As we enjoy the warmer spring weather, there is renewed energy throughout our community. I am always anxious to greet the warm weather and spend time outdoors on our trails after a long winter. While many of us are enjoying the extra daylight, our city staff have already been hard at work preparing for a vibrant season ahead.
Below is some of the work that our maintenance team worked on to transition from winter to spring.
When they weren’t clearing snow, the streets division trimmed trees, replaced street signs, and patched potholes. They were able to take advantage of the nicer weather and started street sweeping in early March.
Our utility division kept busy flushing manholes, televising the sanitary sewer system, and fixing water main breaks. Water main breaks typically occur because changing temps cause the ground to expand and contract, putting pressure on our water mains. Thankfully, our crews have new leak detection equipment that helped us find potential breaks.
The parks division got our park buildings ready for summer programs. This included waxing the floors, painting, and general maintenance. They even had the tennis and pickleball nets up in early March.
This spring also has me excited because two big park projects are wrapping up in time for the warm weather. Although it opened in December, we’ll be celebrating the grand opening of Bobby Theisen Park on May 2 from 9:30 am - noon. The celebration will include food trucks and family-friendly activities. Please come by and check out the new park building, playground, pickleball, basketball, and tennis courts.
The new playground at Shamrock Park will also open later this spring. This playground hasn’t been updated in over 20 years, so it was long overdue! The new playground includes a variety of play areas for kids of all ages to enjoy.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to our city staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes—from repairing water mains to prepping our park buildings—to ensure our community is ready for the season.
I hope to see you out enjoying our beautiful city on the trails, in the parks, or on our courts. Let’s make it a great spring!

Xcel Energy’s Renewable*Connect Flex program makes choosing clean energy easy, with no installation required.
Renewable*Connect Flex is a voluntary renewable subscription program for Xcel Energy customers that enables customers to easily source their electricity from a combination of wind and solar with no equipment or installations on your home needed — and it costs only a few extra dollars a month.

To get started, scan the QR code or go to xcelenergy.com/renewableconnect Homeowners, renters, and businesses can participate!

• Keep leaves and glass clippings out of the street
• Yard waste is a major source of pollution for our water bodies. Leaves and grass are full of phosphorus and when these materials wash down the storm drains and into water bodies, they lead to algal blooms, poor habitat, and bad odors. Bring it to a yard waste site, compost it, mulch it back into your yard, and help keep our water clean!
• Pick up after your pet
• Rain washes pet waste, and the bacteria from it, into storm drains which flow untreated into nearby water bodies. This leads to algal blooms and harmful bacteria in lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Remember to bring poop bags and dispose of pet waste in the trash.
• Water in the morning to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation
• Water deeply twice a week to promote a deeper root system
• Only water when needed
• Make sure to follow watering restrictions in effect from May 15 - September 15
• Water before 11am or after 5pm
• Homes with addresses that end in an odd number water on odd days
• Homes with addresses that end in an even number water on even days
Each year, the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee recognizes residents and businesses that have had a positive impact on our environment. The green community awards are given to those who improve water quality, install renewable energy, or use eco-friendly practices. Winners receive a small lawn stake and are recognized at a city council meeting in early fall.
Applications are available at shoreviewmn.gov and due by July 17. Questions? 651-490-4665.

LearningRx Shoreview is a brain-training center that supports children and adults with a variety of learning challenges. The learning center opened in 2017, but eight months ago Julie Keller and her family acquired the business. Julie and her son Evan hope to make a difference in our community.
Before LearningRx, Julie considered many types of small businesses. Because she has a background in education, LearningRX was a good fit. Julie serves as the center’s director while Evan serves as the operations and marketing director.
As a mother of two sons, Julie knows exactly how difficult it can be to navigate a complex education system. She knows how important it is to understand both what and how their students are learning. With her experience, Julie brings a personal and grounded touch to her work.
The learning center has a dedicated and talented team from the area. Many of their staff members are students and graduates from local universities. You can see the passion for teaching, kindness, and growth as they interact with their students.
LearningRx offers tutoring with both individualized support and brain training that focuses on building cognitive skills with students. They serve students with a variety of needs, from ADHD and dyslexia to math and reading struggles, to brain injuries. After graduating from LearningRX many have seen improvements in their cognitive abilities and in their general quality of life.
LearningRx is located in the Harbor Place Office Village at 500 Highway 96 West Suite 100.
If you would like to know more about the services provided at LearningRx Shoreview, please call them at (651) 287-1441 or visit their website: learningrx.com/shoreview/
