Director’s Note
Dear Whitetail Club Members,
Fall is in the air and there isn’t a more perfect time to be here in McCall. The MTB trails seem to always be at their best in October. We’ve seen some recent precipitation which has helped transition the trails from a bit dusty and dirty to an optimal tacky and hardpack. On top of that, the golf course is recovering well from our recent aerification and with lots of sunshine in the forecast, now is the time to get out and enjoy these amenities. A reminder that clubhouse restaurant will remain open 7 days a week through October 11th which at that point hours of operation will go to Thursday - Sunday, serving all meal periods. Don’t forget to make your reservations. As the nights get cooler you can plan on indoor dining becoming more appealing. We’ve also just added the NFL ticket. Plan to head to the club to watch your favorite team hit the gridiron. Jerseys are welcome. We’ve welcomed a new concierge to the Whitetail Club team, please help me in welcoming Danielle Mathis to the family. Hailing from the Sunshine State, Danielle (along with her cat, Andy) have moved to Idaho to begin what I have no doubt will be an exciting new chapter for us all. Please feel free to reach out directly to Danielle at 208.630.0245 or dmathis@whitetailclub.com, she’ll look forward to working with you.
an anonymous manner. A long answer short, we’re in. We will be utilizing a third party to facilitate the creation and the implementation of the survey. Stay tuned to your weekly and monthly club communications for updates on when you can expect to see this member survey in your inbox. The end of season sale is in full swing at the Golf Shop. Plan to stop by before it’s too late to stock up on your Whitetail logo’d apparel. Our end of season fall classic is scheduled for October 10th. Make sure to sign up with Eugene and the team for our last tournament of the season. Plan on sticking around for our end of golf season member mixer. We’ll be hosting appetizers and a signature drink. A full bar will be available for member charge. The membership and real estate offices continue to stay steady as we head into fall. This past month I’m incredibly excited that we welcomed three new families to Whitetail Club. Thank you to Doug & Kelli York, Jake & Michaela Centers & John & Melissa Michiels for opting to make Whitetail Club apart of your lives.
Enjoy the season and thank you,
As the summer season has come to an end, many members have taken it upon themselves to reach out to me with thoughts, ideas, reviews and constructive feedback. Thank you to all that have taken the time to do so. It is appreciated and we recognize that your feedback is pivotal to how we evolve and improve the Whitetail Club experience. On this same note of feedback, it has been requested that we implement a member survey. An opportunity for our members to express their thoughts, whether good, bad or indifferent, but be able to do so in 3.
~ LOCAL SPOTS WIT H A SPOOK Y HISTORY ~
Halloween is around the corner, and Whitetail Club has the scoop on spooky places throughout Idaho that you can visit in the spirit of celebrating all things paranormal. Take a hike to a cave with a head-spinning past, take a chilling tour through an old prison, or visit a serial killer’s grave – all without ever leaving the state. Ready for some scary-good fun? Check out these local spots with a spooky history.
Idaho State Penitentiary Boise, Idaho
In 1872, two decades before Idaho became a state, the Old Idaho State Penitentiary, then known as the Territorial Prison, received its first 11 inmates from Boise County Jail. Shortly thereafter, it began to expand, and from its beginnings as a single cell house, the penitentiary grew to a complex of several buildings surrounded by a 17-foot-high sandstone wall. This locale still boasts an eerie gloom like no other, even after its extensive renovations to convert into the museum it is today. The eerie feeling may come from the fact that the prison’s dining hall was designed by George Hamilton, who oversaw construction while serving time on death row. Or maybe the atrocities that ensued in a particularly cruel section of the property, known as “Siberia:” a row of twelve 3-by-8-foot cells, that served as a severe form of solitary confinement. Or maybe it’s the creepiest attraction of all: the Rose Garden adjacent to what was death row. It may look like a jolly floral centerpiece now but was once the designated area to execute prisoners by hanging. Over its 101 years of operation, the penitentiary received more than 13,000 inmates, some infamous like Lyda Southard (mentioned in this article), which makes this location a prime spot for paranormal activity. 4.
Buffalo Cave Dubois, Idaho In August of 1979, a family set off on a hunt for arrowheads in the Buffalo Cave but found something much more sinister: burlap wrapped remains wearing a red sweater. A little over a decade later, another youngster exploring the same cave came up with more burlap-wrapped body parts: arms and legs. But no head was ever found, making identification impossible and leaving cold trail for solving this mystery. Over the years, the Buffalo Cave Torso was examined by the FBI’s elite forensic team and the Smithsonian, with no identification ever made. This was until 2019, when a genealogical tree was created from DNA samples and revealed a surprise to everyone: the Buffalo Cave Torso was not 40 but, in fact, over 100 years old. Joseph Henry Loveless, born in Utah Territory in 1870, was a known bootlegger and in May of 1916, he killed his wife in a frenzy. Once caught and booked in 1917, Loveless proceeded to flee jail with a saw he secretly kept in his shoe. Wanted posters were pasted all over town and it noted he was last seen heading north wearing a red sweater, but Joseph was never seen… until his body was found in 1979. Many believe his deceased wife’s family sought revenge and killed him while he was on the lam, but there is no evidence to prove this theory… yet! We know what you’re thinking, and the answer is: no, the head was never found. So, there’s no telling what you’ll come across when you visit Buffalo Cave this Halloween.
Lady Bluebeard’s Grave Twin Falls, Idaho
At 20 years old, Lyda Southard married her first husband in 1912 and they had a child in 1914. All was well on the family ranch until Lyda’s child, brother-in-law, and husband all fell ill and died within months of one another. Two years later, in 1918, the once widowed Lyda found love again and remarried, but tragedy struck when her second child suddenly died quickly followed by her second husband’s death. By 1919 Southard married her third husband, who died just four months later, and then married her fourth, who died just one month after their nuptials. That’s when Twin Falls chemist Earl Dooley discovered that Southard’s first husband and brother-in-law (who were Dooley’s distant relatives) were killed by poisoning. Further research showed traces of poison in of Lyda’s dead husbands: Could Lyda be poisoning her family? But how? And why? Turns out, Lyda Southard was extracting arsenic from fly paper to kill her family and collect their life insurance payouts. She was the sole beneficiary in all her husband’s life insurance policies, and just from the deaths of her first three husbands alone she collected the equivalent of over $100,000. The law caught up to Lyda in Honolulu (where she married for the fifth time), and following extradition to Idaho in 1921, she was convicted to serve ten to life. After escaping Idaho State Penitentiary in 1931, she fled to Denver and she married her sixth husband, Harry Whitlock, in March of 1932. But Lyda’s fate was sealed when Whitlock assisted the police in arresting his new wife just four months after their marriage, resulting in an additional ten years in prison. Lyda Southard is known as one of America’s earlier female serial killers and, due to her heinous crimes, was dubbed as Idaho’s Lady Bluebeard. Lyda Southard died of natural causes in 1958 and is buried at Sunset Memorial Park in Twin Falls. 5.
Tee time
What a tremendous September for golf at Whitetail Club. We started the month with Monster Golf, an annual event where we play the golf course from the back tees to the 18 most challenging pin placements. This year Chris Roberts shot a gross 69, net 73, and won the individual. Those scores are correct, he is a plus 4! Great playing, Chris! The team of Chris and his partner Eric Borchers won low net team. We had 32 players, our largest field. Congratulations to all the players, and thank you for playing! Please join us for the Fall Classic, a 1pm shotgun on Saturday, October 10th. This event is open to all players, couples, and singles. You can make your own team, or the golf shop will pair you. To sign up, call The Golf Shop or text me. Following play, we will have a Member Mixer at The Golf Grille to award our champions.
As the season winds down, I’d like to thank the Golf Team for a wonderful season. To the Golf Shop staff Diana, Patty, Leigh, Kevin, and Marcus: your help this season was tremendous! I hope you enjoyed their service, and I expect they will all be returning next season. To the outside services team lead by Kevin Daugherty, Anna, Paul, Blake, Brody, Josh, Kelsey, Brooklyn, and Drew: thank you for a great season! Beer is a part of life here in McCall. From the bitter bite of an IPA to the warming flavors of a coffee porter and the refreshing taste of a light ale, you’re never far from a handcrafted brew made with locally sourced ingredients and served with no pretense. To get in the spirit of Oktoberfest, the traditional Bavarian beer-drinking festival dating back to the 1800s, we’re highlighting local brews and beer spots serving local drinks and food. We’ve also scoured the menus and sought out delicious porters with flavor profiles fit for the changing of the seasons. Taste our recommendations for yourself and let us know what you think.
