Dear Whitetail Club Members,

I can speak confidently for the entire Whitetail Club Team that we are all eagerly awaiting the opportunity to welcome the entire membership back to our summer amenities.

Though we set tentative dates that we aggressively work towards hitting each year, there is always a chance of a delay. This year is no exception. Please stay tuned to your weekly communications for updates. Sunshine is in the forecast, and the team is giving it everything they’ve got to meet opening dates.

As mentioned, we will no longer provide single-use plastic water bottles at the golf course or the marina. To help ease this transition, we will install additional fill stations at The Golf Shop, Driving Range and additional water stations on the docks. Each membership will be gifted two reusable high-quality water bottles to utilize when enjoying these club amenities. More will be available for purchase, should you like to, at both The Golf Shop and The Boathouse. We will be reaching out via email in the coming weeks on where you can pick yours up.

As a reminder, this past holiday season, each membership received two complimentary guest rounds and drinks on us. Contact The Golf Shop directly to redeem your guest rounds and reference this holiday offering. The round of drinks will be accomplished by way of a credit that you will see referenced on your May statements.

As expected, with a long winter like what we experienced this year, a lengthy list of spring projects needs to be tackled. If any project scheduled has the chance of disrupting your experience while at Whitetail Club, we’ll do our best to include these in your weekly communications. As you plan your time at the club, please reference the ‘take note’ section of our Tuesday eblasts.

We’ve got a handful of fantastic events in the not-too-distant future. If all goes as planned, our kick-off to the 2023 golf season is on Saturday, May 27, with our Season Opening Tournament, followed by a Member Mixer. On June 3, we have our first Members Only Wine Dinner of the summer season, featuring wines from the Kermit Lynch Portfolio. On June 10, we’ll host our annual Whitetail Pickleball Tournament, and on June 17, we added a spring Progressive Dinner to complement our fall event. This time, we’ll visit three homes outside the Whitetail Club gates and throughout the McCall community. I’m so excited! Thank you in advance to our members who agreed to host a course. These events are sure to fill up quickly, a reminder that it’s never too early to confirm participation.

Starting with this edition of the Trailblazer and continuing on a seasonal basis, we’ll incorporate an Employee Spotlight into our editorial content. We have so many talented individuals working behind the scenes that create the Whitetail Club experience, and undoubtedly they deserve an introduction to the membership. I’m thrilled to formally introduce you to Nancy Cienfuegos, Greenskeeper and Assistant Superintendent in Training.

S WE AWAIT SPRING’S SNOWMELT TO REVEAL VIBRANT GREEN GRASS , we’re looking forward to the opening of the Whitetail Club golf course! The season ahead promises to have highly anticipated tournaments and programs, as well as some positive additions and many familiar team members back on the course. These pages are dedicated to everything golf for the 2023 season, including a Tee Time note from our new Head Golf Professional, Phil Goodson, and an interview with Nancy Cienfuegos, a Turf Team Member that’s been with us for five years.

With the reopening on the horizon, you can now claim your holiday gift! As a reminder, each membership was gifted two complimentary guest rounds of golf and a round of drinks at The Golf Grille. To take advantage of the complimentary rounds of golf, reference this ‘holiday gift’ when booking your tee time at The Golf Shop. A credit will be placed on your account in the amount of $100 for the round of drinks for you and your guests. Cheers! Please note that the gift is valid through the 2023 golf season.

Save the date for the 2023 Season Opening Tournament on May 27 for a 1pm shotgun. Win from a cash pool with your four-player team that can consist of members and/or guests. Don’t have a team? No worries! The Golf Staff will pair you to ensure you get to tune in on all the fun. After a day of play, stop by The Golf Grille as we announce the winners during our Member Mixer. RSVP by May 23.

Tee Time

Welcome to the 2023 golf season at Whitetail Club! Or should I say the pre-season? Old Man Winter has strengthened his grip leading to spring days that, at times, more resemble Mid-January. As beautiful as the winters are in Valley County, I believe I speak for the majority when I say, “Let’s get to the big melt!”

While the snow sticks become more visible, the Whitetail Club golf department is preparing for an opening month to serve as the proverbial kick-off to our beloved summer in McCall! Kevin, Diana, Anna, and I are all preparing the golf department for another stellar season. We look forward to reconnecting with our returning team members and are excited to welcome our newest colleagues to the Whitetail Club Family!

We are pleased to announce our first month of golf will have a handful of events wedged into it that will concentrate on dusting off the clubs and diving into the season!

To remain pragmatic, we must remind everyone these dates are tentative with the current snowpack. Our amazing agronomy and maintenance teams have been working diligently to prepare the golf course. And rest assured, as the birdsongs become more prevalent, the green grass will return!

going GREEN

We’re thrilled to announce a new initiative we’re implementing at Whitetail Club to reduce our carbon footprint! Starting this summer, we will no longer offer single-use plastic water bottles on the golf course and the marina. Instead, in addition to the fill stations found on holes #4 and #14, we’ll be adding a fill station at The Golf Shop, The Cart Barn, and the marina. As we adjust to this new tradition, we’ll gift each membership two stainless steel, vacuum-insulated, double-walled water bottles. Stay tuned for upcoming club communications to learn more about how you can pick up your water bottles.

Team Member Spotlight

Meet Nancy Cienfuegos

As we prepare to re-open the Whitetail Club Golf Course, it seems fitting that we spotlight one of the many individuals who help maintain our beautifully manicured course. Meet Nancy Cienfuegos, recognized as a leading woman on the course and Whitetail Club’s Greenskeeper AIT (Assistant in Training).

Born in Idaho and raised in Mexico, Cienfuegos returned to the U.S. in 2012 and graduated high school right here in McCall in 2016. Her father, having had a long tenure with the club, encouraged her to join the turf team considering Nancy’s preference to work outdoors. Nancy successfully nailed her interview with Superintendent Adam Lott. With the continued support and mentorship of Whitetail Club’s Assistant Superintendent, Nick Korthals, Nancy began her career after graduation, and her passion for turf slowly grew to fruition. After mastering bunkers, rough, fairways, and tees, her supervisors felt that the only logical step would be to train Nancy on the greens, arguably the most criticized, or hopefully praised part of a golfers experience.

Taking pride in her work and striving for mastery, Cienfuegos completed the Great Lake School of Turfgrass Science—a twelve-week program covering twelve separate PHDs, including soils, herbicides, cultural practices, and so much more!

As one of the many women breaking barriers in this profession, Nancy was invited to sit on the board of the Women in Turfgrass organization. The sole purpose of this organization is to advance opportunities for women to grow within the turfgrass industry. Through her ties to this organization, Cienfuegos worked at the 2022 Women’s U.S. Open at Pine Needles Golf Club in North Carolina, the Ladies U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay in Washington, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, and will be headed to North Carolina this summer for the Little League Softball World Series.

Nancy’s goal is to attend school for Turf Management this winter. Excited to embark on this new opportunity, we can’t wait to see Nancy continue prospering in her career. We’re honored to have her a part of the Whitetail Club Team!

Ignited with a fire to succeed (as her name suggests ‘100 fires’ or, as her friends like to refer to her ‘1,000 fires’ because she’s so good at what she does), Nancy was willing to put in the work and face the challenge straight on. “Greens are a representation of you,” cites Nancy as she talks about meticulously watching her lines on the course.
