A Brief History of McCall, Idaho The town of McCall, Idaho has a long and exciting history starting with the first known inhabitants of the region -- the Native Americans of the Shoshone, Bannock and Nez Perce tribes. Most notable of their pursuits in the area was the history-making Battle of White Bird Hill, where Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce led his tribe to an infamous defeat of the U.S. Cavalry. The next settlers joined the Native Americans in the area in the 1880s. These Finlanders began homesteading in Long Valley, now known as the town of Roseberry. Building churches, barns, cabins and saunas that still stand today, the Finns were an upright, moral community. Banning “lewd and indecent resort and intoxicating drinks,” their settlement led the way for the creation of “infamous” McCall. As the mining and timber industries became more and more prevalent in these abundant lands, the town of McCall was established on the shores of Payette Lake. Housing the Brown Tie and Lumber Company, the largest employer in these parts of Idaho, McCall grew. Evidence of the toil of these hundreds of Chinese and American workers can still be seen today in the piles of mine tailings in the Warren and Marshall Mountain mining districts. The contrast between the tame Finnish community in Long Valley and the wild people in McCall was stark. As the number of rough-and-tumble miners and loggers grew, so too did the lakeside dance halls, brothels and gambling establishments in town. These hard working men and
women were loud and unruly gunslingers. In fact, firearms weren’t outlawed from local bars until the early 1980s. Although the rugged bars and rowdy establishments grew in number, the citizens of McCall needed more ways to liven up the cold, dark, long winters in the mountains. Traditions, some still honored today, were created to bring some liveliness into otherwise dreary days. So in 1924 an Olympic ski-jumping champion and long-time resident founded the Winter Carnival. Decorating the town with delicate, exquisite ice sculptures and organizing furious dogsled races, the carnival became a main celebration for the town -- a celebration that still brings visitors from far and wide today. Just four years before the Winter Carnival was founded, a monster was sighted in the glaciallycarved waters of the Payette Lake. Reported to be 30-feet long and possessing a strange way of moving, McCall’s very own Loch Ness Monster came to be known as Sharlie. Although some locals say Sharlie is nothing more than a large fish or aquatic mammal, others believe he is a friendly monster who wants nothing more than to keep visitors of the lake company during swims or boat outings. After a long and winding history, McCall of today is a haven, welcoming visitors in with open arms and offering an unforgettable experience. All registered guests may play our 18-hole championship course, designed by Andy North, two-time U.S. Open winner, and Roger Packard. The course is 7,200 yards from the championship tees with four tee selections to challenge all abilities. There are dramatic elevation changes winding through pine trees into open meadows and over a fully stocked trout pond with a panoramic view.
With panoramic views and a lively outdoor patio, the lodge-style Whitetail Club Golf Course clubhouse strikes the perfect balance of top-drawer amenities and a relaxing retreat for golfers and non-golfers alike. Facilities include a full-service restaurant, lounge and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The fitness studio is equipped with a stationary bike, treadmills, an elliptical trainer and free weights. For your convenience, chilled water, clean towels and television are provided. The fitness studio is open 24 hours a day for guest use and is located at the west end of the spa. An adult must accompany persons under 13.
Our outdoor heated pool and hot tubs are located at the end of the west wing. There is no lifeguard on duty. No glass or outside beverages are allowed in or around the pool area. Poolside service is available on a seasonal basis. Towels are available at the pool. An adult must accompany persons under 14.
Cruiser Bikes Cruise around town on one of our complimentary cruiser bikes. Please call Guest Services to check on availability. Bikes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Marina Kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards and sailboats are available for rent. Please contact Guest Services for rental information and reservations. Mooring of private watercraft is based on availability. $60 a night at the marina.

Storage Service Each room is equipped with a safe for guest use. Large items may be checked at Guest Services and may be secured in the bell closet. Wake-Up Calls Please press to request your wake-up call. Safety and Security Make sure you protect your valuables in a secure location or in the safe provided in each room. Use the deadbolt and safety latch on your door for extra security as they prevent entry by a regular room key. When leaving your room, check to ensure that your door is closed. Do not admit persons into your room without first identifying them through the view hole in your room door. If there is any question about the person’s identity, contact the front desk immediately. Safeguard your key, and be sure to leave it with the front desk upon departure. Don’t leave your key in your room or in the door, and do not give your key to others.

Please advise us if you are requesting emergency services such as police or ambulance assistance, and we will make that call for you. If we detect a 911 call made from your room, we will follow up with a call to your room. If there is no response, we will send a staff member to check on your well-being.
In Case of Fire First, locate the closest exits near your room. Count the doors between your room and exits so you will have a reference point if it’s smoky. If you hear an alarm, act, don’t investigate. If fire is in your room, get out and close the door behind you. Once out, report the fire. If the fire is not in your room, first, feel the door. If your room door is hot, do not open it. If it’s cool, open it slowly and go to the nearest exit. Crawl along the ground in smoke. Fresh air will be closest to the floor. Take your key so you can go back into your room if you cannot use your exits. If you cannot safely evacuate, your room may be the safest place to stay. Seal all cracks and spaces under doors with wet towels. Shut off fan and air conditioners. Dial 8 + 911 and wait for assistance.
