Akron Lions Club Prepares For Annual Day In The Park

The Akron Lions Club in conjunction with the Axle Snappers Car Club are calling all cars, trucks, motorcycles and anything with a motor to come out to the annual Akron Day in the Park. This family friendly event will be held Saturday, June 13th from 11:30 a.m.

until 4:00 p.m. in Roland Park. This great community activity includes free Bingo with great prizes, fun activities for the kids, door prizes, as well as delicious food and the ever popular “Adriano” singing the oldies. There will be a candy scatter at 1:00 p.m., pony

rides starting at 12:00 noon and the Swartz Petting Zoo from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Also, a bounce house and kiddie train rides will be available all day. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 100 entrants, with an awards presentation at 3:00 p.m. Everything is free

except the food, so bring the family out to an enjoyable community event.

The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. There is no cost to attend.

Judith A. DeFeo

Judith A. DeFeo, 77, of New Holland, passed away on May 23, 2026, at PennMedicine Lancaster General Hospital. Judith was born in Glen Ridge, NJ, to her late parents, Joseph R. Kapp, Jr. and Maria (Hall) Kapp. Her loving husband, George M. DeFeo, survives at home.

Judith was a beautiful woman with a captivating smile and an enormous heart. She was a devoted friend with a spirit of volunteerism. She enjoyed being surrounded by her friends, hosting parties and dinners, playing Scrabble, and living her life to the fullest. She cherished her time spent with George and his DJ business, playing music and hosting for multiple charities. Her voice was just as radiant and captivating as her

George Sidni Schlegel

George Sidni Schlegel, 94, fondly known as “Sid,” passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, at Brethren Village in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Born on October 13, 1931, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John C. and Esta (Stephen) Schlegel, and the loving husband of Kay M. (Smith) Schlegel for 73 years.

Sid’s journey began in Stevens, where he graduated from East Cocalico High School in 1949. Immediately following high school, he pursued further technical education at the former Wyomissing PolyTech, undertaking a rigorous four-year internship that combined practical shop experience with formal machining studies at Textile Machine Works. This foundation led to a distinguished 53-year career with Weaver Machine in Denver. Starting in the shop, Sid’s expertise and work ethic propelled him from estimating to sales, culminating in his role as Vice President of Sales. Even after retiring at 67, Sid’s passion for his work saw him continue part-time until the age of 83. Sid was a devoted member of his community in numerous ways. Since 1960, he

was deeply involved with the East Cocalico Lions Club, serving as its president twice and earning the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for his service. For 17 years, he was a dedicated member of the school board during a crucial period in which the first teacher’s union was established. His civic service also included membership on the planning commission for East Cocalico Township. His commitment to lifelong brotherhood was reflected in his 70year membership with the Ephrata Masonic Lodge, where he recently received a commemorative pin, celebrating decades of faithful participation in the Blue Lodge and the Lodge of Per-

fection and Consistory. As a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Sid cherished his involvement in church life. He generously gave his time running the Sunday school picnic for many years and volunteering in the kitchen, known for making pot pie, spaghetti, and famously preparing chicken corn soup over an open fire in a large kettle at the park. Sid’s love of the outdoors was another defining aspect of his life. He found joy in camping across the United States in a pop-up camper and developed a special fondness for Ocean City, Maryland. There, he delighted in fishing, crabbing, and clamming aboard a pontoon boat. For many years, he maintained a permanent campsite at Frontier Town, where he often generously shared the fruits of his labor with his church community, contributing over 80 dozen clams for clam bakes and clam cakes. Sid’s life was a testament to hard work, community service, and family devotion. His steadfast spirit and generous heart touched many. He will be remembered with reverence and gratitude by all who knew him.

Sidni Schlegel is survived by his four children: Rebecca Snyder (Todd) of Newmanstown, Andrew Schlegel (Jan) of Missouri City, TX, Michael Schlegel (Rebecca) of Wildwood, MO, and David Schlegel (Susan) of Birdsboro. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Daniel Snyder, Rachel Snyder, Morgan Bryan, Samantha O’Keefe, Hannah Facone, and Griffin Schlegel. His legacy continues through seven great-grandchildren. Sid is also survived by his brother, Theodore Schlegel (Gretchen) of California.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a celebration of life service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s E.C. Church; 46 E. Church Street, Reamstown, PA 17567. Sid’s final resting place will be at Fairview Cemetery.

William “Bill” Richard Owens, 82, husband of Marie Ann (Neuroth) Owens, Lititz, passed away on Thursday, April 30.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Jennifer Smith, wife of Ron, Lititz, and Ann Morris, wife of Ed, Cape Coral; and three grandchildren.

Jeremy S. Withers, 55, Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, May 16.

He is survived by his parents, Robert D. Withers, Wrightsville, and Linda M. (Bowman) Smeltzer, Manheim; and a sister, Wendy McMullen, Lititz.

John R. Buckwalter, 88, husband of Miriam Weaver Buckwalter, Landis Homes, Lititz, passed away on Monday, May 18.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Richard, husband of Ann Rutt, Lancaster; Timothy, husband of Andrea Brown,

Lancaster; and Robert, husband of Tracey Gilbert, New York City; two grandchildren; a brother, Henry, husband of Millie, Lancaster; and a sister, Marian, Lititz.

Marlin C. “Mike” Bitner, 88, Ephrata, passed away on Friday, May 22.

He is survived by a son, Brian Bitner, husband of Kamy, Los Angeles, California; a daughter, Melanie Kelly, wife of Edward, Ephrata; and a sister, Shelda Costello, Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter, Michelle; and a stepson, Donald.

David M. Hoover Jr., 87, husband of Anna Martin Hoover, New Holland, passed away on Sunday, May 24.

Besides his wife, he is survived by seven sons: Earl, husband of Lizzie Hoover,

“Put evil in its place”

Scripture: Romans 12:21 - “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

In the previous weeks, we considered the first half of our verse; “Do not be overcome by evil.”

Last week we ended with how easily we can be influenced by social media (which often presents an anti-Christ perspective) or at the very least, become less or even nonproductive… wasting time. We considered the second law of thermodynamics, which declares that unless you put new energy into your life, it will degenerate. We are to be actively and aggressive-

ly guarding against evil in our life. One verse that I wanted to share was Ephesians 5:11: “Have NO fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” This is one reason the world will hate us. Sorry, I didn’t give that command… God did! We are to make a complete break from the works of darkness in which we formerly walked. Then we considered Satan and his fall.

As the god of this world he seeks to take us captive, diminish and extinguish our life and ministry. He tempts, snatches away, and above all else, is the great influencer of this current world’s system. He is the father of lies, a murderer, a deceiver who appears as an angel of light, a roaring lion seeking to devour. His name means adversary, he has spiritual children just like God does and they seek to do his will on earth. They literally are under his spell. Ephesians 2:1,2 clearly states that worldlings must walk (live life) under the in-

fluence of their father (you know who). “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that now working in the sons of disobedience.” I guess it is comforting to know that people who are innately evil and live out the will of their “god of this world,” really don’t have much of an option. It should change our prospective that they oppose themselves and

just don’t know it. 2 Timothy 2:25 “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.”

We considered the evil from without. These destructive influencers are Satan himself, his minions, the world system (cosmos), the unbelievers that are under control of the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience. Finishing up the negative side of our equation on the influence

from the outward; “Do not be overcome by evil.” Now let’s look at the propensity for evil we face from within. You can call it “the old man,” “the sin nature,” “the flesh.” I am not sure it serves the church well to split hairs over terminology. Paul uses the term flesh to describe the source of the sinful acts he himself committed. He goes on to say that in his mind he didn’t really want to do those things.

Romans 7:18 “For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not, for the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.” Romans 7:21 says; “I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.” Matthew repeats this same principle when Christ asked Peter, James and John to pray with Him in the garden. He returned to find them sleeping; not once, not twice, but three times. Christ’s rebuke on His first return to Peter was; “’So,

you men couldn’t keep watch with me even one hour? Keep watching and praying so that you do not come into temptation; the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.’” (Matthew 26:40b-41)

There is a supernatural battle that continues throughout our entire life here on earth as a believer. If you never feel torn, stretched, and at times defeated in this conflict within I would question your sincerity in the faith. The clearest verse that describes this ongoing battle within is Galatians 5:16-17. The verse reads; “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”

Readies For Community Family Fun Day

The Ephrata Public Library, located at 550 South Reading Road, Ephrata, has announced their programs for June. Programs are open to the public and free of charge. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra J. Daub, age 85, who departed this life on May 28, 2026. Born on January 12, 1941, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Sandy spent her life in service to others, exemplifying a spirit that was both spunky and sparkly.

Sandy was a beloved mother to her four children: Marie Fryberger, wife of Bob of Ephrata Ronald Daub II, husband of Donna of Stevens, Gregory Daub, husband of Melody of Narvon, and Steven Daub of Denver. She cherished the moments when her family gathered together, finding joy in their laughter and companionship. A devoted mother, she was known for her kindness, sassy, and silly sense of humor, never afraid to express her thoughts openly.

Sandy’s life reflected her strong faith and heartfelt devotion to her heavenly father.

She dedicated her time to volunteering with Hospice, providing compassionate support to those in need. Sandy was also a passionate pen pal, fostering connections that brought her joy throughout her life.

Her passions included crocheting, embroidery, and reading, each a reflection of her love for creativity and learning. Sandra held a deep appreciation for nature, finding solace in butterflies, flowers, and animals.

Sandy was always singing, finding joy in old-time hymns and songs of praise, and was a devoted member of the Brethren Village Choir, where she shared her faith and love of music with others.

Hazel V. Foltz, 91, of Moravian Manor, Lititz, passed away on May 25, 2026. Born in West Lawn, Berks County in 1935, to the late Chester and Grace (Sensenig) Sweigart, she was the loving wife of the late Charles S. Foltz who died in January 2024.

She and her husband owned Foltz’s Upholstery in Reamstown where she made the drapes and curtains.

Hazel enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and needlework in her spare time, as well as reading, stamp collecting, and diamond painting.

She was a longtime member of Saint Paul’s EC church in Reamstown.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Linda Andes (Keith) of Ephrata; and son, Randall E. Foltz (Kristy) of

ria) of Rochester, NY. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ronald G. Daub, parents, Harold L. (Grace M. Cole) and Carrie “Marie” Schucker, a grandson, Nathan Daub, and siblings, Byron Schucker, Kenny Schucker, Ronald Schucker, Ronald Cole, Dorothy Kabel, Ruthie Condon, and Pat Fisher.

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on June 5, 2026, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 3110 Lititz

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Bruce K. Gross, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Stevens on May 18, 2026. Born on January 15, 1958, in Ephrata, Bruce was a son of the late Harry and Ella (Zuck) Gross, and the loving husband of Susan Gross, whom he married in 1999, and together they shared many cherished years.

A graduate of Ephrata High School in 1975, Bruce began his career early, joining Zinn’s at the age of 16. His commitment and leadership skills led him to become the manager, a position he held with distinction, and growing his work ethic there for about 15 years. His time at Zinn’s was marked by strong relationships and a genuine care for those he served and worked alongside. Bruce found simple pleasures in everyday activities that brought him joy and a sense of peace. He had a fondness for fishing, often spending quiet moments in nature reflecting by the water. He took great pride in his yard work, cultivating and tending to his outdoor spaces with diligence. Additionally, he enjoyed going grocery shopping, an activity that connected him with his community and brought him a sense of routine and comfort. Bruce’s life was marked by

fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Susan Gross; two children: Michelle Wilcox and Christopher Gross; a grandson; stepchildren Andrew Fink, Samantha Fink, and Stephanie Fink; a step-granddaughter; his brother, Brian Gross; and cousin, Kenny Stoner.

Services will be private to the family.
