Jacques Pépin, raises $2.7 million for student scholarships Friends and alumni reunited to help Saint Martin’s University raise a record-breaking $2.7 million for student scholarships at the Saint Martin’s Gala, held on the University’s Lacey campus. This year’s Gala, in-person after a one-year hiatus, featured James Beard Award-winning chef and culinary legend Jacques Pépin and his daughter Claudine who joined via livestream from Pépin’s home kitchen in Connecticut to share some of his favorite cooking techniques and recipes.

President Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D. shared, “Not only does [the Gala] demonstrate our Benedictine values of community, hospitality and stewardship, but it also helps the University raise significant funds for student scholarships. It is thanks in part to our donors, sponsors and friends of the University that we are able to provide exceptional financial support to our students, some of whose families are needing even more support due to COVID.”

Brewery Park Discovery Center to Preserve Rich Tumwater History Gifted to the community in 1962, Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls is among the country’s largest privately owned parks and is treasured by over 250,000 visitors each year. Funded entirely by the Olympia Tumwater Foundation, the 15-acre Brewery Park features walking trails highlighted by cascading waterfalls, reflective pools, and massive rock formations, as well as picnic areas, impeccably maintained lawns, a playground, restrooms, and a maintenance facility.

To ensure this slice of paradise is maintained and equipped to serve the community for decades to come, the Foundation plans to renovate and expand the existing facility into a sustainable multipurpose events and educational center.

The proposed $7.5M Brewery Park Discovery Center would have a positive economic impact on Thurston County beyond the duration of the construction project, creating jobs, attracting additional visitors, and generating new tax revenue. The Center has the support of local and state leaders, Chambers of Commerce, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Also, the Brewery Park Discovery Center will complement the expanded salmon hatchery and the City of Tumwater’s new walking/cycling trail.

Lee Wojnar, President of the Olympia Tumwater Foundation and VP of Marketing at OBee Credit Union, says, “The Center will house a vital part of Washington’s history that might otherwise fade into oblivion when vacant brewery buildings are gone. We envision the Discovery Center 8

will capture and continue to tell the history of the area through events, displays, and tribal art while developing an inclusiveness about our community.”

In 2020, the Foundation board, which receives no city, state, or federal funds for park operations, launched a planning and funding process for the new Discovery Center to better serve the public. Providence Southwest Washington Foundation recently held its annual Christmas in the Forest event virtually.

The online auction featured gorgeous decorated and themed Christmas trees, wreaths, mini trees, and unique experiences like four club-level tickets to an upcoming Seattle Kraken match with two overnight rooms at the Washington Athletic Club, and lunch for two with the chief executive on the roof of the 11-story Providence St.

Peter Hospital tower next summer. The virtual event raised more than $275,000.

When McQuiston went to work for The Rants Group in 2008, the industry was very different. But with the

“The introduction of AppFolio software into my work life has been fantastic,” said McQuiston. He added, “Now I don’t worry about lost work orders and paying our vendor bills is so much faster.” The software has created a balanced approach that allows McQuiston to effectively manage over 300 properties.

Another big change, brought on by the pandemic as well as the advent of current technology, is virtual tours.

Nearly all property tours are now given virtually with 3D presentations and extremely high-quality photos.

According to McQuiston, “We can pre-market everything and in today’s housing crunch, being able to fill a vacancy before it is actually vacant is good for the landlord, but also for those seeking housing.”

Women that Give

in the south sound Finding ways to serve those in need and to help ease worldly problems can be tougher than one might think.

Outside of simple acts of service that we can all do daily, many people find that larger, more substantial ways to contribute are often met with obstacles, such as a lack of time due to busy schedules, and confusion or ignorance on which organizations are legitimate for volunteer work or donations. These barriers are the reason why South Sound 100 Women exists.

Each year, this group of women from the South Sound help numerous small, local non-profits through large, organized monetary donations. The way it works is all 100 members get together every three months for an event where they discuss and vote on a non-profit to whom they will each give $100. By the end of the event, a $10,000 check is made out to the popular vote. South Sound 100 Women is designed to make it easier to give to one’s community and encourages women that want to step up and make an impact. A cool component of this organization is that every member is allotted time to introduce and talk about the non-profit they want to be sponsored, at every meeting. According to Rachel Young, the organization’s Marketing Manager, these events are, above all, an educational, fulfilling and inspiring thing to take part in and a great opportunity to network.

“We learn about some organizations we would never know about otherwise,” said Rachel, “because [these small non-profits] don’t usually have the marketing or the budget for it.”

A quick glance at their website shows the multitude of non-profits this group of women has helped over the years. If you’ve ever heard of Hope Vision, an organization that provides resources for those with

low-vision challenges, they are now thriving, in part because of the funding South Sound 100 Women provided. The grant Hope Vision received got a great idea off the ground and moving.

It’s clear that South Sound 100 Women makes a big difference in their local community, but unfortunately the pandemic caused the organization to lose some members, dipping them under the minimum 100 needed women. Their goal is to not only refill those empty seats, but to grow their membership above and beyond. Rachel emphasized, “There is no limit to the number of women we want to join us. We would love to name ourselves South Sound 500 Women!”

The group invites visitors to come to their scheduled events, but one must be a member to donate and participate in the voting process. They urge anyone to come and check them out, as they pride themselves on being a special group deeply committed to impacting their community. Sweet Life Boutique Now Open in Point Ruston The old saying, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,” is a fitting mantra for Donna and Peyton Stephens, owners of the Sweet Life in Olympia and now also in Tacoma at Point Ruston. The mother and daughter team purchased the Olympia location in 2018 and opened the Tacoma location in the fall of 2020 because they were shoppers who loved the store and thought owning it would be a perfect fit for the creative daughter, Peyton, and the business-minded Mom, Donna.

“I have spent most of my career years in commercial real estate, so negotiating leases and owning a retail venture took advantage of my skill set,” said Donna. “Peyton’s strengths are in the creative side of the brain, so she does the buying, merchandising and store design,” she added.

Deciding to open a second location during a pandemic was certainly a scary risk, but one that has paid off.

According to Donna, “After a little bit more than a year, the Tacoma location is providing us with an opportunity to feature more home décor given the proximity to so many residential units in the same center. The added layer of tourists keeps us adjusting inventory to fit a different customer than our Olympia location.”

Featuring clothing in sizes extra small to large, the boutique works to carry a variety of lines with varying price points to meet the needs of more customers. Dancing Goats Coffee Bar Opens in Tacoma’s Brewery District

When Dancing Goats Coffee Bar opened in the Brewery Blocks, Tacoma residents and UW students were treated to a great coffeehouse with a modern look not seen in their other Washington locations. The chic and cool-looking store features their fresh roasted coffee blends as well as the highest level of service.

The development at Brewery Blocks revitalized dining and retail space in the historic area of downtown Tacoma. Visitors enjoy outdoor café seating, ample parking and pedestrian-friendly streets with widened sidewalks featuring native landscaping. Located off the Thea Foss Waterway Bridge, Brewery Blocks also includes office space and

residential lofts making their motto “Live. Work. Play.” a reality.

This district was highly attractive to the Dancing Goats team because of its accessibility to students, museums and the downtown workforce that visits Tacoma every day. Building Your Dream Home Building your dream home can be exciting, but it can also be scary. Working with an architect that you trust and appreciate can make all the difference in keeping those fears in check.

Jennifer Weddermann, AIA, the owner of Weddermann Architecture, PLLC, in Tacoma shared a few tips with ShowCase Magazine recently on how to successfully navigate the process.

The first step she suggests may seem like the most obvious. Have a piece of land in mind. “No piece of land is truly flat, and no two sites are alike as far as access, neighbors, views, wind, or slope,” said Weddermann.

Before you buy the land or building, ask your architect to complete a feasibility study. Using online tools provided by cities and counties or even Google Earth, the study can determine setbacks, height limits, logical access, and even snow and wind load. According to Weddermann, “You’ll know up front if the land will work for your overall plan in terms of size and use.” Once the land is selected, your architect will work up a proposal for their scope of work. This is a good time to definitively determine the scale of your project, since this will translate into overall budget and architectural fees.

To communicate well during the design process, have visuals depicting what you like. At this early stage, it is important to think about the whole structure. The architect will need to know how you live and will come back with options for the layout.

Before permitting takes place, energy credits and materials should be considered as well as the selection 30

of your general contractor. They can be a great resource for coordination with structural engineering and provide insight into products and techniques to save money.

Final steps include a thorough and critical review of the entire set of documents, a meeting with the general contractor to ensure you can afford the building before you submit for permits, and then periodic site visits by your architect.

The ability to correct glaucoma and cataracts in the same procedure is an example of the evolution in eyecare treatments. For more than a decade, MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries) have expanded exciting options for treatment. Before MIGS, patients had to decide between medicine and laser or a big surgery to create drainage for glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve and is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years old. Typically, a buildup of fluid creates abnormally high pressure in the eye, but the symptoms are silent. Without regular screening, it often goes undetected so when a patient notices a loss of sight, it may be too late and irreversible.

By contrast, cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye that develops slowly over time and is more apparent. For some patients, the newest MIGS procedures can correct cataracts and glaucoma issues through the same incision.

“Many patients with cataracts are great candidates to also treat their glaucoma issues in the same procedure, adding very little extra time to the surgery but with the same recovery time, “ said Dr. Roger Anderson of Tacoma’s Evergreen Eye Center.

Almost 30 percent of Americans under 45 don’t know the five most common signs of stroke according to recent research, and alarmingly this same age group is seeing a rise in strokes. While medical science continues to improve outcomes for stroke survivors, early identification followed by immediate medical attention can make a significant impact on the severity and complications of a stroke.

Andrea Engfer was lucky. Her husband knew something was wrong and acted fast. Days after giving birth to their first child, he rushed Andrea to urgent care when she complained of an extreme headache. “My headache turned into a migraine so bad that I started crying. On the way [to urgent care] I couldn’t keep my eyes open.

Then I let out a big scream because it felt like my head was going to explode. After that I don’t remember anything,” recounted Andrea.

For the next 12 days, Andrea was in a medically induced coma with her young family desperately hoping she’d be okay. She had suffered a significant brain hemorrhage and the doctors thought she might never see again because the type of stroke she suffered severely impacted eyesight. After 43 days in the hospital and intensive physical therapy, Andrea relearned to walk, talk, read and write, although she still has a vision deficit and deals with memory loss and cognitive issues.

They think that they need to lift huge amounts of weight to see a benefit, and that simply isn’t true,” Zach explains.

We all know that basic movements like walking and stretching are important elements of a lifestyle at every age. Just 30 minutes of walking every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.

You may be surprised to learn that the benefits of weight training are even more important when it comes to improving longevity and decreasing falls. Many people know weightlifting is hugely beneficial in younger adults but think light walking or recreational activity is “good enough” for seniors. There is a misconception that olderaged individuals should stay away from any strenuous activity that can build strength like weightlifting. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Zach and his team say that, on average, participants in their strength training program, which includes adaptable programming for people at every fitness level, see a 30% increase in strength in less than six months of consistent training. This includes an increase in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fitness, key factors in injury prevention among older adults.

This is especially important for seniors who hope to remain active in their favorite activities and sports.

Of course, the greater the weight the more dramatic the results; however, you can get great results using weights as light as 2.5 to 5 pounds.

Resistance bands are another great and easyto-use option. Safety is top priority with any fitness program. To keep it safe, carefully warm up and cool down, and focus on using the correct range of motion.
