It happened at the beginning of May 2011. It’s one of those bad memories I wanted to block out, but I didn’t. I needed to remember the pain of the toothache of 2011 because I needed to make sure it never happens again.

It started one night when I was playing basketball. A dull ache with an occasional throbbing.

Imagine the bassline to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” It was methodic, but manageable.

I thought it was my sinuses arguing with allergies. But when I got home after ball, the throbbing turned into an all-out assault.

Think Lars Ulrich’s drumming in Metallica’s “Battery.” There was no relief from the pain.

I learned a valuable lesson that day—DO NOT SKIP DENTAL CHECK-UPS.

He Said...

I am Donald Trump. No, I am not hiding my billions of dollars. I am just saying as a candidate I can identify with the stance he takes, his underdog position, and the establishment not liking him for what he believes.

In the fifth grade, I was the class clown.

Everybody loved me because I made them laugh. Some of my friends thought as a hoot they would put my name up as a candidate to run for the presidency of the school. This was big time in the fifth grade because this meant in the sixth grade you got to lead the whole school in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

I knew I couldn’t win. I suppose the committee, made up of all the smart kids in school, knew I couldn’t win, so they cast me as a nominee.

Ironically, my opponent was the teacher’s pet, and the smartest girl in school, which today would represent Hillary.

Not only was I funny in school, I was also smarter than they gave me credit for, and I chose the smartest guy in school to be my campaign manager. With his help and some fine marketing skills, I won.

Of course the principal and all the teachers were aghast at such shenanigans and called for a recount where I still beat her, hands down.

Later on I was told that I was going to be impeached because I didn’t act sophisticated enough or in today’s vernacular, I wasn’t quite politically correct all the time. More than likely I was never politically correct.

She Said...

Are you telling me that your whole life has been patterned after Donald Trump or that Donald Trump patterned his life after you? Lord, help us all if that is the case. I know you are not passionate politically,

but I do know you are a true American and vote every time they roll out the voting machines.

I am not sure what all of this rant has to do with me personally, or to us as a couple. Now if you are thinking about running for president that changes the whole dynamic of our relationship. I know you are the lone leader of your whole world because I hear you espouse diatribe after diatribe of that about which you know nothing. I also know that you are sensitive and kind, plus in all the years I have known you, you have never told me a lie, so that means you are too honest to be a politician.

I also don’t think you could put up with a house full of Secret Service agents watching your every move.

You are a consummate shopper, and they surely are not going to tag along with you to one of the bigbox stores in town for you to search for treasures.

Now, you’re telling me that you were like Donald Trump...down in the polls, not favored to win, hated by the establishment, and running against the brightest girl in the school. Yet you still managed to win because even though she was bright, she underestimated you and your campaign manager.

Could it have been that this was FIFTH GRADE AND YOU GAVE THE FIRST AND SECOND GRADERS LOLLYPOPS WITH YOUR NAME ON IT????

I can tell you I am not like Hillary and if she loses this race, it won’t be because Trump gave out lollypops. It will probably be because she underestimated the silent voters who don’t speak to polls or voice their opinion in public like you do. Now you have me talking about politics all because you stole the presidency in the fifth grade. You really have me worried though since I overheard you telling someone that this election is so unorthodox, you’ve decided to write your name in for president in November.

Matthew Huckfeldt and his family moved to the Martinsville-Henry County (MHC) area, area, filled with deep roots in the heritage of American textiles and furniture, in 1997. They relocated so that his father could work for one of the textile companies here.

According to Huckfeldt, “Growing up here, I was frustrated by a lack of things to do and always intended to move away after graduating college.

I associated Martinsville with words like boring, unemployment, stale, and outdated.” After Huckfeldt graduated from James Madison University in 2012, he came back to the area but noted that it was a “different Martinsville”. He saw that the community had started to rebound. He pointed out that “people seemed to have gotten tired of saying ‘There’s just nothing to do here’, and decided to MAKE things to do.”

He said, “I had this realization while I was riding my bike through Uptown on a sunny day and actually started to look around at the number of busy stores I had never noticed and the flyers for events that I

had never heard about. It made me think, maybe Martinsville’s size isn’t as much of a drawback as I thought it was.” He added, “MHC has had some hard times, but with a fairly small population, it’s a much more manageable task to turn it around and make it into a great place to live.”

As a student in high school, Huckfeldt had the perception that MHC was for older adults and more of a retirement community. He commented that “since moving back after college, I’ve seen younger generations step up and start making this into the place they want to live. That’s the thing that made me stay. I saw the potential that Martinsville-Henry County has, and realized that since this area is rebuilding, it’s a perfect time to make it whatever we want it to be.”

With that drive and enthusiasm to further enhance his community, Huckfeldt got busy. He began his career in MHC as a part-time server at Mtn’ Jax Restaurant & Pub, where he often used his bicycle to deliver lunch orders to nearby businesses. He also worked part-time for the YMCA’s Bike Barn, a non-profit program that loans bicycles and helmets to residents and visitors on the Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail. Outside of work, he spent time helping to construct a new mountain biking complex in the Horsepasture community called Mountain Laurel Trails.

In 2015, as the popularity of cycling grew locally, Huckfeldt opened Chain of Fools Bicycle Repair on Fayette Street in Uptown Martinsville. Initially, the shop was in a walk-down basement location, but as word spread of the new store for cyclists, Huckfeldt was able to expand into the retail space upstairs and use the basement as has repair space and warehouse.

During this same time, the city of Martinsville was undergoing a gradual transformation through a Community Block Development Grant. Nearby businesses on the street were enhanced with new awnings and fresh paint. Across from Chain of Fools, a small pocket park was developed. On a building wall facing the park, artists Amanda Donnelly and Aleen Wilson painted a mural depicting outdoor recreational opportunities in MHC and the mural featured a prominent cyclist. This choice of mural themes was a coincidence, but very timely for Huckfeldt.

Within a year of being open, his shop was named the number one bicycle shop in Southwestern Virginia by the readers of Virginia Living Magazine. According to Huckfeldt, “Being such a new business, it’s exciting to know that customers are aware of Chain of Fools and are pleased with service enough to vote for me.” He noted that customers have a choice in where to take their bikes for service in the region and that he finds it “flattering for out of town guests to drive 30 minutes to come see me when there are other options out there.” In May 2016, when the business was honored, he commented he hoped his enthusiasm for cycling was contagious.

It apparently was because just months later,

Mountain Laurel Trails was named the #1 Mountain Biking Complex in Virginia by a national website, SingleTracks.com. According to the trail manager, Bob Norris, Mountain Laurel Trails has been visited by guests from all over Virginia, North Carolina and even Florida.

As the tourism economy in Martinsville-Henry County continues to grow and enthusiasm for cycling builds, things are looking up for Huckfeldt. “There has been an emphasis on active lifestyles that I’d like to see continue, not just because it would help my bike shop, but because that’s the place I want to live.”

Even though he owns and operates a business, he is still involved in the community by volunteering occasionally at The Bike Barn, helping promote Mountain Laurel Trails and also serving as a member of the newly founded service organization “Millennials of MHC.” Downtime is important, so when he is not on his bike, volunteering or helping customers at the shop, Huckfeldt enjoys listening to live music. With numerous music venues in the area like the Rives Theatre, Mtn’ Jax and Martinsville Uptown’s TGIF concert series, there are plenty of opportunities for millennials to get out and unwind. Huckfeldt explained that Mtn’ Jax has music 2-3 nights a week, a good beer selection, and fun events like “Trivia Tuesday” which has been a pretty good draw for the millennial crowd.

His wish for the future of Martinsville-Henry County is for someone to open a brewery. He commented, “A pint of freshly brewed craft beer would be an awesome way to end a bike ride!”

Fall race season is here. We took a moment to catch up with Strength Runner founder Dave Gluhareff to ask a few questions on race preparation.

What should your diet consist of while training for a race?

Race training nutrition will depend on what exactly type of shape you are already in. If you are in great shape and lean with little body fat then you can eat more good calories in the form of healthy complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and good fats. If you are struggling with losing weight (body fat) then your race training nutrition will incorporate higher calories from lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and good fats earlier in your day and cut back down to less carbs and fats by evenings and nighttime.

What specific strength exercises and stretches should you concentrate on while preparing for a race?

Runners should always strength train their total body at the minimum 2-3 times per week and should focus a little extra on their low body and low back support. Each body part will need the next day or two to rest fully in order to rebuild and recover. All body parts need strengthening to help one muscle group support the other. There can be more of a focus on muscles like the hips, buns, 16 Showcase Magazine

inner/outer thighs to help support the core especially on trail runs. Having a strong core, from abs, internal/external obliques, and low back will help with stability and strength for runs anywhere. Having a strong upper back and shoulders will help with better posture and take a lot of strain off the low back/ spinal erector muscles while running on flat or hilly terrain. Stretching and flexibility should be done after each strength training warmup, during the strength training workout, and post workout to help create better ranges of motion, improve circulation, and loosen tight muscles.

What’s a good cardio routine to ensure you’re ready for the race?

The routine should be to run 2-3 times each week with each run focusing on varying distances. Run 1 should be short, Run 2 should be medium, and Run 3 should be a long run. These runs should have a day of rest after each to allow joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles to recuperate and the long run should probably have a couple days of rest.

Rest days after running are important and help to avoid strains, sprains, fractures, and other injuries.

If you are going to be running a high elevation race that’s very mountainous you may want to add an outdoor intense bike ride, stair climber, or indoor cycle ride to change up the runs and challenge your legs in a different way. This non-running cardio training can replace one of your 3 runs weekly or be added to another day.

How can you make sure you not overtraining?

Make sure to warm up with a gentle walk before you stretch prior to any race. NEVER stretch cold muscles. You have to warm the body up before you stretch to avoid injury and to get the most out of your stretches.

How should you prepare the night before the race?

What should you do post-race?

The best way to avoid overtraining is to make sure the muscle group you just hit in the workout for the day gets a day of rest the next day.

That’s a good time to add or increase your protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats to help your body store up for the race ahead. You also want to be well hydrated. So drink extra water.

It’s best not to train and stretch the day before a race. Take a complete day off and sometimes even two days to allow any muscle tissue, joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones to be fully recuperated and healed from the stresses of all the training leading up to any race.

The morning of a race you want to eat your normal meal/snack at your normal scheduled times. Make sure not to overdo it get too full because this will force blood away from muscles you need for the race. If it doesn’t fill you up you could add a bit of complex carbs and lean protein but be careful.

You need to replenish water and glycogen storage. Racing burns up a lot of fuel and uses a lot of your water, so post-race you have to get re-hydrated and also get your sugar levels backup to a normal and healthy range. Make sure to eat something with a bit of sodium/potassium/magnesium to allow your body to catch and retain the water you drink to help you hydrate again replenishing those lost electrolytes. The best foods to help you with that and to bring your sugar levels back up to normal are bananas with peanuts, peanut butter on whole grain sandwiches, whole grain crackers with almond butter, yogurt with mixed fruits, and more similar options containing healthy complex carbs and proteins plus some natural sugars, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

We would like to set the record straight on some of the biggest myths surrounding braces and orthodontic treatment. Below are the facts about some of the most popular, outrageous, and funniest misconceptions and myths about braces.

1. Myth: Braces are only meant for kids.

Fact: Braces can improve a person’s smile and bite function at any age, as long as you have healthy teeth and gums. Approximately 30 % of Dr. Spurrier’s patients are adults.

2. Myth: Braces will increase my chance of being struck by lightening.

Fact: With or without braces, your chances of being struck by lightening are one in 960,000.

3. Myth: Braces are only for cosmetics.

Fact: While esthetics is important, Dr. Spurrier’s goal when aligning your teeth is to create a functional bite that will make your teeth less prone to future dental

problems. At your initial orthodontic consultation, Dr. Spurrier will evaluate a number of things, such as: Are your teeth straight? Do they meet properly? Does your tongue stick out of your front teeth?

Does your jaw hurt or click? Do you have a lot of crowding or large gaps? Are your teeth and gums healthy?

4. Myth: My braces will set off the metal detectors in airports.

Fact: Braces are made from lightweight materials that will not affect airport metal detectors. You are cleared for takeoff!

5. Myth: There is no difference between my Dentist and an Orthodontist.

Fact: Your family dentist diagnoses dental problems and performs a broad range of common dental procedures such a teeth cleaning, extractions, fillings, and crowns.

An orthodontist has already graduated dental school as well (usually in the top 5% of their class) and has also completed a two to three-year orthodontic residency

with 4000-6,000 hours of clinical training and specializes in treating orthodontic problems such as crowding and spacing of teeth, underbites and overbites, growth issues, and other malocclusions.

6. Myth: My braces interfere with radio signals or electronic devices.

Fact: Braces do not cause interference with any electronic devices. Unfortunately, you are not able to contact your favorite radio station or planet through your braces.

7. Myth: Braces hurt.

Fact: Recent advancements in technology have helped patients have faster tooth movement with less discomfort than ever before.

This marks the 14th year of Dr. Bryan Spurrier being a practicing orthodontist. “Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with not only correcting the alignment of teeth to create an esthetic and pleasing smile but also the relationship of the upper and lower teeth to create a harmonious and functional bite,” Dr. Spurrier says. He continues, “I love orthodontics because I have the opportunity to improve, not only my patients’ function, but their confidence as well by giving them the smile that will last a lifetime.”

After graduating from William and Mary as an Economics Major, Dr. Bryan Spurrier found his true calling while working a summer job at a dental office.

He made the jump to pursue a career in orthodontics. Dr. Spurrier attended the School of Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery and graduated second in a class of almost 100 students. After dental school, Dr. Spurrier attended the highly competitive orthodontic residency at Columbia University where he earned his special certificate in orthodontics as well as acted as an instructor to undergraduate dental students. Dr. Spurrier first became board-certified in orthodontics by the ABO in 2007.

We sat down and asked him a few questions about choosing a career in orthodontics.

What does an orthodontist do?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to

A specialist in this field is called an orthodontist. Orthodontists receive two or more years of education beyond their four years in dental school in an ADA-approved orthodontic training program.

What drove you to become an orthodontist?

My interest in helping people achieve the best smile and bite they can which spreads through so many other areas of their life.

What type of education and experience does one need to become an orthodontist?

A career as an orthodontist starts in college.

Students interested in becoming a dentist can major in anything they like, but certain science classes, such as anatomy and physiology, will be required for admission into dental school. Another dental school requirement is the dental school admission exam (DAT). The DAT is a multiple choice test, which covers quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and perceptual and math ability.

Dental school will take up the next four years of your life and includes classes, such as biochemistry and anatomy, as well as clinical work mastering the skills a dentist needs. Students will learn the basics, such as performing a dental exam, cleaning teeth, filling cavities, tooth extractions, and treating gum disease.

After graduating from dental school and passing the boards to become licensed to practice as a dentist, additional training is needed to become an orthodontist.

Orthodontic residencies are between two and three years long. After completing an orthodontic residency, dentists are eligible to take an exam administered through the American Board of Orthodontics.

As far as skills, orthodontists need to have very good manual dexterity since they will

be working in small, confined spaces in the mouth. Small details matter in orthodontics, so dentists in this specialty need to be detailed oriented.

Each Month, Spurrier Orthodontics features a different nonprofit partner to help raise awareness. Dr. Spurrier donates $250 to the charity. Every Thursday throughout the month, the team wears a T-shirt recognizing the organization.

Additionally, orthodontists need to have good judgment and strong problem-solving skills. Not all treatments work on all patients.

Orthodontists need to figure out alternative treatments when something does not work.

As with all areas of dentistry, good communication skills are vital. Orthodontists teach patients how to care for their teeth while they are wearing braces. Since orthodontist often treat children and teens, they should be comfortable caring for patients of all ages.

What is the most enjoyable thing about your job?

My patients become part of our family for at least two years. I get to know what sports they play, what organizations they are in what they do for fun, how school is going.

At the end of that two year time frame we look at the pictures of before and after orthodontic treatment and my patients realize just how far they have come and are so proud of our accomplishments. The increase in in my patient’s self-worth and comfortability is instantaneous. Even after treatment is finished so many of the patients return to get retainers adjusted or even just to say “Hi” to everyone at the office because they have gained lifelong friends.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I used to really enjoy mountain biking and skiing when I was not working. But now, being the parent of a five-year-old girl Elle and a two-year-old boy, the most precious moments of my free time is watching them grow and spending as much time having fun with them as I can.

What advice can you give someone who is looking at orthodontics as a career choice?

An interest in the biomedical sciences and a love for learning would be absolute musts for someone interested in becoming an orthodontist. A great idea is to “shadow” an orthodontist in their office to see what the inner workings of being part of a dental team is really like. We have had many of these “shadowers” come through the office over the years and a few of them have even gone on to dental school! www.showcasemagazine.com

Tricia Gammon is a go-getter. A Pittsylvania County native and current Danville resident, Gammon can be found doing a number of things. Whether she is practicing hot yoga, or handling activities as a board member of the Junior Wednesday Club, Gammon stays busy. Lately, however, she has been laser focused on her new business: Tricia Gammon State Farm Insurance.

Located on Mount Cross Road, Gammons’s business opened in June of this year. She says she is “hoping to better the lives of people in my community by helping them prepare for the unexpected and realize their dreams.”

Over the years, the Danville region, like many former textile communities, has lost a number of young professionals, who graduated from college and never returned home. This trend is beginning to change and Gammon is a shining example of this transformation.

A 2003 graduate of Tunstall, Gammon continued her education at James Madison University, graduating in 2007. She then spent four years in the suburbs of Philadelphia, before moving to Daytona Beach, Florida.

Gammon and her husband, Brent, desired to be closer to their family, however, and had heard about the positive changes that were taking place in Danville. So in late 2013, they returned to the place they had both called home for so many years.

“The people I love and care about the most live in Danville; and family is everything

to me,” Gammon says. “[Danville] also happens to be a small southern town with so much charm. People wave hello, hold doors open, and speak when you pass them for an evening walk. I’ve lived in other areas where that is not the case.”

That charm is reflected in Gammon’s personality, as evident by the way she treats her clients. By growing up here and being so involved in the community, it’s likely that when you walk in the door at her office, she’ll know you by name and if not, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve known each other for years.

Danville has undergone a significant transformation in the past few years and it’s one that Gammon supports and believes will continue. “I see Danville continuing to move forward,” she says. “We have new leaders that are open to change.

There are new businesses opening around Danville that are unique and trendy.”

Investing in our future is the key to recruiting and retaining young professionals like Tricia Gammon in the years ahead. “If we continue to invest in our town,” states Gammon, “we will continue to attract and retain young professionals, which will improve the local economy which in turn will improve the quality of life for our community members.”

A bright smile isn’t the only benefit from having a healthy mouth. Keeping tabs on oral health is an important way to monitor overall health.

Through oral microbiology we know there are between 500 and 1,000 different types of bacteria present in the human mouth.

According to a 2010 New York Times article, Dr. David Relman of Stanford University estimates around 100 to 200 are found in one person’s mouth at any given time. Practicing good oral hygiene—such as brushing and flossing—helps to keep bacteria to a minimum. Neglecting oral care can lead to many problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. Forgetting to brush also allows bacteria to thrive. In the MIT Technology Review article “Oral Ecology” dental researcher Sigmund Socransky states, “In a clean mouth, 1,000 to 100,000 bacteria live on each tooth surface. A person who doesn’t have a terribly clean mouth can have 100 million to 1 billion bacteria growing on each tooth.” Poor oral hygiene can have a direct effect on the rest of the body. Jarrod Brown, D.D.S. says, “The same bacteria that | OCTOBER 2016 | www.showcasemagazine.com

Your Dentist is Your Friend

Another aspect of good oral care is regular dental check-ups. How often you schedule an appointment depends on the overall health of your mouth. “If one has healthy gums and dentition, dental cleanings should be scheduled every six months,” Brown says. During biannual visits, biofilm and other bacteria that lead to tooth decay and gum disease are removed. Brown continues, “Patients with active periodontal disease (once referred to as “pyorrhea”) should schedule cleanings every 3 months to keep their oral bacteria level to a minimum, Brown says.” Regular check-ups also help to discover potential problems that may be lurking. Rachel Gatewood, D.D.S. of PATHS adds, “During check-ups dentists and hygienists also screen for oral cancers and other conditions; this means even if you have dentures, it is important to get your mouth checked periodically.”

Schedule an appointment as soon as possible if you notice an abnormality such as a

chipped or cracked tooth, lost fillings, or a lost crown. Even without pain don’t put off a visit to your dentist. “If one waits until they feel pain, it is often too late to save the tooth or prevent infection. Pain is our bodys alarm that something has gone very wrong,” Brown adds.

Protecting Our Teeth

We constantly bombard our teeth with substances that can present harm. Many tooth ailments can be avoided by moderate consumption of certain things. Brown says, “Anything with high acidity and high glucose level is dangerous to teeth, such as soft drinks, citrus fruit, hard candy, wine, and tomatoes.

Also, anything that has a hard texture can crack teeth such as crunching ice, eating whole almonds, peanut brittle, etc. Super sticky foods such as caramels, toffees, and salt-water taffy should be avoided as they can pull out fillings, crowns, and bridges. Sugary gums and candies or cough drops held in the mouth for long periods of time can cause decay on the roots of teeth, undermining their very foundation.”

Gatewood adds, “Sipping on soda or other sweetened drinks for an extended period is also worse for teeth than simply having a drink with your meal. Any time you have foods that are sugary or acidic it is a good idea to rinse your mouth with water afterwards or even brush your teeth.”

Combating Bad Breath

At some point, everyone has questioned his/ her breath and its ability to draw unwanted attention. There is a multitude of things that can lead to halitosis—cavities, gum disease, and dry mouth. But, bad breath isn’t always a sign of a problem with teeth. Gatewood says, “Bad breath can also be caused by problems with the throat and tonsils.” Drainage from sinus infections and even gastric reflux are known to cause bad breath. Smoking is also another major culprit of bad breath. It’s also damaging to gums. Brown offers this advice for preventing bad breath, “The best prevention is regular dental care, regular brushing and flossing, the use of bactericidal mouthwashes such as Listerine and Crest ProHealth, and implementing a tongue scraper. The cessation of smoking and the proper care of gastric reflux by OTC and prescription medications can also help in those patients with those problems.”

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

At the minimum, we should brush our teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once a day. “Ideally, one should brush and floss after each time one eats. This includes both meals and snacking. While this is not always convenient at work, at school, or on the road, it is most important for optimal oral

health,” Brown says.

After a long day at work, it’s easy to forgo portions of your nightly routine and turn in early, but brushing and flossing should never be skipped.” Brushing is especially important before going to bed to clean off anything that has built up throughout the day.

The mouth naturally dries out overnight,” Gatewood says. Brown continues, “While we sleep, our bodies do not produce as much saliva, so bacteria are not as readily washed out of the oral cavity.

This gives the bacteria a good chance to cause tooth decay and gum disease.”

It’s important not to eat or drink after nightly brushing. Brown suggests using an oral fluoride rinse such as ACT as an added layer of protection from bacteria during the night. You should also replace your toothbrush regularly every three to four months.

Devoting time and Rachel Gatewood, D.D.S. effort into maintaining good oral health is investing in your overall health. Brown says, “The oral cavity is the entrance to the body for everything: food, drink, most medicines, etc. Thus, it is very important to maintain healthy teeth to keep up good mastication (chewing) of food. Your mouth is the gateway to health. You must keep it clean and healthy.”

Gatewood urges that regular check-ups are crucial, but will not replace good hygiene at home. “Patients can save money and pain in the long run by getting routine care for themselves and children from the start.”

The benefits of a healthy smile are invaluable.

“A healthy smile goes a long way towards one’s appearance and self-worth. We are happier people when we feel free to smile,” Brown concludes. www.showcasemagazine.com

At this writing, it is beginning to feel like fall in the morning. So many people comment on social media that autumn is their favorite time of year because of the cooler temperatures and the beautiful colors of the leaves. I’m one of those people, or at least, once we get Halloween over with, fall is my favorite time of year.

The myths of Halloween are not myths at all. There really are cruel sacrificial rituals that are held during Halloween.

This little boy Chihuahua mix is about two years old. He came to us when his owner died. Bernard is energetic and needs to be in a home where he will receive lots of attention and exercise.

It is imperative, then, that companion animals be kept safe during this time. The best place for your dogs and cats is inside your house.

However, even if your pet is not in danger of being a victim of these horrible rituals, Halloween can still be a scary time for pets.

There are specific things that can be done to make them safer.

Make sure your dogs and cats – even the inside ones – have identification on them. Microchipping pets is a surefire way of providing proof that they belong to you, and can help them return home quickly if picked up and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic.

As doors are opened for trick-or-treaters, animals can be scared and dart out of your door. They can feel threatened by costumes, noise, or disruption of their schedule.

Do not give in to the temptation to let your pets have candy. Candy can be harmful to them, and chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats, and ferrets.

If you like Halloween decorations, extra caution must be used to keep your pets safe. If you use candles in jack-o’-lanterns, make sure your pet stays away. Accidents can happen, and the candles can quickly burn or set fire to a pet’s fur. Decorations that hang can pose the risk of pets becoming entangled; other decorations can be a choking hazard.

Not So Common – Common Sense!

A Perspective on Public Schools – What have we learned about the value of Advance Placement courses?

by Stan Jones, Superintendent of Danville Public Schools A research study by the College Board examined the barriers between the aspiration and enrollment of lower-income (under-resourced) students and their parents regarding the college application. This research followed an initial October 2010 report by the College Board entitled, Complexity in College Admission: Fact or Urban Myth, which found that, contrary to conventional wisdom, under-resourced students and their parents do not find the college application process overly complex.

The report also revealed the following findings: 1. Under-resourced students have similar or higher aspirations than higher-income students to attend college and are confident about navigating the college admission process.

2. Although both under-resourced and higher-income students say they receive plenty of information from colleges, under-resourced students are more likely to report being influenced by it.

3. Under-resourced students especially value personal support from guidance counselors, teachers, college alumni and college representatives in deciding where to apply.

During the 2015 – 2016 school-year 181 students in Danville Public Schools enrolled in 217 courses. At Galileo High School, 27 students enrolled in AP courses while 145 students at George Washington High School enrolled in AP courses. More than half of all of the students enrolled in AP courses (59%) completed an AP exam with 43% of the student earning a passing score on the exam.

Participating in a challenging learning environment prepares students for the academic curiosity and commitment necessary to succeed in a university setting while helping them develop the time management and self-discipline skills necessary to be successful in the work place.

In summary, our goal in Danville Public Schools is to continually improve opportunities for students to finish high school, college and be career ready. In doing so, we must be intentional about encouraging more students to pursue AP courses regardless of race, gender, income level or zip code. Historically, this has not always been the case, especially at George Washington High School. Under my leadership a true commitment to both equity and excellence is not negotiable. Please be assured that we are committed to being inclusive of all students to enroll in AP courses, not exclusive.

A STRONG EDUCATION BUILDS A STRONGER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Students who enroll in AP courses experience a rigorous curriculum and graduate from high school career and college ready. A recent study entitled, A Comparison of College Outcomes of AP and Dual Enrollment Courses compared the outcomes of students who participated in either program and graduated high school in 2006. The outcomes investigated were four-year college enrollment, persistence at a fouryear institution, graduation in four years, and graduation in six years, as well as first-year college grades.

The results indicated that AP students who had obtained at least one score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam considerably outperformed on all examined outcomes except for four-year college enrollment, which was highest for students who had taken a dual enrollment course affiliated with a four-year college. AP students whose highest exam score was less than 3 performed as well or better than did students who took a dual enrollment course affiliated with a two-year college for all outcomes. AP students whose highest exam score was lower than 3 outperformed students who took a dual enrollment course affiliated with a four-year college on some outcomes and underperformed on others.

In DPS, 43% of the students received a passing score on the exam.

While a pass rate may appear to be unimpressive, it is important to note that the true value of an AP course is in the level of rigor. AP classes teach students how to think and ask questions which are
