A

t Shorter, students are encouraged to value academic excellence, become proficient in multiple disciplines, develop a biblically minded worldview, think critically, serve others, and love God. Although very few people are able to become an expert in so many different areas, one woman who exemplifies each of these qualities is Dr. Kathi Vosevich.

Vosevich came to Shorter in 2008 as a visiting professor of English. She earned her Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Denver. She was already a successful businesswoman with a career that included high-ranking jobs at companies such as Microsoft, Sprint, and Titan.

In her 11 years at Shorter, Vosevich has continued to soar. She now holds the titles of Associate Provost, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Professor of English.

Dr. Angie O’Neal, Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Liberal Arts, first met Vosevich in 2008. Over the years, she has constantly been impressed by Vosevich’s talent and effectiveness in increasingly greater positions of responsibility. “As a woman in higher education and administration, I have watched her and noticed the way she interacts with people: the way that she handles herself as a leader with such finesse and such diplomacy,” O’Neal said. “I admire her standard of excellence and the fact that she’s such a capable person. Everything she does, she does well.”

While at Shorter, Vosevich took charge of the Honors Academy and helped hundreds of students graduate with honors. In addition, she sponsored Shorter’s chapter of Alpha Chi Honor Society. Under her leadership, Alpha Chi won the President’s Cup, the most prestigious award offered by Alpha Chi. Vosevich was recently named Vice President of the National Council of Alpha Chi in recognition of her abilities as a scholar and a leader.

Aside from the honors, awards, and national recognition, Vosevich played an instrumental part in something much less glamorous: Shorter’s accreditation. The SACSCOC accreditation process is a grueling undertaking that goes on for months, and she worked tirelessly to see that Shorter performed well. Dr. Fabrice Poussin, Associate Professor of French, voiced his admiration for Dr. Vosevich’s tenacity throughout the process.

“Accreditation is a monster, and she had the courage to confront that. She has been working extremely hard on this for the last six years,” said Dr. Poussin. “There’s no doubt that she spent a lot of time working on it, writing the reports, and making sure that we would pass with flying colors, and it’s not easy to get that done.”

There is no question that Vosevich’s presence here at Shorter has done wonders for the quality and success of the school. For many students and teachers, though, it is her friendship and consistent, meaningful presence in their lives that has made the biggest impact. And, despite her growing list of titles and accomplishments, Vosevich remains the same helpful, accessible, and self-effacing woman she was when she first arrived at Shorter. To many students and teachers, she is known simply as “Dr. V.” “She’s just always been here: first, as a colleague and a friend, then as my chair, and then as my dean,” said O’Neal. “She’s just not the kind of person that’s going to hold authority over your head. Even though she’s been my boss for much of that time, I still think of her, first and foremost, as a friend.”

Mary Corbin, who serves as the Assistant to the Associate Provost, has known Vosevich for nine years and sees her every day. It is because of Vosevich’s dependability and steadfast presence as a friend that Corbin values

It’s not just faculty and staff that Vosevich is there for, either. She also invests herself in the lives of her students on a daily basis. Jay Chambers, a senior Christian Studies major and a member of the Shorter Honors Academy, noted that Vosevich invested in his life, both academically and personally. He sees her selfless and giving behavior as a representation of her faith. “Dr. Vosevich understands the meaning of ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself,’ and that understanding courses throughout the way she approaches life,” said Chambers. “She has pushed me towards being a better person, and I am utterly grateful.”

Without a doubt, there are countless people who are grateful for Vosevich’s presence in their lives.

Sadly, after 11 years, her time at Shorter is coming to an end; this semester was her last on the Hill.

For Corbin, the change will be both noticeable and difficult. “I’m going to miss her terribly. We’re like family. The first time I met her, I thought, ‘If she ever left, it would be a huge loss.’ There is something about her; you just know she has so much to give.”

Despite her absence, Vosevich’s influence and impact will endure here at Shorter for many years to come. For some, the part of her that will carry on is the example of excellence she set for them. O’Neal said, “To some extent, I’ll always see her as the standard. She’ll always be the standard that I compare myself to.”

Others, such as Poussin, will remember the way she immersed herself fully into any task she undertook. He said, “The passion she has for everything she does is going to stay here, and perhaps the courage she gave us as well: the fact that we can model ourselves after her and what she did for us.”

Vosevich meant something special to each person she knew here at Shorter, and many would be hard-pressed to explain just how much her being here meant to them. But, for those who were blessed enough to build a relationship with this remarkable woman, it is enough to say, “I knew Dr. V, and I’m a better person because of her.”

Students are Transforming Lives Through Christ

F

or the past two years, Shorter University’s baseball team has partnered with local elementary schools to help provide assistance for students in need.

Through a program called The Backpack Buddies, the team helps provide meals to students at Anna K. Davis Elementary and North Heights Elementary.

Most of the students who benefit from this program are on free or reduced cost lunches at school due to low or limited family income. While these students get a good lunch at school, their food at home may be quite limited or nonexistent at times, especially on weekends. Since food and nutrition are so closely linked with the ability to learn, the team wants to make sure students have nutritious meals over the weekend so they are ready to learn when they arrive at school on Monday. For this reason, the Backpack Buddies Program was created. This program provides participating students with a small bag of food each Friday afternoon that is placed in their book bag. There is no cost for the participant’s family.

Partnering with a local food bank, the Shorter

baseball team spends time three days per week picking up food, packing it, and delivering it to both elementary schools. What makes the program more genuine is the fact that the baseball team personally delivers the packaged lunches to the schools. Even though the team comes to the school, they are not able to interact with the students who are still in the classroom learning.

However, the staff and teachers convey their thanks and appreciation for the team’s dedication to helping these children.

Another reason this is so impactful is because the students know that the people who care for them are student-athletes. It gives the students someone to look up to. Shorter baseball players also benefit. Junior Banks Woodley said, “It means a lot to all of the guys on the team because we know we are helping kids receive meals over the weekends that they normally wouldn’t be able to have.”

The Backpack Buddies program is a way for Shorter baseball players to give back to the community and show what it means to “Transform Lives Through Christ.”

Students from all academic disciplines celebrate their academic achievements during the Honors Program. This was the first year that all departments held one combined ceremony to celebrate their honor students.

Dr. Kathi Vosevich, Associate Provost, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Professor of English was the guest speaker for the Honors celebration.

Dr. Vosevich champions honors students and encourages them to work diligently to pursue their academic goals.

Honoring the Best

onor societies from all academic disciplines gathered this year to induct students into their respective organizations. In the past, each department held its own induction ceremony for honors students. This year, however, all departments pooled their resources to host a combined ceremony in January.

Dr. Angela O’Neal, Director of the Honors Program, Associate Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Liberal Arts, was excited about having a combined honors society induction. “We have many talented people here, and I love having programs that showcase and celebrate the many discipline-specific honor societies we have on campus.”

Honor society faculty representatives from various departments participated in the event. It was special for those students being inducted. “It was very humbling to be recognized. ...The Lord has blessed me in so many ways,” said senior psychology major Kendall Knowles.

The induction ceremony was not only special for new honor society members but also for veteran members. Rachael Minard, a senior communication studies major and president of the Lambda Pi Eta (LPE) communications honor society, participated by giving new members their pins. Minard fondly

remembered her own induction. “The most memorable part of my induction was having the chord placed around my neck. It was at that moment that I realized how far I had come in my college career.”

Dr. Kathi Vosevich, Associate Provost, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Professor of English gave the keynote address and challenged students to continue to pursue academic excellence.

A longtime proponent of honor societies, Vosevich spoke about how achieving academic excellence and being an honor society member helped her career in both the professional and academic arenas.

According to O’Neal, being a member of an honor society is a mark of distinction and not just a résumé builder. “Being in an academic honor society gives students opportunities to connect and network with people in their discipline, both locally and nationally.

These societies also help to build an academic community to support and encourage students.

Students can also find opportunities to attend conferences and even publish their work. Last but not least, they can be fun! Our English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, goes on regular outings together to places like the Shakespeare Tavern,” said O’Neal.

This new way of honoring students was a success.

Faculty and students hope to keep this tradition alive for many years to come.

he Shorter Comedy Society was created in August 2018. Within the organization, Side Stitches: An Improv Comedy Troupe, was founded by Assistant Professor of Theatre, Drew Davidson. Davidson said he wanted to create the improv troupe because people “need laughter as an antidote to the chaos around us more than ever.” According to Davidson, the long-term vision for the group is to perform monthly and after every stage production. Eventually, Davidson hopes the group will become involved in shows in and around Rome, as well as compete at college improv tournaments.

Comprised of a diverse group of students, the team of ten has performed three shows since August. The comedy troupe allows students to connect and interact in ways they might not have had the opportunity to do otherwise.

According to junior member Noah Hunt, “Comedy is a fundamental step in the road to human fellowship and communication. We bridge islands with laughter!”

Davidson established the group because “Life is rough.

Improv frees performers from fear of judgment. It allows audiences to escape from life’s burdens and laugh for a moment or two.” He went on to explain that improv has the ability to reveal invaluable life lessons. “Improv teaches you how to listen, how to find agreement with others, and then build off of their ideas; appreciate that something is there and then it’s gone, the ephemerality of life; how to be present in the moment; frees people from judgment; how to support one another, reclaim power over fear, be comfortable in your own skin, and how to find the Truth.” Sophomore member Christianne Grist agrees wholeheartedly. “Improv has given me a unique opportunity and a creative outlet, not to mention my Shorter Side Stitches family! The team is such an unlikely group of people, and improv, laughter, and comedy bring us together.

Being on stage and thinking of things to say and do on the spot has helped my communication skills and has made me quicker on my feet. Involvement in the troupe has pushed me out of my comfort zone within the comforts of a family, and because of this, I am much more spontaneous and outgoing.”

ave you ever wanted to have a twin? Have you ever thought about how great it would be to have a brother or sister that you did everything with, and who also looked just like you? Many people see twins as fascinating because they are rarer to see than regular siblings. When speaking with twin brothers Drew and Alex Givens, they talked about how they are always asked many questions by curious people who want to know what their day to day lives are like.

Q.

What are some common misconceptions that people have about the two of you because you’re twins?

A.

“People ask us all of the time if we can sense where the other is and feel what the other feels.”

Q.

Have you ever switched places and taken a test in place of your brother?

A.

“Of course! We used to have an official day a year that we did it!

Sometimes twice a year!”

Q.

What do you want people to know about what it’s like being a twin?

A.

“It’s fun! Having a twin comes with the benefit of having a best friend ALWAYS! If you can get over the fact that your clothes are worn more by your twin, it can be very exciting!”

Do the two of you have different hobbies/interests?

“Alex loves to sing and act. I myself love to dance and act. We try to teach one another to love the other’s passions!”

Are there physical attributes that help people differentiate between the two of you?

A.

“My hair is a lot longer than Alex’s! We are a lot alike but also very different.”

Statistics from 2017 show that there were 33.3 twin births per thousand while in 1980, there were only 19 twins born per thousand. Even though twins are still a rare occurrence, they have become more frequent.

According to a study done at the University of Texas, identical twins are more likely to occur by chance, but fraternal twins are usually hereditary.

If fraternal twins run in a family, the chances of giving birth to twins increases.

Opposite sex fraternal twins account for two-thirds of twin births, while identical twins account for only onethird. If twins are the same sex, it is much harder to determine whether or not they are fraternal or identical.

However, if the two are commonly mistaken for each other, they are most likely identical. The only way to make sure that the twins are identical or fraternal is through DNA testing.

Recently, semi-identical twins popped up in Australia. They were discovered through genetic tests and both shared one placenta. However, these twins happened to be male and female, which is not possible for identical twins. Thus, the semiidentical term was born, pun intended.

This occurrence is extremely rare, as this was the first and only time semiidentical twins were discovered.

Our fascination with twins will undoubtedly continue.

D

r. Robert Darville III, Chair of the Department of Business Administration and Professor of Accounting, has been a valuable member of the Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business for thirtyfour years. Although he plans to retire from fulltime teaching, those students and faculty he has impacted through the decades will never forget him.

Darville's love for students is evident in the many lives he has touched during his years at Shorter. “I had Dr. Darville for Intermediate Accounting 1 and 2. He always taught us to be professional. He believed in giving us practical applications to go beyond just the theory.

This really helped us be prepared for our future careers," said business major Courtney Bach.

Darville has not only impacted students but also his fellow faculty and staff members. "Dr. Darville took a chance on me eight years ago as a young man. He has mentored, guided, and befriended me over the years. I thank him for taking extra time with me and for taking a chance on me as a young adult. Dr. Darville is a mentor and a colleague, but more importantly a great friend.

He will always be a representation of Shorter and the love it carries," said Dr. Heath Hooper, Dean of the Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business and Associate Professor of Sport Management.

In addition to Darville's commitment to academic excellence, he has supported on-campus organizations such as the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and Shorter Hawks sports. He has served as a guest speaker for the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and

showed support to Shorter Hawks athletics through game attendance and financial donations.

Darville is also well-known in the Rome community where he currently serves as a member of the Rome/Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, the Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Confluence Committee. In 2013, he was selected as a participant in the Leadership of Rome XXXI program.

Serving in the local church is important to Darville. He is currently a member of the Three Rivers Community Church.

He also served Fellowship Baptist Church as a Bible study teacher, deacon, chairman of deacons, and as a volunteer church administrator.

Throughout his career at Shorter, Darville served as Dean of the Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business, the Chair of Business Administration, and the Sewell Chair of Business Ethics.

He holds degrees from Southwest Mississippi College and Mississippi State University. Prior to his arrival at Shorter, Darville taught at Columbus State University and Louisiana College. He also served as a Church Administrator and Minister of Education. Darville is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister and holds CPA certification in Georgia.

Darville's students and colleagues wish him well in his retirement and will always remember the impact he has made on their lives. Courtney Bach said it best. "Thank you for everything that you have done for us over the years. The many hours in the classroom, lunch trips, and long talks in your office will never be forgotten. Enjoy your retirement; you deserve it!”

D

rew Davidson has come a long way to become an Assistant Professor of Theatre here at Shorter University. “It was a 100% God thing. This move was divinely orchestrated. I believe God specifically created this position for me.” Davidson has immense experience in theatre and improv. He has had a heart for comedy since performing in his first improv show in seventh grade.

Davidson graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and received a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance from the University of Mississippi. During graduate school, Davidson was inducted into the Graduate Student Hall of Fame for Outstanding Research.

When Davidson is away from Shorter, he runs an Online Dialect Studio where he teaches aspiring actors how to speak with different accents. He has also created improv groups, curriculum at three universities, and led workshops involving improv techniques. Also, for the third year, Davidson will host a Shakespeare Festival that he and his wife began in Kentucky. In addition to his accomplishments in the area of theatre, Davidson is certified in Single Sword and Hand to Hand combat by the Society of American Fight Directors and Dueling Arts International.

Davidson gives all glory to God for bringing him to Shorter and is excited for his next chapter here, stating ,“This truly was a God thing.”

alking across the stage in recognition of academic achievement is a goal many students try to accomplish. On Awards Day, 28 seniors saw their hard work and determination pay off when they were awarded the top honor from their respective departments.

Senior McKenna Massengale, a middle grades education major, was thrilled to represent the School of Education during the ceremony. “It was really special to get this award as I have worked very hard this semester during student teaching. I am so passionate about teaching middle schoolers and felt honored to receive this specific award. I am so thankful for my professors at the School of Education who have poured into me and helped me to become a teacher.”

Allie Perry, a senior nursing major, credited her academic success to God and the wonderful professors who invested in her education. “I’m just in awe of how God has sustained me through nursing school, and I give the glory to Him. My professors challenged me to bring my very best each day.”

In addition to recognizing student excellence, faculty and staff were also recognized for their service to the University. Dr. Charles Carter, Associate Professor of History, received the President’s Award, while Dr. William Gary Cole, Assistant Professor of Education, received the Vulcan Award. Students chose Dr. Brent Baskin, Associate Professor of Christian Studies and Youth Ministry received the Argo Award, an honor chosen directly by students.

Awards Day was a time for those who are members of the Shorter family to reflect on another successful academic year on the Hill. The entire campus came together to recognize students, staff, and faculty who had outstanding performances this school year.

uthentic. Real. Compassionate. These are words students use to describe Dr. Brent Baskin, Associate Professor of Christian Studies and Youth Ministry.

Baskin, a Shorter professor for six years, is an inspiration to his students both inside and outside of the classroom. “Dr. Baskin has inspired me through the passion he possesses for his students. He’s known for modeling the University’s mission, Transforming Lives Through Christ, in every aspect of his life. He constantly challenges me to first serve Christ and then do my absolute best in everything that I do in order to bring glory to the name of Jesus” said Logan McKenzie, a senior Christian Studies major.

Kendall Knowles, a senior Christian Studies minor, said Baskin has influenced her through his strong passion for teaching. “Dr. Baskin has the supernatural ability to believe in students more than they believe in themselves. He sees every person’s potential and wants to do anything in his power to help his students succeed. Dr. Baskin goes above and beyond and is generous with his time. His patience, compassion, and wisdom

have been instrumental in guiding me towards my future,” said Knowles.

In addition to Christian Studies majors and minors, Baskin has also had the opportunity to teach Old Testament and meet students from across all majors. Many students have remarked about his teaching methods and care for students.

Eric Knusten, a sophomore education major, said, “Dr. Baskin embraces teaching as a calling from God. He started every class with prayer, which really set a spiritual tone for the class. He used excellent teaching techniques that really engaged students. He set an example for me as a future professional educator. When I become a teacher, I hope I can live up to the example he has set.”

Baskin holds a B.A. in Biblical Studies and Psychology from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR, an M.A. in Christian Education and Ph.D. in Student Ministry from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, he has served as an associate pastor, student minister, education minister, and children’s minister for 14 years at churches in Texas and Arkansas.
