Senior Moments Luncheon

First Church Ephrata, 68 North Church Street, Ephrata, will hold its monthly Senior Moments Luncheon on Thursday, December 11 at 11:45 a.m. (eat at 12:00 noon – there is a small cost) followed with music and song by Gary Pike and Lynne Kline. They are bringing them back to entertain again, so come and enjoy them!

Gary & Lynne, both lifelong Ephrata residents, have been singing together for almost 45 years. They have and continue to sing in the choir at Hopeland Church. While mostly singing for church groups, they have expanded to sing at weddings, funerals, retirement homes, local social groups and other special occasions. Their programs feature easy listening with today and yesterday’s hits, or popular Christian music with a message. Christmas season is their “most favorite time of the year.”

“Five years ago, Katrina and Kleon Zimmerman began a wreath project sponsored by local businesses,” Haynes said. “Every year the wreaths represent our community and beyond and they help to fund the Christmas tree lighting.”

There a man approaches us; He looks quite familiar. “I think he’s an old friend From Lancaster County!”

Fritz says to him quite loud, “How are you today Yoel?” Yoel stops, is quite perplexed, And says, “What do you know!???”

It’s time to pay our taxes; They must go to the courthouse. The taxes are much too high; Oh, how it pains our purse!

By noon they’re hungry; The restaurant is just a step away. A sandwich, soup, coffee and pie; Oh, that gives them a good appetite.

Then they come by a movie house; People are going in and out. The music they can hear From the inside of the darkened theater.

A Western is playing; They’re shooting like mad. We quickly pass by:

“This isn’t for our sort of people!”

Next they go to Moyer’s Drug Store, Their supply of medicine at home is low.

Mom buys a bottle of Lydia Pinkham’s; Dad buys a bottle of schnapps.

Then come the grocery store; Mom wants sugar and flour, Yeast, salt, tea and coffee, And a good supply of coal oil.

It’s going toward evening, they go home; The day is almost over.

The horse knows the way right well; He goes right down the lane.

In the morning Fritz’s purse

Was quite heavy.

When he left town,

The money was almost all gone.

Willie can’t forget the town, “I want to go back.

There are things I want to see,

When I’m a bit older.” ***

This most recent Dutch poem from the pen of Ivan I. Miller of Elkhart, Indiana was written in July and mailed to us in an envelope postmarked on July 25 in South Bend, Indiana.

Ivan writes that he “tried to visualize a Pennsylvania Dutch, very, very rural family of 60 years ago going to a larger city, perhaps once a year.” Ivan also reports that he has often heard “Beim Beddel nochamohl!” among the Pennsylvania Dutch. We quite agree that it defies an exact translation, for it appears to be a mild expletive in the context of being surprised or nonplussed.

With Ivan’s permission, we have supplied a Dutch word or two and ironed a bit around the edges where necessary. We hope he will see fit to continue to share his earlier memories with us in der Mudderschprooch.

In the letter which he appends, Ivan asks about our own PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN DICTIONARY: English to Pennsylvania Dutch. It was published by Brookshire Publishers, 200 Hazel Street, Lancaster, PA, the publishers of DIE BOTSCHAFT. Some of the Provident Bookstores carry it. It can also be ordered directly from Brookshire Publishers in Lancaster. It is now in its second printing.

Don’t Give Up

Being discouraged spiritually isn’t exclusive to pastors either. All believers encounter this at one time or another. You can almost feel the sorrow of heart when you read the testimonies of God’s men of the past. David wrote: “I had fainted…” (Psa. 27:13), Jeremiah said: “When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me” (Jer. 8:18), and Jonah said: “… my soul fainted within me” (Jonah 2:7). They were so discouraged and spiritually weakened that they simply felt like giving up. Thankfully, these servants of God did not give up, and there is much to learn from what carried them through.

Jonah relates to us how he found the strength to carry on: “I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto Thee, into Thine holy temple” (Jonah 2:7). Coupled with obedience to God’s will, his discouragement turned when he stayed

Being in the pastorate can be discouraging. After all, you are an obvious target for criticism. The messages are always too long or too short, you use too many illustrations or not enough, the content is too deep or too shallow, you stand too strongly on biblical truth or not strongly enough, and so it goes. On one occasion, I had a Christian leader harshly dress me down in public for 45 minutes and accused me of a variety of things I simply had not done. He only thought I had done them. I left that meeting so discouraged; I just wanted to give up the ministry, and maybe even give up walking with the Lord. Thankfully, He sent me encouragement when I needed it most.

his mind on the Lord in prayer. Similarly, Isaiah proclaims: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength…they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). As you can see, Isaiah also found it helpful to focus his thoughts on the Lord through prayer.

The Apostle Paul had opposition from without and from within the company of believers, and had much to be discouraged about, but he didn’t quit. His testimony was: “seeing we have this ministry…we faint not” (II Cor. 4:1). He kept his heart focused on serving the Savior, with Galatians 6:9 in mind: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Simply put, heaven and reward from the Savior strengthened the resolve of this servant. It can for us too.

Are you discouraged spiritually? Don’t quit! Pray, focus on the importance of serving Christ, and rejoice in future reward!

Hosts Sermon Series

First Church Ephrata’s series on the Gospel of John is continuing. If you are watching on TV, are using their website streaming or are coming to their services, they hope you are getting a better understanding of what is being said in the Gospel of John. So, even if you’ve heard preaching on this Gospel before, come, listen and learn more.

First Church is on their eleventh and last group of sermons in their Gospel of John series and they’d love to have you continue to join them. First Church Ephrata is located at 68 North Church Street, Ephrata, and has a Traditional service at 8:30 a.m. and a Contemporary service at 10:30 a.m. They now have both their 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services ‘live streamed’ for those of you are wanting a morning service at home on the website https://

ephratafirst.org/. They also have TV coverage of their 8:30 a.m. service on Blue Ridge Cable Channel 11 at 12:00 noon on Sunday. If you miss a sermon, they are archived and can be easily found on their website. Any questions, please call the church office at 7177382465.

Beginning on Sunday, December 7, they will begin a new series on The Book of Acts, also known as the Acts of the Apostles. It is the fifth book of the New Testament and is a historical account of the early Christian church, beginning with Jesus’ ascension and the subsequent spread of the gospel by his apostles. It is essentially a sequel to the Gospel of Luke, continuing the story of Jesus’ ministry through his followers. They would love to have you continue with them on the new series in December.
