Ephrata Fair Fundraising Events Need Your Support

As many locals know, September is “Fair Season,” and for many families in our area, that means the muchloved Ephrata Fair. Run by the Ephrata Farmers Day Association (EFDA), a

501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Ephrata Fair has a long-running history that has enabled many local civic organizations to raise support for their individual causes and give back to the commu-

nity. Many local organizations have created a mutually beneficial relationship with the Fair—when the Fair does well, the community does well.

* On April 21, 1794, Josephine de Beauharnais, the future Empress of France and first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, was imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. Released five days after the beheading of her then husband Alexandre de Beauharnais, her marriage to Napoleon ended in divorce after she failed to provide him an heir, but he continued to provide for her, declared her “Empress for life” and allowed her to retain the title of Empress Josephine.

* On April 23, 1961, Judy Garland delivered a Carnegie Hall performance that was greeted by a standing ovation before she even began to sing and was interrupted throughout by additional ovations. That performance has often been lauded as “the greatest night in showbiz history.”

* On April 24, 1953, Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He retired as prime minister two years later but remained in Parliament until 1964, the year before his death.

Homeschool Students Busy Practicing For Upcoming Play Performance

Students in the Learning Station homeschool co-op are working hard rehearsing for their upcoming presentation of “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” The presentations will be on

The EFDA is committed to

continuing this long-standing tradition, but is now asking for community support to help sustain the Fair for years to come. As time has moved on, the requirements to run such a large event have changed dramatically. Increased costs, changes in regulations, and several

years of inclement weather have started to take their toll on the bottom line of the EFDA. In addition, the Fair incurs approximately $40,000 to $50,000 annually in municipal service costs— including police, public works, and utilities—which are necessary to ensure a safe and successful event but represent one of the Fair’s largest ongoing expenses.

To assist in boosting funds, the EFDA will be hosting several fundraising events over the next few months.

Verna Youndt, of Lancaster, born on August 11,1928, passed away on April 7, 2026, at Garden Spot Village. Her family would like to acknowledge this exemplary facility for the compassionate and exceptional care that she received there. They especially extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff in the Fallcrest unit who cared for Mom/ Grandma.

Born in Denver, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late George and Earla (Pierce) Hainley. Her husband, the late Pherl Youndt, died in 2005. A son, Terry Youndt, and a brother, Charles Hainley, also predeceased her.

As Mom and Grandma, Verna loved her family. With loving memories and gratitude, they carry on the values she helped instill in them. Surviving is a daughter, Bonnie Jean Weinhold (Tom, deceased). Grandsons and

June Louise (Bailey) Ibach, 95, Lititz, passed away on Monday, April 6.

She was the wife of the late J. Kenneth Ibach.

She is survived by a son, Steven Jay Ibach, husband of Dorcas; a daughter, Lynn

As we indicated last week, this ECK is not for beginners but rather for those who have an intense interest in our PG vocabulary and its roots in the Palatinate (die Pfalz) in southwestern Germany. It is our hope that those of our readers who love to preserve and use the words of their grandparents will find words here with which they are already familiar or words which remind them of other possibly related words. It is also our hope that some of you word detectives will take

the time to respond to these words and send us sentences and explanations which come to mind as you carefully examine the words and explanations given above. Please forgive us if we did not translate the High German definitions into English. We thought you just might like to see how some of these words are explained in Standard German by the editors of the Pfaelzisches Woerterbuch, Rudolf Post and Josef Schwing, with whom we visited for several weeks in Kaiserslautern in the Palatinate in the spring of 1984. You will note that occasionally we give more than one Palatine form and more than one definition for a given word - that was to make matters more interesting for you. Again, we’d like to remind you that if you were in the Palatinate, which is located in that area of Southwestern West Germany which lies between the Rhine River and France, you would find that the section of the Eastern Palatinate (die Vorgerpfalz), which lies closest to the Rhine River, is the area where the forms and pronunciations of the dialect words most nearly agree with unser Mudderschprooch. Local Cadets Earn Promotions And Awards

Members of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, received their promotions and awards at their Monday, March 30, meeting.

Cadet Airmen Harrison Dean of Strasburg, Micaiah DeLeon of Columbia, Tanner Jones of East Earl, Noah Hermosillo of Wrightsville, and Hayden Greiner of York were promoted to Cadet Airman First Class and received the Arnold Ribbon marking their successful completion of Achievement 2. Cadet Senior Airman Gabe Catherman of Windsor, was promoted to Cadet Staff Sergeant and received the Wright Brothers Award and Certificate. This milestone signifies the completion of the first phase of the cadet program and advancement into the noncommissioned officer ranks. First Church Ephrata’s series on the The Book Of Acts is continuing. The Book of Acts is the fifth book of the New Testament and is a historical account of the early Christian church, beginning with Jesus’ ascension and the subsequent spread of the gospel by his apostles. It is essentially a sequel to the Gospel of Luke, continuing the story of Jesus’ ministry through his followers. They would love to have you continue with them on the series in May.

Global Scholars To Host Multicultural Night

At a previous event, a 99-year-old resident captivated the audience by sharing the inspiring story of learning to ride motorcycles at age 38 – proving it’s never too late to try something new. Stories like these remind attendees that life’s most memorable moments can happen at any age.

To open the program, a talented resident will play the piano to accompany a vocal performance from a resident quartet singing “Moments to Remember” by The Four Lads of the 1950s. In keeping with the spirit of the event, the entire audience will join together to reprise the song, which at the last event, brought together more than 150 attendees in a shared moment of connection.

From stories that elicit laughter to moments that spark reflection, Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, invites the greater community to experience the

Global Scholars Club will host Multicultural Night at Cocalico High School on Sunday, April 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Families and community members are invited to celebrate cultures from around the world through student-created displays, food, music, and activities. There will also be dance performances, crafts, and raffles! The event aims to highlight the diversity of global traditions while bringing the community together for an evening of learning and connection. All are welcome to attend this free event.

Adamstown Area Library is free to use for Pennsylvania residents. Visitors can bring an ID or proof of address to receive a library card. Denver Elementary Positive Impact Club

Denver Elementary School has several after school clubs and one of them is the positive impact club. This after-school program is for boys in grades third through fifth. The focus of the program is to help boys in creating and nurturing a positive impact on themselves and those around them. “Your Testimony”

Scripture: John 4:39“Now from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all the things I have ever done.’”

A mission field doesn’t have to be in a foreign land. I would say that no one should go to a foreign mission field if they don’t bear witness and testimony wherever they currently are. Disobedience doesn’t have to be doing bad things. There are sins of commission (doing what God forbids) and sins of omission (not doing what God asks). We need to take opportunities and make opportunities to share our tes-

timony and the gospel. We need to be like Isaiah, “Here I am. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 - “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am. Send me!’”

There is nothing like sharing God’s truth with others that brings joy and rejuvenation to the believer.

The sharing of our testimony and the gospel must always be motivated by love for people. One person who came off as cold and calculated had this response when he tried to share the gospel with someone; they said, “you don’t give a (***) about me, you just want another scalp to hang on your belt.” Wow! Maybe he was right. We must always leave the door open for the next person. Remember what Paul said, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). It is a rare situation that someone trusts Christ on one person’s labor. Notice what Paul goes on to say, “But God gives the increase.” If God isn’t invited

to the work, it is all in vain. The rest of the verse says this, “So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Our job is to pray and share, God’s work is to convict of sin, righteousness and judgment. This should help us to relax. You can’t save anyone, it’s not in your job description. Here is what God says, “When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region” (Acts 13:48, 49). We don’t know who is appointed and who is not so we share like Paul in the marketplace to anyone who will listen. There will be those who want nothing to do with Biblical truth, and that’s ok. Many atheists will eventually come to Christ in the here and now. Eventually, they will by force when “every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess Christ is

Lord.” Those who refuse and don’t want to hear, shake off the dust from your Reeboks and move on. “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet” (Matthew 10:14). These people actually oppose themselves; they just don’t know it. 2 Timothy 2:24, 25a - “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves.”

Finally, Paul says, “I have become all things to all people to win as many as possible.” It’s never a one size fits all approach, but rather, be flexible, Spirit-led effort to meet people where they are. Everyone is different and unique, we need to allow for that; God does. He made everyone. One last plea; don’t be a stumbling block for anyone or a reason to reject Christ. We all have some hypocrisy in our life, but an old friend said, “You can find plenty of fault in me, but what fault do you see in Christ?” Happy trails in “Your Testimony.”

Book Hunt For Adults Fundraiser

The Johnnie K Foundation is pleased to announce their very first Book Hunt for Adults fundraiser. The book hunt will be held on Sunday, May 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Adamstown Community Park, 339-341 West Main Street, Adamstown (Reinholds). If you are thinking to yourself, “what is a book hunt?” Envision hunting for Easter eggs but instead participants will search for wrapped, gently used, contemporary hardback and paperback books. Every participant is guaranteed at least one book and a canvas bag to use for “hunting” with the potential of finding additional books. There is an entrance fee for the event. Registration will close on Friday, April 24. No day of the event registration.

West Earl Lions Student Of The Month

It’s time for another Student of the Month, a project of the West Earl Lions Club and the Brownstown Elementary School. This award was given to Ezekiel Bohn, son of Miss Yancity and student of Ms. Alexis Mosso, teacher in the Primary Autistic Support classroom.

Ms. Mosso finds that “Zeke” is a kind, hardworking and determined student. He has been working hard to communicate his wants and needs, becoming more independent each day. One of his greatest strengths is his willingness to help others in the classroom and he takes pride in helping others, especially

Exploring, Growing Together Discussion Forum will be meeting Thursdays, May 14 and 28 to discuss “How To Know A Person” by David Brooks led by Ann

Van Hine. You do not need to read the book to attend the discussion. A practical, heartfelt guide to the art of truly knowing another person and fostering deeper connections at home, at work, and throughout your life.

As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, commu-

nity organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet all around are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood.

In “How to Know a Person,” Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing essential

questions: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them? What kind of conversations should you have? What parts of a person’s story should you pay attention to? Driven by his trademark sense of curiosity and determination to grow as a person, Brooks draws from the fields of psychology and neuroscience and the worlds

of theater, philosophy, history, and education to present a welcoming, hopeful, integrated approach to human connection. “How to Know a Person” helps readers become more understanding and considerate toward others, and to find the joy that comes from being seen.

Along the way it offers a possible remedy for a society that is riven by fragmen-

tation, hostility, and misperception. The act of seeing another person, Brooks argues, is profoundly creative: How can we look somebody in the eye and see something large in them and, in turn, see something larger in ourselves? “How to Know a Person” is for anyone searching for connection, and yearning to be understood.

They will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (new time from previous meetings) in the Boardroom at the Lititz Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road in Lititz.

Bring your lunch to eat during discussion, if desired. Masks are optional if you choose to attend. Betty Mae Kauffman

Betty Mae Kauffman, 94, of Denver, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at home.

She was born in Newmanstown, daughter of the late Benjamin and Lizzie (Rhine) Frantz and was the wife of the late Richard Kauffman who passed away in 2019. They shared 66 years of marriage.

Betty Mae enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her Christian faith and values were very important in her life.

Betty Mae is survived by 4 daughters: Barbara Ann Kauffman, at home; Shirley Fay Kauffman, at home; Peggy Jane, wife of H. Galen Hess of Lititz; and Mildred Mae, wife of Clair W.
