F ROM T HE E d i tor Value? In day-to-day conversations I rarely use the word. When it comes to value, I’ve probably taken the definition for granted. Let me rephrase that, over my life I’ve ignored value and that’s a shame.

Not in everything, I know the value of my friendships, not to sound cliché, but they are priceless. Which leads me to something else, it’s easy to blend the words “price” and “value,” but there is a huge difference.

Let’s say you are at a yard sale and you spot an old Star Wars toy and you think, I remember those toys, but five bucks is too much for an old Luke Skywalker, the paint is chipped and he’s missing his lightsaber.

So you pass it by. The next guy comes along and would gladly pay three times as much for the toy because it reminds him of a Christmas morning in 1977 when he gathered around the tree with his family.

That’s value.

Everything has value, but in most instances value will depreciate unless you care for it.

Priceless friendships are not formed at the first hello. They take nurturing to get to the point of being a tagline for a credit card commercial.

I learned about value from one of the strangest places — a television show. Toy Hunter follows a guy as he travels around the country looking for rare toys to buy and sell. While it’s become his livelihood, he does it out of love for the memories from his childhood. Watching the show is a trip down memory lane for me. At times, I think, Hey, I had that, and I smile thinking

about a childhood memory. Other times I think, That’s worth 300 bucks? I had that, and kick myself for shooting my Micronauts with a BB gun. I am the guy at the yard sale that would pay triple for a tangible grasp on the memory.

Out of curiosity I researched the usage of the world “value.” It didn’t register on any list I found. But the word the “time” is the most used noun in the English language.

Charles Darwin, who happened to be pretty bright, said, “A man who dares waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” In my book that makes value pretty important.

Only if I had understood the meaning of value before I had a battle royal with my Planet of the Apes actions figures. I’d love to have them “posed” on a shelf in my office. That would really help me unleash my inner-geek. But I’ll save that for another time.

Let’s face it, many times the little sticker on the windshield that states your car is overdue for an oil change gets put off until another day. Owner’s manuals of newer cars suggest longer intervals between oil changes. That may seem like a blessing, but frequent oil changes flush abrasive debris out of the engine, keeping your engine healthier.

Most manuals also have a recommendation for “severe conditions,” such as regularly driving in stop-and-go traffic. To prolong the engine follow the severe conditions guidelines.

Rotating tires aids in distributing wear evenly. Regular rotation helps you get the maximum road life from tires. If the owner’s manual doesn’t recommend a rotation pattern, do it every 6,000 to 7,500 miles.

If you’ve maintained the correct tire inflation and you notice uneven wear it could be time for a wheel realignment.

Look For Missing Caps You may think that the valve cap isn’t that important. That will change if you wake up to a missing valve cap and flat tire. Caps keep out dirt and moisture which can lead to leaky valves.

Tread Safely

Most states require drivers to replace tires when they have worn down to one-sixteenth inch of remaining tire depth. Tires are equipped with “wear bars” molded into them to help gauge when a tire needs replacing. If you see metal, replace immediately. If driving in a location that gets a lot of rain, you should replace tires when they have worn down to one-eighth inch of remaining tire depth. An easy test is to place a quarter between the tread. If part of George Washington’s head is covered, driving in rain is safe. For snow, place a penny between the treads. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is covered, your tires are prepared for winter weather.

Keep it Pretty You drive your new car off the lot, you want to coddle it, keep it in pristine shape, but the world has different ideas. Before you know it you’re dodging shopping carts and trying to shield your car from bird bombings.

It’s difficult, but with a little T.L.C. and preventative maintenance, your car will be as shiny as the day you spotted it at the dealership.

It’s important to protect the paint as it’s the car’s first defense against rust. Ideally, the ultimate protection is to park in a garage or under a carport, but that’s not always available. Park in the shade or use a car cover.

Don’t Brush Off That Little Chip Rust is a natural enemy to your car. It’s a parasite looking for an opening. While paint protects the car’s body from rust, one little nick is enough to give rust a foothold. Touch it up as soon as possible because paint doesn’t adhere well to rust.

Wax On. Wax Off. Mr. Miyagi was onto something. Waxing can be a daunting task, but it’s essential in keeping your car’s shine. Waxing slows oxidation, in turn, preserving paint. It also acts as a shield against sap, pollution, and bird droppings.

A Winter Cleaning It’s easy to think, There is no need to wash my car, it’s just going to get dirty again when it snows this weekend. But allowing chemicals such as road salt to build up on your car isn’t good for the paint. Combine that with rain, slush, and snow and you have a rust-making cocktail.

Tape It Up A cracked taillight or signal cover is not only an eyesore, if left alone, water can fill the light compartment and do real damage. Replace the damaged cover as soon as possible, but in the meantime use a piece of tape to seal the crack.

The Best Wax Job Paste wax is king when it comes to a long-lasting finish. Paste with high carnauba wax content is tops.

Use a damp sponge to apply a thin, even coat of wax. Don’t overdo it. Too much wax makes removal difficult and leaves excess residue.

Avoid scratches by using a clean microfiber or cotton cloth to remove wax once it dries.

The hood and nose could use a second coat. Apply extra wax to these areas as wax film tends to wear away faster.

Beauty on the Inside The area of your car that you see the most is the interior, so it’s logical that the interior takes its share of heavy wear and tear. Follow these tips to keep it looking like it just left the dealership — new “car smell” not included.

Be Shady Rays from the sun can damage the car’s interior. If a garage is not available, park in the shade. If you park under trees and birds decide to use your car for target practice, invest in a car shade.

Shades are inexpensive and they help to block out UV rays. Plus, they keep your car a tad cooler.

Don’t Be Messy Since you spend so much time in your car, it shouldn’t look like a pigpen. Clean the interior with every car wash. Spilled liquid such as soda, everyone’s guilty, can be corrosive. When vacuuming, use the proper vacuum wands to avoid marring and scratching surfaces.

Uphold the Upholstery Without proper care, leather seats will dry and crack. Use leather cleaner to remove stains and dirt, and then apply a leather protectant. For cloth seats, the same upholstery cleaners used for furniture works. Be careful not to saturate the fabric.

Protectants such as Scotchguard will help carpet and cloth seats to resist stains.

Don’t Let It Rain On Your Parade Faulty weather-stripping is a major culprit in most leaks. Inspect weather-stripping regularly, if imperfections are found repair or replace immediately.

Proceed with Caution Dash gauges get dirty too. But you have to be careful not to scratch them. Use a soft, damp cloth to rid the plastic of dust and debris. Too much pressure will leave scratches, so caution is necessary.

Clean the Mats A buildup of dirt can eventually grind holes into floor mats. When washing the car, remove the mats, vacuum, and then take the hose to them. The stream of water will help to dislodge stubborn dirt. For built-in stains use a foam carpet cleaner. Allow the mats to dry before placing them back in the car.

The Extras A Dead Battery is No Fun Treat your battery right and you won’t be stranded in the driveway on a cold morning. It starts by keeping your battery clean. Also clean the battery posts and terminals with a brass wire battery brush and a solution consisting of a few tablespoons of baking soda and a little water. Loosen and remove the negative cable (black) first followed by the positive (red) cable. After everything is clean, inspect the battery for damage — cracks and bulges. One you have the all clear, reinstall the cables, positive first, and use a thin coating of grease to coat the clamps and terminals to avoid new corrosion. And remember, some batteries require water. If the battery has vent caps, remove them to check the level of electrolyte. Proper level should rise one-half inch above the battery’s plates. If it’s low, use distilled water to raise the level to one-fourth or three-eighths of an inch below the bottom of the vent camp. Don’t use tap water due to minerals that could damage the battery.

But It’s Forty Degrees Outside Run the AC. It’s a good idea to run the AC several times during the winter months to prevent moving parts from seizing up. It also helps keep seals soft and flexible by circulating refrigerant.

But most importantly, make sure they are a respected insurer that will handle any accident that comes your way. Look for an insurance agency that will pay for OEM parts and guarantee repairs it authorizes.

It’s Cool, Man Ever witnesses a car overheating on the side of the road? Don’t let it be you. Monitoring your cooling system will save you headaches. Check your car’s anti-freeze level weekly by peeking at the overflow tank. If it’s low, fill it to the max line. Use a 50/50 ratio of water and anti-freeze. Most coolant manufacturers have premixed anti-freeze now to save the hassle of measuring.

Don’t use water alone. The coolant protects against freezing and corrosion while the water provides a good heat transfer from the coolant to the radiator.

When it comes to coolants, don’t mix colors. If you start out with a coolant that is green, don’t add a pink formulation to it.

You could end up with thick fluid that doesn’t perform well. Use only the coolant recommended in the car’s owner’s manual.

Every two to five years flush the coolant. Over time it becomes contaminated and degrades. If you don’t flush, it can lead to problems such as radiator damage, clogged heater core, and water pump and thermostat failures.

Keep the Power in Power-Steering Check power-steering fluid once a month when the car is warmed up. If low, fill with the power-steering fluid recommended by the car’s manufacturer. And make an appointment with your mechanic to have the hose and pump inspected for leaks. Failing to maintain a proper level of fluid will damage the power-steering pump.

Which Gas to Choose?

Octane ratings of gas let you know how much fuel can be compressed before igniting. When gas ignites by compression rather than the spark from a spark plug it creates knocking in the engine. The knocking can damage an engine. Engines have a compression ratio which determines the octane rating of gas you must use in your car. Regular “87” can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.

Ding Dong! The Battery is Dead It happens.You accidentally leave the interior light on overnight and your battery is zapped of life.

Here is the proper way to save the battery and the starter when you get a jump start.

Batteries can explode. Be safe. With both cars off, connect the positive cable end to the positive terminal on the dead battery. Then connect the other positive end to the positive terminal of the source battery.

Connect the negative cable end to the negative terminal of the battery source. Connect the other end of the negative cable to unpainted metal on the car engine. Far away from the dead battery.

Wait a few minutes and try to start the car with the dead battery. If it fails to start, start the car with the source battery and then try to start the car with the dead battery again.

If the car starts disconnect the cables in reverse order. If the car still doesn’t start take the battery to an automotive shop to see if it can recharged.

Repeated attempts to charge a dead battery can damage a car’s starter.

Too Many Keys?

A heavy keychain can add stress to the ignition. Constant jarring while driving combined with the weight can cause wear on the tumblers in the ignition and lead to ignition failure. It’s a good idea to buy a keychain that allows you to separate keys.

It’s best to drive with no dangling keys.

If the key sticks when you start the car, it could be a sign of impending ignition failure. Get it checked out.

Buy Reputable Gas Make sure you buy from stations that filter at the pump. And ask about the

policy of changing filters regularly. Some stations don’t filter at the pump and there is a good chance you will leave with “dirty gasoline.” Watch out for stations that don’t mix alcohol and fuel properly. Find a good station and stick with it, even if it’s a few cents higher.

If you see a tanker truck, get gas another day. When the underground tanks are being filled the turbulence can shake up sediment which can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors.

Log it Keep an auto log to record your mileage and gas fill-ups. A change in gas mileage can signal a problem.

A little love and attention goes a long way. Treat your car right and it will get you to where you want to go for many years to come. SM

Chicken Tortilla Soup ingredients 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes 1 (10.5 oz.) can condensed chicken broth 1 ¼ cups water 1 cup whole corn kernels, cooked 1 cup white hominy 1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chile peppers 1 (15 oz.) can black beans, rinsed & drained ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 boneless chicken breast halves, cooked and cut into bite-sized pieces

directions 1. In a medium stock pot, heat oil over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic in oil until soft. Stir in chili powder, oregano, tomatoes, broth, and water. Bring to a boil, and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.

2. Stir in corn, hominy, chilies, beans, cilantro, and chicken. Simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Ladle soup into individual serving bowls, and top with crushed tortilla chips, avocado slices, cheese, and chopped green onion.

Dave: Humans are instinctively resourceful and terrific troubleshooters! When problems arise, we rarely give up without a fight. Our first instinct is to tackle the problem. If there is something we truly want to accomplish we do everything we can to get it. If you want a person in your life you fight for that person and win them over. If you want to fit into a dress for that wedding then you do everything it takes to temporarily slim down. If you want to buy a car then you will go find the money or borrow it to get that car. When we want something bad enough we get it… period. So, why is it that having good health, which takes only a few hours each week, seems like such an absurd possibility to most of Americans?

I had a client, who is a preacher, tell me if someone was going to give him $250,000 to lose enormous amounts of body fat, he would do it (referring to The Biggest Loser TV program/contest). I ,then, said, “So is your life, your family, your congregation, your friends, not worth losing the weight?”

People, it’s time to begin a healthy lifestyle for yourselves, not for anyone else. When we are healthier, we are more productive, efficient, and motivated to help others.

Sure, we should get healthy so we can be around for our family and friends for years to come, but listen…WE are worth it…YOU are worth it, so get healthy for YOU!

Suzanne: Recently, the days are beginning with warmer breezes and a sweet smell in the air.

A jacket is out of the question as my kids step outside to catch the bus, (Shoshana skipping her way down the driveway). Jackets and boots are being replaced by t-shirts, sleeveless tops, flip flops and blinged-out sandals.

Change is occurring and spring is in the air….or is that pollen?

When my children were all much younger their dad wanted them to grow up with the experience of being in his office and working with him. He had the idea that he would take them all with him on the same day to “help out.” At the time, Shoshana wasn’t here yet to make us laugh, and Gabby was only a year old, so she got the day off. But the other four kids, ranging in age from two to ten, went out the door dressed in “office attire” and looking quite professional and adorable. (Especially Courtland’s tiny necktie and khaki pants). They had been gone about two hours when I saw Marlena walking with purpose up the sidewalk towards the front door. I stepped outside to meet her, “Hey girl, how is it going?”

“I quit,” she said. Her dad was close behind and quickly added, “She didn’t quit, I fired her”. Apparently she didn’t appreciate the job she had been given and decided

working wasn’t for her. Thankfully, Marlena’s attitude toward work has changed since then and it is evidenced by her life and opportunities she goes after. The others worked all that day and came home tired, neckties in hand and shoes off, but feeling grown-up and important.

The difference was in their attitude and how they accepted the responsibilities they were given.

If the cold weather has had you hibernating, and your attitude needs a fresh awakening, now is a good time.

Look past the hay fever and catch spring fever. Focus on flowers blooming and warm air, not the sneezing. Focus on prom dresses, prom dates, and the pictures that will have you laughing and crying in ten years, not the cost of the gown. Focus on recital performances and excited little dancers, not the stress of the red lipstick on the costume or the hole in the tights at the last minute.

Attitudes, unlike hay fever, are contagious, so let yours become a pleasing epidemic. People won’t forget it.

As the season changes let your attitude change with it, and let it be as evident as the pollen that covers my car.

The month of May brings thoughts of Mother’s Day. The very word “mother” brings to mind

safety, warmth, care, and love. There are bad mothers, to be sure, but the vast majority offer unconditional love. In fact, all nature values mothers. There is a reason our planet is called Mother Earth.

Mother chickens are so solicitous of their chicks that we even have coined a phrase to describe nurturing actions – mother hens. Their chicks recognize their mothers because of the clucking noises that the mothers make while laying on eggs. The mother hens, then, can call their babies to them when it begins to rain or when danger is noticed, and the chicks are gathered under the mother’s wings. What a beautiful picture of nurturing motherhood.

People know to exercise caution approaching a mother animal that has her babies with her. Even some very trusting dogs and cats become nervous when a human picks up their young.

In the wild, most fights with a female are caused by a protective mother.

Wild animal poachers and collectors know that in order to capture a baby or a young animal, the mother first has to be killed.

At the shelter, we dread the times when obviously-nursing dogs and cats are brought in as strays without their babies. If we know where the animal came from, we go and attempt to find the babies. Many times, we have put a mother dog on a leash, and she has led us to her puppies so we can rescue them.

Puppies and kittens adjust easily and quickly to shelter life if they come in with their mother. As long as they have her, all is right with their world.

The shelter inspector who visits twice a year told me she gave up dairy products years ago while working for a huge dairy farm. The calves are taken from their mothers right after birth and are placed in barns to be fed by humans or machines. The mother cows become very agitated when they hear the cries of their calves.

How grateful the earth and its creatures should be for the institution of motherhood. I know I am grateful for my mother, and for my sister who is the mother of seven children, and now for her children who have become wonderful mothers. SM

Connecting with Life at

This is the fourth article in a series of stories explaining the mission and activities at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville.

When we’re waiting in the store checkout line, we might be mulling over two options of how we’ll pay for our purchases: plastic or cash. Soon we may have a third: plastic cash. Currency made of plastic is already circulating in countries such as Australia and Canada.

It’s more durable and harder to counterfeit than traditional paper bills, and it points out the pervasive presence of plastics in our lives. Paul Benenati works with a number of different types of polymers and rubber in the Polymers and Composites Center at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, concentrating on those that are biorenewable. Traditional polymers use petroleum as their basis, while biorenewable polymers are derived from grasses, woody biomass or other organic materials that can be planted and harvested again and again.

Benenati says the big development in polymers will be continued momentum toward higher levels of biodegradability, so that the drink bottle you just finished will be even more “green” than it is now.

He advises young people with an interest in polymer science to start with basic chemistry and physics.

Benenati was raised in Syracuse, NY and graduated from the University of Michigan. It was in Michigan where he met his wife and they are living in Danville. He enjoys travel, skiing, reading and current events.

According to a recent study by Transparency Market Research, the global market for synthetic and bio-based biodegradable plastics was worth $2.3 billion in 2011, and is expected to more than triple by 2018.

“There are all kinds of applications,” Benenati says when discussing bio-polymers, “money, ID cards, credit cards, passports, pharmaceuticals and all sorts of packaging.”

Benenati is setting up and calibrating molding and production equipment at the Institute that will be used for processing biopolymers. The Institute combines this technology with analytical and measurement instruments to help clients determine whether biopolymers can stand up to heat, cold, stretching, twisting and several other characteristics, and then can help them produce a prototype.

Benenati worked for more than twenty years at PPG Industries, a Pittsburgh-based multinational firm with $15 billion in sales in paints, chemicals, optical lenses and several types of glass and fiber glass. While working at a PPG facility in Ohio he was involved primarily with synthetic polymer film. As a result of his work and research, he has twenty patents or published patent applications related to polymers and plastics. He sees the change in the plastics industry as a gradual evolution. “Right now, we’re in a middle ground where organic biorenewable polymers are combining with and reinforcing traditional polymers.”

The discoveries of illnesses hold interesting stories in the annals of medicine. In 1965, English physician, Dr. Harry Angelman wrote his chapter when he studied three children who exhibited absent speech, stiff, jerky gait, excessive laughter, and seizures.

The symptoms were part of a condition that was extremely rare at the time —so rare that some physicians doubted its existence. But the symptoms were real and today the condition is known as Angelman syndrome.

With regards to the discovery Dr. Angelman, who passed away in 1996, credited it to pure chance.

He said, “Three children were admitted at various times to my children’s ward in England. They had a variety of disabilities and although, at first sight, they seemed to be suffering from different conditions, I felt that there was a common cause for their illness.” The diagnosis was of a clinical nature, Angelman did not have scientific proof to validate the claim they suffered from the same handicap. This led to reluctance to write about his assumptions in medical journals. That changed while Angelman was on vacation in Italy. He said, “I happened to see a painting in the Castelvecchio museum in Verona called A Boy with a Puppet. The boy’s laughing face and the fact that my patients exhibited jerky movements gave me the idea of writing an article about the children with the title ‘Puppet Children.’

It was not a name that pleased all parents, but it served as a means of combining the three little patients into a single group. Later the name was changed to Angelman syndrome. “ The first reports of Angelman syndrome in North American appeared in the early 1980s.

What is Angelman Syndrome (AS)?

Angelman syndrome is a complicated genetic disorder that causes developmental disabilities.

Primarily affecting the nervous system, Angelman syndrome can lead to speech problems, balance and walking difficulties, and in some cases, seizures.

Often times misdiagnosed as Cerebral Palsy or Autism, Angelman syndrome is an example of genomic imprinting which is caused by disruption to the maternally-inherited chromosome, known as UbE3A, while the paternal copy, which may be of normal sequence, is imprinted and silenced.

Angelman syndrome is usually detected in babies, six- to twelve-months-old, when parents notice developmental delays in the child’s growth. Other common symptoms usually appear in early childhood with recurrent seizures beginning when a child is between two- and three-years-old.

Children diagnosed with Angelman syndrome tend to display a happy, excitable demeanor with frequent smiling, laughter, and hand-flapping movements.

Common characteristics include hyperactivity, a short attention span, and a fascination with water.

Sleep disorders are also common. Other features can include unusually fair skin with light-colored hair and scoliosis.

As they age, people with Angelman Syndrome become less excitable and the sleeping disorders tend to improve. Intellectual disabilities, severe speech impairment, and seizures persist, making life-long care a requirement.

Treatment Angelman Syndrome only affects 1 in 12,000 to 20,000 people. The rarity categorizes Angelman syndrome as an orphan disease which limits funding.

But through help from The Angelman Syndrome Foundation, studies have given hope that AS can be a treatable disease. The Foundation hosts annual walks worldwide that help to fund research.

Treatment for Angelman syndrome may involve the following: • • • •

Anti-seizure medication to control seizures caused by AS. Physical therapy helps children overcome movement disorders.

Communication therapy aids in the progression verbal and non-verbal language skills.

Behavior therapy helps to overcome hyperactivity and a short attention span.

How You Can Get Involved The Angelman Syndrome Foundation will hold its annual walk on May 18, 2013 in over 30 different sites across the United States. A local walk will be held in Danville at Anglers Park to raise money for research and awareness.

Heather wanted Kendal tested immediately. She says, “Initially, they wouldn’t test her because they didn’t think Kendal was severe enough to have AS.” When the doctors agreed to test Kendal, her results came back negative. But a more inclusive test showed a small deletion on Kendal’s maternal 15th chromosome. Heather says, “Getting a life-altering diagnosis such as Angelman syndrome was, in a way, a little bit of relief after two years of wondering and waiting. There was a mourning period, but Kendal was still the same little girl who melted our hearts with her sweet little smile.”

An Angel Among Us: Meet Kendal Daniel Kendal was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at two years of age. She is now five and enrolled in preschool where she learns typical preschool activities, but Kendal also receives occupational, physical, and speech therapies. Heather Daniel, Kendal’s mother, says, “We try to maintain a routine with Kendal because it makes it much easier on her and us.

She basically gets up at the same time every day and goes to bed at the same time every night.

We try to keep meals the same as well.”

Kendal isn’t able to use utensils fully, so she requires assistance at meal times.

Children diagnosed with Angelman syndrome have speech difficulties, but large hearts. Heather says, “These children are very social and love making friends, but the lack of speech makes it hard for other people to accept them sometimes.

As a parent, that’s the hard part because I see Kendal wanting to make friends. As she gets older I see it getting harder and that hurts me.” Even though speech is demanding, children with Angelman’s still have plenty to say. For Kendal sign language is difficult because of a fine motor delay.

School is another bright spot for Kendal.

Heather says, “Kendal loves school. She loves being around people. All the little kids throughout her school know her and say, ‘Hey Kendal’ whenever we go in. Sometimes I think she knows more people than I do.

We can be out in public and I will hear a little kid say hey to Kendal. To me, it’s so sweet to see how accepting young children can be.”

Heather has high hopes and dreams for Kendal. She says, “I hope that Kendal can live life to the fullest, be happy, and never know pain or hurt. The same things I want for Trace. In a perfect world I hope we can cure Angelman syndrome someday. But if that’s not in God’s plan then I accept it. I would love for there to be more acceptance and understanding for special needs families and their kids. Special needs children and adults are no different than most other people, they just want to be loved and accepted.”

Month to month, you will find Misty stating the outrageous or ridiculous truths in her day-to-day life, and you will realize that you are not alone in this maniacal concept known as parenting. Yes, welcome to 5150 Lunatic Lane- Where skills and tactics are tried, tested, and often fail. But she keeps doing it anyway!

Misty’s children Jason- 20, Corey-13, Spencer-11, Tucker-10, and Kendall-9 know all too well the joy and sorrow of being a big family. And new husband Scott is still waiting for the punch line.

Clean shirts are hung on color-coded hangers. Corey has white hangers. Spencer has blue. Tucker has red. And Kendall has silver.

What does the word simple mean? Let’s define it. I like dictionary. com because it’s simple. “Easy to understand, deal with, use, etc.”, pretty reasonable, right?

Wouldn’t most people love to have a life full of easy to understand situations, easy to deal with people, and easy to use instructions for everything and everyone that are NOT simple?

Ah, what a perfect world it would be if everyone had simple in mind with their action, and words. When I look at the thesaurus — again from dictionary.com — the very first synonym I see is “child’s play.” The first antonym is “complex.” I don’t know about you but “simplicity” sounds much more inviting than “complexity.” I think I’m hopping on the next train into Simple Town.

I’ve already made my life easy by changing certain ways our household operates. Here are a few things I’ve done to make things run more smoothly: Each child has a bin in the washroom for all clean laundry except shirts. This bin is also handy for two level homes.

Everyone hates going upstairs to put toys and things away after they’ve used them so the children put their stuff in the bins as well, it keeps things from lying around the house or on the stairs waiting to be carried up.

Jackets go in a collective bin in the hall closet.

Sports equipment such as cleats, shin guards, etc. go in a sealed bin outside on the back porch. NO cleats allowed in the house!

Dinnertime is always at 5:45 pm, unless of course there’s soccer practice. Then dinner is prepared and eaten earlier, followed by a snack before bedtime.

Each child has chores they do weekly. The duties never change. The same child has the same list of tasks week after week. Chore lists are posted and hung in the washroom for all to see. And since it never changes, they know what to except and know what the next day will bring. They even trade off chores with each other sometimes.

And let’s not forget the to-do lists. I love lists. I’ve said it a thousand times. Making lists not only makes life simple, it keeps you in check. Days are so short, and with so many things to do, in any given day, to-do lists will ensure you stay on track and don’t forget anything. Ahh— simplicity at its best!

There are countless other rules and routines I have in place to make things easier, but you

get the idea. The benefits of being simple are far too great to even realize sometimes.

Simple has always been my goal, but I may not have always carried it out. It’s easy to look around and find ourselves in a whirlwind of chaos surrounding dinnertime, laundry, room cleaning, etc. In fact, the children seem to be in their own sea of complexity with their bedrooms right now. A few of the bedrooms look like a tornado touched down, ruining everything in its path. After the kids clean their rooms, they still aren’t clean.

So I’ve decided to simplify it a bit for them. I’m going to get a box for each child’s things, strip EVERYTHING from the room, and have them make piles.

Keep pile, trash pile, donate pile. It’s easy to get wrapped up in life’s “things,” then look around and see that you are standing in the middle of your own mess. I get that, and they are about to learn a lesson in simplicity of their own.

In the future, I plan to simplify even more. I don’t know how, but there’s always room for improvement. Until this ship runs itself, I’ll keep finding ways to make everyone’s life easier!

This month Corey turns 13. My sweet, baby-faced boy will be a teenager.

Yikes. During Corey’s life so far, I’ve learned not to underestimate the power and knowledge of a child. He’s witty, handsome, reserved, charming, bashful, and intelligent.The last 13 years of my life have undoubtedly been full, and Corey has made it a unique challenge with his young insight on the world, and a blessing with his presence.
