Does perfection exist? It’s a question I never really thought about until I read Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus & Sharpen Your Creative Mind. There is a section in the book written by Elizabeth Grace Saunders called “Letting Go of Perfection.” I read these books in hopes of discovering ways to help me become more productive. For the most part, I walk away from them feeling it was just another way to stifle my productivity. But the piece Saunders wrote was an aha moment for me. She describes creative people as basically two types—The Creative Perfectionist and The Creative Pragmatist. Without knowing it, the quest for perfection has derailed me for years.

Looking back, I’ve wavered on everything I’ve done creatively. I’ve been proud of projects, but there was always doubt—is it good enough or can I make it better? The Saunders piece taught me two things—one, I am a perfectionist and two, true perfection does not exist.

Football enthusiasts will argue that the ‘72 Miami Dolphins were perfect. In many ways, it’s hard to debate that, but dig into the stats and you’ll find the Dolphins ranked 24th out of 26 teams in kick and punt returns. The Dolphins were far from perfect in special teams.

Perfection does not exist. Trying to make something perfect is futile, make it the best you can, and be proud of it. In Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy wrote, “If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.”

Salvador Dali felt the same way. He said, “Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it.”

Here is what I know about Valentine’s Day... nothing!

restaurant. As I stated before a man does the best he can with all the tools he has...knife excluded of course.

I went to a nice steakhouse and bought a premium prime rib for me and a delectable grilled salmon for you because I knew it was your favorite. I brought dinner home so we could have a cozy, romantic dinner... just the two of us. So far, so good. I put the dog in her room, unplugged the television set, and hid your cell phone, so we could just focus on each other and the special day of hearts.

SHE SAID...

Well, you had the dining room table officially decorated for our next large soiree, so I knew we would have to eat at the micro-miniature breakfast table in the kitchen. No candlelight, no ambiance, and biggest problem of all, no room.

I took the food out of the Styrofoam plates (that you dislike so much) and put it on real plates. I threw away the plastic utensils and put out the silverware. I even threw out the cheap restaurant napkins and put out the expensive company-coming-to-town napkins. We ate, and so far, so good turned to you-are-doing-that-allwrong-song and dance.

First of all, let me set the stage. We had been out of town, and it took both of us to unpack the car after I had driven the whole trip. I unpacked the suitcases, started the washing machine, made a grocery list before shopping, picked Sophie up from the kennel, and quite frankly, dinner wasn’t on my list of priorities. But I have to hand it to you (no pun intended) I did enjoy my salmon. I guess I was so tired that the visual of you stabbing lettuce like it was your worst enemy made me laugh. But, I had vacuumed the floor, and I could just see your whole plate crashing under the pressure. You would have lost your dinner, and I would have had yet another mess to clean up. And stop whining about the knife. It didn’t even come close to your foot, but it did almost hit Sophie. I would have really felt badly about that. She’s my baby.

I didn’t quite understand what she meant, so as she showed me, she accidently hit my hand and the knife jumped to the floor almost stabbing my foot. I knocked my steak on the floor while trying to keep the knife from piercing me.

Now let’s broach the subject of the dining room table. I do like to keep at least ONE room presentable, and that room happens to be the only one that doesn’t collect “things” hanging on all the chairs...probably because I keep the chairs pushed under the table so they don’t tempt you. For some reason, if you see an empty chair anywhere in the house, you feel obligated to throw a coat, briefcase, book, or something else on it. If I want to sit down, I have to clean off your belongings first. Yes, the kitchen table is small, but then so is the kitchen. I’ll be glad when it grows up to be a normal size.

Then, we discussed the situation and laughed about the sequence of events. We decided the next romantic dinner would be at a romantic

The world wasn’t formed in a day, and neither were we. Set small goals and build upon them.” Understanding a goal is the most important key to success. With all the New Year’s buzz over, some people are falling back into old routines. Frustration is a common emotion that derails goals.

Setting unrealistic goals makes them nearly impossible to attain. We like to see results and we are impatient. You may ask yourself, “Why did I spend all week working out and eating healthy. I look no different?”

The question you should ask yourself is, “How do I feel?” If you’re followed a healthy path you will better. Sure, you may be sore, but that’s a good thing. The goal you pictured when you decided to get healthy takes time. Don’t give up.

I think it’s fantastic that people want to get on track and course correct their health, but I often find that many people who wait until the new year are not as serious about their health as they should be. Being healthy is a goal that should be a top priority year-round and every day. Never wait until specific day or time of the year to get healthy and feel better about yourself. That time is now.

If you’re frustrated with a goal you set, reevaluate it. Maybe the answer is to set smaller goals. It’s perfectly OK to restructure.

It does not mean you’ve failed. It means you’re determined to succeed. Hitting smaller accomplishments that lead to the big prize makes you feel good.

It gives you a sense of moving forward.

A plan of action and the resolve to never give up is the recipe to reaching your goal.

Modifying goals is OK. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Failing or getting burned out is OK. Shake it off, and get right back on track.

Don’t focus on the setback. It’s a given that there will be hiccups and obstacles along the way. Prepare for them so it has less of an effect on you. Reach out to friends and family to help you stay on track. This will strengthen accountability. Giving up when no one is watching is much easier than if you have an audience.

Life is full of choices. We have the power to make the right or wrong decisions. We can choose to take action and persistently follow through until we reach our desired results or we can give up. It’s your choice to press on and never give up. The power of free will is yours, use it to your advantage or disadvantage.

If you want it bad enough you always find a way to make it happen.

Stay with your plan of action and do whatever it takes to get to where you want to be. Choose to succeed, follow through, and never give up!

A Perspective on Public Schools – What we are doing to improve teaching and learning in Danville Public Schools

by Stan Jones, Superintendent of Danville Public Schools The Honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Using this sentiment as a backdrop, it is my intent as superintendent of schools to never be silent about the value of a public education. Over the past six months, I have spent a considerable amount of time in our schools and classrooms. I met with hundreds of citizens, parents, businesses, civic leaders, and school staff. I have deliberately engaged in activities designed to help me gain as much insight as possible on the state of Danville Public Schools.

Like any organization, Danville Public Schools has both strengths and challenges with strengths far exceeding challenges. Our strengths include: dedicated, loyal, experienced, and caring staff; a strong commitment from the community; solid fiscal support; reasonable student-teacher ratios (with some exceptions); significant leadership potential among our staff and students; compelling opportunities to improve learning and teacher effectiveness; strong governance; and, a community who collectively value public education.

Our challenges are: systemic, strategic, and sustained professional learning for all staff aimed at improving student learning; sustained and focused leadership development aimed at improving student achievement; investment in relationships among staff; system-wide academic performance as measured by accreditation results; limited breadth and depth of rigorous program opportunities i.e., dual enrollment, advanced placement, and career and technical education programs; and, the extent to which instructional practices are aligned, deployed, and conveyed consistently across schools and classrooms.

In summary, we have engaged in the process of carefully examining what we teach, how we teach, and how we build a positive school climate to ensure that our schools radically improve. We are transforming our schools strategically, steadily, and deliberately toward more rigorous and relevant learning.

A STRONG EDUCATION BUILDS A STRONGER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Given these observations, we (DPS staff) have worked carefully with the support of the School Board to develop a comprehensive, research and evidence based instructional framework which includes: on–going professional development for all staff; utilizing effective instructional strategies; increasing a focus on writing, and using problem based learning as a tool for increasing students critical thinking skills. These changes are designed to enable teachers to extend students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills toward more meaningful, facilitative, and relevant learning. Put simply – there is an emphasis on teaching students to think and problem solve.

In addition, we have deployed a number of initiatives aimed at improving learning for all Danville Public School students. These initiatives may be too complex to explain but are worth mentioning. The initiatives include: utilizing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for establishing consistent expectation for student behavior and adult responses across all schools; using Odessyware – a digital curriculum and content tool that enables teachers to customize courses for students; hiring two instructional coaches to assist teachers in improving reading instruction in elementary schools and enhancing math instruction at middle and high school levels; using measures of academic progress (MAP) as a diagnostic assessment tool for monitoring each student’s academic progress in reading and mathematics for grades K – 8; and; utilizing an academic review (AARPE) process to improve instructional planning and practices by strengthening the alignment between the Performance

Once marriage was simple, or so we thought.

You got married, had children, worked the land and stayed married no matter what. The concept of a “happy marriage” was no more relevant than a “pretty tractor.”

That has changed over time as marriage partners have become more independent.

Couples don’t need each other for quite as many things as they once did. In many marriages both partners work and can afford to live, more or less independently.

: Don’t set out to change your significant other. Studies have shown that you will fail if you try to change your partner’s basic personality. Rather, focus on using good communication skills by asking for changes in behavior in a loving and respectful manner. Couples who are very different often find those differences a source of

attraction at first but later may want to

change their partner into someone more

like themselves. Couples who are more alike often find those similarities attractive,

HAPPY, HEALTHY This doesn’t mean that modern marriages are necessarily happy marriages as the divorce rate still hovers around 50 percent. Children who grow up with divorced parents may have no adequate models for what makes a marriage happy and healthy. Most experts say that whether a couple will stay together or not is often mediated by several key factors/ skills: commitment, communication, conflict, and caring behaviors.

Given the importance of being competent in those basic areas, here are 10 different key elements to help you achieve and keep a happy and healthy marriage. : Practice mutual support and respect. This doesn’t mean that you always agree, but it does mean that you have admiration for each other and a steady undercurrent of love. You don’t take each other for granted, and you don’t make derogatory comments about each other to co-workers or friends. You face difficulties together and “have each other’s back.” : Be realistic. Relationships, just like individuals, change over time. The early passion and sense of infatuation you feel might fade but with time and effort you can build a deeper, more meaningful and satisfying relationship.

What is most important is the work you do together to build a satisfying relationship as you learn to accept, and then celebrate your similarities and differences. : Learn and practice good communication skills—both talking and listening. Ask what you can do for each other.

Demonstrate how much you love one another by learning each other’s love language and expressing your love in the way it counts most to your partner. If you partner values quality time find a way to be together uninterrupted. If your partner values physical touch make the effort to give hugs and strokes. : Build friendship and trust and practice honesty. Couples who are friends are happier and more likely to stick together through difficult times. Develop your own “couple game plan” and “playbook” of how you want your relationship to be and how you will get there. Agree on what it should look like and find ways to make that happen.

: Commit to investing time, energy, and effort into your relationship.

Couples in long term happy marriages have experienced both good and bad times, but they celebrate their successes together and learn from their mistakes. If this seems like hard work begin by focusing on special positive moments you have shared together and increase your motivation to move beyond current problems. : Learn to resolve conflict in a healthy manner. Conflict is inevitable in a close intimate relationship. Promise to “act on the pinch” and ask for changes in behavior as soon as you recognize an issue. Ask your partner for help. They are likely to be less emotionally involved at the time.

Promise that neither of you will attack, flee, or shut down when conflicted or angry. Set a time to discuss the issue without blaming, and use “I” messages to explain how you are feeling and what you would like to be done

differently. Make sure that you both are clear about what is being said by repeating what your partner said and asking for confirmation. Brain storm possible solutions and commit to trying one and then evaluating the results.

Conflict is often said to be the cutting edge of a relationship and can be creatively used to deepen intimacy and marital satisfaction. Focus on only one problem at a time and celebrate your progress. : Be generous with one another and encourage and ask for forgiveness.

Holding grudges and refusing to let go of past hurts will overwhelm you and make your relationship feel hopeless.

Use healthy communication skills and talk with your partner about past hurts that still are unresolved. Look for each of your roles in past hurtful situations. Learn from your mistakes and commit to working together to find ways to forgive and support each other. Being honest, kind, loving, and compassionate will take you a long way toward letting go of past hurts. : Expect your relationship to change just as you do. While there may be less passion and infatuation than in your early years, there may be more trust and security and satisfaction.

Studies indicate that long-term happily married couples report a more satisfying physical and emotional relationship with each other. Spend quality time together, hold hands, laugh, and have fun. : Know when to ask for help. We aren’t born with the knowledge and skills for developing a healthy relationship, nor is there a place to reliably learn them. Find an experienced relationship coach or counselor who can be objective and is skilled in dealing with relationship issues to mediate or facilitate discussion and learning.

Healthy and happy marriages promote healthy and happy families which in turn foster healthy communities and facilitate the movement toward world peace. It’s not a small deal!

One of the fastest growing industries in America today is podcasts. In 2006, 11percent of Americans aged 12 or over had listened to a podcast. By 2015, that number had tripled, according to Edison Research and Triton Digital. Despite this, the Danville region had never had its own podcast network. Until now.

Zack Jones and Eric Mills are two millennials with big dreams and strong ambitions. Zack, who has a background in tiny house designs, started a company called Project Wosho in 2010. Eric’s background is in marketing and sales. The two went to school together and reconnected after several years in 2015. They both shared a love for listening to podcasts and after some time, asked themselves, “Why not start our own?”

“There was a lot of debate over what our subject matter would be,” says Mills. “Tiny homes, hodgepodge, politics, and a plethora of others that just didn’t really light our fire.”

Then, one day it occurred to them that their podcast should be about the city they both love — Danville. And thus, River District Listener was born.

RDL, as it’s commonly referred to, is one of the only locally- based podcasts in the world. It’s a Danville-focused podcast, run by Danville residents and sponsored by Danville businesses. On their show, Mills and Jones encourage listeners to see what’s possible in Danville. On one of their episodes, they

stated, “The grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s greener where you water it.”

After spending some time in Asheville, NC, Jones realized the creative environment he desired was already available to him. “I craved a place where I could be heard and where I could actually make a difference,” Jones states. “I moved back to Danville only to find the clean slate sort of experience I was looking for was my hometown all along.” And so today, Jones and Mills are forging ahead with a fun, weekly program that is released every Monday morning. The pair said they can see positive momentum happening in Danville and join in the change. “I want to be a part of that revolution, and that’s why Danville is where I call home,” remarks Mills.

Change is never easy, nor fast. RDL, however, believes it can play a vital role in Danville’s transformation. “We want to be the voice for the revitalization of Danville,” says Mills.

“We want to inform, educate, and inspire, but above all else we want to connect. We want to connect with the people who are passionate about the City’s future and act as a meeting place for all of the people who are committed to playing a part in the new Danville.” Indeed, thanks to people like Zack Jones and Eric Mills, Danville’s future is bright.

In 1986, health problems began to plague Cathy Fowler. “I watched several family members suffer with chronic illnesses that were not being helped by traditional medical practices,” Fowler says. She became interested in holistic health after her mother’s passing in 1998. After receiving certifications in the herbal field, Cathy began to transform her life. She chose to share her experiences with the world and opened Nature’s Essentials in 1999. “Since that time, I have helped

thousands of people who are seeking natural alternatives. It has always been my mentality that every health issue has a root that could be emotional, physical, or spiritual. If you can help someone find the root in all those areas, then the body can heal,” Fowler adds.

Fowler was born in Danville and has lived in the city most her life. She says, “I was raised to work hard, appreciate everything, treat others as you would want to be treated, and love everyone.

Many people work so hard and really have not had the time to educate themselves on how to take care of their bodies.” Fowler’s passion for educating and bringing change to the community led to her opening Nature’s Essentials in Danville. “I love the people in this city and felt this community was the best fit for my business,” Fowler continues.

Doss adds, “I’m obsessed with Miranda Lambert. And who doesn’t love Adele?”

Megan Doss is 29 years old. She’s from Caswell County, North Carolina. And she sings for a living . Megan’s band, The Megan Doss Band celebrated its one-year anniversary in December. The five-piece group includes Matt Crowder on lead guitar and vocals, Josh Moss on bass, Jessie Finney on drums, and Kevin Brown on keyboards in vocals. Doss says, “We cover everything from new to old country, top 40 pop hits, and classics from all genres.”

From early on, Doss knew she was destined to be a performer. One of her childhood memories is placing her stuff animals in a line like an audience and singing hits from Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, and Trish Yearwood to them. “It took me a long time to work up the courage to sing in front of people. But when I finally did, I just knew it was what I was supposed to do,” Doss says.

Doss honed her skills singing along with the radio, CMT, and whatever cassette tapes she had. Cassette tapes? Remember those?

The music landscape is constantly changing. When asked about the current state of music, Doss says, “As far as country music, I’m a little sad at how far from the traditional sound it has gotten.

I’m not into the ‘Bro Country’ movement at all. Unfortunately, I think it’s become more about a look, and what’s selling as opposed to what sounds good.” Doss is quick to add that’s just her opinion. “At the end of the day, I respect anyone who can stand in front of a crowd and put their art out there. It’s way easier to be on the judging side.”

The Megan Doss Band has big plans for 2016. While she hasn’t recorded any original material, but plans are in the works. Doss says, “We wanted to spend a full year together to get our show tight and ready.” You can catch Doss and Crowder play an acoustic set every Thursday night from 7 to 10pm at Frank’s Italian Restaurant and one Tuesday every four weeks at Buffalo Wild Wings from 7 to11pm. Have you ever spent time daydreaming while staring a church window? In the dark there is no magic, but light gives it a theme and evokes an image remembered or imagined.

For each church window, stained glass panel, or mosaic that you see around the community, there is an artist behind it.

A number of gifted glass artists reside in Southern and Southwestern Virginia. Each one is inspired by the magic of glass that demands light and gives color and form to the artists’ imaginations.

The artists featured in this article range in age from their forties to eighties and come from varied background of experience and 24 SHOWCASE Magazine

education. They work in many forms of glass art including stained glass, fused glass, mosaics, and dalle de verre. None of the works featured here are from a pattern but are original designs. These artists have presented their work as commissions, in juried shows, and private sales. They also share their passion by teaching classes in their chosen glass form.

A retired chemistry professor, I primarily work with fused glass in my Martinsville studio called Gallery 22. This form of glass art involves heat which melts and changes the shape of the glass. There is the spirit of adventure in this form because every time you open the kiln after a firing, it is a surprise. The excitement of color and light is only enhanced by the endless possibilities of what might come out of the kiln.

I also create dalle de verre works, which is French for “glass slab.” The technique uses pieces of glass set into a supporting material such as concrete or epoxy resin.

Several years ago, I visited the Blenko Glass Company in West Virginia and did a workshop where I learned this form. Dalle de verre is recognizable in many church windows and lends itself to garden decoration. The facets of glass give another way of looking at the piece because of the refraction of light. This particular piece hangs between two 4x4 posts in my garden.

Nancy Clark is a former primary school counselor and nurse. She started out making stained glass as a hobby and then she discovered fusing. Now, she has a studio called First Day Designs located in Studio 107 in Uptown Martinsville. Nancy still works with other forms of glass, but none of the other forms offer the opportunity to observe the properties of glass in the same way as with the effect of heat. Fusing is an expensive way to form glass but all the fusers say the investment is worth the end result.

Nancy’s fused glass piece is done in vibrant blue and turquoise with clear glass in a mosaic-like pattern with lacy edge.

Amanda Honore-Donley of Rose Window in Woolwine has a background in art, but

the art of stained glass picked Amanda when her husband, Larry, signed her up for a class.

She loved the design possibilities, the glowing glass, variety of material, and the steps in the process. She also enjoys the challenge and physicality of working on something both large and detailed.

This is the latest in a series of works for Amanda. It is a joyful combination of textured, beveled, fused and handmade glass incrusted in copper. She uses glass in sea blues and clear because it captures the feeling of jumping into water or watching crashing waves.

of configurations. His piece is created from mixed forms of glass, found metal discs, and traditional stained glass with a heavy accent of blue. Larry works in the Rose Window Studio with his wife Amanda.

Nancy Erikson finds fused glass satisfying because her daily life requires a lot of organization, planning, and structure. In her home studio in Union Hall, all of that goes away by creating pieces with raw materials.

She finds the visual aspect of glass to be serene and calming in a chaotic world. The way light and color play off of each other gives viewers a sense of calm. Her piece resembles coral with different shades of amber and brown to achieve balance of color and space. It is airy, colorful and delicate, much like a coral reef. Nancy learned how to create glass art by taking classes through Patrick Henry Community College.

Chris Frazier of Martinsville started mosaics by accident.

While working with stained glass, he searched for a use for small scraps of glass left from stained glass panels.

his works. In Christian symbolism, the butterfly represents resurrection. The butterfly’s three stages: caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly symbolize the stages of a Christian’s life, death, and resurrection. Chris is an art teacher at Rich Acres and Collinsville Primary and works on glass from his home studio.

Ideas that bind the different artists with their various forms of art are the fascination with glass: its magic, diversity, and challenge.

Most feel reluctant to call themselves “artists” and are constantly in the learning mode.

There is considerable expense involved with some forms, but all agree that even though it took time to accumulate equipment and materials, they would do it all over again.

Working with glass gives pleasure and satisfaction, even when pieces are not sold. However, there is extra reward in the idea of someone else seeing value in their effort.

Even during Leap Year when February has 29 days, it is still the shortest month of the year. Some people (probably most of them women!) love it because of Valentine’s Day that is just about in the middle of the month. It used to be that one billion Valentine’s Day cards were sent worldwide. With e-mails, social media, and e-cards nowadays, I wonder if that number has decreased.

Although the manner of sending messages of love may have changed, some of the lessons of that day remain constant, and many of the lessons come from animals. The biggest lesson would be that we should not have to have a day set apart as the time we let our loved ones know they are our loved ones. Our companion animals let us know how they feel about us every time they wag their tail, follow us throughout the house, or look at us with adoring eyes.

The fortunate humans who have been loved by an animal know that their love is really not based on physical appearance, age, wealth, or status. I have seen pets love people that other people would shun or speak ill of.

We can also learn from animals that true love is not selfish, but is selfless. Of course, we fill our animals’ basic needs, and they appreciate it. Animals, however, do not warn owners of smoke in the house or bark when a stranger approaches because they expect a reward. They give us service out of sheer love.

From witnessing the love that my pets have for each other, and seeing the grief they experience when another pet dies, I know that animals have a gift of love that we humans do not always realize that they have. My dog, Wally, is scared of my cat, Becky.

And yet, when Becky has to have a bath because of skin issues or has to have medicine, Wally whines and is very watchful about what is being done.

I have been blessed to share my life with a variety of companion animals.

Pet ownership is not easy, and really should not be. But, oh, the rewards and life’s lessons learned far outweigh the costs of time, finances, and other resources. SM DANVILLE HUMANE SOCIETY www.showcasemagazine.com
