Adamstown Community Days Offers Plenty Of Family Fun

The annual Adamstown Community Days is set to kick off on Thursday, May 28 and run until Sunday, May 31. This awesome community event has rides, games, live music, great food, free entertainment, free admission and a fireworks spectacular not to be missed. The event is held at the Adamstown Grove next to the pool.

Cold weather has finally given way to warmer temperatures, blooming flowers and local produce! Area farm markets have many homegrown items available, including a springtime favorite - asparagus.

43rd Annual Terre Hill Antique And Classic Car Show

The Terre Hill Car Show is celebrating its 43rd year on Sunday, June 7, and it runs rain or shine in the Terre Hill Community Park. This is one of the larger fundraisers each year for the Weaverland Valley Fire Department (Terre Hill and Goodville stations). Each of the 18 classes are sponsored by a local business with their details on a sign on the show field. Spectator admission and parking are always free.

Breakfast and lunch are available from the kitchen in the large pavilion. There is a cost for vehicle registration and runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Winners are chosen by popular vote. Each entrant to the show gets one ballot and cash awards will be given to first, second and third places in each of 18 classes. Class 17 is for cars, trucks and motorcycles that are not yet 25

years old, but still interesting and favorites are voted for and prizes awarded just like the antique classes. Class 18 is for vehicles that have been judged by the Antique Automobile Club of America (such as at the Hershey show) and have scored a First Juniors or Seniors award. Favorites are voted on and prizes awarded. Each entrant in the car show gets a prize ticket, numbers are drawn and prizes will be

given away from 11:30 a.m. to about 2:00 p.m. Winners are announced about 2:30 p.m. and are paraded to the stage area for their cash prizes.

A “Best of Show” is chosen every year by the fire company staff and the winner gets a prize package, a trophy and their vehicle will appear on next years’ dash plaque. The Best of Show

trophy is sponsored by a local business.

Cocalico Regional German Competition Winners

Cocalico High School secured first place at the recent German Student Day, hosting 84 scholars from Manheim Township, Manheim Central and Penn Manor. The event tested students’ mastery of German grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation through a series of collaborative challenges.

Beyond the competition, students immersed themselves in German culture with an authentic luncheon and a traditional folk dancing performance by the Lancaster Liederkranz Schuhplattler group. The day celebrated both academic excellence and the vibrant heritage of the German language.

Cold weather has finally given way to warmer temperatures, blooming flowers and local produce! Area farm markets have many homegrown items available, including a springtime favorite - asparagus. Asparagus Casserole

Gloria Dougherty, Akron “Delicious!”

¼ cup butter

¼ cup flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 cups milk

4 cups cooked asparagus, cut into ½” to 1” pieces

4 hard-cooked eggs, chopped

1 cup grated cheese salt and pepper to taste buttered breadcrumbs (optional)

In a saucepan, melt the butter. Add the flour and salt; stir well. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil and boil for 2 minutes.

In a 9”x9” casserole dish, combine the sauce mixture with the asparagus and eggs. Add the salt and pepper to taste. Top with buttered breadcrumbs if desired.

Bake at 375°F until warm and bubbly.

Asparagus

Chilled Marinated Asparagus

Pat Roth, Ephrata

2/3 cup brown sugar, packed

2/3 cup cider vinegar

2/3 cup soy sauce

2/3 cup vegetable oil

4 teaspoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon garlic powder

2 lbs. fresh asparagus

1 cup chopped pecans, toasted

In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, lemon juice and garlic powder. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 5 minutes. Refrigerate until cool.

In a large skillet, bring ½” of water to a boil. Add the asparagus; reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes or until the asparagus are crisp tender.

Drain the asparagus and rinse in cold water. Put the asparagus in a large resealable plastic bag.

Add the marinade, seal the bag and turn to coat the asparagus. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight.

Drain and discard the marinade. Put the asparagus on a platter and sprinkle with the pecans.

Cream of Asparagus

Soup

Rachel Hoover, Ephrata

3 cups asparagus, chopped

4 cups water

1 small onion, chopped

6 tablespoons butter

6 tablespoons flour

1½ teaspoons salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

3 cups milk

Cook the asparagus in water until tender. Saute the onions in the butter; stir in the flour, salt and pepper. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly until thickened.

Puree the aspargus in a blender with the cooking water. Add the blended asparagus to the sauce and heat, but do not boil.

French Fried Asparagus

Pat Roth, Ephrata

1 lb. fresh asparagus

spears

2 tablespoons butter or margarine

3 tablespoons flour

1 cup milk

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

3 eggs, beaten 1½ cups fine dry breadcrumbs vegetable oil

Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus. If desired, remove the scales with a knife or a vegetable peeler. Cook the asparagus, covered in boiling water for 6 to 8 minutes or until the asparagus are crisp tender. Drain and set aside.

Melt the butter or margarine in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Add the flour and stir until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually add the milk; cook over medium heat, stirring

constantly until thickened and bubbly. Stir in the salt.

Dip each asparagus spear in the white sauce, dredge in the Parmesan cheese, dip in the egg and coat with the breadcrumbs. Fry in hot oil, about 375°F, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Makes about 4 to 6 servings

Asparagus Dip

Stephanie Trowbridge, Stevens “Easy and delicious.”

1 lb. fresh asparagus, diced, cooked and drained

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1 cup mayonnaise

Combine the asparagus, Parmesan and mayonnaise in a large bowl; fold to combine. Transfer the mixture to a greased ovenproof bowl or dip crock.

Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes or until heated through. Serve warm with snack rye bread, pita chips, or crusty French bread.

Creamed Ham & Asparagus

1 lb. fresh or frozen asparagus, cut into 1” pieces

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

1½ to 2 cups of milk

1½ lb. fully cooked ham, cubed

8 oz. or 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

3 hard-cooked eggs, chopped ½ teaspoon dried parsley flakes

toast or English muffin In a small saucepan, cook the asparagus with a small amount of water until crisp tender, about 3 to 4 minutes. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in the cornstarch, salt and pepper. Gradually add the milk. Bring the milk to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat; add the ham, cheese, eggs, parsley and asparagus. Cook and stir until the ham is warmed and the cheese is melted. Serve over toast, English muffin, etc.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Leek, Asparagus & Herb Soup

Kay Weaver, Lititz

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon butter

2 medium leeks (about 1½ cups), washed well and chopped

3 cloves garlic, chopped

½ lb. new Yukon gold, red or white potatoes, diced

2¼ cups reduced sodium chicken or vegetable broth

¾ teaspoon kosher salt

1 lb. fresh asparagus spears (about 3½ to 4 cups), trimmed and cut into 1” pieces

½ cup fresh or frozen peas

2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley

1 tablespoon fresh chopped dill

¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

3 tablespoons fresh chopped chives, divided ½ to ¾ cup half and half

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/3 cup sour cream or crème fraîche, for garnish

Heat the oil and butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the leeks and sauté, stirring often, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the potatoes and sauté for about 2 minutes. Add the broth and salt; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.

Turn heat to medium and add asparagus and peas; cover and simmer until tender, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley, dill, pepper and 1 tablespoon of the chives.

Transfer the soup to a blender and blend until smooth, being careful with the hot liquid and not filling the blender too high. An immersion blender can also be used.

Return the soup to the pan and add the half and half; bring to a low simmer,

stirring often. Add the lemon juice and taste to see if more salt and pepper is needed.

Ladle soup into bowls. Garnish with the sour cream and sprinkle with the remaining chives. Leftover soup will last in the fridge for 3 to 4 days, but may lose some of the vibrant green color. Makes 6 servings.

Baked Asparagus Bits

Mary Ann Dell, East Earl

20 slices thin white bread, crusts trimmed 3 oz. blue cheese, softened 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 egg, beaten

20 fresh or frozen asparagus spears ½ lb. butter, melted

Flatten the bread sliced with a rolling pin. Blend the blue cheese, cream cheese and egg well. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture on each slice of bread.

Steam asparagus until crisp. Roll an asparagus spear

inside each bread slice, securing with a toothpick. Dip each rolled spear into the melted butter to coat; place on a cookie sheet and freeze.

When the spears are firm, slice into bite sized pieces. Bake at 400°F for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serves 20. Yields approximately 75 bite sized pieces.

Morning is the time another day awakens. Everything awakens that was darkly covered. The Sun becomes acquainted with a new day. All comes to life, hark what I say!

Everything is lit up, the night has passed; Sometimes in the sky one sees the morning red. Some folks believe it’s an omen for rain; We must leave our bed and go downstairs.

The air is damp, the dew is on the grass: What a refreshing aroma wafts to our nose. We are eager for breakfast; From the barn we hear lowing of hungry animals.

Birds greet the day with beautiful song, Prepared for daylight, no longer tired. If you’re lucky, you’ll spy the morning star. Soon it’s time for labors to begin for man and wife.

Morning is my favorite time of day: I always rise early, come what may. Only for sleep is my bed desired: I can hardly wait for the day to begin!

We are indebted to Anna’s sister, Edith Reifsnyder, for sharing with us the obituary which appeared in the Reading Eagle on February 3, 1989. It follows.

ANNA F. FAUST, BERNVILLE POET, DIES AT AGE 70

“Anna F. Faust, 70, formerly of 516 North Main Street, Bernville died Thursday morning at 6:03 in the Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where she has resided since January 13.

Under the pen name of “Die Anna vun Bannwill,” she wrote Pennsylvania German poetry, which was published in four volumes in the Heritage Collection of the Library of Congress.

She was the widow of Frank W. Faust, who died in 1976. Born in Jefferson Township, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Sallie A. (Degler) Schaeffer.

She was employed as a receptionist by the Bernville Medical Center from 1966 through 1978, when she retired. She was a member of St. Thomas United Church of Christ, Bernville, and taught Sunday School there for more than 25 years.

She is survived by two daughters: Sally A., wife of Michael D. Baron, Spring Grove, York County; and Winnie S. Faust, at home; and two grandchildren. Also two brothers: John Schaeffer, Bernville, and C. Sylvester Schaeffer, R. 1, Womelsdorf; and a sister, E. Edith, wife of Vernon M. Reifsnyder, R. 3, Bernville.

The Kirkhoff Funeral Home, Bernville is in charge of arrangements.”

Die Bischlin-Gnipplin un Bischli-Gnippli attended the last rites for “die Anna vun Bannwill,” which were held on February 4 in Bernville in the St. Thomas United Church of Christ. Interment took place in the adjoining St. Thomas ***

Last week, we discussed one of the wiles of the devil was to distract us from our goal, purpose, and the high priority disciplines of life. In so doing, he will diminish our fruit, usefulness, and growth. We looked at Mary and Martha. Mary chose the best sitting at Christ’s feet, and meanwhile, Martha was too concerned about other things (Preparations). Demos is another example. Paul said of him, “Demos has forsaken me, having loved this present world.” Once we allow low priority items (other things) to distract, our affection soon follows and then finally, your once godly priorities will fade into the background. Don’t be overcome with evil in any form, especially the little stuff. It’s the little daily decisions that

if well made, will build our character, or if poorly made, will eat away at our character and ministry like the little foxes in the book of Ecclesiastes.

Not only does the destroyer seek to distract us, but he uses peer pressure to lead us into mediocrity. Romans 12:2 will sharpen our focus on just how much pressure is applied to the believer’s life to conform to the world’s societal norms, trends, thought patterns, values, lifestyle, and finally, our worldview. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” The word for conformed means “to press into a mold,” to make something look like another image. The world (cosmos) will not be satisfied until you look like their image. This pressure to conform will never stop, let-up, or cease and desist. The English definition of conform is, “To align, match, or be in harmony with something.” The last thing you should want, as a believer, is to

align with, match, or be in harmony with this world. The scripture is clear, “if anyone loves the world the love of the Father is NOT in him.” If you are comfortable with this world’s system, you are not a Christian. Period. You had better follow Paul’s advice: “examine yourself to see it you are in the faith.”

And so, what are some of the pressures of this present age? Well, there is Fake Book. Oh, excuse me. Did I spell that incorrectly? Well maybe or maybe not? Today, we have a plethora of social media: Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Reddit and Quora. This is just the top ten. The average American spends more than five hours on their phone each day. That’s approximately 1,825 hours per year - the equivalent of two and a half months. What would happen if the average Christian would spend five hours a day in the Bible? I guarantee we would see more of the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and selfcontrol.

What fruit comes from the social media? Let’s take a look at some problems we know result from over use of social media, especially in the youth. Here is just a sampling: depression, anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, irritability, sleep deprivation, isolation, inability to engage in conversation, aggression or withdraw, loneliness, unrealistic standards and cyber bullying. Well now, that doesn’t sound like the fruit I want in my life. I realize that there is a lot of good purpose in the internet and social media. It can be used for good as well, but overall, it does work to mold you into an image. It is having an impact on your life. It does represent a serious challenge. It does influence. Why do you think they call them influencers? Believe it or not, you are yielding up self-control even if it’s only too much usage. Think of how much time and productivity is wasted away.

We have considered the evil influence without. Next week, we can study the evil within.

Layer the potatoes, onions and asparagus in a baking dish. Dot with butter; season with salt and pepper. Bake, covered, at 325°F for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with cheese. Let stand until cheese melts. Serves 6 to 8.

12 oz. fresh asparagus spears

8 tiny new potatoes, cut into quarters

2 teaspoons olive oil or cooking oil

½ teaspoon lemon peel, finely shredded ¼ teaspoon salt

Catalyst Christian School Annual Benefit Auction Is Almost Here!

GARAGE SALE

St. Luke’s Vacation Bible School

St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 222 North Broad Street (Route 501 North), Lititz, will be hosting their Vacation Bible School (VBS). The dates are Sunday, June 14 through Thursday, June 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a picnic on Thursday, June 18.

The theme for their VBS this year is “Snowball Mountain Challenge.” Come out and meet the puppet, OLLIE - the arctic seal.

If you wish to register your child, you can go online to http://stlukesucclititz.mycokesburyvbs.com, or you can stop by the church office, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and register and/or pick up a registration form. You can also come to St. Luke’s on opening night of VBS at 6:00 p.m. to register.

VBS is for young people ages four through those entering the sixth grade in the fall. The picnic on Thursday starts at 5:15 p.m.

The community is invited to attend the Annual Auction weekend at Catalyst Christian School, 1050 East Newport Road, Lititz on Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30. The event offers two days filled with food, family activities, auctions, shopping, and community fun for all ages.

Friday evening begins with a Down Home Dinner from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.,

available for both eat-in and drive-thru guests. The evening auction events begin with the Student/Children’s Auction at 6:00 p.m., followed by the General Auction at 6:30 p.m., along with themed baskets and special feature items throughout the night.

Saturday’s activities begin with an “All You Can Eat” Breakfast Buffet from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The popu-

lar Landscape Auction starts at 8:00 a.m., followed by a full day of children’s games and activities beginning at 9:00 a.m. Additional highlights include the Main Auction, Theme Baskets, the Men’s Auction, Treasures and Treats, and a variety of special feature packages and experiences. Food trucks will be back again this year, so be sure to come check them out.

The annual auction is one of the school’s largest community events and serves as a fundraiser supporting the mission of Catalyst Christian School, igniting faith, forming leaders, and launching lives.

Community members, families, alumni, neighbors, and first-time guests are all welcome to attend. Whether

coming for a meal, the auctions, children’s activities, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere, there is something for everyone throughout the weekend.

The Denver Lions Club recognized Riley Grace, of Denver, as Student of the Month for March 2026. Riley is the daughter of Andrew and Kelli Grace. An accomplished student, Riley was recognized as student of the month in Science, English and World Language. She was also recognized with a Pennsylvania State Language award and a Medallion Award.

Beyond her studies at Cocalico High School, Riley is involved with the National Society and the Global Scholars program. She is also editor-in-chief of the yearbook.

Riley is affiliated with Our Mother of Perpetual Church where she helps with the food bank. She volunteers for the Summer Spanish Elementary Enrichment Program and works as an intern for Mejia Law Group. She also does home services and babysitting.

Toastmaster Earns Second Place

Ben Donahower of Ephrata, earned second place in the Evaluation Speech Contest at the Toastmasters District 38 Conference, held on Saturday, April 25, at Live! Casino in Philadelphia.

This year’s conference marked a historic milestone, as it is the final conference for District 38 before Toastmasters International reorganizes district boundaries. District 38 has long represented the eastern half of Pennsylvania and large parts of New Jersey, making this year’s competition particularly significant for participants and clubs across the region.

Donahower’s achievement also represents a notable milestone for his home club, Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters. This is the second time and tie for the highest place finish at the district level in the club’s history.

The Evaluation Speech Contest challenges participants to listen to a speech and deliver a concise, constructive evaluation, demonstrating analytical thinking, organization, and effective communication, core skills emphasized by Toastmasters International.
