Ramsey County residents can recycle computers, televisions, and cell phones for free, keeping toxic metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium out of the environment. All data from electronics dropped off at Repowered will be physically destroyed or electronically wiped.

Sustainability at the Slice

Food vendors at the Slice of Shoreview will use compostable or recyclable materials in 2024. Help reduce the amount of waste produced at the festival by throwing leftover food and other compostable materials in the green containers. This material will be composted at an industrial compost facility.

Volunteers also help visitors sort their waste. Call 651-490-4650 to sign up.

Night to Unite August 6

Night to Unite will take place Tuesday, August 6 from 5 - 9 pm.

• Apply for a block party permit and city crews will drop off barricades before the party. Permits are available at shoreviewmn.gov/block-party-permits.

• Register your event with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office at ramseycountysheriff.us. The sheriff’s office, fire department, elected officials and other city staff will visit registered events.

Hodgson Road Reconstruction

Ramsey County is continuing construction on Hodgson Road this year. Hodgson Road is only open to local traffic with through traffic directed to Rice Street. Work is estimated to be completed later this fall.

Project details can be found on the county’s current roadwork webpage.

Recycling Service Transition

The city’s contract with Eureka Recycling is ending this summer. Beginning July 1, Republic Services will be the city’s new recycling hauler.

Things to know:

• Your recycling will continue to be collected on the same day, but collection times may vary

• You will continue to use the same recycling cart

• Place carts at the curb (not in the street) by 7am on your collection day with the lid opening facing the street

• Collections on or after a holiday will be delayed one day

◇ Holidays remaining in 2024 are July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day

Construction Consultation

Are you looking to do a home project but not sure where to begin? The City of Shoreview offers free construction consultation where you can:

• get general project advice

• learn how to get bids for a project

• review of bids from contractors

Home Improvement Loans

Loan amounts from $2,000 - $50,000 are available with fixed below market rates and terms up to 15 years. Eligible improvements may include:

• remodeling

• additions

• repairs

• replacement

The project(s) must correct local or state code deficiencies, add value to the home, improve accessibility, and/or reduces long term energy costs.

Manufactured Home Improvement Loans

Loans up to $10,000 are available with below market rates and terms up to 10 years.

Eligible improvements include:

• repairs and replacements that will address code deficiencies

• improve the structural components of the unit (roof, exterior wall, floor trusses)

• energy related improvements.

**Qualifying households may be eligible to have no payments until the home is sold or they have occupied it for 10 years since the start of the project.

Down Payment Assistance (First-time Homebuyers)

Loans up to $30,000 or 5% of purchase price are available with fixed below market rates and terms up to 30 years. Single-family homes, townhomes, twin homes or duplexes, condominiums with a maximum purchase price of $425,000 are eligible.

**If you are below 80% area median income, you could qualify for the first $10,000 of the down payment assistance to be due upon sale.

Do I Need A Permit?

Planning to update or upgrade your lawn this summer? These popular projects can give your property’s appearance a boost and raise your home’s curb appeal. Each of these projects need a permit from the city before work begins.

Grading & excavating

Work to level your yard, re-landscape areas of your yard or any digging and disruption of the soil.

Driveways

Repaving or replacing driveways, including concrete, pavers, and blacktop.

Porches & decks

Building or replacing porches or decks on any side of the home.

Fences & irrigation systems

Installing these common lawn features requires a permit. Invisible fences and irrigation systems should be installed at least six feet away from the curb to avoid damage from street construction and maintenance work.

Accessory structures

Building or replacing any additional structures on the property. This includes sheds, built-in fire pits, garages, and gazebos.

OVERNIGHT & SPECIAL EVENT PARKING

Having out-of-town visitors or a large family gathering?

Overnight parking permits can be requested for up to seven days for a special event, guests, or construction.

Overnight parking is not otherwise permitted between 2 – 5 am on Shoreview streets.

GARAGE SALES

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind if you’re planning a garage sale this summer.

• You can hold two garage sales each year at your home

• Sales can last up to four days each

• Sales must be held between 7 am and 10 pm

• Signs cannot be larger than 12 square feet or be greater than 12 feet in height

Are you doing something in your yard that benefits pollinators and water quality? Let us know what it is and receive a free yard sign!

The city is promoting a variety of yard care practices to benefit water quality and pollinators. Try one or more of these: incorporate native plants, install a rain garden, seed lawn with fescues, plant a bee lawn, or mow only when needed.

Lawns to Legumes program

Interested in planting pollinator habitat? Apply for cost-share funding of up to $400 through Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. Applications are due May 15, 2024 for fall 2024 funding.

Water efficiency rebate program

Rebates are available for upgrading qualifying toilets and irrigation controllers!

Save money and water by upgrading to an efficient, WaterSense-certified toilet or smart irrigation controller.

• A WaterSense toilet can save about 13,000 gallons of water and $140 per year compared to an old, inefficient toilet.

• WaterSense smart irrigation controllers work based on weather conditions to water when needed and to reduce water wasted.

Only water when needed

• Water in the morning to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation

• Water deeply and twice a week to promote a deeper root system

• Make sure to follow watering restrictions in effect from May 15 - September 15

■ Homes with addresses that end in an odd number can water on odd days of the month.

■ Homes with addresses that end in an even number can water on even days of the month.

Did you know?

Pet waste can directly impact water quality. Dog waste that doesn’t get picked up and gets washed into lakes and ponds through stormwater runoff contributes to algal blooms, harmful bacteria, and poor habitat for aquatic animals.

Do you have an ash tree on your property?

Take action now - make a plan for removal of your ash tree if you have not been treating it. Property owners are asked to remove untreated ash trees on private property by the end of 2025.

Ash trees are being infested by emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive insect that attacks and kills ash trees native to Minnesota. Treatment with an insecticide trunk injection is effective when it is started early. Many trees that have not already been treated are too heavily infested for treatment.

Tips for hiring a tree care company

• Check the list of licensed tree companies shoreviewmn.gov/tree-trimmers

• Get more than one estimate from licensed companies

• Don’t pay for work in advance

• Ask about the company’s certifications and experience

• Make sure you understand what work is included in the estimate

• The city does not have funding to assist with tree removals on private property

Clean Energy Incentives

Are you considering purchasing an electric vehicle, upgrading to an energy efficient appliance, or installing solar panels? There are various state and federal incentives that make it easier to save money and energy, such as the Minnesota Electric Vehicle Rebate program that just launched in February of this year.

Shoreview Historical Society

The Shoreview Historical Society has chosen the Edward and Florence Lundberg Hoff family as the 2024 Heritage Family of the Year. The Lundberg family shares Shoreview history with the Gramse, Nord, Lundquist, and Holmberg families. The Lundberg farm was located on Victoria Street where St Odilia is today. Florence was involved in many Shoreview organizations and volunteered in senior citizen projects while being named Ramsey County Outstanding Citizen of the Year by then-governor Arne Carlson. Son Ken Hoff was the Vice President of the Shoreview Historical Society for many years. He helped spearhead the first tour of Shoreview by providing much of the historical data for south Shoreview.

This is an introductory class for those who have little or no knowledge of pickleball. Class covers the basic rules, primary skills, terminology, and etiquette.

Adapted Kickball League

The 1929 stock market crash wiped out many people’s savings. Our nation spiraled down into The Great Depression. Federal troops were sent to attack American WWI veterans. Join us for the third annual University of Minnesota Age-Friendly University Day. The event features a keynote presentation by Dr. John Brose, Associated Clinics of Psychology, talking how to combat social isolation. Followed by a panel discussion and various breakouts: ways to maintain engagement for healthy lives, disrupt aging, connecting with nature, and mindful movement and aging.

Also, learn how to attend classes at The U for free, and the opportunity to visit with over 20 exhibitors. Our mission is to provide inclusive swim lessons for everyone. Our fun and imaginative approach to lessons will help you create a lifelong love of swimming. Pick your best learning environment - group lessons or private lessons. Parent-to-instructor communication is key to successful lessons. Our instructors love to teach and receive ongoing training.

Swim lesson policies

• We do not provide make-up swim lessons for any classes.

• Participants will be emailed specific programs policies before the class starts.

Cancellation policies & fees

• $5 if you cancel at least one week before the class start date.

• $10 if you cancel within one week of the class start date.

• No refunds on or after the class start date.

A note about swim lessons

• Due to high demand, private lessons are limited to 2 sessions per participant, per session.

• Swim lessons are not canceled if Mounds View School District cancels after school activities due to weather.

Little Strikers Bowling Camp

Come and learn the basics of bowling. Kids get shoes, lunch, and instruction. As a bonus, campers get to experience Bowlopolis, an animated bowling city. Wear or bring socks. Playball! MN Twins Baseball Clinic

This clinic teaches basic fundamentals, including hitting, throwing, and defense in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. Instruction is provided by qualified coaches. The Twins Community Fund provides all of the equipment for the clinic. Players will be broken up by age. Registration will be done through the Twins website at the start of summer.

Skyhawks STEM Sports Camps

Designed to pair strategic STEM-based activities with essential gameplay and current hot topics. STEM Sports gives students the opportunity to get behind the sport they love with lessons centered around the transformation and technology of the sport.

Green and white boys basketball camps

These camps focus on fundamentals by using age-appropriate drills, games, and contests. Participants receive a t-shirt. Camp is coached by Mounds View coach, Dave Leiser. Register based on the child's grade for the 2024-25 school year.

Green and White Girls Volleyball Camps

Come join local high school coach Tom Weko for two weeks of learning the game of volleyball. Players will be grouped by grade and playing ability with a maximum 8:1 player to coach ratio. Fundamental skills will be taught based on age and ability. Current high school, as well as former and current college players, will help provide instruction each day. Contests and games will be held daily. Participants should bring knee pads, wide wristbands (optional), a water bottle, and a great attitude. Participants will receive a t-shirt. Register based on the child's grade for the 2024-25 school year.

SPORTS UNLIMITED

These camps provide fundamental skill development with an emphasis on fun! Players learn the core skills and techniques used in each sport and then practice these skills in a number of games and scrimmages. All campers receive quality instruction, a water bottle and a sportsmanship award.

Private & Semi Private Tennis Lessons

Personalized high-quality tennis instruction for players who want to improve their court game. Our instructors will help you work on your groundstrokes, serves, volleys, lobs, and smashes in an individual setting. This program offers one-on-one tennis instruction for the casual or avid tennis player. Semi-private lessons are for two participants of equivalent ability. Participants must enroll with a partner for semi-private lessons. Each participant pays a registration fee.

Group Tennis Lessons

Pee Wees | Ages 5 to 7

Includes lessons on the basics of tennis. Low compression tennis balls provided. Participants should bring a junior sized racquet.

Beginners | Ages 7 to 11

For players with little or no tennis experience. Instruction focuses on grip, rules, and fundamental strokes.

Advanced beginners | Ages 9 to 11

Perfect for the player who has taken lessons, but needs stroke and technique improvement. Instruction focuses on stroke consistency and introduces new strokes.

Intermediate | Ages 11 to 14

For players with dependable strokes who have completed an advanced beginner class. Instruction focuses on court coverage, game strategy, stroke use, and much more.

Fall Co-Rec Soccer Leagues

The coach will send a detailed schedule one week before the program starts. Practices will be one hour each week at either 6 or 7 pm with Saturday morning games. If there are any days your child can’t practice during the week, please include that with their registration.
