Canadian Shorthorn Association President’s Message

As we close out 2024 and embark on 2025, we can reflect on the past year and how successful it was. This spring we saw more bulls trade than ever before for more dollars for our producers. With that, there will be more Shorthorn calves hitting the ground this coming spring and great marketing opportunities for the year.

The Juniors had their Leadership Conference in Guelph this year. It was a more of a hands-on event this year.

From all reports everyone had a great time while gaining knowledge of the industry. The summer brought us many 4-H and Junior shows across Canada, most notably the Canadian Junior Show. Remember the JUNIORS are the ones who organise, plan and fundraise for these events. Many thanks to our youth advisors, Shayla Chappell and Jim Murray for helping guide our Juniors.

Also held in Saskatoon, in conjunction with it was the Canadian Shorthorn Meetings. The board met for two days prior to the AGM, discussing many items Two items coming out of these meetings were that all semen collected in Canada for domestic sale are to have proper CFIA documentation, if imported, or documentation from the AI stud where it was collected on file at the CSA office before progeny can be registered. Also, the Pacer Performance Program where we will recognize bulls and females that have exceptional stats. This will be a program where individuals can grow. It will take some work on your part, most notably submitting ALL weights, birth, weaning and yearling.

The Fall brought the shows and sales. Many thanks to everyone who exhibited, attended and helped in any way to make these shows a success. We saw some of the highest averaging sales across Canada ever.

Definitely growth in our industry.

Moving forward in 2025 there will be many events where Shorthorns will be the highlight. The Junior Leadership Conference is being held in Truro, N.S. This will be a chance of a lifetime to attend. Wish I was a Junior again! The CSA AGM is also being held on the east coast in Wolfville, N.S. Maritime hospitality will be at its finest.

Now the event that comes to the forefront is the World Shorthorn Conference starting out in Alberta going across the prairies and ending in Ontario. Shorthorn enthusiasts from across the world will be attending.

This event only comes to our country every thirty years so plan to attend, all or at least a part of it. Thanks to Dennis Cox and his team that’s has put a lot of time into planning and organising this event. Look inside this issue for complete details! The Shorthorn breed has seen some great growth in both Memberships and WHR enrollments in 2024 and projecting the same in 2025.

The Shorthorn breed is growing, and we are looking very positive for 2025.

Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association Happy New Year, Shorthorn Juniors!

As we bid farewell to 2024, we reflect on the incredible achievements of our junior organization. We are immensely proud of the many Shorthorn juniors who showcased their livestock and talent at the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair, Farm Fair International, and the Canadian Western Agribition along with all the other fall shows to wrap up 2024.

Looking ahead, the CJSA is gearing up for an exciting year! We can’t wait to host this years Stars Leadership Conference in Nova Scotia on February 21st – 22nd. Keep an eye on our social media and website for registration details and information about travel bursaries – this is shaping up to be our best conference yet!

17th World Shorthorn Conference & Tour ‘Foundations for the Future’

On July of 2022, I had the privilege of attending the 17th World Shorthorn Conference/Tour held in the UK, and celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the establishment of the ‘Coates Herdbook’, the first formal pedigree record of cattle (Shorthorn) in the world.

My intention in writing this article is to present Shorthorn Report readers with my impressions and general themes that I came away with having attended such a Historic event in the century’s long progression of ‘Shorthorn’ breed history.

As Canada was scheduled and had agreed to be the venue for the 18th World Shorthorn Conference, and as the Canadian Shorthorn Association representative, I was nominated to be the World Shorthorn Council president, along with Mr. Monty Soules, of the USA, as the Vice President, and we were both duly elected to these positions.

TED HOSSFELD- SUNN n YDALE FARM

At the age of 19, Ted was back at Walkerton Public School but now as a teacher. Ted had a 35 year teaching career; nine years at Walkerton and then the remaining 26 years at Holland Chatsworth.

Over the years, as Ted’s eyesight deteriorated, he had to retire from teaching and the Musical director positions which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Ted taught mostly Grade 5 and says he was a teacher from the “old school”. His teaching emphasis was on English Grammar, Mathematics (you had to know your times thorn Asso tables) and Music. They showed heavily throughout the 40’s 50’s and 60’s.

There were many shorthorn shows throughout the area in those days with Teeswater being one of the larger fairs. Ted recalls that over 100 head of Shorthorns could be exhibited at Teeswater Fair. Ted said the competitiveness was always high between breeders but there was no rivalry- everybody

Over the years Gar-Lind Shorthorns have purchased some memorable herdsires, from herds known for their quality genetics: Kenbar Sunrise 88S, Kenbar Perfect Bet 20W, Gafa Private Eye 1W, Glenford Max 24E, Saskvalley Roughneck 154R, Clythe Mane Tango 1T, HC Royal Red 57Y and Alta Cedar Maxim 3R. Gar-Lind won Alta Cedar Maxim 3R was a bull they won at Agribition in 1995. Looking back, Gary and Linda have expressed how fortunate they

1. The By-Laws may be amended by the affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members who have voted through ballot submission (mail-in ballot or electronic).

2. Notice of all proposed amendments shall be given to the secretary in writing, signed by two members in good standing, at least sixty (60) days before the date of the Annual Meeting.

3. The membership will be notified by of motion received at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. All notices of motion will be taken to the Annual Meeting for discussion and debate and may be amended there by a simple majority of votes cast.

4. Within 15 days of the Annual Meeting, a ballot along with the notices of motion, or, amended notices of motion will be sent to the membership. Ballots must be returned to the Canadian Shorthorn Association office by no later than 45 days after the Annual Meeting to be counted. The results of any votes will be held in total confidence until all votes are counted and the results of all votes will be released by the Canadian Shorthorn Association President or Board of Directors.

5. To receive a ballot in 2025, memberships must be purchased on or before Saturday, May 31, 2025.

6. Amendments to or the repeal of any by-laws shall become effective upon approval by the Minister of Agriculture (Canada) and registration in the Department of Agriculture (Canada).

7. All notices to amend the by-laws must be received in this office by Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

He was responsible for bringing Shorthorns to the Bar U Historical Ranch as range improvers. He served as Director for the World Shorthorn Conference in the UK. Rolly also loves assessing cattle.

He has spent many hours and days judging cattle all over the world. He has judged up to 40 4-H shows in a year.

He has travelled extensively all over the world as a judge, including Canada, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Uraguay, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Germany and Austria. His dedication to the cattle business, and finding

Manitoba Commercial Breeder Of The Year - Aurel & RIta Vodon Aurel & Rita Vodon have been farming for the past 32 years on the farm where Aurel was raised, located between Virden & Pipestone.

They started out milking cows for several years and then switched over to beef in 2001. They have three sons, Trevor, Terrance, and Tyler, which are actively involved in the cattle operation.

All together, they run a little over 500 cows. About fifteen years ago they decided to start using some Shorthorn bulls on their commercial cows in order to add more pounds to their calves, as Shorthorns are well known for their strong milking trait. They also chose Shorthorn due to their good temperament and excellent crossbreeding genetics. Over the years they have purchased Shorthorn bulls and females from numerous purebred breeders throughout Manitoba and say they will continue taking advantage of the excellent cross, as they are extremely happy with the results.

Time seems to have flown by. Here we are at the end of a busy show and sale season in Alberta. We are pleased to say that Shorthorn numbers at the fall shows have increased! Olds Regional Show and Farm Fair International both reported higher numbers this year. Farm Fair International celebrated its’ 50th Anniversary this year and the National Shorthorn Show was held there as well. The Shorthorn breed was the 3rd largest represented at the show and Farm Fair reported that the Shorthorn breed has seen the highest growth in numbers. Breeders from across Western Canada were represented this year. It was great to see so many exhibitors, new and old. For show results, please visit the Farm Fair website.

From September to December, there have been many sales this season. New sales have been starting up the last couple of years and this can only mean good things for the breed. A full listing of all sales and events can be viewed on the website at www.albertashorthorn. com. The Alberta Shorthorn Board has worked hard this year to increase communication with the members and enhance transparency in all that it does. We hope to continue this trend into the new year and beyond. We look forward to meeting new members and rediscovering old acquaintances. Howdy folks! It appears as though another year has come and gone and wow was it ever a good one! The cattle market saw record highs in 2024 that look to carryover into the upcoming year. As a young producer myself it sure is nice to see the optimism in not only the cattle industry but the shorthorn breed as well.

Once again this fall there was a terrific showcase of Shorthorn cattle at Manitoba Ag Ex. The Shorthorn numbers continue to grow at this event making it a show everyone should have marked on their calendars. Thank you to all the exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers who make this such a success!

The fall/winter sale season was very strong in Manitoba this year and for the first time we had two Shorthorn female sales! New this year was the Gentle by Nature Shorthorn sale which was held in September and saw a strong set of open heifers offered to the public. The 3rd annual Jewels of the Prairie Female sale was held in December and saw a combination of purebred opens and breds as well as Shorthorn plus females in a very strong market. Congrats to all the consignors of both of these great sales, Shorthorn females were very well represented.

Next on the agenda will be our upcoming AGM as well as another edition of the Manitoba Bull Test Station sale where there will once again be a good selection of Shorthorn bulls and females.

We were encouraged by the number of 4-H members out shopping for shorthorn projects in the fall. There seems to be quite a few young people that come back again and again for shorthorn projects and we hope that they continue on with Shorthorns as they go forward in life.

This spring was the first time we had the opportunity to do a feed trail on purebred heifers.

We tested 39 open purebred heifers. For this discussion, we separated them into two groups.

Group A (Table 1a) is 13 heifers whose sires were tested and exceled for individual feed efficiency. Group B (Table 1b) is 26 heifers that were sired by bulls not tested or did not excel for individual feed efficiency. In the trial group A and group B had almost identical starting body weights and almost identical ending body weights.

Thus, the ADG for both groups were almost identical. Group A heifers ate 9.3% less feed on average than group B heifers.

With the ability to measure, rank, and select animals by individual intakes, we can improve feed efficiency and the profitability of our cow herd.

We believe a 10% reduction in feed intake while maintaining performance is very achievable. Consider how feed efficient a cow herd could be 10 or 20 years from now Page 26 with 3, 4, or 5 generations of feed efficiency genetics stacked in the pedigrees.
