The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday,
from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. There is no cost to attend.
The Center serves independent Lancaster County seniors ages 60 and up from Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for lunch and transportation must be made by 10:00 a.m.,

Larry L. Eberly
Larry L. Eberly, 78, of Stevens, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon.
He was born in Ephrata, son of the late Lester W. and Earla W. (Hainly) Eberly and was the husband of Sandra I. (Sweigart) Eberly.
Larry was a member of Swamp Lutheran Church.
Prior to retiring, Larry worked various jobs. He was a food/beverage manager for Hilton and also worked for Woolworths in Denver, Penn Dot, and he hauled horses at New Holland Auctions.
In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by a son, Larry

Grace Nolt
Grace Nolt, 92, formerly of Reamstown, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026. Born and raised in Schoeneck, she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Minnie (Schware) Latshaw and the loving wife of Gilbert Nolt for 65 years until his passing in 2019.
Grace’s life was centered around caring for others. She enjoyed cooking, tending to her family, and watching over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known to all as “Mama,” she had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, supported, and loved. She cherished trips to Rehoboth and Bethany Beach, where she found joy in the ocean air and time spent with family. Shopping outings were a favorite pastime, as were Thursday night bingo games at the Denver Fire Hall. Grace also loved playing Uno, a simple pleasure that brought laughter and connection to many fam-

WADDE VUM BUMBERNICKEL BILL
Just about the time Bischli-Gnippli was born in midFebruary in 1925, something very significant happened in Lehigh County, PA. It was at that time that the late William S. Troxell, “der Bumbernickel Bill,” began to write regularly (several times a week) a Dutch column for The Allentown Morning Call. Our friend and mentor, J. William Frey, presented the historical background for the Bumbernickel Bill columns in the master’s thesis he wrote at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois in 1939. Dr. Frey wrote as follows:
“In 1913, The Allentown Morning Call, a daily newspaper published in Allentown, Pennsylvania, began running a column several days a week written in PennsylvaniaGerman Dialect for the many readers in that region who speak the Dialect as their mother-tongue. This column was written by Solomon DeLong, whose pen name was “Obediah Grouthommel,” and consisted in the main of humorous anecdotes about the local people and comments on the general news of the day… “Obediah” continued
writing his column until his death twelve years later, whereupon Bumbernickel Bill took up the work in 1925.”
Late in August of 1988, after Bischli-Gnippli returned from the Lancaster Hospital, having undergone angioplasty, he needed a light task which would enable him to get plenty of rest, yet at the same time give him a feeling of accomplishment. Since Xeroxed copies of the early years of the Bumbernickel Bill columns were available, Bischli un Gnippli took up Bumbernickel Bill’s first column, printed on February 9, 1925, and began to write out words of unusual interest on file slips. This project, begun the latter part of August in 1988, has now become a major part of our revision of Marcus Bachman Lambert’s PG Dictionary, which was published by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1924; thus we can be very sure that Lambert made no use of the Bumbernickel Bill columns.
We have learned as we continue this eight-month-old project that these B.B. columns constitute a very important source for hitherto unrecorded Dutch words, and colorful illustrations of how these and other Dutch words were used in sentences.

This Father’s Day, families will gather to thank dads for all they do. Gifts often are part of Father’s Day celebrations, and here’s a list of gift ideas for dads with various interests.
Gaming Dad
The draw of popular video games doesn’t abate for some men as they get older. If your dad is at home with game controller in hand, then gifts that feed his hobby can be ideal.
Virtual reality has made great strides. Devices that enable VR game play and other entertainment may appeal to Dad. There are a few options on the market, like the Oculus, Pico Neo, HTC Vive, and Valve Index.

Simpsons”: There are certainly the Jim Anderson’s of the “Father Knows Best” variety of TV dads, but Homer tips the dad scale entirely in the other direction. Lazy, gluttonous and often half-witted, it’s a wonder Homer was able to hold down a job to care for his family. But at the crux of this underachiever was a heart of gold…or doughnuts. You decide.
Ray Barrone, “Everybody Loves Raymond”: “Newsday” sportswriter and dad to twin boys and a daughter, Ray’s biggest feat was being able to head his family unit despite the interference of his parents, who lived right across the street. Ray was an everyman who navigated his wife’s mood swings and family stress with not nearly as much finesse as he showed on the golf course.
Archie Bunker, “All in the Family”: Loud, bigoted and conservative, Archie was the complete opposite of his liberal daughter and her “Meathead” husband.
Archie’s commentary may have been offensive and controversial, especially in the time in which the sitcom aired, but viewers could tell he had his family’s best interests at heart.
Tony Soprano, “The Sopranos”: What’s a better ally for a son or daughter than a dad who’s other family is a criminal organization? Tony may not have many redeemable qualities, but he did his best to keep the family together amid the pressure cooker that was his life of crime.
Steve Keaton, “Family Ties”: It’s hard being a former hippie and raising a conservative, Ronald Reagan-loving son. Together with his wife, Keaton did a good job at tackling the tough questions of the 1980s.
Al Bundy, “Married With Children”: Al Bundy served as a role model to all dads out there, showing the world what NOT to do. Faced with a lousy job, bumbling wife, airhead
daughter, and underachiever son, the only thing Al had to look forward to at home was a comfortable couch.
Charles Ingalls, “Little House on the Prairie”: A hard-working frontiersman, Charles was soft-spoken and always put the needs of his family first. Ingalls showed all dads what it was to be the rock of the family, especially when modern conveniences like running water and cable TV sports were yet to be invented.

Less Traditional Father’s Day Gift Ideas
Getting ready to gift Dad for Father’s Day? To those heading to the menswear department of their local clothing stores, do not even think about veering toward the tie display. Doesn’t Dad deserve something a little more than a necktie?
Father’s Day celebrates the scores of fathers who get up early every morning and head to work to provide for their families. It also honors the men who devote their free time to coach baseball practices, lead scouting troops, run behind a bicycle while a child is learning to ride, and so many other fatherly tasks.
Every year kids (and their moms) fret over what to purchase for the special man of the house. Maybe Dad has a hobby or interest that makes gifting easy. Too often, figuring out a Father’s Day present can be a challenge.
Although neckties top the list of go-to gifts, chances are Dad wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t unwrap one this year. Instead, think about these less-cliche gifts.
• “Of the month” club: Enroll Dad in one of those series subscriptions that sends him a new item to try every month. From fruit to books, there are many opportunities to find something he’ll enjoy. Plus, this shows Dad he’s special more than one day during the year.
• Food basket: If the “way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” a gift basket filled with his favorite treats will be a winner. Look for specialty items that he enjoys but seldom buys.
• Sports game: Buy tickets to attend a game when Dad’s favorite sports team will be playing nearby. Wrap the tickets with some team memorabilia, like a new hat or T-shirt.
• Dinner for two: Although Father’s Day is to celebrate the special bond Dad has with his children, a father who often sacrifices his time
to be with the kids may not have many private moments with the other special person in his life. Arrange dinner reservations for two, so parents can go out and enjoy a little adult time.
• Fish aquarium: Tending to and watching fish can be a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Purchase Dad a new fish tank and accessories and make a date to go together to pick out fish to fill it.
• Something to make chores easier: Think about the chores that Dad does but may not enjoy. Arrange for an easier way to get those chores done. For the father who doesn’t relish mowing and tending to the lawn, reserve a lawn-care service for a month or two to ease Dad’s workload.
• Automotive accessories: Oftentimes, a car or truck is viewed as an extension of its owner. Dad may adore his ride and items that will help him wash, wax and buff it into a pristine vision will no doubt be appreciated.
There are many Father’s Day gifts to purchase or arrange that go beyond the stereotypical gifts bestowed year after year. Kids can make this celebration even better with gifts that really show they care.
Different But The Same
In the United States, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. While many other countries also celebrate it on that day, including Argentina, Canada, France and Japan, some do not. They celebrate their version of Father’s Day on other dates.
In Sicily, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19 as St. Joseph’s Day. The Roman Catholic feast day is believed to be the birthday of St. Joseph, stepfather of Jesus and husband of Mary. During the famine in Sicily, people prayed to St. Joseph to bring them a successful crop. Eventually, the famine came to an end, and in their gratitude, people promised to make an annual offering of their most prized possession, food, to St. Joseph.
Today in Sicily, the faithful erect St. Joseph tables and decorate them with lacy tablecloths, votive candles and lily blossom stalks. They then fill the tables with elaborate foods like breads, cakes, cookies, pasta and fish. A priest blesses the tables and a statue of St. Joseph presides over them.

Bread and fava beans, which are said to bring good luck and saved the Sicilians from starvation, are served to anyone who visits the tables. It is believed that as long as St. Joseph’s bread is kept in the home, a family will never starve.
In Germany, Father’s Day or “Vatertag” is celebrated on Ascension Day, the Thursday 40 days after Easter. Vatertag started in the Middle Ages as a religious procession honoring “Gott, den Vater” on Ascension Day. It remained a family day to celebrate fathers until the 19th century when it reappeared in Berlin as an alcoholic celebration. In east-
ern Germany, the holiday is called “Herrentag” or Gentlemen’s Day, and while there still may be drinking on that day, the overboard drinking is a thing of the past. Traditional celebrations involved men on a hiking tour pulling one or more small wagons containing beer or wine and regional food like blood sausage, liverwurst, eggs and vegetables.

“Put evil in its place”

Scripture: Romans 12:21“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
In the previous weeks, we considered the first half of our verse, “Do not be overcome by evil.”
To continue where we finished last week, we were looking at the evil within the believer. Believers need to understand there is a real battle between the flesh and the spirit. We also remembered that Christ said to Peter the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Paul emphasized this battle in Romans chapter seven when he said the good that I want to do, I don’t do and the evil I don’t want to do, that I do.
So, there is a battle that we will face until this life is finished. We also mentioned the idea that if you don’t sense this opposition, battle, and friction in your soul between the spirit and the flesh, you should examine yourself to see if you are in the faith.
The desire to be holy (Christ-like) and our resistance to evil’s constant attack and temptations in our spiritual life should be a battle, a struggle, a conflict. We are told to fight the good fight. Remember what God said to Cain after his sacrifice was rejected; “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Sure enough, temptation, anger and jealousy drove him to kill his brother not long after. Evil never goes on vacation. It’s always at the door. It’s funny, Christ gently knocks at the door, but evil tries to break in. Evil will usually start as a little thing at the beginning, something small, but like the frog in the pot of water on the stove, the temperature goes up slowly until he boils to death. Look
at some of the most horrible acts of mankind imaginable.
You ask yourself how someone can do that. The answer is simple, it starts small then eventually (with
more and worse exposure) in time evil overcomes the person.
So, how can we make sure we aren’t overcome by evil? The last half of our verse
tells us. Overcome evil with good. Philippians 4:8 says this, “Finally brethren, whatever is true whatever is honest, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.” What you think about will (to a large degree) determine what you do. This verse will knock your socks off, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). We are the sum of our thought. I don’t know about you, but for me that is a sobering verse. If you don’t believe in the total depravity of man, just look honestly at all of your thoughts. Our attitudes birth our actions. We become what we think about. An old, but true poem says, “Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an act, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.”
Our thought life is not static. Our thoughts either move us toward or away from God’s purpose. By filling our minds with good, we will have far less room for evil. Scripture shows
how important our thought life is. Here is a small sampling: Colossians 3:2 -“Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth.” How did Paul say we are transformed? By the renewing of your mind. In 2 Corinthians 10:5b we are told, “Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” One of the ways that we keep the flesh in check is as scripture says, “Make no provision for the flesh to fulfill the desire thereof” (Romans 13:14b). Don’t do anything that leads to or enables sin to enter in. It’s like Spurgeon said, “You can’t stop the birds from flying overhead but you sure can keep them from building a nest in your hair.” It’s not a positive thinking only approach, but we are somewhat responsible for our growth in Christ. There is a place for personal discipline. The Holy Spirit’s ministry certainly uses our minds.
So, next week, we will continue the study. But in the meantime, “Bring every thought captive to Christ.”

Cocalico Union High School Class Of 1956 Celebrates 70th Reunion
It was a milestone afternoon filled with nostalgia, laughter and deep reflection as the Cocalico Union High School Class of 1956 gathered on Friday, May 15 to celebrate their landmark 70th class reunion.
The historic gathering took place at the Udder Choice restaurant, where 14 of the remaining 33 classmates reunited to reminisce about a bond that has spanned seven decades. The original graduating class consisted of 57 students.
The afternoon was filled with joy as classmates caught up on life and looked back on their groundbreaking high school days. Remembering the “good old days” consumed most of the
time spent together, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by everyone in attendance.
The Class of 1956 hold a
unique and permanent place in local history: they were the very first class to graduate from the then newly-constructed Cocalico Union High School.
Prior to the construction of the consolidated high school,
local students were divided among Denver High School, East Cocalico High School or Governor Mifflin High School. For many of the graduates who grew up attending one-room schoolhouses - some of which lacked indoor plumbing -
entering the brand new Cocalico Union building felt like stepping into a palace.

monarch in Thailand’s history, having ascended to the throne on June 9, 1946. In celebration of the king’s birthday, homes and public structures are elaborately decorated with mostly yellow flags and lights. The Grand Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue are adorned with thousands of flowers. Fireworks and religious ceremonies are held throughout the country to celebrate and pray for the king’s happiness and continued good health.
December 5 is also the day when everyone expresses their gratitude to fathers throughout the country for the roles they play in family and society. In 1980, the president of the Volunteers and Educational Promotion Association, Khunying Neutip Samarasute, proclaimed December 5 National Father’s Day and the organizing committee chose canna as the symbol of the day.
These Father’s Day celebrations may be a little more elaborate than some. However, in some way, they all show fathers how much they are loved and respected.

Historical Museum Announces “America At 250” Photos

* On June 8, 793, in the first recorded Viking attack in Europe, Norse invaders launched a raid of looting and murder on England’s Lindisfarne monastery, with contemporary accounts describing “dreadful forewarnings” that included “fiery dragons flying in the sky.”
* On June 10, 1881, “War an* On June 11, 1919, 3-year-old racehorse Sir Barton won the Belmont Stakes, Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby in a single season, making him the first horse to earn what would become known as the American Triple Crown -- a particularly impressive feat since he had never achieved a win until that year’s Kentucky Derby.
* On June 12, 1974, Little League Baseball Inc. announced its intention to “defer to the changing social climate” by permitting girls to play ball. The decision came after the organization lost a series of lawsuits in New Jersey and was faced with increasing legal challenges in other states as well.
The New Holland Historical Museum at 207 East Main Street in New Holland has added an exhibit in honor of America’s Semiquincentennial, or if you prefer, the 250th birthday! The exhibit consists of photos from
the last 100-125 years, which just happens to coincide with the arrival and evolution of the modern day camera.

“America at 250” in Main Hall includes photos from past Main Street businesses and includes the trolley, prominent citizens’ photos, references to the connection to the Revolutionary War and a parade following
WWI. Themes in West Hall include “Agriculture Over the Past 100 Years” and old photos from neighboring townships of Earl, East Earl, Caernarvon and Brecknock.

Frank MacAdams Sr.
It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Frank MacAdams Sr., who went home to be with the Lord on June 4th, 2026 at the age of 69.
Frank’s legacy is being a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished brother, beloved uncle, and a man whose life reflected the love and grace of Jesus Christ. For 47 wonderful years, he shared an unwavering bond with his beloved wife, Sharon. They were married on March 31st, 1979 and together they built a life rooted in faith, family, laughter, and unconditional love. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring devotion. They cherished their time together enjoying the outdoors, traveling, and raising their family.
Frank lived his faith daily and he believed in helping others, offering kindness freely, and putting the needs of others before his own. Whether serving his church, supporting friends and neighbors, or quietly helping someone in need, he reflected Christ through humility, compassion, and generosity. He had a servant’s heart. His life was a testimony to faithful service and unconditional love.

Born in Gratz, PA, Janet was the daughter of the late Rev. John J. and Mabel Hartenstine Fasnacht. Because her father was a pastor in the Evangelical Congregational Church, the family moved frequently during Janet’s early life. They last lived in New Holland but because the local high school was at capacity, Janet attended and graduated from Upper Leacock High School in Leola, class of 1952.
Janet married George V. Styer on Oct. 30, 1953. They were married for almost 53 years until George passed in 2006.
Janet married Eugene Rodgers on June 8, 2014. They shared almost 12 years of marriage until Gene passed on Nov. 24, 2025.
Janet worked in her mother’s gift shop, the Pioneer Gift Shop, in New Holland. She also worked for a time in the office of Ziemer Buick in New Holland and she also worked at J.E. Gress Floor Service in New Holland for many years.
Janet was an active member of St. John’s Center UCC church in East Earl. She taught Sunday school and bible school. She sang in the choir and was organist for many years. She also served on the consistory. Janet transferred her membership to Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, after her marriage to Gene.
Janet was a member of the Samuel Fear chapter #417 of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving twice as worthy matron.
Janet loved reading, crosswords, knitting, diet Pepsi, fireworks, Christmas lights, music and baseball, especially the Phillies.

Esther S. Martin, 87, of Ephrata, passed away on June 3, 2026, at Lincoln Christian Home, surrounded by her loving family. Esther was born in Ephrata Township to her late parents, Elmer M. and Elizabeth H. (Shirk) Burkholder. Her beloved husband, Raymond W. Martin, survives at Lincoln Christian Home.

Janet is survived by three children; Pamela (John) Cameron of Lititz, Craig (Sandi) Styer of Terre Hill, and George (Angie) Styer of Denver; Grandchildren Jennifer (Blake Mitchell) Cameron, John (Marissa) Styer, Daniel (Taylor) Styer, Holli (Chad) Sensenig, and Brandi (Kyle) Martin; as well as eight greatgrandchildren; Lilly Styer, Adalyn Styer, Blakeli, Callan, Jett and Elliette Sensenig, Hank and Wade Martin and two additional on the way.
Also surviving are three step-children; Patti (Scott) Hornberger, Bradenton, FL, Jenni Simmons, Strasburg and Scott (Lisa) Rodgers, Emmitsburg, MD; also four stepgrandchildren; Erika (Jared) Weaver, Kyle (Jena) Hornberger, Emily Simmons and
Rachel (Hunter) Menges; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Eugene Fasnacht.

Carl S. Usner
Carl S. Usner, 89, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born on February 22, 1937, in Durlach, Pennsylvania, Carl was raised in the Mt. Airy area as one of nine children in a large and loving family and was a son of the late Harry and Salinda (Shealer) Usner. Carl was also the loving husband of Carole A. (Youndt) Usner for 62 years.
Throughout his life, Carl demonstrated a strong work ethic; working in the construction field for decades and eventually starting his own painting and wall covering business. His military service is a proud chapter of his life. A U.S. Army veteran, Carl earned distinction as a pitcher for the U.S. Army All Star Touring Team, highlighting his athletic talents and dedication to service. His love for baseball was evident early on, having coached and played in the Lebanon Valley league and later giving back to the sport by coaching softball at the former Zinn’s Park league. Carl also enjoyed baseball off the mound as he cheered on the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition to baseball, he was an avid league bowler at Dutch Lanes. He was a passionate outdoorsman. A testimony to his deep love for hunting and fishing, he was a proud member of the East Fork Rod & Gun Club in Potter County for over 70 years.
He was active in the Cocalico Sportsman’s Association where he volunteered as a cook, and he participated in the Reamstown Athletic Association. Carl was a longtime member of Mellinger’s Lutheran Church. He was an outgoing individual who possessed a naturally affable humor and a spirited, competitive nature. He enjoyed trivia and could easily name all 67 counties in Pennsylvania along with numerous baseball facts. Other interests included following the oldies group - The Mudflaps.
Terry Lee Weitzel
His devotion to family extended beyond his love for his wife, children, and grandchildren to his many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed family trips to the mountains, Maine, and out West. His warmth, enthusiasm, and positive attitude will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by two children, Christine L. Ward (Douglas) of Sinking Spring and Christopher S. Usner (Elizabeth) of Ephrata; grandchildren, Shannon, Connor, Ryan, Keara, Kaelyn, Taylor, and Brandon; siblings, Harold Usner, Pauline Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Salinda (Shealer) Usner, and siblings Mary Lou Weaver, Esther Fuehrer, Ruth DeVerter, Galen Usner, Russell Usner, and Eugene Usner.
