Letter from the Editor Dear Hawks, Another Argo has been completed and distributed to the students, faculty, and staff here at Shorter University. As a senior, I look back on these four years and wonder how it went by so fast. The Argo has been a keepsake for me throughout the years as a way to remember the wonderful times I had on the Hill. From my time as a collegiate athlete as a member of the women’s soccer team to fun events with fellow classmates, Shorter will always be a place full of memories with people who have become like family.

I hope this year’s theme will connect with the student body in a way that is different from the Argos before. The theme, “A Hawk’s Eye View,” showcases the viewpoints of Shorter’s students. The numerous talents, organizations, teams, events, and accomplishments are highlighted throughout this digital yearbook. Readers will receive a glimpse into what it was like to be a Hawk during the 20162017 school year.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years as a member of the Argo staff and as a Hawk.

Being able to show the students, faculty, and staff all of the achievements from this school year makes all of the late nights worth it. The staff has created a digital yearbook brimming with pages of Hawks soaring to new heights. As you peruse the pages of this digital edition, I hope you are able to reminiscence on an amazing year. Camp Hawk is a proud

tradition at Shorter University.

“Camp Hawk was a weekend designated for the incoming freshman to get acquainted with their new home. The activities were specialized to help new students get to know the campus, meet new friends, and learn about the resources available to them,” said Director of Student Life Cassie Thomas. Freshman spent the weekend learning

how to succeed in their first year of college, participating in fun activities, and most importantly, worshiping the Lord.

Colby Fisher, a Shorter Orientation Staff (SOS) member, had an amazing time this year leading the freshman through this fun-filled weekend. “As an SOS member, it was truly amazing watching freshman make friendships that will last a lifetime at Camp Hawk, make their first memories of

their college years through all of the activities, and watch Shorter become their new home so quickly. I absolutely loved every minute of it!”.

“My favorite part of Camp Hawk was probably the Sunday morning service in the chapel. Worshiping with all my new friends was fun and I enjoyed the sermon,” said freshman Tyler Pullum.

Students learn about Shorter’s study abroad program. Six students studied abroad this school year and went to places like Costa Rica and Spain.

Each year, the Depart-

ment of International Studies hosts International Education Week to celebrate and bring awareness to international studies on Shorter’s campus and across the world.

This year, each day showcased a different event, including the international photo exhibit, the Study Abroad Fair, the Around the World Dinner, and a special chapel service that focused on missions.

The Around the World Dinner is an anticipated event each year. This year, international students celebrated the week by cooking food from their native countries and sharing it with others. “The Around

the World Dinner was a great way to meet other international students and taste some brilliant food that you wouldn’t have a chance to taste otherwise,” said Rudi McWhirr, a junior communication arts major from Scotland.

The Study Abroad Fair provided information to Shorter students who wished to study in a foreign country. Each semester, students took advantage of the study abroad program by immersing themselves in the culture of the countries they visited and learned more about their chosen field of study.

“Studying abroad opened my eyes and mind to new perspectives. It was an amazing experience that pushed me

out of my comfort zone, and as a result, I grew in so many areas of my life,” said senior communication arts major Taylor Wilkerson.

International Education Week was a huge success with both the international and the domestic students.

Assistant Vice President of International Programs Dr. Linda Palumbo-Olszanski said, “International Education Week was a great opportunity to celebrate international education on Shorter’s campus. Students got to know other cultures through events celebrating food, art, and other cultural influences. The week allowed us to bring the world to Shorter.”

Homecoming is always

an exciting time on the Hill. This year’s festivities proved to be no different.

The weekend started with the annual alumni dinner.

There was also a family festival and pep rally. On Saturday, a tailgate party was held before the homecoming football game.

During half time, the

10

winners of the homecoming court were announced. The nominees for homecoming king were Caleb Britt, Joseph Bobbitt, Branden Lutes, Brice Duke, Benjamin Riess, and DeMarcus Simmons. The nominees for homecoming queen were Kennedy Cullen, Ashtin Hyde, Abby Patrick, Taylor Wilkerson, Brittney Greene, and Destiny Kerr-Brown.

The winners, elected by the student body, were Caleb Britt for homecoming king and Taylor Wilkerson for homecoming queen.

Overall, homecoming weekend was a weekend to remember and a tradition that will live on for years to come on the Hill.

After being scored on her performance in a private interview, fitness, talent, on-stage question, and evening wear portions of the show, Tyler walked away with the talent award and the opportunity to represent Shorter in the Miss Georgia 2017 pageant. “I’m not just excited about winning,

but about the opportunities that this is going to bring along as well.” Her talent was reciting a monologue related to her platform, The Children’s Miracle Network. “I went into this wanting everything on stage to be about God and His purpose,” Tyler said.

Now that Tyler has won, she can focus on her journey to Miss Georgia. “The experience as a whole is what I am most looking forward to,” Tyler said.

The chapel theme for the school year

Campus minister David Roland said, “We wanted to encourage students to see how their lives could be used by God.” Not only did this year’s chapel service serve as a general outline for the campus community, but it also gave speakers the chance to impact the minds of young people for Christ. “It’s wonderful to know that we were in an environment that allowed our professors to preach the gospel and to teach

us how to live a more Christ-focused life,” said senior biology major Catherine Mitchner.

Every Wednesday at 11 a.m., chapel services were held to motivate faculty, staff members, and students to come together and worship the Lord through the use of songs and sermons from various speakers. “For many of us, we went through a lot during the week.

During that one hour, we were able to put aside the stress of the school week and come together as one,” said sophomore political science major Promise Clark.

Each year the Fitton

Activities Board (FAB) hosts a variety of fun events to allow students to take a break from their studies and enjoy fellowship with one another.

This year, events included bowling night, skating night, grocery bingo, an ice cream bar, a donut bar, a nacho bar, movie night, bonfires, and so much more. These events were a hit among students looking for fun things to do on the weekends or on weeknights.

The student life staff provided good, clean fun

for the students to enjoy. A particularly big hit among students was the off-campus activities, such as bowling and skating nights. Sophomore early childhood education major Taylor Slade said, “I loved bowling night because it was a night for everyone on campus to have a few hours solely to focus on friendships and nothing else.”

The FAB events provided every student the opportunity to take a quick study break, socialize, and enjoy the college experience.

Another student who enjoyed the events was sophomore Christian studies major McCauli Suttles. She said, “I liked movie nights because there were a lot of a people who attended, and we had yummy snacks like popcorn and drinks. It was a really good place of community because we got to hang out on blankets with our friends. It gave people something to do on campus when they couldn’t always go home on the weekends. It was always just tons of fun!”

The sisters of the Kappa Chi

chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) dedicated their efforts this year to strengthening the bond of their sisterhood and striving to raise awareness about their philanthropy.

Forty-four women made up the close-knit group of sorority sisters who excelled in their relationships together, as well as in their academics.

President and junior political science major Ada Panni said, “The bond that we had as sisters was something 16

unlike anything I had ever experienced. We always spent time together by encouraging one another and pushing each other to succeed.”

In addition to making fun memories together, the women of the Kappa Chi chapter also saw success in academics.

This year, the women won the award for Highest ZTA Chapter GPA in the entire nation.

One of the main commitments the group made last year was to their philanthropy, breast cancer awareness. The

sisters of Kappa Chi organized events to raise money to go toward the cause. Their biggest fundraising events were selling flats of strawberries, their yearly “Pink Week” event, which included the crowd favorite “Big Man on Campus,” and a 5K race.

Junior psychology major Breanna Hodges said, “I loved supporting breast cancer education and awareness. It felt good to know that the efforts my sisters and I put forward can help change others’ lives.”

Delta Pi made it their mission to help young women prosper during their college years.

Alpha Delta Pi focused on different aspects of college life such as academics, leadership, and social life. At the heart of their sorority was their philanthropy The Ronald McDonald House Charities. The chapter hosted several on-campus events

throughout the school year in order to support its philanthropy. “As a chapter we held events to provide proceeds that we donate to the organization as a whole.

We also visited semi-local houses of RMHC,� said sophomore English major Stella Parker.

The sisters worked tirelessly to build their chapter from the ground up; the impact they made on campus was not gone unnoticed.

Delta Sigma

The Theta Psi chapter of Delta

Sigma Phi have accomplished a wide range of goals since their first year on Shorter’s campus.

The national organization received two Pyramids of Excellence, as well as several individual achievements.

In addition, many members went on to receive national awards. The fraternity’s motto, “Better Men, Better Lives,” pushed members to go above and beyond by providing them with life and leadership skills.

Senior communication arts major Caleb Britt said his favorite part about being in the organization was being around like-minded men who strive for excellence.

“As a senior, I enjoyed being able to form lifelong relationships with young men who started out as strangers but came to be known as brothers,” Britt said. “Had it not been for my time in Delta, I would have never shared some of the experiences that I had throughout my college career.”

Delta Sigma Phi’s national philanthropy was the American Red Cross, and its local philanthropy was the American Cancer Society. The Theta Psi chapter helped coordinate three blood drives throughout the year, and the members volunteered for the Relay for Life race.

his year the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) hosted a series of events such as student Bible studies, fundraisers, multiple mission trips, and Christian Focus Week. They helped many people come to know Jesus through their compassion and desire to teach about His love.

The BCM raised money for mission trips and other events through fundraisers such as the Spoon Games, Penny Wars, and Thanksmas. This brought many people together and made them feel comfortable and engaged doing ministry.

The Shorter Orientation

Staff was a leadership team on campus that worked with incoming freshmen students to ensure they were prepared to transition to college life. The staff worked with the Office of Student Life to hold activities for new student orientation and to lead orientation sessions. Additionally, the staff assisted with other events on campus such as Camp Hawk, welcome back activities, and more.

Members of SOS lived on campus together during the summer and underwent training to learn how to answer

any questions that incoming students or their parents had, to prepare an orientation day skit, and to ensure the campus was ready for orientation days. Plus, the group grew extremely close and formed an unbreakable bond with one another. “It was the best summer of my life,” said junior nursing major Cheyenne McLemore. “I got to be on campus with my friends for the summer and had the rewarding opportunity to welcome incoming freshman to Shorter.

The Shorter Orientation Staff served as a great outlet for incoming students to get

to know the staff and build relationships with them before beginning classes. When they arrived on campus in August, they saw familiar faces who were available to help them with whatever they needed.

“SOS was so fun,” said senior history major Brice Duke.

“It was a unique experience because I had the opportunity to build friendships with fellow staff members and helped to add to the Shorter experience for incoming freshmen. We were their first impression of the wonderful community that is Shorter. I loved it!” said Duke.

Men’s and Women’s The 2016 season for the Lady

Hawks had ups and downs due to the amount of competition in the difficult Gulf South Conference (GSC). Two juniors, Taylor Hendrix and Kayla Miller, shared their opinions on the season.

Miller said, “It was not our best year, but hopefully next season we will be better.” Even though they desired to see more wins in the stat book, these athletes kept their heads up, and they hope to have a better season next year.

Through the many highs and lows of the season, the women’s soccer team stuck together and stayed positive.

Both Hendrix and Miller loved being a part of the team.

Hendrix exclaimed, “The girls were awesome! They pushed me to my limits.” Miller said, “The team was great because we were all like a family.”

Both players had specific skills to contribute to the team. For Hendrix, it was her knowledge of the game, expertise at her position, and knowing what to do in each given situation. Miller, who played the position of holding midfield, contributed to the team with her “positivity, being there and helping others when needed, and pushing them to be the best they could.” These positive qualities, along with the qualities of the other players, made for a great team who look forward to a winning season next year.

T

he men’s soccer team had a historic 2016 season. The Hawks captured second place in the GSC, the first year the team had ever finished in that position. The second place position gave the Hawks a bye in the first round of the tournament.

Although the Hawks started the season off at a slow pace, they finished the season on a high note.

Hard work and team chemistry helped the team come together and have one of the program’s best finishes ever. French newcomer Jordan Etsio helped the Hawks up top as a striker. “The season was intense.

We started poorly, but we ended up improving a lot. It was a good season for the men’s team,” Etsio said.

T

he 2016 Volleyball team had a tremendous year as they finished with a 22-7 overall record.

They secured 11 wins at home and ended the regular season tied with West Florida for the best record in the conference. The Lady Hawks and the Lady Argos shared the GSC Regular Season Championship. This was the second time in three years the Lady Hawks won the regular season in the GSC. The Lady Hawks’ last game came in the semifinals of the GSC Tournament, and they lost to the University of North Alabama. However, the season ended on a high note as junior Tiffani Estep was named to the DII Conference Commissioners Association All-Region Team and senior Elizabeth Dowd was recognized as All-Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Six seniors led the team this year both on and off the court. Senior Cheyenne Frady always looked to assist her younger teammates in volleyball and in life. “Being a senior on the court made me step up. I always had people on the court to look up to, but this year, it was the seniors’ job to lead everyone. Having that in my mind really made me be the best player I could be for the girls around me,” Frady said.

Frady also explained how being a part of the volleyball team impacted her life over the last four years. “I’m going to miss volleyball, but even more, I’m going to miss the girls on my team. Each one changed my life for the better and made an impact on me, both as a player and as a person. I made so many incredible memories over the past four years that I’ll never forget,” Frady said.

The 2016 football season was a transition year for the player and the new coaching staff.

Two players who held down the defensive side, Willy Dorcin and Josh Kimble, shared their personal opinions about the season. Dorcin noted that the season did “not go as planned, but I understood that we were a young team still growing a new identity.” Josh Kimble said, “It was all about getting better, so it went okay.”

Both of these seniors loved the game of football, and everything that came with it. Dorcin said his favorite part was “the physicality of the game. It excited me and also caused me to push myself to another level.”

Quick on their feet, these two players made impacts on the games in their cornerback positions. Dorcin said his strongest attribute for football was his speed. Kimble noted that “I am strong, and I am fast.” These unique players used their speed and strength to play their positions to the best of their abilities.

Both Dorcin and Kimble enjoyed being in the football environment.

Dorcin said, “I met so many different people and learned new things from each coach I had the chance to meet.” Kimble liked being a part of the team since the beginning. “It was fun, and I have loved football since I was young,” he said. The football team made everyone feel like they were part of a big family. This made for a great environment and a fantastic experience for the players.

Coach Aaron Kelton, Shorter’s new head coach, had much to say about the school and the team. “Coaching at Shorter was a true blessing. My team worked really hard and, though our record didn’t show it, we had plenty of success daily. I enjoyed leading the Shorter Football Program.”

Kelton, who had many expectations for the football season, said, “My expectations were always high for my team and the program. I thought we would have had more wins than we did. I was disappointed that we weren’t able to reach all of our goals, but I was really proud of my team. They were very special people who continued to change their lives daily.” Kelton, knowing the team was young and still learning, was very patient with them, and he looks forward to having a great season next year.

The track team had a remarkable season.

Indoor and outdoor track meets kept the team busy, and the teams were successful throughout the fall and spring semesters. Both men’s and women’s teams had many honors, placing in the top three teams in many of their meets. One of their most successful meets was the Emory Classic where the men’s team placed first, and the women’s team placed second overall.

The relay team also had a standout meet at the Florida Relays. The Hawks broke school records for sprint medley, 4x200m and the 4x400m.

Female freshman track athlete, Oschia Hodge, had a great first year on the track team.

“From the hard work, to competing, to lifting weights after a hard workout, to bonding with my teammates and coaches, I had an amazing time being a college athlete. My favorite Bible verse says, ‘And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,’ and that was exactly what I tried to do both on and off the track,” she said.

The Shorter University softball

team saw the 2016-17 season as a growing year, both on and off the field. After losing only one player to graduation a season ago, the young team said goodbye to only four seniors this year.

With Jessie Homesley as the new head softball coach, the Lady Hawks felt that her presence was just what they needed for the new season.

“We loved Coach Jessie for all that she did for us. She helped out tremendously last year, so her being the head coach now was kind of the way that we had always seen her,” said junior early childhood education major Abi Valdes.

Outside of their time on the field, the Lady Hawks also engaged in two volunteer opportunities in the community. This season, the softball team committed themselves to working the annual pancake breakfast at the Rome Civic Center in November. Their second volunteer opportunity came in the fall when they held several prospect and kids’ camps for players who wanted to get better and play collegiately.

Junior pre-nursing major Peyton Barthel said her most cherished memory from this season was being able to spend time with her teammates while developing a stronger relationship with the Lord. “We pushed each other day in and day out whether we were on the field practicing or just dealing with life’s circumstances. These girls were so much more than just my teammates; we were a family. Even after our days on the field were over, I knew that our bond would still be true,” said Barthel.

Shorter Baseball had a year of up and downs,

yet a solid overall record at approximately .500.

The Hawks’ batting was above average with eight of the team’s players batting over .250.

The Hawks hit an impressive 37 home runs and turned in around 200 RBIs. A welcome addition to the Hawks Baseball team this year was freshman utility man Bailey Gerstner. Gerstner batted over .400 and contributed a significant number of RBIs. “As a freshmen, with this being my first year in a higher level of the game, it was a fun and humbling experience to watch all of the talent that this team holds,” Gerstner said.

Senior Blaze Vasquez also contributed again this year, hitting seven home runs with an impressive number of RBIs. During his time with the Hawks, Vasquez was a very valuable player who contributed much to the team. “Each year at Shorter got better and better. The atmosphere and new coaching staff made playing the game a lot of fun. My favorite memory was starting off the season this year with two home runs in one game in the first series of the season,” said Vasquez.

his was a rebuilding year for the Shorter University women’s basketball team. The Lady Hawks went 8-19 and missed the Gulf South Conference tournament after making the playoffs two years in a row.

Adams wished the season could have been better, but she enjoyed her time on the floor.

“I was still blessed to put on that jersey and walk onto that court with my teammates. We just had to keep our heads up and be thankful we still had a chance to play the sport we loved so much.”

Adams, along with point guard Brittany Greene and forward Grace Rogers, was one of only three seniors on the team. The rest of the Lady Hawks were young. Four players were freshmen, and two starters, Kayla Tillie and Raven Fair, were both sophomores. Both Tillie and Fair looked forward to two more years at Shorter. The season was a disappointing one for the Lady Hawks. However, with so many young players gaining experience and already making an impact, the team’s future looks bright.

Basketball

A combination of fresh talent and veteran players helped boost the men’s basketball

team. The team went 17-12 and reached the GSC quarterfinals.

The Hawks said farewell to four impactful seniors after the season’s end, including standout point guard Phil Taylor. Taylor had a historic season averaging 34 points per game, which led all schools in NCAA Division II. The 5’9 guard scored more than 50 points four different times during the season, including a 62-point explosion against Carver Bible.

Brown, a true freshman from Orlando, provided an extra source of energy for Shorter. The 6’4” guard averaged just over 11 points per game and shot better than 51 percent from threepoint range, displaying an impressive level of skill and intensity in the face of his more experienced opponents.

Brown said, “It was hard to score and hard to defend if you didn’t give it your all. I learned I had to bring it all to every game.”

The Shorter University Lady

Hawks had a great year in 2017.

With an equal balance of success on the offensive and defensive sides of the matches, the Lady Hawks went 10-5 on the season.

Sophomore Hannah Pridemore, senior Crystal Marshall, freshman Morgan LeBlanc, and senior Shelby Beverly scored 38, 33, 30, and 30 goals respectively.

Senior Crystal Marshall summed up the season up as she said, “The battle doesn’t start until you’ve reached the hardest part.”

Pridemore received the GSC Defensive Player of the Year award. Seniors Alex Abbey and Catherine Mitchner also received mentions for the All-GSC teams.

The men’s lacrosse team looked

to rebuild during the 2017 season after losing ten seniors last year.

With difficult road games and tough competition, the team had to rely upon each other and their coaches to stay positive.

Freshman midfielder Austin Zumbado helped the Hawks offensively. He had 19 goals and five assists, the most goals of any player on the Hawks this season, and tied for most assists. Zumbado also scored two hat tricks this season, one against Tusculum College and Keiser University.

Sophomore midfielder Matt McHugh was another player who had a good season for the Hawks, scoring 10 goals and adding four assists. He acknowledged the difficulties of the season.

“We faced a lot of challenges this year, but we never let that bring us down. It encouraged us to get better every day.” McHugh said.

the fall and spring seasons as they welcomed many new freshmen onto the teams.

The Lady Hawks finished 7th out of 9 teams at the first tournament of the season, the Full Moon BBQ/Montevallo Invitational. Sophomore Dallas Vaughn finished first for the Lady Hawks.

At the Coker Women’s Spring Invitations, the Lady Hawks improved to finish 4th out of 8 teams. Paula Oviedo finished first for the team and first for the tournament overall. This was the sophomore’s first collegiate win, shooting 153, which was 6 strokes better than the second place finisher.

The Hawks struggled to find momentum this season. The team placed last at a majority of their tournaments, but with many sophomores and juniors on the team, the Hawks hope to find the results they are shooting for next season.

Both teams competed or the Gulf South Conference (GSC). The Hawks came in 11th overall, and the Lady Hawks scored 5th place.

had a season of highs and lows. Sophomore Kade Kitchens was the lone Hawk to reach the DII National Championships. He represented the school in the 165 weight class.

However, Kitchens dropped both matches on the first day of competition and was eliminated. He finished the season with an overall record of 27-10.

Men’s & Women’s Tennis The men’s tennis team struggled this season, but they hope to make adjustments for next season.

The team went 4-13 overall earning wins against Morehouse College, Marion Military Institute, Gadsden State, and Christian Brothers.

The women’s tennis team had a similar season going 4-14 overall. The Lady Hawks defeated Georgia Southwestern, Clark Atlanta Univeristy, Dalton State, and West Georgia. The teams look to improve next season in the Gulf South Conference.

he Shorter Cheer Hawks had a full season of practicing, training, performing, and winning an NCA National Championship! Their fall and winter seasons consisted of practicing and performing during football and basketball games, while their spring season has consisted of preparing for the National Cheer Association Nationals that took place in April in Daytona, Fla. In August, the Cheer Hawks won a gold bid for the competition in the Division 2 Small Coed Advanced category, which awarded the team with free hotel stay for the duration of their time in Daytona. “This moment had an unexplainable Sophomore Brittany Richardson trys to pump up the crowd feeling,” said sophomore nursing major and cheerleadduring a sunny SU football game at Barron Stadium. er Katelynn Robinson. “After a hard week of training, learning camp cheers, chants, and a rally routine, we had accomplished our goal.”

Throughout the school year, the Cheer Hawks hosted special events such as training clinics and fundraisers. Events such as the Hawksgiving Clinic, which took place during November, was their first annual Thanksgiving event. The team also hosted a routine showcase in the spring to perform their NCA routine for students to come and watch. The team traveled to Daytona, and placed first out of 12 teams to win the National Championship.

The 2016 – 2017 season was Chad Reid’s first full-time season as the head coach of the Cheer Hawks and the team’s ninth season of competition cheerleading as part of the National Cheerleaders Association. “I am honored and humbled to be able to coach at Shorter,” said Reid. “I was born and raised here in Rome, so when the opportunity came available, I jumped at the chance.” Members of the Cheer Hawks have enjoyed their first full season with the new head coach. “He is so amazing,” said senior nursing major and cheerleader Abby Patrick. “He has such a great vision for the cheer program, and there is no doubt that he can guide our team to a win.”

ence for incoming freshman and helped introduce them to life at Shorter.

Aside from helping students to make the transition from high school to college, LCs helped students share classes with those who also shared similar interests. In addition, LCs were also a great way for students to feel a sense of security while being away from home and experiencing their first semester in college. Not only were the classes taught by trained instructors, but they were also assisted with the help of upperclassmen who served as peer mentors to support freshman students in their new transition. The peer mentors

were able to provide valuable experience that will aid the underclassmen for years to come.

“I was able to give them advice from when I was a freshman regarding how to successfully get through their freshman year,” said peer mentor Laura Williams.

With the help of the learning community, students learned important lessons in time management that they will be able to utilize even after they depart from The Hill. Freshman Learning Community10 takes a break after serving at the Rome Action Ministries.

In addition to teaching students valuable lessons in management, freshmen students were also taught important lessons in humility by participating in two service learning projects. Students assisted at either Rome Action Ministries or Restoration Rome. Freshman Jacee Guinn said that her expectations were exceeded many times over when she got the chance to work at the food pantry with her LC. “The hearts of everyone, even the ones least expected, shone with a light of service and love for the less fortunate in our community,” said Guinn. Learning communities gave freshmen the tools to succeed in their college careers.

Much Has Been Given and Much is Expected Alpha Chi has served as a national academic honor society with

300 chapters throughout the United States where they induct approximately 12,000 members annually. In order to be eligible for the honor society, juniors and seniors must be within the top 10 percent of their graduating class. In October, 17 members were inducted, and the group welcomed new sponsor Dr. Barsha Pickell, Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Social Sciences Department.

In her first year as Shorter’s Alpha Chi chapter sponsor, Pickell said to be invited into this organization was a very high honor. “It showed that the students worked hard and remained focused on their studies,” said Pickell. She also stated that she was excited to work with this group of students.

“Much has been given to these students; much is expected.”

This was the theme of this year’s induction ceremony where Dr. Kathi Vosevich, Associate Provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, gave the keynote address to the recently inducted students. After hearing the message from Vosevich, junior Christian studies major Nathan Gaydosik said, “We have great shoes to fill, and it’s a great honor to be a part of this organization.”

New member and junior criminal justice major Laura Williams said being a part of such an illustrious organization showed dedication and hard work for all of the students involved. “Although the road started out easy, as time progressed it got a little tougher. But I was able to maintain my grades and prevail, so that I could succeed,” said Williams.

wards Day 2017 took place on April 7 in the Winthrop-King Centre. The special ceremony awarded high-performing senior students for their achievements within their academic majors. Faculty and staff service awards were recognized as well.

celebrated the academic achievements of eleven students chosen to participate in Celebrate Shorter this year.

“The purpose of Celebrate Shorter was to recognize and celebrate the excellent work that students did here at Shorter, as well as to honor God as we are called to live a life for Him,” according to the Honors Committee who sponsored the event.

Both students and faculty alike enjoyed Celebrate Shorter. “I had an amazing time at Celebrate Shorter as a participant and an observer. It was awesome to see how the Lord used students to present research in a plethora of fields,” said senior communication arts major Caleb Britt. Dr. Bill Mullen, Professor of Communication Arts and a member of the Celebrate Shorter committee, said “We were very excited to see such a great show of support from faculty and students. We estimated between 150-200 people attended the event. The students selected to participate were outstanding! The Lord blessed Shorter with intelligent and gifted students, and Celebrate Shorter not only recognized the students, but also recognized what the Lord is doing at Shorter. God blessed this year’s event, and we look forward to what He will do at Celebrate Shorter 2018.”

he Shorter Chorale welcomed Dr. Aaron Rice, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choirs, as their new director this year. Rice and and the group had a very busy year. They performed at 17 different locations during the academic year, including churches, schools, events at Shorter, and concerts in both the spring and the fall. At each of their performances, the Chorale performed choral arrangements from various genres to both entertain and delight their audiences.

hen some people hear Shakespeare, they cringe at the thought of the writer’s ancient works and the archaic language. There was no question that performing Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” was hard work, but the audience loved this fall’s theatre production!

Shakespeare’s political thriller “Hamlet”, was performed in the Callaway Theatre September 22-24. The show had two sellout nights.

The plot followed Prince Hamlet, played by freshman Noah Hunt, and his spiral into madness as he sought revenge for his father’s murder, committed by his Uncle Claudius. This entertaining, well-rehearsed play was performed with great acting, dedication, and heart.

The cast of Shorter

University’s “Spitfire Grill” made a lasting impression on several members of its audience.

The musical was about a young girl named Percy who was just released from prison. She was arrested at the age of 16 for killing her stepfather, a man who sexually abused her, impregnated her, and beat her so badly she lost the baby. After her prison release, Percy traveled to Gilead, Wisconsin, and found work at the local Spitfire Grill.

Eventually, Percy’s positive influence caused people in the town to regain their love of Gilead. Overall, it was a story of redemption; not just of Percy, but also of those around her.

That story was particularly powerful for audience members from the Rome Hospitality House for Women.

Sue Gaukel, Assistant Professor of Music Theatre Direction, contacted the local women’s shelter as a way to reach out to the community.

“I wanted to do theater that mattered: that didn’t just entertain but actually reached people and helpd change lives,” Gaukel said.

talents to other people.Theater is the vehicle that we’ve been given to do that.”

The Hospitality House provided a free, safe place for victims of domestic violence to stay. It also helped get them back on their feet after they recovered. For the women who watched the play, Percy’s tragic tale of abuse was less of a story and more of a reality.

The

play was extremely successful, both with the cast and with the audience. For some in the audience, “Spitfire Grill” was the reality of their abusive past displayed with a powerful message of hope and redemption that helped make the play so touching.

Patience S

tudents and family members attended the outstanding performance of “Patience”, an opera performed by Shorter Opera Theatre students. It was a satiric commentary on the aesthetic movement of the 1800’s in which, Patience, a young woman, was torn between two lovers. She was forced to decide between loving a man for his appearance and social standing or loving a man for his character and compassion. Many of the other maidens in town were solely focused on men for their appearance and social standing instead of getting to know who the men really were. Dr. Tara Warfield, Assistant Professor of Music and Opera Director, said, “As these characters struggled through life, some recognized truth and honor, while others never saw past them.”

For some in the audience, “Patience” was the first opera they had ever attended. The opera was easy to follow, and each scene was easily understood. The audience was able to feel sympathy for some of the characters and dislike some of the less admirable ones. “Patience” touched the hearts of everyone in the audience with its array of characters and happy ending.

Sophomore Madison Hunt said, “I thought the best thing about the opera was its ability to reach an audience that otherwise wouldn’t enjoy opera!”

Ultimately, the opera showed that people’s aesthetics were not as important as their inner selves.

“ he Glass Menagerie “ was a story that spoke to the reality and hardship through an emotional script. With a cast of only five people, the play proved to be an impassioned one. The show was about a family in a poor city in 1937 trying to make ends meet. The mother raised her two adult children after the father left. The daughter, Laura, was shy, crippled, and unable to hold a job. Tom, the son, worked long days in a factory and spent most nights out.

The mother, a controlling and overeager woman, was interested in marrying Laura off. When Tom’s friend came to dinner, he spent a lot of time with Laura, even kissing

her, although he was engaged to another woman.

Laura was crushed when she found out, and her mother became angry at Tom for even inviting his friend. Tom, fed up with his mother’s controlling behavior, followed in his father’s footsteps and left the family.

The play tended to leave the audience in a somber and pensive mood.

Senior Daniel Farias, the lead actor, said, “It was a pleasure to be a part of this production.

Hopefully, our audience left the show with a new perspective on life. The cast hoped that the play was more than just a piece of entertainment, but that the storyline also changed lives.”

Cast member and freshman Noah Hunt also stated his joy with working on the play, “On the technical side, I enjoyed collecting the musical soundtrack for the show.

I was also delighted to support the principle characters in my unscripted role as the Fiddler in the Wings. The show definitely helped me learn to appreciate every detail put into creating a stage production,” he said. Overall, “The Glass Menagerie” was a success with both the audience and the cast members.

Mr. Clint Helms, Assistant Professor

of Biology and Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, always goes the extra mile to help his students and make their experience at Shorter outstanding!

Students love his teaching style, helpful attitude, and overall care for them. “Mr. Helms is a great professor! He knows how to teach the information in a way that’s easy for anyone to learn,” said junior nursing major Chanel Mosley. Other students comment that “Mr. Helms is always willing to help them no matter what.”

Helms is a proud Shorter alumnus where he received his undergraduate degree. He also holds a master’s degree from the University of Missisippi and is working towards a Ph.D. from Northcentral University. Helms teaches General Biology I & II, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, and Conservation Biology.
