A highpoint of the day was a special presentation that was given to EMS Chief Darrell Fisher. The Dr. George Moerkirk Memorial Contribution to EMS Award is awarded to individuals who show dedication to delivering high-quality prehospital medical care, in memory of Dr. George E. Moerkirk, a past president of the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council (PEHSC). Dr. Moerkirk had an instrumental role in developing the system and providing education to EMTs and paramedics. The award is presented annually by the PEHSC in partnership with the Pennsylvania Bureau of
Emergency Medical Services. For more than 25 years, Darrell has dedicated a large portion of his life to advancing Emergency Medical Services and strengthening the communities they serve. Beginning his career as a firefighter, he went on to earn his EMT and Paramedic certifications, and for nearly 20 years has served as EMS Chief at New Holland. Under his leadership, New Holland Ambulance has experienced transformational growth. Darrell has been an unwavering advocate for EMS education, provider development, provider mental health progressive scope of practice, and the integration of emerging technologies. He led the agency’s transition to IALS in 2017

He oversaw the placement of a substantial number of AEDs throughout the New Holland service area and spearheaded the creation of the New Holland EMS Training Institute, investing in the next generation of providers. Additionally, he dedicated countless hours to launching the region’s first paramedic-level pre-hospital blood program.
Darrell’s vision, leadership, and relentless commitment have saved countless lives and elevated EMS across the region.

Build A Bird House Event In Reinholds
The Swamp Lutheran Church will be hosting a free “Habitat For Feathered Friends” community event on Sunday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. Each person will receive their own kit and will create their own bluebird house and pine cone peanutbutter feeder.
All ages are welcome to this community oriented educational event. While the bird houses are being constructed, a retired PA Game Commission representative will speak about protecting Pennsylvania’s wildlife.
The program is expected to be over by noon and refreshments are available. Call the church office at 717336-2849 to reserve your kit(s) or walk-ins that day are welcome until the kits run out. The church is located at 275 Swamp Church Road in Reinholds. Interested people are welcome to attend the weekly service beginning at 8:30 a.m.

“There’s something so special about an April gathering—when the world outside begins to bloom and, as we always say, our club seems to blossom right along with it. On a lovely spring afternoon at the Eicher Arts Center, members came together once again, bringing with them laughter, friendship, and that unmistakable sense of belonging that defines our club.
A SEASON OF NEW BEGINNINGS
April is always a time of renewal, and this year was no exception. One of the highlights of our meeting was the welcoming of a new slate of leadership for the coming year. With heartfelt support from those in attendance, the club looks ahead to another season filled with purpose, camaraderie, and meaningful service. In a touching and memorable moment, we paused to reflect on the rich history of our club—now spanning nearly eight decades. Stories were shared of how times have changed, from the way members were once listed to how gatherings have evolved over the years. Yet through it all, one thing has remained constant: a deep commitment to friendship, community, and service.

“Put evil in its place”

Scripture: Romans 12:21“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Our verse starts with a command, “Do not.” There is a very real possibility that a believer can be overcome with evil, so Paul makes this clear, “Do not.” Don’t let it happen, be on your guard, be diligent, and make it a priority.
The second law of thermodynamics may illustrate a point I want to make. The law is basically this: All things in the universe tend towards eventual disorder and the usefulness of energy becomes less with time. The term entropy means that without constant energy in-
put, systems tend to become disorganized over time. So let’s look at energy as an example. Take a hot burning coal, lay it on the ground, and watch what happens. The coal will only burn so long, delivering less and less heat as time goes by. The coal will soon become useless for heat and be completely used up. Gasoline in your car is another illustration. Twenty gallons of gas will only run your car for so long. What happens next?
You have to fill it again. The gasoline is used up because it can only produce so much energy until it’s expired. If entropy didn’t exist, you could fill your car once and it would run for ever. We can also look at a neat room. What happens if you don’t keep putting energy into keeping it neat? It becomes messy and disorganized.
So, having said all of that, what’s the point? If we don’t aggressively and actively guard against evil and put energy into our life in Christ (in the form of good), we will naturally degenerate, and evil will eventually overcome us. So, it is incum-
bent that the believer do all they can to focus on, participate in, and expend energy inculcating good to our Christ life. Philippians 4:8 puts it this way; “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are
lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.”
First and foremost, it is imperative that we know our enemy…evil. If we are unaware of evil’s presence, purpose and pressure on
our life, you will most certainly be overcome little by little. Let’s just look at the evil around us. I have to laugh, but it is a good illustration; when our grandson was little he got into the bathtub and sinking down up to his chin, he looked at the surface of the water and said the dirt is floating all around me. We don’t have to look far and wide to see the dirt that is floating all around us.
The evil around us. The inception of evil starts with Lucifer, who was at one time an archangel, a four-winged cherub at the throne of God.
His Hebrew name is “HEYLEL,” which means “shining one, brightness.” We can see what happened in Isaiah 14: 12-15. “How you have fallen from heaven, you star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who defeated the nations! But you said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven, I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will
make myself like the Most High. Nevertheless you will be brought down to Sheol, the recesses of the pit.” The Shining One (I willed) himself right out of Heaven. Notice five times he wants to take God’s place. In other words, Satan’s problem was pride. Move over God, now there are two of us!
Revelation 12:4a says; “and his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and hurled them to the earth.” So, not only did Satan fall, but he managed to take one third of the angelic beings with him. In the New Testament, he is called “the father of lies,” “a murderer.” “The tempter,” “the accuser/ slanderer,” “the evil one,” “the ruler/prince of this world,” the god of this age,” “a roaring lion.” “An angel of light,” and “the great dragon.” With these titles, I don’t think you want to have him over for dinner anytime soon.

The Ephrata Cloister is continuing to move forward on the final phase of the Amphitheater Revitalization Project, which includes finishing the set buildings and building the Donor Wall. The buildings, miniature versions of the historic Saron and Saal, were built fifty years ago in April 1976 to replace two-dimensional flats that served as a backdrop for the amphitheater stage. The buildings provided staging and storage for
weddings and concerts in the amphitheater.
For several years, the amphitheater was unused. In 2021, the Ephrata Cloister Associates removed the rotted benches and rebuilt the space with paved pathways, stone walls, a flagstone stage, and grass terraces. Now, in the last phase of work, Abner Glick and his crew from Echoes of the Past are replacing the roof with cedar shakes, rebuild-
ing the windows and dormers, and repairing damaged boards on the front of the building and around the doors. Once the boards are stained, a Donor Wall will be placed on the end wall of the “Saron” section of the buildings to thank the many donors who made this restoration possible.
The new amphitheater will be used this summer for concerts and will soon be avail-
able for weddings and other rentals. Shown are local carpenters tearing off the old roof.

Clarence M. Fittery
Clarence M. Fittery, 87, of Denver, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at home. He was born in Berks County, son of the late Bernard S. and Emma R. (Frantz) Fittery and was the husband of Mildred (Weidman) Fittery, with whom he shared 68 years.
He was a member of Newmanstown United Christian Church, now known as New Life Fellowship. He was awarded a Middle Creek Game Preserve plaque, for farming on the game preserve for 50 years. He was the first one to farm the property.
He was a farmer for 50 years prior to his retirement. In addition to his wife, Clarence is survived by daughter, Brenda A. Becker, wife of the late Rodney of Mount Penn; son, Clarence E. Fittery, husband of Linda (Sellers) of Denver; 3 granddaughters, Crystal Brendle, Jamie Rolon, and Elizabeth MacFarlane; 4 grandsons, Matthew, Jared, Steven, and Tyler Fittery; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Paul, Bernard R., and Herman Fittery, 2 sisters, Esther Swope, and Emma Eberly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
daughter, Rebecca S. Fittery, whom he had loved taking care of, and son, David Lee Fittery; 3 sisters, Anna Mae Eberly, Betty Fittery, and Ruth Fittery.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 9 to 11:30 AM at the New Life Fellowship, 2 Memorial Blvd., Newmanstown. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 AM.

Lynne Boyer
Lynne Boyer, 70, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
He was born in Ephrata to the late Johnathan and Josephine (Barringer) Boyer and was the husband of Joyce (Deemer) Boyer.
Lynne was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, hiking, and wildlife. He enjoyed spending time with his beloved dog, Muncher.
In addition to his wife, Lynne is survived by a stepdaughter, Cindy Harden of Denver; a stepson, Tony Kurtz of Denver; four step grandchildren, Tim, Kyle, Dalton and Mason; three nephews, Brandon, Bruce (B.J.) and Phillip; a sister, Joni
Spires of SC and brother, Brian Boyer of DE. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Boyer. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Schoeneck Veterans Memorial Celebration
The Denver Women’s Club is pleased to recognize six talented eighth grade Cocalico Middle School (CMS) students for their personal commitment, dedication and performance in the Arts with the Fine Arts Achievement Award.
Angel Lor and Ella McGuire showed them their
fabulous artwork. Chrislyn Abbay and Elijah McKairnes shared their lovely voices in song. Logan Bowen and Olivia Hoffman played some peppy tones on their instruments.
The Club would like to thank the CMS music and art teachers for bringing them such talented young
students and the Adamstown Library for their support with supplying the arts students with a free book and USB card.

The Schoeneck Veterans Memorial Association (SVMA) will hold a Memorial Day celebration, which will begin with a parade stepping off at 9:00 a.m. They invite all types of vehicles and marchers to participate in their parade. Categories include the following: motorized vehicles and cycles, cars and trucks, trikes and bikes and wagons, organizations, individuals and families. There will be cash prizes for all participants. This year’s program will feature a brief history of the memorial celebrating 15 years at its present location. In addition, there will be a brief presentation on the history of the country, celebrating 250 years of American history, heritage and freedom. Finally, the Warbirds helicopter will fly over the Memorial at the conclusion of the program. It will land on the fire company grounds and will be available for tours until 2:00 p.m.
After the program concludes, the Schoeneck Veterans Memorial Association will serve a free lunch (hot dogs, drinks, cake and ice cream for all). All are welcome.
The SVMA greatly appreciates the generosity of the Schoeneck Area Civic Association and the Anne Brossman Sweigart Foundation for their generous support.

First and only daughter of Peter and Shannon Rathman and upcoming graduate Ash ton Rathman is an excellent student at Cocalico. In the fall, she took AP Calculus AB, En ergy Power and Transporta tion, Physics, and British Lit erature. This semester, she is taking AP Calculus BC, Sew ing and Fashion Design, and Engineering. Along with these classes, she participates in both girls tennis and track and field as a two-year varsity letter winner. She is also a captain on the track team.
Once Ashton completes high school, she plans to go straight to college and attend Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology to major in mechanical engineering. If Ashton had the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world, she would like to visit Switzerland because it is outdoorsy and has a calming atmosphere.
In her free time, Ashton enjoys various creative and relaxing activities, such as crocheting, arts and craft, guitars, and watching movies. A fun fact about Ashton is that guitar is not the only instrument she plays as she is also a harmonica player. A quote by an unknown author Ashton would like to share is, “Being ready is a myth. You start. You suck. You figure it out. You get better.” She likes it because no one is ever truly ready for anything, and it is all simply about knowing yourself and trying to reach the best version of yourself that you can. Cocalico would like to wish Ashton good luck as she finishes her senior year!

Madison Elizabeth Perry, daughter of Kelsey and Jonny Orlando, is a lively, energetic, and compassionate student at Lititz Christian School. She is invested in her community through various school and church activities.
At Lititz Christian, Maddie is a member of the Spanish Language Honor Society and is also a member of the volleyball team. Her favorite thing about Lititz Christian is the community of teachers who support and walk alongside their students in their walk with the Lord. She has grown to love the tight-knit community at LC, which has been like family to her.
Senora Rittler, the Spanish Teacher at Lititz Christian, has made a special impact on Maddie’s life. Maddie admires Senora Rittler for her faithfulness to those whom the Lord has placed in her life, as well as her continual kindness, joy, modesty, and gracefulness.
As a visual learner, Maddie’s favorite class is mathematics, as it includes both visual and structural elements. Maddie currently attends Victory Church, where she is involved with Student Leadership and Kids’ ministry. Her hobbies include baking, shopping, and traveling. In her free time, Maddie enjoys spending time with her friends, being with kids, getting frozen yogurt, serving at her church, and enjoying her hobbies.
