our dental team and the culture that we have built here.” Using the latest AI technology called VideaHealth to run alongside their x-ray software, the team at Silverdale Dental Center can verify their diagnosis and validate their findings to their patients. Whole family care means the team at Silverdale Dental Center provides pediatric dentistry, airway-focused orthodontics, Invisalign, implants, periodontal care, snoring and sleep apnea treatment, as well as general dentistry. “Patients tell us they really like that they don’t have to be referred to another office for a root canal or to have an implant procedure because we can do all these things in our offices right here,” said Niemeyer.
He added, “we provide high quality dentistry that we stand by because our goal is to have patients for years and years by building a strong relationship with them using the human aspect.” Helping patients of any age, 1 to 100, improve their smile and improve their self-confidence is one of the most fulfilling aspects for the Silverdale Dental Center. One of the newer procedures being performed is called ‘All on X’. This procedure assists a patient with teeth that are really broken down, replacing them with a full arch of teeth anchored to new implants. SILVERDALE DENTAL CENTER silverdaledentalcenter.com

HEALTH CARE & WELLNESS
The Doctor’s Clinic Offers Sleep Solutions to Kitsap Residents By-and-large, CPAP is more effective than surgery. However a certain percentage of patients simply cannot tolerate their CPAP for a variety of reasons, and surgery may be another option for people who are in this category. Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea matter can affect many aspects of health. The most immediate effect is daytime fatigue due to poor sleep quality. However, untreated OSA can increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, traumatic accidents, depression, and the development of dementia in adults. In children it can cause poor school performance, poor concentration, or even hyperactivity in some cases.
The Doctor’s Clinic is helping Kitsap residents to sleep more soundly with a long tested sleep surgery. Sleep Surgery is surgery to help to either cure or in many cases improve obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep surgery can sometimes make it so that a patient no longer needs CPAP therapy. In other cases the surgery can improve the severity of sleep apnea or make it easier to tolerate CPAP. Can surgery cure my Obstructive Sleep Apnea? The answer is: sometimes. The results of sleep surgery depend upon many factors.

When we asked Doctor Christopher England of The Doctors clinic he explained, “our goal is always to try to cure the patient’s sleep apnea, of course. For Inspire therapy in particular, we are able to improve the severity of sleep apnea by about 70% and remove the need for CPAP in most of my last 40 patients. But just as importantly we were able to improve their quality of life in almost every patient and those are our three goals: improve the sleep apnea, improve the quality of life, and if possible remove the need for CPAP. Northwest Winter Safety Tips for Seniors
BY KELLY LENIHAN
During the winter months, slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses, especially for seniors. The following tips will help prevent common cold-weather dangers faced by the elderly population.
1
Avoid slipping on ice. Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall. These falls often cause major injuries such as hip and wrist fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and nonskid soles, and stay indoors until the roads are clear.
2
Dress for warmth. Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, a condition in which the body temperature dips too low. According to the CDC, people over the age of 65 are at greater risk of hypothermia-related death. So limit the time spent outdoors and dress in multiple layers with a good head covering.
battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of nonperishable foods on hand that can be eaten cold. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Move around a lot to raise your body temperature. Check out this winter weather checklist from the CDC to make sure you have everything you may need: cdc.gov/disasters/winter
6
Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to. The most important tip to keep in mind during the colder months is to ask for help. Arrange rides to the grocery store and doctor’s appointments—many communities have shuttle services specifically for seniors. Don’t be afraid to reach out or help.
3
Fight wintertime depression. Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid these issues, family members can check in on seniors as often as possible. A short, daily phone call can also make a big difference. Seniors can arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, with each person looking in on one or two others daily.
4
Check the car. Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. But it is especially dangerous for older people, who may no longer drive as often or whose reflexes may not be as quick as they once were. Get your car serviced before wintertime hits—or ask a family member to take it to a garage for you.
5
Prepare for power outages. Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a

ICE (in case of emergency). For seniors who live alone and their long-distance care team: Print out a contact card/in case of emergency card for your senior to give to trusted neighbors, landlords, clergy, and so on to easily locate family members (or power of attorney) should an issue arise. Wintertime certainly poses challenges for seniors, but with planning and awareness, you will stay healthy and experience the joys of springtime soon enough.
