Director’s Note

Dear Whitetail Club Members,

As we head into my favorite time of year in McCall, it’s lovely to see so many members still enjoying the Whitetail Club amenities. Because of this noticeable increase in patronage, we will be keeping the clubhouse restaurant open 7 days a week until October 11th. At that time, we’ll reevaluate our hours of operation and adjust if necessary. A reminder that reservations are always recommended, especially as the evenings cool, and indoor dining becomes more appealing. Dean, Chef Marcus, and the rest of our fantastic food & beverage team will be looking forward to seeing you. For other hours of operation, please refer to page 14 of this issue of the Trailblazer.

The membership & real estate teams continue to be busy, and we’re thrilled to have welcomed 5 new families to Whitetail Club this past month. To Jon & Andrea Archer, Bob & Tamera Wheeler, Ian & Sarah Pennell, Matt & Stacy Sericati, and Bill & Alli Kearns thank you for choosing Whitetail Club. As I’ve always said, September is the best time to be in McCall. I look forward to seeing you. A reminder to our Golfers that the course will be closed for aerification September 15th & 16th. Thank you for an outstanding summer. More to come,

End of summer sales are in full effect. Head to the Boathouse & C-Store for deals on your favorite Whitetail logo’d gear and keep an eye out for upcoming deals at the golf shop. We continue to see side-by-sides, scooters, razors, etc. driving at excessive speeds, most noticeably on the paved paths in and around the tunnels of our Shore Lodge Cottages neighborhood. A reminder that those paths are used for hikers, bikers, and joggers as well. Please adhere to posted MPH signs and always be cautious and aware of who you may be sharing the paths with.

2020 has been a truly unique year, and back to school time is no exception. As we roll into the end of summer and beginning of fall, we are all feeling a strong desire to learn more and do more in so many ways. Whitetail Club wants to nurture that love of learning and inspire you to start trying something new, now – less time spent wondering and more time spent doing. Let’s make a commitment, as a family, a couple, or a club, to seize every day for the rest of 2020, by taking up new skills and hobbies. Skills that will help you grow and hobbies that will change you into next year’s you. We put together a list, suitable for all ages, to spark inspiration. Reclaim the rest of your year!

GO THE DISTANCE

MASTER THE GRILL

Did you know you can train for a 5k in 9 weeks? And since there are 16 weeks left in the year, you can be well on your way to run a 10k by 2021! All you will need are good running shoes, dedication, and a bit of scheduling. With apps like Couch to 5k™, you can listen to your favorite songs while an endurance timer and virtual coach let you know when to run and when to walk! Whitetail Club’s endless trails are a great asset to the runner in you.

Whitetail Club has you covered on this one! On September 12th Chef will go over some of the grilling basics you may already know and provide tips for you to impress everyone at your next cookout. You’ll work through a variety of dishes from appetizers to dessert, before enjoying your culinary creation with a beverage pairing!

UP YOUR GAME

TEST YOR LIMITS

The Studio is now open and ready for golfers of all ages to come to learn the basics or perfect their game. Golf is an excellent sport to teach kids and if you are looking for a great afterschool activity, a lesson at The Studio could be the perfect place.

McCall and the surrounding area are home to some of the most beautiful mountains with spectacular trails. We have listed some challenging trails on page 10 & 11 that will be sure to test your limits and take you to new heights.

GET STRONGER

LEARN A LANGUAGE

Simple 5 lbs weights, resistance bands, and some cardio – that’s all you need to slowly get your body into shape by the end of the year. Dedicate a couple of days of the week to different muscle groups and challenge your body in comfortable ways to ensure you don’t injure yourself. Whitetail Club’s Fitness Center boasts brand new workout machines and equipment to facilitate your fitness journey! Start slow, and before you know it, you’ll see and feel the difference.

This one is a commitment, but according to the US Foreign Service Institute, it takes 480 hours to master fluency in German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and a few other languages. That means if you dedicate 3 hours every day to studying one of these languages, you could reach basic fluency by 2021.

MAKE MUSIC

DEVELOP A GREEN THUMB

Once you get the basics, nothing can stop you. If you practice guitar or piano for one hour every day, you can play hundreds of songs by the end of the year. Research shows that after 130 hours of learning to plan an instrument, you can get the basics of technical skills and musical science to apply to other instruments.

The #1 hobby of 2020 is collecting indoor plants. Ranging from easy-to-care-for plants, to rare tropicals, local greenhouses and internet sellers are loaded with beautiful specimens for your home. Create the right conditions, and your new babies will thrive and grow beautifully throughout the year. The growth in your home will be a sight to see.

Tee time

What a fantastic August we had given our tournament schedule changes. We held our first MemberMember tournament. The Whitetail Cup had a new format, and it was a huge success. Members pick their partner, and we played two days of competitive golf with 84 total players. The men’s format was one BB on the odd holes & both balls count on the even holes and then reversed on Sunday. The ladies’ format was one best ball each day. The ladies’ champions were Cheri Moore & Nichol Black, and the men’s gross champions were Patrick & Connor Mahoney. The net champions were DH Moss & Whitey Baird. Congratulations to all our winners and the field!

Taking home the title after that evening was Mills Sinclair, Miki Edwards, Bev & Whitey Baird. As we look forward to September, Saturday the 5th, we will have the annual Monster Golf Day. I hope to see you.

I would also like to give a big thank you to Derek & Cheri Moore for their kind donation to the Whitetail Cup of the winner’s trophies. Very nice! All the champions were pleased to receive the spectacular awards. Next year look for this tournament to be held around the third weekend of July and moving the Club Championship to mid-August.

Respectfully,

The golf course Aerifiying is scheduled for Tuesday & Wednesday the 15th & 16th. Although the golf course will be closed those two days, the driving range will remain open each day from 9 – 5. Thank you for all your participation in the tournaments and weekly events. It was a wonderful month. Please let me know if I can be of any help to you or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

August 9&Dine was held on Saturday the 15th. We had another awesome field with 56 players, and we had dinner outside the new cart barn. Chef Marcus prepared another tremendous dinner, and everyone had a wonderful evening.

Season’s Journey

The end of summer and beginning of fall is a season in and of itself. That streak of breezy days and brisk nights is short-lived but unmistakable, and it’s an ideal time for a hike. In anticipation of the changing seasons, we’ve compiled a set of local trails fit for varied skill levels. Keep these hikes in mind when planning your next adventures!

10.

Goose Creek Falls Easy 3.1 miles | elev. gain 685 ft | est. 1h 40m This dog-friendly hike boasts a shady downhill trail that leads to Goose Creek Bridge and spectacular waterfall views! Coming in at just over 3 miles roundtrip, the hike to Goose Creek Falls is suitable for all skill levels, including kids. But it’s important to keep in mind that the way back up the mountains is steep, so be sure to bring plenty of water and have your camera ready because this scenic trail is best enjoyed slowly and steadily.

Snowslide Lake Moderate 3.5 miles | elev. gain 1,328 ft | est. 2h 18m Rated one of the best trails in McCall, the Snowslide Lake Trail is fun and energizing a steep and moderately shady hike leading to a cold and snowy lake at the top of the trail! With a substantial elevation gain and rugged terrain, we recommend this trail for hikers that are comfortable crossing multiple creeks and ready for long uphill climbs. Be prepared for water splashes and mud tracks when hitting this trail!

Hard Creek Falls Challenging 6.9 miles | elev. gain 833 ft | est. 3h 20m Often overlooked, the trail to Hard Creek Falls is the hike for locals searching for an uncharted adventure. This old jeep trail runs above Hard Creek for 3 miles and is home to a multitude of wildflowers and wildlife – be sure to bring bugspray and be aware of your surroundings. Once you cross two bridges and over a fallen tree you’ll reach the double staircase falls where a small path that takes you down to the creek. What’s more, those with a trained eye can hand-pick gems like citrine, jasper, and petrified wood littered along the first miles of this trail.
