Planning to update or upgrade your lawn this summer? These popular projects can give your property’s appearance a boost and raise your home’s curb appeal. Each of these projects need a permit from the city before work begins. Grading & excavating Work to level your yard, re-landscape areas of your yard or any digging and disruption of the soil. Driveways Repaving or replacing driveways, including concrete, pavers, and blacktop. Porches & decks Building or replacing porches or decks on any side of the home. Fences & irrigation systems Installing these common lawn features requires a permit. Invisible fences and irrigation systems should be installed at least six feet away from the curb to avoid damage from street construction and maintenance work.
Questions about property maintenance standards? Reach community development at 651-490-4680 or communitydevelopment@shoreviewmn.gov.
Night to Unite August 3
Night to Unite will take place Tuesday, August 3 from 5 - 9 pm. Night to Unite is a fun and affordable way to promote policecommunity partnerships and help residents feel safer and more connected with their neighbors. Apply for a block party permit and city crews will drop off barricades before the party. Permits are available at shoreviewmn.gov/block-party-permits. Register your event with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office at ramseycountysheriff.us. The sheriff’s office, fire department, elected officials and other city staff will visit registered events! Contact the sheriff’s office at 651-266-9333 with questions. Reminder – barricades need signs to let drivers know a block party is taking place. Bands and loud music are not permitted at block parties.

Garage sales
Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind if you’re planning a garage sale this summer. • You can hold two garage sales each year at your home • Sales can last up to four days each • Two directional signs can be posted at major intersections
• Sale signs can’t block street signs • One six-foot by six-foot sign can be placed at your home on sale days only. Follow COVID-19 guidelines when holding or visiting garage sales.
Watering tips
Save water this summer while keeping your lawn healthy! Healthy lawns only need around two inches of water each week. That’s about 20 minutes of watering twice a week. Be sure to water before 11 am or after 5 pm.
Water quality report
Shoreview monitors city drinking water each year, as required by federal law. The results for 2020 show no contaminants detected. View the full report online at shoreviewmn.gov/water-quality-report. Contact Dan Curley, public works superintendent, at 651-490-4672 with questions.
Keep Shoreview’s water clean
You can help keep our water clean! Keep grass clippings and leaves out of the street and make sure dog waste gets picked up. Keeping these things out of our storm sewers keeps our water cleaner and healthier.

Green community awards
Residents and businesses are recognized each year with the green community awards from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Commission. Awards are given to those who take steps to improve water quality, install renewable energy, or use eco-friendly practices. Winners receive a small lawn stake and are recognized at a city council meeting.
Applications are available at shoreviewmn.gov and due by July 9. Questions? 651-490-4665.
Compost 101
Composting is one of the most important things we can do to help our environment.
Organic matter, like food scraps and yard waste, release gases when they decompose.
In a landfill this creates dangerous methane, a green house gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. When composted organic matter creates a rich fertilizer and no methane.
When we chose to compost, we save waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas, and improve soil quality. Adding compost to soil increases beneficial bacteria and fungi that support plant growth. If everyone in the United States composted all of their food waste it would have the same impact as removing 7.8 million cars from the road. Using compost to fertilize vegetable gardens, rain gardens, native trees, and shrubs increases our impact even more. Environmental sustainability starts with small changes at the local level. Eco-friendly behaviors in our city can have a big impact globally. Shoreview residents can pick up a free organics recycling starter kit at city hall. Food scraps can be dropped off at Ramsey County Yard Waste sites or dedicated organics sites. Visit ramseycounty.us/foodscraps to find the closest drop-off location. Meeting broadcast schedule

Furnishing the Lepak/Larson house
The Shoreview Historical Society is moving forward in furnishing the Lepak/Larson house as a 1930s farmhouse. The three rooms on the main level will be open to the public for events and tours at a future date. Here’s a glimpse of the interior at the present time.
Room #1
The kitchen features a stove, refrigerator, sink and table and chairs. There is also a walk-in pantry.
Room #2
This will be the reception area. The trunk would have been similar to one immigrants commonly used during their travels. Families kept them and used them for storage in their new homes. The Singer sewing machine was a necessary item as well.
Room #3
The parlor is furnished with a sofa, lamp, chair, washstand and clock.

SESCA
Happy Summer from the Shoreview-Einhausen Sister City Association! Even though our regular events are still on hold, we are exploring ideas on holding small events virtually this summer – and there are still ways to get your German ‘fix’ around town! Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter Restaurant in Stillwater will open their beer garden on June 5. Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery in Saint Paul has a beautiful biergarten with authentic German food options. The Germanic-American Institute in Saint Paul will hold their “Deutsche Tage” (German Days) Festival on Saturday, June 12 and Sunday June 13. The event is free with food, drink, and merchandise for sale. SESCA board members continue to stay in close contact with association counterparts in Einhausen, Germany. They are in talks about a potential visit in 2022. Stay tuned for more details, and how you can join in the fun while the visitors are here. As always, we invite anyone in the community to explore our group and activities. Find us at SESCA.org and on Facebook.
