* On July 14, 1918, Quentin Roosevelt, a 20yearold pilot in the United States Air Service and the fourth son of former President Theodore Roosevelt, was shot down and killed by a German Fokker plane over the Marne River in France.
* On July 15, 1953, John Christie, one of England’s most notorious killers, was executed. Four months earlier, police and a tenant in West London had discovered
the remains of four women, one of whom was Christie’s wife, at a house where he’d lived, and he was apprehended and confessed a week later. Detectives soon found additional bodies buried in the yard behind the house as well.
* On July 16, 1862, Ida B. Wells, a future educator, investigative journalist and civil rights activist, was born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Motivated in part by racism within the women’s suffrage movement, she would eventually found and cofound the NAACP, the National Association of Colored Women, and the Alpha Suffrage Club.

Pauline S. Hoover
Pauline S. Hoover, 85, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, at her residence.
She was born in Elizabeth Township to the late Frank and Cora (Hoover) Seibel and was the wife of Amos B. Hoover.
She was a member of Cocalico Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference).
Pauline spent 24 years working as a nurse at Fairmount Homes as well as in several hospitals and clinics. Later she worked in speech therapy for people with special needs.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 13, 2026 from Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, with further services at Springville Mennonite Church, 580 Springville Rd., Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin Martin and Bishop J. Paul Hoover officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery.

From the legacy of 245 poems from the Dutch pen of the late Anna F. Faust, die Anna vun Bannwill, for this week’s ECK we have chosen a poem she wrote a year ago, before she began to suffer from her terminal illness.
KINNER VERHAUSE pretty well speaks for itself. It reflects the traditional, tried and true Pennsylvania Dutch attitudes on bringing up children. It is rather dramatic contrast with views of many of the “baby boomer” generation. Those of us who teach young folks – in our case college age – know, from personal experience and from what we read, that many of the children of the “baby boomers” have been deprived of much too little. Some parents of this younger generation place their offspring with childcare centers as early as six weeks after birth so they can return to work. The question is, who is actually raising these children? Recently, we heard of a case where a child spent ten hours of his day in a childcare center. Mer meent’s kennt net sei!
Die Anna vun Bannwill and all our SHOPPING NEWS parents know better. Proper care and nuture of children has been one of the strong cultural traits of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Our parents and grandparents didn’t have to go to school to learn how to bring up their children properly.

“Put evil in its place”

Scripture: Romans 12:21
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Last week we looked at biblical ways to overcome evil with good. They were: Never return evil for evil, but return good for evil. If at all possible, be at peace with everyone Leave justice with God in His time. Love your enemies and pray for them. It is helpful to realize it’s natural for the enemies of God to hate and mistreat you; Christ said they would. It’s not you personally; it’s just that they have to do so because they are literally controlled by the god of this world. Turn the other cheek; be able to take insults; don’t get pulled into arguments,
challenges; live above getting offended. There is nothing more repulsive then the believer who is easily offended; huffing and puffing and saying; “well, I never in my life.” Well, you’re right. You’re living your life, not the Christ life. Why not follow the eleventh commandment; “Thou shalt not sweat it.”
Lastly, understand you will not be able to live this unless you are looking to the eternal not the temporal (like Abraham and Moses). Unfortunately, there is another evil that we are called upon to overcome, and this one is false doctrine. God says; “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. You may have children, friends, relatives or coworkers that get mixed up in false doctrine and it’s your job to “Preach the word; be instant in season, and out of season; reprove, rebuke and exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2). Hebrews 5:14 puts it this way; “But strong meat belongs to those who are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their
senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” A good working knowledge of the Bible will go a long way to protecting not only you, but others as well. We are not to naively believe whatever
comes down the pike, but we are to, “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world”(1 John 4:1). Know your Bible! If you’re a parent, it’s your
job to live and teach sound doctrine to your children. Deuteronomy 6:7; “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down and when thou risest up.” That’s pretty much all the time.
Yet, another way to overcome evil with good is by our words. Our conduct is so important, but we cannot overlook our words. It’s imperative to have a good testimony in our life, but our words also need to be seasoned with salt. “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how you ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6). Our life must match what our lips proclaim. Many believers think that you should be a silent witness. Well, no such thing exists in God’s economy. If you are silent about Christ, you are not a witness. Some people think one is more important than the other. It’s not true, you need both. That’s like asking which wing of an airplane is more important; the right wing or the left wing. Titus
2: 7, 8 ties both our conduct and our speech together. “In all things, show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.”
Finally, the negative side of speech; don’t be a part of it. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out or you mouth, but only that which is edifying” (Ephesians 4:29). “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45b).
So, in review, we can overcome evil with good by; a willingness to take insults patiently, not being easily offended, leaving justice to God, living for the eternal not the temporal, studying so we can refute false doctrine. By consistent use, understand God’s word enough to discern both good and evil. Finally, by our conduct and our speech harmonizing with God’s ways and character.
We will hopefully finish the study next week, so, until then, “Overcome evil with good.”

East Cocalico “Lion Of The Year”
Each year the East Cocalico Lions Club honors one of their members with a “Lion of the Year” award. This award is given to a Lion who in the past Lionistic year has been very active in the club, has displayed and believed in the values of Lionism, has provided service to the community and to the club, has shown commitment to the club’s and the association’s motto of “We Serve” and most of all promoted the Lion Spirit and the ideals of Lionism. This award is extra special because the recipient is selected and voted on by the members of the club.
Recently, the Lions of East Cocalico presented this prestigious award to Lion Mark Janke. Lion Mark is the Chairperson of the Club’s French fry stand and can been seen frying those delicious fries that are sold at all the home Cocalico Football games. He has served in many leadership roles including President of the Club.
Lion Mark received a certificate and will have his 2026/2027 Membership Dues paid by the Club.
The members of the East Cocalico Lions, who have been “Lighting the Way” in their community for more than 80 years, would like to thank Lion Mark for exhibiting the values of Lionism and for providing valuable service to the
community and to the club.

Catalyst Archery Team Continues To Excel
The Catalyst Middle School Archery team propelled themselves to a second place finish at the 2026 PA NASP State 3D Tournament in March, while setting a new school team record of 1,571. This is the first team award received by the Catalyst Archery team. Individual awards were also won in the 3D State Tournament by eighth grader Danika Martin, who took third place with a personal best score of 280/300, improving upon her fifth place finish in 2025. Fellow middle school archer, sixth grader Lily Fry, also had a
personal best score of 277/300, and took the award for fourth place in the State 3D Tournament.

Since then, Catalyst has had at least one individual award winner each year in either the 3D or the Bullseye State Tournament, including a two-time MS State 3D Champion. Lion Recognized As PA Foundation Fellow
Lions District 14-D, Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation and the East Cocalico Lions Club recently recognized an East Cocalico Lion member as a PA Foundation Fellow. Lion John Weiss was honored for faithfully serving his club and community with his donation of time and efforts and for giving his special support for those less fortunate in our state. He received a pinnacle and lapel pin acknowledging his dedication to the foundation’s humanitarian goals. The Mission of the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation is to assist those afflicted with sensory impairment, particularly those relating
to vision and hearing. They do this by awarding grants in support of special projects and programs for the sensory impaired and to join with individual Pennsylvania Lions Clubs in responding to local, community, and regional needs. The important thing is that all the money received remains in Pennsylvania. Since joining the club in 2018, Lion John has been very active, serving on several committees and helping at many of the clubs’ events and fundraisers. He also serves in a leadership role for the club. Lion John at one time was introduced as one of the club’s quiet
ones. That did not mean that he does not speak up when he has something to say. Far from it. It’s just that he feels comfortable sitting in the background and does not require much attention. East Cocalico Lions Student Of The Month
Each month, the East Cocalico Lions Club honors a Cocalico High School student for their achievements and for being one of the High Schools and the community’s finest. Each student is presented with a certificate and a monetary gift along with a gift from the Adamstown Public Library.
Recently, at a club meeting that she and her parents attended, Briella Wilson was honored as the Club’s Student of the Month by the members of the East Cocalico Lions Club. Some of her school activities include being a member of the Varsity Softball Team, National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Briella believes in the Lions Clubs motto of “We Serve” by representing the Lions clubs of the Cocalico School Area by serving with the Cocalico High School Leo Club, a Lions club ser-
vice organization within the High School. Her community activities include volunteering at the Ephrata WellSpan Hospital. Her future plans include attending a medical school and becoming a neonatologist.

Denver Lions Mark 100 Years Of Service
The Denver Lions Club celebrated its 100th anniversary at the Foxchase Golf Club, joined by sixty members, guests and community partners. The evening featured dinner, entertainment and history presentations spanning the Club’s first 100 years.
Leaders of Cub Scout Troop 3204 and Boy Scout Troop 4318 opened the event with presentation of colors. Second Vice District Governor, Pat Benson installed the 20262027 officers and inducted new Denver Lion Rob Nauroth.
Leading the Denver Lions Club into their next century are Rick Bates, President; Mark South, First Vice President; Vince Lafferty, Second Vice President; Dennis Worley, Treasurer; Brian Fry, Secretary; Ken Bennetch, Membership Director; Barry Specht, Lion Tamer; and Jeff
