Sarah’s love for reading began in front of her mother’s bookshelf that was lined with old, out-of-print books, most written at the turn of the 20th century. She explains her love of old books, “It’s neat because I get little insights into the way people thought and what they did and even the way they decorated. There’s one book, The Indifference of Juliet, that I read and it told in detail how the house was decorated. I just ate it up,” she says with a smile.

One of Sarah’s favorite books, Laddie: A True Blue Story by Gene Stratton-Porter, belonged to Sarah’s grandmother, who gave it to Sarah’s mother, who passed it to Sarah, who plans to give it to her daughter one day.

Obviously, reading has always been a tradition in Sarah’s family and now Sarah, the new Director of Project Literacy, hopes it will become a tradition for many other families, too.

arah Rising is helping others turn a new page in their lives. As Director of Project Literacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting tutors with people who are interested in learning to read, she encourages everyone to pick up a book. “If somebody walked through the door who was 100 years old and said, ‘I want to learn how to read,’ we’d respond, ‘Let’s get started,’” exclaims Sarah with her trademark enthusiasm.

Sarah grew up near Danville, attended Bartlett Yancey High School and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor of science degree, but her career veered on a different path.

“It’s been an interesting road,” she says. During her senior year, while peers interned with businesses, Sarah chose to work at Dress for Success, a non-profit organization focused on helping women transition out of welfare into the workplace. Later there were jobs in Colorado and Georgia, but when Sarah returned to Danville, she wanted a different type of job—one that combined a desire for helping others with her love of teaching. “I knew it was in me,” she says, referring to her grandmother who graduated in1946 from Stratford College with a degree in teaching and her grandfather who was also a teacher.

Eventually, Sarah earned a certification in educational therapy at the National Institute for Learning Development and began tutoring at Project Literacy. Then, in January 2016, Sarah was offered the position of director. She continues her story, “I believe it was the hand of God. I’ve really felt blessed to have this opportunity.” Since then, Sarah has worked to improve Project Literacy and has plans for the future that include more training sessions for volunteer teachers, increased community involvement and opportunities for additional interaction between students and teachers.

“We’re more than just a place to come and learn how to read.

We want to encourage people as they better their lives, help their families and strengthen their community,” she adds.

Project Literacy is funded through donations, grants, and an annual fundraiser, Jeopardbee. Tutoring sessions are held in a classroom at West Main Baptist Church, 450 West Main Street, Danville.

Project Literacy has six tutors and an average of 10 to 20 students who must be 18 years of age or older. It doesn’t target a specific demographic. “We love that. We want people from all walks of life to be helped,” notes Sarah.

That means teaching can be challenging at times and she gives an example, “When you tutor an adult, it can be a long

process, and so patience and persistence are important.” Most students seek help for personal or work-related reasons; others are restarting their lives. “There have been students from grouphome settings. This is a way for them to re-enter the workforce and the community and be more prepared for opportunities,” she notes.

Living with a Free Spirit There are many definitions for spirit. It wasn’t hard to find the one that fits you--free spirit. The Urban Dictionary defines free spirit as one who is not restrained by convention or obligation; a nonconformist. I consider you a free spirit because you are the ultimate nonconformist.

When you shop, you’ll go out of your way to avoid a shirt with a brandname logo on it. I’d love to see you in a sport coat (you’d look 10 years younger), but you’re uncomfortable in one and prefer a suit instead. It took me years to get an up-to-date pair of tennis shoes on you instead of your old, worn-out white ones.

Occasionally, you’ll still sneak out for a walk with the comfortable ones.

I can honestly say that I have never worked with a more experienced, dedicated, caring team of workers than my staff in the Reference Department,

Diane, Lou, Becca, Danielle, I’ll miss our early morning monthly meetings, particularly having them catered by Main Street Coffee Emporium and I’ve already dreaming about lunch at Brewed Awakening.

Something else I’ll miss? Working with Joyce Wilburn these past months to include library events in Evince. Not only has Joyce provided an outlet to get the word out about adult programs at DPL, but she was also a great help to me as I developed in my feature writing.

Why Danville?

by Felice McWilliams My husband and I arrived in Danville on August 8, 2014, our 33rd anniversary. We were happy to have made it safely being that we were in a thunderand-lightning storm all the way here. The excitement of seeing our grandchildren made us press on through the tough weather and seeing their faces made every minute of the trip worth it.

In 2012, our oldest son was asked to be the worship leader of Danville’s New Ground Church and he and his wife along with our two grandchildren, (our daughter-in-law was pregnant with the third child at the time) moved away from us. It was heartbreaking and exciting at the same time. I never wanted them to leave but knew that my son was following the call to ministry.

All we could do was pray for them and hope it worked.

Secretly, I wanted them to return home.

Shortly after they moved, my husband retired and we were alone for the first time in 30 years. It was awful. I became sick with pneumonia for six months and ached to see my grandchildren. I wanted so desperately to meet my new grandbaby and be a part of their lives. Finally giving into my feelings, I told my husband I wanted to move to Danville and to my surprise, he was already prepared in his heart to go. So here we are, Danvillians!

The first year here has been

wonderful. We both love the slower pace of life and the beauty of this forested city. We fell in love with the residents and our church family. Everyone was so nice. Everyone said, “Hello” or “Hey y’all” as we passed by. Such friendly people, we both thought. We would have full-blown conversations with total strangers. Things we just didn’t do in California. During our conversations, everyone we encountered would ask, “Why Danville?” I’d explain our need to be a part our grandchildren’s lives and how much we loved this city. At first, we got many perplexed looks as we explained our reasons, but then we would soon be understood.

I came to be with my grandchildren but fell in love with Danville. So much history is attached to this city and state. I love the homes on Main Street’s Millionaires Row, the museums, the Riverwalk, Dan Daniel Park, the new YMCA, restaurants and local activities. On my daily walks I often read signs and plaques that explain the history of a building or home. I find that the Riverwalk is a good getaway place for a leisurely stroll in fresh air with beautiful views of the water and wild life. There are many community events throughout the year that give us opportunities to meet more of the wonderful people of Danville.

Therefore, my answer to the question, “Why Danville?” I say, “It’s a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We love it!”

Renovation Reality Part 3

e had owned our Main Street house for a few months and discovered that the hardest part about tackling such an enormous restoration project was the challenge of where to begin.

There was so much to do that it was difficult to set priorities.

We decided that the exterior envelope of the house was probably the most important aspect and set out to hire roofers and carpenters to repair the roof, the leaking gutters that were hidden, and the rottedout windowsills. Our first carpenter came to us highly recommended, so we showed him the crumbling windowsills and sagging window frames, gave him the keys to our home and told him we would be back in two weeks.

On our next visit, it was with nervous anticipation that we parked alongside the house, but the carpenter was there along with a helper. They had cut out all the weather-worn wood from the front windows and were just starting to piecein the new wood. They seemed

to be doing a fine job, although I noticed my brand-new set of files in the carpenter’s assistant’s apron and commented on it. I was reassured that they were only borrowing the tools, and the files would be put back in the toolbox where he had found them.

On the trip two weeks later, we admired the four windows that were nicely re-assembled and eagerly opened and closed sashes evaluating the work. As we finished raising and lowering windows and stepped back for a look at the entire window, it appeared that each of the new windowsills was tilting inward, toward the house. A level confirmed the problem and we

questioned the carpenter, who had arrived for his payment.

He explained quite patiently to us, using simple words so that we could understand, that windowsills didn’t have to be tilted outward away from the house to shed water. A thick layer of caulk would not only permanently shut the windows, it would prevent any water from coming into the house. We made it clear that this was not satisfactory and held back a portion of his payment until he finished the job correctly. He said that his initial quote did not include building the sills to shed water and refused to fix what he did not think was broken. It was, therefore, an easy choice to let him go and to find someone who

Over the next two months, we called every carpenter in town, but didn’t receive a single call back. We ran into one of the carpenters at the hardware store, who explained that no one wanted to do work for people who didn’t pay their contractors. So, this was how the small-town game was played! This was new for us, but we are quick learners.

We engaged the help of my sister-in-law, Tina, who had recently moved to town and who regularly had her hair done at a particular salon.

She was a doctor at a local practice and had been raving about her stylist to many of the doctors’ wives. They were now discovering this local talent and were pleased with the results.

This stylist also happened to be the sister of a contractor we know. When Tina suggested to her new stylist that she couldn’t possibly have her hair done by someone whose brother was spreading lies about her (Tina’s) brother, our phone started ringing again. Lesson learned.

Never underestimate the power of a single voice in a small town; never underestimate the importance of family connections and never take too lightly the value of a great hairstylist.

Spotting Exceptional Customer Service

Recently, I was at the McDonalds drive-through window on Riverside Drive at 6:20 a.m. for a cup of coffee. At that early hour, only the second window was being utilized. The attendant gave me my change and my coffee. As I put my car in gear and tried driving away from the window, the car didn’t budge.

After several attempts, I told the cashier that my car wasn’t moving.

Kim has taken a well-deserved break.

We look forward to her return next month.

I was in a panic because there was a line of vehicles patiently waiting behind me. Before the blink of an eye, the attendant was standing in front of my vehicle motioning for me to open my hood. Within a minute or two, she told me to re-start my car and try driving away. It worked! She explained that the car had a loose wire to the gear box. I was not only grateful, but impressed with the incredible customer service and quick thinking on the part of Samantha Walton! She deserves the Spotting Exceptional Customer Service Award.

esterday evening, Mandy Blue Eyes pulled up to Marteligo Alley in her newto-her beat-up green Buick, and me and Mean Keisha got in.

We went to the hospital where Mama was. I didn’t say a word.

I couldn’t. Mean Keisha couldn’t stop talking, babbling along with Baby Kwon.

could be. We all swing under the pendulum of that. And I’ve learned I’m not special, not really. She’s passing, now, Mama, soon. She’s giving me over as she gives away.

Today, no one takes me out of the room. They let me hold the hand they have stopped needling for blood she can’t seem to keep or give. I hold her and I don’t think I never stopped to love her right; we never stopped surviving. And Mama doesn’t speak. And I can’t speak. Mama sleeps now like a sparrow, shallow and quick. Mandy Blue Eyes, she’s my guardian now. Mama told me that, when she could. And Mandy Blue Eyes still held me when she walked me from the room, when they took me away.

She’s passing, Mama, soon. She’s giving over as she gives away.

At the hospital, I realize again I don’t know this Mama anymore.

I don’t know the voice like a throat full of flies, sunken eyes with the hope of maybe better gone. Tiny, she’s tiny now. And the whispers. I live with the doctors’ whispers, the soft close of hospital doors, the shuffled feet of hospice, and those soft shoulder touches of the nurses I got to shrug off to stay here and be sane.

The sheets are white and Mama is always cold. The water in the plastic canister on the rolling bed tray is becoming tepid. I smile for Mama, but she called me Rosalyn, and it’s not my name. “Fallon. This is Fallon, dear,” Mandy Blue Eyes corrects

Mercy fiction by Telisha Moore Leigg Mama. “It’s the morphine,” Mandy Blue Eyes says. I know Mama’s remembering other people, a cousin, maybe her own mother or father lost and lonely for her return. Mean Keisha’s boy, Kwon, cries and wakes Mama. Mean Keisha hugs the wall, eyes intent on my mama. And Mama smiles a little at us all, until even that goes. It’s Mandy Blue Eyes who takes my shoulder and holds me screaming and crumbling in because I heard one of the nurses in the hallway. I’m held when a nurse in sailboat scrubs says something in the hallway.

That nurse says to another of her kind looking at my mama; she says that it’s mercy now, it’s a mercy she’s going, the pain she means…

In school we read about Portia’s idea of mercy, but this ain’t nothing like that….School so rarely helps you with anything real. I admit defeat. I admit it.

I say please to a heaven I try to see through a hospital ceiling, but mercy doesn’t care. Mercy means be grateful to the thing that didn’t break you completely.

But I’m wrecked apart. I’m broken. I swear it. I swear mercy says be grateful because what little you have that ain’t tore up

Today, me and Mean Keisha feel the truth of this world. And, at 20 and 15, we might not know how to be in this world, but we know how the world really be. Ain’t too much mercy we see. Today, me and Mean Keisha smoke cigarettes behind the convenience store on Marteligo Alley because we can’t smoke at home. We tilt our heads back and being broke, life-beaten, and somewhat broken in Sustain, Virginia, all rolls up in smoke and pity prayers. I got all the mercy I’ll get in the empty sea-green glass beer bottles at our feet. *** “I’ll come get you. Don’t go far,” Mandy Blue Eyes says outside the hospital entrance. She looks at Mean Keisha to make me stay. But I know not to go and I know why. Mandy Blue Eyes seems to think it will be tonight.

She’ll pass, now, Mama; it will be soon. She’s giving me over as she gives away.

And Mean Keisha starts cursing and smoking, pulling it in her chest like an engine struggling up a hill. And there is light just across the parking lot from the hospital entrance, just enough to see a ridge of mountain, the tip of some radio tower, just enough light from this daydying sun. Stars and moon are set to rise while snapshot memories of Mama punch my throat. “Maybe…,” Mean Keisha starts, looks at my face, and she stops. I nod to keep her happy, but I know I got all the mercy I was going to get.

The spirit, however, is slightly more challenging to identify. My initial understanding of the spirit is that it could be synonymous with soul. My second thread of thought has led me to wonder, how can we describe exactly what a soul is?

It is without question, that we all have a soul and/or a spirit. Can we truly discern if they are the same or separate entities to our being?

Show appreciation for the guidance of the soul by honoring your values wholeheartedly and moving from a place of love. We may never be able to clearly define these miraculous parts of ourselves, but what we can do is embrace them.

On this Thursday morning in May, 30 players sit listening as letters and numbers are called out, hoping to hear their number, and excitedly covering squares on their cards. The minutes tick by in this fashion until G-53 is called.

“Bingo!” someone shouts and then draws a random number to win a prize at the end of the round. The game continues.

Diane Moore runs Bingo for Adults at the DPL that is open to anyone 18 years and older.

She says it started as a monthly program for Danville’s seniors about three years ago, but “Everybody likes it and we don’t turn anybody away.” Part of what makes Bingo so popular is the atmosphere in the room.

Today, Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services support specialist Donna Miller has brought 11 guests and another 11 have arrived with New Hope Support Services. As the room filled, a gentleman who hadn’t previously participated in DPL’s Bingo stood to offer his seat and to set up additional chairs for newcomers.

At the end of each round of four games (five-across a row, five-down a column, diagonal, and four-corners), Diane asks the winners to call out the numbers they’d drawn and she takes prizes around to them from a prize cart. As the rounds progress, the enthusiasm in the room picks up. Assistants help some of the players with special needs to cover their playing cards as Diane calls out numbers. Then B-1 is called followed by “Bingo!” Fourcorners has been won. Donna explains that the winner had “won already and wants her prize to go to somebody who hasn’t won anything yet,” which is a common occurrence during the games. This is the spirit that prevails at DPL’s Bingo for Adults, where it’s exciting to win but so much more rewarding to give.

The Thomas Day Performing Arts Festival presents this free music program staged by Fred Motley at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Women’s Club, 11928 Academy Street, Milton, NC. Thomas Day was a man of faith, a prominent citizen and a respected and widely known furniture maker in Milton, North Carolina.

His story will be told in a program of Negro Spirituals and Bluegrass Blues--songs from the antebellum era in which Thomas Day worked and lived in Caswell County. Both styles of music were shaped from a need to tell of the struggles in daily life while yearning for something better and underscoring the need for a closer walk with God. Each genre of music had an influence on the other. The Negro Spirituals will feature singers from Virginia and North Carolina. I

n catching up on obituaries the other day, I discovered the death of an 82-yearold friend, Jay Jefferson (JJ) Davis, Jr. Several years ago, he stopped in the train station/ natural history building of the Danville Science Center and began talking of the old days of both the railroad and himself. The casual, nondescript hat that he wore typified the fashion of Briggs and Stratton Company, but the pinned-on metal badges of many former railroads made it a mini-museum of their bygone logos.

JJ’s love of rail extended only to steam, representing his youthful good old days, without much regard for the streamlined diesels from the halcyon days of my youth. He often spoke of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, long gone before his birth and referred to locally as the Dick and Willie. He told me of railroad songs he had written and submitted to country singers, one sent to Marty Robbins, who gave it high praise. JJ often sang them to

ghost stories about the Old 97, so convincing that some people thought them real.

The other was about his family when he was growing up, complete with aged sepia pictures of uncles in World War II uniforms and a kid sister who passed away some years ago. I told him that in her picture at age six, she appeared to be a sweet child; he assured me that her sweetness lasted throughout her life. The residential street where the family lived later became Industrial Avenue, but JJ’s old vacant house still stands today.

Wildest Weather in the Solar System

Now showing at the Danville Science Center Digital Dome Theater a review by Deb Henderson Are you tired of the weather in south central Virginia? Not looking forward to another hot and humid summer? Think you’re ready for a change? If you’re looking for an extreme change, come to the Digital Dome at the Danville Science Center to watch Wildest Weather in the Solar System. This movie, produced by National Geographic, isn’t kidding when it says wild. With impressive computer generated images, you’ll explore the diverse and extreme weather found in space.

Moving through the solar system on various space crafts, you’ll see dramatic storms on the sun, methane showers on Titan and anticyclones on Jupiter that move hundreds of miles per hour. Think we have bad afternoon thunderstorms in the summertime here? Try to imagine lightning 10,000 times stronger than what we have on Earth or a storm the size of a huge hydrogen bomb. We are talking some extremely wild weather! It’s wild, too, how realistic these images are. And when you’re sitting in the dome, you are right smack dab in the middle of this phenomenal weather. All of this makes for quite an amazing show. But as the Science Center’s website

says, after seeing the extremes of weather found in space, you’ll be glad you live on Earth!

This movie is followed by a “live sky” planetarium show. A very knowledgeable Danville Science Center staff member shows the audience the nighttime sky over Danville and Pittsylvania County.

Images of the planets and stars visible in our region during this time of year are projected onto the domed ceiling and explained to the audience in very understandable terms.

What a great idea to include this with the admission to the movie! Children ten and older and their families are the target audience for Wildest Weather in the Solar System and the live sky show is appropriate for this age group too. The movie is shown every Tuesday through Saturday at 1:00 p.m. rain or shine. Come on down!

Creating the Right Spirit Fall Seven Times, Stand Up Eight

by Carollyn Peerman What is the greatest regret in life? It might be to play it safe and not make any mistakes.

Therefore, take a risk of the heart and reach out for what you truly want. Imagine the highest good that could occur by taking a risk.

If you fail, then what? Follow the Japanese proverb: fall seven times; stand up eight.

What about the risk of giving and receiving love? Love is a choice not an emotion. First, you must love yourself. One of the most important ways you choose to love yourself is to be careful about what you put into your body and into your mind.

Physically, you are what you eat; spiritually, you are what you think.

You have an average of 45,000 to 55,000 thoughts per day. These thoughts have an impact on how you see yourself. Negative self-talk undermines the love of self. Positive self-talk builds up the love of self. The love of self is nurtured by what you feed your mind. You and you alone have power over this internal conversation. Think how happy you would be in a relationship if you focused on things you liked about the other person and not on the things that irritated you. Learning to love others will carry you to all kinds of places.

Always see the good in other

people. Be inventive as to how you can bring more excitement into your relationships with others. Dare to live, dare to love, dare to connect. Make your life as exciting as you can. Be passionate about your curiosity.

Step out of the boat more.

Explore. Go for it. Reflect long enough so that you will learn to be true to yourself and to what matters to you.

“The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone,” said Harriet Beecher Stowe. Death is not feared by those who live wisely; only those who live foolishly and waste their time and talents fear death. There are tenminute funeral lines and ten-hour funeral lines. Ten-minute funeral lines are enough for a person who is not liked; ten-hour funeral lines are for those who are truly loved and respected. When you die, all your possessions will be left behind. Never allow things to be more important than people. Wisdom outweighs any amount of wealth. Don’t throw your life away. Choose a positive attitude no matter what your circumstance. Each day you have the power to give without limit.

And if you fall seven times, stand up eight!

Our life together was like a storybook tale Filled with hopes and dreams.

We felt it would never end Or so it did seem.

We had our ups and downs But only one bad time over the years.

But that was a very dark time Which brought both of us to tears.

Book Clubbing A Review by Diane Adkins

On My Own

by Diane Rehm

Diane Rehm has been the host of her own radio show since 1979 on WAMU in Washington, D.C. It has been syndicated to many NPR stations throughout the U.S. Essentially, it’s an on-air version of the salon. Rehm gathers several knowledgeable people from across the political spectrum to discuss current events each morning on the air. Unlike much of cable news, no one yells; it is a reasonable discussion among respectful people.

Rehm is blessed with an unceasing curiosity. Her questions get to the heart of an issue quickly; she is a person who truly wants to know about all perspectives on an issue of importance. Yo Yo Ma, the great cellist, recently said that the key to fruitful collaboration across disciplines is ego management; Rehm has mastered hers.

On My Own is the story of the illness and death of her husband, John, from Parkinson’s disease. John and Diane were married for over 50 years and this is an honest account of their relationship and its hard places, as well as Rehm’s guilt when she moves John to a place more equipped to care for him.

John eventually comes to feel that his life is no longer worth living. Yet, there is no pathway for him to end it peacefully, because Maryland does not provide a way for physicians to assist with suicide. John makes the choice to stop eating and drinking, refusing all medication except for morphine. The agonizing end--for both John and for Diane---takes ten long days. She comes out on the other side as an advocate for the right to die on one’s own terms. Diane Rehm knows most of the movers and shakers in Washington and the narrative is enriched by her inclusion of accounts of the loss of a spouse from some of these friends, including Roger Mudd, Eleanor Clift, and Susan Stamberg.

On My Own often reads like a series of journal entries as Rehm struggles to find a life apart from John. The quality of these very personal musings ranges from simplistic to profound, but they are always honest. Rehm will retire soon and plans to become an advocate for a person’s right to die. Reviewers tend to focus on the most controversial parts of a book, and for some, this advocacy is what matters. For me, it’s the deep honesty about the Rehms’ relationship and the turn toward her future that’s key. At 80, Diane Rehm has lived with and through two devastating neurological diseases in her marriage--she suffers from spasmodic dysphonia-and is looking forward to her next act. It’s a lovely picture of a woman healing and finding hope for the next chapter---on her own.

Your why, your purpose in life, is the driving force that breathes energy into your body. It’s what motivates you. It’s what energizes you. It’s what defines you.

Why is the focus and theme of this year’s Junior Leadership Southside VIII on Averett University’s campus. For one intensive week, 18 rising juniors and seniors from the Dan River Region will have the opportunity to learn what makes great leaders and reflect on their own leadership styles. Throughout the sessions, students will take steps to find their why. They will reflect on personal values, goals, mission, and vision.

They will step out of their comfort zones and break personal barriers.

They will learn about a pressing need in the community and use their skills and talents to help

alleviate it. Finally, participants will be encouraged to live every day with a spirit of why.

Like these students, our community is in a transition period. As we reimagine our identity, what is our community’s why? What is it that breathes life and energy into our community? More importantly, how can we influence our community in a way that it thrives with a spirit of why?

We challenge you to explore what defines our community—what breathes life and energy into its streets, its neighborhoods, its people.

Attend a community event, volunteer for a service project, visit a new business, spark up a conversation with someone you’ve never met.

Reflecting Forward The Spirit Moved Us

W

hen the spirit moves me, it also tends to move my husband, Steve. This is not because we’re surgically joined at the hip and have to do everything together. It’s because the spirit moves me toward projects that Steve does better than I do and then he runs behind me to remediate my work.

For example, I came home on a Thursday and started preparations to repaint one side of the garage.

The paint was peeling upward in large curled sheets like the hairdo on a 1960’s teenybopper. Seeing that yellow, flipped-up, peeling paint exposing the dark green roots of painted history jarred me every time I looked out the kitchen window while washing the dishes. That peeling paint grated on me like sandpaper works on wood. After a while, I just couldn’t stand it anymore.

So when Steve came bopping home that afternoon with no more on his mind than taking our aging dog for a slow stroll, I had already searched the basement for and failed to find paint scrapers. I’d dragged out some paint tarps to protect the plants. I’d found a ladder. I’d just moved all the bricks from their orderly stacks next to the garage to orderly stacks near the picnic table when Steve, who hates to be surprised with new work projects, walked in. Muttering something about his students starting final exams, he went searching for scrapers.

Now, I scrape quickly and Steve scrapes slowly. I know the paint is going to peel again in two years and I just want to scrape, paint, and move on. Steve wants to scrape so that he never has to scrape again. Hence, after we finish, he inspects my work and scrapes all the places he says I missed. This takes longer and promotes marital discord. I can’t clean up the paint chips on the tarps or start painting until he’s looked at every inch that I’ve scraped and scrapes it again. By the time he finishes, I’ve picked up dog excrement, weeded the garden, planned a power-wash-the-deck-andporches-and-apply-Thompson’s®Waterseal® project, and planned a neighborhood yard sale. Our dinner is served late and is mostly silent.

The next day, I find Steve has bought Kilz® paint: thick white paint that covers the newly exposed dark green underbelly of the garage, so I march out there to start slapping on the Kilz®. Now we have the old yellow satin finish, the white Kilz® cloud-cover, and the irregular dark green splotches. The garage looks like it’s molting. Steve urges me to lay it on thick, but he’s also running after me with a scraper, exposing yet more dark green paint. “When we’re finished scraping…,” I begin, but he’s still focused on yesteryear’s dark green memoir, and now I’m trying to paint over the green spots faster than he can expose them because I’ll never progress to the yellow topcoat if he keeps exposing the dark green faster than I can cover it up. At least the dog didn’t walk through any paint drips.

Next, he says I have to repaint with the Kilz® because the green showed through and while I painted as fast as I could, he was still out there with that scraper. It was a relief when everything was finally covered beneath a snowy coat of white blotched over the older yellow. When he bought the Kilz®, Steve also bought yellow paint, but the new stuff was flat finish, not satin finish. Never mind that, I thought. At least we have yellow paint. I’ll hang something from the eaves so I won’t look at the finish. I start slapping on the yellow, but only go head-high, because ever since I fell off a ladder, I’ve left high painting to Steve—the one who embraces deferred timelines.

Now when I look out the back window, I see perfect yellow up to head height, and above that, I see white splotches that haven’t been painted over yet. However, there is no green showing and I’m a cup half-full kind of girl. As I look at the splotches, they remind me of something. I take off my eyeglasses.

Dappled sunlight, I think. The spirit moved us.

Two of Virginia’s most popular grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Viognier (pronounced Vee-own-yay). If drinking a Virginia Cab Franc, it may be saying, “Whew, it’s really hot and humid here in the summer and the soil has its share of clay, but it’s moderately fertile.

I can handle it.” And, if you are drinking Virginia Viognier, it may be saying, “OK I can deal with all those things since I really like the warm environment here.”

You may hear a French accent while listening to these grapes because they originally came from France. Cabernet Franc comes from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley and Viognier comes from the Rhone Valley. Cabernet Franc adapts to different soil types and seems to really like

the Monticello wine region in the Virginia Piedmont. In general, our Cabernet Franc has earthy, herbal tea flavors with minimal fruit flavors allowing an easy drinking, food-friendly wine.

Viognier, recognized as one of Virginia’s signature grapes by the Virginia Wine Board in 2011, runs the gamut from subtle and crisp to exuberant and rich having floral aromas and flavors of apricot, peach and mango.

Next time you enjoy a glass of Virginia wine, you might say, “Thank you, Mother Nature, for this wine that speaks of the gentle rivers flowing off beautiful green mountains and the soft contours of the Old Dominion Piedmont.” Cheers y’all!

Fusion is inevitable. It happens when two different things collide to form something new—and Einstein says energy is released in the process.

It happens in every kind of art and in daily living.

Sooner or later, you’re going to pull those cowboy boots on with a stylish mandarin silk tunic and voila, you’ve fused western and Asian couture. The more open we are to fuse new and different ideas, the broader our horizons and perhaps the energy produced will fuel our creative spirits. It’s such a natural thing to do that it was no surprise when chefs began to fashion entire restaurants and menus by combining foods from different cultures.

Fusion takes a little bit of common sense and then let the creativity roll. I’ve had some dishes that I thought were a little bit overboard, or maybe just not my taste, and some so delicious I couldn’t imagine why they weren’t born together. The first time I thought about food fusion was in Germany. We were enjoying one of their incredible stews and I was thinking how delicious this would be with a big piece of Southern cornbread. I also remember thinking that a big glass of iced sweet tea could change the beverage climate, but maybe not, considering all that wonderful beer that’s available. It’s always a matter of taste.

For this recipe I fused two of my favorite things, a spicy, Italian arrabbiata pasta with Caribbean-flavored shrimp soothed with honey and cooled with avocado. It was a quick, week-night dinner with not much of a plan that turned out to be a favorite. Fuse some of your favorite flavors and see what happens!

Pasta Arrabbiata with Honey Garlic Shrimp (4 servings) 12 oz. orecchiette pasta, cooked according to package directions and drained 4 oz. arrabbiata pasta sauce 1 T lemon juice 2 T chopped fresh parsley, plus extra for garnish 1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 1 lb. large shrimp, shelled and deveined

1 1/2 T honey 1 T lemon juice 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. Cajun seasoning 1 T olive oil 1 T butter 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 avocado, cut into eight slices 1 lime, cut into eight wedges

Add pasta sauce, lemon juice and parsley to cooked pasta. Stir to combine; top with Parmesan cheese and set aside.

Combine honey, lemon juice, salt, and Cajun seasoning and set aside. Add olive oil and butter to iron skillet (or your favorite skillet if you don’t have an iron one) over medium heat. When butter has melted, add garlic and cook for one to two minutes, stirring, then add shrimp. Cook shrimp until pink, turning once. Add the honey sauce, stir to combine and cook until sauce is reduced and begins to caramelize. Top pasta with shrimp, pouring remaining sauce over shrimp. Garnish with avocado, lime and chopped parsley.
