A NEW LOOK FOR SHOREVIEW The City of Shoreview takes great pride in its reputation as a welcoming and vibrant community set within a natural landscape. Now, we have a new look to match. On Monday, October 7, the city council accepted and rolled out a new city logo and brand. The logo, designed by Peters Design Company, represents the natural landscape within the city featuring trees and water. While the new logo has a modern design, it has a timeless quality that was influenced by the city’s previous looks. It can also be used across a number of design platforms. “We are excited to reveal the refreshed look for the city as we get ready to move into a new decade,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “The new brand will improve the city’s visibility and allow us to effectively communicate with our residents and visitors.” The updated look is part of the city’s strategic communication plan that was approved earlier this year. Through the new logo design, the city will be able to clearly and consistently promote Shoreview as a great

place to live, work, and play, both now and into the future. Additionally, the new brand will make it easier for staff to develop effective communications across all city departments. The city will be rolling out the new logo in multiple phases. The first phase will take place immediately and includes the city’s print and digital media such as ShoreViews newsletter, website, and social media. In 2020, you will begin to see the new logo on uniforms and marketing materials. Larger items such as water towers, park signs, street signs, and vehicles, will be done as part of future maintenance or replacement. Website In addition to the new logo, the city is also working to update its website. The new website will launch in early 2020 and follows the new brand standards for the city. Through the redesign, the city is also bringing the community center’s website into the city’s website. More information on the redesign will be available in early 2020.

2020 budget & tax levy hearing

Rental licenses

Shoreview’s proposed property tax levy for 2020 is $12,819,826 represents a 5.45% increase over the 2019 levy. All rental licenses in Shoreview expire on December 31 and applications for a new license must be submitted before January 1. 2019 Green Community Award winners recognized Two Shoreview schools are the winners of this year’s Shoreview Green Community Awards. Oak Hill Montessori Oak Hill Montessori developed environmentally-based projects and procedures that fit their mission to prepare students for global citizenship by empowering and inspiring children to become passionate learners and independent thinkers. After the school received a grant from BizRecycling, they implemented a schoolwide waste reduction program. All students learned about proper recycling sorting, while older students were tasked with collecting the recycling. The elementary students were inspired to create posters and sponsor a “plastics free” day for themselves and their families. The school grounds are home to multiple pollinator gardens, with the newest feature – a growing dome. The 18-foot structure has solar powered air and water circulation systems. The vegetables grown will be shared with community members and the Ralph Reeder food shelf. An aquaculture system will be added to the dome as well.

Lionsgate Academy Lionsgate recently expanded and moved into an old call center building in an area full of big commercial buildings and asphalt parking lots. They have transformed the building and grounds to create a space that benefits the school and the local area – all part of their mission pillar of collaboration with the community. First, they solicited and re-used approximately $1 million worth of office furniture, equipment and carpet from organizations that no longer needed the items – saving them from ending up in the trash. Next, they worked with the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District, Ramsey County Parks & Recreation and Soil & Water Conservation Division, and several master gardeners to redevelop 16,300 square feet of parking lot. Instead of cold asphalt, there is now a 2,000 square-foot rain garden to capture storm water from the parking lot, and an inviting 14,300 square foot play field and pollinator garden. Lionsgate Academy science students worked with the master gardeners to select plants for the rain garden and even helped with the planting.

WINTER WEATHER GUIDE FO R H OMEO W NERS

Cold, dark and snowy – being a homeowner in winter can be a challenge. Use these helpful tips to keep your home comfortable. Snow smart Ready to shovel? Keep these tips in mind after a snowfall: • Clear snow from your driveway, private sidewalk and mailbox area • Shovel snow onto your lawn – not into the street •P lows work overnight and during the day – don’t park on the street until it’s been cleared from curb to curb • Shovel around the nearest fire hydrant and storm sewer • Street parking is not permitted from 2 - 5 am year-round • L imit your use of salt – just a teaspoon of road salt can pollute up to five gallons of water. Use salt sparingly and only when the temperature is above 15 degrees. Sweep up any excess before it’s washed into the storm sewers. Home & hearth • L ock windows, keep curtains open during the day and closed at night, and close fireplace dampers to keep warm air in and cold air out • S et your thermostat lower when you’re not home or invest in a smart thermostat that can be set remotely with a smart phone. •U se a roof rake to remove snow from your roof and help prevent ice dams. Ice dams can cause leaks and extensive damage that is expensive to repair. •C onsider wifi-connected outlets or using timers for lights inside and outside.

FOR THE HOLIDAY S The holiday season is full of joy, family, food and more. Unfortunately, the season also generates a lot of waste. Lighten the load with these helpful tips. Reduce Americans typically produce 7.5 pounds of trash every day during the holidays. Make small changes to reduce your impact! Wrapping paper • Most wrapping paper isn’t recyclable. Try using gift bags, brown paper, newspaper, or a scarf to wrap gifts in a creative way. Gifts • Consider gifts that offer an experience like tickets to a concert or game, a membership to a museum, or giftcards for music downloads, restaurants, or movies. • Handmade gifts like cookies & breads, or handmade mittens & scarves offer a personal touch. • Traditional stocking stuffers including oranges and pears are sweet treats that won’t leave a trail of trash. • Help a friend or family member trying to lessen their impact with a gift of reusable items like beeswax wrap for food storage or cloth produce bags. NYFS offers help for seniors; jobs for teens and adults Shoreview residents age 60+ can sign up for convenient and affordable snow shoveling help through Northeast Youth & Family Services. NYFS is also looking for teens and young adults age 14+ who are willing to help seniors keep their driveways and walkways clear. Qualified applicants can earn up to $15 per hour as independent contractors.

NYFS is a non-profit mental health and community services agency based in the northern suburbs. NYFS helps seniors with indoor and outdoor chores while providing work opportunities for youth and adults. Rates are affordable and a sliding-fee scale is offered to low-income seniors. Only you can prevent oak wilt Oak trees in Shoreview are at high risk for oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills a large number of trees every year. You can help stop the spread of oak wilt by trimming oak trees during winter months when the disease is dormant. When to prune and trim: November - March Sap beetles transfer fungal spores between oak trees and are strongly attracted to oak tree wounds, like those caused by trimming. Oak wilt can also spread through root grafts to neighboring trees. Visit shoreviewmn.gov/trees to learn more about oak wilt and find a list of licensed tree trimmers.

Guerin Gas Station On the southeast side of the Lepak/Larson house on the corner of County Road I & Lexington sits the restored Guerin Gas Station – these structures are both part of the Shoreview’s newly created Heritage Park. The gas station, moved from the northwest corner of Rice Street and North Owasso Blvd, has a storied past. Following is an excerpt from the book Shoreview Reflections, written by John Koblas. “Roy Guerin assumed ownership of his father’s Texaco gas station in 1938 and operated it for the next forty years. His father, Dave Guerin, operated the station, as well as an adjacent grocery store from 1923-1938. While running the station for two generations, Roy Guerin sold chicken lunches for thirty-five cents and nickel beer during the 1930s in addition to providing full service at the pumps. Among his customers were houseguests of Louis Hill, son of railroad baron James J. Hill at North Oaks. He also recalled pumping gas for some of the FBI’s Most Wanted, who used the area for their temporary homes.” Shoreview Reflections is available for $10 softcover and $20 hardcover at Shoreview City Hall.

Thanksgiving for All Project helps fill empty plates during the holidays Each November, the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf provides Thanksgiving Bags to nearly 800 families in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. Despite a healthy economy, food shelves across the state still see record levels of need and during the holidays requests for food and other resources skyrocket. The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf works hard, with help from the community, to ensure that everyone has enough food to prepare a delicious Thanksgiving to share with their loved ones. You can help fill a Thanksgiving table for a family in need! A resident is defined as an individual whose legal residential address is within the City of Shoreview. Total fee must be paid at time of registration. Registrations are not accepted at program site. We reserve the right to cancel programs if needed. Full refunds will be issued if a class is cancelled by the City. Cancellations made by Parks & Rec will be sent via e-mail, phone call or text message. Credits will be put on the household account or back on the credit card from the original transaction. Waiting lists will be started if classes fill. Additional or expanded classes may be formed if possible. A receipt may be emailed as confirmation. Further confirmations will not be sent. When registering by phone, you are officially agreeing to the liability and photo waivers stated on the registration form.

Yin/Restorative Yoga

This grounding practice will provide fewer postures which you will hold for longer periods of time, allowing you to focus on breathing into the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the joints in the body.

Yoga Basics

This class is based on physical postures (asanas), deep breathing, mindfulness and listening to the body. A slower paced class that focuses on fundamental postures. Great class for beginners or for one seeking a modified (gentle) yoga class option.

Yoga/Pilates Fusion

Hatha Yoga

Yoga Sculpt

Yoga sculpt is the fusion of vinyasa yoga and strength endurance training. This unique and intense workout incorporates hand weights and is designed to tone and shape your body. Build stamina through a series of squats, lunges, crunches, plank holds, cardio work, balancing postures, and stretching.

Heated Yoga

Hot Yoga is an intense practice that will move you through powerful and aggressive postures and/or series. This practice is meant to detoxify the body, build strength and burn calories through movement, breath, and heat. Designed for intermediate to advanced levels. Class temp range is 80-90 degrees.

Power Yoga

Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. Participants will build strength, flexibility and concentration while cleansing the body and calming the mind.

Power Strength

The first 60% of the class is cardio which will be either high/low impact cardio, step or kickboxing or dance followed by the remaining 40% of class time to execute effective resistance exercises.

In each energizing and targeted workout, you’ll use the barre and exercise equipment such as mini-balls and small hand weights to sculpt, slim and stretch your entire body.

Cardio Kickboxing

A dynamic and energetic class that combines kicks, punches and blocks. This athletic based class is easy to follow but provides a hard/challenging workout.

Cycle Rave

We pedal to the music and that’s it! Experience a fun, crazy party on your bike! You will be amazed at the workout you will get.

Power Pump is strictly a weight training class using free weights and dumbbells. This class uses different tempos for reps, higher repetitions and supersets to help build lean muscle tissue, strength and muscular endurance.

Power strength is strictly a weightlifting class using barbells and dumbbells. This workout is designed to build muscle mass and strength. Focusing on technique, the exercises are done in multiple sets with lower repetitions so that more weight can be used/added.

The Resistance Workout

This class is strictly strength training exercises using various pieces of equipment and/or your own body weight. Class focuses on all major muscle groups with some added attention to detail (form/ feel). Progressions can include compound exercises and functional (balance) exercises.

Let’s get funky! Dance your heart out while getting an amazing workout.

Warm up with basic step moves and then learn fun choreographed patterns, combinations and movements on an adjustable step.

Okay dancers, here you go! In this choreographed class you will learn one awesome dance routine. You will be amazed at the great workout while you get your “groove” on! All fitness levels welcome.

Total Body Workout

Fundamental Combo

This class incorporates low impact cardio followed by basic strength training exercises.

This workout incorporates exercises designed to enhance your agility, speed, power, strength and quickness. Equipment used may include weights, TRX (suspension training), kettlebells, bands, benches, bosus, cycles and mat works. The class will also elevate your heart rate as you are challenged with drills in either circuits and/or a stand-alone station.

H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training)

Zumba®

This class showcases interval training, intervals of extreme cardio and/or resistance exercises for a designated amount of time followed by a short recovery period.

Kettlebell Training

This class fuses exercises using kettlebells and conditioning drills to provide a total body workout that will leave you feeling strong!

Grooving to the beats like salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, hip hop and meringue, music feels more like a dance party than a workout, which is exactly what makes Zumba so popular! The Latin-inspired and World-inspired dance workout is one of the most popular group exercise classes around. You don’t need to be a great dancer to feel welcome in a Zumba class. Our preschool program offers students a variety of fun and educational activities designed to stimulate their social and intellectual development as they move along the road to Kindergarten. Our unique location at the Shoreview Community Center allows for several one-of-a-kind opportunities that you won’t find at other preschools. Tae Kwon Do

Tumbling Children will discover the sport of tumbling within a positive, educational atmosphere. Participants will learn basic skills on floor, balance beam, bars, and vault. Along with athletics, participants will learn self-discipline and have fun. Due to space limitations, we are unable to provide an observation area; parents are invited to observe the final class. Tae Kwon Do emphasizes both physical and mental discipline unlike any other martial arts program. Classes will teach kicking, punching, striking, and blocking techniques through the philosophy and discipline of traditional Tae Kwon Do. While learning self defense, you will develop both physically and mentally. You will improve your stamina, strength, speed, agility, coordination, flexibility, balance, reflexes, concentration and confidence. Classes are taught by certified instructors of Sun Yiâ€™s Academy of Traditional Tae Kwon Do. Recreational Ice Skating Instruction Group Lessons

Get an edge on winter fun by enrolling in ice skating lessons early.

Pre-Snowplow: Ages 4-8

With a mix of fun games and drills, this class will help participants gain the strength and confidence to stand on their own on the ice while introducing preliminary skating moves and techniques.

Snowplow Sam: Ages 4-10

Participants will learn to skate in a safe and fun environment. This class introduces preliminary moves that will help develop the familiarity, coordination and strength needed to maneuver on skates.

Helpful Tips for Skaters: Lace skates more snugly in the middle of the shoe than at the top or bottom for best support. Skates should fit correctly – don’t use skates that are too big. Keep the blades sharp. Wear one pair of light-weight wool or synthetic socks. Cotton socks are not suitable for skating. If a child does not meet the basic requirements of the level registered for, it is at the discretion of the instructor to adjust the child’s level. Helmets: For safety, all participants are required to wear helmets. Bike helmets are acceptable. (Helmets not provided.)

Our leveled classes encourage participants to trade in hesitation for excitement as their confidence grows with each stride. Participants will focus on skills that build their agility, balance, coordination and speed.
