Denver Memorial Park Association Holds Fish Pond Fundraiser
In 1949, when 14 acres of farm pasture was donated to the town of Denver to be used as a community park and gathering place, sandstone was readily available and was used to enclose the natural spring on the property into a goldfish pond and garden.
After 77 years, the fish pond needs the front wall totally rebuilt and all four walls repointed and sealed. In the original deed, it is written that “The Quarry Hole shall not be closed, but shall be improved.”

Elizabeth A. Turner
Elizabeth A. Turner, 91, of Reinholds, Spring Twp., known affectionately as Bette, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 29th, 2026. Born on July 30th, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, Bette was proudly raised in Dundalk, Maryland, to the late Ralph & Elizabeth (Berry) Bailey.
Bette graduated from The Catholic High School of Baltimore with the Class of 1952. Active and involved within her community, she loved everything local within Berks and Lancaster County. Bette was a dedicated member of the former Adamstown Lions Club. Other organizations she was involved with were Old Dry Road Farm, Brain Injury Support Group, and the beginning years of Adamstown Community Days. She cherished her annual trips to Middle Creek with her family to experience the snow geese each year, it was a highlight she looked forward to. A true patriot at heart, Bette delighted in celebrating the red, white, and blue holidays, finding
cherished by all who had the fortune of knowing her, remaining true to herself and everyone she loved, especially family.
community and pride in those moments. Throughout her life, Bette’s heart was always with her family. She was deeply loving and welcomed everyone with a smile and a hug. A woman of deep faith, Bette was involved in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she found fellowship, comfort, and a sense of belonging. Bette is survived by her daughter, Margaret Yatron, wife of Nicholas Yatron; her granddaughter, Victoria Hammer, wife of Paul Hammer; her grandson, T.J. Fugee; and her great-grandchildren, Trent Fugee, Nathan Purcell, Bryce Hammer and Cali Hammer; and many loving pets. She is predeceased by her daughter, Roxanne and her son, Craig Turner.

Ivan Z. Martin
Ivan Z. Martin, 93, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Lincoln Christian Home.
He was born in Earl Township to the late Daniel and Lena (Zimmerman) Martin and was the husband of the late Irene M. (Newswanger) Martin.
He was a dairy farmer and a member of Meadow Valley Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference).
Ivan is survived by three sons, Vernon, husband of Louella Martin of Ephrata, Ivan Lamar, husband of Nancy Martin of Lancaster, MO, Mark, husband of Lorraine Martin of Lititz; three daughters, Marian, wife of Henry Huber of East Earl, Lorraine, wife of Levi Burkholder of Osage, IA, Ella Mae, wife of Nathan Nolt of Fennimore, WI; 49 grandchildren; 152 great-grandchildren; a greatgreat-grandson; a sister, Mary Martin and a daughter-in-law, Nora Martin of Ickesburg, PA.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in
death by a son, Carl Martin; two grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; five brothers and six sisters.

Dorene Ann Schulze, 74, of Akron, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at her residence.
She was born in Reading to the late Anna Mae Gould and was the wife of Bruce Schulze.
During her working years, Dorene worked for Conestoga Wood. She enjoyed shopping, playing games on her tablet and dogs and cats.

Ephrata Concert Band To Perform
The Ephrata Community Concert Band is scheduled to perform their second concert of the season on Sunday, July 12. This will happen at 7:00 p.m. in the Tom Grater Park. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Ephrata Rec Center. This event is completely free to the public to attend.
The July 12 program will continue the America 250 theme this time focusing on tunes from the Silver Screen. The band will play Selections from the Music Man, and vocalist Eddie Adams will be featured on “Over the Rainbow.” Music of all generations will be played featuring the depth of musical genres from our country’s history.

Each month, the East Cocalico Lions Club honors a Cocalico High School student for their achievements and for being one of the High Schools and the community’s finest. Each student is presented with a certificate and a monetary gift along with a gift from the Adamstown Public Library.
Recently, at a club meeting that she and her mother attended, Fiona Chisholm was honored as the Club’s Student of the Month by the members of the East Cocalico Lions Club. She is very active in school participating in Student Government, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society (Vice President), Mock Trial, Symphonic Band and Cocalico Playmakers.

The Book of Acts is the fifth book of the New Testament and is a historical account of the early Christian church, beginning with Jesus’ ascension and the subsequent spread of the gospel by his apostles. They come in all sizes, no two are alike. Both rich and poor have one. It is found in the middle of the face, About it, I write this silly poem.
Noses can give pleasure or trouble. To have a cold is not funny. It keeps one busy with a handkerchief And often takes away the sense of smell.
A nose is smart and can give advice. It differentiates between things dead or alive. It can tell if milk is fresh or sour, Whether to drink it or not.
Some folks think their noses are too bigThey pay doctors to change them.
To me, such actions are foolish. There is a limit to pride.
A woman with a cold invited a man to stay for dinner. He waited to see where the drop at the end of her nose would fallHe wouldn’t want it on his food.
To insult others some put their hand on their nose. It’s rude to call anyone a snotnose or a nosey person.

DIE NAAS by the late Anna F. Faust is taken from the third volume of poems by Anna F. Faust, “Die Anna vun Bannwill,” which was published in January of 1989 by Betsy Reifsnyder, Anna’s niece, the daughter of Edith Reifsnyder. This volume, which contains the poems written from March to December 1987, is entitled: DIE ANNA VUN BANNWILL: DIE 1987 GEDICHDE - Anna of Bernville: the 1987 Poems. It contains a brief history of the Degler and Schaeffer families and was edited by Betsy Reifsnyder. The Preface provided by Betsy Reifsnyder is most helpful in understanding Anna Faust’s poetry, her life and her times. We have featured DIE NAAS in this ECK because it
“Die Anna vun Bannwill wrote about this poem, ‘In our Horizon Center PA German class yesterday, we used one of Ernie Bechtel’s columns, in which he threatened to quit if his readers persisted in heckling him, even going as far as to thumb their noses at him on the street. That was enough to give me an idea (for this poem).’”
The Horizon Center PA German class is an annual sixweek class held each March and April in a Berks County social hall in Reading, PA. The instructors are Elmer Gebhart and Dorothy Kline. The class, which has been held for some 15 years, could best be described as a refresher course for people who already have some familiarity with the dialect. About 20 to 25 people attend each year. Anna Faust attended the class in 1987 and helped with the class in 1988.
“Ernest Waldo Bechtel (1923-1988) owned his own barbering business in Sinking Spring, PA and was also a prolific PA German author. As a child, Ernie Bechtel was chastised for speaking the dialect in school, but he went on to write both PA German poetry and plays. He was also the author of the dialect column ‘Gscheitheide und Dummheide’ (Wisdom and Nonsense) published weekly in the Ephrata Review from 1970 to 1988. In addition, Ernie and his wife, Irene belonged to the team (including Bischli-Gnippli) broadcasting ‘Die Alde Kummraade’ (Old Comrades) dialect radio program on WLBR of Lebanon, PA since May of 1971.”
Betsy Reifsnyder has now completed her project of publishing all of her aunt’s poems. All of the Dutch poems of Anna F. Faust, die Anna vun Bannwill, are now available in four booklets. The final volume is entitled: DIE ANNA VUN BANNWILL: DIE 1988 GEDICHDE - Anna of Bernville: The 1988 Poems. ***
This week, we salute the memory of die Anna vun Bannwill, a great lady of PA Dutch letters, and her devoted niece, Betsy Reifsnyder, who has insured that the poems of her aunt, Anna F. Faust, have been preserved for the present generation and those yet to come.

East Cocalico Lions Install Officers
Recently, at a special meeting held at the Reamstown Fire Hall, Past District Governor Bob Eberly installed the officers of the East Cocalico Lions Club for the Lionistic year of 2026-2027.
Lion Leo Maynard became the 82nd president of the club, which was chartered in 1944 and is part of the largest International Service Organization in the world which is made up of over 1.4 million men and women covering 209 countries and geographic areas.

“Put evil in its place”

Scripture: Romans 12:21“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Last week, we ended with some general commands by which, if followed, we would overcome evil with good. They were: never return evil for evil; purpose to be at peace with everyone; do good things for those who would be or are an enemy; leave the justice to God, He will judge perfectly and in His time. We closed with David, who never lifted up his hand against King Saul, even though Saul sought to kill David for years because of insane jealousy. Remember, David was
anointed to be king but never was installed until 15 years later. David respected Saul’s position as king through extreme circumstances. That is returning good for evil. Think how troubling this must have been for David. He was anointed as the next king, but the current king is seeking his head on a platter. How many times David must have wondered and asked when will this happen? Why is Saul seeking my death? David trusted in his God to bring this to pass in God’s timing. In order to live out these principles, you must be able to look to the future and live for it. You must have a living and thriving faith in your God and His plan for your future
Case in point, Abraham. God was planning to make a great nation from his seed. Why would you pick up and go just because God said so; if you don’t even know where you are going. God never told him where he would end up when he departed, other than, “to a land
I will show you.” The answer is in Hebrews 11:10. Abraham was looking for a city that had foundations, whose designer and builder is God. Abraham lived for the eternal, not the temporal. You can’t be earthly focused and live the New Testament life. The same can be said of Moses. He looked to the eternal when making decisions in time Hebrews 11:24-26, “By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to en-
dure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the temporary pleasures of sin, considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for preserved, as though seeing Him who is unseen.” In order to return good for evil, you must be eternally focused by faith.

praying for our enemies and those who persecute you. Matthew 5:44 says; “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Christ certainly practiced what he preached from the cross. He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Remember Job? The Bible says; “The Lord also restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased double all that Job had” (Job 42:10). Well, Job’s friends weren’t the greatest, so, how does that saying go? With friends like that, who needs enemies. It’s no coincidence that double his fortune was restored after he prayed for his friends who mistreated him in his trials.
An often-misunderstood verse is still another way we can overcome evil with good. That verse is Matthew 5:38-39; “You have heard that it was said, ‘eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but whoever slaps you
on the right cheek, turn the other toward him also.’” In Christ’s day, slapping a person on the cheek was a forceful public insult; it was not considered a violent assault. A strike on the right cheek would require a backhand strike from the aggressor. We have seen this played out in some of the old movies done at a time with gloves. It is looked upon as an insult, a challenge, and a severe affront to a person’s dignity. To turn the other cheek would essentially say you will not be intimidated nor will you allow the aggressor to publically shame you. Turning the other cheek does not mean you let someone beat you into the next life! It means you are above being threatened, intimidated, insulted or dishonored. Remember these cultures were at times antagonistic to the gospel. It primarily means we don’t retaliate, we trust in our God and let offenses go for a higher purpose. We will pick up here next week.

Nevin R. Andes, 83, of Ephrata, went to meet his Lord & Savior on Thursday, July 2, 2026. He passed away at home after a 12-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones. Nevin was born in Ephrata to parents, Ray and Irene (Wenger) Andes and he was the loving husband of 62 years to Darla (Nissley) Andes, his high school sweetheart. After graduating from Ephrata High School, class of 1960, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and served his country for 4 years. After the Corps, he attended business school and entered the banking industry, working at several banks over the next 20 years. After his children were grown, he followed his passion and opened the Cycle Barn. He had spent years taking vacations on motorcycles with his wife and daughters, from Florida to
